Gilat, Eliyau Zeev. « the Arab boycott of Israel : economic political warfare against Israel ». Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/23542.

Résumé :
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
This thesis examines the effectiveness of the Arab Boycott of Israel from an economic and a political perspective. This study covers the Arab boycott from 1946 until 1990. It demonstrates that economically and politically, the Arab boycott had three distinct phases. The first of these was the period from the declaration of the Arab boycott in 1946 until the 1973 War. The second phase took place between the 1973 War and the 1979 peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. The third phase began with the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement and ends in 1990. This study suggests that the boycott was most effective when supported by the threat of an oil embargo in effect between 1973 and 1979. U.S. actions against the Arab boycott were also effective. Finally, this thesis contends that the 1979 peace agreement between Israel and Egypt brought frustration to those who expected that Israel's trade with such a close and large country as Egypt would open a huge trade market. In sum, the Arab boycott did not succeed in destroying Israel's economy, as was its declared intention.

We aimed to demonstrate mainly through historical analysis and international politics, the genesis of the conflict in the middle east between jews and arabs, is embedded within a global context and has its heart in imperialist interests and also the bipolarity emerged after world war ii world, and not in rivalry or hatred between secular people, although the ethnic/religious discourse has often succeeded mask the reality of this antagonism, originating in the twentieth century, which entered the xxi no prospect of resolution. history shows that, on the one hand, jews and arabs had some "conflicting interinsti'', especially at the dawn of islam, on the other hand, lived peacefully and productively for centuries, as the umayyad caliphate in spain and elsewhere. History shows that, on the one hand, Jews and Arabs had some "conflicting Interinsti'', especially at the dawn of Islam, on the other hand, lived peacefully and productively for centuries, as the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain and elsewhere. The proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948, although it had set up a compromise solution to the problem anti/Semitic in Europe, redound, however, and paradoxically, a new strangeness and new conflicts now between Jewish and Arab inhabitants of Palestine and throughout the Middle East. The European powers, in this context, flow into a contradiction that your in the same motion that reiterated their prejudices, transporting them to the Middle East and, worsening noticeably with the Cold War and the confrontation between the United States and Soviet Union, which will make region – rich in essential energy resources to the West – the scene of their confrontation, making worse a situation was already desperate in the extreme.

Résumé :
This thesis provides an analysis of Israel&

s security conceptions, discourses and practices, in the context of the Arab&
#8211
Israeli conflict in general and the Israeli&
#8211
Palestinian conflict in particular, between 1948 and 2000. The purpose of the study is, to explore those processes through which particular definitions and practices of security have been produced and changed, against the background of the domestic debates and competing worldviews among key political actors
and to highlight the overall impact of these points in different periods on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, thus, on Israel&
#8217
s overall security. In this context, it is observed that the debates among the political actors, regarding the future borders and the identity of the state, have played a key role in the construction and reconstruction of Israeli security policy particularly vis-à
-vis the Palestinian problem. Nevertheless, it is also observed that the extent of these differences has been limited to the objectives of the security policy, and that a zero-sum conception of security, and the primacy of military means to confront the perceived threats have prevailed as common characteristics of Israeli security understanding, informing Israel&
#8217
s related practices. Along these lines the thesis considers the Oslo peace process as an anomaly, and tries to assess it within the framework of the continuities and changes it has introduced to thinking and acting about security in Israel.

Résumé :
The establishment of the Jewish state of Israel in mandatory Palestine in 1948 was celebrated as a triumph for the Zionist ideal, creating a homeland for the Jewish people following years of suffering and persecution throughout Europe, but was imprinted in the Palestinian narrative as the Nakba - the catastrophe resulting in just 12.5% of the original 900,000 Palestinians of the land remaining in the newly created state, most of whom lost their land and became internal refugees. This thesis analyses the ethnocratic nature of the Israeli state, revealing the weaknesses in Israel's claim to be a liberal democracy. It highlights the discrimination that the Palestinian-Arabs face in a state which derives its legitimacy from ethnoreligious characteristics, making equality impossible. Within this context I examine the resistance strategies of this group through the work of Palestinian-Arab civil society organisations in Israel. I analyse their work pertaining to land, language and culture, and education, and how these contribute to the empowerment of the Palestinian minority by strengthening their politicised collective identity. The ethnocratic nature of the state, and the securitized relationship between the Palestinian-Arab minority and the Israeli-Jewish state, hinder the level of tangible structural change that the civil society organisations can achieve through strategies such as litigation and advocacy. Whilst these remain important instruments, I argue that the real strength of the Palestinian-Arab civil society lies in strengthening their politicised collective identity and empowering the community. This thesis finishes by considering the implications that the securitized relationship between the Palestinian-Arabs and the Israeli state has on the future of Israel as a Jewish state. In a state where the changing demographics and increasingly securitized and antagonistic political environment places them in heightened danger of growing ethnic tensions and the possibility of forced population transfer, such issues are particularly pertinent.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intensive version of the Landreth (2002) 10-week filial therapy model as a method of intervention for children of Israeli parents living in Israel. This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of intensive filial therapy training in (a) reducing internalizing behavior problems of Israeli children; (b) reducing externalizing behavior problems of Israeli children; and (c) reducing overall behavior problems of Israeli children. A second purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of intensive filial therapy training with Israeli parents in increasing the parents' (a) empathic responsiveness with their children; (b) communication of acceptance to their children; (c) allowance of self-direction by their children; (d) involvement in their children's play activities; (e) feelings of efficacy as parents; and (f) reduction of parental stress. The experimental group consisted of fourteen Israeli children who their parents received nine intensive Filial Therapy training sessions within a five week period and had seven parent-child play sessions. The non-treatment comparison group consisted of thirteen Israeli children whose parents received no treatment. Parents in the study completed the Hebrew version of the Child Behavior Checklist, the Parenting Stress Index, and conducted pre-test and post-test play sessions for the Measurement of Empathy in Adult-Child Interaction. Multivariate Analysis of Covariance revealed the children in the experimental group significantly reduced external behavior problems. The results also revealed the parents in the experimental group significantly reduced parental stress and significantly increased communication of empathy to their children.

Todorova, Teodora. « Reframing Israel-Palestine : critical Israeli responses to the Palestinian call for just peace ». Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14049/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis examines how Israeli critical activist engagement with the Palestinian call for just peace reframes Israel-Palestine. The thesis makes a political-theoretical intervention by arguing that Israeli civil society engagement with the principles underlying just peace requires, if it is to be successful, the utilisation of non-statist conceptualisations of peace politics. The thesis draws upon feminist critical theory and postcolonial critique to theorise peace politics as a practice of solidarity. From this perspective the conflict is analysed through the prism of Nancy Fraser’s ‘all affected’ principle which asserts that all those whose lives and wellbeing are affected by an institution of power, whether that be a state or a transnational corporation, are subjects of justice in relation to that institution, whether they hold the same citizenship as its representatives or not. Thus, by virtue of sharing the same, albeit politically diffentiated, geo-political space Israelis and Palestinians residing in Israel within its 1948 borders, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as the refugees outside Israel-Palestine, are subjects of justice and potential solidarity. As such, the Palestinians have the right to demand justice not only from the state of Israel but also from its citizens. The activist work, narratives and responses of three critical Israeli case study groups are examined in relation to the call for just peace: Anarchists Against the Wall (AATW), the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), and Zochrot (Remembering). The activist narratives and practices examined testify to the way in which critical Israeli engagement with nonviolent ethical responsibility towards the Palestinian people can result in unprecedented narrative convergence, practical solidarity, and the possibility for non-domination and cohabitation. These critical activist practices reveal just peace as an emergent and ongoing project to reframe and rearticulate the contemporary relations of oppression and domination in Israel-Palestine.

De tre parametrarna är "enemy as a system", "center of gravity" samt "parallell attack".

This dissertation departs from the common understanding that the democratic challenge is to strike the right balance between security and democracy; rather it asserts that the relations between security and democracy are discursively constructed by political actors. The dissertation takes as case study a state where the security discourse has been acute and omnipresent since the very beginning of its establishment: Israel. Drawing on discourse theory premises and narrative analyses, the research enlightens how the security-democracy nexus is articulated in political discourse. The study offers a careful analysis of a set of debates held within the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, over laws and decisions taken in the name of security and that generated discussions over democratic values and principles. The main focus of the analysis is the post-second intifada laws, but the study also offers account of previous discursive articulations at play in the 1980s. Indeed, the understanding of the discursive articulations of the security democracy nexus would not be possible without digging into the roots of its discursive articulations. The overall work gives a detailed account of the way the dominant narrative, by articulating security and democracy in a "defensive democracy" story, has reproduced and reshaped the boundaries of the Israeli polity.

Résumé :
This essay focuses on analyzing the rhetoric concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in opinion pieces in the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter in 1988. This is done using a qualitative analysis method. The theoretical basis for the essay is primarily founded on postcolonial theory and in particular on Edward Said’s claim that Israel is a new example of European colonialism. The aim is to determine how the authors of the opinion pieces, using certain rhetoric, portray Israel and the Palestinians/PLO in relation to their position of power. The justification and condemnation of violence between the parties will also be examined. The results show that the pro-Israeli authors tend to use the Jews’ history of persecution and suffering as a justification for the existence of Israel. Also, they argue that Israeli violence is a form of self-defense as a result of Arab intransigence and violence. The more pro-Palestinian authors tend to portray Israel as a violent and oppressing regime, and in some cases adhere to the view on the state as an example of European colonialism.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Face2Face is a photographic project realized by JR, an undercover photographer and Marco, a technology consultant, in 2007 in the Middle East context. It consisted of taking the portraits of Israeli and Palestinian people who were doing the same job, printing them in huge formats and putting them on various unavoidable places in Israeli and Palestinian cities. The project was based on the idea that Israeli and Palestinian people were so much similar to each other, as if they were &lsquo
twin brothers raised in different families&rsquo
but that they were not aware of that. Therefore, the artists decided to provide them with images of the other side which would make people be surprised, laugh, stop for a while and think about the other side once again. The artists hoped that such a reworking of the ideas about the other side would hopefully motivate people to enter into dialogue with each other, which would eventually end up in peaceful co-existence. This thesis sets this photographic project as its starting point. It focuses upon its conceptualization of dialogue, which is based on the idea of seeing the other from a new perspective, and compares it with Mikhail Bakhtin&rsquo
s concept of dialogue and Emmanuel Levinas&rsquo
s concept of face-to-face, which are based on the idea of disrupting the self. It then criticizes the project for its neglect of various dimensions which shape Israeli and Palestinian identities, such as diaspora, nostalgia and home and of the heavy burden of the past on these two communities&rsquo
present. As a result, the thesis focuses upon the concept of collective memory at length and then discusses photography at the service of collective memory. Another section is devoted to the analysis of Israeli and Palestinian collective memories. The photographic project Face2Face is discussed all throughout the thesis in terms of its failure to spot the crucial dimensions in Israeli-Palestinian context, no matter how well intended it was.

Résumé :
The Civil Aviation Laws in Israel began their development since the independence of the State in 1948. They comprise of five main Aviation Acts and various executive regulations which facilitate the conduct of the civil aviation industry.
The basic aviation act, although modified and supplemented by native Israeli aviation laws is the Air Navigation Act: It was drafted in the 1920's by Great Britain and was incorporated into the legal system of the newly born state.
A review of the development of civil aviation law in Israel has not yet been completed by a single study considering its fundamental provisions, namely providing analysis of international and domestic sources, aviation organizations and policies.
Historically, the political situation in the Middle East has exerted influence on Israel's civil aviation policies. Now that the region is on the verge of a new era of peace, Israeli policy in this field will further be affected. Undoubtedly, a new way of thinking will have to emerge in order to face the possibilities and challenges that peace will bring.
The purpose of this thesis is therefore to describe, analyze and evaluate the basic features of aviation law and aviation policies of Israel.

The objective of the research is to examine Israeli women in management, and to illuminate the problems that characterize both women on their way to the top and those who have already reached t he top. In order to see whether Israel is different from other countries in this aspect, I present a comparison between women managers worldwide, followed by a survey of the Israeli social infrastructures which deal with working women compared with those in the United States. Four portraits of women executives illustrate characteristic struggles and conflicts in the career life of Israeli women. Regarding the comparison between Israeli and North American career women, in addition to a great deal of similarity I also find differences which result from both institutional and ideological attitudes concerning family roles. Finally, the research explores the explanations for lack of women in top management positions and offers recommendations.

Hoje, é fundamental a génese de novas políticas e estratégias que assegurarem a estabilidade política entre os países envolvidos; ABSTRACT: Title: Israel and the Middle East Between Past and Future. A Strategic Reassurance of Commitment to Peace. The Arab-Israeli conflict has caused, for many years political, social, and economic distress in the relations between Israel and Arab countries. This conflict deserves attention as well as the creation of new strategies to change the reality between the countries involved, by ending violence and promoting commitment to peace. This work aims to study this problem through diverse literary research and analysis of the period after the Oslo agreements to the present day, using the territorial dispute between Israel and Palestine as a focal point of the conflict, as well as historic rivalries as guiding principles involving Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria in regional strife. We believe that the initiative to develop a strategy to positively change the current situation comes from Israel, while it's the strongest country in the region and the most isolated from diplomatic and trade relations with most Arab countries. Our work intends to verify and analyse Israel's foreign policy towards Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria and the importance of a new Israeli strategy towards the commitment to peace with key Arab neighbors. As policies of both sides have been developed, some have contributed to the normalization of those relations. In contrast, new obstacles have been created that inhibit possible agreements. Fair bilateral negotiations are practically non-existent, making it difficult to advance to a multilateral level, which is necessary to reach reliable and impartial agreements. However, neither party has proved willing to conduct bilateral and multilateral negotiations with the commitment to break its warlike past. Today, the creation of new policies and strategies that ensure political stability between countries involved is fundamental.

This Masters thesis aims to trace a history of the idea of a bi-national state for Arabs and Jews in historical Palestine. After laying out the specificities of a binational state, it reconstructs the circulation of the binational idea in the period before the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, among progressive Jews and Palestinian Arabs, in the Zionist movement, and among left-wing organizations in Palestine. In a second step, we we analize how the period between the establishment of the State of Israel and the peace process that led to the Oslo Accords, in the 90s, was marked by silence around the binational ideal while all the same laying the foundations for its revival at the turn of the 21st century. Finally, regarding todays Israeli-Palestinian context, we analyze the prospects of revival of binational proposals, focusing on left-wing journalists, a number of more or less marginal participants in institutional politics, some critical intellectuals and academic supporters, and among activists and social movements for human rights.

Résumé :
Based on nineteen months of ethnographic field research in Israel/Palestine (including participant observation and in-depth interviews), this study presents an analysis of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition (ICAHD). First formed in 1997, it is a coalition of social movement organizations (SMOs) in the Israeli radical left peace and human rights movement. This project traces significant organizational, and wider movement, dynamics from the time of ICAHD's inception until the outbreak of the second Palestinian Intifada in September 2000.
While countless scholars investigate historical and contemporary aspects of the political conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, relatively little research attention is directed towards the efforts of Israeli and Palestinian activists towards conflict resolution. Following a brief description of the development of the Israeli peace movement, this study identifies and analyzes several mobilization issues relevant to organized activist forces in the Israeli radical movement in the final years of the Oslo peace process.
Building on recent collective action theories, this dissertation endorses analytical openness to the structuralist, rationalist, and culturalist dynamics of contentious politics. ICAHD members, as well as its organizational constituencies, are characterized by wide ideological and strategic heterogeneity, and in the first three years of its existence, this informal movement organization faced several overlapping strategic dilemmas. Investigating the historical and day-to-day dynamics of the committee, this study analyses various factors that influenced the strategic choices individual, and teams of, activists made during multiple types of mobilizations. By examining the impact of ICAHD's constituencies on how core leaders and activists engaged with dilemmas of organizational structure, strategic vision, inter-organizational alliances, mobilizing and funding opportunities, and overall goal selection, this dissertation identifies mechanisms (structural, organizational and cultural) that affected strategic decisions regarding mobilization, and outcomes of contentious politics.
The study concludes with a discussion of the relevance of its findings for the sociological study of collective protest. It suggests the extension of future research on these themes in more transnational and macro-theoretical directions.

Résumé :
Israeli food culture mimics the story of the country and the tensions in its society. The diversity of its food and how it is used in celebrations and in the everyday is a reflection of the divisions and tensions within. This dissertation has the aim of understanding the relationship between the food culture of Israel and the creation of its national identity. It is an effort to research what the mundane little things, the behaviours and practices of the everyday, such as cooking and feeding ourselves and others tell us about the place we were born and how we think the people of that place should act and live. In order to develop a better understanding of these topics and the many facets of Israeli nationalism this thesis interrogates how ordinary Israelis use food in their everyday life to construct, perform, consume, choose, talk about and negotiate their idea of nationhood. To answer this question, it uses mainly ethnographic methods that help to explore how Israeli national identity is experienced through its food culture and how social transformations are reflected in the consumption patterns of Israeli society. It argues that national identity cannot be imposed by the elites; on the contrary, it is negotiated, accepted or rejected by ordinary people, and reproduced through their daily routines. It pays attention to the role played by women as socializing agents of new comers: children and immigrants, in the private sphere. It also emphasises the power relationships that are revealed through everyday cooking and the differences between domestic and public food consumption. This thesis is an effort to shed light on the way ordinary people negotiate ideas of nationhood and contribute to its construction.

Badran, Abed. « Space design, making and tectonics in Palestinian architecture in Israel : impacts of the 'Israeli Project' ». Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/108427/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The physical construction of the Israeli state has brought massive destruction, demolition, dispossession, and expropriation of Palestinian cities, villages, lands, and natural resources. In addition, Palestinian common spatial memory and culture were blurred over nearly one century. The thesis explores and assesses the dynamics and processes which were caused - and occurred exclusively at Palestinian architecture, by the mechanism and practice of the 'Israeli Project'. Critical review of the literature on Palestinian villages and architecture in Israel has revealed that research has yet to read the relationship between the 'Israeli Project' practice, and the ‘aggressively’ transformed Palestinian domestic space, tectonics, making and its shaping factors. Furthermore, the current literature reveals misunderstanding of the traditional Palestinian architecture’s essence, its consistency, its intrinsic values and its evolutionary shaping factors. The thesis discovers that the traditional Palestinian house before 1948 had evolved in accordance with the evolution of Palestinian settlements; the Early/Pre-Form (nomadic), the Fluctuating-Form (rise and fall regularly), Emergence (birth), Deforming (into a better form or condition), Metamorphoses (complete homogenous village form), Heterogeneous Form (annexing of outsiders, group of interests), and the Ascendant Form (the urban). The thesis notably develops a thorough reading of the asymmetrical power or the intercultural relations between the Israeli order and Palestinian architecture and the spatial practice post-1948, integrating postcolonial discourse, and explores a range of critical issues through the concepts of 'dichotomy', ‘hybridity’, ‘third space’, ‘resistance’ and the ‘in-between’. During the last three decades, more and more Palestinians have embraced their culture in resistance to obliteration, exclusion and meltdown. As the thesis examines, an important aspect of this resistance is evidenced in crucial changes in the spatial boundaries of Palestinian dwellings, evolving from a space of inaction or reaction, to a space of action, thereby departing from a long history of cultural diffidence towards a new experience of resistance – towards a 'fourth space’.

This inquiry aims to comprehend the poetics of Spanish bailaor and choreographer Israel Galván (born in Sevilla, 1973) and its significance in the context of the transformations flamenco dance underwent for the last few decades. In the present work, ethnography is the elected method of research; accordingly, data gathering was carried out by means of participant observation, interviews, and the analysis of both audiovisual and photographic records. By going over the data –with analytic emphasis on the footage material from the opening night of ¡Mira! Los zapatos rojos, performed on stage in 1998– it is possible to isolate certain features of this particular work by Galván which were being cultivated by the artist throughout his career. From this investigation, the following can be singled out: the salience of subjectivity; the body, construed as the choreographic research’s very core; the artist’s own breaking free from flamenco’s choreographic structure, and, by doing so, his inception of concepts borrowed from contemporary dance and arts. Galván has developed a unique language and, with his innovations, has invigorated flamenco’s repertoire with new movements and ideas. For all these reasons, he stands as one of the most revolutionary choreographers in the genre.

Résumé :
This study is dedicated to exploring the different types of, and motives for constructive nonviolent action that in direct connection to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine are being implemented by young Israelis. The initiative is based on the belief that hope, recognition and support is highly important for the effectiveness of constructive nonviolent action, by an interest to explore the existing and functioning methods of constructive nonviolent action in an ongoing conflict area and by the will to show the specific conflict in Israel and Palestine from a perspective of positive initiatives taken by active youth. Through in-depth qualitative semi-structured interviews, the perceptions, thoughts and motives that these individuals hold concerning their actions, the reasons to why they are active and the influence that they believe their work might have on the wider society has been explored. Discoursive analysis has been implemented in order to gain a deeper understanding of these narratives and the results found provided an interesting insight into the scene of constructive nonviolent action in Israel as well as a multifaceted diversity within the sample of participants. These results can be used to present an illustration of the complexity of the current political situation in Israel, as well as an example of the many different methods and types of constructive nonviolent action that these young active Israelis choose to engage in.
