This is a thesis on D-level. In a previous course, at our program Computer Science, we came up with an idea of how to improve/complement training for new employees who are situated in a stressful workplace at companies who are in a constant need of rehiring. We developed this concept and came up with an idea for a simulator that could train staff as well as relieve stress and tension for new employees. The idea matured and became a Serious Game simulator based on a dual-wield Wii-controlled PC-based simulator with Bluetooth support. The aim of this thesis is to create a developer’s guide on the basis of a simulator with the use of Wii remotes as external input devices. In this guide we will cover how the Nintendo Wii Remote works, how to create simple 3D-models in Blender and also how this can be implemented in Microsoft XNA. With this guide as a base we will also show how we developed a prototype using a design concept developed through the research of our coworkers Christopher Saarinen & Evin Antoniadis. This thesis has resulted in both a guide and a working prototype that implement the basic elements of our coworkers’ design concept.

Texte intégralThis dissertation consists of an introductory chapter with an extended literature review, three chapters on individual and independent research topics, and an appendix. Chapter 2 uses a two-country model with a central bank maximizing union-wide welfare and two fiscal authorities minimizing comparable, but slightly different country-wide losses. The rivalry between the three authorities is analyzed in seven static games. Comparing a homogeneous with a heterogeneous monetary union, welfare losses relative to the social optimum are found to be significantly larger in a heterogeneous union. The best-performing scenarios are cooperation between all authorities and monetary leadership. The goal of Chapter 3 is to investigate whether or not it is possible to explain the house price to GDP ratio and the house price to stock price ratio as being generally constant, deviating from its respective mean only because of shocks to productivity? Building a two-sector RBC model for residential and non-residential capital, it is shown that an anticipated future shock to productivity growth in the non-residential sector leads to an immediate large increase in house prices relative to GDP. In Chapter 4, it is asked whether a typical New Keynesian Open Economy Model is able to explain "Six Major Puzzles in International Macroeconomics". After translating the six puzzles into moment conditions for the model, I estimate five parameters to fit the moment conditions implied by the data. Given the simplicity of the model, its fit is surprisingly good: among other things, the home bias puzzles can easily be replicated, the exchange rate volatility is formidably increased and the exchange rate correlation pattern is relatively close to realistic values. Trade costs are one important ingredient for this finding.

This study investigates the meaning construction processes in narratives based on theoretical assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics (CL), which supports the principle that the relationship between language and the world is mediated by cognition. It discusses, therefore, the idea that language is formed on the interaction between the human biological apparatus and cultural experience, basic components in the process of construction of meaning, as studied by Lakoff and Johnson (1999); Johnson (2007), and Damasio (2011). We argue specifically that human communicative interaction arises from the cognitive ability to construct narratives (TURNER, 1996, 2006; LAKOFF, 2008; LAKOFF and NARAYANAN, 2010) and to activate speech frames. These frames arise from the match between conceptual domains, structured by abstract descriptive schemes of space and movement (scheme-I and X-schemes) and communicative frames (dimensions of frames). This work also proposes a constructional analysis model of narrative and discourse, based on the description of the cognitive mechanisms that participate in the process of meaning construction in fabulous narratives. The research is qualitative and the method employed is introspective, which is guided by the views of the researcher (TALMY, 2005), but anchored in the theoretical premises of CL and compared to data collected in corpora. The corpora, in turn, consisted of a set of fables drawn from the works of Aesop (2006), Phaedrus (2001), La Fontaine ([2008?]), Monteiro Lobato (2008) and Sergio Caparrelli, and Marcia Schmaltz (2012). The analyses of these fables pointed to the centrality of frames (FILLMORE, 1977) and to the process of mental simulation (BARSALOU, 1999) in the meaning construction process in narratives. They also suggest that the social cognitive role of speech in social acculturation process (VAN DIJK, 2012) is basically structured in the combination of descriptive schemes and by the confrontation of discursive frames. Therefore, we consider, in this work, that storytelling is one of the most important cognitive mechanisms in the construction process and in the projection of real or fictitious experiences; and that the action of storytelling seems to lead us, as cognitive beings, to simulate attitudes, causes, effects and intentions of the ones involved in the story. We believe that this work can contribute to cognitive studies about the comprehension of texts, speeches and embodied grammar.

Texte intégralThe aim of the present research is to study the role of human factor in a salient driving ability for road accident prevention, that is reaction time to danger. Reaction times (RTs) have been investigated since the origin of experimental Psychology, however when applied to driving, the values became obsolete due to modern driving conditions and interaction with advance driving automatic systems and devices. The influence of expectation, urgency, risk perception, cognitive load and driving conditions on the process that determine RTs have been steadily proven in literature. The present research aims to tackle the influence of these factors on RTs while driving. In particular data measured in real-life driving are used to a) study the influence of expectation on attention, emotions and decision making process, and b) assess the influence of virtual settings with different levels of realism, on the psychological process that determine RTs. A specific task that manipulate driver’s expectations was created to assess the influence of attention and decision making process in the different context on RTs. Results show significant differences in the RTs phases, for different situation. Driving simulators with different levels of realism proved to not have absolute validity, but rather relative on the meanings and learning process in detecting danger and deciding what response foster; giving us interesting information for drivers education, road safety and accident reconstruction.
