Cet article lève le voile sur les différentes manières dont, historiquement, le territoire a été perçu, conçu et vécu à travers l’expérience et l’essor de la mobilité. À partir des années 1920, l’automobilité a occupé un rôle central dans la réflexion des acteurs du tourisme et dans la création des territoires touristiques. En comparant l’expérience de deux provinces, le Québec et l’Ontario, par le biais d’une analyse iconographique et discursive des guides touristiques et des récits de voyage, ce texte montre en quoi deux territoires, ayant des caractéristiques biogéophysiques semblables, développent des représentations touristiques différentes en fonction de facteurs culturels.

À la fin du XIXe siècle, l’excursion hebdomadaire et le tourisme en train, à bicyclette, en automobile ou en canot, s’organisent vers l’est, le long de la Marne. Le Touring Club de France et le Canoë Club de France, deux sociétés parisiennes d’encouragement du tourisme, participent à la construction de la Route des Loisirs sur environ 50 km, entre Paris et Meaux. Ces deux sociétés aménagent le territoire et développent des infrastructures pour accueillir des touristes. Le chemin de fer, la route, l’hébergement et les loisirs semblent être les points importants autour desquels se structure une destination touristique. Trois secteurs émergent : le secteur Joinville – Nogent – Le Perreux, la ville de Lagny-sur-Marne et la ville de Meaux. Les guides touristiques et de voyage valorisent ces destinations de loisir.

AbstractReturning from Algerian captivity in 1580 — when Gregory XIII’s calendar reform was implemented in Spain — Miguel de Cervantes had only two years to adjust from Islamic to Christian time. The fragility and instability of time hence became a central motif for Cervantes. In part 2 ofDon Quixote, the time-altering anxieties of the Gregorian calendar appear in glaring gaps in time, in the shifting chronology of the text, and in images that recall the sundial as reflective of time and of the brevity of human life. Cervantes uses Ovidian feasts to further destabilize the quixotic chronology, pointing to the sacred, political, and personal uses (and abuses) of time. Indeed, Sancho Panza takes advantage of chronological conundrums and turns to Ovid’sFastiin order to mislead his master through a mock-Floralia and a voyage to the Pleiades. For beneath the cloak of simplicity Sancho guides the knight along unexpected paths, thieving from Ovid in order to speak with Mercury’s eloquence and to craft artful designs that rival Botticelli’sPrimavera.

Abstract1997 was an important year for Russia's Northern Sea Route (NSR) in terms of foreign interest. The first full transits of the NSR by western merchant ships were made. The International Northern Sea Route Programme (INSROP) continued into phase 2 of its research projects, and planning proceeded for a European Union-sponsored demonstration voyage to the Ob' River. The nuclear icebreaker Arktika returned to Arctic operations, while two icebreakers were removed from polar service. Information about the NSR became more widely available with the distribution of an English translation of a navigation guide. Winter operations continued in the Kara Sea, albeit reduced, and a limited number of summer voyages to Russian Arctic ports originated from the Pacific rim. RADARS AT synthetic aperture radar images of sea ice along the NSR were used for the first time during several demonstration voyages.

Le gouvernement et les évêques en Pologne du Congrès rappelaient le clergé à porter l’habit proprement ecclésiastique. Les prêtres, d’une part les guides spirituels, d ’autre part en partie les fonctionnaires d’état, devaient aussi par leur habit inspirer le respect aux gens, et en ce qui concerne la spiritualité sacerdotale, les prêtres par cela s’assuraient sur leur vocation. Ceux qui sont entrés au séminaire, des premiers mois mettaient l’habit différent. On distinguait l’habit liturgique et celui qui était utilisé a la maison et en voyage. La premier était la soutane noire, longue, boutonnée dans le sens de la longueur, avec le collet au cou. Le prêtre habillé en soutane disait la messe, administrait des sacraments et exercait fonctions officielles. Outre cela, les prêtres mettaient les redingotes. Ils portaient le chapeau ou la casquette - moins officielement - le calot. Si les prêtres s’écartaient du principe en ce qui concerne l’habit, le gouvernement et les évêques faisaient des remontrances. Cela arrivait plus souvent dans la première moitié du XIX siècle. Les religieux qui exercaient leurs fonctions dans les paroisses portaient l’habit selon leurs régles, mais après la sécularisation, ils mettaient la soutane ou la redingote. Au début du XX siècle les redingotes ont disparu, „L’habit court” - popularisé des dernières années est lié, pour ainsi dire, a la redingote. Les soutanes étaient d’une façon différente, qu’aujourd’hui (celles d’aujourd’hui sont de façon italiennes). On voit cela en vieilles photos. Autrefois l’Eglise attachait l’importance plus grande a l’habit du clergé comme du signe de différent état sociale.

Abstract The Sámi noaidi in Finland, often referred to as a shaman, has been studied primarily in a historical context and primarily within the framework of events that took place between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the priests in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, during the upheaval caused by colonialism, converted the Sámi to Christianity. Of this time period, a great deal has been written about the noaidi and his drum and the many traditional practices that had both a physical and spiritual dimension to them. However, there is little information about the items that decorated the noaidi's costume or the physical objects (e.g., amulets or charms in the forms of animals) that were used ritualistically as spiritual helpers, guides, and protectors of the noaidi when he undertook his out-of-body voyage from the physical world into the world of the spirits. The discovery of a grave in the Kuusamo municipality of northern Finland in 1970, and the archaeological investigation which followed, uncovered a number of grave artifacts amongst the noaidi's remains: a metal bird, an axe head, metal rings, a knife blade, a belt buckle, and a bone hammer, made from a reindeer antler, which was used for playing a magical drum. Another significant feature, which may provide a new understanding of Sámi burial customs, was the positioning of the body as it was found in its resting place. I will demonstrate the significance of the objects found beside the noaidi, analyzing a number of possibilities as to why they were placed with him to accompany him on his journey to the spirit world.

Desde finales del siglo XIX, tanto los relatos de viajes como las clásicas guías turísticas en papel conceden un lugar privilegiado al encuentro con el Otro, es decir, a la alteridad / interculturalidad; unos y otras encuentran en la intertextualidad una de sus principales características. Si la Revolución Industrial supuso nuevas maneras de viajar y un antes y un después en la relación del hombre con el tiempo y el espacio, esta segunda revolución marcada por las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación, incide también de manera rotunda en el sector turístico. Ambas revoluciones han supuesto un antes y un después en la concepción de las Guías, que en poco tiempo han pasado de estar en papel a convertirse en complejas (y a la vez simples) aplicaciones para Smartphone.
El presente trabajo pretende analizar la cita literaria inserta en lo que denominaremos Guías QR. Más concretamente veremos qué textos de qué escritores franceses (Camus o Bernanos entre otros) han sido seleccionados para su inclusión en WOW Mallorca –aplicación puesta en marcha en 2016 por el Consell de Mallorca con la pretensión de dar a conocer el patrimonio literario de la isla– así como la pertinencia o no de los fragmentos elegidos. En lo que respecta a la interculturalidad / alteridad, ¿qué imagen del otro y de uno mismo ofrecen unas citas que, no lo olvidemos, han sido previamente seleccionadas? ¿Hasta qué punto contribuyen a una nueva relación del hombre con el espacio? ¿Qué relaciones interculturales ayudan a tejer?
Por otro lado, no hay que olvidar que en el universo de las guías digitales, la cita literaria “circula” a capricho del viajero y está sujeta a continuos y rápidos cambios lo que, entre otros, implica un cambio del soporte material. De las premisas señaladas, se desprenden gran cantidad de preguntas que intentaremos responder, partiendo del análisis de la aplicación WoW Mallorca. Diversos estudios sobre la interculturalidad y la intertextualidad, así como sobre las affordances discursivas, estarán en la base de este trabajo. Since the end of the 19th century, both travelogues and the classic hard copies of both travelogues and the classic tourist guidebooks have given pride of place to an encounter with the Other, that is, to alterity/interculturality. However, both groups find one of their main characteristics lies in intertextuality. If the Industrial Revolution signified new ways of traveling and a before and after in man’s relationship with time and space, this second revolution, marked by information technologies, has also had a resounding impact on the tourism industry. Both revolutions have represented a before and after in the conception of Guidebooks, which from being general, have gone on to become, on many occasions, thematic; from hard copies to becoming complex Smartphone applications. The present study aims to analyse literary citation inserted in what we shall call QR Guidebooks focused on cultural tourism, specifically literary tourism. More precisely, we will see which texts, from which French writers have been chosen to be part of the application “WoW Mallorca Literaria”, launched in 2016 by the Consell Insular de Mallorca with the aim of making known the literary heritage of the island. The digital guidebook signifies a break with the linearity and sequentiality of a text that the traveller composes and decomposes at will , which affects the ultimate sense thereof. In the same way, literary citation ‘circulates’ at the traveller’s whim and is subject to the continuous and rapid changes of the digital universe, which, among other things, entails a change in the material medium. Bearers in themselves of meaning, we wonder whether the different media modify the ultimate meaning of the quote. As far as alterity is concerned, what image of the other and of oneself are offered by quotes which, let us not forget, have been selected in advance? To what extent do they contribute to a new relationship between man and space? Are we in the field of culture, of interculturality, on the border between the two concepts? Several studies on citation, as well as on discursive affordances, will form the basis of this work. À partir du XIXe siècle, aussi bien les récits de voyage que les classiques guides touristiques papier dédient une place privilégiée à la rencontre avec l’Autre, c’est-à-dire à l’altérité / l’interculturalité. Par ailleurs, une de leurs principales caractéristiques communes réside dans l’intertextualité. Si la révolution industrielle a marqué un tournant dans la façon de voyager et a bouleversé la relation de l’homme avec le temps et l’espace, cette deuxième révolution marquée par les technologies de l’information et de la communication a une incidence évidente sur le secteur touristique. Ces révolutions ont toutes deux marqué un avant et un après en ce qui concerne la conception des guides, lesquels sont très souvent passés du format papier à des applications complexes (et simples à la fois) pour smartphones.
Le présent travail prétend analyser la citation littéraire insérée dans ce que nous appellerons les Guides QR. Plus précisément nous verrons quels textes, de quels écrivains français (Camus et Bernanos parmi d’autres) ont été choisis pour faire partie de l’application WoW Mallorca –lancée en 2016 par le Consell de Mallorca avec la prétention de faire connaître le patrimoine littéraire de l’île, ainsi que la pertinence des fragments retenus. Concernant l’altérité / interculturalité, quelle image de l’autre et de soi-même des citations qui, ne l’oublions pas, ont été préalablement sélectionnées, offrent-elles? À quel point contribuent-elles à une relation nouvelle de l’homme avec l’espace insulaire?
En outre, il ne faut pas oublier que dans les guides digitales, la citation littéraire “circule” au gré du voyageur et fait l’objet de changements d’univers numérique continuels et rapides, ce qui implique, entre autres, un changement de support matériel. Porteurs de sens en eux-mêmes, nous nous demandons si les différents supports modifient le sens ultime de la citation, ne serait-ce que par l’absence de guillemets ou de connecteurs quels qu’ils soient
Des prémisses évoquées ci-dessus se dégagent de nombreuses questions auxquelles nous essaierons de répondre à partir de l’analyse de WoW Mallorca. Diverses études sur l’interculturalité et l’intertextualité, ainsi que sur les affordances langagières constitueront la base de notre travail.

Louis-Antoine Caraccioli, né en 1719 et mort 1803 à Paris, était un écrivain français, auteur d’ouvrages littéraires, historiques, politiques et théologiques, et auteur d’un guide français de voyage, Le Véritable Mentor, ou l’éducation de la noblesse (1755). Il a également écrit sur l’histoire de la Pologne : Lettres à une illustre morte décédée en Pologne depuis peu de temps (1770), La Pologne telle qu’elle a été, telle qu’elle est, telle qu’elle sera (1775). En Pologne, il fut le gouverneur des enfants du prince Wacław Rzewuski, grand général et premier sénateur du royaume. Le Véritable Mentor était destiné à l’élite de la noblesse. Il comporte des conseils sur la façon de voyager en toute sécurité, quels endroits visiter, quelle compagnie fréquenter. Grâce aux lettres de l’auteur au prince Rzewuski – Caraccioli accompagnait ses fils à travers l’Europe – nous avons pu en apprendre davantage sur les détails du voyage. Nous pouvons confronter les directives contenues dans le livre à la réalité des déplacements à Vienne, Rome et Paris grâce aux lettres et au livre de dépenses conservés aux Archives nationales de Cracovie et à la Bibliothèque nationale de Varsovie. Cet ouvrage offre un excellent exemple de l’influence de la pensée française sur l’éducation de la noblesse en Pologne, mais il est davantage marqué par la tendance du « catholicisme éclairé » que par le courant des philosophes.

Depuis toujours, le genre du récit de voyage littéraire en France se distingue par son carac- tère essentiellement ouvert. Une de ses variantes est le récit de voyage de tendance autobiographique, rapporté par un ’je‘ auteur-narrateur, en même temps protagoniste, et relatant des expériences de voyage prétendument authentiques de l'auteur ou d'autres personnes, en tout cas plus ou moins fictionnalisées. Au centre de cet article se trouve l'analyse du Voyage d'une Française en Suisse et en Franche-Comté depuis la Révolution, publié en 1790 sous forme anonyme et attribué à une certaine Madame de Gauthier, auteure de voyage fermement royaliste. Ce récit sous forme épistolaire monologique montre que ce genre variable est en principe soumis aussi aux événements cruciaux de l'histoire – dans ce cas la première phase de la Révolution française. Ainsi n'est- on pas étonné de voir que, sans sacrifier pour autant sa fonction réelle de guide, ce Voyage se transforme en récit d'un voyage-fuite et quelques mois plus tard d'un voyage-émigration, tout en marquant ainsi le début de toute une série de ’romans d'émigration‘ de la fin du XVIII e siècle. L'action de ce ’roman d'émigré‘ particulier de 1790 est le voyage, raconté par elle-même, d'une protagoniste accompagnée de son groupe, voyage oscillant entre fictionnalité et réalité autobiographique et souvent enrichi des aventures d'autres personnes. Elle ne se limite pas à la reproduction du mouvement des voyageurs et de ce que ceux-ci voient et éprouvent en visitant, d'une station à l'autre, les différents paysages, villes, institutions et particuliers et en apprenant leur histoire, mais il s'agit d'un mouvement dont l'itinéraire lui-même est déterminé par les forces inéluctables de l'histoire.

Following a legacy of four and a half centuries of literature written by foreign travelers landing on Haiti’s shores, Alejo Carpentier’s seminal novel about the Haitian Revolution is predicated upon Carpentier’s voyage to Haiti six years earlier. This article attends to the role of voyage in Carpentier’s The Kingdom of This World, revealing the ways in which Carpentier’s storytelling and rendering of Haiti in both the novel and its prologue, and his accompanying theory of the marvelous real, adhere to Eurocentric conceptions of time that reinscribe this neocolonial space as anachronistic space. Because Carpentier can only perceive Haiti in the past, he replicates the role of the imperial travel writer in fashioning metropolitan conceptions of colonial spaces and reproduces the imbalance of power between visitor/visited. This perspective reinforces a dominant Euro-American image of Haiti as a strange and magical object of consumption and fails to imagine it as an independent, post-revolution state.

AbstractThe study assessed shippers and ship owners’ ship and charter party type choices in the wet and dry bulk ship broking and chartering market as guide for performance improvement for African and Nigerian ship brokers. It aims to determine if significant differences exists between shippers ship type choices among Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC), Handymax, Supramax and capsize vessels in the wet and dry bulk market as well shippers and ship owners charter party type choice between voyage charter and time charter for the various ship types. The study adopted a survey method in which the Baltic International Maritime Council (BIMCO) was surveyed and 5 year data on ship types and charter party type choices of shippers and ship owners was obtained. The statistical tools of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and independent sample t-test were used to compare the ship type choices and charter party type choices of shippers and ship owners. The result indicates that shippers’ in the wet and dry bulk cargo market show greater preference for Supramax vessel type. The aggregate number of vessels chartered over the period covered in the study is 41,684 vessels out of which 22,593 representing about 54.2% are Supramax. This was seconded by VLCC which recorded 8,829 or 21.2% charters. Capsize and Handymax vessel types had 6211 and 4069 charters respectively which represent 14.9% and 9.77% each. Shippers and ship owners also show greater preference for voyage charter party type than time charter party for all types of vessels. It was recommended that ship brokers should place greater priority on trading in Supramax ship types and voyage charter party type as the demand trend for this ship type is likely to remain higher over time; followed by VLCC; while more shippers and ship owners are likely continue to show preference for voyage charter than time charter.

The first few frames of the Belgian comic-strip artist Raymond Macherot's work “Les Croquillards” (1957) provide a shorthand for some of the issues that concern environmentally oriented criticism, one of the most recent fields of research to have emerged from the rapidly diversifying matrix of literary and cultural studies in the 1990s. A heron is prompted to a lyrical reflection on the change of seasons by a leaf that gently floats down to the surface of his pond (see the next p.): “Ah! the poetry of autumn … dying leaves, wind, departing birds…” This last thought jolts him back to reality: “But—I'm a migratory bird myself! … Good grief! What've I been thinking?” And off he takes on his voyage south, only to be hailed by the protagonists, the field rats Chlorophylle and Minimum (the latter under the spell of a bad cold), who hitch a ride to Africa with him. “Are you traveling on business?” he asks his newfound passengers. “No, for our health,” they answer.

<abstract> <p>Limiting carbon dioxide emissions is one of the main concerns of green shipping. As an important carbon intensity indicator, the Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI) represents the energy efficiency level of each ship and can be used to guide the operations of ship fleets for liner companies. Few studies have investigated an integrated optimization problem of fleet deployment, voyage planning and speed optimization with consideration of the influences of sailing speed, displacement and voyage option on fuel consumption. To fill this research gap, this study formulates a nonlinear mixed-integer programming model capturing all these elements and subsequently proposes a tailored exact algorithm for this problem. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The largest numerical experiment, with 7 ship routes and 32 legs, can be solved to optimality in four minutes. Moreover, managerial insights are obtained according to sensitivity analyses with crucial parameters, including the weighting factor, unit price of fuel, Suez Canal toll fee per ship, weekly fixed operating cost and cargo load in each leg.</p> </abstract>

In our days of Artificial Intelligence, smartphones and all Internet of Things that provide us with myriads of connected objects at a very early age, education has to be transformed to integrate the searching power these means of communications, in fact first of all means of exploration-incorporation, provide every single individual in our society. They have become the main means of development for masseducation in a knowledge society. I will at first start from the mental architecture of a learner and move to the fundamental transference phenomena that command the motivation of a learner and a selflearner has to live on his own motivation. Then I will move to the role and responsibility of the Conceptor-Designer of a batch of selflearning work based on the choice expressed by the Self-Learner, from the resources provided or suggested by the batch to the tasks to be fulfilled. Everything is hegemonies by the type of needs and activities the learner will have to face and assume in his future professional field. The Self-Learner will have to target what is in his “zone of proximal development” to be most effective. That will lead us to the triadic guided self-learning situation centered on the Self-Learner but with the guidance from the Conceptor-Designer on one side and the real professional world represented by the Coach-Counterpart-Partner- Doppelganger that accompanies the Self-learner in his voyage on the other side. The Internet, in its present development, is the real toolbox the Self-Learner has at the tip of his fingers constantly. That will lead us to the Boolean logic of the Internet that has to be understood and dominated by the Self-Learner, at times against the interests of the search-engine the Self-Learner uses. I will end with one particular batch – called a triad – of self-learning work proposed in Fall 2018 to the CEO of a medical startup, which will bring the type of contract that can be signed by the company and the Conceptor-Designer who only sells Intellectual Property to the company. The South Korean government encourages the Korean diaspora members to return to South Korea for personal and career developments. Many Korean-Chinese students decided to come back to their homeland for education and further career pathways. However, many Korean-Chinese face challenges and difficulties in South Korean schools and communities due to social and cultural differences. This study aims to understand the challenges of Korean-Chinese university students. Two research questions guided this study, including 1) how would Korean-Chinese university students describe their experiences based on the Sociocultural and Psychological Racism perspective during their university voyage in South Korea and 2) do Korean-Chinese university students face any particular difficulties and challenges due to their Korean-Chinese status based on the Sociocultural and Psychological Racism perspective during their university voyage in South Korea. Interview sessions and focus group activities were employed to collect data from 30 participants across the Korean peninsula. The results indicated that cultural characteristics, place of origin, and spoken languages are the three challenges for all Korean-Chinese participants. The results of this study filled the gaps in returning Korean students’ experiences, challenges and difficulties. Also, government leaders may reform and polish the current policies in order to help other Korean diaspora in the South Korean communities.

Automation of handling systems in the container terminals of maritime ports has become one of the most important changes that happened in maritime transport since the first voyage of a container vessel in 1956. Nowadays, new automated terminals are being built in the world. Most of them are located in Europe, then in North America and the Far East. Automated guided vehicles, automated straddle carriers or automated stacking cranes have replaced handling devices that were manipulated and were controlled by port workers in the container terminals. The basic goal of the paper is to focus on the advantages of this progressive system that is based on the increase of the output of the container terminals, the reduction of downtimes or accidents during handling of containers.

Fuel transition can decarbonize shipping and help meet IMO 2050 goals. In this paper, HFO with CCS, LNG with CCS, bio-methanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, ammonia, and electricity were studied using empirical ship design models from a fleet-level perspective and at the Tank-To-Wake level, to assist operators, technology developers, and policy makers. The cargo attainment rate CAR (i.e., cargo that must be displaced due to the low-C propulsion system), the ES (i.e., TTW energy needed per ton*n.m.), the CS (economic cost per ton*n.m.), and the carbon intensity index CII (gCO2 per ton*n.m.) were calculated so that the potential of the various alternatives can be compared quantitatively as a function of different criteria. The sensitivity of CAR towards ship type, fuel type, cargo type, and voyage distance were investigated. All ship types had similar CAR estimates, which implies that considerations concerning fuel transition apply equally to all ships (cargo, containership, tankers). Cargo type was the most sensitive factor that made a ship either weight or volume critical, indirectly impacting on the CAR of different fuels; for example, a hydrogen ship is weight-critical and has 2.3% higher CAR than the reference HFO ship at 20,000 nm. Voyage distance and fuel type could result in up to 48.51% and 11.75% of CAR reduction. In addition to CAR, the ES, CS, and CII for a typical mission were calculated and it was found that HFO and LNG with CCS gave about 20% higher ES and CS than HFO, and biodiesel had twice the cost, while ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen had 3–4 times the CS of HFO and electricity about 20 times, suggesting that decarbonisation of the world’s fleet will come at a large cost. As an example of including all factors in an effort to create a normalized scoring system, an equal weight was allocated to each index (CAR, ES, CS, and CII). Biodiesel achieved the highest score (80%) and was identified as the alternative with the highest potential for a deep-seagoing containership, followed by ammonia, hydrogen, bio-methanol, and CCS. Electricity has the lowest normalized score of 33%. A total of 100% CAR is achievable by all alternative fuels, but with compromises in voyage distance or with refuelling. For example, a battery containership carrying an equal amount of cargo as an HFO-fuelled containership can only complete 13% of the voyage distance or needs refuelling seven times to complete 10,000 n.m. The results can guide decarbonization strategies at the fleet level and can help optimise emissions as a function of specific missions.

The recent ingression of numerous scientific research sensor networks promises the potential to improve scientific knowledge and influence many societal issues including education. Until the availability of the Internet in classrooms, students used limited and outdated data sets to learn about dynamic earth systems. Internet access creates an important opportunity for students to obtain real-time data, providing them with engaging and up-to-date information. It is essential for research scientists to consider audiences beyond their own research community and think about how and where their data can be used for educational purposes, and to create engaging, clear, concise displays of data in an effort to reach non-scientific audiences. Scientific real-time data sources displayed in a "friendly" manner have been used in classrooms for several years resulting in the discovery of several significant educational advantages including: the infusion of inquiry-based learning, fostering problem solving skills, addressing several learning styles, and student relevance. As an example of ways in which scientific real-time data can be adapted for use in the classroom, this paper describes The Gulf Stream Voyage which is an Internet-based multidisciplinary project that utilizes both real-time data and primary source materials to help guide students to discover the science and history of the Gulf Stream.

A key issue in the field of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) is the accurate localization of scalp positions that correspond to targeted cortical areas. The current gold standard is to combine structural and functional brain imaging with a commercially available “neuronavigation” system. However, neuronavigation systems are not commonplace outside of specialized research environments. Here we describe a technique that allows for the use of participant-specific functional and structural MRI data to guide NIBS without a neuronavigation system. Surface mesh representations of the head were generated using Brain Voyager and vectors linking key anatomical landmarks were drawn on the mesh. Our technique was then used to calculate the precise distances on the scalp corresponding to these vectors. These calculations were verified using actual measurements of the head and the technique was used to identify a scalp position corresponding to a brain area localized using functional MRI.

AbstractAn analysis of Sir Humphrey Gilbert’s 1583 expedition to North America, which was England’s first attempt at colonization beyond Britain, shows that the nation’s earliest expansionists perceived the significance of maps in supporting colonization. Gilbert recruited several specialists, including John Dee and Richard Hakluyt, who expended considerable time and resources conducting research for their maps and drawing up plans to survey the colony. A thorough examination of Gilbert’s sea chart and terrestrial maps clarifies how his circle used them to promote the expedition, to guide it to North America, and to assert their control over the territory. Scholars often depict early modern English colonizers as having little interest in cartographic materials, but Gilbert and his supporters proved that maps served a number of vital functions in preparing and executing a colonizing expedition.

Man’s life has always been looked upon as a journey. Like any other journey, life has its own destination too. The destination is contingent on the direction the voyage is made. In case of the majority, the direction is outward – from the ‘self.’ That is why the common lot never become individuals. Rather they are reduced with time to a part of the system which is euphemistically called ‘human society.’ A few, however, make the movement in the opposite direction – to the ‘self.’ The journey of such a person is never easy. He needs to pass through various phases of life. Having done that, he gains ‘wholeness’ of existence, that is, his ‘self.’ In that self coexists the contrary inclinations – good and evil, moral and immoral, conscious and unconscious. Hermann Hesse’s timeless classic ‘Demian’ bears the same motif. The protagonist, Sinclair, is able to explore his self only when he has experienced the opposite forces of life. Sinclair’s friend Demian who throughout the journey remains his guide, becomes a part of his consciousness like God in the end.

This article deals with different relations between travel and pedagogy in al-Riḥla ilā Birlīn and Rasāʾil al-bušrā fī l-siyāḥa bi Almāniyā wa-Swīsrā, two travel accounts written by Ḥasan Tawfīq al-ʿAdl and published in Egypt between 1887 and 1892. The study allows to show how these texts tend to a pedagogy book. This pedagogical thought of author is combined with a practice. As a teacher as well as a learner, he communicates to the reader not only a big material of teaching but also his experience of learning. In these two travel accounts, the pedagogy is looking as a metaphoric extension of trip. Itinerary, mobility, urge to have a guide, contact with the other one and several elements relating to travel account are appealed to define the pedagogical activity and to practise it.

This paper reports a study on service failures carried out on the prestigious Norwegian Coastal Voyage (NCV) or the Hurtigruten which is the brand name. Service failures are studied from the perspective of the service employees. Seven tour conductors participated in the study and in the research personal, face-to-face, in-depth interviews were carried out using an interview guide as a data collection tool. The respondents provided descriptive accounts of 51 service failure incidents which were used to develop a classification scheme of service failures. The service failure classification scheme consists of two main categories: 1. Service failures on excursions; 2. Service failures on the ships (while at sea or at harbour). The paper describes and discusses a set of sub categories within the main categories. The case study may advance the knowledge field of service failures particularly relevant for a high contact service like a cruise operation.

ObjectiveTo examine the potential association of ocean voyaging with human health and well-being from the perspectives and experiences of the medical officers (MOs) who served during the Worldwide Voyage (WWV).DesignUsing a phenomenology framework, focus group and individual interviews were conducted and analysed by three diverse core researchers and then reviewed by three external researchers to enhance triangulation. Analysis used the Framework Method and Atlas-ti software (V.8.4.4) to facilitate coding, identify categories and develop an analytical matrix. The matrix was applied to all data using the constant comparative method to construct major themes and subthemes. Synthesised member checking was performed.SettingIn 2014–2017, the WWV began in Hawai’i on a traditional voyaging canoe, known as Hōkūle'a, using a non-instrument navigational method, ‘wayfinding’, powered only by natural forces and guided by traditional ecological knowledge. Each segment of the voyage included ~12 individuals, including an MO physician. The entire WWV included 172 ports-of-call, 36 legs and 250+ crew members.ParticipantsWe purposively sampled all MO physicians who participated in the WWV and enrolled 87% of eligible MOs (n=20 of 23). We conducted two focus groups (n=17=11+6, 85%) and three individual informant interviews (n=3, 15%).ResultsThe four major themes: (1) Relationships; (2) Preventive Care to Enhance Health; (3) Holistic Health and Wellbeing beyond Voyaging and (4) Spiritual Transformative Experience, strongly suggest that ocean voyaging aboard a traditional voyaging canoe enhanced human health and well-being. The overall impact to perceived health and well-being extended beyond any increase in physical exercise. Essentially, traditional Polynesian ocean voyaging provided a cultural-based context for holistic health and well-being that influenced multiple levels and multiple dimensions.ConclusionPolynesian ocean voyaging was perceived as positively associated with holistic health and overall well-being and it may offer a new approach to confront complex health disparities.

Les magazines de tourisme et de voyage utilisent un discours verbal apparemment neutre. Pourtant, une analyse qualitative du discours promotionnel, véhiculé aussi bien par le texte journalistique que par la publicité payante, nous permet de révéler la nature des mécanismes d’accroche et de persuasion, c’est-à-dire les composantes iconiques et textuelles qui interpellent très particulièrement les femmes. En effet, les discours des magazines vont montrer de subtiles marques de genre à travers lesquelles le public féminin peut se reconnaître. Nous avons circonscrit notre corpus aux textes consacrés aux prestations de bien-être, où nous avons dégagé des modèles de comportement et des tendances nouvelles ou revisitées qui nourrissent l’architecture du sens. La quête du bonheur guide l’expérience individuelle dans un parcours dépaysant qui conjugue renouveau, jouvence et beauté. Des réseaux thématiques, dont nous étudions les plus représentatifs, s’entrelacent pour orienter l’interprétation du message en vue de persuader le coeur de cible.

Le présent article porte sur le syncrétisme générique dans les romans de Christopher Gérard, écrivain belge francophone (né en 1962). Aux Armes de Bruxelles (2009) s’apparente au guide littéraire, touristique et gastronomique et au récit de la quête de la mystérieuse Louise ; Porte Louise (2010) est un mélange d’un roman d’espionnage et d’un récit de voyage ; enfin Vogelsang ou la mélancolie du vampire (2012) constitue la synthèse du fantastique, du roman policier, du roman d’amour et du conte philosophique. Nous analysons l’aspect transgénérique des textes, ainsi que divers fonctions et enjeux de cette pratique scripturale de l’auteur, fasciné par l’hybridation postmoderne. L’étude démontre qu’en mélangeant différents genres et en sabotant leurs protocoles, l’écrivain fait du neuf avec du vieux et cherche ainsi à reconfigurer l’esthétique du roman et à le renouveler. Il détruit aussi la composante émotive des genres paralittéraires et, ce faisant, dépassionne efficacement l’aventure pour focaliser l’attention du lecteur sur le thème qui lui est particulièrement cher : Bruxelles, sa ville bien-aimée.
