Résumé :
The purpose of the text is to present an interpretation of Theodor Adorno’s critical reading of authors considered revisionists of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly Karen Horney. We discuss critically Adorno’s favorable positioning to the Freudian conception of the individual psychic nucleus in contrast to the hasty sociologization of psychoanalysis practiced by the revisionism of Karen Horney. In the final part we try to show how the Adornian perspective ends up by making, in his own way, the same mistake of a hasty sociologization of psychoanalysis he imputed to the revisionists and advocates an theoretical emphasis on the sociological realm that seems also problematic.

Freudian Fraud can be categorized in the field of granular psychology andgeneral education. Containing ten chapters, it addresses a varied audience: psychologists, educators, physicians, journalists, priests, and preachers. Chapter one lays out the basics of Freud’s theory, the immigration of the theoryto America, and the characteristics of Freud himself: his relationship withsexual freedom, social reform, his orientation toward fame and cocaine, and hisstrong belief in occultism. Chapter two discusses the nature-nurture debate andthe issues of immigration and race in America during his time.Chapter three concentrates on the efforts of Margaret Mead and RuthBenedict in popularizing sexual freedom, including bisexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism. In chapter four, the author shows how Freud and Marxjoined forces in order to stand against Hitler’s resolution of the nature-nurturedebate. Chapter five pictures the shining days of Freud in America after thepostwar propagation of his faith. It shows how Freud became the star of stage, screen, and radio.Chapters six, seven, and eight deal with Freud’s effect on American life-innurseries, schools, jails, and prisons as well as among the intellectual elite, inpolitical parties, mental health centers, universities, and the publishing and filmindustries.Chapter nine presents an indepth discussion of the scientific bases ofFreudian theory and challenges these bases, especially after the evidence forgenetic determinants of personality had been well-established. It presentsFreud’s credits and debits. The chapter ends with a discussion of Freud’s theoryas a religion.Freud’s central theory revolves around the idea that early childhood experiencesand practices (especially those related to the mother) are very crucial indetermining the adult personality later. According to Freud, the core of thoseexperiences is that of sexual development. In addition to his interest in sex,Freud was interested in fame, occultism, and cocaine. Nevertheless, in thebeginning of the twentieth century most Americans were introduced to Freudas an apostle of sexual freedom (p. 13). The author contests that this achievementis a major asset of Freud‘s effect on American life (p. 257).Journalists, social reformers, physicians, and anthropologists contributed tothe popularization of Freud‘s ideas. Some of the well-known names areAbraham Brill, the first psychoanalyst in New York; Max Easman, editor ofthe Masses; Walter Lippman, a famous political analyst; Mable Dodge, a wellknownbusinesswoman; and Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict, the renownedanthropologists ...

Résumé :
To reduce the likelihood that psychology will develop in a deeply flawed manner, the present article seeks to provide an introduction to Freud’s conception of consciousness because, for among other reasons, his general theory is highly influential in our science and culture and among the best understood by clinicians and experimentalists. The theory is complex and all of its major parts have a bearing on one another; indeed, consciousness has a central place in the total conceptual structure — as is argued, in effect, throughout the present article. The discussion focuses mainly on how conscious psychical processes differ from processes of the psychical apparatus that do not instantiate the Freudian attribute of consciousness. This intrinsic attribute that belongs to every conscious psychical process is seen as including, along with qualitative content, an unmediated, witting awareness of the psychical process that is directed upon itself.

This dissertation aims to examine the guilt question within the specific aspect of the obsessional neurosis. For that, we make a journey through Freud s main essays related to obsessional neurosis and, also, the ones regarding the superego; since we begin from the Freudian s hypothesis that the guilt feeling is a result of the tension between the superego and the ego. The particularly cruel tone that the superego assumes in the obsessional neurosis is examined. The defense mechanisms and the formation of the obsessive symptoms are also discussed. Ultimately, we make some considerations regarding Freud s clinical case known as The Rat Man, where we can find precious illustrations of the main mechanisms and characteristics that act in the obsessional neurosis.

Kelen, Jennifer Susan. "The Freudian ego and its relation to the self in American psychoanalytic theory." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/5609.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis finds that "the self" as a concept has been included in psychoanalytic theory but has not been emphasized. The ego is defined in this thesis as a psychoanalytic term. "The self" is defined as a philosophical concept that integrates the subject (an experiential, first person quality), and object (a sense of being an individual as a whole) in mental life. Theoretical writings on the ego are observed to separate the subject and object. In psychoanalysis, the debate on the status of the self in relationship to the ego is found to originate in the 1940s. Five areas of research indicate that while Freud did not stress "the self", he did not omit it. (1) The historical antecedents to psychoanalysis in German scientific materialism illustrate the pressure on psychoanalysis to be identified with scientific and not metaphysical thought. The mind-body relationship in German materialism formulates "the self" as a function of the body, not of the spirit. This is seen to be consistent with Freud's psychic structure in which the ego is a function of the psyche and the psyche a function of the body. (2) The pressure to affiliate with the scientific movement is also apparent in the terminological choices in early and recent English translations (cf. Jones, 1908; Strachey, 1966a). The absence of a personal reference in the translation of das Ich as "the ego" (instead of "the I") is found to detract from Freud's intention. However, when the English translation is reviewed in the context of its evolution, it was found that many decisions were the result of historical-political and cultural considerations. Latin and Greek terminology were required to ensure the survival of psychoanalytic thought. (3) A review of the conceptual development of the ego supports the assumption that Freud included a central aspect within the psyche. Physiological/structural and psychological descriptors are seen to be combined. The ambiguity in Freud's presentation of the ego is suggested to be the result of integrating these descriptors and due to Freud's focus on pathological, not normal, ego functioning. Freud's continued interest in splitting of the ego (not integration) is seen to be consistent with nineteenth century psychiatry. (4) It is also observed that the emphasis in Freudian theory is on the analysis of the psyche. Psychological synthesis was seen to follow automatically the removal of psychological obstacles. This underlying premise indicates that Freud did not ignore a central aspect within the psyche. (5) The foundation of "the self" in American psychoanalytic theory is traced to the reformulation of the ego. Modifications to the ego began with the introduction of "self-representations" (Hartmann, 1950) and led to the presentation of "the self" as a structure comparable to the id, ego and superego (Kohut, 1978; Kernberg, 1982). The basis of these changes originated in discussions of narcissism. Alterations in psychoanalytic theory are suggested to be an attempt to integrate the objective and subjective functions of "the self" within the ego. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

This dissertation investigates the scope of the psychoanalytic approach to the new symptoms which does not obey the logic of repression, but are marked by manifestations of impulsivity among which stand out the passages to the act. We also used the theoretical contributions of Lacan, who affiliated in psychoanalysis the term passage to the act that originated in psychiatry, to demarcate a nuance in the field of acting out, and so, to reset the two concepts.
Em suma, o primeiro estudo visa pensar a origem e a entrada do narcisismo no pensamento freudiano; o segundo, o narcisismo na metapsicologia; e o terceiro, o narcisismo enquanto fenômeno social<br>We aim to contribute to the analysis of the concept of narcissism in the Freudian thought from three studies: (1) An examination of the first elaborations on narcissism, divided into two stages: (i) the origin of the term within the first descriptions and theories of narcissism, (ii) its entry into the Freudian theory. The central idea is, through a diachronic view, to track the appropriation and highlight the changes that Freud makes into this concept to adopt it in his metapsychology. For this, we will at first study how the first theorists of narcissism - Alfred Binet, Havelock Ellis, Paul Näcke and Richard von Krafft-Ebing - conceived this notion, and then think about the Freudian appropriation on three sources: in the correspondence with Jung, in the record of the Minutes of the Psychoanalytic Society of Vienna and in the Freudian texts from 1910 to 1913. (2) A study of the Freudian text On Narcissism: an introduction of 1914 - the central text for narcissism - taking into account three aspects: (i) the internal logic of the text, (ii) the changes that the introduction of narcissism brings to the Freudian theory, (iii) some consequences of this concept inside the Freudian thought. (3) An analysis of the concept of narcissism of minor differences - unfolding one of the several developments that the narcissism concept has had since 1914; it is a synchronic analysis that aims to collate and relate three moments of this notion: such as it first appears in The Taboo of Virginity of 1918, the way it is retaken in Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego of 1921, and its final version in Civilization and Its Discontents of 1930. In short, the first study aims to consider the origin and the entry of narcissism in the Freudian thought; the second is related to the narcissism in metapsychology; and the third, narcissism as a social phenomenon

In The Passion According to GH, Clarice Lispector novel, published in 1964, to verify how is the disintegration mimetic narrative, occurs an everyday and trite situation - a woman, identified only as G. H, kill a cockroach - but this fact in the story takes many dimensions and results an existential quest of character. This quest unleash changes in the psychology of GH, which are reviewed in the study, in the light of Freudian theory, especially the theory of drive, the element "strange" and the pleasure principle. We also verify the process of abjection, Kristeva, and their correspondence in the narrative. The analysis is done by inserting the reading in an attempt to show as getting rid of the referential illusion and the failure of the narrative, which finds its limits in silence.<br>Em A paixão segundo G. H., romance de Clarice Lispector, publicado em 1964, no qual se busca verificar como se dá a desintegração mimética na narrativa, ocorre uma situação cotidiana e banal uma mulher, identificada apenas como G. H, mata uma barata , mas esse fato adquire muitas dimensões na narração e origina uma busca existencial da personagem.

Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa e à Inovação Tecnológica do Estado de Sergipe - FAPITEC/SE<br>The main goal of this paper is to discuss some relations that may be established between the subject of sexuality and culture through Freud’s work, more especifically the so called “first topic” period of his work, which withholds the texts that were published by Freud before the turn of events in the 1920’s. First of all, we will show how the theme of sexuality was since the beggining put in question by freudian psychanalitical theory regarding the clinic – namely, with the emergency, at Freud’s time, of a large number of neurosis cases. In this discussion we will approach the clinic distinction suggested by Freud between psiconeurosis and actual neuroses, delimiting the specificities of this cases and the differences in handling the sexual excitation in both. Afterwards, we will make a collection of the development of a Freudian conception of symptom, through the introductory conferences pronounced by Freud about this subject. In the next chapter, we will discuss the making of a freudian conception of sexuality, more especifically, on how this conception distinguished a lot of that shared by the medical knowledge back then, on how Freud’s fisicalist orientation had an effect on him and how the development of the concept of narcissism took this conception to the next step. In our third chapter, our goal is to narrow the links between the themes of sexuality and culture, through the reading of some sociological Freudian texts. With this end in sight, we will make a rigorous exam of two important texts from Freud’s work, Civilized Sexual Morality and Totem e tabu, so that we can point out the connections between the clinic and the culture through the strife among instinctual demands and the other, represented by the social values. Up next, we will do some observations about sublimation as a valuable instinctual end to the culture, through an exam of the construction of this concept in Freud and by taking the figure of the artist as a reference. In the end, we will make some considerations about the results of our work, emphasizing how we cannot think satisfactorily the clinical setting without a broad knowledge of the factors that condition a particular social estructure.<br>O principal objetivo deste trabalho é discutir algumas relações que podem ser estabelecidas entre o tema da sexualidade e cultura a partir da obra de Freud, mais especificamente o período dessa obra que se convencionou chamar de “primeira tópica”, e que abrange os textos publicados por Freud antes da virada teórica dos anos 1920.

Thesis advisor: Jeffrey Bloechl<br>This project takes up the old question of the nature of truth by seeking to say, at one stroke, both what enables truth and falsity and what lets them matter to us so centrally. Somehow, we as human beings are fundamentally connected to a world in which the truth of statements and the genuineness of things can matter to us deeply and coherently. And yet, I try to show, this coherent unity between being and thinking can also be radically (if not always permanently) broken in the experience of psychosis. I argue that the source of that vulnerable unity must be a contingent event in which I find myself disposed trustingly toward the world, and therein find the world disclosed as trustworthy. Such primitive trust is phenomenally related to trusting a person, and Freudian psychoanalysis shows us that it develops psychologically through relation to a person. As what fundamentally structures self and world, however, this kind of attunement transcends psychology. Our very access to the being of things, i.e., to their compelling importance and organized significance, depends upon it. Thus, I support Martin Heidegger's account of the essence of truth as what first makes accessible the comparisons (between word and thing, for example) on which more traditional theories of truth are based. Yet I also confront Heidegger's phenomenological version of trust by highlighting what is at stake ontologically in our interpersonal psychic development, which psychoanalysis reveals to take place by way of seduction. Heidegger assumes that being must show itself, even if in a concealed way, and thus always takes absence as withdrawal or absencing, rather than as a radical break. By attending to the meaningful phenomena of psychosis, I defend the thesis that our relation to the world is instead opened up and sustained by a fundamental affective attunement (trust) that can dramatically fail. In other words, I try to show that we are exposed to a more radical kind of concealment than Heidegger's thinking of truth seems able to do justice to, a failure of being that can thoroughly overwhelm us<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Résumé :
The article analyzes the problems of methodological construction of the ontological and ontic framework of the phenomenon of existential terrorism in the context of possible changes in the subordination and institutional potential of modern Russian society. The agenda includes the state of affairs in the modern educational environment in the aspect of its dynamic transformation towards the digitalization of the educational process and the associated possible loss on the part of teachers and students of their own individuality. This question is explicated in the paradigmatic orientation of the Marxist approach in relation to the loss of a person's true self and in the paradigmatic orientation of the neo-Freudian approach in relation to the ability of a person to carry out collective cooperation in the professional sphere. Terminologically, the article is made possible in the conditions of dialectical identifications of Platonism and Hegelianism, while the question of the correlation of the level of existential freedom, the ontic orientation of fear and the extroversion of existential terrorization is explicated in the theoretical generalizations of J. Bataille, J. Deleuze and J. Baudrillard.

Résumé :
"In psychological science, the concept of contemplation is not included in the most important categories of psychology, such as activity, consciousness, personality. The dictionary meanings of the term “contemplation” are ambiguous. In psychology, in addition to the categorical analysis of contemplation (S.L. Rubinstein) and its attribution to fundamental concepts (A.V. Brushlinsky), there are also interpretations of contemplation, which are synonymous to intuition (A. Bergson) and meditation (V.F. Petrenko, Han F. De Wit), insight (preconceptual thinking - T.K. Rulina), mystical states (W. James, P.S. Gurevich). Contemplation, unlike intuition, meditation and insight, does not have a previous reportable history. In our studies, contemplation is considered as an unconscious mental phenomenon that exists in the forms of a process, state, and also the properties of an individual (contemplative personality). Not coinciding with the processes of attention, memory, perception, thinking, etc., contemplation, however, is activated on their basis. The difference lies in the uncontrollability of this process, since its contents are not presented to consciousness. Therefore, contemplation is also different from dreams, experiences, intentions and other internally substantive mental phenomena. Despite the fact that consciousness does not have access to the content of contemplation (access-consciousness), the process itself is realized by man. In this we see the difference between contemplation as unconscious activity and Freudian understanding of the unconscious. Other differences are: involuntary entry and random exit from the state of contemplation; emotional equipotentiality of contemplation, i.e. the invariability of the emotional background of contemplation from the beginning to the exit from it. In ontogenesis, contemplation is most clearly represented in infancy, in youth, and in old age, as well as during periods of age and other life crises. Reminiscences of students record the age range from 11 to 17 years as the most saturated with contemplation; least at the age of 6-8 years (L.S. Akopian). Contemplation as an unconscious activity periodically replaces purposeful activity, contributing to the maturation, correction, transformation of the person’s life meanings in their micro-, meso- and macro-macro dimensions. Contemplation also fulfills the function of partially liberating oneself from an excess of affairs, concerns, plans, aspirations, and other forms of conscious activity. The development of practice-oriented forms of actualization of contemplation will expand the range of psychotherapeutic methods."
