Résumé :

We investigated the time-dependent modulation of arterial baroreflex (ABR) control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) that occurs during isometric handgrip exercise (IHG). Thirteen healthy subjects performed a 3-min IHG at 30% maximal voluntary contraction, which was followed by a period of imposed postexercise muscle ischemia (PEMI). The ABR control of MSNA (burst incidence and strength and total activity) was evaluated by analyzing the relationship between spontaneous variations in diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and MSNA during supine rest, at each minute of IHG, and during PEMI. We found that 1) the linear relations between DAP and MSNA variables were shifted progressively rightward until the third minute of IHG (IHG3); 2) 2 min into IHG (IHG2), the DAP-MSNA relations were shifted upward and were shifted further upward at IHG3; 3) the sensitivity of the ABR control of total MSNA was increased at IHG2 and increased further at IHG3; and 4) during PEMI, the ABR operating pressure was slightly higher than at IHG2, and the sensitivity of the control of total MSNA was the same as at IHG2. During PEMI, the DAP-burst strength and DAP-total MSNA relations were shifted downward from the IHG3 level to the IHG2 level, whereas the DAP-burst incidence relation remained at the IHG3 level. These results indicate that during IHG, ABR control of MSNA is modulated in a time-dependent manner. We suggest that this modulation of ABR function is one of the mechanisms underlying the progressive increase in blood pressure and MSNA during the course of isometric exercise.

Résumé :

Metaboreceptor activation during passive heating is known to influence cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) and sweat rate (SR). However, whether metaboreceptors modulate the suppression of heat loss following dynamic exercise remains unclear. On separate days, before and after 15 min of high-intensity treadmill running in the heat (35°C), eight males underwent either 1) no isometric handgrip exercise (IHG) or ischemia (CON), 2) 1 min IHG (60% of maximum, IHG), 3) 1 min IHG followed by 2 min of ischemia (IHG+OCC), 4) 2 min of ischemia (OCC), or 5) 1 min IHG followed by 2 min of ischemia with application of lower body negative pressure (IHG+LBNP). SR (ventilated capsule), cutaneous blood flow (Laser-Doppler), and mean arterial pressure (Finometer) were measured continuously before and after dynamic exercise. Following dynamic exercise, CVC was reduced with IHG exercise ( P < 0.05) and remained attenuated with post-IHG ischemia during IHG+OCC relative to CON (39 ± 2 vs. 47 ± 6%, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the reduction in CVC was exacerbated by application of LBNP during post-IHG ischemia (35 ± 3%, P < 0.05) relative to IHG+OCC. SR increased during IHG exercise ( P < 0.05) and remained elevated during post-IHG ischemia relative to CON following dynamic exercise (0.94 ± 0.15 vs. 0.53 ± 0.09 mg·min−1·cm−2, P < 0.05). In contrast, application of LBNP during post-IHG ischemia had no effect on SR (0.93 ± 0.09 mg·min−1·cm−2, P > 0.05) relative to post-IHG ischemia during IHG+OCC. We show that CVC is reduced and that SR is increased by metaboreceptor activation following dynamic exercise. In addition, we show that the metaboreflex-induced loading of the baroreceptors can influence the CVC response, but not the sweating response.

Résumé :

Previous work from our laboratory demonstrated that isometric handgrip (IHG) training improved local, endothelium-dependent vasodilation in medicated hypertensives [McGowan CL (PhD Thesis), 2006; McGowan et al. Physiologist 47: 285, 2004]. We investigated whether changes in the capacity of smooth muscle to dilate (regardless of endothelial factors) influenced this training-induced change, and we examined the acute vascular responses to a single bout of IHG. Seventeen subjects performed four 2-min unilateral IHG contractions at 30% of maximal voluntary effort, three times a week for 8 wk. Pre- and posttraining, brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD, an index of endothelium-dependent vasodilation) and nitroglycerin-mediated maximal vasodilation (an index of endothelium-independent vasodilation) were measured in the exercised arm by using ultrasound before and immediately after acute IHG exercise. IHG training resulted in improved resting brachial FMD ( P < 0.01) and no change in nitroglycerin-mediated maximal vasodilation. Pre- and posttraining, brachial artery FMD decreased following an acute bout of IHG exercise (normalized to peak shear rate, pre-, before IHG exercise: 0.01 ± 0.002, after IHG exercise: 0.008 ± 0.002%/s−1; post-, before IHG exercise: 0.020 ± 0.003, after IHG exercise: 0.010 ± 0.003%/s−1; P < 0.01). Posttraining, resting brachial artery FMD improved yet nitroglycerin-mediated maximal vasodilation was unchanged in persons medicated for hypertension. This suggests that the training-induced improvements in the resting brachial artery FMD were not due to underlying changes in the forearm vasculature. Acute IHG exercise attenuated brachial artery FMD, and although this impairment may be interpreted as hazardous to medicated hypertensives with already dysfunctional endothelium, the effects appear transient as repeated exposure to the IHG stimulus improved resting endothelium-dependent vasodilation.

Résumé :

(1) Background: Mercury is a threat for the aquatic environment. Nonetheless, the entrance of Hg into food webs is not fully understood. Macrophytes are both central for Hg entry in food webs and are seen as good candidates for biomonitoring and bioremediation; (2) Methods: We review the knowledge gained on the uptake and effects of inorganic Hg (IHg) and methyl-Hg (MMHg) in the macrophyte Elodea nuttallii found in temperate freshwaters; (3) Results: E. nuttallii bioaccumulates IHg and MMHg, but IHg shows a higher affinity to cell walls. At the individual level, IHg reduced chlorophyll, while MMHg increased anthocyanin. Transcriptomics and metabolomics in shoots revealed that MMHg regulated a higher number of genes than IHg. Proteomics and metabolomics in cytosol revealed that IHg had more effect than MMHg; (4) Conclusions: MMHg and IHg show different cellular toxicity pathways. MMHg’s main impact appears on the non-soluble compartment, while IHg’s main impact happens on the soluble compartment. This is congruent with the higher affinity of IHg with dissolved OM (DOM) or cell walls. E. nuttallii is promising for biomonitoring, as its uptake and molecular responses reflect exposure to IHg and MMHg. More generally, multi-omics approaches identify cellular toxicity pathways and the early impact of sublethal pollution.

Résumé :

This study compared the effects of lower- versus higher-intensity isometric handgrip exercise on resting blood pressure (BP) and associated clinical markers in adults with hypertension. Thirty-nine males were randomly assigned to one of three groups, including isometric handgrip at 60% maximal voluntary contraction (IHG-60), isometric handgrip at 30% IHG-30, or a control group (CON) that had been instructed to continue with their current activities of daily living. The volume was equated between the exercise groups, with IHG-60 performing 8 × 30-s contractions and IHG-30 performing 4 × 2-min contractions. Training was performed three times per week for 8 weeks. Resting BP (median [IQR]), flow-mediated dilation, heart rate variability, and serum markers of inflammation and oxidative stress were measured pre- and post-intervention. Systolic BP was significantly reduced for IHG-60 (−15.5 mmHg [−18.75, −7.25]) and IHG-30 (−5.0 mmHg [−7.5, −3.5]) compared to CON (p < 0.01), but no differences were observed between both the exercise groups. A greater reduction in diastolic BP was observed for IHG-60 (−5.0 mmHg [−6.0, −4.25] compared to IHG-30 (−2.0 mmHg [−2.5, −2.0], p = 0.042), and for both exercise groups compared to CON (p < 0.05). Flow-mediated dilation increased for both exercise groups versus CON (p < 0.001). IHG-30 had greater reductions in interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α compared to the other groups (p < 0.05) and CON (p = 0.018), respectively. There was a reduction in Endothelin-1 for IHG-60 compared to CON (p = 0.018). Both the lower- and higher-intensity IHG training appear to be associated with reductions in resting BP and improvements in clinical markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Objectives. Glucose fluctuations are both strong predictor of diabetic complications and crucial factor for beta cell damages. Here we investigated the effect of intermittent high glucose (IHG) on both cell apoptosis and proliferation activity in INS-1 cells and the potential mechanisms.Methods. Cells were treated with normal glucose (5.5 mmol/L), constant high glucose (CHG) (25 mmol/L), and IHG (rotation per 24 h in 11.1 or 25 mmol/L) for 7 days. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), xanthine oxidase (XOD) level, apoptosis, cell viability, cell cycle, and expression of cyclinD1, p21, p27, and Skp2 were determined.Results. We found that IHG induced more significant apoptosis than CHG and normal glucose; intracellular ROS and XOD levels were more markedly increased in cells exposed to IHG. Cells treated with IHG showed significant decreased cell viability and increased cell proportion in G0/G1 phase. Cell cycle related proteins such as cyclinD1 and Skp2 were decreased significantly, but expressions of p27 and p21 were increased markedly.Conclusions. This study suggested that IHG plays a more toxic effect including both apoptosis-inducing and antiproliferative effects on INS-1 cells. Excessive activation of cellular stress and regulation of cyclins might be potential mechanism of impairment in INS-1 cells induced by IHG.

Purpose of the study: This study aims to gain an understanding of how (and if) the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) manages knowledge to create value. Methodology: Publicly available data about the IHG were assessed using Pawlowski and Bick’s (2015) Global Knowledge Management Framework (GKMFW) to determine the extent to which the IHG is implementing knowledge management (KM). Four experts reviewed the findings for validation. Main findings: Knowledge management (KM) practices are used by the IHG at a basic level. Data collected in this study indicate that the IHG is not connecting KM processes in its strategy. This research highlights that the IHG and potentially other hotel companies could integrate KM to enhance their performance. Applications of this study: The study’s findings are important for hotel industry stakeholders (academics, hotel executives, owners, etc.), assisting them to better understand “hotel KM”. Stakeholders are encouraged to implement holistic and purposeful KM programs (i.e., a framework), potentially delivering more value to their organizations. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is the first attempt to investigate KM activities in one major standard-setting hotel company (SSHC), as defined by Boardman and Barbato (2008). It highlights the limitations in hotel-specific KM research and the limited way in which KM is being applied in the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). It not only identifies a gap in the literature about KM in the hospitality industry but starts to fill this gap.

Résumé :

Exercise-induced increases in skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA) are similar between isometric handgrip (IHG) and leg extension (IKE) performed at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). However, the precise effect of exercise intensity and level of fatigue on this relationship is unclear. This study tested the following hypotheses: 1) exercise intensity and fatigue level would not affect the magnitude of exercise-induced increase in SSNA between IHG and IKE, and 2) altering IHG muscle mass would also not affect the magnitude of exercise-induced increase in SSNA. In protocol 1, SSNA (peroneal microneurography) was measured during baseline and during the initial and last 30 s of isometric exercise to volitional fatigue in 12 subjects who randomly performed IHG and IKE bouts at 15, 30, and 45% MVC. In protocol 2, SSNA was measured in eight subjects who performed one-arm IHG at 30% MVC with the addition of IHG of the contralateral arm in 10-s intervals for 1 min. Exercise intensity significantly increased SSNA responses during the first 30 s of IHG (34 ± 13, 70 ± 11, and 92 ± 13% change from baseline) and IKE (30 ± 17, 69 ± 12, and 76 ± 13% change from baseline) for 15, 30, and 45% MVC. During the last 30 s of exercise to volitional fatigue, there were no significant differences in SSNA between exercise intensities or limb. SSNA did not significantly change between one-arm and two-arm IHG. Combined, these data indicate that exercise-induced increases in SSNA are intensity dependent in the initial portion of isometric exercise, but these differences are eliminated with the development of fatigue. Moreover, the magnitude of exercise-induced increase in SSNA responses is not dependent on either muscle mass involved or exercising limb.

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in pressor response and cardiovagal modulation during isometric handgrip exercise (IHG) between children and adults. Beat-to-beat heart rate (HR) and blood pressure were measured in 23 prepubertal children and 23 adults at baseline and during IHG. Cardiovagal modulation was quantified by analysis of HR variability. Mean arterial pressure responses to IHG were greater in adults compared to children (P<.05) whereas there were no group differences in HR responses (P>.05). Children had a greater reduction in cardiovagal modulation in response to IHG compared to adults (P<.05). Changes in mean arterial pressure during IHG were correlated with baseline cardiovagal modulation and force produced during isometric contraction (P<.05). In conclusion, differences in pressor reflex response between children and adults cannot be solely explained by differences in autonomic modulation and appear to be associated with factors contributing to the force produced during isometric contraction.

La seiche commune, Sepia officinalis, est un céphalopode côtier connu pour ses performances écophysiologiques soutenues par un large répertoire de comportements lui permettant, malgré son cycle de vie court, de tenir un rôle central dans les réseaux trophiques. Cependant, elle est également connue pour accumuler efficacement les éléments métalliques tel que le mercure (Hg), un contaminant neurotoxique sous sa forme organique (methylmercure ; MeHg). De plus, dans le contexte des changements environnementaux globaux, l’acidification des océans (AO) induite par l’augmentation des émissions de CO2, peut impacter le métabolisme, le développement et le système nerveux central, notamment chez les jeunes stades de vie. Le présent travail a donc pour but d’étudier les effets de l’AO sur la bioaccumulation du Hg et les effets de ces deux neurotoxiques (Hg et CO2) sur le comportement et les performances cognitives chez les juvéniles de seiches. Préalablement, des mesures in-situ ont montré que le Hg s’accumulait dans le cerveau des céphalopodes sous forme méthylé (MeHg). Par ailleurs, les approches expérimentales utilisant des traceurs isotopiques (stables et radioactif) du Hg ont démontré que l’accumulation du Hg total provenait majoritairement de l’assimilation du MeHg présent dans les proies, en comparaison à l’accumulation du mercure inorganique (iHg) par voie dissoute. Ce MeHg est ensuite très fortement retenu malgré la mise en évidence de processus de déméthylation du Hg dans la glande digestive. Étonnamment, l’AO n’a aucun effet sur les efficacités de la bioaccumulation et le métabolisme du Hg. En termes d’effets, des essais comportementaux ont montré que le Hg et CO2, seuls ou combinés, n’impactaient pas l’acuité visuelle et les performances de prédation chez les juvéniles. Par contre, ces deux derniers induisent une augmentation de l’activité locomotrice, compromettant le comportement défensif à travers notamment une altération de la coloration disruptive et un non-alignement de la latéralisation. Parmi les processus neuronaux susceptibles d’être impactés par le Hg et le CO2, le système GABAergique a été analysé dans les lobes optiques mais n’a montré aucun lien évident avec les réponses comportementales suggérant des processus d’effets plus complexes. L’ensemble de ce travail questionne donc les effets des conditions futures de l’océan sur les juvéniles de seiches, et plus largement les impacts sur les populations de céphalopodes
The common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, is a coastal cephalopod known for its eco physiological performance supported by a wide repertoire of behaviors that allows it, despite its short life cycle, to play a central role in food webs. However, it is also known to efficiently accumulate metallic elements such as mercury (Hg), a neurotoxic contaminant in its organic form (methylmercury; MeHg). Moreover, in the context of global changes, ocean acidification (OA) induced by the increase of CO2 emissions, can impact metabolism, development and the central nervous system, especially in young life stages. The present work therefore aims to study the effects of OA on Hg bioaccumulation and the effects of these two neurotoxicants (Hg and CO2) on behavior and cognitive performance in juvenile cuttlefish. In the first place, in-situ measurements showed that Hg accumulated in the brain of cephalopods in methylated form (MeHg). Moreover, experimental approaches using isotopic tracers (stable and radioactive) of Hg have shown that the accumulation of total Hg comes mainly from the assimilation of MeHg present in preys, compared to the accumulation of inorganic mercury (iHg) dissolved in seawater. This MeHg is then very strongly retained despite evidence of Hg demethylation processes in the digestive gland. Surprisingly, OA has no effect on the bioaccumulation efficiencies and metabolism of Hg. In terms of effect, behavioral assays showed that Hg and CO2, alone or in combination, did not impact visual acuity and predation performance in juveniles. However, both induced an increase in locomotor activity, compromised defensive behavior through, in particular, an alteration of disruptive coloration and a non-alignment of lateralization. Among the neural processes likely to be impacted by Hg and CO2, the GABAergic system was analyzed in the optic lobes but showed no obvious link with behavioral responses suggesting more complex effect processes. All of this work therefore questions the effects of future ocean conditions on juvenile’s cuttlefish, and more broadly the impacts on cephalopod populations

Expression of a productivity rearranged immunoglobulin heavy (μH) chain from a first in-frame VDJ_H-rearranged allele prevents further recombinant of the second, DJ_H-rearranged, allele, termed heavy chain allelic exclusion. I investigated at the single cell level the transcriptional status of both IgH alleles in ex vivo cells using RNA fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH). Prior to exclusion, in predominantly DJ_H/DJ_H-rearranged pro/pre-B1 cells, both IgH alleles are transcribed and detected by RNA-FISH. In contrast, following productive VDJ_H-recombination and μH expression i.e. in allelically excluded pre-BII cells, mono-allele transcription was detected in the 40% and bi-allelic in 60% of cells. This 40:60 ratio was maintained throughout subsequent B cell developmental stages. A V_H-specific transcription assay revealed a V_H(J558) transcription co-localising with mono- and bi-allelic μ transcription sites, strongly indicating transcription from VDJ_H-rearranged alleles in allelically excluded B cells. Combined RNA/DNA FISH showed detection of the V_H-D_Hintergenic regions in cells with mono-allelic μ-transcription. Within these nuclei the μ-transcription site and V_H-D_H intergenic region were clearly separate and thus do not originate from the same allele, thus suggesting a VDJ_H/DJ_H-rearrangement status. In the majority (>80%) of nuclei with two μ-transcription sites no V_H-D_H-intergenic regions were observed, suggesting VDJ_H/VDJ_H-recombination. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR revealed steady-state DJ_H-Cμ transcripts in splenic B cells, which have been allelically excluded at levels 2-3 fold less than observed in a developmental stage prior to exclusion. Thus the DJ_H-recombined allele is transcribed after exclusion. Our data show that the process of allelic exclusion results in diminished ability for RNA-FISH to detect the transcription of the DJ_H- but not the VDJ_H-rearranged alleles, indicating that the signal for allelic exclusion is received only by the DH_J-recombined alleles. Therefore, in allelically excluded cells, the DJ_H-but not VDJ_H-rearranged alleles alter their transcriptional activity and thus act as part of the mechanism for heavy chain allelic exclusion.

Os habitats de inovação são empreendimentos organizados sistematicamente para promover a inovação, propiciando a interação e a integração de diferentes atores. São fenômenos contemporâneos de grande relevância para o desenvolvimento de uma região ou de um país, pois operam com ativos de conhecimento. A implantação de um habitat de inovação implica, diretamente, no desenvolvimento socioeconômico e cultural da comunidade de seu entorno. Estes oferecem condições diferenciadas para desenvolver produtos e processos inovadores, com o propósito de fomentar as dinâmicas econômicas e sociais, locais e regionais, uma vez que tem a capacidade de reunir pessoas, tecnologias, recursos financeiros e conhecimento. A problemática levantada para esta pesquisa trata de como analisar as comunidades do entorno dos habitats de inovação em relação às suas necessidades, potencialidades e expectativas. O lastro teórico para esta tese está construído na intersecção entre os conceitos de habitats de inovação, parques tecnológicos, inovação, inovação social, tríplice e quádrupla hélice. O objetivo é elaborar uma metodologia para leitura e análise identificando, necessidades, potencialidades e expectativas das comunidades do entorno dos habitats de inovação. Esta pesquisa caracteriza-se como exploratória descritiva. Desenvolve-se a partir de uma revisão sistemática para levantar os conceitos básicos e um benchmarking para identificar práticas de leitura de entorno. Com estes elementos propõe-se uma metodologia de leitura de entorno desenvolvida em três fases: elaboração, prototipagem e aplicação. A elaboração constituiu-se em um instrumento online, que foi prototipada no entorno do Orion Parque, na cidade de Lages. A aplicação da metodologia para sua conformação foi feita no entorno do Sapiens Parque, em Florianópolis. Os atores envolvidos nesse processo foram gestores de 8 parques tecnológicos visitados, 10 gestores de organizações internas do Sapiens Parque, 201 gestores de organizações externas e 622 famílias situadas no entorno do Sapiens Parque. O resultado alcançado com este estudo foi a conformação de uma proposta metodológica adaptável para diferentes tipos de habitats de inovação, que possibilita realizar a leitura e a análisedo entorno desses empreendimentos, gerando informações que caracterizam o perfil da população local em relação às suas necessidades, potencialidades e expectativas. Com a aplicação da InHab-Read ? IHR ? Metodologia de leitura de entorno para habitats de inovação é possível orientar políticas e ações conjuntas entre a população do entorno e as organizações internas dos habitats, potencializando a interação entre todos os atores, e ampliando as dimensões dos processos de inovação tecnológica e econômica para a inovação social.
Abstract : Innovation habitats are systematically organized enterprises to promote innovation and provide the interaction and integration of different actors. They are contemporary phenomena of high relevance for the development of a region or a country because they operate with knowledge assets. The implementation of an innovation habitat directly implies the socioeconomic and cultural development of the surrounding community. These provide differentiated conditions for developing innovative processes and products to foster economic, social, local and regional dynamics as it can bring together people, technologies, financial resources, and knowledge. The issue regarding this research analyzes the communities surrounding the innovation habitats about their needs, potentialities, and expectations. The theoretical background for this thesis is built on the intersection between concepts of innovation habitats, technology parks, changes, social innovation, triple and quadruple propeller. The aim is to develop a methodology for reading and analysis, identifying needs, potentialities, and expectations of communities surrounding the innovation habitats. The study is characterized as descriptive and exploratory. It develops from a systematic review to obtain basic concepts and a benchmarking to identify surrounding reading practices. With such elements, it is proposed a methodology of environment interpretation developed in three phases: elaboration, prototyping, and application. The elaboration was constituted by an online instrument that was prototyped in the Orion Park?s surrounding, in the city of Lages. The methodology application for its configuration was developed in the Sapiens Park?s surrounding, in Florianópolis. The actors involved in the process were eight managers of the technological parks visited, ten managers of internal organizations of the Sapiens Parque, 201 managers of external companies and 622 families located around the Sapiens Parque. The result obtained with the study relates to an adaptive methodological proposal for different types of innovation habitats, which makes it possible to read and analyze the enterprises? surroundings, generating information that characterizes thelocal population profile regarding their needs, potentialities, and expectations. With the application of InHab-Read - IHR - Environment Reading Methodology for innovation habitats, it is possible to propose common policies and actions between the surrounding population and habits internal organizations, enhancing the interaction among all the actors, and broadening dimensions of technological and economic innovation processes for social change.

This study investigates how non-ing initial adverbials and adverbial ing-clauses regardless of position are translated from English to Swedish in a medical text. It discusses what different kinds of positions and forms they take in the translation. The primary source is a medical text that is translated wherein the non-ing initial adverbials and adverbial ing-clauses are identified and categorized, and solutions are discussed. The results show that most non-ing initial adverbials keep their form, but are changed in some cases because of stylistic preferences. The most common form of the non-ing initial adverbials is prepositional phrases that mostly also are translated as prepositional phrases. The adverbial ing-clauses, regardless of position, change their form in all cases in the translation and the most common correspondence is subordination. Both non-ing initial adverbials and adverbial ingclauses keep their position in most cases, but are sometimes moved due to stylistic preferences.

This PhD uses a queer reading strategy to explore the performative sites of lucha libre (wrestling in Mexico). My research inhabits the space behind the scene, the space between the ring and the audience, and the space of being part of the audience itself. My reading of the luchas takes place through the camera, the interview, printed works, theoretical investigation, and through the work of artists who draw on lucha libre – including myself. As lucha libre itself cannot be narrowed down to one specific medium, my subject matter allows me to utilize an interdisciplinary perspective to examine its various encounters, spaces, subjectivities and gestures. As well as attending live events in the arenas, watching lucha libre on television, exploring its circulation in artistic and filmic productions and its appropriation in advertisements and political discourse, I have carried out an intervention in a regular lucha libre programme by inventing a character, promoting, constructing and staging a match in an arena in the north of Mexico City. My methodology therefore makes use of a whole range of strategies including those borrowed from the discipline of anthropology and from practices of documentary making. Through my writing and my practice, I attempt to query and complicate these disciplinary conventions and my own use of them. I place particular emphasis in this PhD upon the possibility and use of a queer reading strategy in relation to lucha libre. Drawing on the works of Gloria Anzaldúa, Judith Butler, Judith ʻJackʼ Halberstam, José Javier Maristany, and José Esteban Muñoz, the thesis argues that a queer reading strategy has the potential to complicate ways of seeing gender and sexuality as well as race, ethnicity, class, time and space in this context. I identify the rich queer legacies within lucha libre, film and popular culture, and focus on the multiple and often conflicting readings made possible by adopting queer theory and reading practices. In doing so, the thesis interrogates the different ways in which popular cultures can go beyond accepted notions of what it means to be Mexican, a woman, macho, gay and so on. Throughout this work, I pay close attention to forms of audience participation, their verbal and gestural acts and how key these are in to the event of the lucha. These verbal and gestural acts, I argue, produce a unique complicity in the arena manifesting a transient trace of queer histories, and suggesting potential utopias.

ZusammenfassungRudolf Carnap hatte sich in seiner Jugend für Esperanto begeistert. Er erwähnt dies in seiner 1963 erschienenen Autobiographie. Genaueres wissen wir erst, seitdem seine Tagebücher und Teile der Korespondenz zugänglich geworden sind. Kaum hatte er die Sprache gelernt, nahm er 1908 in Dresden am Vierten Esperanto-Weltkongress teil. Es folgte die Teilnahme an drei weiteren Kongressen: Helsinki 1922, Wien 1924 und Genf 1925. Obwohl ihn danach vor allem die Sprachplanung in der symbolischen Logik beschäftigte, bewahrte er sich sein Interesse an internationalen Plansprachen, vor allem an Esperanto. Versuchen, etwa von Giuseppe Peano oder C.K. Ogden, ihn in ein anderes Lager zu ziehen, widerstand er. Zwar musste er spätestens nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg einsehen, dass Esperanto wenig Aussicht hatte, sich weltweit durchzusetzen, aber er fühlte sich ihm zeitlebens verbunden. Carnap hob die sprachliche Kraft des Esperanto hervor und den Nutzen und persönlichen Gewinn, den sein Gebrauch bereitete. Esperanto war für ihn Bestandteil seines Vertrauens auf eine friedliche, demokratische Welt. Bis zum Lebensende wirkte nach, was Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof, der Begründer des Esperanto, in seiner Dresdner Kongressrede beschworen hatte: die Annäherung der Menschen mithilfe einer Sprache, die an keine Nation gebunden ist.

Co-utilization of solid fuels with combustion turbines (CTs) can be accomplished by blending feedstocks in indirectly heated gasifier/liquifiers (IHG/L), Blending could improve the quality and yields of gaseous and liquid fuel outputs and, with gas clean-up (GCU) or liquid distillation, serve valuable societal functions. Gas yields vs. temperature, time and other variables have been obtained using batch fed and continuous fed laboratory scale IHG/Ls using particle sizes suitable for commercial systems. The rates of solids to gas/liquid conversion are mainly dependent upon the heat transfer and diffusion coefficients of the biomass rather than the rate constants for chemical decomposition. Phenomenological engineering formulas are developed for use with biomass that can be treated as a blend of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. The main immediate goals are to develop: 1) laboratory scale process development units (PDUs) that can help anticipate results with commercial IHG/L systems, 2) predictive models for estimating gaseous, liquid and char yields when various blends of biomass and other domestic fuels are processed in IHG/Ls and 3) applications of IHG-GCU-CT systems that could drive technology development during periods of low oil and natural gas prices.

This paper presents solutions to a one-dimensional solid-liquid phase change problem using the integral method for a semi-infinite material that generates internal heat. The analysis assumed a quadratic temperature profile and a constant temperature boundary condition on the exposed surface. We derived a differential equation for the solidification thickness as a function of the internal heat generation (IHG) and the Stefan number, which includes the temperature of the boundary. Plots of the numerical solutions for various values of the IHG and Stefan number show the time-dependant behavior of both the melting and solidification distances and rates. The IHG of the material opposes solidification and enhances melting. The differential equation shows that in steady-state, the thickness of the solidification band is inversely related to the square root of the IHG. The model also shows that the melting rate initially decreases and reaches a local minimum, then increases to an asymptotic value.

We present solutions for solid-liquid phase change in materials that generate internal heat. This problem is solved for both cylindrical and semi-infinite geometries. The analysis assumes a temperature profile in the solid phase and constant temperature boundary conditions on the exposed surfaces. We derive differential equations governing the solidification thickness for both geometries as functions of the Stefan number and the internal heat generation (IHG). For the cylindrical geometry, the solidification layer obtains a steady-state value which is related to the inverse of the square root of the IHG. The solutions to the semi-infinite geometry problem show that when the surface is cooled to below the freezing point, a solidification layer forms along the edge and begins to grow until it reaches a maximum, then begins remelt.

Résumé :

Imported oil, nuclear and coal now contribute about 55% of the energy the USA consumes, and those forms of energy are under environmental, social and legal scrutiny. There are limits to which non-“clouded” natural gas and renewables can replace these sources. This has motivated the CCTL to pursue R&D on blending domestically available fuels in thermal reactors to produce more useful gaseous or liquid fuels. Feedstock blending results with batch-fed indirectly heated gasifiers (IHGs) were reported at the three previous Turbo Expo meetings. This is a progress report on initial work with a continuously fed IHG scaled to potentially give a gaseous output suitable for a 5–20 kW microturbine or a reciprocating engine. An electric tube furnace is now used rather than a combustor fueled by the residual char or part of the gaseous or liquid output. Some novel features of this current effort are: a) Biomass blends are auger-fed through a reactor tube fabricated out of available components to simulate a conical shape, b) The output gas is filtered and partially cooled by the incoming biomass feedstock, c) The system has been designed to facilitate feedstock blending studies, d) A trap and external heat exchanger condenses the residual tar, water vapor, and volatile metals, e) The char-ash is collected and stored in a pressure vessel, f) Gas output volume is measured with an orifice dividing system and respirometer. The results of runs in a semi-continuously fed system with various biomass particle sizes and with various blends of biomass and coal are presented. The fate of volatile metals contained in the input feedstock is assessed. With the completion of an external hopper-feeder and the replacement of the electric tube furnace by an output gas or charcoal combustor, a later application to microturbines is within reach.

Vascular bypass graft failure is a significant clinical problem and is frequently due to the formation of intimal hyperplasia (IH) [1–3]. IH is characterized by the accumulation of smooth muscle cells (SMC) and extracellular matrix in the intima of the vessel, which occurs when the normal balance between vascular cell proliferation and apoptosis (regulated cell death) is altered [4]. The disturbed flow present at the anastomosis has been implicated in the formation of IH and the link between hemodynamics and graft failure is via a complex cascade of events whereby biomechanical forces cause biological responses [5, 6]. For example, immediate early genes (IEG) such as c-fos, c-jun and egr-1 are involved in the signaling pathways for proliferation and apoptosis. When extracellular biomechanical stimuli (e.g. shear stress) cause the expression of IEG, their protein products translocate to the nucleus. These proteins regulate the expression of a number of genes implicated in cardiovascular disease including growth factors, adhesion molecules, proapoptotic substrates and coagulation factors [7–9]. Because IEG are involved in both proliferation and apoptosis, their expression may upset the normal balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis and could play a vital role in the IH formation in vascular bypass grafts.

Atualmente muitos dados são produzidos e utilizados de formas que afetam a vida das pessoas, que por vezes têm dificuldade para enten- der os dados, processos e resultados derivados. Interação humano-dados (IHD) propõe incluir os Humanos no centro do fluxo de dados, promovendo mecanismos aos cidadãos para interagir com esses sistemas e dados. A IHD investiga como pessoas interagem com dados, analogamente à definição de interação humano-computador (IHC), que investiga a relação entre humanos e computadores. Em um contexto de crescente volume de dados, a IHD torna-se cada vez mais relevante, abordando questões sobre acesso da população leiga a dados e visualizações, a capacidade de manipular e explorar esses dados (em meios virtuais ou físicos) e entender o que está sendo dito, bem como limitações e viéses dos datasets que afetarão resultados e as representações apresentadas. Este workshop tem por objetivo fomentar uma discussão do tema de interação humano-dados e temas correlatos (ex: visualização, fisicalizações, literacia de dados), apoiando a formação de uma comunidade em torno do assunto, e traçando caminhos para pesquisas futuras sobre o tema. Haverá uma chamada de trabalhos e recorreremos a estes e às contribuições de convidados como ponto de partida para discussões.
