AbstractZen students described their experiences when working with koans, and a phenomenological method was used to identify the structure of those experiences. Zen koans are statements or stories developed in China and Japan by Zen masters in order to help students transform their conscious awareness of the world. Eight participants including 3 females and 5 males from Southern California with 1 to 30 years of experience in Zen answered open-ended questions about koan practice in one tape-recorded session for each participant. Reflection yielded the following thematic clusters: (a) motivation, (b) approaches to working with koans, (c) experiences while working with koans, (d) experiences of insight into koans, (e) working with a teacher, and (f) transformation. Participants described positive transformations including better control of emotions and concentration, better awareness of prejudices and biases with the ability to suppress those types of habitual associations, and a new relation to and acceptance of spiritual questions and doubts.

Pengendalian gulma air eceng gondok (Eichhornia crassipes) dengan ikan koan (Ctenopharyngodon idella) akan meningkatkan kesuburan perairan sebagai akibat sekresi dari ikan koan yang dikeluarkan di air. Penelitian mengenai pengaruh perambanan eceng gondok oleh ikan koan terhadap kesuburan perairan, N, P, dan kelimpahan fitoplankton di Danau Limboto perlu dilakukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh perambanan ikan koan terhadap kesuburan perairan (N, P) dan kelimpahan fitoplankton di Danau Limboto. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan percobaan menggunakan perlakuan pakan eceng gondok pada ikan koan. Rancanganpercobaan dengan rancangan acak lengkap dengan tiga ulangan dan satu kontrol. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa laju perambanan ikan koan dengan kepadatan 100, 200, dan 400 ekor dengan biomassa eceng gondok 10 kg mempengaruhi peningkatan produktivitas perairan atau kesuburan (N dan P) dan kelimpahan fitoplankton. Kepadatan ikan koan 200 ekor adalah kepadatan yang paling efektif untuk pengendalian eceng gondok dibanding kepadatan 100 dan 400 ekor. To control of waterhyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) using grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) was fertilized in waters because of excresi of grass carp. The research is to knowed effect of grazing of grass carp to waterhyasinth to productivity and abundance of phytoplankton in Limboto Lake. Reseach Metodology is used experiment with rendom completed desaign with three treatmen with three replycation and one kontrol. The result each showed treatmen of stocking density 100, 200, 400 fish each cage, and fitoplankton abundance, stocking density 200 fish is cage increasing productivity, fitoplnkton abundance of lake. The treatmen stocking density 200 each cage Increased productivity of lake most effective to control waterhyacinth than stocking density 100 and 400 fish/cage.

Koan fish has a good taste with white flesh, very chewy and thick in all parts of its body. As an alternative to the koan fish test, the dosage of seed feeding is done in full with a frequency of 3 times a day at intervals of feeding every morning, afternoon, evening. Koan fish seeds that have been 60 days old since hatching are entered into the research aquarium according to their respective treatments. During the maintenance period, watering and changing are carried out every 3 days to maintain the maintenance of water quality is maintained properly. Penyiponan is done by suctioning the debris that settles in the bottom of the aquarium that comes from fish faeces but it is also carried out by changing the water by removing maintenance water as much as 75% of the initial water volume, then replaced with new water as much as the volume of water that has been discharged. For taking a fish sample that will be measured length and body weight gain is done once every ten days namely on days 0, 10, 20 and the last on the 60th day. Based on the results and research the effect of different plant-based aquatic plant feeding. gives no significant effect on the growth and survival of koan fish (C. idella), the best growth of absolute weight of koan fish (C. idella) is in treatment D, which is 1.38, followed by treatment A (1, 08 grams), then treatment B (0.71 gram) and treatment C (0.52 gram). the highest absolute length growth was found in treatment D that is equal to (9.41 mm) followed by treatment A (3.80 mm), then treatment B (0.66 mm) and treatment C (0.55 mm).AbstrakIkan koan memiliki rasa yang enak dengan dagingnya yang berwarna putih, sangat kenyal dan tebal di seluruh bagian tubuhnya. Sebagai alternatif budidaya ikan koan uji yang di lakukan adalah Dosis pemberian pakan benih dilakukan secara kenyang dengan frekuensi pemberian sebanyak 3 kali sehari dengan interval waktu pemberian pakan setiap pagi,siang, sore. Benih ikan koan yang telah berumur 60 hari sejak menetas dimasukan kedalam akuarium penelitian sesuai dengan perlakuan masin-masing Pada masa pemeliharaan dilakukan penyiponan dan pergantian air setiap 3 hari sekali untuk menjaga kualitas air pemeliharaan tetap terjaga dengan baik. Penyiponan dilakukan dengan menyedot kotoran-kotoran yang mengendap di dasar akuarium yang berasal dari feses ikan selain itu juga dilakukan pergantian air dengan cara membuang air pemeliharaan sebanyak 75% dari volume air awal, kemudian diganti dengan air yang baru sebanyak volume air yang telah dibuang. Untuk pengambilan sempel ikan yang akan diukur pertambahan panjang dan bobot tubuhnya dilakukan setiap sepuluh hari sekali yaitu pada hari 0, 10, 20 dan yang terakhir pada hari ke – 60. Berdasarkan hasil dan penelitian pengaruh pemberian pakan nabati Tumbuhan Air yang berbeda. memberikan pengaruh yang tidak berbeda nyata terhadap pertumbuhan dan kelangsungan hidup benih ikan koan (C. idella), Pertumbuhan bobot mutlak benih ikan koan (C. idella) yang terbaik terdapat pada perlakuan D yaitu sebesar 1,38 selanjutnya diikuti oleh perlakuan A (1,08 gram), kemudian perlakuan B (0,71 gram) dan perlakuan C (0,52 gram). pertumbuhan panjang mutlak tertinggi terdapat pada perlakuan D yaitu sebesar (9,41 mm)selanjutnya diikuti oleh perlakuan A (3,80 mm), kemudian perlakuan B (0,66 mm) dan perlakuan C(0,55 mm).Kata Kunci : Ikan Koan, Pemberian Pakan Nabati Tumbuhan Air, Pertumbuhan, Kelangsungan Hidup.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peranan organisasi Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan (THHK) dalam bidang pendidikan di Batavia tahun 1900-1908. Melalui pemahaman mengenai organisasi Tiong Hoa Hwee Koandalam pendidikan, diharapkan dapat menambah wawasan mengenai organisasi Tionghoa yang mempunyai peranan penting dalam perkembangan pendidikan. Metode yang digunakan yaitu metode historis. Adapun yang pertama dilakukan adalah mengumpulkan berbagai sumber dan bukti tertulis sejarah yang terkait mengenai organisasi Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan melalui arsip-arsip, buku-buku serta artikel yang terkait dengan organisasi tersebut.Kemudian melakukan kritik sumber untuk menguji keaslian dari data-data yang diperoleh, lalu penafsiran data-data yang sudah terkumpul agar dapat ditulis menjadi suatu karya ilmiah secara sistematis dan dapat dipertanggungjawabkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa adanya perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi setelah organisasi ini berdiri dalam bidang sosial maupun pendidikan. Organisasi Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan mengubah tata cara adat istiadat dan bahasa yang melekat pada masyarakat Tionghoa peranakan. Organisasi ini juga membuat lembaga pendidikan formal untuk anak-anak keturunan Tionghoa yang di beri nama Pa Hoa. Kesimpulan yang diperoleh berdasarkan proses interprestasi sumber ialah adanya peranan organisasi Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan terhadap pendidikan di Batavia.

Zen is a way of understanding our true self as human before any concept is produced by the thinking mind. This true self can be perceived, when we let go all of forms of concepts and abstractions, and move to the realm of intuition. In this sense, intuition is direct experience of reality without the mediation of any kind of concepts or abstractions. The Zen tradition offers two ways to help people achieve this state of mind, namely Zazen (sitting meditation) and Koan (interview with the Zen Master). The awareness of the true self, or intuition, can be seen also as the state of enlightenment. This is the true freedom. This paper examins Zazen and Koan practices in the Zen tradition critically, and looks at how both can contribute to the development of human life. This paper presents and discusses the dates of two Koan silver issues, drachms with young Herakles/crab and club in incuse, and hemidrachms with Apollo/lyre. A date in the 190s BC is suggested on several grounds. Weights and diameters correspond with those of HI XII and XIII of the 3rd century, suggesting that the issues discussed here followed shortly thereafter. The other Koan silver issues of the 2nd century were minted on a lower weight-standard. The IGCH 1320 hoard contains examples of both issues, and the other Koan issues in it date to the middle and second half of the 3rd century or the 190s/c. 190. Groups of homonyms occur in issues dating to the end of 3rd/early 2nd century. A connection with Kalymnos seems likely for the hemidrachms, and this may suggest a date early in the 190s during the war with king Philip V of Macedonia.

AbstractThis paper considers genetic engineering in the context of Buddhist ethics. Rather than considering a standard set of ethical approaches, this paper instead uses the “fox koan” of Zen Buddhism to explore the dynamics and consequences of the “genetic project”. Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang komunikasi pemasaran Viral Marketing dalam menciptakan brand awareness bisnis UMKM studi kasus Kopi Kwang Koan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh word of mouth digital atau exposure yang dilakukan influencer di media sosial instagram dalam menciptakan brand awareness dan efeknya terhadap perkembangan bisnis secara umum. Objek penelitian terdiri dari dua kedai kopi etnis yakni Kedai Kwang Koan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif secara deskriptif yaitu dengan melakukan wawancara terhadap Johny Poluan selaku pemilik sebagai narasumber utama dan melakukan pengamatan terhadap pengunjung Kedai Kopi Kwang Koan.

Title (Bahasa Indonesia): Pertumbuhan ikan koan (Ctenopharyngodon idella) yang diberi pakan Azolla This research was done for two months to analyze the growth of grass carp (length 7.00-10.00 cm and initial weight 5.00-10.00 gr) fed on pellets with azolla meal that replaces fish meal on different levels and fresh azolla. Experimental research methodology used Completely Randomized Design. The best result wasshowed on treatment using fresh azolla. This is to confirm that using azolla on young stages for culture of grass carp can be done to reduced cost of production.Penelitian dilakukan selama dua bulan untuk menganalisis pertumbuhan ikan koan (berukuran panjang 7,00-10,00 cm dan berat awal 5,00-10,00 gr) yang diberi pakan pelet dan subtitusi tepung azolla terhadap tepung ikan dengan kadar yang berbeda, serta azolla segar. Metode penelitian secara eksperimental, menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap. Hasil terbaik ditunjukkan pada perlakuan dengan pakan azolla segar. Hasil ini mengkonfirmasi, bahwa penggunaan azolla dapat dilakukan untuk budidaya ikan grass carp pada stadia benih dalam menekan biaya produksi.

The practical methods of studying Zen, known as ‘pure zazen’ and the ‘koan method’ of the Buddhist schools of Rinzai and Soto are subjected to comparative analysis. This study focuses on the comprehension of Zen philosophy, and also analyzes the basic attitudes regarding the difference from the old Buddhist schools in Japan: practical activity, self-improvememt and indifference to death come first, as well as new aesthetic norms and ideals. Simplicity, the absence of any authority, the absence of rituals and anti-intellectualism corresponded to the spirit of the era when the once unshakable moral values were collapsing. Comparing the two Buddhist schools, the authors of the article note that the distinguishing feature of Soto, founded in Japan by Dogen, is absolute immersion in the meditative practice of ‘Silent illumination of Zen’ (黙想 mokuso), which outlines the path to enlightenment through sitting meditation. At the same time the emphasis is placed on the fact that this is a complex and not fast process of passing through certain stages in comprehending the teaching. Rinzai Zen in Japan is most associated with learning through koan work, and the origin of this practice dates back to master Linji from the time of the Song dynasty, namely Daie Soko, who collected and arranged all the major koans in a specific order for ease of use. But the very practice of comprehending the teaching is distinguished by its rather harsh and cruel methods, since the teachers considered it necessary to tear the student out of everyday life and the fastest way is to hit or to shout at a person. It was this philosophical practice of Rinzai Zen that was spread in Japan by Eisai. As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that the masters of the Rinzai school proclaim the importance of ‘sudden enlightenment’, and the masters of the Soto school teach to follow the path of ‘progressive enlightenment’, and thus Soto and Rinzai become Zen schools that use opposite methods to achieve insight.

In some forms of Zen Buddhism, the aspiring student is given a problem to solve, whether it be a paradoxical koan, a probing question about the self, or some personal dilemma to which there appears to be no answer. This struggle of the student towards enlightenment is described as the creation in the student of a great mass or ball of doubt, called a daigidan. The more and more the student struggles with this problem, the more he or she becomes frustrated, lost, blocked, enmeshed and burdened down by this growing ball of doubt. Every examination of the problem reveals new difficulties; confusion ensnarls the world; the strings and strands of doubt multiply until the point is reached where everything in the universe seems to be entangled and paralyzed—all tied up in knots. Moreover, it is said that the greater the ball of doubt grows, the greater the moment of awakening when at last it finally comes. Into our hands, in our time, has been given a Great Ball of Doubt, perhaps the greatest ball of doubt there could possibly be: the Earth. It is an immense koan, the solution for which we are now, like Zen students, intensely and personally responsible: that is, our lives and futures depend on our being able to unravel the knots of its mysterious burden. The solving of such a mystery is internal to it (unlike a problem that stands outside of us), and the realization that the planet has finite boundaries has caused an “implosion of sensibility”—a vast cultural struggle between those who have internalized this finiteness, and those who still persist in believing in an infinite planet, with infinite resources, occupied by humans with infinite desires. Instead, in order to solve this immense all-engulfing koan, we are being driven into new (and sometimes very old) forms of planetary embeddedness and immanence, and away from flights to some kind of irresponsible imaginary ranscendence.

In the epigraphical Cretan corpus, four Hellenistic inscriptions relating to physicians are addressed to the cities of which these men were native (Kos, Kasos). The analysis of these texts throws light on their historical context; the linguistic comparison of the Cretan documents with Koan and Rhodian inscriptions (Rhodes controled politically the small island of Kasos )makes evident that Dorian koina and above all Attic-Ionic koine had penetrated into these dialects.

Professor Myungje Cho has been studying the impact of Buddhism on society during the Goryeo period. In his current research, he is exploring the significance of the History of Thought by reorganising the flow and character of Goryeo Buddhism as East Asian Buddhism and the History of Thought. Cho has shown that while Goryeo Buddhism demonstrated some influence from Song's Zen philosophy, it also maintained its own independent characteristics. In his analysis, Cho showed that the two phases of Goryeo’s adoption of Koan Zen, the spread of Wenzi Chan during the period of the 12th to 13th centuries, was followed by the popularity of Kanhua Chan amongst the Goryeo intellectuals in the 14th century. In his work, he sought to identify the phases of adoption of Goryeo’s Koan Zen and explain the factors for accelerating its spread and impact of the transmission on society. Cho analysed and clarified, for the first time, the main text and the flow of ideas of Zen Buddhism in Goryeo. His research also offers a way to understand Korean mediaeval Buddhism within a wider context of East Asian history of ideas through the literary analysis of Chinese literature published in Goryeo or Zen literature compiled in Goryeo Buddhism from the perspective of cultural history.

We compare the cognitive basis of satori, or the “realization of emptiness” at the heart of Zen Buddhist enlightenment, and with the mechanism whereby satori is most often evoked – a pedagogical relationship between master and student called “koan” – to modern artworks and the conception of aesthetic experience, noting structural and psychological similarity. Based on our previous work on this topic in art-perception (Pelowski & Akiba, 2011), we offer a cognitive model for satori’s consideration. We then discuss empirical evidence for art-induced satori, noting a correlation with a progression of cognitive and emotional factors suggesting a movement through all posited model stages and a major distinction from non-satori outcomes. We also note a positive correlation between satori and hedonic evaluations of beauty, art potency and importance, understanding of art and artist’s intention, change in subject self image and a fundamental shift in meaning analysis from a mimetic to an experience-based interpretation. This study, through the exploration of the underlying satori mechanism made explicit in the Zen koan and duplicated in modern art, suggests a universal nature to and means of exploring the insight underlying the satori phenomenon and opens a new avenue for cross-disciplinary/cross-cultural study of enlightenment.

To date, the pottery production of Rhodes, Kos and other ‘East Dorian’ islands and coastal areas remains little understood. This article presents and discusses new neutron activation analysis (NAA) of eighth–sixth-century bc vessels found on Rhodes and in related areas, placing them in the wider context of past and present archaeometric research. The results highlight the role of Kos as a leading regional centre of painted pottery production and export in the seventh–sixth centuries bc, notably of ‘East Dorian’ plates. This includes the famous ‘Euphorbos plate’, which can now be attributed to Koan production. Contemporary Archaic pottery workshops on Rhodes, in contrast, had a less ambitious, if diverse, output, ranging from vessels in a Sub-Geometric tradition, imitation Corinthian wares and modest local versions of Koan- and Ionian-style plates to finely potted and richly decorated ‘Vroulian’ cups and black-figured situlae. It was imported mainland and East Greek wares, however, that dominated the island's consumption of Archaic painted wares. This represents a departure from the preceding Geometric period, which was characterised by a local pottery production of considerable scale and quality, although receptivity to external influences remained a consistent feature throughout later periods. As patterns of demand were changing, the island's craft production appears to have concentrated on a different range of goods in which high-quality figured finewares played a lesser role.

Buddhist scriptures depict the female body according to two contrasting models. On the one hand, female flesh is the epitome of defilement that hinders proper salvation. Yet, on the other hand, the gestational body is employed as a metaphor and a model to depict the highest spiritual perfection of the Buddhist clergy. By investigating these two seemingly incompatible approaches, this article shows how these contrasting models coexisted within the same doctrinal framework in early modern Sōtō Zen secret sources. In particular, it explores a Sōtō Zen secret document from the early modern period entitled <em>Ise niji kirigami</em>, which provides the doctrinal foundation for salvific rituals directed to women who died during parturition. The peculiarity of this document is the combination of conceptualizations typically associated with female pollution with a wide range of theorizations mainly derived from esoteric discourse on the kami, the <em>Lotus Sūtra</em>, and Zen koan interpretations. Therefore, through the investigation of the affinities with koan exegesis, Buddhist scriptures, and kami-related theories, this article aims to broaden our understanding of the tools used by early modern Zen monks to theorize the female body and contribute to the ongoing debate on the representation of the female spiritual and corporeal condition in Buddhist sources.

Trata-se de um koan protobiográfico legado por Guimarães Rosa a seus leitores, que abarca o conjunto de sua obra e alcança sua morte enigmática, previamente anunciada em vários de seus escritos e em múltiplas declarações sábia e parcimoniosamente lançadas ao vento por meio de eficazes passadores de vozes. Para explicitar os elementos desse koan, e com apoio no último e conclusivo verso lançado por Rosa (“as pessoas não morrem, ficam encantadas”), o conto “Conversa de bois” será percorrido em busca de eventuais pistas de convergência temática, que prenunciariam o desenredo de Grande sertão: veredas e a morte-ressurreição de Guimarães, ocorrida exatamente três dias após a posse na Academia Brasileira de Letras. Buscamos responder à seguinte questão, no que se refere à pervivência: o que se pode inferir das alterações incidentes entre a versão original do conto (constante em Sezão, 1937) e a efetivamente publicada em Sagarana (1946)?Palavras-chave: João Guimarães Rosa; “Conversa de bois”; pervivência; “autobiografia irracional”.Abstract: We lay upon a hypothetical assumption which could never be entirely solved neither denied, leading itself towards its own Fortleben (Walter Benjamin) and immortality, throughout multi-level layers of critical interpretation and translations. Thus, the short story named “Conversa de Bois” will be crisscrossed in order to bring out some possible thematic convergent paths and clues. They would announce beforehand the final outcome of Grande sertão: veredas, as well as Rosa’s death-resurrection, precisely three days after his official entrance as a member into the Brazilian Academy of Literature. Pertumbuhan suatu individu adalah pertambahan jaringan akibat dari pembelahan sel secara mitosis. Pertumbuhan dipengaruhi oleh dua fakor yaitu faktor intrinsik (dalam) dan ekstrinsik (luar). Faktor intrinsik meliputi sifat keturunan, umur/ukuran, ketahanan terhadap penyakit dan kemampuan memanfaatkan makanan, sedangkan faktor ekstrinsik meliputi sifat fisik dan kimiawi perairan serta komponen hayati seperti ketersediaan makanan dan kompetisi.Selain itu pertumbuhan ikan juga dipengaruhi oleh padat penebaran. Padat penebaran merupakan satu diantara aspek budidaya yang perlu diketahui karena menentukan laju pertumbuhan, dan sebagai penunjang keberhasilan produksi hingga mencapai fase selanjutnya. Oleh karena itu, untuk mengetahui kepadatan optimal larva dilakukan penelitian mengenai padat tebar optimal dengan perlakuan 5 ekor/liter air, 10 ekor/liter air, 15/liter air, 20 ekor/liter air. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pada perlakuan 5 ekor/liter airmampu menghasilkan laju pertumbuhan harian sebesar 5.41%Kata kunci : Larva Koan, Kepadatan,Pertumbuhan
