For physicians in training and their mentors, the process of learning and teaching clinical medicine has become challenging in the electronic medical record (EMR) era. Trainees and their mentors exist in a milieu of incessant box checking and laborious documentation that has no clinical educational value, limits the time for teaching and curtails clinical cognitive skill development. These unintended consequences of the EMR are juxtaposed against the EMR’s intended benefits of improved patient care and safety with reduced medical errors, improved clinical support systems, reduced potential for

Artificial ventilation of the middle ear through the tympanic membrane has been practised for almost two centuries, but with varying degrees of success. As a result, the maximum motor voltage is limited by the state of charge (SOC) of the traction battery. When the battery voltage is low the maximum motor speed and power are limited. This voltage limitation can be solved by using a traditional boost converter-based inverter. However, this approach has several disadvantages. The m

Résumé :
Electronic medical record (EMR) systems are increasingly used in developing countries to improve quality of care while increasing efficiency. There is little systematic evidence, however, regarding EMRs' benefits and costs. This case study documents the implementation and use of an EMR system at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Three EMR systems are now in operation for primary care, outpatient and inpatient hospital care. The evidence suggests that the primary care system has improved efficiency of care delivery and human resources management, and may have decreased incidence of

Résumé :
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) primarily affects the lower respiratory tract and can lead to severe respiratory illness, particularly in older adults and those with compromised immune systems. Currently, there is no cure for RSV; hence, prevention through vaccination is critical. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved single-dose vaccines for adults aged 60 years and older, recommended for administration prior to the RSV season. Methods. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to assess the impact of an RSV vaccine informational session tailored to primary care providers on

Résumé :
By storing carbon dioxide CO2 captured from the atmosphere or point sources into oil fields, carbon capture and storage with enhanced oil recovery (CCS-EOR) increases the fields’ output by raising reservoir pressures. Since CO2-EOR has been experimented with for decades and the revenues from the additional oil production improve projects’ economics, CCS-EOR is the most readily deployable CCS technology. However, public support for CCS-EOR projects is sometimes contested on the grounds that the resulting increase in oil production undermines their environmental benefits. Addressing this concern

Résumé :
A partitioning inter-well tracer test (PITT) determines the residual (or even remaining) oil saturation (SOR) in the flooded region between well-pairs. This type of tracer test can be used to identify improved oil recovery (IOR) targets, evaluate IOR projects, evaluate enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods, and improve reservoir description for efficient hydrocarbon production. Thus, the main objective of the work with inter-well oil/water partitioning tracers developed within the framework of the IOR Centre is to provide tools and methodologies to improve reservoir description for efficient man

Résumé :
This study, undertaken on behalf of IEAGHG by ERM, explores the potential to reduce the cost and accelerate the uptake of power CCS technologies (or, more simply, “power CCS”). Given the widely adopted global mission to achieve net-zero energy-related CO2 emissions, CCS will be essential to reducing emissions in the power sector (via power CCS technologies). The findings from the study will be of interest to the broader energy community but, in particular, should benefit project developers, the finance community and policymakers.

Résumé :
This case study underscores the significance of digitalization in healthcare, exemplified by Korea's successful integration of electronic health record (EHR) systems, which has markedly enhanced clinical services quality and efficiency. Focusing on the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), a leading national multispecialty academic medical center in Korea, the case study details the hospital's journey towards digitalization through the implementation of its interoperable EHR system, BESTCare. Through focus group interviews with field-deployed staff, the study reveals the critical

Résumé :
Electronic monitoring (EM) has emerged as a popular tool for curbing the growth of large prison populations. Evidence on the causal effects of EM on criminal recidivism is, however, limited and it is unclear how this alternative to incarceration affects the labor supply of offenders and the outcomes of their family members. We study the country wide expansion of EM in Sweden in 1997 where in offenders sentenced to up to three months in prison were granted the option to substitute incarceration with EM. Our difference-in-differences estimates, which compare the change in the prison inflow rate
