Résumé :
Driven by the gradual development of oil and natural gas resources, the global use of rigs and the number of wells rise steadily. Modular rigs play an important role in oil exploration because of their efficient transport, economy, technological advancement, and rig reliability. The derrick is a key part of the modular rig, and since many essential components in the derrick are welded, the fatigue life of the derrick weld is particularly relevant. In this paper, the modular rig is the object of the research, proposing the calculation formula of fatigue life of the key weld of the derrick. Using modular rig ZJ90D as an example, and combining the rig working conditions with the structural characteristics of the derrick, the key calculation parameters are obtained by numerical analysis. Thus, the life expectancy of the key weld is calculated according to the calculation formula of fatigue life presented herein. The research results have important reference significance and guiding value for the design and optimization of modular rig derricks.

Résumé :
The way of the intermediate casing string descending is considered. It allows overcoming the limits of derrick load capacity through the weight transferring descending intermediate casing string on the cemented string that is based on the foundation. In particular, technology is developed where the weight of each additional string, as it builds-up, is equivalent to additional friction forces which arise in the enlarged area. Such a descent technology does not depend on the load capacity of the derrick load capacity, does not create loads on the basis of derricks as well as additional tensile loads in the string with an increase in its length. It is proved that if such a condition is met, all known restrictions for the descent of intermediate columns of any length in a single intake are removed. Authors determined descending casing string weight that is distributed over the previously installed and cemented string. It is suggested to distribute casing string weight on existing and cemented string.

Résumé :
In an offshore operational environment, complex loads such as the hook load, stand load and wind load play a crucial role in the structural strength and reliability of the offshore derrick. Previous studies have mainly focused on the effect of a specific load on the strength of the derrick by using commercial software. Therefore, the influencing mechanism of each complex load on the strength and reliability of the offshore derrick is urgently necessary to explore. Not only is the strength numerical model of the JJ315/45-K typical derrick established and conducted via APDL (ANSYS Parametric Design Language), but also the stress–strength reliability simulation is explored and plotted using Python code and APDL. Furthermore, the influence and contribution of each load to the strength and reliability is determined. With the increase in hook load, the positions of maximum reliability risk appear in section II-1. With the increase in stand load or back wind load, the positions of maximum reliability risk appear in the bottom section. In addition, with the decrease in the columns’ height, the stress proportion of the hook load decreases by 73.5%, the stress proportion of the stand load increases by 22.6%, and the stress proportion of the back wind load changes slightly. When the wind speed is less than 20 m/s, the hook load mainly affects the minimum reliability index of the derrick. Moreover, when the wind speed is more than 20 m/s, the back wind load mainly affects the minimum reliability index of the derrick. This study provides a thorough explanation of the strength distribution law and the reliability of derricks under complex loads.

Résumé :
The marine derrick sometimes operates under extreme weather conditions, especially wind; therefore, the buckling analysis of the components in the derrick is one of the critical contents of engineering safety research. This paper aimed to study the local stability of marine derrick and propose an analytical method for geometrically nonlinear problems. The rod in the derrick is simplified as a compression rod with simply supported ends, which is subjected to transverse uniform load. Considering the second-order effect, the differential equations were used to establish the deflection, rotation angle, and bending moment equations of the derrick rod under the lateral uniform load. This method was defined as a geometrically nonlinear analytical method. Moreover, the deflection deformation and stability of the derrick members were analyzed, and the practical calculation formula was obtained. The Ansys analysis results were compared with the calculation results in this paper.

In 1921 oil was struck in Signal Hill, a previously agricultural area. Speculation and poorly regulated drilling followed. Wells, sumps, and derricks surrounded houses. Fires, leaks, soil and air pollution, noise, and industrial accidents proliferated. To thwart annexation by Long Beach, Signal Hill incorporated as an independent city in 1924, but problems continued. The city formed the Signal Hill Redevelopment Agency in 1974. Redevelopment dramatically transformed Signal Hill. By 2011, residential neighborhoods and commercial space characterized the city. While wells continue to operate in cul-de-sacs and shopping center parking lots, oil and community have learned how to coexist.

Résumé :
Abstract This article uncovers the hidden history of Desk and Derrick, a female-only petroleum industry employees’ club, to emphasize the importance of clerical work and support staff to oil industry development. In doing so, it demonstrates that despite the oil industry's mythology of individual inventors and lucky wildcatters, oil was remarkably similar to other large-scale scientific and engineering enterprises during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, oil's white-collar and administrative jobs expanded rapidly. And in this industry as in others, women were fundamental to oil industry technological development and labor conflicts. Desk and Derrick's was a haven for working women, providing community, training, and leadership opportunities in an industry deeply hostile to female employees. The club provided numerous outreach and educational campaigns included seminars, workshops, fieldtrips, and conventions. These events showcased female competence and technical knowledge, clashing with union derision and corporate dismissal. The club's vocal emphasis on scientific education and credentialization represented a bid for female inclusion within an increasingly technically complex professional world. However, entrenched workplace sexism and union hostility to changing labor structures limited member opportunities. Ultimately, Desk and Derrick's middle-class aspirations allied the club with industry rebranding efforts and helped support industry automation and union-busting. Desk and Derrick valorized industry engineers and scientific professionals, spreading narratives of prosperity through technology that coincided with industry-wide efforts to repair oil companies’ reputations as greedy, wasteful, and exploitative. In turn, midcentury oil companies promoted Desk and Derrick as a convenient, grassroots way to spread their message.

Velociraptor is the name of extinct dinosaur from the Cretaceous Era and a drilling rig left behind by a company that died during last year’s COVID-19 event. Both creatures have a larger-than-life image. The dinosaur is famous as a terrifying presence in the Jurassic Park movies. The cinematic terror was modeled after a far larger ancestor of the Velociraptor, a dinosaur the size of a wolf that fed on small animals, according to an account in National Geographic. The Raptor rig, which was famous as Canada’s entry into the race to become the world’s first fully automated land rig, was created by a company that ran out of cash in the summer of 2020 after the deal to drill its first well was cancelled. Its true capabilities will not be known unless the current owner finds a customer willing to support the work needed to finish the rig and find a first customer. Still, the story of the Raptor offers a look at the skills, resources, and partners needed to bring an automated rig to life. The Raptor was conceived in a different era, back when North American drillers were racing to keep up with the demand arising from the shale boom, oil was selling for $100/bbl, and it took a lot longer than it does now to drill a horizontal well. Among the beneficiaries was Reg Layden, a rig designer who had just developed an ultrafast-drilling heavy coiled tubing rig. The innovation drew positive notices, but drillers were not about to embrace coiled tubing, so he designed a rig with an automated rig floor that could connect sections of pipe far faster than humans. His vision of the future was equipped with two derricks to allow continuous connections. One derrick would be connecting a section of pipe while the other would be readying the next one. They would roll back and forth, allowing one to be over the drill center while the other was readying the next stand. The startup, Raptor Rig, brought in Halliburton as a backer. It bought 23% of the startup shares and began a series of cash advances at a time when competitors including Schlumberger and NOV were developing their own drilling automation innovations. By 2015, the price of a barrel of oil had dropped to around $50, but an investor who was acting as spokesman for Raptor, Cameron Chell, predicted it would have a working rig by 2017, according to a story in Rigzone. That deadline came and went and the advances from Halliburton exceeded $25 million. Work ended sometime during the summer of 2020. The depth of the trouble was revealed when Halliburton filed suit at the end of July 2020 demanding payment for the nearly $29 million loaned to Raptor, which was secured by the rig and other property, according to court records in Calgary, Alberta. That pushed the company to seek bankruptcy protection. Since Raptor lacked the cash to pay its debts, the court appointed a receiver to sell the assets to raise as much money as possible to pay its creditors.

Résumé :
The derrick of a drilling ship is a kind of dynamic ocean derrick which is often applied to drilling operations for ocean engineering. Comparing with land rig derrick, the operating environment of drilling derrick is more complicated with not only the regular functions of static force but also the dynamic loads induced by wind, wave and current. Therefore, this paper takes a drilling derrick as example to make clear of the dynamic characteristics of the drilling derrick under the action of dynamic loads from outside environment with the finite element software ANSYS as tool to accomplish the modal analysis of the drilling derrick. According to the natural frequency and the vibration mode of the drilling derrick after modal analysis, the deformation response and the weak parts of the drilling derrick under different motivation can be predicted, and some improving suggestions can also be illustrated as well. This paper completed the dynamic analysis of the drilling derrick by modal analysis, and moreover, the displacement response and the stress of the drilling derrick varied with time can also be obtained. As consequence, the conclusion can be taken as reference for design of the drilling derrick, safety application and life sustainment.

Résumé :
Aiming at the problems of deflection and operation safety of permanent derrick of freeze sinking shafts, the mechanism analysis of uneven settling of the derrick foundations in frost-thawed soil was conducted. In addition, research on ground stabilization and derrick deviation rectification technologies was also studied in this paper based on the engineering practice of derrick of auxiliary shaft in the Dingji Coal Mine. Firstly, since the soil texture and artificial freeze temperature field are uneven, the bearing capacity and compression modulus of soil mass decrease after freeze thawing, resulting in uneven settlement of the foundation soil of the derrick footing and causing the deflection of the derrick. The finite element numerical analysis indicates that, in the event of uneven settling, the greatest tensile stress in the derrick structure of Dingji auxiliary shaft increased by 39.83% and the largest pressure stress increased by 33.33%. Secondly, this study used sleeve valve pipe single-fluid static pressure grouting technology to reinforce the foundation of the derrick footing. The reinforced depth of grouting is 32 m, and every derrick foundation has adopted three circles of grouting holes for grouting reinforcement. Meanwhile, the hydraulic synchronous jacking system was used to rectify the deviation of the derrick, restoring the centre line of derrick ascension to the original design state. Finally, the practice of grouting, foundation consolidation, and derrick deviation rectification projects of the Dingji auxiliary shaft suggest that, after grouting reinforcement, the rate of foundation settlement is gradually decreased and tends to be stable. This has resulted in uniform settlement, and through four basic jacking, the deflection of the derrick has been corrected to its initial design state.

Abstract. Oil rig derrick is a large and complex metal frame with lots of bars and complex force. Moreover, the use of working condition is complex and harsh, so it is quite necessary to analyze strength and calculate oil rig derrick. In this paper, with the basic structure and force characteristic of JJ225/42-KC type oil derrick, the ANSYS finite element software is used to establish JJ225/42-KC type oil derrick structure finite element model. The strength and stability analysis of the maximum hook load working condition, the working wind load working condition and the maximum wind load working condition of three combined working conditions indicates that the overall structural design of JJ225/42-KC type oil derrick is reasonable with good both dynamic and static characteristics and the derrick meets the requirements of the strength. What is more, the derrick has a excellent overall stability. In the end, the strength of the lifting devices and the derrick leg pin of JJ225/42-KC type oil derrick are calculated and checked, showing that all meet the requirements of the strength.

Conventionally, the influence of guy wire and wind load on derrick was often ignored in the static strength analysis of derrick of truck-mounted workover rig, it does not accord with the actual working conditions. This paper made the finite element analysis for one derrick of Truck-mounted workover rig through ABAQUS software. The author derive the maximum static hock load which derrick can bear, and reasonably shorten projective radius of guy wire, under different static hock load and wind load, determining the weakest position of derrick. Truck-mounted workover rigs are widely used in the filed of workover and drilling operation, due to their characteristic of power maneuverability and convenient to use. Derrick is the mainly working part of workover rig, as well as the weak links of workover. In order to guarantee relatively high security performance, we should accurately make simulated calculation for carrying capacity of derrick in the process of designing. The author derive the maximum static hock load which derrick can bear, and reasonably shorten projective radius of guy wire, by using the ABAQUS FEM system, apply for statics analysis of derrick under different static hock load and wind load.

Résumé :
The static strength and stability of a derrick structure (78.5m high) after its members removed partly are researched. The derrick is modeled by three-dimensional spatial beam elements based on ANSYS. By the static analysis, the strength of the derrick after its member removing partly is larger than that of the original derrick structure since some loads disappear. From the buckling analysis, it can be found that the stability reduces drastically when removing some members.

Résumé :
K-type derrick of inclined drilling rig that is top driving is usually loaded by axial compression, lateral force and concentrated torque simultaneously, and is more prone to out-plane instability due to its poor torsional rigidity. Here the upper segment of derrick was simplified as cantilever beam-column with laced-bar lattice structure. Stability model was established by energy method, and Ritz method was employed to obtain deformation curves for lateral deflection and torsion. Effects of dip angle of derrick and position of top drive on deformation were analyzed. At last the out-plane instability process of derrick is presented by increasing longitudinal compressive force gradually. For ultimate loads of well drilling condition, out-plane stability requirement of derrick is met.
