Il ne s’agit pas ici d’élaborer une pédagogie ou même, modestement, une théorie de la poésie, mais de tirer quelques leçons d’un enseignement de la poésie — le point d’interrogation du titre est essentiel — qui a duré une trentaine d’années. On insiste particulièrement sur la différence qui existe et doit exister entre l’amateur de poésie, qui peut se satisfaire d’impressions vagues, et le lecteur de poésie, celui (l’étudiant) à qui s’adresse l’enseignement. Cette lecture exige (d’abord du professeur) une certaine violence, un arrachement aux impressions purement subjectives et au sens premier. La lecture de la poésie, dans cette perspective, est toujours une relecture. Pourquoi une telle insistance sur la difficulté ? Pour le plaisir, répond T. S. Eliot. Mais la culture de la poésie, par le poète lui-même et son lecteur, est aussi, selon Eliot, un devoir, un devoir de sauvegarde, d’enrichissement et d’amélioration de la langue.

Newly developed methods for evaluating subjective impressions of musical performances are introduced. Performances of the Promenades in "Pictures at an Exhibition," played by three musicians, were used as stimuli. In Experiment 1, the impressions of each performance were judged by the method of selected description. Three major factors concerning adjectives used to describe the subjective impression of musical performances became apparent. These were "dynamics," "tranquility," and "sadness." In Experiment 2, instantaneous impressions were judged by the method of continuous judgment by selected description, and its relation to the overall impression was examined.

This study is intended to quantitatively clarify the relationship between the motion characteristics behind the human motion in complicated motions like dancing and the subjective impressions of the observer. It examines the impression structures related to the motion of a determined body part of dancing and considers the motion characteristics giving a specific impression. To compare and consider the impression structures related to the motion of a body part, the authors made a principal component analysis, one of the multi-variable analytic methods, to check the arm and leg motions for any differences in the impression structure. Similarly, they considered any differences in the impression structures due to the experience knowledge of dance. Next, to consider any differences in the physical features that have effect on the impressions, they quantified the motion characteristics and used a heavy regression analysis to estimate the common motion characteristics that give the same impressions. In addition, they used the characteristics of the legs that are parts of the motion presumed to have the relationship with the impressions to reproduce the motion with CG for the consideration of these impressions. As a result, when the impressions of the arm and leg motions were compared, four impression evaluation axes of "like-dislike," "dynamic-static," "individual-monotonous," and "collected-wide" were extracted as the axes that evaluated the same impressions, but the impressions of "hard-soft" and "heavy-light" were extracted only from those of each arm or leg motion. When the evaluation axes of the impressions were compared between groups with differences in the knowledge of dance, five similar evaluation axes were extracted for each of them and there was no big difference in the impression structures themselves, but significant differences were found for the evaluation of impressions between the words used for the sensitivity evaluation in difference in knowledge. Attention was paid to the characteristics of the motion generating each impression to show the relationship between motion characteristics and subjective impressions.

Abstract In this article, the authors study the relationships between the principal impressions of crinkle-finished surfaces, which are found on camera exteriors, and the characteristics of test images of crinkle-finished surfaces. They extracted impression words for the surfaces through subjective experiments with humans. The results suggest that the impression is affected by five factors: two physical impression factors and three emotional impression factors. The surface images were obtained using a multi-angle measurement system that was built to collect images under various conditions. The authors used stepwise multiple regression to derive equations to predict the impressions of the surface given the characteristics of its test images. The results of the equations are highly correlated with the subjective scores of the five impression factors. These models will enable designers to design attractive crinkle-finished surfaces and camera exteriors.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of reproducing an ultrasonic sound above 20 kHz on the subjective impressions of water sounds using psychological and physiological information obtained by the semantic differential method and electroencephalography (EEG), respectively. The results indicated that the ultrasonic component affected the subjective impression of the water sounds. In addition, regarding the relationship between psychological and physiological aspects, a moderate correlation was confirmed between the EEG change rate and subjective impressions. However, no differences in characteristics were found between with and without the ultrasound component, suggesting that ultrasound does not directly affect the relationship between subjective impressions and EEG energy at the current stage. Furthermore, the correlations calculated for the left and right channels in the occipital region differed significantly, which suggests functional asymmetry for sound perception between the right and left hemispheres.

The influence of acoustic characteristics of in-flight noise on airplane operations and sound impression has been investigated through objective and subjective measure including the flight simulation. The authors verified the influence of the noise conditions including seven conditions, in which the sound pressure levels and frequency characteristics of them were parametrically changed, on the airplane operations using shortterm flight simulation. Resultantly, the change of the sound pressure levels of the in-flight noise did not greatly affect the operation accuracy although clearly affected the subjective impressions. On the other hand, it has been suggested that the change of the frequency characteristics of in-flight noise affected not only the subjective impressions but also the operation accuracy.

The aim of the study is to investigate the polymerization inhibition of elastomeric impression materials vinylpoly siloxane (VPS) and polyether (PE) when used in combination with retraction materials with and without subsequent cleaning with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Methods: Seven stainless steel specimens were fabricated. Four hundred and twenty impressions were made with three different elastomeric materials (140 each) as follows: group 1: VPS-Panasil; group 2: VPS-Express; group 3: PE-Monophase. Each material group was further subdivided into seven subgroups, based on use of no retraction material (control), three different retraction materials [Retraction capsule (RC3M), Dryz, Expasyl], and two cleaning techniques (water and H2O2). All subgroups included 20 impressions, which were made by a single operator using an automix gun. Evaluations were made using a visual scale by three calibrated examiners blindly and independently. Subjective categorization of the impressions were made as inhibited and uninhibited. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test and significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Inhibited impressions were lower than uninhibited impressions among VPS materials (Panasil and Express); Panasil and Express showed comparable ( p > 0.05) impression retardation. PE showed significantly higher inhibition compared to VPS materials ( p < 0.05). Expasyl showed significantly higher polymerization inhibition than other retraction materials ( p < 0.05). The use of H2O2 for cleaning showed significant reduction in polymerization inhibition than cleaning with water for Expasyl ( p < 0.05). Conclusion: Overall contemporary retraction materials showed low potential for polymerization inhibition of elastomeric impression materials. Expasyl should be cleaned with H2O2 prior to impression making. However, Dryz and RC3M can show accurate impressions with water cleaning alone.

The ear molds and shells of hearing devices are generally designed using ear impressions. Computed tomography (CT) can provide information concerning ear structure, which can be utilized in computer-aided design to create hearing devices. This study aimed to compare the differences in hearing devices designed using either ear impressions or CT images. The ear chip of a cartilage conduction (CC) hearing device was designed based on the ear impression and CT images of patients with aural atresia. Three patients with bilateral (n = 1) or unilateral (n = 2) aural atresia participated in this study. The aided thresholds and subjective evaluations were compared. There were no serious problems with the use of either device, and no remarkable differences were observed regarding their respective audiological and subjective benefits. Regarding the subjective patient preferences, the hearing aid with the device designed via CT imaging was better in three ears of two patients, whereas the wearing comfort of the transducer was better for the device designed via the ear impression. The subjective evaluation of appearance varied among the cases. Finally, a device that was designed using CT findings was purchased for one patient. CT images can be utilized in computer-aided design to create CC hearing devices.

The objective of this study was to develop a product evaluation method applicable to virtual prototypes and to apply the method to automobile interior design. Considering that virtual reality-based product prototypes could represent design alternatives comparable to physical prototypes, prototypes developed in virtual reality environments were employed as design alternatives. After a procedure to evaluate virtual prototypes was developed specifically for a virtual reality environment, the procedure was applied to the problem of automobile interior design. 34 subjects evaluated 32 different virtual prototypes generated from the combination of design element variations. Four categories of subjective impression were used to evaluate the 32 virtual prototypes: luxuriousness, comfort, harmoniousness, and controllability. ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to specify design elements critical to customer preference and to interpret the relationship between design elements and subjective impressions. As the result, the shapes of frontal area including crash pad and center fascia, door trim and steering wheel were selected as important variables related to subjective impressions. The proposed evaluation method for virtual prototypes could be utilized as an alternative way of identifying the relationship between subjective impressions and design elements.

Cette thèse s’inscrit au croisement des domaines des ambiances lumineuses, de la pédagogie architecturale, de la perception et de l’immersion. Elle se concentre principalement sur la conception et la mise en oeuvre d’une nouvelle méthodologie expérimentale ayant pour but d’évaluer la capacité des photographies statiques omnidirectionnelles stéréoscopiques HDR, projetées dans un casque immersif, à restituer fidèlement des impressions subjectives d’ambiances lumineuses vécues dans des architectures de référence. Une attention particulière est accordée à l’influence des opérateurs de mappage de tons (TMOs). La méthodologie développée comprend plusieurs étapes : la constitution d’une grille d’analyse des ambiances lumineuses de lieux remarquables basée sur des propos d'experts ; la mise en place d’une méthode de collecte de données in situ pour l’évaluation des ambiances lumineuses (questionnaire, relevés lumineux, captationsphotographiques omnidirectionnelles HDR) ; et la mise en place d’une méthode d’évaluation des ambiances lumineuses dans un casque immersif. Les résultats fournissent des connaissances sur les caractéristiques des ambiances lumineuses in situ de sept architectures remarquables et sur la fidélité de perception de chaque impression d’ambiance lumineusedans le casque immersif en fonction des TMOs. Ils mettent également en évidence le lien entre les impressions sélectionnées par les propos d’experts et celles évaluées in situ et dans le casque immersif. Ces connaissances sont utiles pour des applications pédagogiques futures en architectureThis thesis is at the crossroads of the fields of luminous atmospheres, architectural pedagogy, perception and immersion. It focuses on the design and implementation of a new experimental methodology for evaluating the ability of HDR stereoscopic omnidirectional static photographs, projected in an immersive Head-Mounted Display (HMD), to faithfully reproducesubjective impressions of luminous atmospheres experienced in reference architectural places. Specific consideration is given to the impact of tone mapping operators (TMOs). Our methodology involves several steps: designing a grid for analyzing the luminous atmospheres of iconic places based on expert judgement; implementing in situ data collection to assess luminous atmospheres (questionnaire, light measurements, HDR omnidirectional photographic recordings), and implementinga method for assessing luminous atmospheres in an HMD. The results provide knowledge about the characteristics of the in situ luminous atmospheres of seven iconic buildings and the perceptual fidelity of each luminous atmosphere’s impression in the HMD, depending on the TMOs. The findings also highlight the relationship between the impressions selected by the experts and those assessed in situ and in the HMD. This knowledge is useful for future pedagogical applications in architecture

Cities and spaces are often examined with a focus on amenities or attributes that can be quantified or explained through patterns and movements by people. There are even numerous apps and services (Yelp, FourSquare, Google Maps to name a few) that provide platforms for adults to express their subjective feelings and opinions about restaurants, bars, landmarks, and public places, but as researchers have shown', these apps don't quite capture the full picture of meaningful places or spaces for people. Consequently, urban planners and architects designing cities take a specific, commercial viewpoint into perspective, with a bias towards the response of professional adults. As adults are not the only population living in cities, it is important and interesting to understand how people of different ages and socioeconomic classes-children, teenagers, and adults-and with different goals-learning, having fun, working-perceive the city and spaces around them in contrast or similarly to each other. This thesis uses Kendall and Harvard Squares to explore methodologies intended to capture the subjective perspectives and impressions of the city by children and adults alike. Specifically, methodologies that could elicit responses about perception relating to memory, culture, state of mind, and social interactions were explored. Participants were given a series of descriptive words and were asked to record an image in the Square that matched the word. They were also asked to express their impressions of places with their own words and playfulness. The results of the methodologies helped to form potential larger scale studies that would provide a deeper view of how a wider cross-section of the population perceive the city in terms of spaces they find creative, inspirational, and playful. Ultimately, this research seeks to understand the intangible qualitative perception of people in spaces and cities.

Exposés à un message sur un risque, les individus traitent l'information de manière systématique et biaisée en faveur de soi. La littérature sur la persuasion a identifié des facteurs modérateurs comme l'implication personnelle ou le fait de posséder des connaissances dans le domaine. L'hypothèse est que l'impression subjective de posséder des connaissances est une condition suffisante pour limiter le biais. L'impression subjective état manipulée au moyen d'un questionnaire de connaissances plus ou moins facile (5 expériences), et selon la facilité de rappel (2 expériences). Les connaissances évaluées portaient sur le SIDA et les messages portaient sur le SIDA, l'Hépatite B et la Sclérose en plaque. Quand les individus ont l'impression de posséder beaucoup de connaissances (condition facile), ils traitent plutôt de façon moins défensive les arguments du message (tâche de listage d'idées). Lorsqu'ils ont l'impression de posséder peu de connaissances (condition difficile), ils traitent de façon plus défensive (en faveur de soi) les informations, et sous-estiment leur risque personnelWhen people are exposed to a risk message, they exhibit a biased systematic processing of the message. Following research in persuasion, personal relevance or prior knowledge moderate this effect. Subjective experience of having knowledge was hypothesized to be a sufficient condition to moderate a biased systematic processing. Subjective experience was manipulated by low vs. High difficulty of a questionnaire about risk (5 experiments) and by ease of retrieval (2 experiments). Assessment of knowledge was about AIDS and messages were about AIDS, Hepatitis B and multiple Sclerosis. When people experiment success (low difficulty condition), they process less defensively the message arguments (though listing task). When they experiment a lack of knowledge (high difficulty condition), they process more defensively and underestimate their personal risk

The relationship between Objective Metrics (OM) and Subjective Assessments (SA) has been analyzed by people using different methods. This paper continues Gaspar Gil Gómez’s research over test method development by use of SOM-GRNN, aiming to find correlations between OM and SA. In this paper, CAE simulation is performed to analyze the relationship between OM and vehicle parameters. First impression test is refined and one more dataset has been added in order to populate SOM-GRNN map. This paper also conducts analysis over SOM and GRNN algorithms, and explores several possible applications using SOM-GRNN map. Finally the whole SOM-GRNN system is integrated and a User Interface is built in GUI for future research and application. The system can still be improved by populating database, refining SA evaluation method and optimizing SOM-GRNN training algorithms.Relationen mellan målmetri (OM) och subjektiv bedömning (SA) har analyserats av personer som använder olika metoder. I detta dokument fortsätter Gaspar Gil Gómezs forskning kring testmetodutveckling med hjälp av SOM-GRNN, som syftar till att finna korrelationer mellan OM och SA. I detta papper utförs CAE-simulering för att analysera förhållandet mellan OM och fordonsparametrar. Första intryckstestet är raffinerat och ytterligare en dataset har lagts till för att fylla i SOM-GRNN-kartan. I detta dokument analyseras även SOM- och GRNN-algoritmer, och undersöker flera möjliga tillämpningar med hjälp av SOM-GRNN kartan. Slutligen är hela SOM-GRNN-systemet integrerat och ett användargränssnitt är byggt i GUI för framtida forskning och tillämpning. Systemet kan fortfarande förbättras genom att fylla i databasen, förädla SA utvärderingsmetod och optimera SOM-GRNN träningsalgoritmer.

In order to building a spoken or written text, regardless of gender that it is being carried out, the speaker uses linguistic features such as semantic-argumentative strategies intending to guide the interlocutor to certain conclusions. The modalization and polyphony, accordingly, are phenomena that allow the speaker to leave printed his subjectivity in the content of the statements, while acting according to his interlocutor. Focusing in these discussions, this investigation aims to show that modalization and polyphony reveal, linguistically, subjectivity in the digest genre, acting therefore as argumentation features. It is a qualitative research, descriptive and interpretative, which adopts the theoretical and methodological principles of Argumentative Semantics. The corpus consists of ten digests collected in six editions of the Jornal de Resenhas, of the Discurso Editorial, ISSN 1984-6282, published in 2009, 2010 and 2012. The theoretical discussions concerning the Argumentation Theory of Language have based in Ducrot (1994, 1987, 1988), Espíndola (2004), Nascimento (2005, 2009), Koch (2006a, 2006b) and others arguing about the theory approach. The modalization is discussed under the postulates of Castilho and Castilho (1993), Koch (2006b), Cervoni (1989), Nascimento (2009), Neves (2011a), Palmer (2011) and García Negroni (2011). Besides, it was used as theoretical basis, Foucault (2011), Bakhtin (2010a, 2010b), Marcuschi (2008) and others to the formulations about the digest genre. The analysis reveals that digesters use modalization and the polyphony of speakers as phenomena that ultimately report the speakers‟ subjectivity in relation to the view of the voices of other speakers, that is, as a discursive strategy that guides the way the text of the digest should be read. Thus, the gender digest is defined as a place of interaction of voices and subjective impressions through which the speaker summarizes praises, criticizes and evaluates the most diverse academic intellectual productions.
Pour construire un texte parlé ou écrit, indépendamment du genre qui réalise, le locuteur utilise des fonctionnalités linguistiques comme les stratégies sémantiques argumentatif afin de guider les appelants à certaines conclusions. La modalisation et la polyphonie, en conséquence, sont des phénomènes qui permettent au locuteur laisser imprimé sa subjectivité dans le contenu des déclarations, tout en agissant en fonction de son interlocuteur. Avec l'accent dans ces discussions, cette recherche vise à ètidier les annonceurs de modalité et de la polyphonie, comme des phénomènes qui révèlent, linguistiquement, la subjectivité dans le genre compte-rendu, s‟agissant, de cette manière, comme des marques d'argumentation. Il est une recherche qualitative, descriptive et interprétative, qui adopte les principes théoriques et méthodologiques de la sémantique argumentative. Le corpus se compose de dix comptes-rendus dans six éditions du Jornal de Resenhas, imprimés par Discurso Editorial, ISSN 1984-6282, publiés en 2009, 2010 et 2012. Pour les discussions théoriques en concernant a la Théorie de L'argumentation de la Langue, nous fundamentons-nous en Ducrot (1994, 1987, 1988), Espíndola (2004), Nascimento (2005, 2009), Koch (2006a, 2006b) et d'autres qui discutent à propos de l'approche de la théorie. La modalisation est discuté sous les postulats de Castilho et Castilho (1993), Koch (2006b), Cervoni (1989), Nascimeto (2009), Neves (2011a), Palmer (2011) et García Negroni (2011). Et on utilise encore comme une base théorique, Foucault (2011), Bakhtin (2010a, 2010b), Marcuschi (2008) et d'autres pour les formulations sur la révision de genre. L'analyse révèle que les examinateurs utilisent la modalisation et la polyphonie des haut-parleurs comme des phénomènes qui relèvent finalement la subjectivité des intervenants des examens par rapport à la vue de la voix des autres orateurs, qui est, comme une stratégie qui guide discoursivement le chemin du texte de comme l'avis doit être lu. Le genre compte-rendu, dans cette recherche est considérée comme un lieu d'interaction des voix et impressions subjectives ainsi à travers laquelle l'orateur résume louanges, critique et évalue plus diverses productions intellectuelles academiques.
Ao construir um texto falado ou escrito, independente do gênero que o realize, o locutor se utiliza de recursos linguísticos como estratégias semântico-argumentativas com a finalidade de orientar o interlocutor para determinadas conclusões. A modalização e a polifonia, nesse sentido, são fenômenos que possibilitam ao locutor deixar impressa a sua subjetividade no conteúdo dos enunciados, ao mesmo tempo em que age em função de seu interlocutor. Com o foco nessa discussão, esta pesquisa objetiva investigar a modalização e a polifonia de locutores como fenômenos que revelam, linguisticamente, a subjetividade no gênero resenha acadêmico-científica, funcionando, portanto, como marcas de argumentação. Trata-se de uma investigação qualitativa, de caráter descritivo e interpretativista, que adota os princípios teórico-metodológicos da Semântica Argumentativa. O corpus é constituído de dez resenhas, coletadas em seis edições do Jornal de Resenhas, da Discurso Editorial, ISSN 1984-6282, publicadas nos anos de 2009, 2010 e 2012. Para as discussões teóricas concernentes à Teoria da Argumentação na Língua, embasamo-nos em Ducrot (1994, 1987, 1988), Espíndola (2004), Nascimento (2005, 2009), Koch (2006a, 2006b) entre outros que discutem a respeito da teoria em abordagem. A modalização é discutida sob os postulados de Castilho e Castilho (1993), Koch (2006b), Cervoni (1989), Nascimento (2009), Neves (2011a), Palmer (2011) e García Negroni (2011). Ainda servem de embasamento teórico, Foucault (2011), Bakhtin (2010a, 2010b), Marcuschi (2008) e outros, para as formulações acerca do gênero textual resenha. As análises revelam que os resenhistas utilizam a modalização e a polifonia de locutores como fenômenos que acabam por denunciar a subjetividade dos locutores das resenhas em relação ao ponto de vista das vozes de outros locutores, ou seja, como uma estratégia que orienta discursivamente a forma como o texto da resenha deve ser lido. O gênero resenha, nesta investigação, é visto como um lugar de interação de vozes e, portanto, de impressões subjetivas, através do qual o locutor resume, elogia, critica e avalia as mais diversas produções intelectuais acadêmicas.

Background and objective: Acquiring 3D digital images through “Digital Intra-oral Impression” to produce dental crowns is the latest promising future. However, the high cost and low prevalence of the equipment made it unacceptable for the majority of domestic dentists. Intra-oral scanner system still under continuous developing and become more popular which deserved further study for its clinical results. This study analyzes the subjective perception of dental clinical patients and impression discrepancy toward conventional and digital intraoral impression and discussion on the relationship between them. In further, providing the user’s clinical evaluation as advice for dentists. Materials & Methods: There were thirty subjects participated in this study. Subjects were asked to estimate their subjective perception before and after receiving the conventional and digital impression from a dentist. Then measuring the discrepancies between two different methods of the impression. The final part, all the measurement data were analyzed statistically by paired t-test, repeated measures two-way ANOVA, Kolmogorov- Smirnov test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Result: There were thirty subjects participated in this study (27.77±8.19 years old in average, 17 males, 13 females). Over all, there was a statistically significant difference in most subjects’ perception. Most subjects prefer digital impression. In addition, gender affects the negative feelings between two different impression procedures. After measuring the discrepancy of scan results, we found that lingual aspect has more discrepancy than other aspects. The analysis suggested that no association between subjective perception and discrepancy. Conclusion: Through our study, it is proven digital intra-oral impression improves the uncomfortable feeling and reduce the tension of conventional impression method. However, lingual aspect has more inaccuracy on digital impression. Finally, the subjective perception has no association with the impression discrepancy.

This chapter examines Ray Bradbury's emerging sense of critical judgment toward literary work. Bradbury had trouble maintaining objectivity in assessing an author's work. For Bradbury, literary work is the expression of the author, and one cannot be separated from the other. His literary criticism involved looking for a glimpse of the author's soul in every word he read, and this is evident in his treatment of writers such as Ernest Hemingway and Aldous Huxley. This chapter considers how Bradbury came to understand some aspects of the great turn-of-the-century changes in American literature that led from romanticism to realism and on to the more subjective experiments of Modernism, as well as the earlier but parallel transitions in modern art into subjective forms like impressionism, expressionism, and surrealism. It also discusses Bradbury's reading of Frederic Prokosch's novels The Asiatics (1935) and The Seven Who Fled (1937), and especially the former influence on his fanzine tale “The Piper”.

Within the framework of the embodiment of time, this chapter presents accumulating evidence of how interoception and associated brain networks process time. Functional MRI studies have shown that climbing neural activation in the posterior insular cortex correlates with stimulus duration in a time-estimation task in the multiple-second range. Given the close connection between the insular cortex and ascending body signals, the authors suggest that the accumulation of physiological changes in body states is the basis for the subjective impression of duration. Psychophysiological findings reveal linearly increasing cardiac periods and decreasing skin-conductance levels during duration-estimation tasks in the multiple-second range. Accordingly, the feeling for the passage of time at the present moment is based on the perception of the bodily self.

Whereas colors are all around us and we directly experience them, and often enjoy the world as colored, they do not receive much attention in medical and care activities, and even less in ethical analyses. Usually, color is regarded as something secondary and trivial. As a subjective impression it is less important than objective observations and findings. Nonetheless, as discussed in this book, color has played and continues to play an important role in healthcare, not only in diagnostic but also therapeutic endeavours. The same is true for ethics. It used to be clearly demarcated from aesthetics, relegating color to the domain of emotions, feelings, intuitions and subjective experiences while ethics is characterized by rational arguments and deliberation. In present-day bioethical debate this distinction can no longer be upheld since in practice colors (particularly black and white) are associated with moral appreciations and interpretations which influence ethical judgments before they are rationally articulated. This chapter briefly summarizes the contents of the subsequent chapters.

Previous studies have looked at how different concert halls with different lateral reflections affect apparent source width. Yet, the perceptual effects of different source distributions with different recording techniques on apparent source width are not well understood. This study explores how listeners perceive the width of an orchestra by using four stereo and one binaural recording techniques and three wave field synthesis ensemble settings. Subjective experiments were conducted using stereo loudspeakers and headphone to play back the recording clips asking the listeners to rate the perceived wideness of the sound source. Results show that recording techniques greatly influence how wide an orchestra is perceived. The primary mechanism used to judge auditory spa- tial impression differs between stereo loudspeaker and headphone listening. When western classical symphony is recorded and reproduced by two-channel stereophony, the changes in instrument positions in terms of increasing or reducing the physical source width do not lead to an obvious increase or reduction on the spatial impression of the performing entity.

Couples, like individuals, are experiencing social acceptance or rejection during different stages of their relational life. In addition, intimate couples can benefit of the tangible and emotional support that they are likely to need, especially when confronted by stress. Social networks create both opportunities and constraints for people in terms of accessing and using resources in the process of forming and developing a romantic relationship. The study examines the role of personal first impressions and feedbacks given by social networks� members during the development of couple relationships, from the perspectives of partners. In this study, the social networks paradigm was used to explore the role of social network in forming and developing a romantic relationship. A qualitative study was conducted in Romania, using semi-structured interviews. The analysis indicates the following themes: the context of the first meeting; subjective perceptions resulting from the first and subsequent meetings; social actors involved in the courtship period, qualities noted in the potential partner (perceived offer); favorable elements to the marriage decision. Findings extend our understanding of the ways that couples form and manage their intimate relationships in a social context. Interventions targeting couples may benefit from addressing their social contexts as well.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Recent years, ANC (Active Noise Control) technology has been paying attention. However, rather than the noise measures, the noise gives us the impression even running sound for motorcycles. That is, the control method of the engine sound is shifted from the noise reduction to sound design in each manufactures. Therefore, we proposed a method to design the engine sound using Active Sound Quality Control (ASQC) based on the ANC. Specifically, we proposed the algorithm amplifying and reducing the engine specific order components. From the simulation results, the engine specific order components can be amplified and reduced like an equalizer with the proposed algorithm. And, auditory impressions of engine sound controlled by ASQC were investigated using psychoacoustic measurements. 13 stimuli were obtained by applying ASQC for several order components to amplify or reduce their levels. Following stimuli were presented to 10 healthy volunteers with control for first-, second- and both first- and second-, order components to decrease or increase, respectively. The scale values of preference for each stimulus were obtained by Scheffe's paired comparison tests. When the reduction-level increased, the preference was decreased or increased from the reference sound. Also when the amplification-level increased, the preference was decreased from the reference sound. As the reason, it seems that reference sound pressure is felt to be sufficiently large. These results indicated that the control corresponding to the individual is important for improvements in auditory impressions.</div></div>

In advertising and marketing, information is often repeatedly presented to consumers to increase their interest and sensitivity. This method is based on what is known in psychology as the ‘mere exposure effect’. In contrast, there is a growing interest in "neuromarketing," the application of brain science ideas to marketing, and the relationship between various psychological effects and brain activity in marketing. Brain measurements have also been used to study the mere exposure effect.However, although there have been various neuroscientific studies and verifications of the mere exposure effect, there have been few experiments that involve multiple exposure to stimuli across days. Therefore, we measured brain activity to investigate the effect of stimulus presentation across multiple days on impressions.In this study, we conducted an experiment in which subjects listened to music every day for a week. On the first day, when the subjects listened to the music for the first time, we conducted subjective evaluations of liking and brain function measurements. The next day, they listened to the music once every day, at home, for five days. On the last day, six days after the first day, we conducted the same subjective evaluation and brain function measurements as on the first day. To create music stimuli that the subjects had never perceived before, an automatic music creation tool was used.During brain activity measurement using optical topography, we focused on the change in the impression of likeability. In optical topography, the change in the concentration of Oxy-Hb in the brain blood flow was measured as a time-series data volume based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). In the human brain, the amount of Oxy-Hb in specific activity areas increases with time. By measuring the increase and decrease in Oxy-Hb, we can understand how the subject responds to stimuli.We experimented with 10 healthy right-handed undergraduate and graduate students in their 20s (8 men and 2 women, average age 22.6 years) who provided informed consent, following the rules of the Ethics Committee of Chuo University.Consequently, the verification of impression evaluation, which is a subjective evaluation, showed that the impression evaluation increased significantly from the first day to the last day. At this point, it can be said that the mere exposure effect occurred through repeated listening. An analysis of the brain blood flow data showed that the prefrontal cortex became more active during the processing of negative impressions. In particular, the activity of the DLPFC may be deeply involved in the judgment of impressions. Although this was considered a hypothetical event in the previous study, it was clarified in this study without contradicting the data. The results also suggest a new possibility that the brain activity of first impressions can be used to estimate how impressions change in the future. These results may be useful in the field of neuromarketing for predicting long-term advertising effects.

In recent years, scents have been increasingly used in various situations as stimulants in addition to content, such as in 4DX movie screenings and as original aromas to enhance brand images. Research on scents has also garnered interest; a study conducted at a casino in Las Vegas reported that creating specific scents around the slot machines increased the input number of coins by approximately 45%, and research on the effects of lighting or scent have suggested that scents may influence purchase motivations. The olfactory brain that is responsible for the sense of smell overlaps with the emotional brain that is responsible for emotions and is believed to contribute greatly to its development. The sense of smell is considered to have stronger connections to emotions than the other senses, and there is growing interest in the use of scents to manipulate psychological states into desired states. We experimentally evaluated the relationships between emotional changes caused by scents and image evaluations. Further, we obtained the image evaluation impressions and quantified the influences of scent on selection and evaluation. In order to evaluate the differences in selection, we focused on the categories of images. We prepared five categories of images: sweets, fruits, flowers, nature, and indoor images, and asked the participants to select images that did not overlap the categories. An evaluation index was created based on the harmony of the fragrance with the impression of the image. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the change in the selection rate and the harmony with the fragrance in each category. This suggests that the presentation of scents gives a better impression to images that have a high degree of harmony with scents. To assess the effects of emotion induction by scent presentation on evaluation of image impressions, we conducted experiments for image impression evaluations by presenting scents to 10 healthy male participants in their 20s (22.3±1.3 years) with no known olfactory abnormalities. The ambient air was scented using a bubbling method and supplied through a nasal cannula. We used peppermint essential oil, which has different pleasant and unpleasant emotion associations depending on participant experiences and presented it at a concentration of 1%. The Japanese version of the POMS2 (short version) assessments were used for subjective evaluations of emotion induction, and the emotion changes was evaluated from the differences in scores before and after the experiments. To objectively evaluate emotions, we used a measure the volumetric pulse waveforms from the participant fingertips as well as sweating characteristics. Subjective evaluations of the scent were conducted after completion of the impression evaluations for two items, namely "pleasant-unpleasant" and "arousing-sedating". Two pleasant images, one neutral image, and two unpleasant images were selected based on subjective emotional valences. In the impression evaluation experiment that focused on changes in emotions, a positive correlation was observed between changes in images and scent sensitivity evaluations for positive images, and a negative correlation was similarly identified for negative images.

Photographs and CG images are generally rendered using a perspective projection. However, because a perspective projection image does not always represent the visual impression of a real space, we occasionally feel a sense of incompatibility when viewing such images. We believe that clarifying the human visual characteristics will enable the creation of more realistic images. A previous study investigated the human perception of size in a real space and proposed a magnification-rate function that shows the relationship between the subjective visual size of an object to be drawn and the observation distance. Images applying the magnification-rate function provide an impression closer to that in a real space than do perspective projection images. However, these results have only been verified for single-point landscapes. In this study, to investigate the impression of an image, we applied the magnification-rate function to images portraying landscapes with a two-point perspective. The results show that the magnification-transformed images were evaluated as being closer to the impressions in a real space than those of perspective projected images. This is similar to the evaluation of transformed images for one-point perspective landscapes, suggesting that an image transformation using the magnification-rate function is effective for two-point perspective landscapes.

This paper reports on two studies that extend the work of John Flynn and a CIE Study Group, Study Group A, from the 1970’s, exploring the influence of light on subjective impressions of an environment. In particular, the study focuses on chromaticity, i.e., colour temperature, and light level, illuminance, as two of the parameters that might influence these subjective impressions. In the first study, twenty-eight subjects rated their impressions on a series of semantic-differential rating scales relative to six colour temperatures delivered in a classroom-like environment. In the second study, thirty-two subjects rated their impressions on a series of semantic differential rating scales relative to six colour temperatures and three illuminance levels delivered in the same classroom-like setting. The results suggest chromaticity has a stronger influence on subjective impressions than could be determined by Flynn, but with trends that differ somewhat with respect to illuminance level

The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).
