Résumé :
The question of what men are and what they want has become central to public debates and private concerns but we cannot understand what is happening if we see it as a problem for men alone. It needs to be considered as part of a long process in which masculinity and femininity, sexual normality and abnormality, and the nature of intimate life are being profoundly shaken. The emergence of a crisis discourse around masculinity has served to obscure the different conditions under which men live their lives, and to exaggerate in turn the radical dichotomy of men and women. Binary divisions along gender and sexual lines can be seen as an historical fiction which conceals a much more confused mixture of fears, anxieties and desires about what being a man means. The dramatic social and cultural changes that we are now witnessing provide conditions for reinventing the relations of gender and sexuality.

Unlike his previous realistic novels Yawar fiesta, Los ríos profundos and Todas las sangres, which have a more anthropologically descriptive view of Indians and their relations to the colonizing peoples, this novel adopts magic realism and is about the lost paradise of Chimbote, a coastal city. Arguedas’ image of the exploited city as a fallen woman is a prescient critique, which confirms tenets of the discourse of Val Plumwood and other contemporary ecofeminists. Although the mythical “zorros” from the highlands and the lowlands are derived from Moche culture and other Peruvian legends, in his new myth recreated in their dialogue, the “zorros” become “trickster heroes” in a modern age with their mythic voices. Through their dialogue, Arguedas is able to transcend time and space to give the readers a broad eco-critical perspective of the course of environmental and social degradation under rampant industrialization in 20th century Peru.

Résumé :
Abstract Even though neurosurgeons exercise these enormous and versatile skills, the COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the fabrics of the global neurosurgical family, jeopardizing human lives, and forcing the entire world to be locked down. We stand on the shoulders of the giants and will not forget their examples and their teachings. We will work to the best of our ability to honor their memory. Professor Harvey Cushing said: “When to take great risks; when to withdraw in the face of unexpected difficulties; whether to force an attempted enucleation of a pathologically favorable tumor to its completion with the prospect of an operative fatality, or to abandon the procedure short of completeness with the certainty that after months or years even greater risks may have to be faced at a subsequent session—all these require surgical judgment which is a matter of long experience.” It is up to us, therefore, to keep on the noble path that we have decided to undertake, to accumulate the surgical experience that these icons have shown us, the fruit of sacrifice and obstinacy. Our tribute goes to them; we will always remember their excellent work and their brilliant careers that will continue to enlighten all of us.

Résumé :
In February 1998, the entire Czech Republic was in jubilation over the gold medal victory of its ice-hockey team at the Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. The players were spectacularly welcomed home by tens of thousands of fans, including ordinary citizens and political figures. Goal-keeper Dominik Hašek, the famous NHL star Jaromír Jágr, and team captain Vladimír R?ži?ka, were heavily covered by the media. The three athletes went on to have successful careers after Nagano. Czech media coverage played a significant role in the „Naganomania“ of the time and was later also to assist in the social fall of some of those heroes. Based on the theory of myths in sports journalism, the concept of fallen heroes, and the media frame analysis, this paper presents the development within the media coverage of the four above-mentioned athletes in selected Czech dailies. The media portrayals of these athletes so similarly celebrated in 1998 are shown to have diversely evolved over a twenty year span.

Résumé :
David R. Gillingham, born 1947, has established himself as one of today's leading contemporary composers. His current emphasis is on music for wind band, and to date he has over sixty published works for wind band and chamber winds and percussion, representing nearly twenty-five years of composition. Gillingham has received First Prize in the International Barlow Competition in Composition and First Prize in the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Commissioning Contest. Gillingham's works for wind band are performed regularly across the globe by professional and school bands, and he currently has commissions in progress scheduled through 2006.The purpose of this study was to thoroughly examine and document a descriptive analysis of three of Gillingham's works for wind band in order to observe similarities and differences in his compositional style that might prove useful as a reference to prospective conductors and scholars of Gillingham's music. The three works include Heroes, Lost and Fallen (1989), Apocalyptic Dreams (1995) and Cantus Laetus (2000). Separate chapters contain the background and analysis of each work including a comprehensive erratum. An additional chapter includes a lengthy interview transcript covering Gillingham's complete background as a practicing musician and composer, his habits, practices, and attitudes toward composing and teaching. A complete works list of all Gillingham's compositions concludes the study. This list includes compositions in all mediums for which Gillingham has written. Each entry includes the following information: title, date, commission, current publication status, instrumentation, and first performance information.

Meints, Renata Del Rio. « The fallen artist : : the influence of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" on James Joyce's "A portrait of the artist as a young man" ». Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ECAP-7PYHB9.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis is a study of the influence exerted by John Milton's Paradise Lost on James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Its main character, Stephen Dedalus, narrates some remarkable passages of his life, through his childhood and young age, and his passage from a state of innocence to his first sinful experiences, being the first taken by the hands of a woman. This work focuses on Stephen's sins and repentance, his unwillingness to serve, his non serviam, and the whole course of his sins, in which I claim to have been influenced by Milton's characters in Paradise Lost, Adam, Eve, and Satan. The concepts and theories used to define influence used in this work are Harold Bloom's revisionary ratios, Patrick Colm Hogan's psychology and economy of influence, and Luiz Fernando Ferreira Sá's notion of influence as influx and inflow. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is Joyce's tentative to propose an alternative to the ones who choose not to serve, as Milton failed to do, and be a true artificer of wor(l)ds.

Adendorff, Melissa. « Where the Shadows Lie : finding the other in the Spatial Depictions of the Underworld in The Book of Enoch, Inferno and Paradise Lost ». Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25701.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
“Where the Shadows Lie: Finding the Other in the Spatial Depictions of the Underworld in The Book of Enoch, Inferno and Paradise Lost” answers a question of spatial behaviour in the three texts, in terms of the portrayal of the characters of Fallen Angels, who have been Othered from Heaven, in each text within the spatial context of their respective heterotopias. The spatial behaviour refers to how these characters are portrayed to act within a certain space, with that behaviour directly shaped and influenced by the space and place that the characters are depicted in. The question of spatial behaviour in this study revolves around whether the behaviour within the Othered space is that of acceptance, or of rebellion. The narrative of each text is analysed as a whole, in order to be contextualised through a Narratological analysis, as well as a Hermeneutic reading and a contextualisation within the realm of Social-Scientific Criticism. The texts are then analysed in more detail, with particular focus given to 1 Enoch 6-21, lines 1-9 and 22-57 in Inferno, and lines 33-45, 52-55, and 64-110 in Paradise Lost in order to Deconstruct their base similarities and then to answer the research question of spatial behaviour through Critical Spatiality. This analysis investigates the aspect of Thirding-as-Othering, in terms of how the Othered space is represented, and how the (Othered) Fallen Angels inhabit that space, based on the choices available to them: either, accept the imposed differentiation and division, or to resist their own “Otherness” and the Othered space that they were sentenced to. These spatial behaviours depict the choices taken by the author of each text, based on the cultural and religious values of their times and cultures, to represent the spatial behavioural options of their narratives’ characters. These options are the choice to fight against the banishment and make a space of Power out of the Othered space, or to accept being Othered and accept the Othered space for the prison it is meant to portray. This study incorporates a Narratological Analysis of The Book of Enoch, Inferno and Paradise Lost, followed by a Hermeneutical Interpretation and Social-Scientific reading. The texts are then analysed in terms of the focal points of 1 Enoch 6-21, lines 1-9 and 22-57 in Inferno, and lines 33-45, 52-55, and 64-110 in Paradise Lost, and are Deconstructed in terms of the spatial depictions of the Underworlds in order to determine the similarities in conditions, both physical and emotional, that are created by the Thirding, which is ultimately investigated, in terms of Critical Spatial Theory, in order to answer the aforementioned research question.

Lovela, Cecilia. « Female Resistance in a World of Epic Heroes and Legendary Adventures : A feminist reading of Rick Riordan’s The Lost Hero, inspired by Luce Irigaray’s “The Power of Discourse and the Subordination of the Feminine” ». Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Engelska, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-38526.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Literature is an important part of the curriculum of Swedish secondary school and The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan is a popular novel among teenagers in Stockholm. This creates an opportunity to look closer at the novel, and to investigate the narrative’s discussion of the female, and in this particular case, its depictions of the female characters. This essay will show that by reading the novel with a feminist approach, inspired by the work of Luce Irigaray, the narrative reveals cultural aspects that might work well as a ground for discussions in the classroom. This essay considers how the narrative allows for opportunities of female resistance. Without replacing the male on the frontier of adventure, and without betraying their femininity, the female characters of the novel manage to change the power dynamic of how they are perceived. The female protagonist, Piper, works as a gatekeeper for the female resistance, and eliminates – for the cause – unbeneficial female behaviours. A feminist approach is beneficial to the diversity that is expected in Swedish secondary school. In addition to already existing research on Riordan’s work, this essay helps justify why The Lost Hero is a good literary alternative for the classroom.

Résumé :
This thesis focuses on the way in which the media presented the Czech biathlon team over the period of its greatest success, between 2012 and 2018. In this context, it deals with how often the media presented relationships, mood and cooperation in the team as perfect, helping to create the myth of an ideal team. The aim of the thesis is to answer the research question: How was the myth of an ideal biathlon team constructed by the media, biathlonists and the support team? This question is answered through an analysis of biathlon articles published in the years 2012 - 2018 across four Czech sports diaries, namely iSport.cz, sport.cz, sport.aktualne.cz and sport.iDNES.cz. The analysis uses qualitative content analysis extended by linguistic analysis of discourse. The analysis of the individual articles is based on theoretical background, devoted to the media's representation of reality, media logic, myth, heroism, myth in sport and discourse. The results of the analysis describe the way and means by which the actors helped construct the myth of a perfectly functioning biathlon team. The methods used with examples are given at the end of the thesis.

Résumé :
A large number of containers (approximately 1500 containers) are fallen over board annually due to different reasons such as encountering heavy weather, collision with the other vessels or grounding which consequently cause serious problems and difficulties such as: (1) Endangering the safety of navigation, reducing the depth of the channels, (2) Damaging the environment (rocks, coral), (3) Endangering the life of fishes and underwater species, (4) Pollution, as numbers of containers are loaded with dangerous chemicals, (5)Debris washing up beaches making beaches dirty endangering environment and tourism industry, (6) Damaging the fishermen nets, (7)Wasting a lot of time and manpower, including the use of highly technical equipment, to find and recover them and (8) Unnecessary additional costs to the ship owners/charterers.The containers are loaded on the container ships/general cargo vessels by calculating several factors such as: stability of the vessel, lashing requirements of containers, stack loads, dangerous good compliance with International Maritime dangerous Good code (IMDG), wind effect, minimum visibility. A bay plan is the plan which describes the position of all containers on board a ship, whether inside cargo holds or on top of the hatch covers. It has come to author’s mind of fitting a tracking device outside the container. The proposed device can be named"Container Automatic Tracking System (CATS)".

Three children with severe inherited bleeding disorders have been followed for a number of years at this center. One child (DOB 3/71) initially presented with mild hemophilia A, (Factor VIII 6%). He subsequently developed an inhibitor to Factor VIII (maximum 45 B. U.) and seroconverted to HIV+ Status 12/83. In 12/86 he had virtually lost his antibody response to infused Factor VIII (previously withheld), with a maximum increase in inhibitor titre to1 B. U. on challenge. In addition, his antitetanus antibody titre was very low at 0.01 u/ml earlier in theyear. His absolute T4 cell number at this time was very low at 64 and did not respond to skin antigen testing to PPD, tetanus and Candida. The second patient (severe hemophilia A DOB 7/76) had seroconvertedto HIV+ Status in 9/78. This child has lost his a-HBs seropositive status with an absolute T4 count of 239. His current anti-tetanus titre is 0.01 u/ml.The third patient (von Willebrand disease, Type III, DOB 7/74) seroconverted to HIV+E status by 5/83. His T4 absolute numbers have fallen to 53. His anti-tetanus antibody titre has fallen to extremely low levels (0.01 u/ml), and this failed to respond to re-immunization with tetanus toxoid. These three patients indicate that previously immunized children may lose their immune status and their ability to respond to recall antigens. It is pertinent to note that lymphocytes from all 3 patients failed to respond mitogenically in vitro to tetanus antigen pari passu with the observed very low anti-tetanus antibody titres. These phenomena would indicate that these patients are probably susceptible to previously preventable infectious agents including poliovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and hepatitis B virus.

Bees are the main pollinators of most wild and cultivated plant species, thus being essential for the maintenance of plant ecosystems and for food production. But they are threatened due to a series of drivers such as pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. Here, we propose a method to iden- tify the loss of thermoregulation capacity in honeybee colonies. We applied the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm, which is based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), to six real datasets of the Arnia remote hive monitoring system. From brood temperatures gathered along the European fall season in 2017, the LSTM was able to detect when a honeybee colony is about to lose its thermoregulation capacity. Our results showed an error of only 0.5% in predic- tion for well-thermoregulated beehives.

Résumé :
The generation of electrical and thermal power is a matter of critical importance to the modern world. Considerable quantities of both power types are required in all sectors of society; industrial, domestic and leisure, with the future prosperity of both developed and developing societies being dependant on generation of both a sufficient quantity and quality of power. Central to this discussion on the international front is the topic of fossil fuel usage. Despite considerable advances in renewable energy conversion technologies, the human race remains dependant on fossil fuels as a primary energy source. With increasing demand for these finite resources giving rise to strained international relations and economic uncertainty, emphasis has fallen on optimization of usage patterns. The area of power plant efficiency is essential to this optimization. This paper proposes a method for increasing the efficiency of an Otto cycle engine based plant as is typically used in CHP and other Distributed Generation scenarios. The method proposed is to utilise a Stirling cycle engine as a heat recovery device on the exhaust stream of the Otto engine. Thermal energy that may otherwise be lost would thereby be recovered and used to generate additional electrical power. In this manner energy is effectively diverted from the exhaust flow of the engine and converted to mechanical work by way of the Stirling cycle engine. It is postulated that this combined cycle will yield higher plant efficiency than the Otto engine alone. This paper introduces work completed to date and an experimental plan for the project. The project was initiated at undergraduate level as a feasibility study for application of the hybrid engine in automotive circumstances. The study suggested that the combination of the engines in the proposed manner was indeed feasible, with significant power gains possible. However, it proved unlikely that automotive application was the best use of the system unless certain constraints were addressed. Therefore, it was decided to pursue the concept in terms of a stationary generation system. The advantages of the stationary system over the automotive system are addressed briefly, with the constraints of the automotive scenario analysed and their relevance to the stationary generation situation examined. The central areas under investigation are detailed, including thermodynamic theory pertaining to the Otto cycle and Stirling cycle engines, and the combined cycles. Possible limiting factors to the design are discussed also.

Résumé :
As proven in the preceding pilot study the historical Viennese ground floor originally presented an intruiging and essential semi-public sphere with no clear-cut boundary between inside and out. Rather, doors and windows were left open most of the time so that there were many points that gave access to the ground-floor premises. Original photos from the period attest to this: the ground-floor facades were permeable; semi-public or even private uses of the ground floor extended to the street, and conversely, the premises were easily accessible to the “public flow.” In addition many of the ground-floor premises in the chosen research area were connected with basement floors or cellars underneath, which meant a further extension of the urban parterre. The (commercial) use of the street-facing premises in most cases also included the interior courtyard. Today, interior courtyards mostly accommodate garbage cans or dumpsters; more intensive, diversified uses of this part of the StadtParterre nowadays are rare. Thus the historical StadtParterre was a ramified, varied, much-used and hence engaging space. Permeable ground-floor facades provided a flexible interface between public and semi-public spaces; intensely interacting with one another. First and foremost, though, the point here is to acknowledge the significance of the urban parterre for the functoning of a city—a fact that has somewhat fallen into oblivion in the noughties of the 21st century ever since the emergence of 3D city modeling. The reason for this may be that conventional 3D city models canot really represent intricate, small-scale, multilayered, and ramified ground-floor structures und thus prevent us from perceiving them in a broader functional perspective. The paper discusses reasons and socio-urban effects of a dis-linked, malfunctioning urban parterre.References Anderson, S. ed. Résumé :
Noise and vibrations in locomotive cabs can significantly affect crew performance and cause long-term ailments, such as hearing loss, fatigue, and low back pain. Methods to reduce noise and vibrations have been implemented for the high frequency range but resulted in low frequency resonances. These resonances can exacerbate low frequency vibrations (<0.5 Hz), which can cause motion sickness. In addition, a tonal noise exists in the 50 to 200 Hz frequency range, which is more annoying than broadband noise, and which is not addressed in current noise reduction methods based on A-weighted noise metrics. To reduce vibration, the innovative approach proposed here will consider isolating only the floor of the cab rather than the whole cab as was previously reported in the literature. The isolation is achieved using nonlinear springs and dampers that provide isolation at high frequencies while avoiding resonances at low frequencies. The smaller inertia of the floor, controls, and crew, as compared to the entire cab, makes the necessary components much less expensive. To reduce the tonal noise in the range 50 to 200 Hz, active noise control is used in the vicinity of the crew seats. Analyses have shown that this new approach is very promising, and demonstrations are planned for mockups of locomotive cabs.

Résumé :
The centrifugal compressor design of the high-speed marine engine (500–900 kW) turbocharger has been done. Increased Higher compressed air and power density help improvement of the engine performance and power. The centrifugal compressor of the marine engine turbocharger is composed of impeller, 1st vaneless diffuser, vaned diffuser, 2nd vaneless diffuser and volute casing. The design process is achieved by three following stages. First, quasi-two dimensional code is used to determine the main geometry of the compressor. Second, three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equation is applied to analyze the flow pattern and structures of the compressor blade loading. Here, among compressor impeller geometry, blade height variables are mainly changed. Smooth flow guidance has to precede and flow separation symptoms must not appear within compressor impeller. When the loading distribution is inadequate from blade hub to shroud, new curved profile should be designed to minimize the pressure loss. By analyzing the internal flow fields for the compressor impeller geometry variations, three dimensional impeller design profile has been confirmed. Compressed air pressure and mass flow rates from new optimized design were 2.7%, 27.3% higher than that of old one each other. Third, analyzed results are compared with experimental data for the verification of the present design method.

Résumé :
Over the past two years, we have conducted two experimental test series aimed at examining typical performance of gasoline V-twin engines in the 25 hp class, and the suitability of assumed mechanical efficiency in correcting observed measurements. We used engines manufactured by Honda, Kawasaki, Kohler, and Subaru (Robin). The tests were conducted at the Engines Laboratory of the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). The Kohler engines are fuel injected while the others three are carbureted. We tested twenty-eight engines in total. The first series of tests included four horizontal shaft engines from each of the manufacturers (sixteen in total), and followed the general guidelines of SAE standard J1349-199506. This paper reports primarily on the subsequent series of twelve engine tests, which included vertical shaft engines of an equivalent family (and displacement class), from three of the original manufacturers: Honda, Kawasaki and Kohler. All three engines have roughly the same engine speed range (2000–4000), and all three reportedly reach peak power at 3600rpm. This is typical of small engines, which may be used to drive small generators in addition to being installed on other equipment. Vertical shaft engines are typically tested on a vertical shaft dynamometer, or one that converts from a horizontal to vertical position. However, these dynamometers are typically either of the water brake or eddy current type. They cannot motor the engine, and thus cannot measure friction mean effective pressure (FMEP) directly, which is the preferred method to quantify friction and mechanical efficiency for engine testing. However, testing vertical shaft engines on a horizontal shaft motoring dynamometer requires an angled gear drive to mate the engine to the dynamometer, and thus adds a loss that complicates the accurate measurement of FMEP and brake output. We present here results using a simple method with which our measurements can be corrected for this loss, in tests of this sort. The study thus expands on our previous results, and shows the extent by which engine to engine variations are affected by shaft configurations, within a given model family, and within similar offerings by different manufacturers. We also analyzed our results to contrast the methodology of SAE J1349-199506 with that of the updated J1349-201109, specifically with respect to using an assumed value of mechanical efficiency to characterize FMEP and correct dynamometer data on small, general utility engines.

Résumé :
Abstract Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engines are considered an attractive alternative to traditional spark-ignition and diesel engines. In this work, a Machine Learning-Grid Gradient Algorithm (ML-GGA) approach was developed to optimize the performance of internal combustion engines. Machine learning (ML) offers a pathway to transform complex physical processes that occur in a combustion engine into compact informational processes. The developed ML-GGA model was compared with a recently developed Machine learning Genetic Algorithm (ML-GA). Detailed investigations of optimization solver parameters and variables limits extension were performed in the present ML-GGA model to improve the accuracy and robustness of the optimization process. Detailed descriptions of the different procedures, optimization tools and criteria that must be followed for a successful output are provided here. The developed ML-GGA approach was used to optimize the operating conditions (case 1) and the piston bowl design (case 2) of a heavy-duty diesel engine running on a gasoline fuel with a Research Octane Number (RON) of 80. The ML-GGA approach yielded > 2% improvements in the merit function, compared to the optimum obtained from a thorough computational fluid dynamics (CFD) guided system optimization. The predictions from the ML-GGA approach were validated with engine CFD simulations. This study demonstrates the potential of ML-GGA to significantly reduce the time needed for optimization problems, without loss in accuracy compared to traditional approaches.
