Résumé :
Over the past few years, there has been a significant intellectual and artistic emphasis on the manner in which one considers or approaches the end of life. This is in conjunction with a renewed ethical discussion about choosing the manner and time of one’s death in light of a diminished quality of life. Large populations across the world are ageing, presenting unique challenges to healthcare and civic infrastructure. The planet is suffering because of a climate crisis, due to the overburdening of resources. In light of all this, it is argued in this contribution that a renewed theological consideration of death is necessary. In his theology about the Trinity, Jürgen Moltmann makes a remark about his understanding of the perichoretic unity of the persons of the Trinity, in which the persons of the Trinity “cede” space for one another. Ceding space creates space (room) for authentic existence. This contribution considers and utilises Trinitarian “spatial” theology as foundation for rethinking the complexity and balance of life and death. It is ultimately argued that “creating space for death” could serve as a foundation for an ethical framework for decision-making, as well as foster a compassionate community that provides space for each other’s diversity – in life and in death.

Résumé :
This paper refers to a selected fragment in an ethnographic study on children’s subjectivization processes through digital technologies concerning children’s interaction with the digital world and how their different cultural tendencies reflect virtual space. Children’s digital world experiences, and their new media preferences have become an important part of their peer culture. Studies on children’s peer cultures and on the effects of technological devices on human beings commenced in the 1990s within various disciplines, for example, Aarsand studied children’s interest in computer games, while Turkle focused on human-machine relations. During the 2000s, virtual space changed the trajectories of those studies into other fields. However, studies focusing on people’s interaction with technology have rarely been directly related to children’s agency, or the sociology of childhood. Therefore, this research presents a new approach to childhood studies by using traditional concepts with changing perspectives. The main purpose of this study is to reveal how children’s peer cultures and also individual agencies have been shaped through digital technologies including online activities. For this whole study, various techniques were used to analyse children’s interactions with the virtual world by focusing on their opinions regarding technological development in the world. The parts selected for this paper are based on several clips of interviews, the topics of which are: freedom in virtual space in a comparison with real – virtual worlds on the basis of their limit(less)ness; the possible relations between humans and machines; the possibilities of surviving on ‘internetlessness’; children’s relations with online games according to social media preferences, and interaction with virtual spaces in general.

Bielby, Matthew Iain. « Ultra low power cooperative branch prediction ». Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/14187.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Branch Prediction is a key task in the operation of a high performance processor. An inaccurate branch predictor results in increased program run-time and a rise in energy consumption. The drive towards processors with limited die-space and tighter energy requirements will continue to intensify over the coming years, as will the shift towards increasingly multicore processors. Both trends make it increasingly important and increasingly difficult to find effective and efficient branch predictor designs. This thesis presents savings in energy and die-space through the use of more efficient cooperative branch predictors achieved through novel branch prediction designs. The first contribution is a new take on the problem of a hybrid dynamic-static branch predictor allocating branches to be predicted by one of its sub-predictors. A new bias parameter is introduced as a mechanism for trading off a small amount of performance for savings in die-space and energy. This is achieved by predicting more branches with the static predictor, ensuring that only the branches that will most benefit from the dynamic predictor’s resources are predicted dynamically. This reduces pressure on the dynamic predictor’s resources allowing for a smaller predictor to achieve very high accuracy. An improvement in run-time of 7-8% over the baseline BTFN predictor is observed at a cost of a branch predictor bits budget of much less than 1KB. Next, a novel approach to branch prediction for multicore data-parallel applications is presented. The Peloton branch prediction scheme uses a pack of cyclists as an illustration of how a group of processors running similar tasks can share branch predictions to improve accuracy and reduce runtime. The results show that sharing updates for conditional branches across the existing interconnect for I-cache and D-cache updates results in a reduction of mispredictions of up to 25% and a reduction in run-time of up to 6%. McPAT is used to present an energy model that suggests the savings are achieved at little to no increase in energy required. The technique is then extended to architectures where the size of the branch predictors may differ between cores. The results show that such heterogeneity can dramatically reduce the die-space required for an accurate branch predictor while having little impact on performance and up to 9% energy savings. The approach can be combined with the Peloton branch prediction scheme for reduction in branch mispredictions of up to 5%.

Résumé :
Zionism represents a turning point in the rise of the nation-state to its present near-ubiquity, a national movement which did not construct an identity concurrently with its embrace of nationalism, but reconstructed a diaspora to fit it. I explore how early Political Zionists, particularly Theodor Herzl, perceived both the push and pull of nationalism, and why they were drawn to adopt an ideology and political structure whose basic principles, I argue, were intrinsically hostile to Jews. I begin by examining the socialist Moses Hess as a forerunner and microcosm of later Zionism, arguing his work is underpinned by anxiety about social heterogeneity. The second chapter focuses on portrayals of diaspora, its contradictions and the ambivalence they caused towards less assimilated Jews, nonetheless used as models for national identity. I continue by investigating the countries Herzl looked to as partners on the world stage and models of nationhood, arguing his vision of nationhood was far broader than that of most nationalists and involved a recognised role among other nations. The fourth chapter concerns understandings of 'homeland' and the relationship between people and territory, concluding Zionism's effect is achieved, not just by inhabiting Palestine, but by public desire and effort to do so. I devote my final chapter to concepts of modernity, its perception as both paradoxical and inescapable, and how national historical narratives arrange history into a rational, linear structure. While Zionists left many presumptions of nationalism and modernity unchallenged, most importantly that both nation and state transcend political divides, my conclusion stresses those presumptions they accepted, those aspects they saw as inescapable, and those they pragmatically performed belief in, to achieve Gentile acceptance of Jewish nationhood. I surmise that it was this sense of inevitability, along with the difficulties of diaspora, which gave Jews reason to make displays of accepting the nation-state.

Bartlett, Keith Alan. « Space and symbolism in the Restauration Novelle : with particular reference to Jeremias Gotthelf's 'Die Schwarze Spinne', Adalbert Stifter's 'Der Hochwald' and Franz Grillparzer's 'Der Arme Spielmann' ». Thesis, University of Leicester, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35089.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The study looks at symbolism, especially the symbolism of space and visuality, in three Restauration Novellen. Gotthelf's Die Schwarze Spinne presents a religious dilemma in spatial form. Specific motifs such as changing shape and absence of position become consistent correlates of evil. If the godless characters are foreigners who have abandoned their former homes, the Christian ones affirm and restore existing space, remaining where they were born. This contrast relates to the over-riding concept of "Neu-gier" in the Novelle. Gotthelf's ultimate rejection of anything new is given spatial form and placed within its ethical, political and religious contexts. As in Gotthelf's Novelle, the landscape described in the frame of Stifter's Der Hochwald creates spatial norms which embody ethical values. By contrast, the remainder of Novelle - dealing with Clarissa's love for Ronald and the Swedish sacking of her father's castle - portrays deviations. These two strands of plot also run in parallel, with the fall of the castle emerging as an allegory of Clarissa's loss of innocence. In observing this disaster through a telescope she witnesses her own moral downfall. But the castle also appears as a "dice", the ultimate symbol of fate. The question of responsibility is therefore never resolved. In Grillparzer's Der Arme Spielmann the elements of place, position and movement have narrative functions. Above all they develop the antithesis between Jakob and "das Volk". This antithesis possesses a moral dimension, with absence of movement generally conveying an allegiance to the past. While covert forms of "theatrical" symbolism sustain the opposition of Jakob and society, the description of the festival also creates a network of analogies between them. The narrative is also sustained on various, conflicting levels concurrently, presenting a world which is dialectical - simultaneously discordant and harmonious. This all-pervasive relationship finds its ultimate expression in Jakob's room.

This study asks how the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin affects its visitors. The study comprises a quantitative survey of 500 visitors. First the study introduces the theories of memory by Jan and Aleida Assmann and Horst-Alfred Heinrich. This is followed by the concept of the so-called representative public space that locates the memorial topographically. This chapter also shows the historical context of the memorial. It describes the development processes of earlier monuments to remember the victims of the Holocaust in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic between 1945 and 2005. The study then shows the development process of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. There are no theories on the effects of memorials in the social sciences. The study uses Pierre Bourdieu''s theory of art sociology as well as a study on the impact of memorial sites by Bert Pampel and a study on the emotional effects of paintings by Dorothee Halcour as a theoretical frame. The most resultant hypothesises tested by the research state that visitors differ in their reactions to the memorial according to their education, their nationality and their age. Furthermore the study presumes that the circumstances of visiting the memorial affect how people react to the memorial. The results show that visitors with lower levels of education are less often able to develop an understanding of the memorial compared to visitors with a higher education background. The results indicate that these visitors are excluded from the intended remembrance of the Holocaust when the materialization of the memorial is implemented with artistic measures. Nationality plays a significant role too and influences visitors when judging the memorial. Germans more often have negative and less often positive judgements than foreign visitors. Finally the results of the research are discussed in the context of the cultural debate around the significance of memorials.

Senkbeil, Friderike.

The aim of this project was to elucidate the specific Tacitean representation of the urbs Roma in comparison to other literary representations and the material Rome of the Tacitean age which as part of a specific construction of past and memory reflects a subjective “Romerlebnis” that exemplifies important aspects of former values and norms. In particular, the investigation focused on how Tacitus perceives, presents, connotes and functionalizes the city, its urban spaces and topographies. In both historiographical works of Tacitus, the city of Rome appears hardly as a monumental and physical space (“Anschauungsraum”). The image of the urbs appears therefore extremely selective. In pivotal passages of the Histories, Rome and its central urban spaces, most notably the Forum Romanum, the Capitol and the Palatine, form a central part in the narrative with a highly memorializing function. In these passages it is especially striking, how Tacitus reacts to former narratives (esp. Livy) by transforming their semantics of space into something new. In doing so, he creates new literary monumenta that do not only remind the reader of the horrible events of Civil war from 69 AD, likewise they act as reminder since they also imply didactic and moralizing effects. In the extant texts of the Annals, the city of Rome and its urban spaces appear less explicitly, and less dramatically than in the extant texts of the Histories. Whereas in the Tiberian narrative, the city – as the emperor – does not seem to be present at all, topographical references increase in the Claudian and especially in the Neronian narrative in which the urbs-capta motive becomes particularly obvious. The city appears as an “Aktionsraum“, a space of action, in which moral decline reaches its peak. Rome is transformed into a “Heterotopie“, that Tacitus contrasts with the idealized Rome from the early period.

Résumé :
As board real estate becomes more precious and market demand for increased functional density in modules rises, engineers are looking at 3-dimensional packaging to provide the solutions. Stacked die technology, which involves stacking the die one above another, is fast becoming the preferred packaging option for memory applications in handheld consumer products where board space is a premium. The current study focuses on the stacked die wire bonded CSP (SCSP). The CSP offers reduced package size while the vertical stacking provides a smaller form for multi-chip integration compared to a horizontal layout. In some test chip designs, it has been observed that passivation cracks occur on the functional surface of the top die as a result of thermal cycling. Stress analysis using the finite element method has been carried out to understand the effect of package parameters on die stress under cycling conditions. The distribution of the stress components that may cause this passivation cracking are discussed. The stress magnitudes observed in the SCSP are compared with those of a single die package where no passivation cracks have been observed to obtain a quantitative perspective of the stress. Results reported for parametric studies include the effect of variation of die thickness, spacer size and thickness, and thickness of overmold compound above the die. Finally, design considerations for two-die, over-molded, wire-bond, stacked die packages are presented based on the above study.

Résumé :
Water is usually introduced into a die insert in die casting through a water line to reduce the temperature of the die insert and thus prevent its cracking. In many cases, a drilled waterline circuit is not possible due to confinement of the space. Bubblers or baffles then become typical water passage systems for die insert cooling. This paper presents an experimental study of the relative effectiveness of bubbler and baffle in die insert cooling. An internally channeled steel cylinder was designed as a die insert, with the blind channel drilled for water-cooling. Commercially available bubblers and baffles were inserted in the channel and water was introduced to cool the specimen when it was either heated in an air furnace or cyclically dipped into a molten aluminum bath. Thermocouples were mounted inside the wall of the cylinder to monitor the variation of the insert temperature under various cooling conditions. Experimental results indicate that both the bubbler and baffle can effectively lower the surface temperature of a die insert, with a bubbler being more suitable to cool a specific “hot spot” than a baffle. For a given cooling channel, within the experimental range, the bubbler with a smaller inner diameter has a better cooling effect to a “hot spot” than a bubbler with a larger inner diameter. Increasing the water flow rate always enhances the heat transfer between the cooling water and the sidewall of the cooling channel.

Résumé :
Abstract RECENTLY POWER MOSFETS have been used for satellite power supplies. NASDA has developed such a Power MOSFET for the space projects. It has a metal-type package, and the die is attached by Au-Si alloy to achieve high temperature operation (Tj=200°C). The fabricated device failure was detected thermal resistance tests after high temperature storage test at 200°C for 1000 hours. This failure is caused by the die peeling between the Au-Si eutectic alloy layer and the Ni plating surface on the Cu-W substrate. In this paper, we describe the failure mechanism and improvements in the package design and fabrication process. The newly developed power MOSFET for space use exhibits good performance in the high temperature storage test.

Résumé :
It is an important problem in the polymer extrusion of complex profiles to balance the flow at the die exit. In this paper, we employ simulated annealing-kriging meta-algorithm to optimize the geometric parameters of a die channel to obtain a uniform exit velocity distribution. Design variables for our optimization problem involve the suitable geometric parameters for the die design, which are the thickness of the large channel and the length of the narrow channel. Die balance is based on the deviation of the velocity with respect to the average velocity at the die exit. So the cost function for the optimization problem involves the minimization of this deviation. For the design of numerical experiments, we use Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) to construct the kriging model. Then, based on the LHS points, the numerical solutions are performed using Polyflow, a commercial software based on the finite element method and is specifically designed to simulate the flow and heat transfer of non-newtonian, viscoelastic fluids. In our simulations, a HDPE (high density polyethylene) is used as extrusion material. Having obtained numerical simulations for N = 60 LHS points in two-dimensional parameter space (t and L), the optimization of these parameters is carried out by Simulated Annealing (SA) method in conjunction with kriging model. We show that kriging model employed in SA algorithm can be used to optimize the die geometry.

Résumé :
Controlling and eliminating defects, such as macro-porosity, in die casting processes is an on-going challenge for manufacturers. Current strategies for eliminating defects focus on the execution of a pre-set casting cycle, die structure design or the combination of both. To respond to process variability and mitigate its negative effects, advanced process control methodologies may be employed to dynamically adjust the operational parameters of the process. In this work, a finite element heat transfer model, validated by comparison with experimental data, has been developed to predict the evolution of temperatures and the volume of liquid encapsulation in an experimental casting process. A virtual process, made up of the heat transfer model and a wrapper script for communication, has been employed to simulate the continuous operation of the real process. A stochastic state-space model, based on data from measurements and the virtual process, has been developed to provide a reliable representation of this virtual process. The parameters of the deterministic portion result from system identification of the virtual process, whereas the parameters of the stochastic portion arise from the analysis and comparison of measurement data with virtual process data. The resulting state-space model, which can be extended to a multi-input multi-output model, will facilitate the design of a model-based controller for this process.

Résumé :
Abstract Die stacking package technology continues to become the trend of manufacturing integrated circuits (IC) today. This primary design offers smaller and thinner packages that would optimize board space and assembly cost. Consequently, this packaging technology has posed challenges in conducting failure analysis. Nondestructive techniques like acoustic microscopy are bound for advancement to make them feasible for use in this packaging technology. This paper will present frequency domain imaging in the field of acoustic microscopy as applied in the detection of delamination defect on a stacked die package. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) was used as an algorithm to reconstruct and reveal the delamination defect which was not clearly detected in time domain imaging of the package. Frequency domain imaging was found to offer a better image contrast of delamination. This gives the failure analyst another approach to characterize the location and extent of delamination defect, a set of information that is substantial in the root cause analysis of adhesion related failures in stacked die packages.

Résumé :
Finite element analysis, together with topology and free-size optimization is used to design a lightweight die cast automotive front seat backrest frame when subjected to loads prescribed by ECE R17 European government regulations and additional loads which are predicted in an event of crash. In particular, an effort is made here to study the characteristics of a die cast automotive front seat backrest frame and develop a method for predicting the optimized material and support rib distribution which provides a lightweight seat which satisfies both strength and deflection requirements in a design space which includes the action of multiple load cases. An existing commercially available die cast backrest frame serves as the reference design space. Both 3D surface and solid models are created for representation as shell and solid finite element models for analysis. The objective function for topology optimization of the 3D solid model is to minimize mass of the component subject to stress and deflection constraints and is used as a guide in determining optimal geometric distribution of stiffening ribs. When the shell model of the reference seat is subjected to free-size optimization with this same constraint and objective given, an optimized material distribution measured by shell element thicknesses is obtained. For the topology optimization, manufacturing constraints of preferred draw direction and symmetry are applied in order to obtain an optimized material distribution which can be manufactured in the die-cast process. The procedure followed in this work generated an optimal material distribution and stiffening ribs in a lightweight die cast automotive seat backrest frame when subjected to multiple load cases. An overall reduction in weight of 13% is achieved over a reference commercially available die cast backrest frame component.
