Résumé :
It seems obvious that that educational activity establishes conditions for the development of a person capable of combining ancestral traditions and values while maintaining their distinctive ethnoculture. This paper investigates how integrating ethnocultural material into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) university courses contributes to nation-building and students’ identity development while at the same time exerting impact on ESP curriculum advancement. The empirical part of the research involved 104 first-year engineering students learning English as a foreign language for specific purposes. The experiment demonstrated that exposing students to regional material and enabling them to communicate in English about their region empowers them in their national and regional identity, while contributing to nation-building goals of university education. The findings of the study reveal that integrating ethnocultural material into ESP university courses positively impacts both students’ motivation and their national identity development. Résumé :
This study used a person-centered approach to distinguish groups of bicultural (national and ethnocultural) individuals in culturally diverse Mauritius. We focused on experiences of harmony or conflict among blended bicultural individuals and used representative data from the three numerically largest ethnocultural groups (Hindus, Creoles, and Muslims; Ntotal = 1,768). Cluster analyses indicated three groups of individuals with different identity profiles: conflicted blends (50%), harmonious blends (41%), and low blends (9%). Conflicted compared with harmonious blends were more concerned about keeping their ethnic group distinct and about the societal recognition of cultural diversity. In addition, higher social distance vis-à-vis outgroups was found among conflicted blends compared with harmonious blends. The findings for the three identity profiles are discussed in relation to existing theories on bicultural identity, Mauritius’ approach to ethnocultural diversity, and the country’s three main ethnocultural groups.

Résumé :
In this article the problem of ethnocultural identity formation is considered in the context of the personal development problem, namely, as a person’s awareness of oneself, one’s environment as well as of oneself in one’s relations with other people. Along with the genetically determined prerequisites, ethnocultural identity formation is influenced by sociocultural factors, a person’s real life. The ethnocultural identity phenomenon is closely related to the methodological understanding of the foundations of deep, fundamental life meanings, values, and priorities. Ethnocultural identity and everything that relates to it – roots, historical destinies, ethnic culture, historical memory – are the most important values and life meanings of every person.

Résumé :
Cross-cultural differences in academic discourse as a field of applied linguistic research became mainstream at the end of the 20th century. Two fundamental concepts emerged at that period: one highlighted universal features of academic discourse, the other focused on ethnocultural peculiarities of cognitive and textual structures. Research in the field of academic discourse becomes particularly significant when applied to training and education of academic staff. Accepting the idea of universal features of academic discourse, we, however, tend to support the concept claiming that academic writing style may contain markers of ethnocultural identity of their authors. So, the aim of our research was to identify markers of ethnocultural identity in medical research texts. The study included comparative discourse analysis of research focused medical texts created by English-speaking (ES) and Russian-speaking (RS) authors. The results obtained have drawn us to the conclusion that despite universal features that scientific medical texts of the same genres share, they nevertheless manifest specific properties depending on the linguistic and cultural affiliation of their authors, i.e. markers of ethnocultural identity. This knowledge can contribute to international academic communication.

Résumé :
The article addresses the problem of ethnocultural identity in the context of research by representatives of symbolic interactionism. The problem of ethnocultural identity acquires relevance in the epoch of globalisation, when the differences between nations and ethno-social groups are erased, ignoring the folk traditions, customs, rituals, i.e. the historically and culturally established values that distinguish one nation from another, on the one hand, and enrich the multinational culture of their country, on the other hand. The purpose of the study is to reveal the conditions for the formation of ethnocultural identity and the factors influencing it. The works by G.H. Mead, C.H. Cooley, E. Goffman, J. Habermas and other authors were analysed within the framework of the research. The study revealed that the formation of ethnocultural identity involves assimilation of the values, norms, beliefs of “own” socio-cultural community, which is possible in the process of social interaction, in the course of meaningful communication in terms of symbolic interactionism.

Résumé :
This article examines relationships between social identities and acculturation strategies of Russians (the ethnic minority) in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania (RNO-A). The sample included 109 grandparent–parent–adolescent triads from ethnically Russian families ( N = 327). We assessed acculturation strategies, ethnic and national identities (identification with the Russian Federation), republican identity (with the RNO-A), regional identity (with North Caucasus), and religious identity. EFA combined five identities in two factors, labeled Russian ethnocultural identity (comprising ethnic, national, and religious identities) and North-Caucasian regional identity (comprising identities involving the republic and region). The means of the identity factors remained remarkably stable across generations, with a somewhat stronger Russian ethnocultural identity. A structural equation model revealed that Russian ethnocultural identity was a negative predictor of assimilation (the least preferred acculturation strategy), whereas North-Caucasian regional identity was a positive predictor of integration (the most preferred strategy) in all generations. We concluded that Russian ethnocultural identity is important for maintaining the heritage culture whereas North-Caucasian regional identity promotes participation of ethnic Russians in the multicultural North-Ossetian society.

Résumé :
Literature reviews (Casas, 1984, 1985; Ponterotto, 1988) on the status of racial/ethnic minority research indicate that one of the problems in coming to definite conclusions about the effectiveness of counseling with the culturally different is the lack of research accounting for heterogeneity within ethnic groups. This study investigates ethnic identity as a possible variable tapping into intra-group variability with persons of Chinese origin currently living in Canada. Specifically, Atkinson, Morten & Sue (1979)'s model of ethnic identity development is examined in relation to its validity with this ethnic group. Atkinson et al.'s (1979) Minority Identity Development model postulates five stages minority persons experience in trying to discern and appreciate themselves based on their culture of origin, the mainstream culture and the relationship and meaning between the two. These stages are Conformity, Dissonance, Resistance and Immersion, Introspection and Synergetic Articulation and Awareness. Based on the model, 81 items were generated, translated and administered to 44 participants via Q-Sort Methodology. Also, relevant demographic information was collected. Factor analysis and qualitative analysis for Q-Methodology as suggested by Talbott (1971) generated four factors. The emerging factors reflected the Conformity, Dissonance, Resistance and Immersion, and Synergetic Articulation and Awareness Stages. Thus, based on the partial support for the five-stage model among persons of Chinese origin; a four-stage model was generated. The analysis of results suggests the following conclusions: (1) heterogeneity within ethnic groups must be accounted for it is accounted for within the mainstream culture; (2) ethno-cultural identity emerges as a viable construct (variable) tapping into intra-group differences; (3) Q-Methodology appears as a culturally non-intrusive method; and (4) ethno-cultural identity may mediate the counseling process.

Résumé :
This thesis explores the meaning of the Montreal identity from the perspective of Montreal's ethnocultural and linguistic minorities. Generally speaking, it is commonplace for authors in the academic literature on Montreal to describe the city and its identity in terms of its multicultural and cosmopolitan sensibilities. While this forms part of what it means to be a Montrealer, this is not the only significance that this project accounts for. In examining the opinion sections of the Montreal Gazette from the period of September 4th, 2012 to the period of April 7th, 2014 ̶ a period that coincides with the Parti québécois' eighteen months in power under the leadership of Pauline Marois ̶ this thesis reveals that the meaning of the Montreal identity is tied to both the aforementioned multicultural and cosmopolitan sensibilities, as well as a sentiment of exclusion rooted in an ethnic interpretation of the Québec nation. Accordingly, this research also shows how these aspects of Montrealness contribute to the building of a Montreal identity that is meant to be distinct and even opposed to Québec identity.

Claimed by several authors such as Ricoeur, MacIntyre or Taylor, the narrative model of identity —which argues the narratives we tell define who we are— has been the target of much criticism in the academic literature over the last few decades. According to some of these critics, the concept of narrative identity is inherently conservative and a prime example of conflictual language. This discredit brought on narratives must be taken seriously in view of the specific nature of the inequalities that are evolving in Israel between Jewish Israelis and Palestinian Israelis and which we will propose to interpret as narrative inequalities. Does this mean that we have to get out of the narrative language? This is an alternative path that we will attempt to follow, by seeking to demonstrate that we can make an emancipatory use of narrative. By drawing on the work of Paul Ricoeur, our hypothesis is that it should be possible to accept some narrative premises without this leading to the conservative consequences of communitarianism. In the final stage of this work, I attempt to use the conceptual resources of narrativity as part of a broader discussion about ethnocultural justice in order to pave the way to a theoriticalpractical model for reducing narrative inequalities in Israel, which I call ‘multinarrativism’. Ultimately, the main purpose of this research is to show that the narrative model of identity is not merely compatible with the democratic requirement of respect for pluralism, but also provides important theoretical support for policies that aim to promote greater democratic inclusion of cultural minorities

This thesis, based on the study of small-scale alternative tourism in two rural communities in Guatemala, examines the role of foreign visitors in the making of the touristic discourse, as well as the manner in which the tour and its actors relate to local politics. The history of the studied groups is rooted in the internal armed conflict: they are ex-guerillas or Ixil widows. Tourism is not their main occupation but an additional economic resource, as well as a stage for the performance of their identity and memory. These tours where not set up by foreign organizations; they fall within what can be called “bricolage”, their progressive making and adapting by local actors who rely on the help of acquaintanceship networks and international contacts –with the tourists themselves in the forefront. An analysis of the issues at stake concerning the touristic project emphasizes the importance of control over public (re)presentation of the identity of the group, both in the context of its insertion in transnational solidarity networks and in that of local power dynamics

The Wa-Paraok village of Wengding, described as "China last primitive tribe" by local and national chinese authorities, is the target of an ethnic tourism development plan. It has been staged to preserve and (re)present the Chinese “Wa nationality culture”. This thesis analyzes the socio-cultural transformations that happened in the tourism arena, considering the long history of relations between Chinese authorities and their outskirts. If the tourism plan, initiated by external agents, reconfigure the villagers’ daily life, they constantly reinvent their being in the world. The touristic arena is thus a place of dynamic reshaping of identities

Résumé :
M.A., Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatwersrand, 2011
Posttraumatic growth has been an ongoing area of interest in the field of positive psychology. In recent years posttraumatic growth has been linked with the presence of posttraumatic stress symptomatology. The existence of posttraumatic growth has been validated in a number of cultures. There are certain domains that have been implicated in the construction of the phenomenon which taps into different aspects of people’s lives like relating to others, personal strength, new possibilities and appreciation of life. Particular interest has risen with regard to whether this phenomenon develops as a function of ethnic and cultural influences. This study aimed to investigate whether there are differences in posttraumatic growth and posttraumatic stress symptoms as a function of ethnocultural identity. This was investigated by the use of self-report measures of MEIM (Phinney, 1992), Traumatic Stress Schedule (Norris, 1990), Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996) and the Impact of Events Scale Revised (Weiss & Marmar, 1997). The sample consisted of 80 students from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, at the University of Witwatersrand. Results of the multivariate analysis showed that ethnocultural identity interacts with ethnicity to moderate posttraumatic stress symptoms. Specifically, findings suggested that Black South African and Indian students who identified with their ethnocultural heritage, reported fewer PTSD symptoms. Whereas the converse was true for White South Africans and Black Africans from other countries. The more they adopted ethnoculturally informed beliefs, the more likely they were to report symptoms of PTSD. There were no significant findings regarding ethnocultural identity in relation to posttraumatic growth. Implications for further research and clinical intervention are discussed.

Rasmi, Sarah. « PERCEIVED DYADIC CULTURAL DISCREPANCIES, INTERGENERATIONAL CONFLICT, AND ETHNOCULTURAL IDENTITY CONFLICT IN ARAB CANADIAN FAMILIES ». Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/3869.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Research on developmental, family, and cross-cultural psychology has consistently found evidence that discrepancies exist between parents and their youth around individual preferences, social conventions, and personal values. In immigrant families, these issues may be compounded by cultural change. Indeed, some research has found that immigrant parent-youth dyads diverge in their heritage and settlement culture orientations and have different personal values priorities. These discrepancies, in turn, are related to poorer youth and family adjustment. In recent years, some studies have proposed that facets of the parent-youth relationship may buffer the experience of maladjustment as a function of cultural discrepancies. Therefore, this dissertation had two general aims: (1) to examine the extent to which immigrant Arab Canadian youth perceive cultural discrepancies between themselves and their parents, as well as how they relate to individual and familial adjustment; and (2) to identify specific facets of the parent-youth relationship that moderate the association between perceived cultural discrepancies and outcomes. Although research on different cultural groups as well as immigrant and ethnic minority families has increased in recent years, there is a paucity of empirical work examining Arab immigrants in Canada. This dissertation used a mixed-methods approach to comprehensively investigate youth’s perceptions of parent-youth cultural discrepancies and parent-youth relationships, and how they related to intergenerational conflict and ethnocultural identity conflict. Study 1 consisted of a series of semi-structured interviews. Using a narrative approach, 12 immigrant youth were asked to describe their individual and family experiences as Arabs living in Canada. Findings confirmed that youth perceived cultural discrepancies between themselves and their parents, which were associated with increased intergenerational conflict and ethnocultural identity conflict. However, specific aspects of the parent-youth relationship were identified as either a protective (i.e., when they were open, communicative, and supportive) or risk (i.e., when they were marked by emotional distance) factor. Study 2 was a quantitative approach to examine the prevalence of perceived cultural discrepancies, and their association with intergenerational conflict and ethnocultural identity conflict. Specifically, a series of hierarchical regressions were used to test the hypotheses that parent-youth relationships moderated the associations between perceived cultural discrepancies and conflict. Results confirmed that immigrant Arab youth in Canada perceived heritage and settlement culture orientation and values discrepancies between themselves and their parents, that perceived cultural discrepancies were associated with more conflict, and that parent-youth relationships moderated the relationship between perceived cultural discrepancies and conflict. These studies were among the first to examine these issues in immigrant Arab families in Canada. It is imperative to increase our knowledge of Arab families in Canada given their rapid population growth, cultural dissimilarity, the pervasiveness of group misunderstanding and misrepresentation that has been exacerbated post-9/11, and the likelihood that immigration from the Middle East and North Africa will surge following the Arab Spring.

In the last decades, increased and more diverse immigration has lead the government of Quebec taken different measures aimed to deal with this new reality. Thus, in 1998, the Quebec ministère d’Éducation established the Politique d’intégration scolaire et d’éducation interculturelle from which followed a Plan d’action that suggests many ways to achieve its principles and goals. To help implement this new vision, intercultural training sessions were created for teachers, non-teaching staff and principals. The study of ethnocultural diversity’s challenges in schools through intercultural training has shed light on school staff members’ point of view. Their perceptions were used along the various strategies of both researchers and trainers to further analyse the dynamic between schools and ethnocultural diversity. Many issues arose during training sessions and interviews with school staff members that are discussed in the thesis: the future of Quebec’s identity, the teacher’s ethics and various complex issues raised by school staff members. I show how the encounter with the Other obliges daily reflection on the self by the teachers, in particular, through the intercultural discourse of the actors in the school setting, the different values present in the professional milieu, and the reflexivity promoted by those in charge of their training.

There are more and more mixed couples throughout Canada (Milan, Maheux & Chui 2010) and elsewhere in the world (Cooney & Radina, 2000 ; Kalmijn, 2010 ; Neyrand, 2006 ; Shih & Sanchez, 2005) ; however, research on mixed couples and their offsprings is still scarce, and even more so in Quebec. These studies generally portray a negative picture emphasizing identity problems, mental health issues, behavioral problems and educational problems (Hud-Aleem & Countryman, 2008 ; Udry, Richard, Rose, & Hendrickson-Smith, 2003 ; Unterreiner, 2011). Our study aims to compare the experiences of young adults with one parent is of Quebec descents and the other parent immigrant, with young adults of which both whose parents are from Quebecois origine, for our control group. We focused our interest on their ethnocultural identification, the potential stress linked to that identification and it’s effect on their well-being. We also wanted to evaluate different aspects of the psychological well-being of these young adults, especially regarding self-esteem, psychological distress and problematic behavior. And finally, we wanted to investigate the academic performance of these young adults and see if one group has better results than the other one.

Résumé :
This article examines multiculturalism, focusing on the so-called ethnocultural groups which are often ethnic and national cultural groups or intergenerational communities that have some shared practices and history that members believe are constitutive of the group. It explains that liberalist multiculturalists tend to view respect for cultural groups in instrumental terms while non-liberals often argue that cultures deserve respect because they are intrinsically valuable. It suggests that the non-liberal respect argument and the identity argument avoids some ambiguities involved in liberal multiculturalism since they do not argue for group-differentiated rights because of autonomy or self-respect.

Résumé :
Border, identity, culture: ethnography of the Belarusian-Russian borderland. collective monograph / executive. ed. R.A. Grigorieva, N.G. Demeter, A.V. Gurko / Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology RAS; Center for Research of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. - M .: IEA RAN, 2020 .-- 360 p. This monograph represents the results of joint research of Belarusian and Russian ethnologists, which were carried out along the entire perimeter of the Belarusian-Russian border area: in the Gomel, Mogilev, Vitebsk regions from the Republic of Belarus; Bryansk, Smolensk, Pskov from the Russian Federation. On the basis of many years of field research, with the involvement of archival materials, data from sociological surveys, the unity and / or differences of cultural elements on different sides of the border in all their diversity were identified, and transboundary ethnocultural areas were identified. One of the key problems of the study is the peculiarities of the formation of ethnic identity in different states and in the conditions of weak ethnocultural distinctiveness of residents in the border area. The study of cross-border relations and contacts has a practical importance for the formation of various kinds of cooperation between neighboring countries. The book is dedicated for specialists in the field of ethnology and other humanities, as well as for a wide range of readers.

Résumé :
The book was compiled on the materials of the scientific conference “Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations of nations and states in the Slavic cultural discourse” (2019), held at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and devoted to the history of the nations’ personifications and generalized ethnic images in period of “imagined communities” formation. This process is reconstructing on verbal and visual sources and by methods of various disciplines. The historical evolution of such zoomorphic incarnations of nations as an Eagle (in the Polish patriotic poetry of the first third of the 19th cent), a Falcon (in the South Slavic and Czech cultures in the 19th cent), a Griffin (during the formation of the Cassubian ethnocultural identity) is considered. The animalistic national representations in the Estonian caricature of the interwar twenty years of the 20th cent., so as the functioning of the Bear’s allegory as a symbol of Russia in modern Russian souvenir products are analyzed. The originality of zoomorphic symbolism in Polish and Soviet cultures is shown оn the examples of para- and metaheraldic images in XXth cent. The transformation of the verbal and visual images of “Mother Russia” personifications in Russian Empire was reconstructed. The evolution of various allegories of ethnic “Self” and “Others” is presented by caricatures of 19th – 20th cent. in Slovenian periodic and in Russian “Satyricon” journal (1914–1918).

Résumé :
The complex depths of the creole figure in Caribbean literature and culture continue to demand further exploration, inflected as they are by the long and pervasive presence of colonialism in the region and its attendant corollaries of hierarchical social separation and ethnocultural difference inflected by perceptions of race. In the work of Jean Rhys, the complex patterns and performances of cultural identity that inform her multi-layered and multi-voiced narratives betray a deep-seated ambivalence towards England, the Caribbean, and their varied issues of identity. In her explorations of the various iterations and possibilities of the creole position in Voyage in the Dark and Wide Sargasso Sea, Rhys compels us to confront the transactional relationship between colonizer and colonized and the uncharted variations of racial, cultural, and national identity.

Résumé :
Arising from its geographical position in relation to the Western countries and the multicultural specificity of this space, Transylvania was, due to the ethnic groups of Romanians, Germans, Hungarians, and other nationalities who lived there, a promoter of both Western influences and local cultural values. The print media was the means for these nationalities to preserve their language, traditions, customs and culture. Thus, in 1920, Romanian, German and Hungarian intellectuals opened new cultural horizons, managing to overcome traditional ethnic barriers. Through their publications, they expressed respect for plurality and ethnocultural diversity, religious tolerance, and asserted at the same time their own cultural and national identity. This study intends to survey the ethnic German literature at the beginning of the twentieth century that has also been partially translated into Romanian

Résumé :
The essay examines the work of Kailstrat Zhakov (1866–1926), a Komi writer, philosopher, and a scholar of the so-called Silver Age in the Russian literary history. He was the author of an original philosophical study of limitism as well as a Komi literary epos “Biarmia”and other works. For Zhakov, the problem of personal, social, national, and ethnocultural identity was relevant at all stages of his literary career; all his life, he was trying to cross boundaries between peoples and cultures, albeit aware of his own liminality and mediality. The chapter discusses the identity problem discussed in his books“Through the Life’s Order”and “To the North, in the Search of Pam Bour-Mort”. In the series,“Songs and Thought of Pam Bour-Mort” (the last book), we encounter a dialogical-engaging and family-kindred type of worldview that is peculiar, according to György Kadar, to Finno-Ugric people. Based on this observation, I draw parallels and discover some similarities between Zhakov and Hungarian poet Andre Adi (a poem“Szeretném ha szeretnének” [I want to be loved]).

Résumé :
This study is devoted to the conceptualization of the «Gypsy of Moldova» doll, which became an ethnocultural symbol in the Soviet period. The doll the «Gypsy of Moldova», which has the status of a souvenir, made at the Chisinau toy factory by the Association of Chemical Enterprises in 1975, was sketched by S. Chervinskaya, the chief artist of the enterprise, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. The doll «Gypsy of Moldova», made at the Chisinau toy factory in the mid-70s, along with other ethnic dolls, fit into the task of producing souvenirs as an important resource for increasing the tourist attractiveness and shaping the image of the republic. The doll «The Gypsy of Moldova» is interesting because it eventually moved from the subject world to the conceptual one, concentrating in itself the ideals and problems of the Soviet era, during which the idea of those who were personified by this doll was extremely romanticized. Nevertheless, the doll the «Gypsy of Moldova», thanks to the author’s idea of S. M. Chervinskaya, still broadcasts both universal and national-cultural components, the identity of the ethnic group, being its original portrait and symbol.

Résumé :
The article presents some research approaches to the fairy-tale folklore of Bulgarians from the Republic of Moldova. According to the author, the fairy-tales texts of Bulgarians from the Republic of Moldova, their semantic, symbolic, and structural features should be researched as a local (regional) variant of Bulgarian folklore. Identification of ethnocultural markers in the fairy-tales of local Bulgarians on some different levels (such as on the subject, ethno-social and spiritual (church-religious) level) will allow to identify some peculiarities in the adaptation process of Bulgarians that migrated to a new ethnocultural zone, as well as to identify the level of preservation of basic ethnic mentality under the conditions of new “mental environment”. Thus, the study of regional ethnic culture is an interdisciplinary research, which allows discovering how localization in time and space affects ethnic culture, in general, and oral folk art, in particular.

Résumé :
The article deals with the mental-existential relationship between ethnoculture, national identity and media culture as a necessary factor for their preservation, transformation, on the example of national original algorithms, matrix models, taking into account global tendencies and Ukrainian archetypal-specific features in Ukraine. the media actively serve the domestic oligarchs in their information-virtual and real wars among themselves and the same expansive alien humanitarian acts by curtailing ethno-cultural programs-projects on national radio, on television, in the press, or offering the recipient instead of a pop pointer, without even communicating to the audience the information stipulated in the media laws − information support-protection-development of ethno-culture national product in the domestic and foreign/diaspora mass media, the support of ethnoculture by NGOs and the state institutions themselves. In the context of the study of the cultural national socio-humanitarian space, the article diagnoses and predicts the model of creating and preserving in it the dynamic equilibrium of the ethno-cultural space, in which the nation must remember the struggle for access to information and its primary sources both as an individual and the state as a whole, culture the transfer of information, which in the process of globalization is becoming a paramount commodity, an egregore, and in the post-traumatic, interrupted-compensatory cultural-information space close rehabilitation mechanisms for national identity to become a real factor in strengthening the state − and vice versa in the context of adequate laws («Law about press and other mass media», Law «About printed media (press) in Ukraine», Law «About Information», «Law about Languages», etc.) and their actual effect in creating motivational mechanisms for preserving/protecting the Ukrainian language, as one of the main identifiers of national identity, information support for its expansion as labels cultural and geostrategic areas.
