Résumé :
Design and simulations of an integrated photonic device that can optically detect the magnetization direction of its ultra-thin (∼12 nm) metal cladding, thus ‘reading’ the stored magnetic memory, are presented. The device is an unbalanced Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based on InP Membrane on Silicon (IMOS) platform. The MZI consists of a ferromagnetic thin-film cladding and a delay line in one branch, and a polarization converter in the other. It quantitatively measures the non-reciprocal phase shift caused by the Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect in the guided mode which depends on the memory bit’s magnetization direction. The current design is an analytical tool for research exploration of all-optical magnetic memory reading. It has been shown that the device is able to read a nanoscale memory bit (400 × 50 × 12 nm) by using a Kerr rotation as small as 0.2∘, in the presence of a noise ∼10 dB in terms of signal-to-noise ratio. The device is shown to tolerate performance reductions that can arise during the fabrication.

Résumé :
In the pursuit of enhancing the technological maturity of innovative magnetic sensing techniques, opportunities presented by in-orbit platforms (IOD/IOV experiments) provide a means to evaluate their in-flight capabilities. The Magnetic Experiments for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (MELISA) represent a set of in-flight demonstrators designed to characterize the low-frequency noise performance of a magnetic measurement system within a challenging space environment. In Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, electronic circuits are exposed to high levels of radiation coming from energetic particles trapped by the Earth’s magnetic field, solar flares, and galactic cosmic rays. A significant effect is the accidental bit-flipping in memory registers. This work presents an analysis of memory data redundancy resources using auxiliary second flash memory and exposes recovery options to retain critical data utilizing a duplicated data structure. A new and lightweight technique, CCM (Cross-Checking and Mirroring), is proposed to verify the proper performance of these techniques. Four alternative algorithms included in the original version of the MELISA software (Version v0.0) are presented. All the versions have been validated and evaluated according to various merit indicators. The evaluations showed similar performances for the proposed techniques, and they are valid for situations in which the flash memory suffers from more than one bit-flip. The overhead due to the introduction of additional instructions to the main code is negligible, even in the target experiment based on an 8-bit microcontroller.

Résumé :
Recent atom interferometry (AI) experiments involving Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) have been conducted under extreme conditions of volume and interrogation time. Numerical solution of the rotating-frame Gross–Pitaevskii equation (RFGPE), which is the standard mean-field theory applied to these experiments, is impractical due to the excessive computation time and memory required. We present a variational model that provides approximate solutions of the RFGPE for a power-law potential on a practical time scale. This model is well-suited to the design and analysis of AI experiments involving BECs that are split and later recombined to form an interference pattern. We derive the equations of motion of the variational parameters for this model and illustrate how the model can be applied to the sequence of steps in a recent AI experiment where BECs were used to implement a dual-Sagnac atom interferometer rotation sensor. We use this model to investigate the impact of finite-size and interaction effects on the single-Sagnac-interferometer phase shift.

Résumé :
This paper demonstrates the thermal-induced mechanical problems resulted from various temperature profiles of reliability test for a system-in-package (SIP) assembly process. The package includes two flip chip mounted chips (underfilled), two memory CSPs, some passive SMDs and 4-layer BT substrate. The flip-chip specimen was taken and the Moiré Interferometry was used as methodology to verify the developed Finite Element Model and material property. It also shows that the developed finite element model is capable to simulate the JEDEC standard JESD22-A104 reliability thermal cycle test and then to predict solder fatigue life and to summarize design rules for thermal optimization of package based on the creep model and viscoplastic model of solder while the SIP package design is proceeded. Thermal design for SIP depends on the placement of FC chip (high power) and memory CSP components. Passive SMDs are also included to study the effect of thermal-induced stress. A series of comprehensive parametric studies were conducted in this paper.

Résumé :
Martensitic phase transformation can greatly affect the mechanical behaviors and the stress-strain response of shape memory alloys (SMAs). In this study, the effect of martensitic phase transformation on the deformation of a single-crystal TiNi SMA specimen with a triangle crack was investigated experimentally by means of moiré interferometry method. A typical displacement field and the corresponding strain field in areas both around and far from the tip of the crack were measured in a certain time during the loading process in which the tensile load is coupled with the stress-induced martensitic phase transformation. Some characteristics of the deformation and the martensitic phase transformation of the specimen are revealed. These results may provide a reliable support for revealing the fracture mechanism of single crystal TiNi SMAs, and may enable further development in putting forward the failure criterion of SMAs.

Résumé :
Abstract We develop a new method for spatially mapping a lower limit on the mass fraction of the cold neutral medium by analyzing the amplitude structure of T ˆ b ( k v ) , the Fourier transform of T b (v), the spectrum of the brightness temperature of the H i 21 cm line emission with respect to the radial velocity v. This advances a broader effort exploiting 21 cm emission line data alone (without absorption line data, τ) to extract integrated properties of the multiphase structure of the H i gas and to map each phase separately. Using toy models, we illustrate the origin of interference patterns seen in T ˆ b ( k v ) . Building on this, a lower limit on the cold gas mass fraction is obtained from the amplitude of T ˆ b at high k v . Tested on a numerical simulation of thermally bi-stable turbulence, the lower limit from this method has a strong linear correlation with the “true” cold gas mass fraction from the simulation for a relatively low cold gas mass fraction. At a higher mass fraction, our lower limit is lower than the “true” value, because of a combination of interference and opacity effects. Comparison with absorption surveys shows a similar behavior, with a departure from linear correlation at N H I ≳ 3–5 × 1020 cm−2. Application to the DRAO Deep Field from DHIGLS reveals a complex network of cold filaments in the Spider, an important structural property of the thermal condensation of the H i gas. Application to the HI4PI survey in the velocity range −90 < v < 90 km s−1 produces a full sky map of a lower limit on the mass fraction of the cold neutral medium at 16.′2 resolution. Our new method has the ability to extract a lower limit on the cold gas mass fraction for massive amounts of emission line data alone with low computing time and memory, pointing the way to new approaches suitable for the new generation of radio interferometers.

Résumé :
NiTi alloys are commonly used in many fields such as aerospace, mechanical engineering due to their excellent mechanical properties and shape memory effect. In recent years, the emergence of selective laser melting (SLM) technology provides a new method for the preparation of NiTi parts. But the surface corrosion failure of SLM-NiTi is the most common problem. This paper mainly focuses on the research of femtosecond laser shock peening of the surface of SLM-NiTi alloy to improve the corrosion resistance. Selecting different scanning space (1 μm, 3 μm, 5 μm, 10 μm), and analyze the surface morphology of the material through the OM, SEM, EDS and white light interferometer, and investigate the surface nanohardness and corrosion resistance through nanoindentation and electrochemical testing. The research results show that part of the TiO2 is formed under different scanning spaces, and part of NiO is formed when the scanning space is 1μm. At the same time, it is found that the sample under the condition of 10 μm has the most excellent corrosion resistance and nanohardness. The nanohardness reaches 1303 ± 40 HV and the corrosion current density reaches 1.45 ± 0.1 × 10−9 A·cm−2. Proper femtosecond laser treatment can effectively improve the surface strength and corrosion resistance of the NiTi alloys.

Résumé :
Abstract Ultralight dark matter exhibits an order-one density fluctuation over the spatial scale of its wavelength. These fluctuations gravitationally interact with gravitational wave interferometers, leading to distinctive signals in detectors. We investigate the ultralight dark matter-induced effects in the gravitational wave interferometers. We perform a systematic computation of the power spectrum of ultralight dark matter in interferometers. We show that the ultralight dark matter-induced effect is most relevant for the interferometers with long baseline and that it is only a sub-leading effect compared to the estimated noise level in the case of Laser Interferometer Space Antenna or future interferometers with an arm-length comparable to a few astronomical units. Gravitational wave interferometers can then place upper limits on the ultralight dark matter density in the solar system. We find that, under certain assumptions, future interferometers with AU-scale arm-length might probe the dark matter density a few hundred times the local dark matter density, which is measured over a much larger spatial scale.

This thesis advances multimode quantum optics through two major theoretical and practical contributions.First, we introduce temporal cavities as a novel approach to temporal mode filtering, leveraging space-time duality principles to translate spatial mode-cleaning cavity principles to the temporal domain. Unlike existing approaches, this filter operation does not rely on nonlinear interactions or phase matching, preserves the carrier frequency, and maintains the temporal mode structure intact. We demonstrate practical implementation feasibility using electro-optic time lenses and diffraction gratings, with comprehensive parameter optimization strategies for both classical and quantum applications.Second, we address fundamental limitations in quantum state detection through interferometers with memory effect (IME). We establish new criteria for predicting hidden squeezing directly from system parameters and develop novel smooth decomposition methods for implementing frequency-dependent unitaries. These innovations enable perfect mode-matching for states exhibiting complex spectral features and morphing supermodes, which are more common than previously recognized in cavity-based quantum systems. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated through detailed case studies of optical parametric oscillator configurations

Résumé :
An edge response characterization technique to predict the ITF of an interferometer using non- interferometric measurements has been shown to be effective. This technique eliminates the need for phase objects to be used in the characterization process. Using coherent imaging with an irradiance sensitive detector and an irradiance step as a characterization artifact to determine an interferometer's ITF was proven viable for diffraction limited, defocused, astigmatic, and spherically aberrated systems. Simulations and collected data demonstrated agreement between the interferometric edge response characterization technique results and coherent imaging edge response characterization technique results. The effect that aberrations have on ITF curves has been investigated in this thesis and an understanding of the system behavior under aberrated conditions was investigated.

Résumé :
Although the effect of working memory (WM) load on the magnitude of distractor interference has been studied extensively, a common characteristic in prior research is that the target and distractors belong to different objects. The present experiments investigate the effect of WM load on distractor interference when the relevant and irrelevant information is part of the same object. In two experiments, participants saw stimulus displays that consisted of a memory set followed by a Stroop color stimulus. The tasks were to respond to the color of the stimulus first and then to a memory probe. The principal manipulations were the relationship between the color and meaning of the Stroop stimulus (neutral vs. incongruent) and the level of WM load (high vs. low). The results show that WM load had little effect on the magnitude of Stroop interference. These results were consistent with previous research which shows that WM load plays a limited role in the efficiency of selective attention when the extent of attentional focus was held constant across different WM load conditions. They also emphasize the importance of stimulus structure in understanding selective attention in general, and distractor processing in particular.

Résumé :
This thesis presents five studies which investigate the effect of trauma on autobiographical memory in both adult and adolescent population samples. Previous literature has found overgeneral recall to the cueing task in both abuse and other trauma population samples and reduced personal semantic recall in abuse population samples. This series of studies confirmed that poor semantic recall is a feature of the aftermath of abuse, both adolescent clinical and adult non clinical. Furthermore reduced semantic recall was apparent in an adolescent burn injured population sample. Episodic recall was measured using the cueing task with emotional cue words and the Children's Autobiographical Memory Interview, a semi structured interview based on lifetime periods. Consistent with the adult literature, traumatised adolescents demonstrated slower response latencies and overgeneral recall to the cueing task. Deficits were also found in recall to the lifetime periods on the CAMI and in the adolescent burn population samples these were further analysed in relation to the burn accident. However, the non clinical adult population sample demonstrated no significant differences on the cueing task and better episodic recall. In addition, a preliminary report suggested that the Means End Problem Solving task could be developed as an indirect autobiographical memory task.

Résumé :
Prior research has shown that visual working memory (VWM) performance can be improved via retrospective cues (“retro-cues”) that spatially indicate which item currently being held in working memory will be probed at test. These studies have utilized electroencephalography (EEG) methods to monitor contralateral delay activity (CDA) event related potentials (ERPs) and assert that retro-cues benefit memory by reducing effective memory load. Here, we investigated the potential relationship between CDA amplitude and future long-term memory (LTM) performance. Emerging evidence from ERP and fMRI studies suggest that working memory maintenance can contribute to LTM formation, which suggests that memory systems are not as discrete as some models suggest. We investigated the hypotheses that A) the benefits afforded by the retro-cue in VWM will carry over into LTM, and B) CDA amplitude will be modulated by subsequent LTM performance. Results revealed that retro-cuing improved item accuracy at both VWM and LTM delays, suggesting that the two memory systems are interactive. Due to an insufficient amount of subsequent LTM misses, we were unfortunately too underpowered to detect a CDA depending on long-term memory performance. However, we found that posterior slow-wave potentials during the maintenance period did differ by subsequent LTM performance, which further suggests an interactive systems account of memory. We also sought to investigate what exactly the retro-cue cues. Prior research has focused on memory for items, but no study has questioned if the retro-cue also enhances memory for item location. To this end, the present study investigated the effect of retro-cueing on both item identity and item location. LTM Behavioral results revealed a retro-cue benefit for item accuracy but no benefit for item location, suggesting that the retro-cue selectively cues item identity.

Silva, Maria Catarina Coutinho Varela da. « Effect of surfactant on PDLC films with and without permanent memory effect ». Master's thesis, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/10833.

Résumé :
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Química e Bioquímica
The main goal of this work is to optimize the performance of the PDLC films with the introduction of an additive, in this case the triton X100. The polymer matrix of the PDLC is based on monomers, such as Tri(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate with molecular weight of 875 which were thermal polymerized using α,α-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. Different aspects were investigated, such as the study of the dynamics of the transition ON/OFF state using a high-frequency alternate voltage and the attempt to minimize the liquid crystal anchorage force to the polymer matrix observed. The polymer morphology and the composites synthesized were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The PDLC films were also analyzed resorting to additional studies of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy . Finally, the kinetic behavior of the PDLC films was studied. This part of the work was done with the goal to understand what was the impact of the increase amount of TX100 on the orientation and disorientation time of the LC molecules. Additionally, a fitting model was developed in order to describe the orientation and disorientation kinetic of the system. It was verified that the increase amount of TX100 modifies the initial anchorage force of the LC molecules to the polymeric matrix, decreasing it. This reflects on the increase of the permanent memory effect and decrease of the E90 of the PDLC films, verified also with the decrease of the average elastic constant, K, of the PDLC film. On this work, the best value for the permanent memory effect was 96% with an E90 of 2V/μm. However, this work also demonstrates that the kinetic of the system is independent of the amount of TX100, which means that the LC molecules orientate and disorientate at practically the same time with or without additive.

Résumé :
Abstract Self-folding origami utilizes shape memory polymers (SMPs) to enable deployable space structures, such as those intended for large-scale, low-frequency radio interferometry. The size of structure that may be deployed is limited by the capacity of the smart material to do work. Previous studies focused on activation mechanisms and the kinematics of self-folding polymers, but have largely neglected an evaluation of the energy stored in the folding hinge. This paper seeks to characterize the work done by self-folding origami hinges made of pre-strained polystyrene (PSPS) as it deforms due to the shape-memory effect. SMP samples are patterned with black ink hinges and exposed to an infrared (IR) light. The ink absorbs thermal energy from the light, which leads to local heating and shrinking in the hinge region. Activation of the self-folding response, e.g. shrinking, occurs when the material reaches a temperature higher than its glass transition temperature, and a gradient in shrinking causes the sample to fold. The self-folding process is sensitive to physical constraints and changes in energy input into the sample. Thus, we will evaluate the energy stored in the self-folding hinge by measuring the work done under varying thermal stimuli in an array of tests that include universal material shrinkage and single-hinge folds. We evaluate hinge torque based on a dynamic analysis of the motion of the self-folding sheet. Quantification of the capacity of self-folding origami hinges to do work enables the design of deployable space structures by not only considering the activation mechanism and self-folding kinematics, but also accounts for the size of structure that may be deployed.

Résumé :
We examine the effect of undiagnosed memory disorders on credit outcomes using nationally representative credit reporting data merged with Medicare data. Years prior to eventual diagnosis, average credit scores begin to weaken and payment delinquency begins to increase, overall and for mortgage and credit card accounts specifically. Credit outcomes consistently deteriorate over the quarters leading up to diagnosis. The harmful financial effects of undiagnosed memory disorders exacerbate the already substantial financial pressure households face upon diagnosis of a memory disorder. Our findings substantiate the possible utility of credit reporting data for facilitating early identification of those at risk for memory disorders.

Résumé :
Sedentary behaviour is extremely prevalent in Western societies and is significantly associated with an elevated risk of all-cause mortality that cannot be mitigated by physical activity. The introduction of standing desks into the workplace offers a solution to this inactivity, but there is limited investigation regarding the effects of standing on cognition, which is a major consideration in much office-based work. In this study we aimed to provide an exploratory investigation on the effect on cognitive performance of standing while working. We tested 30 office-based adults on a battery of 19 cognitive tasks (tapping five cognitive domains) in a randomised, repeatedmeasures crossover design study. Two conditions (standing versus sitting) were investigated over two 7.5-hour work days including morning, midday and afternoon sessions (Time of Day). Effects were analysed using multivariate two-way repeated-measures ANOVAs (Condition by Time of Day) for five cognitive domains. Overall, after correcting for multiple comparisons, there were no differences in performance between sitting and standing. At an uncorrected level, however, significant effects of Condition were found in three of the 19 tasks, with all demonstrating better performance while standing. Importantly, these results suggest that there is no detriment to cognitive performance through standing. They also provide an initial indication that there may be cognitive benefits of standing in the attention and working memory domains, which may be a promising avenue for future inquiry.

Résumé :
In this research the technology of complex Markov chains, i.e. Markov chains with a memory is applied to forecast financial time-series. The main distinction of complex or high-order Markov chains [1] and simple first-order ones is the existing of after effect or memory. The high-order Markov chains can be simplified to first-order ones by generalizing the states in Markov chains. Considering the “generalized state” as the sequence of states makes a possibility to model high-order Markov chains like first-order ones. The adaptive method of defining the states is proposed, it is concerned with the statistic properties of price returns [2]. According to the fundamental principles of quantum measurement theories, the measurement procedure impacts not only on the result of the measurement, but also on the state of the measured system, and the behaviour of this system in the future remains undefined, despite of the precision of the measurement. This statement, in our opinion, is general and is true not only for physical systems, but to any complex systems [3].

In this research the technology of complex Markov chains is applied to predict financial time series. The main distinction of complex or high-order Markov Chains and simple first-order ones is the existing of after-effect or memory. The technology proposes prediction with the hierarchy of time discretization intervals and splicing procedure for the prediction results at the different frequency levels to the single prediction output time series. The hierarchy of time discretizations gives a possibility to use fractal properties of the given time series to make prediction on the different frequencies of the series. The prediction results for world’s stock market indices are presented.

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: To identify empirical studies that measured the feasibility and effect of computer-based executive function stimulation and rehabilitation programs in the young and middle adult population. Background: Reviews that evaluate the effectiveness of computerized cognitive training programs on executive functions in different population groups have shown contradictory results, to a certain extent associated with the methodological characteristics of said studies (Gates et al., 2019; 2020); most of them These reviews have focused on older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020; Yoo et al., 2015) with stroke sequelae, and adults with cognitive impairment. These studies have found improvements in general cognitive function in older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020); however, the effect on executive functions have not been studied. Only one review was carried out on the average adult (Gates et al., 2019); the authors restricted the search to interventions with more than 12 weeks and only found one article with eligibility criteria. Their work concluded that computerized cognitive training in midlife demonstrated lasting effects on general cognitive function after 12 weeks of training and on memory after 24 weeks of training.
