Mining equipment are becoming very sophisticated and complex. At the same time, mining companies modernise its operation by increased mechanisation and automation (Dhillon, 2008). That requires well-developed and planned maintenance strategy. A proper maintenance strategy and appropriate maintenance actions, are essential to keep equipment safe & reliable, decrease the overall costs, and it helps to eliminate workplace hazards. Maintenance strategies and maintenance actions, in turn, are changed and developed more than any technology (Moubray, 1997). Changing and developing of the maintenance can be due to many factors, perhaps due to the complexity of the systems or due to the development of the technology. One of the best research (developed technology) that has been done in this area is the research by Nowlan and Heap about Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) in 1978. RCM is defined as, “a zero-based, structured process used to identify the failure management strategies required to ensure an asset meets its mission requirements in its operational environment in the safest and cost – effective manner” (Regan, 2012). The RCM is one of the best powerful asset management strategies. RCM can be applied to any asset, nuclear power plant, aeroplane, or truck ship. According to (Nowlan & Heap, 1978), the main goal of implementation an RCM process is to provide the stated function of the facility with required reliability and availability at the lowest cost. In this master thesis, an RCM analysis process has been described in details. Moreover, two types of implementation approaches of an RCM analysis process have also been described. The intention of describing these two approaches is to see what the differences between them are and which one can be recommended for using in mining. The first approach is according to (Hinchcliffe & Smith, 2004) and the second approach is according to (Regan, 2012). Moreover, in this master thesis, there are also two case studies that have been analysed. The intention of analysing these two case-studies is to see how the RCM has been implemented. As a result of the research carried out in this master thesis, some basic streamline RCM analysis process has been recommended for using in mining. This recommended RCM analysis process could be applicable to be used in every industry section. The result of this work can be summarised that RCM is an applicable tool which can be used in mining for selecting the right maintenance approach for different equipment, systems or subsystem. RCM analysis process is discussed from different perspective. In the discussion, the misconceptions about the implementation of an RCM analysis process have been discussed. Altogether, Reliability Centered Maintenance is one of the most powerful asset management strategies that can be used in every industry section. If the RCM is applied by right people and by the right way, the result can be profitable for the mining companies.

Implementing institutional change over large institutions has been found to be extremely complex and difficult, with the literature showing very few empirically based examples of successful change over whole institutions. The research tested some of the variables mentioned in the literature as important for implementing and maintaining institutional change with four studies conducted over three different institutional organisations. In the first three studies, a criterion referenced teaching system, known as the 'Aims System', was implemented and maintained in two large institutions for people with an intellectual disability, and 5 residential hostels and one day centre for people with multiple disabilities. The fourth study involved improving the quality of the living environment in the same five residential hostels plus two day centres. Using a management by objectives approach with extensive involvement of staff, significant changes in the quality of life were achieved and these changes were sustained over two years of follow up. Areas targeted in this study were client opportunities, family involvement, staff conditions and changes to the bureaucracy. The four studies provided evidence of issues that need to be addressed when implementing and maintaining institutional change. However maintenance without continuing support was found to be a problem in the first three studies, even after years of operation of the new system. The fourth study suggested that if intervention began with a consideration of underlying principles and the system was built onto these, staff were more likely to internalise the system, making it resistant to degradation without the need for external support. It was proposed that successful long term change is a two level process, with an initial focus on principles providing a strong basis for other change strategies.

Asset management is getting increasingly important in nearly all fields, especially inthe electric power engineering. It is mainly due to the following two reasons. First isthe high investment cost include the design cost, construction cost, equipment costand the high maintenance cost. Another reason is that there is always a high penaltyfee for the system operator if an interruption happened in the system. Besides, due tothe deregulation of electricity market in these years, the electricity utilities are payingmore attentions to the investment and maintenance cost. And one of their main goalsis to maximize the maintenance performance. So the challenge for the systems is toprovide high-reliability power to the customs and meanwhile be cost-effective for thesuppliers. Reliability Centered Asset Management (RCAM) is one of the bestmethods to solve this problem.The basic RCAM method is introduced first in this thesis. The model includes themaintenance strategy definition, the maintenance cost calculation and an optimizationmodel. Based on the basic model some improvements are added and a new model isproposed. The improvements include the new improvement maintenance strategy,increasing failure rate and a new objective function. The new model is also able toprovide a time-based maintenance plan.The simulation is done to a Swedish distribution system-Birka system by GAMS. Theresults and a sensitivity analysis is presented. A maintenance strategy for 58components and in 120 months is finally found. The impact on the changing failurerate is also shown for the whole peroid.<br>Kapitalförvaltning har inom alla områdem blivit allt viktigare, speciellt inomelkraftsteknik. <p>In order to stay competitive, it is necessary for companies to continuously increase the effectiveness and efficiency of their production processes. High availability has, thus, increased in importance. Therefore, maintenance has gained in importance as a support function for ensuring, e.g., quality products and on-time deliveries. Maintenance, though, is a costly support function. It has been reported that as much as 70% of the total production cost can be spent on maintenance. Further, as much as one-third of the cost of maintenance is incurred unnecessarily due to bad planning, overtime cost, limited or misused preventive maintenance, and so on. In so, condition based maintenance is introduced as one solution for a more effective maintenance.</p><p>In condition based maintenance, critical item characteristics are monitored in order to gain early indications of an incipient failure. Research, though, has shown that condition based maintenance has not been implemented on a wide basis. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate how a condition based maintenance approach can be implemented in an industrial setting, and to develop a method that can assist companies in their implementation efforts. Further, the research has been divided in three research questions. They focus on: constituents of a condition based maintenance approach, decision-making prior implementation of condition based maintenance, and finally, the implementation of condition based maintenance in a company.</p><p>By using a systems approach and a case study process, how condition based maintenance can be implemented as a routine has been investigated. The result is an implementation method in which four suggested phases are presented. The method starts with a feasibility test. It then continues with an analysis phase, an implementation phase, and an assessment phase. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: implementing condition based maintenance consists of many general enabling factors, including management support, education and training, good communication, and motivation etc.</p>

Les fonctions fondamentales des protocoles de routage sont d'établir et de gérer une session entre deux hôtes et de la maintenir vivante autant que possible, même s'il n'y a pas d'échange des messages entre eux. En conséquence, deux hôtes devraient pouvoir communiquer à condition qu'il y ait un chemin entre eux dans le réseau. Afin d'assurer la connectivité, les protocoles de routage doivent offrir certaines fonctionnalités telles que la multi-session et le multi-homing. Néanmoins, ces protocoles ne satisfont pas leur fonction principale : maintenir une session réseau bidirectionnel sans erreur sur laquelle des messages sont échangés. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons un nouveau protocole de gestion de session, lequel nous appelons Managed Session Protocol (MSP). MSP est exécuté au-dessus de la couche d'un protocole de transport et il offre des services tels que la diffusion, le multi-streaming, les commandes multi-cibles et le multi-session. Ce protocole peut être utilisé par différentes applications, par exemple le protocole BGP peut bénéficier des fonctionnalités offertes par MSP. De plus, cette thèse présente les techniques de vérification et de test formel et d'analyse de performance mises en place pour, d'une part, valider les propriétés de correction de MSP, et d'autre part, valider sa mise en oeuvre. Pour le test, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode de test passive basée sur des invariants<br>The fundamentals functions or routing protocols are to establish and manage a session between two endpoints and keep it alive as much as possible even though endpoints do not exchange messages. Consequently, two nodes should be able to communicate as long as there is a path in the underlying network. To ensure connectivity, routing protocols need to provide some functionality such as multi-session and multi-homing. However, routing protocols nowadays do not adequately satisfy their main goal : maintain a bidirectional error-free session between nodes. This is due to the complexity of routing systems. Separating session maintenance from the individual router is one way to cope with this increasing complexity. In order to get around these problems, in this thesis, we propose a new session maintenance protocol called Managed Session Protocol (MSP). It provides services such as automatic restart of transport session when down, multi-session and multi-homing. As a result, MSP offers many advantages for upper layer applications (ULP). For instance, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) can use MSP in order to set up automatic multiple sessions between a pair of peers. In addition, MSP can be used without re-compiling or re-linking existing binaries and without making any kernel modifications. We have verified relevant properties focused on maintenance features of MSP by using model checking techniques. Moreover, we have used Linear Temporal Logic in order to design correctness claims. The manufacturing sector is of enormous economic and social significance to any state economy and its people. In the UK, the manufacturing sector accounts for about 13% of GDP and employs about four million people representing approximately 14% of the working population. Manufacturing processes depend on the performance of the facility (machines, equipment and tools) and the human resource (labour). These machines and equipment degrade with age and usage and, therefore, require maintenance. Despite the strategies adopted for their maintenance, there comes a time due to age, operating/environmental conditions and statutory requirements when the entire facility had to be shut down for necessary repairs, maintenance and project works. This is called Shutdown Maintenance also known as Turnaround Maintenance (TAM).Although several works have been carried out by organisations and professionals in recent times to optimize TAM projects, organisations are still struggling with TAM projects with reported alarming rates of failure. A preliminary literature review and pilot studies identified that the major cause of TAM project failures are attributed to the use of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) project management methodologies to manage TAM projects without considering their unique features. Findings from a comprehensive literature review, questionnaire survey and case studies in major process plants in the UK, were used to develop a unique best practice framework (and its components parts) which were validated by very experienced, proactive and industry-based hands-on TAM professionals. The conclusions which are drawn from this research study includes establishment of TAM evaluation criteria, TAM critical success factors, TAM manager selection criteria, TAM management methodologies and the TAM project implementation framework. This best practice framework which is a major contribution to knowledge in this area is recommended for all operators of engineering facilities to ensure the successful implementation of their TAM projects. The findings from the study are also of significant importance to contract organisations, TAM managers and aspiring TAM professionals, government bodies, training organisations and tertiary institutions who are involved in maintenance management in engineering facilities.

The growth of global competition has led to remarkable changes in the way manufacturing companies operate. These changes have affected maintenance and made its role even more crucial for business success. To remain competitive, manufacturing companies must continuously increase the effectiveness and efficiency of their production processes. Furthermore, the introduction of lean manufacturing has increased concerns regarding equipment availability and, therefore, the demand for effective maintenance. That maintenance is becoming more important for the manufacturing industry is evident in current discussions on national industrialization agendas. Digitalization, the industrial internet of things (IoT) and their connections to sustainable production are identified as key enablers for increasing the number of jobs in industry. Agendas such as “Industry 4.0” in Germany and “Smart Industry” in Sweden are promoting the connection of physical items such as sensors, devices and enterprise assets, both to each other and to the internet. Machines, systems, manufactured parts and humans will be closely interlinked to collaborative actions. Every physical object will formulate a cyber-physical system (CPS), and it will constantly be linked to its digital fingerprint and to intensive connection with the surrounding CPSs of its on-going processes. That said, despite the increasing demand for reliable production equipment, few manufacturing companies pursue the development of strategic maintenance. Moreover, traditional maintenance strategies, such as corrective maintenance, are no longer sufficient to satisfy industrial needs, such as reducing failures and degradations of manufacturing systems to the greatest possible extent. The concept of maintenance has evolved over the last few decades from a corrective approach (maintenance actions after a failure) to a preventive approach (maintenance actions to prevent the failure). Strategies and concepts such as condition based maintenance (CBM) have thus evolved to support this ideal outcome. CBM is a set of maintenance actions based on the real-time or near real-time assessment of equipment conditions, which is obtained from embedded sensors and/or external tests and measurements, taken by portable equipment and/or subjective condition monitoring. CBM is increasingly recognized as the most efficient strategy for performing maintenance in a wide variety of industries. However, the practical implementation of advanced maintenance technologies, such as CBM, is relatively limited in the manufacturing industry. Based on the discussion above, the objective of this research is to provide frameworks and guidelines to support the development and implementation of condition based maintenance in manufacturing companies. This thesis will begin with an overall analysis of maintenance management to identify factors needed to strategically manage production maintenance. It will continue with a focus on CBM to illustrate how CBM could be valued in manufacturing companies and what the influencing factors to implement CBM are. The data were collected through case studies, mainly at one major automotive manufacturing site in Sweden. The bulk of the data was collected during a pilot CBM implementation project. Following the findings from these efforts, a formulated maintenance strategy is developed and presented, and factors to evaluate CBM cost effectiveness are assessed. These factors indicate the benefits of CBM, mostly with regard to reducing the probability of experiencing maximal damage to production equipment and reducing production losses, particularly at high production volumes. Furthermore, a process of CBM implementation is presented. Some of the main elements in the process are the selection of the components to be monitored, the techniques and technologies for condition monitoring and their installation and, finally, the analysis of the results of condition monitoring. Furthermore, CBM of machine tools is presented and discussed in this thesis, focusing on the use of vibration monitoring technique to monitor the condition of machine tool spindle units.<br>INNOFACTURE - innovative manufacturing development

Referred to as the Maintenance Advisor Expert System (MAES) , this expert system is being jointly developed by the Naval Postgraduate School and Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC PHD). This thesis focuses on the long-term implementation issues related to deploying MAES to the fleet, integrating MAES into the formal training pipeline, and transitioning life cycle Support for MAES to NSWC PHD. MAES long-term implementation issues, which include hardware, software, documentation, and training requirements, are examined within the context of implementation factors and risks historically associated with deploying expert systems. Plans for deploying MAES to the fleet and integrating MAES into the formal training pipeline are provided. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), recently interests many major industrial companies, for the need to maintain the physical assets and the continuity of work. According to the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIMP), the (TPM) is based on eight principles: focused improvement, autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance, training and skills development, initial phase management, quality maintenance, TPM in Office, and safety environment. Through the implementation of those principles, an increased productivity can be achieved by reducing faults, improving quality, delivering times when specified, improving working conditions and raising the morale of the workers. This Research focused on factors and obstacles that effect this program. The research aims to design a framework that identifies the most important factors that affect the success of the application of TPM, as well as the tools and techniques that help in the application process. To determine the factors and obstacles when applying TPM, Libyan Iron and Steel Company LISCO has been selected as case study. This study analyzed impediments and obstacles to the implementation procedure and revealed key success ranked factors concluding with a conceptual framework for a successful TPM implementation along with the identification of tools and techniques to support implementing TPM. Also, TPM cannot be applied unless there is cooperation and coordination between the maintenance department and other sections of the company. Accordingly, this research also provided several recommendations, including the application of the concepts and principles of TPM in the company and make it the responsibility of everyone, and work in light of the proposed improvement plan.

The main purpose of this research study is to test the applicability of the DER (Degree of defect, Extent and Relevancy of defect) rating system, used for road network infrastructures, to the support structures of a dry cooling tower in a power generation environment. The DER is a defect-based rating system developed locally by the Built Environment Division of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. This study involved a visual inspection and the rating and analysis of defects of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in an Eskom power generation plant located in Grootvlei in Mpumalanga Province. Visual inspection and condition rating systems form part of an Asset Management System (AMS) that is used to ensure a safe operation and the economic benefit of the structure throughout its life cycle. For that reason, various organisations and roads authorities have developed condition-rating systems similar to the DER for visual assessment of their road network structures using a Bridge Management System (BMS) as a vehicle to achieve their operation and maintenance objectives. Other condition-rating systems have been identified and their applicability to structures in a power generation environment as compared to that of the DER was also tested. These condition-rating systems are: 1) The Overall Structural Condition Index (OSCI) - proposed by the Australasian Transport Research Forum (ATRF) for bridge condition assessment and prioritisation of maintenance activities and budget allocation. 2) The National Bridge Inspection Standard (NBIS) which establishes a uniform program for all state departments of transportation in the USA to regulate the minimum requirements for inspection types and procedures, inspection intervals, inspector qualifications, and inventory reporting, and 3) The Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM) which sets standards and provides uniform approaches for visual and detailed inspections and condition evaluation for all types of bridge structures in Ontario, Canada. Comparative rating analyses of the defects of the same RC structure in a power generation environment was conducted in order to establish the applicability of the DER in comparison with the other rating systems. This thesis is an effort to implement Reliability Centered Maintenance “RCM” for C20trains at Tunnelbanan Teknik Stockholm AB. In depth study is performed along withmaintenance team of TBT at center of excellence, a facility for maintenance workshop. RCM is a philosophy or framework to ensure efficient working of assets according todefined and required operating context. In general, the successful implementation ofRCM can achieve improvements through lesser maintenance, operating techniquechanges, and generating inclusive maintenance plan. RCM is also one of the best toolsavailable to identify and prevent equipment failures. Therefore TBT has decided tointroduce RCM to ensure effective services with great confidence and precision. The selection of critical system of C20 train was obligatory to initiate implementation ofRCM, and the door system was considered a very complicated system with maximumfailures that results in traffic disturbances and stoppages. Through literature study,depots & workshop visits, brainstorming engineers & train drivers etc, the requiredtasks to be performed were lay down. A template that illustrates details such as FMECA,risk analysis, current maintenance strategy and the recommended actions wasprepared and new maintenance regime along with the changes in work instructionswere proposed. The cost effectiveness as well as safety assessment was carried out.Moreover, the efficacy of RCM analysis is directly proportional to quality and accuracyof available failure data, and the proposed time scale for thesis was underestimated andthe reason behind was the convolution of CMMS as well as poor quality of failure data. The study results are officially approved by all stakeholders, i.e. SL, MTR Stockholm,MTR HK and TBT. This work can guide the officials to take imperative decisions foroptimization of maintenance practices, also the study for C20 door system can be theroadmap for comprehensive implementation of RCM at TBT Stockholm AB.

Construction and maintenance can have huge implications on the long-term functioning of GSI facilities. GSI facilities investigated were bioretention, permeable pavement, sand filters, infiltration trenches, and vegetated swales. This study first highlights the most important construction and maintenance items based on relevant studies and state stormwater manuals. Fairfax County, VA was used as a case study to evaluate the County's current stormwater program and illuminate common maintenance issues found for each GSI type. Data analysis of 3141 inspection records illustrated particular deficiencies for each GSI type and that there are differences between public and private facilities, most likely depending on site conditions and frequency of routine maintenance. Sediment accumulation was found to be the most common maintenance issue (27.8% of inspections), supporting the importance of adequate pretreatment and good housekeeping when implementing GSI. The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) performed a study surveying 63 public bioretention facilities in which they measured ponding depth, filter media depth, ponding area, and infiltration rates. The NVSWCD concluded that deficiencies found in facilities could mostly be attributed to inadequacies during construction. By comparing current post-construction inspections performed by the County to the NVSWCD data, it was found that these County inspections are failing to detect these inadequacies in bioretention facilities from improper construction. It is recommended that MS4s thoroughly record and track construction and post-construction inspection items to improve the longevity of its facilities and better inform future decision making regarding GSI.<br>Master of Science

Syftet är att få bättre kontroll och planering av förebyggande underhåll (FU) i framtiden. Programvaran som skall utvärderas om den är lämplig för ändamålet heter Tekla™ Maintenance.</p><p>Målet var att dokumentera allt förebyggande underhåll (FU) för två av tre liner i Lear Corporations fabrik i Torslanda.</p><p>Det visade sig att Tekla™ Maintenance uppfyllde de krav som fanns. De krav som fanns var bland annat när det var dags att göra ett förebyggande underhållsarbete ska programmet automatiskt tala om att nu skall det utföras. Ett användarvänligt gränssnitt var också efterfrågat. Rapporten innerhåller även en beskrivning av hur Tekla™ Maintenance är uppbyggt.</p><p>För att få en bild av hur det är att arbeta med programmet i verkligheten genomfördes en benchmarking mot Plastal AB. Plastal AB hade mycket goda erfarenheter av att arbeta med programmet och kunde därför varmt rekommendera det.</p><p>All dokumentation av förebyggande underhåll sker i dag på papper. Eftersom denna dokumentation inte innehöll tillräckligt med information skedde nedbrytningen från grunden. Varje line delades in i mindre områden så som line, kringutrustning och moment- och skruvdragare. När allt var dokumenterat fick underhållspersonalen tala om vad för slags förebyggande underhåll som skulle göras på all utrustning. Allt skrevs in i en Excel-fil som skall användas för att importera informationen till Tekla™ Maintenance i framtiden. Filen innerhåller över 2000 stycken objekt, vilket ger en bra grund för underhållsarbetet i framtiden.</p><br><p>This Bachelor Thesis deals with how to prepare a computerization of a Maintenance Management System. The Bachelor Thesis is written by commission at Lear Corporation in Torslanda, Sweden. The paper is divided into two parts: evaluate a software and document all preventive maintenance. The purpose is to get better control and planning of preventive maintenance in the future. Tekla™ Maintenance is the software that is going to be evaluated.</p><p>The aim is to document all preventive maintenance for two of three production lines at Lear Corporations factory at Torslanda, Sweden.</p><p>The research shows that Tekla™ Maintenance met the specifications. One of the basic requirements was to automate the management of prevention maintenance activity, by issuing work order. Furthermore a user friendly interface was required. A description of Tekla™ Maintenance is included in the report.</p><p>To get a feeling of how the programme perform in real world, benchmarking was preformed against Plastal AB. The benchmarking resulted in that Plastal AB recommended the Tekla™ Maintenance programme.</p><p>Currently the documentation does not contain enough detailed information to allow a thorough review of all production lines.</p><p>By dividing all lines into zones, all activities at each zone have been documented.</p><p>Feedback form the operators was given, about what type of preventive maintenance that is required.</p><p>To be able to put all the information into Tekla™ Maintenance, an Excel file has been made. This file contains over 2000 entries and should provide a solid base for future preventive maintenance.</p>

Sixty to eighty per cent of the software life-cycle cost is spent on the software maintenance phase because software maintenance is usually more difficult than original development and legacy systems are generally large and complex. Software reuse has recently been considered as a best solution to enhance the productivity of a software development team and to reduce maintenance costs. In addition, Software Configuration Management (SCM) is a central part of software maintenance as it is associated with changing existing software and is a discipline for controlling these changes. Thus, both software reuse and SCM have been proposed for making a significant improvement in productivity, quality and cost. However, so far these two technologies have been investigated separately. In order for software reuse and SCM to produce effects by synergy, both approaches require to be introduced into a maintenance environment together. Since software reuse and SCM, and software reuse and software maintenance have many similarities in their activities, these disciplines can be integrated within a software maintenance environment. This research has therefore developed an integrated process model for 'Maintenance with Reuse (MwR)', that supports SCM for a reuse library which is actively maintained for use in a software maintenance environment. This thesis addresses an integrated process model called the MwR model and its prototype tool TERRA (Tool for Evolution of a Reusable and Reconfigurable Assets Library) that consist of a configuration management (CM) process, reuse process, maintenance process and administration of a reuse library. The MwR model and TERRA provide reusers and maintainers with many activities of these four processes such as classifying, storing, retrieving, evaluating, and propagating reusable components, including controlling changes to both reusable components and existing systems. The process model of an integrated approach has been developed and validated using Process Weaver. The TERRA tool has been implemented on the WWW so that the prototype can provide portability, traceability, integration with existing tools, and a distributed maintenance environment. The TERRA prototype has been tested and evaluated through a scenario based case study. Several scenarios based on real data have been created and used for the case study so that an organisation can apply the model and tool to its maintenance environment without many problems. The software maintenance community is facing serious problems with legacy systems, such as a ever increasing frequency of changes and backlogs, lack of integrated tools and methods, and lack of software maintenance support environments. The control and management of changes to the software components in a reuse repository are crucial to successful software development and maintenance. If the component is being used in multiple systems effects of uncontrolled change are more critical. However, reuse libraries and servers currently available have not been successful as they do not support further development or maintenance of the reusable components. In addition, most of them are not sophisticated since they have not been linked to a development/maintenance environment. The integrated model of MwR can overcome many problems that exist in software maintenance and reuse through introduction of SCM functionalities into a maintenance environment. Thus, the integration of these common activities will greatly contribute to enhancing the productivity and quality of software, and will additionally lead to reducing the costs and backlogs of changes within a maintenance environment.

Most ES today operate in a 'standalone' basis, providing expertise in a specific domain. However, managers making strategic decisions on complex topics require the coordination assessment and evaluation of knowledge from multiple human experts. Standalone knowledge bases should be loosely or tightly coupled together to form a network of coordinated Distributed Expert Systems (DES). To facilitate this, a 'meta-ES' could be designed to access and control these distributed knowledge bases, thus providing users with a single entry point into a vast knowledge network. In the U.S. Navy submarine is constructed of compact, high energy systems, safety is paramount to prevent both personal injury and material damage during maintenance evolutions. The Ship's Duty Officer (SDO) is responsible for the safe and effective execution of all maintenance aboard ship. Thus, he needs to be knowledgeable of how maintenance on one system will affect the operation of other systems. Since the SDO requires many sources of expertise, automating a submarine maintenance process is an appropriate DES application.

The activities carried out in this project were aimed to improve the approach to maintenance for the CNC machine tools of the Machining & Maintenance section at CERN Main workshop.
The project started from an analysis of the past corrective maintenance interventions performed on the group of CNC machine tools on which the new maintenance plan will be applied.
According to the data retrieved from the first study and the requirements and boundaries of the project, the final choice has been to implement a preventive maintenance plan with a fixed schedule to the CNC machine tools.
The new maintenance plan is based on the machines manufacturers manuals that have then been tuned to meet the needs and the time schedule of the Machining & Maintenance section.
A full control of the geometry of each machine has been added to the normal maintenance procedure and it has been scheduled once a year.
The maintenance activities have been divided between machine operators, internal maintenance unit and external services, according to technical and safety knowledge needed for each activity.
The preventive maintenance plan has been organized and will be managed with a software already in use at CERN, this software is called Infor EAM and it allows to plan the maintenance interventions, assign them to the right unit or directly to the right person and also to keep track of the activities carried out, and generate official reports of the interventions.
At the end, a first calculation for the estimation of maintenance workload and costs has been proposed, but the quality and quantity of data need to be improved to have more reliable result in the future.

Inclusion is about the organizational change within schools to improve the educational system for all learners. It means changes in the curriculum, changes in how teachers teach and how learners learn, as well as changes in how learners with and without special needs interact with and relate to one another. The quality of leadership makes a significant difference to educator participation in accommodating all learners. However, for this we as educators must ensure that we are fully capable of delivering this service irrespective how old we are or what our qualification levels are. It is my objective to understand the role the school management team plays in facilitating the process of changes, as change cannot be forced and the fear of change must be acknowledged and faced. The qualitative research paradigm and more specifically the participatory action research approach, which is, applied research that treats knowledge as a form of power and designates with the line between research and social action particularly assisted me in answering my research question. xiv used to describe school management team members’ understanding and experiences pertaining to inclusive education and why they are procrastinating. After data analysis of the first step was concluded, the research established that the participant educators were not in favour of inclusive education and for that reason perceived it negatively. Educators are not enthusiastic about inclusivity. Step 2 was the action plan of my research study on which the school management team members decided collective as a method to restructure their thinking towards an implementation programme for inclusive education for their school. The researcher also reflected on the limitations inherent to this study and presented guidelines and recommendations for implementing and maintaining inclusive education.

For a tyre manufacturing company to compete nationally and internationally, the maximum utilization of their equipment is extremely important. Thus, having a maintenance system in place that will ensure this will be essential. In today’s competitive environment, the need to go further than just scheduling maintenance in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations as a method of improving productivity and product quality was quickly recognized by those companies who were committed to total quality management programmes. The objective of this study was to propose an appropriate strategy for the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance at Continental Tyre South Africa. To achieve this, the current Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) programme, in the steel stock preparation division in affiliated Continental plants in Otrokovice in the Czech Republic and Puchov in the Slovak Republic was evaluated. A comprehensive literature study was performed on Total Productive Maintenance programmes. A questionnaire was designed based on the guidelines in the literature study in order to establish the effectiveness of implemented TPM programmes. The researcher used the random sampling method of selection and distributed the questionnaire to 62 potential respondents via hand-outs from each plant’s respective heads of departments. 56 completed questionnaires were returned and these were processed and analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel 2003, running on the Windows XP suite of computer packages. The opinions of the various respondents were compared with the guidelines provided in the literature survey, in order to identify how to answer two main questions the author wanted to use as part of selecting an appropriate implementation approach for TPM at Continental Tyre South Africa. These were: • How much are the employees involved and empowered to perform their TPM tasks?; and • How effective is the implemented TPM programme? The following were the main recommendations and conclusions: • The experiences gained by plants like Otrokovice and Puchov must be used as a guideline for introduction and implementation; • The employees that will be required to perform the TPM tasks must be properly trained and they should receive the necessary tools to perform their tasks; • It is essential that everyone throughout the entire manufacturing organization is involved from the start in the development, improvement and maintenance of the TPM programme and that the driving force behind it should be a combination of maintenance, production and quality; and • TPM will achieve it’s objectives if: • The equipment effectiveness can be improved; • Autonomous maintenance is achieved; • Planned maintenance is in place; • Staff are trained in relevant maintenance skills; and • Early equipment management can be achieved.

Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) are environments that actively support human-human communication in addition to human-machine communication and which use the virtual environment as the user interface. The number of domains to which CVEs are being applied is constantly increasing, yet there are currently no standards governing the implementation of CVEs. Not surprisingly, most CVEs are proprietary to some degree, and are difficult to adapt to domains for which they were not originally designed. This dissertation proposes a set of abstractions common to many CVEs and presents an API named CORE (Creation of Reusable Environments) based on these abstractions for the implementation and maintenance of CVEs. Additionally, three case studies were undertaken to validate the API: a chat room, virtual classroom, and traditional multi-user dungeon (MUD). These case studies demonstrate typical uses of the API for creating CVEs. It is the finding of this research that a common set of abstractions can be identified across many CVEs and if harnessed within an API, the implementation of CVEs becomes more convenient and structured.

This thesis explorers the reasons for power shortage and the level of maintenance implementation in Iraqi power plants, furthermore, it examines the current organisational culture in Iraqi power plants, and its effect on maintenance implementation factors. Currently the active power plant units in Iraq are producing only 54% their designed capacity, which is in turn only supplying 50% of the countries’ demand. Therefore, to try and understand the reasons for this low level of efficiency, this research uses an exploratory sequential mixed method design, starting with semi-structured interviews (qualitative) with nine power plant managers or their representatives, followed by a questionnaire survey (quantitative), receiving 484 responses from the employees of those nine power plants. The reasons for power shortage in Iraq were identified, Furthermore, the level of maintenance implementation in the Iraqi power plants, was examined found to be at a medium level. In terms of organisational culture, not enough attention has been paid in the literature. This lack of research in the area of cultural effect on maintenance implementation was one of the main motivators for this study to answer the following question; to what extent do organizational culture profiles effect maintenance implementation factors in organisations. Structural equation modelling (SEM) technique was used to examine the relationship between organisational culture and maintenance implementation factors. Furthermore, based on the research findings, maintenance improvement framework was developed and detailed plans for implementation were formulated. The framework was built on the basis that improving organisational culture will improve the factors affecting maintenance and these factors will facilitate Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) implementation in Iraqi power plants.

Idag finns det inte tillräckligt underhåll på de 15 svamp- och bakterietankar som finns på AstraZenecas vattenreningsverk i Gärtuna, Södertälje. Företaget använder sig av avhjälpande underhåll där de väntar på att tankarna ska gå sönder för att sedan laga dem. Reningsverket vill skapa en underhållsstrategi på tankarna genom att ta reda på om livslängden kan förlängas eller om, och i så fall när, utrustningen behöver renoveras, uppgraderas eller bytas ut. I litteraturstudier undersöktes underhållsstrategier, vattenreningsverk och olika tillståndskontroller. Besök gjordes för att få en bättre uppfattning om hur arbetet på vattenreningsverket ser ut idag. Intervjuer hölls med chefen för vattenreningsverket, en erfaren drifttekniker samt två externa företag som jobbar med underhåll. I resultatet framgår information om vilka fel som uppstått, vilka åtgärder som vidtagits samt vad det kostat. Det framgår även hur underhåll kan ske med olika externa parter och kostnader för detta. Två olika tillståndskontroller, digital röntgenskanning och penetrantprovning föreslås för att upptäcka fel på tankarna. Efter analys av resultatet har slutsatser om en ny underhållsstrategi kunnat dras. Rekommendationer om hur den kan implementeras och lämpligt intervall har tagits fram. AstraZeneca föreslås gå från ett avhjälpande till ett schemalagt tillståndsbaserat underhåll, där tillståndskontroller utförs var tredje, fjärde eller femte år beroende på personalens bedömning och de rekommenderas också att använda sig av externa resurser när det kommer till tvättning och tillståndskontroller av tankarna. Avhjälpande underhåll är omöjligt att planera och kommer med vår lösning att minimeras. Schemalagt tillståndsbaserat underhåll som vi rekommenderar kommer resultera i en mycket enklare planering och oväntade kostnader likväl som oväntade stopptider kommer undvikas. Regelbundet underhåll kommer troligtvis resultera i att tankarnas livslängd ökar vilket bidrar till en bättre hållbarhet och man slipper köpa in nya tankar.<br>Today, there is not enough maintenance on the 15 fungal and bacterial tanks found at AstraZeneca's wastewater treatment plant in Gärtuna, Södertälje. The company uses a maintenance strategy where they wait for the tanks to fail and then fix them. The treatment plant wants to create a maintenance strategy for the tanks by finding out if the life span can be extended or if, and if so, when the equipment needs to be renovated, upgraded, or replaced. With literature studies maintenance strategies, wastewater treatment plants and various condition investigations, were analysed. The visits were made to get a better idea of how the work at the wastewater treatment plant looks like today. Interviews were held with the head of the water treatment plant, an experienced operating technician and two external companies working on maintenance. The result shows information about what errors occurred, what measures were taken and what it cost. It also shows how maintenance can be done with various external sources and costs for this. Two different condition investigations, digital x-ray scanning and penetrant testing are suggested to detect errors in the tanks. After analysing the results, conclusions about a new maintenance strategy could be drawn. Recommendations on how it can be implemented, and an appropriate interval have been developed. AstraZeneca should go from corrective to scheduled condition-based maintenance, where condition investigations are performed every three, four or five years depending on the staff's assessment and they could make use of external sources when it comes to washing and condition investigations of the tanks. Corrective maintenance is impossible to plan and our solution will minimize this. Scheduled condition-based maintenance that we recommend will result in a much simpler planning where unexpected costs as well as unexpected downtime will be avoided. This thesis is the continuation of a software project to develop a diagnostic expert system for the MK92 Fire Control System based on the daily system operability test (DSOT). The focus of this work is on the design and implementation of the calibration portion of the expert system using the Adept visual programming expert system shell. The calibration module is designed as a top-down hierarchy of cohesive, loosely coupled procedures. These procedures are linked through two-way links. This modular, structured design resulted in a compact system that is easy to read, modify, maintain, and test. Many of the logical troubleshooting paths are implemented using common procedures with variables, reducing application size and recognizing the expert's use of identical logic to isolate problems in different areas of the MK92 system. The calibration module fulfills the design and functional objectives set by the project team and project sponsor. Preliminary testing shows the module to be successful in MK92 DSOT calibration fault isolation.

The international competition and the demand to increase productivity of manufacturing and production lines have attracted the management of industrial organisations from a wide spectrum to implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) as a tool for improving productivity and system’s output. Some Libyan companies are still facing many problems concerning maintenance activities of assets. Inadequate maintenance can have cost impact on the maintenance performance and production. Following the privatisation of the Cement industry in Libya, companies are now interested in improving productivity, reducing cost, improving maintenance procedures and reducing the negative effect on the environment. To address the above issues within the Libyan industry, this research presents an investigation into the need for implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in Libyan cement industry. TPM is a generic maintenance philosophy that transforms maintenance activities from what is considered to be the 'necessary evil' into an essential part of the business. In TPM, maintenance and downtime is integrated within the production system and scheduled as an essential part of the manufacturing process. This thesis investigates the problems facing four cement factories in Libya. Following a comprehensive literature review around the research problem; case studies, statistical data, semi-structured interviews, detailed questionnaires and site visits are utilised to evaluate and understand the problems within the four factories. Based on the analysis, this thesis suggests a new Framework and associated models for implementing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and identifying the key Factors to improve the overall maintenance performance.

Il presente elaborato nasce dalla necessità di sviluppare una metodologia per la selezione e la scelta del Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) che meglio si adatta alle necessità aziendali.
Le innumerevoli funzionalità di un CMMS possono fornire una rilevante serie di benefici, a partire dall’aumento della sicurezza e della produttività del lavoro, passando per un netto miglioramento nella qualità dei processi e dei manufatti, fino ad arrivare ad una cospicua crescita del ritorno economico. L’impresa può godere a pieno di tali vantaggi solo se in grado di determinare chiaramente le proprie esigenze, quindi identificare, acquisire ed implementare il software CMMS più adeguato a sodisfarle.
Per supportare l’azienda nel raggiungimento di tale decisione si è scelto di applicare l’Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), tecnica di supporto alle decisioni multicriterio utile ad affrontare problemi complessi che prevedono il confronto di diverse alternative attraverso molteplici criteri.
Grazie all’utilizzo del software Expert Choice è stato possibile impiegare il metodo AHP per selezionare un CMMS tra quattro opzioni disponibili, quindi attraverso una doppia applicazione del modello, effettuata con variazioni nel numero di alternative e criteri considerati, si è giunti ad una soluzione finale.
In conclusione dell’intera analisi, l’elaborato fornisce alcuni suggerimenti specifici riguardanti l’applicazione della tecnica AHP e propone delle riflessioni sulla conformità del risultato ottenuto e sull’essenzialità dell’intervento umano nella valutazione dello stesso.

The organisation of maintenance, in the Aseptic Liquid Food (ALF) industry, represents an important management task that enables a company to pursue higher manufacturing effectiveness and improved market share. This research is concerned with the process to design and implement maintenance tasks. These two complementary processes (design and implementation) have been thought and designed to answer the particular needs of food industry regarding product safety and equipment reliability. Numerous maintenance engineering researchers have focused on maintenance engineering and reliability techniques highlighting the contribution of maintenance in achieving world class manufacturing and competitive advantage. Their outcome emphasizes that maintenance is not a “necessary evil” because of costs associated, but it can be considered an “investment” that produces an added value which generates a real company profit. The existing maintenance engineering techniques pursue equipment reliability at minimum cost; but in food industry, food safety represents the most critical issue to address and solve. The research methodology chosen is based on case studies coming from ALF industries. These show that low maintenance effectiveness could have dramatic effects on final consumers and on the company’s image and underline the need of a maintenance design and implementation process that takes into consideration all critical factors relevant to liquid food industry. The analysis of measurable indicators available, represents a tool necessary to show the status of critical performance indicators and reveals the urgency of a research necessary to address and solve the maintenance problems in food industry. The literature review underlines the increasing regulations in place in food industry and that no literature is available to define a maintenance design and implementation process for ALF and in general for food industry. The literature review enabled also the gap existing between theory and real maintenance status, in the ALF, to be identified and the aim of the research was to explore this gap. The analysis of case studies and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) available highlights the problem and the literature review provides the knowledge necessary to identify the process to design and implement maintenance procedures for ALF industry. The research findings provide a useful guide to identify the process to design maintenance tasks able to put under control food safety and equipment reliability issues. Company’s restraining forces and cultural inertia, that work against new maintenance procedures, have been analysed and a maintenance implementation process have been designed to avoid losing the benefits produced by the design phase. The analysis of condition monitoring systems shows devices and techniques useful to improve product safety, equipment reliability, and then maintenance effectiveness. This research aimed to fill the gap in the existing literature showing the solution to manage both food safety and production effectiveness issues in food industry. It identifies a maintenance design process able to capture all conceivable critical factors in food industry and to provide the solution to design reliable task lists. Furthermore, the maintenance implementation process shows the way to maximize the maintenance design outcome through the empowerment of equipment operators and close cooperation with maintenance and quality specialists. The new maintenance design and implementation process represents the answer to the research problem and a reliable solution that allows the food industry to improve food safety and production effectiveness.

Metadata is an important part of any Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Without proper and sufficient documentation of spatial data, resources are lost when pre-existing data has to be recreated or if data sets overlap. At the same time, creating and updating metadata can be a resource intensive task. Lantmäteriet seeks to optimize the creation and updating of metadata according to the new INSPIRE directive, as well as the Swedish National Geodata Strategy. INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) seeks to increase cooperation between nations in Europe through harmonization of certain spatial data themes, increased data and software interoperability, as well as the creation of a European spatial data infrastructure. INSPIRE lays the judicial foundation for this European cooperation. Sweden has been involved with INSPIRE since May 15th 2009. This thesis is aimed at developing the most optimal business process model for how the Swedish Mapping, Cadastral, and Land Registration Authority (Lantmäteriet) can create and update metadata according to the new INSPIRE directive based on best practice case studies and extensive literature review. The European Commission (EC) INSPIRE directive will be fully implemented in 2010. Furthermore, a survey of current metadata practices has been carried out to establish a starting off point for metadata creation at Lantmäteriet as well as a best practice business process model using ArcGIS Desktop.

In order to help meet these rates Boeing plans to increase the amount of automation in the shop that produces front and rear spars for all 737 variants. To mitigate risks associated with increased automation, the automation design team would like to implement an approach to equipment maintenance and operation known as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). However the justification for TPM was not clear and an implementation strategy did not exist. The focus of this thesis therefore, is to clarify the justification for TPM, understand how TPM could impact the production system, identify the barriers and enablers of TPM implementation at Boeing, and present a TPM implementation plan that will be appropriate and effective for the particular context in which it will be executed. An analysis of current maintenance data and practices, case studies within the current factory, and a qualitative analysis of the future production system suggest that TPM could provide many quantitative and qualitative benefits and that the new production system is a good candidate for TPM. Results from a discrete event model show that TPM poses minimal risk of disrupting the future production system. Results of an employee survey show that the most important factors to successful TPM implementation are related to planning and building support prior to implementation. These findings influenced the design of the TPM implementation plan presented in this thesis, which focuses initially on building support, planning, and training. As the airline industry adopts automated equipment in response to increased competition, TPM may become an important strategy for staying competitive. The multi-pronged analyses demonstrated in this thesis for justifying TPM, the survey method used to understand the company-specific barriers and enablers of TPM, and the method of designing a customized TPM implementation plan based on the insights from these analyses can serve as a general model for implementing TPM within Boeing and within the broader airline industry.<br>by David Michael Feliciano.<br>M.B.A.<br>S.M.

Thesis (MTech (Construction Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.<br>The standards of maintenance management of building facilities at many educational institutions, including tertiary institutions, need improvement. TQM has been proven to be effective in the improvement of quality in the maintenance of school building facilities, although many tertiary institutions are still grappling to implement TQM in the maintenance of their buildings. This particular research project investigates the extent of TQM practices; determines challenges experienced; determines success factors and establishes a framework that will ensure the effective implementation of Total Quality Management in the maintenance of tertiary institution buildings in South Africa.
A quantitative research design was adopted, where a questionnaire with closed-ended questions was distributed to purposively-sampled maintenance workers in a tertiary institution. A total of 54 respondents participated in the study. The study adopted a case study approach. Five CPUT campuses were selected as the cases for the research study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Data analysis was carried out by means of ranking; ANOVA test and Kruskal-Wallis test of association. The findings obtained indicate that all the TQM practices were implemented. Respondents perceived non-involvement of maintenance workers in decision-making as the most frequently experienced challenge during their building maintenance activities. A statistically significant different existed in the perception of workers’ affiliated campuses on TQM success factors. Findings revealed that TQM success factors were extensively practiced with respect to training and education of maintenance workers, use of statistical methods, and commitment to satisfaction to school stakeholders, as well as commitment from top management.
To improve the maintenance management standard of buildings in tertiary institutions and ensure effective TQM implementation during maintenance activities, the study suggests a framework that provides interventions in situations where significant differences were found. It also suggests nine factors to the CPUT Maintenance Department to ensure effective implementation or actualisation in the maintenance of its buildings. A further study to identify new trends in the application of TQM in the maintenance of school buildings by conducting continuous studies from time to time is highly recommended.

The purpose of this thesis is to implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in Nigeria Plastics Manufacturing Company. Manufacturing companies round the world pay huge amount of money for purchasing new equipments to boost their production however nothing or little is done to achieve or obtain full output from the machine for which it is intended to do. Small losses in time or deviations from planned or calculated capability are taken as usual machine performance. But currently as a result of improved capability levels and demand of quality product at lower prices, purchasing latest machine/equipment is not a way out unless it is completely used. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a method that involve everybody totally, from high management to all workers to implement a complete maintenance program for all machine/equipment during its life. This method ends up in most effectiveness of tools, equipment, virtuously improved workers, tidy up working area, neat and clean working environment. A structure is going to be developed with the potential of evaluating the impact of implementing total productive maintenance within. By evaluating the result or outcome of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), manufacturing companies can create sensible/smart decisions to improve the potency and standard of the machine, equipment and also the product on XYZ Plastics Manufacturing Company in Nigerian.
