These deposited particulates are engulfed by alveolar macrophages, which serve as sentinel cells of the lungs, and subsequently removed from the lungs, indicating that alveolar macrophages play a crucial role in clearing particulates in the lungs. The ability to measure temperature in extreme environments such as the hot sections of gas turbines is critically important. Several on-line techniques exist but it is often not possible to measure in real-time the temperature of all surfaces of interest. Indeed, some surfaces are so inaccessible as to require complex, costly and intrusive instrumentation for on-line temperature measurement. Here, off-line sensors, also called thermal history sensors, can be used to record the temperatures to which they are exposed, in such a way that they can be extracted later off-line, at room temperature.

Walshire, Lucas, Joseph Dunbar, and Benjamin Breland. Stability analysis of Old River Low Sill Structure. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45349.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
An updated stability analysis was performed on the Old River Low Sill Structure due to a change in the operating conditions from historic river sedimentation. Sedimentation of the Mississippi River channel since the 1973 spring flood has caused higher river stages at lower discharges. Numerical methods used included nonlinear analysis of pile group stability, seepage analyses, and limit equilibrium methods. The structure’s foundation was compromised during the 1973 flood, and emergency repairs were conducted to prevent scouring and undermining of the foundation by the flood scour. Rehabilitati

Résumé :
As the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was in the last year of its 2015–2021 strategic plan, COL sought to evaluate the impact of its interventions in open and innovative schooling (OIS) in the period 2018–2021 through an external review. An online quantitative study was carried out in Belize, Malawi, Mozambique, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zambia, followed by a contextual cost–benefit analysis, and a social return on investment (SROI) analysis. Overall, COL’s contribution to the OIS programme in terms of Phase 1 and Phase 2 activities is perceived to have significantly contributed to the success

Higuera Roa, Oscar, and Jack O'Connor. Technical Report: Hurricane Ida. United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53324/nyky2894.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
On 1 September 2021, remnants of Hurricane Ida, the costliest disaster of 2021, brought historic rainfall to New York City, triggering the city’s first-ever flash flood alerts as water flooded streets, subway stations and apartments. Many of the people that lost their lives in the floods lived in basement apartments, and the water management system was completely overwhelmed, indicating a pressing need for infrastructure improvements to prevent such a disaster from happening again. Conrady, Morgan, Markus Bauer, Kyoo Jo, Donald Cropek, and Ryan Busby. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for determination of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in volatile emissions from soil disturbance. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42289.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A method is described here for the concentration and determination of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) from the gaseous phase, with translation to field collection and quantification from soil disturbances in situ. The method is based on the use of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers for adsorption of volatile chemicals from the vapor phase, followed by desorption into a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) for analysis. The use of a SPME fiber allows simple introduction to the GC-MS without further sample preparation. Several fiber sorbent types were studied and the 50/30 μ

Bastos, Fabiano, Rogério Boueri, Maria Cristina Mac Dowell, and Emilio Pineda. Analysis of Public Spending: An Evaluation Methodology for Measuring the Efficiency of Brazilian State Spending on Education. Inter-American Development Bank, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0007981.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficiency of state public education systems in Brazil. State government spending on education and state gross domestic product are interpreted as input variables, with the latter being non-discretionary. Output variables are based on the number of state public school students taking the ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio, a national exam taken at the end of high school studies) and the Prova Brasil (a national exam taken at the end of the 5th and 9th grades) and their scores on these exams. Variables were not scaled per capita

Hill, Samuel, Yothin Jinjarak, and Donghyun Park. Buoyant or Sinking? Tax Revenue Performance and Prospects in Developing Asia. Asian Development Bank, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.22617/wps220182-2.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This paper examines tax revenue mobilization in developing Asia before the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and in 2020. Analysis suggests that short- and long-run tax buoyancy in developing Asia were close to one before COVID-19, indicating fiscal sustainability. The study estimates that in 2020 the pandemic caused these economies to lose average excess tax revenue equal to half a percentage point of 2019 GDP. It also finds that tax-to-GDP ratios are projected to improve toward 2030 in a majority of developing Asian economies, other things held constant.

Knight, R. D., B. A. Kjarsgaard, E G Potter, and A. Plourde. Uranium, thorium, and potassium analyses using pXRF spectrometry. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/328973.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The application of portable XRF spectrometry (pXRF) for determining concentrations of uranium (U), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) was evaluated using a combination of 12 Certified Reference Materials, 17 Standard Reference Materials, and 25 rock samples collected from areas of known U occurrences or mineralization. Samples were analysed by pXRF in Soil, Mining Cu/Zn and Mining Ta/Hf modes. Resulting pXRF data were compared to published recommended values, obtained by total or near total digestion methods with ICP-MS and ICP-OES analysis. Results for pXRF show a linear relationship, for thorium

Approximation of misclassification probabilities using quadratic classifier for repeated measurements with known covariance matrices. Linköping University Electronic Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.3384/lith-mat-r-2024-02.

Résumé :
Quadratic discriminant analysis is a well-established supervised classification method, which extends the linear the linear discriminant analysis by relaxing the assumption of equal variances across classes. In this study, quadratic discriminant analysis is used to develop a quadratic classification rule based on repeated measurements. We employ a bilinear regression model to assign new observations to predefined populations and approximate the misclassification probability. Through weighted estimators, we estimate unknown mean parameters and derive moments of the quadratic classifier. We then

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: Background and aim: Increasing evidence has revealed the valuable diagnostic and prognostic applications of dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs) in hepatoblastoma (HB), the most common hepatic malignancy during childhood. However, these results are inconsistent and remain to be elucidated. In the present study, we aimed to systematically compile up-to-date information regarding the clinical value of miRNAs in HB. Methods: Articles concerning the diagnostic and prognostic value of single miRNAs for HB were searched from databases. The sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE)
