However, their reverence for male writers revealed how conflictive their identities as writers were, and it was an impediment to the establishment of a serious women's literary tradition. Résumé :
The Scottish Orientalist Vans Kennedy (1784–1846) was active in oriental linguistic scholarship during the beginning of the 19th century. Kennedy traveled to Bombay in 1800 as part of the East India Company army (Bird 1848). Due to his pre-existing interest in languages and his role as Persian interpreter, Kennedy was also accepted as a member of the Bombay Literary Society (later the BBRAS) in 1817. Simultaneous with his military career, Kennedy published texts on various oriental topics, his language studies concerning Persian, Hindustani, ‘Maratha’, and Sanskrit. However, Ludo Rocher (1989: 621), noted that Kennedy’s ‘writings have had little impact on the development of Indian studies’. Ignoring the newer trends in philology as practiced by his German contemporaries, Kennedy aimed to categorize the world’s languages based on their affinities (Van Hal 2012: 47). His attempt is based on W. Leibniz’s hypothesis that languages provide information on the origins and migrations of peoples (Van Hal 2014: 200). He furthermore fits into the larger context of the Scottish orientalists who, under the tutelage of Dugald Stewart, contributed to a philosophical history of mankind (Rendall 1982: 51). In the end, Kennedy’s goal was to illustrate that a comparison of languages would lead to the conclusion that Sanskrit was the mother of various European languages, and that this language had originally been spoken in Babylonia. Kennedy’s significance lies in the fact that he represents a branch of English orientalism which largely lost its scientific respectability (Trautmann 1997). I will therefore primarily focus on how Kennedy used language to trace the origin of peoples, and how he placed himself in the philological tradition he encountered in literature, and the scholarly reality in which he lived.

‘Italy’ discusses the essential features of the 16th-century Italian Renaissance garden—terraces, symmetry, statues, water, and a balance between constructed and natural materials—that were to influence gardens all over the world both in layout and in content. The two best-known surviving gardens of 16th-century Italy are Villa d’Este in Tivoli and the Boboli Gardens in Florence. The design of Italian gardens through the 17th and 18th centuries is also considered, when there was a greater French influence. Many gardens became derelict during the political and economic difficulties of a fragmented Italy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but the past forty years have witnessed the restoration of many Renaissance gardens.

The German army's campaigns against the Herero and Nama peoples between 1904 and 1907 were the result of the sum of several dynamics that defined their development: Western military culture, the emergence of Total War, German military doctrine, and biological racism linked to the cultural revolution that took place in Europe in the last decades of the 19th century. However, the defining factor in its development was the international position of the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. The result was not only the defeat of two indigenous peoples, but also the first genocide of the 20th century. However, this genocide was not a planned action but the result of the German military's inability to defeat the indigenous warriors. After the victory of the Kaiser's soldiers, the imperial general staff was unable to draw any lessons from this colonial war, despite the limitations of the concept of the decisive battle, the cornerstone of its military doctrine.

The Industrial Revolution of the 19th century had a profound effect on the way the wars were fought. Historians often refer to the American Civil War (1861-65) as the first genuine modern war. History has shown that the effects of technological advances in industry are processes which follow the revolution in the history of war. Napoleon's military campaigns formed the basis of formal military education and lidership in the Western world. Wars as a social phenomenon were more effective through the use of the first modern railways, roads, and warships, which in most military operations changed

The analysis of old Russian and foreign maps and plans of Sevastopol, created in the 19th century, showed that already in the first decades after the founding of the city the gully (overgrown ravine) called Ushakova Balka became a full-fledged urban element, along with residential areas, industrial areas, and military fortifications. After the founding of Sevastopol, Ushakova Balka underwent very significant changes in all components of the landscape, both because of belligurative transformations and under the influence of economic activities associated with the proximity of city blocks, the c

Résumé :
The castle of Piazza Armerina in Sicily is a historic landmark that dates to the second half of the 14th century. It was erected by King Martin I, likely on a preexisting Franciscan monastery. The history of the manor is incomplete, particularly until it was converted into a prison in the early 19th century. This function, which lasted until the 60s of the 20th century, involved several changes in its original layout. Further abandonment has led to a gradual decline and to important instability phenomena. The purchase by private individuals in 2017 renewed interest in the monument and launched

As if Afghanistan’s recent takeover by the Taliban was not a sufficiently significant development in the AfPak region, reports indicate that Pakistan’s largest sect, the Barelvi, becomes increasingly militant and aggressive by the day. Since another important movement for the history of Pakistan - the Deobandi - has generally dominated the violence scene in Pakistan starting with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, this trend within the Barelvis is a rather new one, and deserves extensive attention keeping in mind the recent regional developments. Taking a brief look at the history of the regi
