Résumé :
EDF-Based real-time scheduling approach is one of the efficient way of scheduling the recurrent real-time tasks in both soft real-time and hard real-time systems. EDF algorithms entile heavy overhead due to lower scheduling and huge migration. In this paper, an exploratory procedure has been presented for reprocessing of neglected task sets and also examine, whether an improved heuristic set attributed as Enhanced shared CAche Performance (ENCAP) can improve the shared cache performance which processes the task set based on Earliest-Deadline-First (EDF). An Object-Oriented real-time code reusable scheduling components which is designed from the scratch referred as LITMUSRT has been used to test the efficiency and average-case accomplishments where per task utilizations are shortened and overall utilization are not restricted. We also discuss the implementation and experimental evaluation of Task-Repo procedure for co-scheduling task sets, under the utilization of 50-60% (per-task) on small to medium-large multicore LINUX SYSTEM.

Résumé :
Today, due to recent advances in wireless technology, new products using wireless sensor networks are being employed. However, despite the excitement surrounding wireless sensor networks, it is not immune to the problem of energy consumption. To overcome this deficiency and enhance the real time aspect, a growing interest lies in the implementation of an “Earliest Deadline First” (EDF) scheduler. Thus, in this paper, the authors establish a management policy of periodic tasks that is preemptive, multiprocessor, and dynamic. The authors implement a real-time scheduling policy as a part of a user-level threads package under the Linux operating system as Linux does not support EDF. Furthermore, this paper describes the technique of the EDF scheduler and how it can yield to significant power savings.

Résumé :
In the article the authors analyze the institutional basis for strengthening the EU security and the implementation of specific projects designed to expand cooperation between the Member States in the defence and security sectors. The point at issue is about Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO); the Coordinated Annual Review on Defence (CARD) and the European Defence Fund (EDF). The relevance of the comprehensive study of PESCO, CARD, EDF, which activities are aimed at ensuring the strategic component of cooperation, the analysis of the defence sector and funding priorities in the security sphere of the Union have been proved. The authors claim that PESCO has become a key strategic initiative of the EU, CARD allows coordinating the development of military capabilities in the Member States; the EDF was created to coordinate, increase investment and improve defence interoperability between EU member states. The challenges faced within the functioning of these initiatives have been analyzed. It is alleged that a key challenge for the CARD is the unwillingness of Member countries to share national defence plans, as well as the available and potential coordination and harmonization of defence planning within NATO’s Defence Planning. The peculiarities of specific projects financed within the European Defense Fund (“Ocean 2020”, “Eurodrone”, “SPIDER”, “EuroSWARM”, “TRAWA”, “ACAMSII”, “Gossra”, “Vestlife”) have been analyzed. There is continued progress in the field of the EU security and defence: numerous defence projects have been initiated under PESCO; there is a synchronization of defence planning through the CARD; the investments in defence are stimulated by financing the defence research projects through the EDF, the improving military mobility is continuing; coordination of the EU-NATO cooperation is improving, etc.

Résumé :
Abstract Workstations, CPU etc are in a period of transition, moving from a relatively slow network links and data oriented services to a high set fibre optic services and more diverse services. As such many of the hard and soft real time will not only demand high bandwidth but also a predictable and guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) along side, which is not offered in a best effort network (BE). The provision and terms of (QoS) to real-time applications is a key issue in promising broadband packet switched networks and network of other sorts. Applications such as voice and video typically require QoS guarantees in terms of end-to-end data transfer delays. Supporting the diverse and of course, heterogeneous delay requirements of applications with widely varying characteristics requires packet scheduling schemes more sophisticated than First-In-First-Out (FIFO) at each switch in the network(2) are one of most accepted examples of such scheduling schemes. This points to the convincing need for a QoS, which apportion a high network utilization to be realized. In this paper, we focus on the EDF scheduling scheme, since it is known to provide the optimal delay performance (2), in the deterministic environment, and can for this reason be expected to perform well in the real time setting as well. The large amount of bandwidth as promised by the future network also offer the integration of real time applications, hard or soft.

Résumé :
AbstractA new approach to goodness-of-fit for Pareto distributions is introduced. Based on Euclidean distances between sample elements, the family of statistics and tests is indexed by an exponent in (0,2) on Euclidean distance. The corresponding tests are statistically consistent and have excellent performance when applied to heavy-tailed distributions. The exponent can be tailored to the particular Pareto distribution. The goodness-of-fit statistic measures all types of differences between distributions, hence it is also applicable as a minimum distance estimator. Implementation of the test statistics is developed and applied to estimation of the tail index in three well known examples of claims data, and compared with the classical EDF statistics.

Résumé :
This paper presents a novel design of a coprocessor that performs hardware-accelerated task scheduling for embedded real-time systems consisting of mixed-criticality real-time tasks. The proposed solution is based on the Robust Earliest Deadline (RED) algorithm and previously developed hardware architectures used for scheduling of real-time tasks. Thanks to the HW implementation of the scheduler in the form of a coprocessor, the scheduler operations (i.e., instructions) are always completed in two clock cycles regardless of the actual or even maximum task amount within the system. The proposed scheduler was verified using simplified version of UVM and applying billions of randomly generated instructions as inputs to the scheduler. Chip area costs are evaluated by synthesis for Intel FPGA Cyclone V and for 28-nm TSMC ASIC. Three versions of real-time task schedulers were compared: EDF-based scheduler designed for hard real-time tasks only, GED-based scheduler and the proposed RED-based scheduler, which is suitable for tasks of various criticalities. According to the synthesis results, the RED-based scheduler consumes LUTs and occupies larger chip area than the original EDF-based scheduler with equivalent parameters used. However, the RED-based scheduler handles variations of task execution times better, achieves higher CPU utilization and can be used for the scheduling of hard real-time, soft real-time and nonreal-time tasks combined in one system, which is not possible with the former algorithms.

Résumé :
The Tube Support Plate blockage, also named clogging, is a complex phenomenon that can occur in the steam generator of Pressurized Water Reactors. This deposit of iron oxides, that can reduce the coolant flux and constraint the primary tubes, could have significant consequences on heat exchanges and the integrity of the primary tubes. Since 2014, an experimental program carried out jointly by CEA-EDF, has been performed on a representative dedicated equipment, the COLENTEC loop at Cadarache. The physico-chemical properties of the deposit formed (chemical composition, thickness...) were determined at the end of each experimental campaign lead at thermohydraulic and chemical stable conditions. ... In order to determine the influence on clogging of parameters such as the chemistry, the temperature, the pressure in an on line process and without performing separate experimental campaigns, a method of measurement on radioactive tracer, the gamma emitter 59Fe, has been studied by our laboratory. First, a modelization with a monte carlo code, MCNP, has been carried out with the geometrical configuration of the Tube Support Plate zone of COLENTEC in order to determine the most adapted measuring station. These calculations had shown that a 30% efficiency, high purity, germanium detector, with a specific collimation would be able to detect the accumulation of 59Fe in the Tube Support Plate of COLENTEC. Then, in order to improve and ensure those important online measurements, our laboratory has proposed the installation of two additional measuring stations. One will be dedicated to a second on-line measurement, with a gamma detector of the same type, but positioned on a section of the loop remote from the previous area, to verify that there is no significant secondary deposit evolution elsewhere on the circuit. The last additional gamma measurement station will consist of a low background system able to carry out 59Fe concentration measurements of liquid samples taken from the loop during the test. This paper presents the context of this experiment and then focuses on the spectrometry measuring stations, modelizations and tests.

Real-time networks are traditionally built on proprietary standards, resulting in a interoperability issues between different real-time netork implementations and traditional data networks mainly used in back office operations.

Continuity and supplier independence are a cause of concern with current

proprietary real-time networks.

This project evaluates the capability of providing real-time traffic over

switched Ethernet with EDF scheduling algorithm implemented at both the

switch and the node. By using OMNET simulation tool at packet level, it

is shown that the EDF implementation in switched Ethernet can guarantee

real-time traffic over the network and at the same time supporting non real-time traffic.

Résumé :
Electronic commerce (EC) in its various forms is perceived by many organizations as the way that business will be conducted in the future. Much of the current wave of interest in EC is driven by new, readily available technologies like the Internet and the World Wide Web. The excitement regarding Web Commerce has lead many to believe that EC is relatively new. In reality, EC in the form of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has existed for 30 years and accounts for far more business than WC. It is the preferred, and often required, way of doing business with many large organizations such as the U.S. Federal Government, Ford, General Motors, and Wal-Mart. While EDI has existed for 30 years, it has not experienced the rapid adoption rate that Web Commerce has in the last few years. Currently, less than 10 percent of U.S. businesses and less than 5 percent of world businesses utilize EDI. The adoption rates for other recent information technologies, such as the World Wide Web and e-mail, have been much higher in a much smaller time frame which leads to the question of why has diffusion of EDI occurred so slowly compared to other recent information technologies. According to Kalakota and Whinston (1996), it is not due to technology problems with EDI but instead with its benefits. This is in conflict with Emmelhainz (1990) and Sokol (1995) who point out the tremendous benefits to firms that adopt EDI. This dissertation researches the reasons for the low EDI adoption rate based on financial benefits. It then develops an economic model that computes the cost savings which result when an EDI system is implemented. Sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the economic mechanisms of EDI. Based on the model developed here, recommendations are made for changing EDI to increase its market penetration. Finally, based on the recommendations an alternative EDI system, JEEDI, is developed. The financial effectiveness of the JEEDI system over existing EDI systems is then demonstrated using the economic model developed here.

Johann, Victoria Anne. « Development and Implementation of an Automated SEM-EDX Routine for Characterizing Respirable Coal Mine Dust ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73367.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis describes the development and use of a computer-automated microscopy routine for characterization of respirable dust particles from coal mines. Respirable dust in underground coal mining environments has long been known to pose an occupational health hazard for miners. Typically following years of exposure, coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are the most common disease diagnoses. Although dramatic reductions in CWP and silicosis cases were achieved across the US between about 1970-1999 through a combination of regulatory dust exposure limits, improved ventilation and dust abatement practices, a resurgence in disease incidence has been noted more recently – particularly in parts of Appalachia. To shed light on this alarming trend and allow for better understanding of the role of respirable dust in development of disease, more must be learned about the specific characteristics of dust particles and occupational exposures. This work first sought to develop an automated routine for the characterization of respirable dust using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX). SEM-EDX is a powerful tool that allows determination of the size, shape, and chemistry of individual particles, but manual operation of the instrument is very time consuming and has the potential to introduce user bias. The automated method developed here provides for much more efficient analysis – with a data capture rate that is typically 25 times faster than that of the manual method on which it was based – and also eliminates bias between users. Moreover, due to its efficiency and broader coverage of a dust sample, it allows for characterization of a larger and more representative number of particles per sample. The routine was verified using respirable dust samples generated from known materials commonly observed in underground coal mines in the central Appalachian region, as well as field samples collected in this region. This effort demonstrated that particles between about 1-9μm were accurately classified with respect to defined chemical categories, and suggested that analysis of 500 particles across a large area of a sample filter generally provides representative results. The automated SEM-EDX routine was then used to characterize a total of 210 respirable dust samples collected in eight Appalachian coal mines. The mines were located in three distinct regions (i.e., northern, mid-central and south-central Appalachia), which differed in terms of primary mining method, coal seam thickness and mining height, and coal and/or rock mineralogy. Results were analyzed to determine whether number distributions of particle size, aspect ratio, and chemistry classification vary between and within distinct mine regions, and by general sampling location categories (i.e., intake, feeder, production, return). Key findings include: 1) Northern Appalachian mines have relatively higher fractions of coal, carbonate, and heavy mineral particles than the two central Appalachian regions, whereas central Appalachian mines have higher fractions of quartz and alumino-silicate particles. 2) Central Appalachian mines tended to have more mine-to-mine variations in size, shape, and chemistry distributions than northern Appalachian mines. 3) With respect to particle size, samples collected in locations in the production and return categories have the highest percentages of very small particles (i.e., 0.94-2.0μm), followed by the feeder and then the intake locations. 4) With respect to particle shape, samples collected in locations in the production and return categories have higher fractions of particles with moderate (i.e., length is 1.5 to 3x width) to relatively high aspect ratios (i.e., length is greater than 3x width) compared to feeder and intake samples. 5) Samples with relatively high fractions of alumino-silicates have higher fractions of particles with moderate aspect ratios than samples with low alumino-silicate fractions. 6) Samples with relatively high fractions of quartz particles have higher fractions of particles with moderate aspect ratios and higher percentages of very small particles than samples with no identified quartz particles. 7) Samples with high fractions of carbonates have higher percentages of particles with relatively low aspect ratios (i.e., length and width are similar) than samples with no identified carbonate particles.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to see how an organization can prepare themselves to overcome the barriers when implementing a quality management system. When introducing a new management system regardless of its intentions, there are several obstacles, or rather barriers, which an organization will face and ultimately have to deal with in order to assure a successful implementation of a QMS. Not knowing beforehand what problems may arise from adopting a new management system may halter the process of introducing the new management system and add costs, resources, and time to the introduction phase. Although there are general barriers and problems with implementing a quality management system, there are also specific barriers for each and every organization. It is of significant importance that organizations become aware of those areas of which they need to pay the most attention to when implementing a QMS. There will be forces for and against the change process of a QMS and the latter needs to be anticipated and dealt with for a successful implementation of a QMS. By using a case organization and the managers within, we were able to assess the pre-conditions at the organization and identify which barriers that were specific for them. As managers are the ones implementing the new system as well as controlling, maintaining and continuously improving it, it was necessary for us to acquire their opinions and ideas. A qualitative research approach was taken and semi-structured interviews were held at the case organization EDB Card Services AS in Mo i Rana, Norway, which included 6 managers ranging from administrative level to operations level. We found that the biggest barrier for the case organization was the fact that departments were not as inter-dependent, but rather independent from each other which is not compatible with a quality management system. It was evident that the departments could learn from each other and that spreading knowledge and proper documentation had to be improved. At the case organization one of their specific barriers were the sharing and handling of documents, this barrier could be eliminated by educating staff and managers of how to make proper documents with a clear purpose, and distribute documents to the right person at the right time. The managers were motivated and willing to spend time assuring that the quality requirements of the QMS is maintained however stressed the fact that more resources would be needed in order to achieve this. Our findings lead us to believe that general guidelines for how to implement a QMS are insufficient to successfully handle the inherent problems and barriers when changing from“what is”, to “what could be”. The specific barriers which arise when organization take a look at themselves and identify these are probably more likely to affect the implementation process more than those that are general. We came to the conclusion that EDB Card Services AS needs to deal with the barriers that we identified as forces against a QMS, namely: departmental barriers, documentation of processes and procedures, leadership, resources, and information sharing and documentation. To effectively prepare the organization for the implementation of a QMS these barriers needs to be dealt with. Furthermore, we recommend that the organization educate and train those responsible for the introduction of a QMS and that an independent steering group/committee is established.

The number of healthcare institutions that has embraced Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as an effective and efficient method of neonatal care especially in Edo State, Nigeria has not multiplied even after more than a decade of its recommendation by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2003. Nigeria ranks seventh among the ten African countries where newborns have the highest risk of dying with over 700 newborn deaths per10, 000 live births. This is worrisome because Edo State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria that contribute about 6,700 neonatal deaths to the 255,500 mortality rate recorded in Nigeria annually. This has led to a concern about the knowledge and attitude of the key drivers in neonatal care of simplified methods aimed at reducing neonatal mortality despite previous training efforts. The development of a strategy to enhance the early implementation of the WHO KMC guidelines in all healthcare facilities across the state was therefore conceptualized. Strategies to increase implementation are considered important to the success of KMC because reducing neonatal mortality rate is contextual. This research aimed to explore and describe the application of the KMC guidelines by the nurses, administrators and parents of preterm infants in the care of premature babies and to develop strategies to enhance its early implementation in healthcare facilities in Edo State, Nigeria.

Résumé :
Nowadays, decommissioning of nuclear power plants has become a key issue for nuclear industry in Europe. The phasing out of nuclear energy in Germany, Belgium and Sweden, as well as the early closure of nuclear units in applicant countries in the frame of EU enlargement, has largely contributed to consider decommissioning as the next challenge to face. The situation is slightly different in France where nuclear energy is still considered as a safe, cost-effective and environment friendly energy source. Electricite´ de France (EDF) is working on the development of a new generation of reactor to replace the existing one and erection of a new nuclear power plant could start in the next few years. Nevertheless, to achieve this objective, it will be necessary to get the support of political decision-makers and the acceptance of public opinion. Due to the growing concern of these stakeholders for environmental issues, their support can only be obtained if it is possible to demonstrate that nuclear energy industry will not leave behind unsolved issues that will be a burden to the next generations. In this context decommissioning of the first generation of EDF NPPs constitutes a prerequisite for the erection of a new type of nuclear power plant. This paper will present the programme defined by EDF for the decommissioning of its nine already shutdown reactors (Fig. 1). The reasons of the recent evolution of EDF decommissioning strategy will be explained and the key issues that will contribute to the successful implementation of this programme will be addressed. Finally, what has been achieved on sites so far and major planned activities will be described.

Résumé :
Abstract Fatigue is identified as a significant degradation mode that affects nuclear power plants world-wide. Recent research on the interaction between fatigue degradation and the influence of PWR environment has caused international concern and triggered numerous research programs [1]. In this context, several codes & standards, including the RCC-M code, have included some technical mandatory or non-mandatory sections to address the issue. In RCC-M, this is compiled in the Rules in Probation Phase 2 and 3 [2]. Due to the novelty of these rules, there is room for improvement for the specific and practical implementation of these rules. AFCEN has hence launched a benchmark exercise at the end of 2019 to help increase the quality of these rules. Part 1 of this paper [3] states that EDF and CNNC/NPIC have launched an effort to benchmark their respective codes on fatigue calculation including the EAF algorithm. In the second part of the benchmark, the two companies started the code comparison based on a benchmark case provided by AFCEN. As stated previously, the 2016 edition of RCC-M code integrates the modifications made to the Code in Probation Phase 2 and 3(RPP)[2], which respectively modify the fatigue design curve for austenitic stainless steels and Nickel base alloys, as well as integrate environmental effects in the fatigue evaluation for austenitic stainless steel components. In this paper, a comparison between RCC-M RPP and NUREG/CR-6909 rev.1 [3] is proposed. The comparison focuses on the technical details of the strain rate calculation and transient combination method. The cumulative fatigue usage factor with or without considering EAF according to RCC-M RPP – 2 and RPP – 3 is given by EDF, using code_aster and its POST_RCCM operator. CNNC/NPIC will provide multiple sets of results including cumulative fatigue usage factors according to RCC-M RPP and NUREG CR/6909 rev. 1 respectively using its own software. Comparison of selection for peak and valleys points, Sn and Fen values are also presented. Differences of the algorithms of the two codes are also discussed.
