Résumé :
Purpose: The main objective of this study was to investigate the impact of fund transfer agencies to liquidity management of KPLC.Methodology: A descriptive case study research design was used. The population for the study included all the 82employees in the KPLC Mombasa Branch. A sample of 57 respondents was selected from the population using a stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was the preferred data collection instrument. The data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistics such as mean, mode and median. Results: The study findings showed that there was a gradual decline in the average collection period. This implied an improvement in the average collection period of KPLC Mombasa over the year 2002 to 2010. In addition, the number of fund transfer transaction increased over the study period. This implied that the fund transfer transactions may have impacted on the average collection period. Further, according to this study it was possible to infer that there was a gradual increase in the acid test ratio. This implied an improvement in the acid test ratio of KPLC Mombasa over the year 2002 to 2010. In addition, the number of fund transfer transaction increased over the study period. This implied that the fund transfer transactions may have impacted on the acid test ratio.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that KPLC should engage more fund transfer agents in facilitating bill payments. Specifically, KPLC should engage more banks, Saccos, western unions and mobile operators. This is because such an approach would improve the average collection period and acid test ratio further. The study was purely descriptive; it therefore lacks the statistical rigor that would establish causation between fund transfer agencies and average collection period as well as the acid test ratio. Therefore, the study recommends a regression analysis to establish causation between dependent and independent variables.

Résumé :
The government of Kenya has been trying to expand the electricity grid for decades, with little success—80% of Kenyans are still living without access to the grid. An alternative solution, off-grid solar lighting products, such as solar lanterns and solar home systems, increasingly provide Kenyans with decentralized clean energy. Kenya’s private sector market for off-grid solar lighting products has been developing since the 1980s, yet the key to rapid market growth was the introduction of a pioneering pay-as-you-go business model in 2011 that made solar products affordable for poor rural customers. Today, with almost 30% of all off-grid households using some type of off-grid solar lighting products, Kenya is a market leader. Other factors that have encouraged market growth include the massive need for power in areas where grid electricity is not available, the high cost and unreliability of grid power where it is available, a value-added tax exemption on solar products, numerous education and awareness campaigns, and expensive kerosene. However, poor quality products present a major challenge. This challenge will have to be overcome for the market to reach its full potential and to ensure that these products represent an effective and lasting lighting solution.

Résumé :
This study presents a Techno-economic assessment of a renewables based power generation project for PS 21, a Pumping Station for Kenya Pipeline Company located in Nairobi, Kenya. The load for the pumping station is 1135 kW Continuous. The assessment criteria used was levelized cost of energy. The hybrid renewable energy system software HOMER was used for assessment, and modeling was done using hourly TMY data for solar irradiance and wind.  According to the results, Hybrid Solar PV-Wind- Battery renewable energy systems can supply adequate power for pumping station purposes. Optimization modeling at 2010 prices gave a levelized cost of energy of $0.2 per kWh for the most optimal solution which consisted of 2 No. 1650 kW Vestas V 82 Wind Turbines and 4070 kW of PV modules. This cost of energy just matches the purchase price from the National grid which varies between $0.14 and $0.2 per kWh, and therefore, the project is economically feasible. Mainly due to concerns of global warming, the view in the Kenyan government and society towards renewable energy is very favorable and  the project is also politically and socially feasible.   Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that wind energy is more viable than solar PV energy in areas of high wind speeds, with about 7.5 m/s annual average wind speeds.   The results show that the levelised cost of energy may be significantly decreased in future due to the fact that the cost of PV modules is progressively reducing. Payments for CERs under CDM mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol would lower the levelised cost of energy further. The Project was found to be feasible.

Résumé :
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a modern fleet management system in improving the logistics of transporting staff, goods and materials in Kenya Power & Lighting Company, a utility firm in power distribution. In today’s competitive marketplace which is characterised by rapidly changing business requirements, leveraging leading edge technologies and adopting best practices are essential in order to ensure sound logistical support that guarantees both effectiveness and efficiency in the transportation processes. The sampling procedure of one-stage, cluster sampling and the use of the simple random sampling technique were used in this study to select a sample size which was sufficiently representative of the whole population. Both the descriptive study approach and the survey research strategy were adopted to enable the collection of data in a manner that allowed in-depth examination while gathering information that explained the relationships between constructs, in particular, cause and effect relationships. The main purpose of this dissertation was therefore to establish that the use of information technology is feasible in transport industries, explain possible obstacles and also any major advantages of its implementation. Secondly, as regards the theoretical aspect, a broadened view on the use of online tracking for vehicles using a global positioning system is presented, together with practical examples, to illustrate its successful implementation in a fleet management system. The study concludes by offering suggestions and recommendations from the research results and the researcher’s experiences for future studies.

Due to climate change, energy conservation and carbon emission reductions have become a goal of each country. Most of governments in the world put a lot of efforts on their policies and declarations to achieve this goal, including the development of reusable energy, encouragement or subsidies for energy saving and carbon emission reductions on lighting products. LED luminous efficiency is constantly improving and increasing gradually. Therefore the rise of the LED lighting can be expected. Currently LED lighting in the markets must be equipped with a power supply board. It can maintain the luminous flux output steadily. However, the cost of the power supply board is still high, it is 30% of the cost of LED lighting products, and affected the LED luminous efficiency. This study is primarily researching and discussing technology developments and product strategy of the LED lighting power supply boards. The focus is between environmental and energy conservation laws versus International Safety Standards in the world. From the industry distribution layout and profile of LED lighting industry in the cross-strait to realize the importance of the power supply boards on LED lighting products. Also, we interviewed designers and suppliers of case company and utilized SWOT analysis, Product Life Cycle, Value Chain and Five Forces analysis to explore the products competitive strategy. The main findings of this study is that LED lighting industry will rise, The condition is not only the energy efficiency regulations and the rise of environmental awareness, but also the replacement of the traditional lighting should not be too high in price and acceptable by consumers. Therefore, the structure cost of LED Lighting needs to be reduced and the development of new technology in order to accelerate to replace the conventional lighting products. The research findings and recommendations can provide the domestic industry references for the future developing niche and products.

Waititu, Paul. « Employees of Kenya power's perceptions of their adoption and implementation of online internal communication tools for relationship building ». Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18256.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to explore and describe Kenya Power employees’ perceptions of their adoption and implementation of online internal communication tools as a means of creating and managing long lasting relationships among all employees in the organisation. The theoretical point of departure for this study was framed within online internal communication and relationship management while principles of e-government were also considered. A single case study design was adopted for the study which combined both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques while data was triangulated using an online self-administered questionnaire, focus group moderator’s guide and an interview schedule. The results guided by the theoretical criteria indicate that the implementation of online internal communication tools was done at Kenya Power without considering the internal stakeholders’ needs and preferences. The consequence is that employees have developed negative perceptions about internal online communication resulting in low adoption for relationship management activities. The findings of this study could be useful for other public sector organisations in that it will help them to positively change employees’ perceptions as well as enhance the implementation and adoption of internal online communication tools for the purposes of relationship building which could result in better internal communication and public sector services.

Résumé :
Office work has so far been carried out in company buildings and was largely based on the use of paper on a horizontal surface. Due to multiple reasons, more workers are working in their homes with electronic devices. As a result, both the working environment and personal tools are changing. Since the discovery about 20 years ago of the non-visual ways of light absorption, it was known that apart from the image forming effects (IF) of light from which the criteria for correct lighting have been developed, non-image forming effects (NIF) of light exist. The discovery of NIF has enhanced researcher belief in the importance of daylighting and has raised new criteria to be taken into account for proper interior lighting. Due to all the factors mentioned above, the parameters to be met by a luminaire and its environment for proper lighting of the workstation have been modified and expanded. The rapid advance in the development of new light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires with which the spectral power distribution (SPD) can be practically created opens the door to a genuine technological revolution comparable to the invention of electric lighting around 150 years ago. The authors of this study will review the latest published studies on the importance of light in our lives, IF and NIF effects of light, the parameters which from these effects are suggested to be taken into account for a correct indoor lighting, the regulations in force on indoor lighting workplaces, and proposals to improve indoor lighting and therefore the quality of life of workers.

Résumé :
When Edison introduced his new-fangled electric-lighting system, he found a receptive audience. The public, the press, and even his competitors— with the possible exception of the gaslight industry—recognized that here was a technology of the future. Alexander Graham Bell, on the other hand, had a tougher time. In 1876, just three years before Edison would create a practical light bulb, Bell’s invention of the telephone fell flat. “A toy,” his detractors huffed. What good was it? The telegraph already handled communications quite nicely, thank you, and sensible inventors should be trying to lower the cost and improve the quality of telegraphy. Indeed, that’s just what one of Bell’s rivals, Elisha Gray, did—to his everlasting regret. Gray had come up with a nearly identical telephone some months before Bell, but he had not patented it. Instead, he had turned his attention back to the telegraph, searching for a way to carry multiple signals over one line. When Gray eventually did make it to the patent office with his telephone application, he was two hours behind Bell. Those two hours would cost him a place in the history books and one of the most lucrative patents of all time. Some months later, Bell offered his patent to the telegraph giant Western Union for a pittance—$100,000—but company officials turned him down. The telephone, they thought, had no future. It wasn’t until the next year, when Bell had gotten financing to develop his creation on his own, that Western Union began to have second thoughts. Then the company approached Thomas Edison to come up with a similar machine that worked on a different principle so that it could sidestep the Bell patent and create its own telephone. Eventually, the competitors combined their patents to create the first truly adequate telephones, and the phone industry took off. By 1880 there were 48,000 phones in use, and a decade later nearly five times that. More recently, when high-temperature superconductors were first created in 1986, the experts seemed to be competing among themselves to forecast the brightest future for the superconductor industry.

« th at originates in neighboring countries has been recognized as a cause of well water problems. The Swedish government has alerted home owners to the danger, and even subsidized the purchase of home water treatment systems [5]. In New York, where the Adirondack lakes continue to be affected by acid rain. Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) announced it will no longer sell its pollution rights to Midwestern or Southeastern power companies [6]. Recently many states, including Connecticut, have passed electric deregulation bills. This encourages large scale users to purchase the cheapest power available. Some citizens are concerned this will increase the burning of coal in plants without pollution controls and lead to more acid rain. Perhaps the only recourse for citizens will be to come together and initiate Federal court actions to prevent downwind environmental damage. References ». Résumé :
Abstract In low income countries, existing drip irrigation systems are cost prohibitive to many smallholder farmers. Companies are working to develop efficient, low-cost irrigation systems by using technologies such as positive displacement (PD) pumps and pressure compensating (PC) emitters. However, these two technologies have not been paired in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Here we describe a proof-of-concept pump control algorithm that demonstrates the feasibility of exploiting the physical relationship between the input electrical power to a PD pump and the hydraulic behavior of a system of PC emitters in order to determine the optimal pump operating point. The development and validation of this control algorithm was conducted in partnership with the Kenya-based irrigation company SunCulture. This control method is expected to reduce cost, improve system efficiency, and increase accessibility of irrigation systems to smallholder farmers.

Résumé :
An optical sensor system extends gas temperature measurement capability in turbine engines beyond the present generation of sensor hardware for production engines. The sensing element incorporates a thermally emissive insert to generate an optical signal proportional to the gas temperature at the tip of the probe. The use of a sapphire lightguide allows operation above the melting point of nickel based alloys. Sensor development for aircraft turbines has included flight hardware for use on the Fiber Optic Control System Integration (FOCSI) Program sponsored by NASA Lewis Research Center. The optical probe harness measured exhaust gas temperatures in a General Electric F404 engine. Signals from four probes were optically combined at a single detector assembly to determine the average gas temperature. A comparison of optical and thermocouple temperature measurements was conducted during a preflight engine test. The durability of the probe design has been evaluated in an electric-utility operated gas turbine under the sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute. The temperature probe was installed between the first stage rotor and second stage nozzle on a General Electric MS 7001B turbine at Houston Lighting and Power Company. Two probes have been used in the field test and they have a combined total of 4660 hours of operation near 1600°F and 330 starts.
