ABSTRACTIn order to give an account of the Congolese tragedy since independence, the inhabitants of Haut-Katanga often resort to four different narratives: the abandonment by Belgium; the biblical curse on Africans; the conspiracy of Western capitalism; or the alienation of life powers by Whites. Though these four stories offer different scenarios, they are all constructed with two types of actors – Whites and Congolese people. Résumé :
Context: In this era of patient-centered care, it is increasingly important for HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs to customize their services according to patients’ clinical stage progression and other risk assessments. To enable such customization of HIV care and treatment delivery, the research evidence explaining factors associated with patients’ clinical stages is needed. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to produce such scientific evidence by analyzing the most recent data for patients at outpatient clinics in the provinces of Kinshasa and Haut-Katanga and to examine

Résumé :
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and less-than-optimal care of people living with HIV (PLHIV) continue to challenge public health and clinical care organizations in the communities that are most impacted by HIV. In the era of evidence-based public health, it is imperative to monitor viral load (VL) in PLHIV according to global and national guidelines and assess the factors associated with variation in VL levels. Purpose: This study had two objectives—(a) to describe the levels of HIV VL in persons on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and (b) to analyze the significance of variation in

Résumé :
An adequate design of port structures along waterways requires a good knowledge of the geotechnical properties of the surrounding soils. This study aims to characterize the geotechnical laboratory properties of alluvial soils along the Lubumbashi river (section between the Tshombe and Tshondo bridges, approximately 3 km long) in the city of Lubumbashi, province of Haut Katanga in DR Congo. To meet this objective, five sampling zones were selected from which samples were taken with a hand auger and various geotechnical laboratory tests were performed. Identification tests reveal that the tested

The main objective of this research was to assess the level of soil contamination of Ruashi Mining sites and its surroundings by metallic trace elements. The samples of the soils studied were taken during the month of June 2020. The clod of earth was taken at a depth of 20 cm and 40 cm by a manual auger and was packed in a plastic bag before the analyzes in the laboratory. After drying, they were ground and then sieved to 2 mm mesh. The Cd, Cr, Co, Cu and Zn were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The results showed that all the soils of the Ruashi sites were amply contaminat

Melioidosis and its germ are increasingly reported on the African continent and particularly in Central Africa, probably due to the increased awareness of clinicians and microbiologists and the growing recognition of the organism. It is called "Great Mimicker" because it produces a wide range of clinical characteristics such as would be found in patients living with sickle cell disease (SCD) in particular. However, to date, no publication presents this association between melioidosis and SCD. The authors describe here 3 clinical cases presenting this very rare association between melioidosis a

In Lubumbashi, the capital of Haut Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), diesel power plants are a common source of electricity. The need to utilize local renewable energy sources in DR Congo has increased due to the unreliability of the state grid and the rising cost of running diesel generators. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and batteries, in particular, have recently recorded significant price drops. It is important for operators and suppliers to choose optimal generators together with a renewable energy system to lessen the energy deficit. Diesel generators are still
