The urgency of research is there are still many teachers who find it difficult to develop, establish, to adjust, and then set up to make the Learning Implementation Plan, the right one and according to the characteristics of teaching materials, the nature of teaching materials and student development in general. The purpose of this study is to improve the professionalism of teachers to make lesson plans through supervision of personal guidance. This type of research is the School Action Research which consists of four main stages namely planning, action, observation, the research subjects consisted of 11 teachers from SDN 91 / IX Rengas Bandung, which consisted eight civil governent of teachers and three governent of teacher contract. The success criteria is a percentage of 85% in general and individually. The results showed that the total score of 39.09 in the first cycle increased significantly to 44.55 in the second cycle, the percentage of success of teachers 78.18% in the first cycle increased to 89.09% in the second cycle. The results obtained in the second cycle means that the achievement of teacher professionalism makes the implementation plan of learning by 85% in general or individually, therefore, it can be concluded that the supervision of personal guidance can improve the professionalism of teachers to make a Learning Implementation Plan at SDN 91 / IX Rengas Bandung

Building Engineering Education becomes a vocational education institution that prepares competent and professional graduates in building engineering. The background of this research is from the problem of the learning process that is not in accordance with the business world and the industrial world (DUDI). Through this research to see the products in Building Engineering Education seen from the teaching factory components. The purpose of this research is to find out: (1) competence delivered, (2) completion time, (3) the product is required internally/ externally. (4) investment needs. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data used is the semester learning plan, college contracts and interviews. Sampling in this study using purposive sampling technique with snowball sampling technique. Based on the research results, it concluded that: (1) the competencies that are delivered from three managerial functions, namely learning planning in the form of semester learning plans (RPS) are following the existing planning stages; implementation of learning methods used project-based learning, (2) time for completion of the product processing process is completed on time according to the college contract, (3) products needed internally / externally, preferably the type of product that is in accordance with the market, (4) investment needs can be accepted in the market or used for further practice, the proceeds from product sales are allocated for maintenance and developments of tools.

ABSTRACT Facilities, vessels, and pipelines regulated under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90), whether owned by a major international corporation or a small local company, face organizational and technical difficulties in their efforts to comply with the Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (PREP). Response exercises are but one priority competing for the plan holder's time, personnel, and budget dollars. Operators typically lack the in-house expertise and staff to design and conduct effective exercises or to budget dollars to contract for outside support. These problems could adversely affect the plan holders and impact their ability to work within a unified command during a spill. This paper discusses the obstacles to maintaining an adequate level of preparedness through traditional exercises and describes a cost-effective, innovative approach to exercises. By working with other plan holders in the area to conduct a combination workshop and exercise for each participating company, each operator can reduce costs, improve the value of exercises, and exercise facility plans in a unique and highly focused manner. The paper discusses the key issues of designing scenarios for each plan holder in a multi-plan-holder exercise while maintaining the focus of the workshop, the value to the predesignated on-scene coordinator, and the synergistic effects of plan holders learning from one another.

Blockchain technology has recently inspired remarkable attention due to its unique features, such as privacy, accountability, immutability, and anonymity, to name of the few. In contrast, core functionalities of most Internet of Things (IoT) resources make them vulnerable to security threats. The IoT devices, such as smartphones and tablets, have limited capacity in terms of network, computing, and storage, which make them easier for vulnerable threats. Furthermore, a massive amount of data produced by the IoT devices, which is still an open challenge for the existing platforms to process, analyze, and unearth underlying patterns to provide convenience environment. Therefore, a new solution is required to ensure data accountability, improve data privacy and accessibility, and extract hidden patterns and useful knowledge to provide adequate services. In this paper, we present a secure fitness framework that is based on an IoT-enabled blockchain network integrated with machine learning approaches. The proposed framework consists of two modules: a blockchain-based IoT network to provide security and integrity to sensing data as well as an enhanced smart contract enabled relationship and inference engine to discover hidden insights and useful knowledge from IoT and user device network data. The enhanced smart contract aims to support users with a practical application that provides real-time monitoring, control, easy access, and immutable logs of multiple devices that are deployed in several domains. The inference engine module aims to unearth underlying patterns and useful knowledge from IoT environment data, which helps in effective decision making to provide convenient services. For experimental analysis, we implement an intelligent fitness service that is based on an enhanced smart contract enabled relationship and inference engine as a case study where several IoT fitness devices are used to securely acquire user personalized fitness data. Furthermore, a real-time inference engine investigates user personalized data to discover useful knowledge and hidden insights. Based on inference engine knowledge, a recommendation model is developed to recommend a daily and monthly diet, as well as a workout plan for better and improved body shape. The recommendation model aims to facilitate a trainer formulating effective future decisions of trainee’s health in terms of a diet and workout plan. Lastly, for performance analysis, we have used Hyperledger Caliper to access the system performance in terms of latency, throughput, resource utilization, and varying orderer and peers nodes. The analysis results imply that the design architecture is applicable for resource-constrained IoT blockchain platform and it is extensible for different IoT scenarios.

The study aims to develop the cycle of maslahah based performance management system (maslahah performa) implementation. Maslahah performa consists of 6 orientations are: worship orientation, internal process orientation, learning orientation, talent orientation, customer orientation and wealth orientation. The study is conducted through in-depth literature study of previous study related to the concept of maslahah, maslahah based performance management system, the balanced scorecard (BSC) and the quality management system. The study shows that maslahah performa can be applied with the foundation of PDCA cycle that is Plan - Do - Check - Action. Plan is developed into 5 steps: strategic planning, identifying the foundation of maslahah, determining the maslahah behavior, determining measures and agreeing the performance contract. Do is developed into performance implementation. Check is developed into monitoring process. Action is developed into corective and preventive action.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of numerous writings addressing quality performance-geared contracting (PC) and self-stated performance. Design/methodology/approach The study systematically reviewed 134 refereed papers across various fields published between from 2000 to 2018. A categorization framework of PC is suggested addressing fundamental dimensions of its plan and management. Findings The relative analysis of pertinent articles advancing interdisciplinary perspective encourages learning and provides knowledge about quality management in organizations especially at individual and organizational levels. Research limitations/implications The outcomes indicate that much of the present-day wide-ranging performance contracting studies do not have robust theoretical grounds. Studies are also inclined to certain theories for instance agency theory and play down other theories with the likelihood of contributing to quality management. Practical implications Performance contracting between citizens and public entities is important in that the written contract limits what the public entities, for instance, the government can and cannot do and informs on the rights and privileges of citizens, thus contracts to form the core of a free society. Originality/value This review demonstrates that performance contracting is useful in performance improvement if proper job design and contract management exist.

The result that got at the first stage was the formula of proofing ability and positive behavior on algebra structure with first module and model cooperative learning assisting concept media map that assumed effective, efficient in algebra structure. Module and model of this learning consist of the book of lecturing guiding (lecturing unity schedule, lecturing contract, and lesson plan), module, and book of students’ assignment.

Hal ini ditemukan pada mahasiswa yang mengambil mata kuliah Geometri Ruang yaitu dalam membuktikan soal-soal pembuktian (<em>problem to proof</em>). Mahasiswa masih menyelesaikan secara algoritmik atau prosedural sehingga diperlukan pengembangan perangkat pembelajaran Geometri Ruang berbasis kompetensi dan konservasi dengan model <em>Proving Theorem. </em>Dalam penelitian ini perangkat perkuliahan yang dikembangkan yaitu Silabus, Satuan Acara Perkuliahan (SAP), Kontrak Perkuliahan, Media Pembelajaran, Bahan Ajar, Tes UTS dan UAS serta Angket Karakter Konservasi telah dilaksanakan dengan baik dengan kriteria (1) validasi perangkat pembelajaran mata kuliah Geometri ruang berbasis kompetensi dan konservasi dengan model <em>proving theorem </em>berkategori baik dan layak digunakan dan (2) keterlaksanaan RPP pada pembelajaran yang dikembangkan secara keseluruhan berkategori baik.</p><p><em>Critical and creative thinking abilities of students still weak. It is found in students who take Space Geometry subjects that is in solving problems to to prove. Students still finish in algorithmic or procedural so that the required the development of Space Geometry learning tools based on competency and conservation with Proving Theorem models. This is a research development which refers to the 4-D models that have been modified for the Space Geometry learning tools, second semester academic year 2014/2015. Instruments used include validation sheet, learning tools and character assessment questionnaire. In this research, the learning tools are developed, namely Syllabus, Lesson Plan, Lecture Contract, Learning Media, Teaching Material, Tests, and Character Conservation Questionnaire had been properly implemented with the criteria (1) validation of Space Geometry learning tools based on competency and conservation with Proving Theorem models categorized good and feasible to use, and (2) the implementation of Lesson Plan on learning categorized good overall</em>. </p>

The datasets has taken from three types of general public such as city, town, and village for this research analysis. This research article is weighing up the rate of changes of productivity from the employees. Finally, this research work compares the learning method analysis includes prediction of rate of change of productivity from employees at city region. This prediction is computed by ML algorithm. Based on this prediction employers can improve and plan for their production and control the system in a better way.

Abstract Measuring consumer responsiveness to medical care prices is a central issue in health economics and a key ingredient in the optimal design and regulation of health insurance markets. We leverage a natural experiment at a large self-insured firm that required all of its employees to switch from an insurance plan that provided free health care to a nonlinear, high-deductible plan. The switch caused a spending reduction between 11.8% and 13.8% of total firm-wide health spending. We decompose this spending reduction into the components of (i) consumer price shopping, (ii) quantity reductions, and (iii) quantity substitutions and find that spending reductions are entirely due to outright reductions in quantity. We find no evidence of consumers learning to price shop after two years in high-deductible coverage. Consumers reduce quantities across the spectrum of health care services, including potentially valuable care (e.g., preventive services) and potentially wasteful care (e.g., imaging services). To better understand these changes, we study how consumers respond to the complex structure of the high-deductible contract. Consumers respond heavily to spot prices at the time of care, reducing their spending by 42% when under the deductible, conditional on their true expected end-of-year price and their prior year end-of-year marginal price. There is no evidence of learning to respond to the true shadow price in the second year post-switch.

The establishment and implementation of individual development plan can be used as one of the employees into the labor market determinants, even as an antecedent of promotion, rewards and incentives, through mutual commitment and mutually reciprocal relationship, enhance employees’ positive behavior and attitude. This study explores the relationship between individual development plan and learning attitude, and confirms the roles of psychological contract fullfillmemt and distributional justice. A total of 494 valid questionnaires from the traditional, technologic and service industries of southern Taiwan were collected. The results indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between individual development plan and psychological contract fullfillmemt; there is a significant positive relationship between individual development plan and learning attitude; psychological contract fullfillmemt partially mediates the relationship between individual development plan and learning attitude; the relationship between individual development plan and learning attitude will be stronger in high distributional justice. The results of this study not only can provide empirical studies of individual development plan, psychological contract fullfillmemt, distributional justice and learning attitude, but also proposes the related management practices recommendations for human resources management.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of Statistics South Africa's internship programme in developing the statistical skills of interns. A mixed method approach which included semi-structured interviews, document study and electronic questionnaires was used to gain insight into the thoughts and perceptions of 38 participants. The study revealed that many of the crucial elements for a successful internship programme are present in the current internship programme. It was also found that the interns do not get the opportunity to implement or utilize their skills in the areas in which they are being placed. The absorption and retention strategy also seems to pose a challenge for the internship programme of which the goal is to retain as many statisticians as possible. Finally, a proper absorption strategy, better and more formal assessments, and a higher salary level for interns being absorbed into the organization should also be consideredLanguage Education, Art and Culture

This chapter reviews the diverse roles that causal knowledge plays in reinforcement learning. The first half of the chapter contrasts a “model-free” system that learns to repeat actions that lead to reward with a “model-based” system that learns a probabilistic causal model of the environment, which it then uses to plan action sequences. Evidence suggests that these two systems coexist in the brain, both competing and cooperating with each other. The interplay of two systems allows the brain to negotiate a balance between cognitively cheap but inaccurate model-free algorithms and accurate but expensive model-based algorithms. The second half of the chapter reviews research on hidden state inference in reinforcement learning. The problem of inferring hidden states can be construed in terms of inferring the latent causes that give rise to sensory data and rewards. Because hidden state inference affects both model-based and model-free reinforcement learning, causal knowledge impinges upon both systems.

Many studies have considered whether parents play a role in either promoting or moderating their children’s engagement in relational aggression (also known as indirect or social aggression). This is not surprising, given the consistent parenting correlates of physical aggression in prior research. There is evidence of fairly regular correspondence between children’s relational aggression and their parenting and home environment. We comprehensively consider the range of existing studies that have considered parenting correlates, and we group similar studies together. While most studies have utilized social learning theory as the foundation for empirical inquiry, there are researchers who consider alternative theories (attachment, social cognition) and emphases (e.g., direct vs. indirect effects of parenting) in their consideration of individual differences for relational aggression. Parenting influences are also qualified by children’s differential susceptibilities (e.g., biological or temperamental variations). In considering all of these issues, the contrast with physical aggression is carefully observed.

From student protests over the teaching of canonical texts such as Plato’s Republic to the use of images of classical Greek statues in white supremacist propaganda, the world of the ancient Greeks is deeply implicated in a heated contemporary debate about identity and diversity. Plato’s Caves defends the bold thesis that Plato was a friend of cultural diversity, contrary to many contemporary perceptions. It shows that, across Plato’s dialogues, foreigners play a role similar to that of Socrates: liberating citizens from intellectual bondage. Through close readings of four Platonic dialogues—Republic, Menexenus, Laws, and Phaedrus—the author recovers Plato’s unique insight into the promise, and risk, of cross-cultural engagement. Like the Socratic “gadfly” who stings the “horse” of Athens into wakefulness, foreigners can provoke citizens to self-reflection by exposing contradictions and confronting them with alternative ways of life. The painfulness of this experience explains why encounters with foreigners often give rise to tension and conflict. Yet it also reveals why cultural diversity is an essential good. Simply put, exposure to cultural diversity helps one develop the intellectual humility one needs to be a good citizen and global neighbor. By illuminating Plato’s epistemological argument for cultural diversity, Plato’s Caves challenges readers to examine themselves and to reinvigorate their love of learning.

This book provides a historical account of the development and implications of early modern probabilism. First elaborated in the sixteenth century, probabilism represented a significant and controversial novelty in Catholic moral theology. Against a deep-seated tradition defending the strict application of moral rules, probabilist theologians maintained that in situations of uncertainty, the agent can legitimately follow any course of action supported by a probable opinion, no matter how disputable. By the second half of the seventeenth century, and thanks in part to Pascal’s influential antiprobabilist stances, probabilism had become inextricably linked to the Society of Jesus and to a lax and excessively forgiving moral system. To this day, most historians either ignore probabilism, or they associate it with moral duplicity and intellectual and cultural decadence. By contrast, this book argues that probabilism was instrumental for addressing the challenges created by a geographically and intellectually expanding world. Early modern probabilist theologians saw that these challenges provoked an exponential growth of uncertainties, doubts, and dilemmas of conscience, and they realized that traditional theology was not equipped to deal with them. Therefore, they used probabilism to integrate changes and novelties within the post-Reformation Catholic theological and intellectual system. Seen in this light, probabilism represented the result of their attempts to appreciate, come to terms with, and manage uncertainty. Uncertainty continues to play a central role even today. Thus, learning how early modern probabilists engaged with uncertainty might be useful for us as we try to cope with our own moral and epistemological doubts.

AbstractAs it has been already explained, it is very important for circular economies to minimize the wasted resources, as well as maximize the utilization value of the existing ones. To that end, experts can evaluate the materials and give an accurate estimation for both aspects. In that case, one might wonder, why is a decision support system employing machine learning necessary? While a fully automated machine learning model rarely surpasses a human’s ability in such tasks, there are several advantages in employing one. For starters, human experts will be more expensive to employ, rather than use an algorithm. One could claim that research towards developing an efficient and fully automated decision support system would end up costing more than employing actual human experts. In this instance, it is paramount to think long-term. Investing in this kind of research will create systems which are reusable, extensible, and scalable. This aspect alone more than remedies the initial costs. It is also important to observe that, if the number of wastes to be processed is more than the human experts can process in a timely fashion, they will not be able to provide their services, even if employment costs were not a concern. On the contrary, a machine learning model is perfectly capable of scaling to humongous amounts of data, conducting fast data processing and decision making. For power plants with particularly fast processing needs, an automated decision support system is an important asset. Moreover, a decision support system can predict the future based on past observations. While not always entirely spot on, it can give a future estimation about aspects such as energy required, amounts of wastes produced etc. in the future. Therefore, processing plants can plan of time and adapt to specific needs. A human expert can provide this as well to some degree, but on a much smaller scale. Especially in time series forecasting, it is interesting to note that, even if a decision support model does not predict exact values, it is highly likely to predict trends of the value increasing or decreasing in certain ranges. In the next sections, we are going to describe the four machine learning models that were developed and which compose the Decision Support System of FENIX. Section 8.1 describes how we predict the quality of the extracted materials based on features such as temperature, extruder speed, etc. Section 8.2 describes the process of extracting heuristic rules based on existing results. Section 8.3 describes how FENIX provides time-series forecasting to predict the future of a variable based on past observations. Finally, Sect. 8.4 describes the process of classifying materials based on images.

In recent decades, education systems have become challenging tasks. However, in the era of globalization, educational systems have to found a new approach of teaching and learning towards a more active and productive education. This chapter covers conventional teaching approach paradigm, which is teacher-centric, and a new paradigm, which is student-centric. In teacher-centric methods, teachers play significant roles in the learning process. Teachers are source of knowledge providers, facilitator, or evaluator to observe students to acquire the correct answers, yet students are considered as learners who passively receive information. In contrast, in the student-centric methods, students play a vital role in their learning course and resolve how to accomplish their required learning outcomes on their own. They also figure out their facts and are allowed to think critically. This chapter finds that this new paradigm could develop more active learners who have acquired the skills of problem solving, independent thinking, and autonomous learning.

This writing relates the professional and academic experience that was carried out in the field of Cultural, Natural, Material and Intangible Heritage, within the framework of updating the Development Plan of the Puebla- Tlaxcala Metropolitan Area. The part that is presented here is related to Natural Heritage. Although, heritage had already been considered in past plans and programs, on this occasion, the heritage is ordered, typified and categorized, using institutional planning instruments, the legal framework, even, only with official data. The topic adopts the official methodology that, through the demands and the terms of reference, the institutions formalize the contracted areas. Consequently, they ensure that research responds to institutionalized vision and mission. However, the official rigidity, the research group opened ways to approach the research from the four areas proposed by Querol (2000), in the cultural heritage management: knowing, controlling, planning and disseminating. Knowing and disseminating worked with lobbyists, those in charge of culture, tourism, as well as those responsible for religious buildings and archaeological sites. At the same time, control and plan were produced from the collective, sessioning as a seminar and workshop, this resulted in multidisciplinary learning that resulted in an updated interdisciplinary plan.

Video games and gamified applications have been used for various purposes including helping businesses (in commercial marketing), or helping the individual, community or society (in social marketing). Video games are systems with rules, play structures, and narratives; while gamified applications utilize game elements, mechanics, and ways of thinking to generate meaningful, playful and fun experiences. Both video games and gamified applications require a learning process including learning to play, and learning through the game. This chapter advocates that learning is an inherent component of video games and gamified applications. The main purpose of this chapter is to examine the concept of ‘game learning' from three major theoretical positions, namely Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism. In doing so, this chapter first explains, compares, and contrasts these three positions, then elaborates on how learning takes place in specific games designed for commercial and social marketing with the lens of these three positions.

One of the strengths of Spinoza’s philosophy is his recognition that what we can achieve politically depends in part on our affective capacities, an insight illustrated in his account of the distinction between ‘true religion’ and superstition. I argue that superstition, as Spinoza sees it, is an affective state. To be superstitious is to be subject to a pervasive and damaging kind of fear. False prophets, for example, harness the resources of imagination to encourage political division and superstitious anxiety. By contrast, defenders of true religion appeal to existing imaginative resources to foster devotion to God and promote cooperation. However, the boundary between these two strategies is far from distinct. Superstition may play a role in a harmonious way of life.

One thing that characterizes the OC is the respectful way OC teachers talk with kids. When two former OC teachers who had moved and now teach in different schools viewed a videotape of one of them teaching, the other was struck with how, after many years apart from each other, they still talk to kids the same way. Respectful conversations happen in the OC and in other schools where many exceptional teachers reach out and make connections with students. An OC teacher recounted an event that illustrates the contrast with other ways of interaction: . . . When a junior high school counselor came to register the kids in my room for junior high the next year, there was not an available table where she could sit with a small group. So I said, “Just a minute, I'll get you a space.” I asked a few kids who were working together at a table if we could use it for a while and then they could have it back. We teased each other a little and then the kids packed up their supplies and moved to work on the floor. The counselor said, “Is that how you talk to kids usually?” I said yes. She told me that in her school adults didn't treat kids like that at all— “There's hardly anyone who would have fun with kids, or even ask them for the table.” I was so stunned, I asked her what she would have done in that situation. She said she would have told them to just “move out, I need the table.” So there would have been no conversation. I asked her if that was the way the whole school interacted with children, and she said there was one person who talked just like me, and it turned out to be a former OC co-oper who now teaches there. . . . If the classroom structure allows conversations, people can learn to converse with respect. Children themselves can play a role in helping adults communicate with them.

Serious games are effective and engaging learning resources for people with disabilities, and guidelines exist to make games accessible to people with disabilities. During research into designing accessible interfaces and games, it was noted that people who are blind often report enjoying playing Wii Sports. These games are pick-up-and-play games for casual and non-gamers. They have simplified rules and a natural and intuitive feel. Games designed specifically for players with particular disabilities are often not of interest to other players and take a lot of development time. Because of their niche market, these games are not widely available, developed, or maintained. In contrast, games like Wii Sports are cheap and available, and represent an exciting opportunity as inclusive games. Two blind players were introduced to the games and found Wii Tennis the most accessible. The blind players learned to play the game quickly and easily, found it enjoyable and engaging, and could play competitively against each other, as well as a sighted opponent. Small accessibility enhancements of the existing game could enhance the game for other players. In this paper, implications for the design of accessible, inclusive games are discussed.

Climate changes play a significant role in the crops plantation process. Such changes affect the suitability of planting of many crops in their traditional plantation dates in a given place. In contrary, many of such crops become more suitable for planting at other new dates in their traditional places or in other new places regarding the climate changes. This chapter presents a fuzzy-based approach for optimizing crops planting dates with the ongoing changes in climate at a given place. The proposed approach incorporates four phases. The first phase is concerned with climate data preparation. And the second phase is concerned with Defining suitability membership functions. While in third phase is responsible for automatic fuzzy clustering. Finally, the fourth phase is responsible for fuzzy selection and optimization for the more suitable plantation dates for each crop. This chapter consists of an introduction, related works, the proposed approach, a first case study, a second case study, results discussion, future research directions and finally the chapter conclusion.

Abstract Obstacle avoidance is one of the core problems in the field of mobile robot autonomous navigation. This paper aims to solve the obstacle avoidance problem using Deep Reinforcement Learning. In previous work, various mathematical models have been developed to plan collision-free paths for such robots. In contrast, our method enables the robot to learn by itself from its experiences, and then fit a mathematical model by updating the parameters of a neural network. The derived mathematical model is capable of choosing an action directly according to the input sensor data for the mobile robot. In this paper, we develop an obstacle avoidance framework based on deep reinforcement learning. A 3D simulator is designed as well to provide the training and testing environments. In addition, we developed and compared obstacle avoidance methods based on different Deep Reinforcement Learning strategies, such as Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) and DDQN with Prioritized Experience Replay (DDQN-PER) using our simulator.

Abstract The work reported in this paper explored the use of machine learning tools to analyze quenching pool boiling data in the nucleate boiling range, near maximum heat flux range, and through the transition boiling range towards the Leidenfrost (minimum heat flux) point. It specifically explores the hypothesis that this sequence is a consequence of progressive dryout of the surface as the wall superheat increases. Machine learning tools are used with a heuristic model of the dryout parametric dependence to extract information about the magnitude of surface dryout as the superheat increases. From experimental data, the machine learning analysis provides an indication of how the dryout transition differs for different surface wetting characteristics and substrate materials. The wetting variations considered ranged from moderately wetted plain aluminum and copper surfaces to highly wetted nanostructured superhydrophilic surfaces. The data examined included aluminum and copper substrates. The results of the machine learning analysis indicate that the properties of the surface substrate can have a significant effect on the progressive surface dryout. In contrast, the surface wetting characteristics had a more limited effect for the surfaces tested. The paper concludes with an assessment of the implications of the findings for developing enhanced surfaces for boiling heat transfer performance.

Abstract The State-of-the-Art FinFET technology has been widely adopted in the industry, typically at 14 nm and below technology nodes. As fin dimensions are pushed into the nanometer scale, process complexity is highly escalated, posing great challenges for physical failure analysis. Meanwhile, the accelerated cycles of learning for new technology nodes demand high accuracy and fast turnaround time to solve the material and interface issues pertaining to semiconductor processing or device failure. In this paper, we report a case study of fin related defect that caused device failure. Several analytical techniques, namely, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), plan-view and cross-section Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Z-contrast tomography were employed to characterize the defect and identify root-cause, leading to the resolution of this issue.

Objectives/Scope This paper presents how a brazilian Drilling Contractor and a startup built a partnership to optimize the maintenance window of subsea blowout preventers (BOPs) using condition-based maintenance (CBM). It showcases examples of insights about the operational conditions of its components, which were obtained by applying machine learning techniques in real time and historic, structured or unstructured, data. Methods, Procedures, Process From unstructured and structured historical data, which are generated daily from BOP operations, a knowledge bank was built and used to develop normal functioning models. This has been possible even without real-time data, as it has been tested with large sets of operational data collected from event log text files. Software retrieves the data from Event Loggers and creates structured database, comprising analog variables, warnings, alarms and system information. Using machine learning algorithms, the historical data is then used to develop normal behavior modeling for the target components. Thereby, it is possible to use the event logger or real time data to identify abnormal operation moments and detect failure patterns. Critical situations are immediately transmitted to the RTOC (Real-time Operations Center) and management team, while less critical alerts are recorded in the system for further investigation. Results, Observations, Conclusions During the implementation period, Drilling Contractor was able to identify a BOP failure using the detection algorithms and used 100% of the information generated by the system and reports to efficiently plan for equipment maintenance. The system has also been intensively used for incident investigation, helping to identify root causes through data analytics and retro-feeding the machine learning algorithms for future automated failure predictions. This development is expected to significantly reduce the risk of BOP retrieval during the operation for corrective maintenance, increased staff efficiency in maintenance activities, reducing the risk of downtime and improving the scope of maintenance during operational windows, and finally reduction in the cost of spare parts replacementduring maintenance without impact on operational safety. Novel/Additive Information For the near future, the plan is to integrate the system with the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), checking for historical maintenance, overdue maintenance, certifications, at the same place and time that we are getting real-time operational data and insights. Using real-time data as input, we expect to expand the failure prediction application for other BOP parts (such as regulators, shuttle valves, SPMs (Submounted Plate valves), etc) and increase the applicability for other critical equipment on the rig.

Abstract There are increased development activities in shale reservoirs with ultra-low permeability thanks to the advances in drilling and fracking technology. However, representative reservoir fluid samples are still difficult to acquire. The challenge leads to limited reservoir fluid data and large uncertainties for shale play evaluation, field development, and production optimization. In this work, we built a large unconventional reservoir fluid database with more than 2400 samples from shale reservoirs in Canada, Argentina, and the USA, comprising early production surface gas data and traditional PVT data from selected shale assets. A machine learning approach was applied to the database to predict gas to oil ratio (GOR) in shale reservoirs. To enhance regional correlations and obtain a more accurate GOR prediction, we developed a machine learning model focused on Canada shale plays data, intended for wells with limited reservoir fluid data available and located within the same region. Both surface gas compositional data and well location and are input features to this model. In addition, we developed an additional machine learning model for the objective of a generic GOR prediction model without shale dependency. The database includes Canada shale data and Argentina and USA shale data. The GOR predictions obtained from both models are good. The machine learning model circumscribed to the Canada shale reservoirs has a mean percentage error (MAPE) of 4.31. In contrast, the generic machine learning model, which includes additional data from Argentina and USA shale assets, has a MAPE of 4.86. The better accuracy of the circumscribed Canada model is due to the introduction of the geospatial well location to the model features. This study confirms that early production surface gas data can be used to predict well GOR in shale reservoirs, providing an economical alternative for the sampling challenges during early field development. Furthermore, the GOR prediction offers access to a complete set of reservoir fluid properties which assists the decision-making process for shale play evaluation, completion concept selection, and production optimization.

Nowadays, Information and Communication Technologies play an important role in the teaching-learning process. Universities have incorporated different platforms specifically designed to educational institutions; among others Moodle and Sakai are being used in Spanish Universities. In particular, the Universitat Politècnica de València has adopted the PoliformaT platform, adapted from Sakai. It consists on different tools that facilitate the teaching and learning processes and the teacher–student communication. It enables teachers to improve their instructional design and it is of key importance in blended learning and flipped classroom approach. Lessons is a specific tool available in PoliformaT, which enables the organization of the different educational resources. It combines lecture slides, video lectures (from the teacher or from others sources), exams (quizzes, self-/peer-assessment), tasks and so on. The extensive use of the online platform in the daily learning of the subject, by several teachers and different student groups, needs to pay special attention to the resources organization. In contrary case, the subject platform can become a mess, losing its usefulness. In this paper, the utilization of Lessons by students in two first course subjects at the Universitat Politècnica de València is studied. The teachers of physics of the Aerospace Engineering Degree and electricity of Electronic and Automatic Engineering Degree have designed the course activities by means of the Lessons tool. There are important research questions related to the Lessons tool: how often, when, and how students access to the different contents?, do they think it is useful? At a second level, one can be asked if student perceptions are related to learning outcomes. We will use students' learning tracks, student’s survey and scores to answer these questions.

Five years after the introduction of gas turbine propulsion in major U. S. Navy combatants, the engineering training pipeline, populated with cross-rates primarily from the existing machinist, engineman, and electrical ratings, consisted of a series of contractor developed block courses operationally centered around the propulsion and electrical control consoles. The rapid introduction of new ships in the late seventies and eighties required an accelerated training pipeline and the use of mostly apprentice candidates directly from recruitment. This increased need, the recognition in the fleet that existing training was not providing system knowledge, and the construction of a gas turbine training hot plant precipitated the development of a new training curriculum. Course development was derived from documentation which dictates plant operation: the equipment/system design; the Preventive Maintenance System (PMS); the Engineering Operating Sequencing System (EOSS); Fleet commander engineering management programs; and the Ships’ Manning Document (SMD). Using a disciplined approach, essential student performance objectives were defined and necessary learning objectives developed from the above documentation. The scope of the course encompassed the “cradle to grave” concept from apprentice training through journeyman and supervisor, and necessitated incremental and refresher training throughout the career of the gas turbine mechanic and electrician.

Abstract Specific satellites with ultra-long wings play a crucial role in many fields. However, external disturbance and self-rotation could result in undesired vibrations of flexible wings, which affects the normal operation of the satellites. In severe cases, the satellites will be damaged. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct vibration suppression for these flexible structures. Utilizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL), an active control scheme is presented in this paper to rapidly suppress the vibration of flexible structures with quite small controllable force based on a cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR). To verify the controller’s effectiveness, three groups of simulation with different initial disturbance are implemented. Besides, to enhance the contrast, a passive pre-tightening scheme is also tested. First, the dynamic model of the CDPR that is comprised of four cables and a flexible structure is established using the finite element method. Then, the dynamic behavior of the model under the controllable cable force is analyzed by Newmark-ß method. Furthermore, the agent of DRL is trained by the deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm (DDPG). Finally, the control scheme is conducted on Simulink environment to evaluate its performance, and the results are satisfactory, which validates the controller’s ability to suppress vibrations.

Abstract This paper presents a land rig concept optimized for managed pressure drilling (MPD) service deployment, achieved through close partnership between an MPD technology provider and a drilling contractor. An initial scoping phase identified high-level requirements based on the Operator's planned drilling plans. After the initial concept selection engineering teams continued to optimize MPD rig integration. The engineering teams collaborated closely on optimal placement and configuration for maximum operational efficiency. The system was designed to facilitate fast rig moves and walking within each pad with minimum disruption to other processes. Safety and handling issues were identified in the detailed design stage and allowed optimizing field deployment and operability. The equipment was paired with an MPD control system that was fully integrated in the rigs’ drilling automation platform, enabling consistent, reliable, and repeatable performance. This paper will outline the concept selection process, the design and deployment phase, and further optimization that was implemented after initial learnings.

This paper presents the business case for small fusion reactors. The conventional view in fusion research is that “economy of scale” means that small reactors are not economically viable compared to their larger counterparts. However, empirical evidence shows how the importance of the “economy of scale” is overrated. Firstly several studies show that large investment projects are usually delivered over budget and late. Large projects (or megaprojects) are more likely to go over budget and larger the project greater the overall risk. On the contrary, small plants are more manageable investments. Firstly, for the same power installed, there is more chance to exploit the advantages from learning and co-siting economies. Since the overall investment is a fraction of a large plant, the overall “bankability” is better and the financing easier. Secondly, small plants are more easily usable for cogeneration and load following. This is becoming a fundamental design criteria for power plants to be delivered after 2030. Lastly, the division of a large investment into smaller investments provides investors with “degrees of freedom” to hedge some of the risks and exploit valuable opportunities. The “Real Options approach” is a mathematical framework able to price these options. In summary, small fusion reactors can represent a more credible and faster route to deployment than large fusion reactors.
