Résumé :
AbstractThere has been public outcry from philosophers and others at the prospect of the closure of Heythrop College, University of London; yet the nature and history of Heythrop remain little known. It is apt and timely, therefore, as its likely dissolution approaches, to provide a brief account of its origins and development up to and including the period of its entry into London University under the leadership of the most famous modern historian of philosophy Frederick Copleston. Following on from this, the idea of a distinctive Jesuit intellectual tradition, and more specifically of the Jesuit contribution to philosophy, is explored.

Résumé :
This dual authored paper reports and reflects on theological action research carried out with an instance of the Fresh Expressions church, Messy Church. Locating the work in the wider ecclesiological debates surrounding Fresh Expressions, the authors describe the research methods used, before going on to develop ecclesiological reflection in a conversational form. As such, the paper is an example of the ‘four voices’ approach to theological action research developed by the ARCS team (Action research - Church and Society, Heythrop College, University of London). As both practitioners and academics reflect together a number of significant insights emerge about the ways in which Messy Church might be understood as church: the possibility of being a ‘church to an (as yet) unknown God’; the understanding of being a searching church, a community of journey; and the vision of an expansive, centred ecclesiology, which cares less about boundaries and definitions, and seeks more to affirm a variety of ecclesial relations. These themes, variously discussed by the different parties, offer an account of both practical and systematic theological learning through attentiveness to contemporary practices of church.

Résumé :
This research work focuses on the factors which lead investors to finance university spin-outs. The achieved results related to spin-out companies in the United Kingdom are based on empirical evidence from Imperial College London. The characteristics of a sample of 557 university spin-outs have been examined in order to understand the investors’ attitude towards financing this typology of companies. The outputs of this study demonstrate that official spin-out companies supported by Imperial College are more likely to receive an investment. Furthermore, it is also shown that investors are not inclined to finance academic spin-outs in which the board of directors includes academics who are mainly involved in researching and teaching activities.

Likeman, Janet. « Nursing at University College Hospital, London, 1862-1948 : from Christian vocation to secular profession ». Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10020394/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines the development of nursing at University College Hospital, London, between 1862, the year in which the All Saints Sisters assumed responsibility for the provision of nursing services at the hospital, and the introduction of the National Health Service in July 1948. Although the care provided by the sisters marked a considerable improvement on what had gone before, in 1899 they were replaced by nurses whose motivation was professional rather than vocational. The profession of nursing was confirmed by the Registration Act of 1919. Following an introduction, the initial chapters of the thesis are concerned with defining and developing the themes of Christian vocation and secular profession. Chapter four is devoted to nursing management across the period, and the following chapter to patterns of care. Prior to 1919 a system of primary care was in operation; this was superseded by task allocation. Chapters six and seven outline the introduction of nurse training in some of the London teaching hospitals in comparison to the training of nurses at U.C.H. An analysis of the probationer records from 1890 - 1948 demonstrates recruitment and retention through these years. With the departure of the All Saints Sisters from U.C.H. in 1899 the school of nursing was established. A preliminary training school was introduced in 1926; ten years later University College Hospital school of nursing pioneered the block system of training which became the norm for all schools of nursing after the Second World War. The next two chapters concentrate upon nursing developments in wartime. The All Saints Sisters were part of the British Red Cross team that served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the hospital and its nurses were fully involved in the two World Wars. Although this period saw the transformation of nursing at U.C.H. from a Christian vocation to a secular profession, this thesis is as much concerned with continuity as with change - for example in noting the similarities between rules for the probationers and for the novitiates, which had continuing influence throughout the years of this study.

Casey, E. (Etain). « Walter Ripman and the University of London Holiday Course in English for Foreign Teachers 1903–1952 ». Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2017. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526216133.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract The thesis presents a case-study through which the linguistic purpose and historical and social context of the University of London Holiday Course in English Language for Foreign Teachers, is analysed and interpreted. The study foregrounds the context, content and development of one of the smallest academic units, a four-week short course, to contribute to our understanding of how international students of English language were taught and assessed in a particular university context in the early 20th century. The period from 1903 to 1952 is examined in order to understand why the course was successful and the impact of the work of Walter Ripman (1869-1947) who directed the course until 1939. Ripman is better known as a teacher of German and a significant figure in the German Reform Movement, which originated in 19th century Germany, but his approach to culture, phonetics and vocabulary acquisition in English language teaching and learning is less well known. The study goes beyond a history of his methodology to investigate and critically assess the formula that Ripman developed for the design of the short, university English language course and compares it with a similar course run at University College London by Daniel Jones. The changes that were made to the content and purpose of the course, following Ripman’s retirement in 1939, are examined as to how far they reflected the effects of war and the continued desire to internationalise the University itself by aligning the content of the courses more closely to the University programmes. The nature and importance of the web of relationships between staff in the success and longevity of the course are analysed and in particular the contribution of women to better understand their role in the learned world at that time

Sibanda, Sipho. « An appraisal of the role of the universities in city development : a case study of the University of Fort Hare in East London, South Africa ». Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/5499.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The role of universities in contributing to the development of their host cities is a subject of ongoing scholarly debate. This is because the contemporary complex and competitive economic and technological global environment requires rapid adaptation to shifting opportunities and constraints in a global knowledge economy. Higher education has thus become an engine of development for cities and nations in the developing world. In line with this global trend, the South African government has thus mandated higher education institutions to play a more active role in addressing the development needs of the country. Within this context, this study therefore embarked on an appraisal of the University of Fort Hare’s (UFH) contribution to the development of its host city, East London in South Africa. The study employed a qualitative approach and used semi structured interviews as a primary data collection tool. The sampling technique was purposive sampling as the study targeted key respondents that had rich information about their departments and organisations. The study found that the university interacts with the city on a number of platforms and advisory boards established by some university departments. The main contribution was realised through relevant research carried out by academics in different departments within the city which informs developmental policy for the local government and contributes positively to the private sector. The University of Fort Hare also serves as a major labour supplier for both the public and private sector. The study however established that UFH is not producing technical graduates which are a critical skill in the private sector, specifically in the automotive industry which is the back bone of the city. This skills gap presents an opportunity for the university to expand its programmes so as to address the needs of private industry. In terms of policy, the study recommends the need for a convener or an intermediary to champion collaboration of the university with the city and the private sector.

Vítor, Catarina Cardoso Rodrigues Bonifácio. « A qualitative assessment of an education programme for advanced pharmacy practice ». Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/34526.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Trabalho Final de Mestrado Integrado, Ciências Farmacêuticas, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Farmácia, 2016
Objective: To understand graduates’ perceptions about an advanced education programme for pharmacist practitioners (the MSc in Advanced Pharmacy Practice - APP fast-track) and to identify how the acquired skills and knowledge from this programme have been used at their workplaces. Methods: A purposive sample was chosen and potential participants were contacted by email. The inclusion criteria was pharmacists of any background graduated from the MScPP (APP fast-track). A semi-structured interview was conducted and interviews (n=15) were later manually transcribed. The transcriptions were imported into the software QSR NVivo 11® and a matrix coding approach was used for data analysis. Results: Participants’ representations concerned motivation, value and challenges of the programme, as well as impact at the workplace and arisen opportunities. Data reveals similar levels of impact from graduates with different years of practice. Almost all participants applied for membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Faculty (n=11) which appears to be related with continuing professional development, by keeping up-to-date in the pharmacy profession. Concerning the different professional roles before enrolling on the MScPP, 14 graduates were clinical pharmacists and one worked in academia. Despite that, positive impact was registered in both professional role groups. The MScPP quality was frequently pointed as main reason for valuing the programme and the most quoted challenge was time as this is 12-month part-time taught postgraduate programme. Conclusion: This study concluded that the MScPP has definitely impact positively on short-term career progression and has adapted to different specialisations, bringing added benefits to different practitioners. Therefore, the MScPP appears to be fulfilling its objective to progress advanced practice. The idea of duplicating the MScPP more locally, so it would be accessible to more pharmacists in the United Kingdom, should be considered.

AbstractFrom the 1851 Exhibition Scholarship Committee to Pawsey on 1 October 1931:Pawsey started out in research in the midst of excitement over the possibilities of radio communications and the iteratively developing physical understanding of the ionosphere and of the equipment that might be used to investigate it. During 1926–28 he completed his BSc at the University of Melbourne, Victoria. In 1929 he began a Master’s Degree, which was at that time a research-only degree, under the direction of Professor T.H. Laby. He was supported by receiving the M.J. Bartlett Research Scholarship. Presumably this, along with his work as a tutor in Physics at Queens College, provided him with a small, but independent, income. He embarked on a study of “atmospherics”—electrical disturbances in the atmosphere that Appleton, at King’s College, London, and others had linked in part with thunderstorm activity—and their impact on radio broadcasting. From January 1930 to August 1931, he carried out observations using a cathode ray direction finder, working with George H. Munro and Lenard Huxley as part of the Australian Radio Research Board (RRB). Pawsey wrote in 1933: “We were able to give strong evidence that all atmospherics originate in lightning flashes, and made measurements of intensity enabling the distance of the thunderstorms to be roughly determined.” (Ratcliffe & Pawsey, 1933)

Résumé :
Legacy waste treatment, storage and disposal, as well as decommissioning and site remediation, from the UK’s civil nuclear programme are estimated at a cost of £70B. Within the UK, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) directs the strategy for all civil nuclear decommissioning and demanding timescales have been set for remediation of all nuclear sites. Additionally, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) recently delivered a recommendation, accepted by Government, that geological disposal in a mined repository presents the “best available approach” for long term management of the waste legacy. There is therefore a requirement to decommission all power generation and experimental reactors, and fuel reprocessing plants, to decontaminate land, and to return nuclear licensed sites to brown or green field status. The engineering and scientific challenges that lie ahead in meeting these targets are significant, and many of the ideas required to deliver the final end state have not yet been researched. In recognition of this the UK Research Council’s Energy Programme released a call for research proposals in the area of nuclear waste management and decommissioning valued at £4M. A grant was subsequently awarded in 2008 to a consortium led by the University of Leeds, with member universities from Manchester, Imperial College, Sheffield, Loughborough and University College London. The DIAMOND (Decommissioning, Immobilisation And Management Of Nuclear Wastes For Disposal) consortium will undertake research aligned with the strategic priorities of the NDA and the CoRWM recommendations. Its primary purpose is to be adventurous and to deliver innovation. However, research is also being performed that will be of more immediate benefit to industrial stakeholders, with near-term impact achieved through the adoption of off-the-shelf technology currently implemented by other industries. Currently more than 20 industrial organisations are linked directly to the consortium. The aims of the consortium are to carry out internationally leading research in the areas of decommissioning and waste management that underpins the development of innovative and relevant technologies for industrial use. It will broaden the research base that focuses on relevant technologies, support new links within and between universities, promote multi-disciplinary collaboration and new applications of existing knowledge, and train the next generation of researchers to address a developing skills gap.

Résumé :
This paper addresses the propeller singing mitigation strategy of implementing an anti-singing edge so that the vortex shedding mechanism causing the excitation at the trailing edge of the propeller blade can be reduced. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes model with a k-ε turbulence formulation in 2D-flow was used to investigate the problem numerically. Simulations on a NACA 0009 hydrofoil with varying inflow velocity, angle of attack, and bevel angle were done. The content in this paper is a summary of the work done by the author during his MSc Individual Project at University College London (Johannessen, MSc thesis, 2020).

Résumé :
The Keeping the Nuclear Option Open (KNOO) research consortium is a four-year research council funded initiative addressing the challenges related to increasing the safety, reliability and sustainability of nuclear power in the UK. Through collaboration between key industrial and governmental stakeholders, and with international partners, KNOO was established to maintain and develop skills relevant to nuclear power generation. Funded by a research grant of £6.1M from the “Towards a Sustainable Energy Economy Programme” of the UK Research Councils, it represents the single largest university-based nuclear research programme in the UK for more than 30 years. The programme is led by Imperial College London, in collaboration with the universities of Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff and the Open University. These universities are working with the UK nuclear industry, who contributed a further £0.4M in funding. The industry/government stakeholders include AWE, British Energy, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Environment Agency, the Health and Safety Executive, Doosan Babcock, the Ministry of Defence, Nirex, AMEC NNC, Rolls-Royce PLC and the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Work Package 3 of this consortium, led by the University of Leeds, concerns “An Integrated Approach to Waste Immobilisation and Management”, and involves Imperial College London, and the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield. The aims of this work package are: to study the re-mobilisation, transport, solid-liquid separation and immobilisation of particulate wastes; to develop predictive models for particle behaviour based on atomic scale, thermodynamic and process scale simulations; to develop a fundamental understanding of selective adsorption of nuclides onto filter systems and their immobilisation; and to consider mechanisms of nuclide leaving and transport. The paper describes highlights from this work in the key areas of multi-scale modeling (using atomic scale, thermodynamic and process scale models), the engineering properties of waste (linking microscopic and macroscopic behaviour, and transport and rheology), and waste reactivity (considering waste hosts and wasteforms, generation IV wastes, and waste interactions).

Résumé :
Abstract Reclaiming public space at Oakland's Arroyo Public Park, a nexus of crime and illegal activities. A coalition of neighbors invited local performing artists to help animate city agencies, inspire repair of the amphitheater and create daytime performances in the summer, mostly by children. It gave voice to and represented many people. Reclaiming space for community was the impetus, structured curriculum activates were means. Safe public space and learning were two inseparable goals. Conciliation learning through specific responses, example: Crisis Of Perseverance acute among children and youth lacking role models or witnessing success through perseverance. Artists of all types are the embodiment of achievable mastery and completion. Taking place on redefined historic 1940 passenger-cargo/military ship for public peacetime use and as a cultural space. Mixt generations after and outside school programs: Children and Architecture project’s intention was to integrate children’s internal wisdom of playing with learning about the world of architecture (environment and co-habitability) as starting point was an intergenerational setting: 5-12 olds + parents and volunteers, twice weekly from 1989 to 1995 at the Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland, California. Concluding Examples Public celebration and engagements as inadvertent conciliations if prepared for before hand. Biographical sketch: Slobodan Dan Paich native of former Yugoslavia was born 1945. He lived in England from 1967 to 1985. Slobodan taught the History of Art and Ideas, Design and Art Studio from 1969 through 1985 at various institutions in London, including North-East London Polytechnic, Thames Polytechnic and Richmond College-American University in London. Between 1986 to1992, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley. With a number of scholars, artists, and community leaders, he founded the Artship Foundation in 1992, and has been its Executive Director ever since. He also served as a board member of the Society of Founders of the International Peace University in Berlin/Vienna from 1996 to 2002, where he lectured annually and chaired its Committee on Arts and Culture. community@artship.org
