Background: The technology of the hammer throwing is started from the swings, turns and then the throw, it usually requires athletes to pay special attention to perform this complicated movement coordination. An athlete’s focus of attention is the main factor to influence movement performance and motor learning. Nevertheless, during the training or competition, most coaching instructions and feedback information seems to favor athletes' muscle control rather than the effect of movement in the environment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the effects of different attentional foci on performance of hammer throwring. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of internal focus and external focus on hammer throwing. Method: Ten athletes with at least 3 years of hammer throwing experiences were recruited and assigned to an internal focus and external focus conditions with five successful throws in a counterbalanced design. After experiment, athletes offered the self-assessments to indicate the comments by using different attentional foci and preferred to receive internally or externally instructions and feedback. Results: There were no significant differences between two conditions on final throwing velocity, z =-.612 , p = .541; and performance outcome, z = -1.886, but it approached the level of significance, p = .059. Conclusion: Given the unfamiliar instruction of external focus did not reduce the overall performance of hammer throwing, those results provided the evidence to support the effect of the external attentional focus. Therefore, it is suggested that coaches may be able to give the instruction of external focus as guidance when they teach motor skills. Key words: Attentional focus, hammer throwing, instruction

The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between visual gaze position and performance in hammer throwing. Participants were three male hammer players from the University of Taipei. During the experiment, the participants wear the Tobii Glasses II eye tracker for the hammer throwing test. Data collected were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and descriptive statistical. Result: First, a significant correlation was found between visual gaze position at the low point of the hammer and performance. Second, visual gaze position at the high point of the hammer and performance didn’t attain a significant level. Although the research results didn’t attain a significant level, however, it could be summarized that the three subjects visual gaze position at the high point of the hammer in relative quadrants in the first quadrant results are better than the other quadrants. Conclusions: A significant correlation was found between visual gaze position at the low point of the hammer and performance. This result could provide coaches and players with a clearer goal for visual gaze position during training, and to improve athletic performance.
