Texte intégralThe learning management system Canvas was introduced at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2016. Most teachers began using the platform in 2017, however the transition to a new system has its difficulties. This study has examined what influences teachers’ use of Canvas and which method they used to learn how to use the tool. The aim of the study has been to investigate how KTH can develop support for teachers and how Canvas usability can be improved. Seven teachers in mathematics were interviewed about their experiences. The interviewees were selected to highlight problem areas that can be experienced by teachers, which is therefore reflected in the results. All interviews were conducted shortly before KTH switched to digital education inconnection with the covid-19 pandemic. The study shows that teachers primarily use functions to share information and communicate with students. Functions that are more educational and interactive were less used. Four themes have been identified as explanations: Attitude, Needs, Structure and Technical Difficulties. Teachers’ attitudes and needs influence the teachers' motivation to expand their use and learn more about Canvas. The system’s structure and technical difficulties constituted additional obstacles that gave the teachers a negative experience. Among other things, the teachers had difficulty navigating and getting started with the platform. The teachers mostly learned how to use the system by trial and error, and many of the help functions were not used. This was partly because several of the teachers were oblivious to the existence of some of the help functions, but also because the teachers were not motivated to learn more than necessary. Based on the study, it is recommended that KTH reduces the threshold for starting to use Canvas. They could, for example, develop accessible templates that teachers can use in the beginning. If it is desirable to make teachers use more of Canvas functionality, it is also recommended that KTH work with the teachers’ motivation and drive so that they are willing to develop their work and increase learning. Formal education could be a way, however it must be designed according to the needs of the teachers. Finally, it is recommended to perform user tests to explore how the usability can be improved.

Texte intégralResults from research studies showing the positive effects of formative assessment on students’ learning have spread across the world and in Sweden. Assessment of student achievement has two different functions depending on why the assessment is made. When the goal is to monitor learning the assessment is formative and when the goal is to evaluate what the student has learnt at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it to some standards it is summative. Both types of assessments are needed but some research studies indicate that formative assessment practices may be impeded by excessive focus on grades and by the design of digital learning platforms. Not many research studies have been made examining formative assessment practices in social studies at upper secondary school. Nor have many research studies been made that examine formative assessment practices and how they are perceived by students and teachers a school year during a pandemic. The aim of the study is to find out how formative assessment in social studies is perceived by students and teachers at upper secondary school. The aim is also to examine how they perceive formative assessment practices a school year during a pandemic with a mix of on-site and distance learning. A qualitative method was used to answer the research questions. Two groups of students from different grades studying the same core course “Samhällskunskap 1b” and their teacher were interviewed. The data gathered from the interviews were analyzed with Paul Black’s and Dylan Wiliam’s five strategies formed on the basis of their research on learning and assessment. These strategies are described as useful tools in education to answer questions about where the student is in his/her learning process, where the student is going and how to get there. The result of the study shows that the digital learning platform that the students and their teacher use is a beneficial tool for them to visualize where the student is in the learning process in relation to the learning goals. Furthermore, the result shows us that the students perceive the feedback that they receive from their teacher as useful in guiding the student where to go next and how to get there. The written feedback combined with a summative-like assessment helps the students taking the next step in the learning process. Consequently, this study shows that formative and summative assessments harmonize. Peer assessment is not as much valued by the students as the formative assessment they receive from their teacher, since they do not regard their peers being sufficiently qualified to give feedback. The result of the study shows that students do get training in making self-assessments. However, students in second grade consider themselves as owners of their own learning to a greater extent when compared with students in first grade. The result shows us that the teacher perceives that opportunities to give students oral feedback have diminished during the pandemic and that the practice of peer assessment has been given less priority during these extraordinary circumstances. Finally, the result shows us the potential of digital tools being used for formative assessment practices when education is a combination of learning at school and online.

Texte intégralThe Swedish school is being digitized and many schools use digital learning platforms to manage everything from administrative tasks to communication of specific tasks between teachers and students. However, these platforms do not follow any government directives or requirement specifications. Instead the platforms’ design is governed by the school management's expressed needs. This can lead to less fair and equivalent grades on a national scale since the platform dictates how grading is performed and structured to some extent. The goal of this study is twofold. First, it aims to create a deeper understanding of i) how mathematics teachers at the upper secondary school work with assessment in their current teaching practices and ii) teachers experiences of how digital platforms fit into their work with assessment. This study also aims to investigate whether the teachers’ work with assessment follows Skolverket’s (the National Agency for Education in Sweden) directives for assessment. This study limits itself to only examining the work and experiences of teachers in mathematics. To investigate teacher’s opinions and experiences of grading, six upper secondary teachers in mathematics were interviewed. Based on the interviews, a questionnaire survey was developed to quantify collected qualitative data. The questionnaire was created digitally and distributed online via social media to practicing teachers. 50 teachers answered the questionnaires. A comparison between the teachers' assessment process and Skolverket's directives and guidelines was performed to problematize structures within the assessment process. The study's results show that teachers to a greater extent let students assess their own work if the teachers have access to the tool Kunskapsmatrisen. Most teachers use private spreadsheets for documenting summative assessment. The guidelines set by Skolverket are followed to a wide extent but this can be because the guidelines are designed to cover a broad range of teaching practices. Internal discussions is one of the guidelines that isn’t followed by 18% of teachers while increased discussions and training for teachers could be beneficial for their ability to implement platforms in their work with assessment. The study concludes that teachers for the most part are satisfied with their work regarding grading on learning platforms. They appreciate the ability to document results online but express that several improvements still have to be made. The results indicate that the responsibility for the platforms’ shortcomings is partially caused by the schools’ board whom is responsible for purchasing and implementation of platforms. This study offers new viewpoints worth investigating in order to further better the understanding of learning platforms and their role in assessment.

Texte intégralProgramming usually includes the use of a computer and a text editor, yet programming courses given at institutions of higher education often conclude with traditional written exams to assess the students’ acquired practical knowledge. This traditional examination method restricts the complexity of programming problems and may result in unintentional subjective assessments. Previous research on computer-based programming exams that mimic real programming conditions suggest that the assessment of the students’ acquired knowledge can be made more efficient while also simplifying both grading and administration processes. We use Bunge’s general scientific method and case study methodology to develop a system for computer-based programming exams that can be implemented at KTH Kista. Our results suggest that programming exams can be safely performed on the students’ own computers by booting the computer into a restricted preconfigured system environment with blocked Internet access from a usb flash drive. Paired with the open-source learning management system Moodle, the exams can be administered electronically and designed with automatic grading processes. To help exam invigilators we also developed an observation tool that can detect if the restricted system environment is circumvented. Despite the lack of real tests of the system due to the circumstances caused by the ongoing pandemic, we conclude, with the support of previous studies, that our proposed solution for computer-based programming exams can improve the quality and efficiency of programming courses and their examination processes.

Texte intégralThe Swedish school system has since the 2000s, received overall support from the government to develop digitized teaching methods. Despite this, repetitive annual reports on IT usage in schools revealed shortcomings in user knowledge and development of IT-skills. The purpose of this study is to identify how digital learning platforms are used and why digitized communication between teachers and students in high schools have not achieved the expected results. The following research questions were relevant in the study: How is the use of learning platforms in secondary schools today? Why has the digitization not yet been seen as an effective tool in teaching? The study is based on empirical data, where data is collected from interviews with principals and teachers from six different high schools in Gävle and Uppsala. A random sample of 80 students also completed a questionnaire with the aim to represent the general attitude to the school’s digital communications system for sharing of learning material. Furthermore, a literature review helped to evaluate problem areas and gaps in the research presented. The results show that the schools’ learning platforms are used as tools for information sharing, where the information is transferred in a vertical direction from teachers to students. Today the teaching platform is mainly used due to demands from the school management, and not as a channel for bidirectional communication, where teachers and students can discuss solutions to the tasks and problems, or to get feedback and advice. The result also shows that teachers are experiencing technical defects in parts of the learning platform and that lack of systematic work procedures prevent it from effective use. This is a barrier that limits the effectiveness of communication with regard to the development of knowledge through learning platforms.

Texte intégralIt’s becoming all the more common that people use digital learning platforms to learn new skills.Learning platforms makes it possible for people to learn at their own pace and without having tobe at a specific place at a specific time, as long as they have access to a computer and an internetconnection. These digital platforms called Massive Open Online Course or MOOC have beendesigned with a linear course structure that does not allow users to diverge from the establishedpath. Because there is an unlimited number of users taking courses at their own pace at the sametime it is impossible for instructors to provide feedback or help when users get stuck during thecourses. This can negatively affect the users motivation and result in increased time spent in thecourse or that the user gives up. One way to avoid this is to design the platform and the courses topromote intrinsic motivation by breaking the linear structure and make it more flexible. Intrinsicmotivation means that the person is motivated based on their interest, and can be broken down intothree categories: autonomy, competence and relatedness. This study was conducted using a designresearch approach where different design elements were assembled into a prototype to see if theycould contribute to a sense of autonomy. This study resulted in different proposed designguidelines for how digital learning platforms can be designed to promote autonomy.

Texte intégralLearning Management Systems (LMS) enable an efficient and flexible area for educational institutions where students and teachers can meet and interact. LMS are used for administration, communication and examination. The user's attitude and definition of the platform is of great importance for what the experience of the platform ultimately becomes. In the platform's two-sided market, users influence the experience of other users through what functionality and strategy they choose to use. The purpose of the study is to identify the role the LMS Canvas has at Malmö University. Which leads to the question: How can the role of the LMS be explained on the basis of teachers and students' experiences? Qualitative content analysis presents the platform’s network effects, character and practice. In the conclusion, we present that the organization is able to change in its approach, that the involvement of both students and teachers is crucial to achieve the positive network effects and that the social scope is crucial for the use of the platform and its effect on the organization.

Texte intégralEducation and teaching have evolved, and todays teaching environment utilises many different tools and methods. A digital learning platform, such as Canvas, is one of those tools. KTH:s instance of Canvas is administrated by E-learning management object (The Department of Learning in Engineering Sciences, u.å.). The aim of this study was to investigate how students at KTH, who use Canvas, perceive the digital learning environment, especially Canvas. The focus question used for the study is: How do students experience Canvas' functionality in conjunction with their studies? Tools for conveying knowledge have moved from existing only in the physical world to having partially moved into the digital world. This provides several new opportunities for communication and adaptation. The use of computers in everyday life and studies has accelerated recently. The computer has become an obvious tool for communication within the world. Student life is not limited to the physical environment; it has expanded to the digital one. The start for one of the first digital platforms for learning at KTH was born in the mid-90s in one of KTH:s own courses and later to become Bilda /PING PONG. Canvas is an LMS (Learning Management System) which can be used to support students in their studies, and includes functions such as quizzes, grade follow-up, discussion forums and more. The transition to Canvas began with a pilot test in the autumn of 2016 (Stenberg,2017). The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is something that Sweden has signed, which in turn affects KTH as a Swedish state university. The fourth goal is that which is primarily aimed at schools, universities and colleges: Ensure an inclusive and equal education of good quality and promote lifelong learning for all (Agenda 2030, u.å.,s. 12). The goals go hand in hand with KTH:s values (KTH, u.å.) and KTH:s policy for sustainable development (Policy för hållbarutveckling för KTH, u.å.). This thesis is a small step on the path towards fulfilling those goals. In order to survey how students perceive their digital learning environment, with regard to functions and navigation, a sequential exploratory approach with mixed methods was used. This study contains a pre-study with semi-structured interviews and a quantitative survey. The pre-study consisted of four interviews and a thematic analysis of the transcription of the interviews. Even if the selection is made for convenience (Denscombe, 2019), the group from which the interviewed students were selected from had all branches at all KTH:s campuses represented. Therefore, the group could be considered representative. This meant that the pre-study could not be seen as universal but gave an indication of the direction for the survey. The majority of the survey's statements was created by the themes that emerged in the analysis of the pre-study interviews. Thematic analysis has been used on both the content of the transcript of the interviews and for the free text answers in the survey. To get a quick overview, an indicative colouring of the results was created. The source data was deidentified at the time of transcription and the questions for the survey were carefully selected so that "the principleof data minimisation" (GDPR, 2016/ 679 reason 156) was adhered to. The pre-study identified two strong themes: "read and manage files" and "Usage", each with three sub-themes. These formed the basis for the statements in the survey. The survey had 614 answers, accounting for 4.5 percent of the 13,514 full-time students in 2019 (KTH Årsredovisning 2019.pdf, u.å., s. 4). The response rate slowed down towards the end of the response time, which shows a saturation of students' willingness to respond. In summary, the majority responded with Canvas being a positive experience and that it helped them in their studies. In general, there were challenges in communication both in messaging and forumfunction. The survey results indicate that the students were quitepositive about the platform and thought the platform had potential, unlike the informants in the pre-study who were more critical and frustrated with the system. By extending the physical classroom with online resources, the student can continuously develop, as the tutoring is not confined to the teaching hours. The forum and direct messages can be an opportunity for students to break the isolation of studying on their own and to receive support from both teachers and other students. Through assignments and quizzes, the student can practice and gain reinforcement in the acquisition of knowledge. Digital platforms may increase accessibility, regardless of whether the student needs speech synthesis, or studies better at different times of the day. The areas with challenges are the discussion forum, ease and efficiency of retrieving documents and files, and Canvas messaging functions. In addition, the survey showed that some students only used Canvas for the mandatory steps. Nevertheless, the students answered with a positive tone in most of the survey.

Texte intégralToday, the introductory training for the nurses of the clinic for hematology at the Karolinska University hospital is insufficient which could jeopardize the patient safety. The clinic is hoping, by using an interactive net based learning tool, to be able to streamline the nurses’ internal education, make their learning material more easily learnt and motivate them to continue learning. This thesis examined whether the clinic’s desired results could be achieved. This was examined by creating and evaluate a prototype of a learning tool. By combining theories and research about net based education, user centered design, interaction design and learning perspectives a prototype was developed for net based learning. In order to identify the nurses’ needs and situation, a pre-study was conducted in the form of surveys and interviews with the clinic’s personnel followed by an interview study with responsible staff at the clinic and the hospital. A prototype was developed and its usability was evaluated together with the nurses. The tool was also evaluated by its ability to streamline the learning of the educational material regarding Cytostatic which was given by the county council; this by designing and testing of a course. The results of the thesis identifies the factors which contributes to making a net based learning tool usable for the clinics staff. These factors, together with identifying the factors that affect their learning process, contributes to streamline the nurses’ introductory training. In conclusion, a learning tool which has been developed with affected personnel through a combination of design and learning perspectives can be made usable and education in order to ensure the nurses’ competence and contribute to an increased patient safety.
