Résumé :
Taro corm is consumed in Haiti as a sustain against malnutrition, but no study was so far reported about Haitian taro. An ongoing breeding program, aimed at supporting corm production, includes the present investigations on taro. Eleven taro accessions sampled in 9 departments of Haiti were tested at Torbeck from January to August 2018. Seven variables were considered and treated with SPSS. Significant (p < 0.05) differences appeared for three of the seven considered traits. Corm marketable yield varied from 2.97 to 12.79 t/ha (p<0.05), the locations with the largest yield being Coteaux (South department, 12.79 t/ha), Petite- Riviére de Nippes (Nippes department, 7.56 t/ha) and Jacmel (South East department, 7.01 t/ha). Corm marketable yield was significantly (p < 0.001) and directly related with weight of corm per plant (ρ = 0.999), leaf length (ρ = 0.924) and leaf width (ρ = 0.795). Haitian taro cultivars were divided in three separate clusters. The largest differences concerned taro accessions from Grande Rivière du Nord and Coteaux. The results of this study show that accessions from Coteaux, Petite Riviére de Nippes and Jacmel should be recommended in the plant selection program to increase corm production in Haiti. Keywords: Taro, marketable yield, diversity, cultivars, Haiti.

Résumé :
The movement of people and capital around the world necessitates that we explore the ways in which women interact with food through varying enterprises. Many of these activities are considered “off the books” or part of a shadow or underground economy. This alternative economic space usually involves otherwise law-abiding citizens who seek to provide for their families in ways that fall outside the formal economy. This ethnographic project examines four female street-food vendors of Jacmel, Haiti. This project considers what happens when the underground becomes the primary means of survival. Some could argue that the “informal system” reinforces a traditional patriarchy gender performance, yet the women reveal a system that sustains community and provides food for the masses in a more efficient and effective way than the government-sponsored programs while simultaneously encouraging a sense of agency, support, and a highly developed community networking system.

Abstract 19 Background: Project Medishare launched a breast cancer program in Port-au-Prince in 2013 at the request of local partners. In 2015, the program was expanded as part of a national breast cancer treatment program with Equal Health International. With the mission of strengthening Haiti’s Ministry of Health (MSPP) cancer care infrastructure, the program seeks to decentralize cancer care for women living up to eight hours driving distance from Port-au-Prince by building hospital capacity for cancer screening, diagnosis, chemotherapy and hormone therapy provision at outlying hospitals. Methods: In 2013, two physicians and three nurses were trained to handle, mix and administer chemotherapy by American nurses and doctors. To expand the national program in January 2015, 20 additional physicians and 32 nurses from all ten geographic regions underwent a three-day training in Port-au-Prince on treatment algorithms and practical training for breast cancer. As patients came in for treatment at the local institutions, Project Medishare nurses were on site to supervise mixing and administration of chemotherapy. Physicians continued their practical training via telemedicine to confirm treatment plans and dosage calculations. Results: By September 2015, onsite practical training and chemotherapy had occurred at the primary public hospitals in Gonaives, Jacmel, and Les Cayes. One physician and three nurses were fully trained at each site and seven patients with breast cancer have been treated thus far at the new sites. Future efforts will focus on quality improvement and continuing onsite training at the other hospitals as well as encouraging more doctors and patients to utilize regional programs instead of coming to the capital for treatment. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first regularly-operating multi-site chemotherapy program in a low-income country. Our experiences may inform others to expand already established protocol-based cancer programs in low-resource settings. Next steps include working with MSPP to expand chemotherapy access to Cap-Haitien and to launch breast reconstruction programs through similar trainings in Port-au-Prince. Résumé :
✓ The motion at each intervertebral level permitted by the halo jacket and the thermoplastic Minerva body jacket was compared in 10 ambulatory patients with an unstable cervical spine. The thermoplastic Minerva body jacket is a new lightweight modification of a Minerva jacket which is fabricated from Polyform (a splinting material made of a polyester polycaprolactone) and Polycushion (a closed-cell foam for padding). Each patient served as his/her own control. The average movement from flexion to extension at each intervertebral level was significantly less in the thermoplastic Minerva body jacket (2.3° ± 1.7°) than in the halo jacket (3.7° ± 3.1°) (p < 0.0025). This difference is attributable to the “snaking phenomenon” encountered with halo jacket immobilization and should be taken into account when considering an external splint for an unstable cervical spine. The thermoplastic Minerva body jacket also offered a substantial improvement in comfort for the patient over that experienced in the halo jacket. The apparent advantage with respect to stability and comfort of the thermoplastic Minerva body jacket over the halo jacket suggests that the former device is the orthosis of choice for ambulatory stabilization of most patients with an unstable posttraumatic cervical spine injury.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to explore the potential for mass customization with fit and size issues using 3D technology in men's jacket development. The study tested a fit mass customization process that employed 3D body scanning and 3D virtual simulation technology and the results are summarized as follows. First, the fit evaluation for the final virtual jacket was improved from the first virtual jacket. Second, during the virtual jacket evaluation process, the participants made various requests to change the fit of their virtual jacket. The large-size group made more requests for alterations to their virtual jackets than the medium- and small-size groups. Third, the study underlines certain improvements needed before the technology can be used for apparel mass customization. The chest circumference, back width, and sleeve length of the real jacket each tended to be slightly tighter or shorter than that of the virtual jacket. Fourth, the study suggests that the jacket made from the mass customization process was satisfactory to potential male consumers, as the actual jacket from the mass customization scenario in this study was evaluated as being better than a ready-to-wear jacket. 3D technology is identified as an innovative tool for future tailors and the menswear industry, particularly aimed at young male consumers. The current study shows the potential for the use of this technology for menswear development.

Résumé :
This paper presents the investigation of on-body transmission single-band diamond dipole antenna with three different jackets. The jackets are named as normal jacket, grounding jacket and waveguide jacket. The on-body transmission is measured using two flexible single-band antennas attach to the jackets. A man with the height of 180 cm and 75 kg weight becomes as a model for the real measurement. The measurement is conducted in small space area by using portable network analyzer with flexible network cable. The measurement results show that the best performance for on-body transmission is with waveguide jacket. 10 dB transmission improvement is archived when the antenna is placed above the waveguide jacket compared to the normal jacket. It is found that the transmission of the antenna is also depends on the antenna orientation and further transmission lossess occur when the antennas are placed above the grounding jacket.

Résumé :
In order to evaluate the flow field characteristics of a marine diesel engine cooling water jacket, and provide a theoretical basis for further optimizing the water jacket structure. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to calculate the three-dimensional flow field of the water jacket. Based on the CFD simulation model of the engine water jacket, the analysis of pressure field, velocity field, streamline distribution and flow uniformity of water jacket of diesel engine under rated condition were carried out. The results show that: the total pressure loss of water jacket is 30.3 kPa, in which the pressure loss of cylinder block is 8.4 kPa, and the one of cylinder head and outlet manifold is 21.9 kPa, which indicates that the flow resistance design of the cylinder block and head is reasonable; the flow rate of coolant in the nose zone of cylinder head is above 1.5 m/s, which meets the cooling demand of cylinder head; the cooling water flows circumferentially in the engine block water jacket, and the flow dead zones are easily formed by the mutual extrusion and collision of the water flows; the outlet of the cylinder head water jacket is connected with the outlet manifold at right angle, which leads to large energy loss of the flow field; the maximum non-uniformity of flow rate of water jacket of each cylinder is 5.85%, which can be further optimized by adjusting the position of water jacket inlet.

New prosthetic nucleus which consisted of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) jacket and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel core was prepared and studied. The hydrogels with similar size were encased in polyethylene jacket of different dimension. Studies indicate that with the decrease of jacket dimension, swelling time of prosthetic nucleus increases, the equilibrium water content and volume change ratio decrease. Differential Scanning Caborimetry (DSC) analysis shows that increasing the jacket dimension results in a slight increase of non-freezable bond water and significant increase in free water. The prosthetic nucleus with larger jacket has better stress relaxation property due to the plasticization of non-freezable water. These results suggest that the dimension ratio of jacket to core at 1.19-1.35 is the most suitable for artificial nucleus pulposus

Résumé :
Stress and fracture analysis of ceramic-lined cannon pressure vessels is described, for a Si3N4 or SiC liner and A723 steel or carbon-epoxy jacket and with an initial residual interface pressure between liner and jacket and pressure applied to the bore. Room temperature stresses for a steel jacket over ceramic are similar to those for a carbon-epoxy jacket, but both radial and hoop jacket stresses can exceed typical carbon-epoxy strength values. Elevated temperature liner stresses are reduced for a carbon-epoxy jacket, due to the effective increase in interface pressure caused by differential thermal expansion. Critical crack sizes for brittle fracture are generally very small, albeit larger for Si3N4 than SiC due to lower liner stresses and higher fracture toughness for Si3N4.

Résumé :
Using detailed field study observations of the side–striped jackal ( Canis adustus ) and a simple stochastic model of the transmission dynamics of the virus and host demography, we discuss the epidemiology of rabies virus infection in the jackal population of Zimbabwe. Of the two jackal species in Zimbabwe, the other being the black–backed jackal ( Canis mesomelas ), the bulk of notified rabies cases are in side–striped jackals. Specifically, we show that the side–striped jackal population itself does not seem able to support rabies infection endemically, i.e. without frequent reintroduction from outside sources of infection. We argue that this is probably because the overall average jackal population density is too low to maintain the chain of infection. This study suggests that the disease is regularly introduced to jackals by rabid dogs from populations associated with human settlements. Given the rapidly rising dog population in Zimbabwe, estimates are derived of the future incidence of jackal rabies based on different dog vaccination scenarios.

Résumé :
Abstract Context: Cooling jackets are a common method for removing stored heat accumulated during exercise. To date, the efficiency and practicality of different types of cooling jackets have received minimal investigation. Objective: To examine whether a cooling jacket containing a phase-change material (PC17) results in more rapid postexercise cooling than a gel cooling jacket and a no-jacket (control) condition. Design: Randomized, counterbalanced design with 3 experimental conditions. Setting: Participants exercised at 75% V˙o2max workload in a hot climate chamber (temperature = 35.0 ± 1.4°C, relative humidity = 52 ± 4%) for 30 minutes, followed by postexercise cooling for 30 minutes in cool laboratory conditions (ambient temperature = 24.9 ± 1.8°C, relative humidity = 39% ± 10%). Patients or Other Participants: Twelve physically active men (age = 21.3 ± 1.1 years, height = 182.7 ± 7.1 cm, body mass = 76.2 ± 9.5 kg, sum of 6 skinfolds = 50.5 ± 6.9 mm, body surface area = 1.98 ± 0.14 m2, V˙o2max = 49.0 ± 7.0 mL·kg−1·min−1) participated. Intervention(s): Three experimental conditions, consisting of a PC17 jacket, a gel jacket, and no jacket. Main Outcome Measure(s): Core temperature (TC), mean skin temperature (TSk), and TC cooling rate (°C/min). Results: Mean peak TC postexercise was 38.49 ± 0.42°C, 38.57 ± 0.41°C, and 38.55 ± 0.40°C for the PC17 jacket, gel jacket, and control conditions, respectively. No differences were observed in peak TC cooling rates among the PC17 jacket (0.038 ± 0.007°C/min), gel jacket (0.040 ± 0.009°C/min), and control (0.034 ± 0.010°C/min, P > .05) conditions. Between trials, no differences were calculated for mean TSk cooling. Conclusions: Similar cooling rates for all 3 conditions indicate that there is no benefit associated with wearing the PC17 or gel jacket.

Résumé :
In order to research the cooling performance of engine water jacket, the CFD method and the software Fluent were used to analyze and optimize the capability. After building and meshing the three-dimensional jacket model, the coolant flow distribution and heat transfer coefficient distribution in jacket were obtained by simulating, and the deviation between simulation results and experimental data dose not exceed 5.3%. The current imbalance problem of heat transfer in water jacket was studied, and an optimization scheme was proposed according to the analysis of flow distribution in each cylinder water hole. The result of optimization program analysis and comparison indicates that the water jacket cooling performance has been significantly increased, the overall structure of water jacket is more reasonable, and these make engine get better cooling.

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate the effect of adhesive interlining on the appearance of tailored jackets with different rigidity. Design/methodology/approach – Four tailored jackets having the same pattern and fabric and three different adhesive interlinings or no adhesive interlining were prepared as experimental samples. Criteria and characteristics for assessing jacket appearance were investigated in sensory tests. A paired comparison of the jacket appearance was conducted using a ranking method. Smoothness and constriction values were proposed and obtained using three-dimensional shape data. The smoothness value refers to the degree of wrinkling on the jacket surface and the constriction value refers to the degree of constriction of the waistline. A quantitative assessment model of jacket appearance was proposed using multiple regression analysis. Findings – The sensory test reveals that the number of wrinkles, acceptability of wrinkling and degree of constriction of the waist are important criteria in the assessment of jacket appearance. The smoothness value for the front body and the constriction value of the waist partially agreed with the normal scores of sensory test results. Sensory evaluation values for the entire jacket appearance were estimated employing multiple regression analysis with the constriction and smoothness values. The values of jacket appearance estimated using multiple regression analysis were in good agreement with the sensory test results. Originality/value – Criteria and characteristics to be used in the assessment of the appearance of a jacket with adhesive interlining were clarified. Employing the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict jacket appearance for different adhesive interlinings, quantitatively.

Résumé :
Partial expiratory flow-volume (PEFV) curves in infants are generated by applying a compressive pressure over the chest wall with an inflatable jacket. This study addresses two issues: pressure transmission to and across the chest wall and whether flow limitation can be identified. Eleven infants sedated with chloral hydrate were studied. Pressure transmission to the chest wall, measured with neonatal blood pressure cuffs placed on the infant's body surface, was 72 +/- 4% of jacket pressure during compression maneuvers. The pressure transmission to the air spaces, determined by measuring airway pressure during a compression maneuver against an occluded airway, was 56 +/- 6% of jacket pressure. A significant amount of the applied pressure is therefore lost across both the jacket and chest wall. Rapid pressure oscillations (RPO) were superimposed on static jacket pressures while expiratory flow was measured. Absence of associated oscillations of flow measured at the mouth was taken to indicate that flow was independent of driving pressure and therefore limited. Flow limitation was demonstrable with the RPO technique in all infants for jacket pressures greater than 50 cmH2O; however, it was evident at jacket pressures less than 30 cmH2O jacket pressure in four infants with obstructive airway disease. The RPO technique is a useful adjunct to the compression maneuver utilized to generate PEFV curves in infants because it facilitates the recognition of expiratory flow limitation.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to clarify changes in the appearance of a ready-made tailored jacket due to changes in the ease allowance and determine suitable ranges of the ease allowance for the jacket. Design/methodology/approach Images were taken of the front, side and back of a jacket placed on a dress form with varying sizes of bust, waist and hips. The authors observed the appearance of the jacket for the different sizes of the dress form. A sensory evaluation of the suitable range of ease allowance for the jacket involving 20 female Japanese university students was carried out. The evaluation items were the fit, beauty, comfort and purchase intention. Findings The jacket appearance was lowly evaluated if there were many wrinkles and highly evaluated if there was a curved silhouette. Changes in bust, sleeve and waist parts affected the evaluation of the suitable ranges of ease allowance. The suitable range of ease allowance varied depending on the jacket part and viewing direction. In terms of fit, the suitable ease allowance ranged between 5.6 and 9.9 percent for the bust, between 7.6 and 17.8 percent for the waist and between 2.6 and 8.6 percent for the hips. The suitable ranges were determined considering the wrinkling and silhouette in these parts. Originality/value Suitable ranges of ease allowance of a tailored jacket were determined by evaluating a jacket for 11 dress form sizes of the bust, nine sizes of the waist and seven sizes of the hips, at 2 cm intervals. The obtained suitable ease allowance ranges are useful to manufacturers in terms of garment design and to customers in terms of selecting suitable garments.
