Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) has been the causative agent of diarrhoeal outbreaks for decades. EHEC virulence relies on a type 3 secretion system (T3SS), which directly translocates T3SS effectors into the host cell cytoplasm. Transfer and shedding of a rifampicin-resistant strain of Escherichia coli (RREC) among cattle was studied in a research feedlot comprised of 30 pens of 11 or 12 yearling steers. The EspF protein is translocated into host cells by the type III secretion system of enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EPEC and EHEC).
