Résumé :
Ethical issues involving egg donation are very similar to those of sperm donation, but the complexity of obtaining eggs raises a different and evolving set of issues. Informed consent is difficult when the risks to the donor are unknown and the donor is offered substantial compensation. Special considerations arise when family members offer to donate eggs or when same-sex couples or single men need oocytes to build a family. Genetic advances have increased concerns about over-screening donors and eugenics. Advances in oocyte vitrification have allowed the creation of donor egg banks, which have increased the commodification and globalization of donor egg options. Differing laws and practices between countries have increased cross-border reproductive care. Finally, social egg freezing is now a reality, which could change the future of egg donation services.

Résumé :
Gamete donor anonymity has become an increasingly active area of legislative, bioethical, and empirical interest over the last decade or so. This chapter begins by detailing the very different status of gamete donor anonymity, contrasting the United States (where the law does not prohibit it) with the rest of the world (where it has been largely prohibited by law) and examining the effects of these policies. The chapter then examines the major arguments that have been offered in favor of and against mandating nonanonymous gamete donation. In particular, it focuses on the effects of removing anonymity on supply and arguments in favor of ending sperm donor anonymity based on the welfare of donor-conceived children or rights claims by them. The chapter also more briefly considers ethical and legal issues related to donor compensation, accidental incest, information reciprocity between donors and recipients, and reproductive tourism.

Résumé :
In this book, I undertake the first comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of the politics of the “wild west” of egg donation in the United States. If egg donation is so publicly recognizable and evokes such social interest, why does the U.S. system fail to regulate it? This book challenges conventional thinking around egg donation politics, exploring answers to how egg donation is defined, debated, and regulated in the United States, as well as exploring the logic of why the U.S. system of politics is organized the way it is around egg donation. Building upon theories of normative femininity in reproduction and scientific research, this book examines the relationships between subnational politics and policy in contemporary egg donation. I use three interdisciplinary areas of inquiry—policy framing, body politics and morality politics, and representation by gender and political party to answer long-standing questions about egg donation and politics in the fields of women’s and gender studies, political science and policy studies, and bioethics. Employing case studies, qualitative narrative analysis, and quantitative public-policy analyses of an original data set of over eight hundred state-level public policies around egg donation, this book clarifies the ways that gender, race, and class, as well as political institutions and actors, create systems of egg donation politics and regulation, particularly at the subnational level.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the law on parenthood and parental responsibility. The law has had to address a number of questions.Who is a child’s mother when a woman gives birth to a child conceived as a result of egg donation by another woman? Is the child to have two mothers? Can a female-to-male transsexual person become a child’s father? Is a mother’s same-sex partner to be recognised as her child’s parent too? If so, in what sense? As this last question suggests, the law’s response is also complicated by the fact that the notion of ‘being a parent’ has several different facets.

Résumé :
Without volunteer blood a large proportion of healthcare delivery would not be possible. Blood donation is an archetypal altruistic and prosocial act, but like all altruism may also be motivated by selfish reasons. Key among these are the prosocial and moral emotions (e.g., gratitude, shame, guilt, anger). This chapter shows how blood donation can be used to manage negative emotions (e.g., guilt) and enhance well-being (warm-glow, pride). It also shows how negative emotions such as anger promote prosociality. It draws implications for interventions and develops a model showing how emotions and memory are linked across the donor cycle to influence behavior.
