Texte intégralENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South Africa, black-back jackal (BBJ) predation of sheep causes heavy losses to sheep farmers. Different control measures such as shooting, gin-traps and poisoning have been used to control the jackal population; however, these techniques also kill many harmless animals, as they fail to differentiate between BBJ and harmless animals. In this project, a system is implemented to detect black-backed jackal faces in images. The system was implemented using the Viola-Jones object detection algorithm. This algorithm was originally developed to detect human faces, but can also be used to detect a variety of other objects. The three important key features of the Viola-Jones algorithm are the representation of an image as a so-called ”integral image”, the use of the Adaboost boosting algorithm for feature selection, and the use of a cascade of classifiers to reduce false alarms. In this project, Python code has been developed to extract the Haar-features from BBJ images by acting as a classifier to distinguish between a BBJ and the background. Furthermore, the feature selection is done using the Asymboost instead of the Adaboost algorithm so as to achieve a high detection rate and low false positive rate. A cascade of strong classifiers is trained using a cascade learning algorithm. The inclusion of a special fifth feature Haar feature, adapted to the relative spacing of the jackal’s eyes, improves accuracy further. The final system detects 78% of the jackal faces, while only 0.006% of other image frames are wrongly identified as faces.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Swartrugjakkalse veroorsaak swaar vee-verliese in Suid Afrika.

First responders deal in their daily lives with danger, working under pressure, exposing themselves to stress and fatigue for extended periods, which has a negative impact on their lives and health. In this context, using new solutions based on wearable technologies, sensor networks and mobile devices raises the opportunity to provide closer monitoring, aiming at detecting hazard conditions and supporting rst responder teams in the eld. However, very few solutions exist addressing such synergistic use of these emergent technologies to support integrated team monitoring. In this dissertation we propose a conceptual software architecture (TeamMonitor) for information aggregation, analysis and dissemination towards eld-action teams monitoring. TeamMonitor is supported in the notion of central coordination nodes that are responsible for data aggregation from multiple sources (e.g.: several rst responders professionals) and subsequent analysis work ows, including basic data processing (e.g.: running biosignal alarms detectors) and data stream relay to external clients. The central node decouples the IT network from the data providers network. This support is provided by a biosignal acquisition and analysis framework we developed, the BIOSal module. To illustrate TeamMonitor feasibility, we implemented a proof-ofconcept application, the DroidJacket, in which the TeamMonitor central node is instantiated in an Android mobile device. DroidJacket is able to monitor up to four VitalJacket R devices (a wearable garment for individual monitoring) providing both the support to relay the aggregated signals data to remote clients and an early detection of potential alarms based on real-time processing of the acquired data. Unlike other common approaches, we rely on the mobile device processing capabilities for the base-station. We implemented a basic algorithm for heart wave QRS complex and arrhythmia detection in DroidJacket, using the electrocardiogram acquired from the VitalJacket units. DroidJacket demonstrates that incorporating mobile devices in the team monitoring scenario is a reasonable option nowadays and the concept can be extended and adapted to more realistic scenarios like re ghter monitoring.

We present the design and implementation of the Conductor's Jacket, a unique wearable device that measures physiological and gestural signals, together with the Gesture Construction, a musical software system that interprets these signals and applies them expressively in a musical context. Sixteen sensors have been incorporated into the Conductor's Jacket in such a way as to not encumber or interfere with the gestures of a working orchestra conductor. The Conductor's Jacket system gathers up to sixteen data channels reliably at rates of 3 kHz per channel, and also provides mcal-time graphical feedback. Unlike many gesture-sensing systems it not only gathers positional and accelerational data but also senses muscle tension from several locations on each arm. The Conductor's Jacket was used to gather conducting data from six subjects, three professional conductors and three students, during twelve hours of rehearsals and performances. Analyses of the data yielded thirty-five significant features that seem to reflect intuitive and natural gestural tendencies, including context-based hand switching, anticipatory 'flatlining' effects, and correlations between respiration and phrasing. The results indicate that muscle tension and respiration signals reflect several significant and expressive characteristics of a conductor's gestures. From these results we present nine hypotheses about human musical expression, including ideas about efficiency, intentionality, polyphony, signal-to-noise ratios, and musical flow state. Finally, this thesis describes the Gesture Construction, a musical software system that analyzes and performs music in real-time based on the performer's gestures and breathing signals. A bank of software filters extracts several of the features that were found in the conductor study, including beat intensities and the alternation between arms. These features are then used to generate real-time expressive effects by shaping the beats, tempos, articulations, dynamics, and note lengths in a musical score.

Texte intégralThe work described in this thesis deals with analytical and experimental aspects of water-film cooling, jacket cooling and internal cooling, which are the three predominant types of fermentation cooling found in the South African wine industry. During the past decades questions were constantly raised concerning the thermal efficiency of equipment used in the above mentioned types of fermentation cooling. These questions were particularly asked when a wine cellar expanded operations, or after product damage had occurred. The thesis presents the work that was carried out along the following aspects: 1. The building of models which will enable simulation of each type of fermentation cooling under different running conditions for various sizes of available equipment. 2. The experimental work on all three main types of fermentation cooling under different running conditions to confirm the validity of the mathematical models. 3. The comparison of analytical or predicted results of the performance (cooling capacity, pressure drop and effectiveness of the three types of fermentation cooling) with the experimental or measured values.

This doctoral thesis it is base on the application of the cool vest jacket during 15 minutes after two different fatigue protocols, one under normothermia (22 ºC) and the other other under hyperthermic conditions (33ºC) to assess which are the physiological responses and also neuromuscular and cinematic performance. We have studied soccer specific abilities, with evidences of being reduced because of the fatigue appearance, such as sprints, jumps and kicks. Also it has been analyzed injury prevention under kinematic basis, assessing ligament loading during drop jumps and the properties of contraction of the biceps femoral with tensiomiography. Besides, we researched the physiological recovery under hyperthermic conditions, the effect during heart rate recovery and blood lactate concentracion. During the different researchers we demonstrate how the cool vest jacket improves skin temperature reduction after two different fatigue protocols and does not provoke any reduction of performance after his application. Therefore, the athlete is able to commence the following series of physical activity with some neuromuscular and physiological values to the beginning of the activity, compared with the participants that did not use the cool vest jacket during the rest period, showing reductions at some of the abilities valued.
