Green, Sarah-Jane. « Karen Horney : a psychobiographical study ». Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1008374.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This psychobiography on the life of Karen Horney is an exploratory-descriptive study that aims to explore and describe Horney's life structure development according to Daniel Levinson's (1996) theory of adult development. The method of research uses a qualitative single-case research design that studies her life over her entire lifespan and highlights the individual characteristics of Horney in a holistic manner within her socio-historical context. A purposive sampling procedure was used to select Karen Horney as the subject of the research and only published data was analyzed in the research. Multiple sources of data are used to obtain the information in this research, including an autobiography and three biographies written by three different authors. This data is organized according to the temporal sequence of her lifespan and the developmental periods and time frame of Levinson's theory. Horney's life is described and explored to highlight those areas of her life that conform to the developmental theory and those aspects of her life that are not included in the theoretical constructs of Levinson 's theory. By exploring the significant relationships that Horney developed throughout her life with family, friends, work colleagues, community and religious affiliations, and the important issues in her development, this study verifies Levinson's theory by corroborating his conceptualisation of adult development as a process of sequential stages divided into four main eras of development, linked by three periods of transition. A shortcoming of Levinson's theory relates to his omission of self-esteem issues and religious concerns as relevant factors experienced during the era of pre-adulthood and spiritual concerns during the era of late adulthood.

Williams, Veronica A. « Karen–Burmese Refugees’ Cultural Perception of Formal Education ». Thesis, NSUWorks, 2017. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_etd/118.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In the U.S. the population continues to diversify as refugees find residence within its borders. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Refugee Resettlement Statistics (2012) of those refugees fourteen thousand and twenty identified themselves as Karen refugees from Burma. In the context of education, teachers are confronted with the language development of English Language Learners (ELLs). At the researchers school site the ELLs population include; immigrants, refugees, and Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE). Although it is known that refugee students have limited formal education, which creates difficulty for them to access content and develop their English language proficiency (Decapua, Smathers, & Tang, 2009), there was a paucity of data of the cultural differences of Karen refugees’ parents experiences with formal education systems compared to those of other refugees. The researcher conducted an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) case study grounded in sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1978) with the aim to analyze the personal experience of Karen refugee women who relocated to an urban city located in the northeastern United States as parents of students in the U.S. public school system. After the conclusion of the study following dominant themes arose: family, limited formal education, communication and cultural representation. One major implication constituted the need for inclusion of families’ and students’ cultural knowledge into school systems and curriculum. Considering the cultural gap, it is important that teacher training programs and administrators prepare teachers with strategies for incorporating culturally responsive teaching practices into their pedagogy. Another implication of the study was communication between multilingual refugee families and American schools. Institutions working with refugee communities should prioritize interpreting and translation.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Japanese composer and pianist Karen Tanaka (b.1961) gained international recognition for her compositions during the 1980s and has become a significant composer of the twenty-first century. Her works have been performed by distinguished international ensembles and encompass various genres including orchestral, chamber, solo instrumental, choral and electroacoustic music as well as sound design. Tanaka’s fourteen solo piano works comprise a variety of styles and levels of difficulty. Among her solo piano works, Water Dance (2008) and Techno Etudes (2000) exemplify her unique approach to minimalism. This document includes analyses of rhythmic and melodic content, harmonic layering, and other musical devices to demonstrate how Tanaka creates a distinctive compositional language within a minimalist style in these two works. Only few scholarly studies exist regarding her works in English or Japanese; the purpose of this study is to introduce and provide resources about Tanaka and her works.

Résumé :
Anthony Comstock was a moral crusader who abhorred all things lewd and obscene, and who was successful in introducing the Comstock Law to help his fight against it. His lifelong battle against vice at the end of the nineteenth-century had an impact on literature and the literary world as it transitioned from Victorian prudery to modernist realism. Comstock’s influence negatively affected publishers, distributers, and writers, in particular, canonical Americans Walt Whitman and Theodore Dreiser. His methods were unconventional, and in the name of morality, Comstock often behaved immorally to achieve his goals of protecting youth from being corrupted by obscenity. The question of the value of censorship was present then, as it still endures today, and centered on the potential harm of viewing or reading obscene materials. Although Comstock presented an impressive record of confiscations and arrests, his crusade did not have a lasting effect beyond the fin de siècle.

Résumé :
The goal of this study was to investigate the career counselling needs at a school in a deprived community. High School learners form part of the future workforce that will influence this country's economy. Therefore it is necessary to focus on the development of a workforce that has the basic skills. Career counselling is therefore seen as the field of education by means of which these skills need to be addressed, but to present successful career counselling, the needs of the learners and teachers have to be taken into consideration. The staff and pupils of a Secondary School from a deprived community in Potchefstroom were used for the purposes of this study. The group consisted of 15 participants in total, of which 10 were pupils (6 girls and 4 boys) in grades 10 to 12, and 5 teachers (4 ladies and 1 gentleman). In order to determine the participants' experiences with regard to Career Counselling, qualitative research methodology was used by means of phenomenological principles in interviews. A specific effort was made to give an account of the extent and nature of this need, as well as to determine what the pupils' needs for Career Counselling are and what the limitations are for the teacher regarding career counselling. The results showed that pupils see career counselling as important and that they have a need for this field of education, that the current career education sessions at school do not fulfil their needs for career guidance, that learners indicate that they have specific needs regarding career guidance, that their peers show indifference towards receiving career guidance and also that their career choices are influenced by their home backgrounds. Furthermore the results showed that the teachers acknowledge the importance of career counselling at schools, the need for better career guidance, that certain factors exist that influence career guidance in a negative way and also that they have specific needs regarding career guidance.

Vermeulen, Karen. « Musikale karakterisering in Benjamin Britten se opera Billy Budd / Karen Vermeulen ». Thesis, North-West University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/927.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Musical characterisation plays an important role in Britten's operas. The aim of this study was to determine how Britten depicts the diverse, dualistic characters in Billy Budd through music. Ambiguity, which is characteristic of this opera, is the result of the manner in which the plot is portrayed musically through developing motives. The conflict between the diverse characters in Billy Budd is depicted by the thematic material. The musical ideas and motives change as the plot becomes more complex. The method of investigation was, in the first instance, to analyse the musical ideas associated with each character. Second, the manner in which these ideas change through the course of the opera was pointed out. The story does not only concern itself with the relationship between good and evil. The fate of the three main characters, Billy, Vere and Claggart, is precisely the opposite of their true nature. Who they really are, is not reflected in their doings, as depicted by the integrated themes. Billy, the innocent boy, kills. Vere, the father figure, doesn't protect Billy on the day of his conviction. Claggart, who manipulates to have his own way, can't avoid his own death. This study shows that Billy is represented by the stammer figure and Vere by the "Starry Vere" motive. Vere's inner conflict is depicted by the ambiguous combination of a major third and minor third interval. The confusion that eventually leads to Billy's demise is represented by intervals of a perfect fourth, associated with Claggart. During the course of the opera, Vere's music is infiltrated by Claggart's motives. Billy is represented in the opera by the woodwind instruments, Vere by the strings and Claggart by the brass instruments.

Debusigne, Birgitte Blomquist Mme. « The literary image in print and film : Karen Blixen (1885-1962) ». Nice, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1989NICE2025.

The initial idea was to study how a literary image was materialized in print and on film. Karen Blixen who can be classified as an author of tales treats time and space in order to appeal to the reader's mental participation so that his imagination is ignited and he witnesses a unique experience referring to a common memory. The printed image - despite a limited presentation through a single image - can function in the same way. The reader reacts upon the codes proposed by the cover by completing it in his mind and going beyond. Except when the economic interest is more important than the aesthetic research. The images which make out the film can be guided very closely by the writtent details. However, time and space are different mainly because the image is realised and therefore determined. The scriptwriter's subjective production bring the spectator into a state of fascination. He does not have to complete images since they are completed at the end of the film. In any case, there is an impossibility to render the written language by the two other techniques

Résumé :
This thesis contributes to the decolonisation of health promotion by examining Indigenous-led health promotion practice in an urban setting. Using critical ethnography, the study revealed dialogical, identity-based approaches that centred relationship, community control and choice. Based on the findings, the thesis proposes four interrelated principles for decolonising health promotion and argues that Indigenous-led health promotion presents a way to bridge the rhetoric and practice of empowerment in Australian mainstream health promotion practice.

Methods: In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with 37 Karen-Burmese persons living in the U.S. Local bilingual, bicultural researchers conducted the interviews with respondents recruited from the DCBoH TB clinic and surrounding communities in DeKalb County, Georgia. Both qualitative and quantitative strategies were used to analyze the data. Results: We found that the levels of knowledge pertaining to TB varied greatly. There were few perceptions that were statistically significant among gender and recruitment sources. Also, misconceptions were common in regards to TB transmission and low perceptions of risk. The respondents did request TB education in various formats such as videos and television. Some reported difficulties at the DCBoH included lack of interpreters, limited transportation, and clinic hours. Conclusions: Some of the perceptions of the Karen-Burmese towards TB can be addressed through education. To begin this process it is recommended that the DCBoH TB program provide language-appropriate services that enable both clients and staff members to effectively focus on all concerns regarding TB. Extended clinic hours and transportation would also be helpful for Karen clients. It is important that the staff receives continuous training in cultural competency and an overview of potential misconceptions that this population may embrace.

Résumé :
The focus of this study is on the management of change in a public school, namely Hoerskool Secunda in the town of Secunda, Mpumalanga. Teaching staff as well as management team members are confronted with many changes in performing their duties on an everyday basis. It is therefore, very important that a school and its staff members are prepared and informed about changes that need to be implemented in the near future. At this stage, changes are managed well with regard to the time and motivation available for their implementation. However, these changes and the unexpected abruptness with which they are sometimes announced can have a detrimental effect on the school's organisational culture and the motivation levels of the staff members. The main aim of the study is to measure and interpret measurement of the organisational culture of the school and to determine whether the school will be able to handle the implementation of changes effectively, based on the measured organisational culture. This aim is supported by three objectives, which are: • To define the term organisational climate in an organisation (in this study, the school). • To interpret the results obtained from the measurement. • To make recommendations in the form of a plan to handle the management of change in this school. From the literature it is established that the organisational culture of any organisation is very important in determining the resilience with which the organisation will be able to handle change. It is stated more than once that an organisation with an established set of values and effective transformational leadership to guide it will be more effective in implementing and managing change effectively. It also became evident in the literature study that the principal as leader of the management team has a very important role to play in the change management process. Principal succession should therefore be planned and managed carefully. Finally, the literature also revealed that all the stakeholders in the school environment should be informed and involved in the change management process in order for it to be successful and sustainable. Hoerskool Secunda's organisational culture was measured using a questionnaire after which the results were processed and feedback was provided to the staff members and the management committee of the school. From the results of the questionnaires it was established that the current organisational culture of the school is overall very positive. A few concerns were identified within the specific dimensions that were measured and based on these concerns, recommendations were made to the management team of the school with regard to dealing with these concerns. The recommendations that were made should enable the school to address those issues that contribute to perceptions of uncertainty about the direction the school is moving towards in the direct future. This, in turn should enable the school management team to ensure alignment with the vision and mission of the school as well as create a positive, motivating culture where every staff member can function optimally in doing his/her best in the main purpose the staff members of the school have : to teach effectively!
