The Hydrodyne process was used to tenderize early de-boned broiler (EB) breasts. The first objective was to determine effects of explosive and distance of the explosive to the meat surface. EB breasts were removed immediately after initial chill (45 min post-mortem), stored for 24 hours, and subjected to one of four treatment combinations. Hydrodyne treatment of 350 g at 20 cm produced the greatest increase in Warner-Bratzler shear (1.9-cm wide strips) tenderness (28.3%), and was the only treatment to increase tenderness (peak force 4.3 kg) to a level equivalent (P>0.05) to aged controls (CA

The normal aging process is accompanied by changes in cognitive function. One of the brain regions known to be an early target of the aging process is the hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe structure that is critically involved in spatial learning and memory function. The formation and maintenance of memory relies on rapid and sustainable synaptic modification, which requires new gene expression. Immediate-early genes are the first genes to be induced following relevant stimuli, and include genes that encode transcription factors, such as c-fos and zif268, and effector proteins that directly

Prospective memory (PM) refers to the type of memory utilized to execute planned actions in accordance with a specific event. PM is critical to maintaining functional independence in older adults, as it can refer to such basic acts as remembering to turn off a stove or taking one’s medication. Research suggests PM abilities decline within normal aging and to a greater extent in Mild Cognitive Impairment

By analyzing the language used in tombstone inscriptions, death notices, funeral sermons, and memoirs, this thesis reviews how cultural expectations placed on women during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries impacted the reputation of aged women. Résumé :
Early life histories of alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (A. aestivalis), collectively known as river herring, are poorly documented for Chesapeake Bay populations. Improved knowledge of these early life histories potentially will aid fisheries, habitat and resource management. Investigations were conducted following two lines. First, alewife and blueback herring larvae reared from eggs were used to investigate methods for species identification and to validate the otolith increment method for age determination. Blueback herring larvae hatched from naturally-spawned eggs wer

Résumé :
Although the cost of investment in power lines insulators is 3-5% of the total cost of the installation, the impact of their performance on reliability, failure costs, maintenance routines, etc in power systems is tens of times higher. Composite insulators were introduced 50 years ago and have been used around the world with consistently good experience. Low weight, easy handling, good performance under high pollution, low maintenance costs, and resistance to vandalism are some of their advantages. Nevertheless, acid rain, salty dust deposition, corona discharges, ozone, UV radiation, and humi

The evolution of atomistic-level nanostructure during the early stages of both standard, high-temperature T6 heat treatment, and low-temperature secondary ageing after interruption of the former (T6I4), has been investigated in rapid hardening Al-Cu-Mg alloys using a variety of microscopy and microanalytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) and atom probe tomography (APT). In order to carry out this objective, quantitative data-analysis methods were developed with respect to new cluster-finding algorithms, specifically desig

This thesis developed new pupillometry paradigms to objectively measure melanopsin function in humans with healthy or diseased eyes. It was determined that melanopsin function is independent of age and refractive error. The novel quadrant field pupil protocols detected melanopsin dysfunction in the very early stages of glaucoma (in suspects) when it is difficult to detect visual dysfunction with conventional ophthalmic tests. The outcomes advance understanding of melanopsin function in humans and introduce optimised pupillometry protocols for translation to clinical settings to guide treatment
