Résumé :

In this thesis work, the search for a Higgs boson at CMS in the WW fully leptonic decay channel is presented. Two different production mechanisms have been analysed: the Vector Boson Fusion (VBF) and the Higgs-strahlung (VH). Given the leptonic decays of WW, in order to guarantee a good electron reconstruction and identification, the electromagnetic calorimeter alignment has been studied. In addition, both the VBF and the VH analyses relies on the capability of CMS to reconstruct jets: one of the first measurements of CMS, with data collected during 2010 run, looking at the simultaneous production of one central jet and one forward jet, is described. Higgs search analysis optimization, data driven estimation of the main backgrounds and the results obtained with 7 and 8 TeV collisions are reported. The analysis excludes a Higgs boson with 95% confidence level with a mass between 135 and 200 GeV.

Cette thèse présente le travail de trois ans effectué dans l'expérience CMS, dans le contexte des premières collisions proton-proton du LHC. L'étude porte en particulier sur la recherche du boson de Higgs. Cette particule, dont l'existence est prévue par le Modèle Standard, n'a encore jamais été observée, mais elle est toujours activement l'objet de recherches auprès de collisionneurs à très hautes énergies. Dans le passé récent, les expériences au LEP et Tevatron ont permis d'exclure l'existence du Higgs dans les domaines de masse < 114 GeV/c2 et [147, 179] GeV/c2, avec un intervalle de confiance de 95%. Au moment où le sujet de cette thèse a été décidé, les domaines de masse très faible et très élevé étaient donc les régions les plus intéressantes. Avec les données de collisions de 2011, je me suis occupé de la question de la stabilité et uniformité de la réponse du calorimètre électromagnétique (ECAL). Des électrons isolés, provenant de la désintégration de boson W en en voie électron-neutrino ont été utilisé pour caractériser la réponse du ECAL (corrections locales d'uniformité, corrections de transparence des cristaux, vieillissement des cellules de lecture). Ceci sert de référence pour l'analyse du Boson du Higgs se désintégrant en deux photons, qui est le canal favori pour des hypothèses de masse faible et qui exige une une résolution en énergie optimale pour mieux profiter de la résonance trés étroite du boson du Higgs pour ces masses. L'analyse de physique effectuée dans cette thèse porte sur la recherche de bosons de Higgs dans l'autre région de masse encore permise par les contraintes expérimentales. En particulier, j'ai étudié le canal de désintégration H > WW > lνqq pour des masses du Higgs mH > 2mW. Ce canal est celui qui offre la plus grande section efficace de production (σ × B) pour le boson de Higgs, même s'il est pénalisé par des bruits de fonds de processus standards importants. Une stratégie d'analyse complète a été définie: j'ai étudié les performances pour la physique de la reconstruction et de l'identification des leptons isolés, fortement contribué à la définition et à la caractérisation du déclenchement (trigger) pour ce canal, et procédé à une analyse détaillée des sources d'incertitudes systématiques affectants l'interprétation statistique des résultats. En absence d'une déviation par rapport à l'attendue des bruits de fonds du modèle standard, des limites supérieures sur la masse du boson de Higgs ont été obtenu, entre 320 et 400 GeV/c2 environ This thesis presents a three-year work in the CMS experiment, in the context of the first LHC proton-proton collisions. This channel has the largest effective cross section (σ × B) for the Higgs boson, although the final state is contaminated by large background events from Standard Model sources. A complete analysis strategy has been defined, optimizing the selections that allow to enhance the signal presence in the final set of events. I have studied the performances of lepton reconstruction and identification and contributed to the development and characterization of a trigger, specifically designed for this channel. Finally, all sources of systematic uncertainties that affect the statistical interpretation of the result have been addressed. With no significant excess observed on the expected background yield, an upper limit on the Higgs boson production cross-section has been settled, for Higgs masses between about 320 and 400 GeV/c2

Résumé :

The Standard Model is a mathematical description of the very nature of elementary particles and their interactions, now seen as relativistic quantum fields. A key feature of the theory is the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, responsible for the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the underlying gauge symmetry, and which implies the existence of a neutral Higgs particle. Searches for the Higgs boson were conducted at the Large Electron Positron collider until 2000 and are still ongoing at the Tevatron collider, but the particle has not been not observed. In order to better constrain models with an exotic electroweak symmetry breaking sector, a search for a Higgs boson decaying into a W pair is carried out with the ALEPH detector on 453 pb-1 of data collected at center-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. The analysis is optimized for the many topologies resulting from the six-fermion final state. A lower limit at 105.8 GeV/c² on the Higgs boson mass in a fermiophobic Higgs boson scenario is obtained. The ultimate machine for the Higgs boson discovery is the Large Hadron Collider, which is being built at CERN. In order to evaluate the physics potential of the CMS detector, the WH associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into a W pair is studied. Performances of data acquisition and its sophisticated trigger system, particle identification and event reconstruction are investigated by performing a detailed analysis on simulated data. Three-lepton final states are shown to provide interesting possibilities. For an integrated luminosity of 100 fb-1, a potential signal significance of more than 5ó is obtained in the mass interval between 155 and 178 GeV/c². The corresponding precision on the Higgs boson mass and partial decay width into W pairs are evaluated. This channel also provides one of the very few possible avenues towards the discovery of a fermiophobic Higgs boson below 180 GeV/c². These studies required many original technical developments, that are also presented.

Résumé :

The usage of isolated electrons from W and Z leptonic decays for the intercalibration of the CMS ECAL single channel response is described. The statistics of 5 fb−1, collected at LHC in 2011 at sqrt(s)=7 TeV, allowed to reach a statistical precision of about 1% in the central part of the ECAL barrel and about 4% in the ECAL endcaps. The results obtained with this method are combined with others, and the impact on the Higgs to di-photon search is shown. Subsequently, the thesis describes the search strategy for the Higgs boson in the H > WW > lvqq final state. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 17 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions accumulated during the 2011-2012 LHC run. The standard model Higgs boson is excluded at 95% confidence level in the mass ranges [215 − 490] + [525 − 600] GeV.

Cette thèse présente une étude de la production associée du boson de Higgs en association avec des quarks tops, suivie d’une désintégration du boson de Higgs en leptons tau, dans des collisions proton-proton (pp) à une énergie dans le centre de masse de sqrt(s) = 13 TeV enregistrées avec le détecteur CMS au Grand collisionneur de hadrons (LHC) du CERN.Ce travail s’inscrit dans le contexte du Run 2 du LHC, marqué par une augmentation de l’énergie dans le centre de masse de 8 à 13 TeV accompagnée d’une augmentation de la luminosité instantanée des collisions par rapport au Run 1. Pour faire face à ces nouvelles conditions de prise de données, CMS a entrepris une amélioration complète du système de déclenchement de niveau 1 accomplie avant 2016. Ce nouveau système et en particulier le nouvel algorithme électron et photon de niveau 1 ont contribué avec succès à un grand nombre de résultats CMS basés sur les données du Run 2. La mise en service de ce nouveau système ainsi que ces performances mesurées dans les premières données collectées par ce nouveau système de déclenchement sont présentées en détails.Une technique d’analyse novatrice basée sur la Méthode des Éléments de Matrice optimisée pour la recherche du processus ttH, H->tautau est également présentée, ainsi que plusieurs outils génériques pouvant âtre utilisés dans une large variété d’analyses H->tautau. Les résultats de l’analyse CMS utilisant cette méthode basés sur 35.9 fb-1 collectés en 2016 sont présentés. L’hypothèse "bruit de fond seul" est défavorisée mais n’est pas encore exclue par cette analyse à elle seule This thesis reports a study of the Higgs boson production in association with top quarks and decaying into τ leptons in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).This work has been carried out in the context of the Run 2 of the LHC, marked by an increase in the center-of-mass energy from 8 to 13 TeV together with an increase in the instantaneous luminosity of the collisions with respect to Run 1. To cope with this new data-taking conditions, CMS had initiated a full upgrade of the Level-1 trigger system achieved by 2016. This new system and in particular the new Level-1 electron and photon algorithm have successfully contributed to a large number of CMS results using Run 2 data. The commissioning of this new system and its performance measured with the first data collected with this new trigger are presented in details.A novel analysis technique based on the Matrix Element Method optimized for the search of the ttH, H->tautau process is also presented, including several generic tools which can be used in a large variety of H->tautau analyses. Results of the CMS analysis using this method based on 35.9 fb-1 collected in 2016 are presented. The background-only hypothesis is disfavored but not yet excluded by this analysis alone

Cette thèse présente le travail de trois ans effectué dans l'expérience CMS, dans le contexte des premières collisions du LHC. L'étude porte en particulier sur les électrons, objets essentiels pour les analyses de recherche en canaux multi-leptons, notamment l'analyse H → ZZ(∗) → 4ℓ. Durant les premiers mois de collisions, nous avons pris part à la validation des données enregistrées par le calorimètre électromagnétique. Nous avons mesuré l'efficacité du système de déclenchement de niveau 1 en électrons et photons tout au long de l'année 2010. L'efficacité sur le plateau est de 99. 6 % (resp. 98. 5 %) pour des électrons dans le tonneau (resp. Dans les bouchons) du calorimètre. En vue d'optimiser le potentiel de découverte, nous avons mis au point un nouvel algorithme de mesure de la charge des électrons. Dans CMS, celle-ci est affectée par la grande quantité de matière présente dans le trajectographe. Les performances de cet algorithme ont été mesurées sur les données enregistrées en 2010, sur des électrons issus de désintégrations de bosons Z, passant une sélection standard. La probabilité d'erreur est de 1. 06 % (0. 19 % après une sélection spécifique), en accord avec la simulation. L'analyse de physique effectuée dans cette thèse porte sur la recherche de bosons de Higgs doublement chargés, dans leurs désintégrations en paires de leptons. Avec les données enregistrées en 2010, un événement de bruit de fond est attendu à la fin de la sélection, pour un nombre d'événements de signal qui dépend de l'hypothèse de masse et du modèle considéré. Un événement est observé dans les données, en accord avec le bruit de fond attendu, ce qui permet d'exclure ce signal sur des domaines de masse plus larges que précédemment : la limite varie de 122 GeV à 176 GeV en fonction du modèle This thesis presents three years of work with the CMS experiment, in the context of the ﬁrst LHC collisions. Electron objects were studied in particular, as major tools for multi-lepton analyses, in particular the H → ZZ(∗) → 4ℓ analysis. During the ﬁrst months of collisions, we took part in the validation of data registered by the electromagnetic calorimeter. We also measured the efficiency of the level-1 electron and photon trigger during the whole 2010 year. The plateau eﬃciency is of 99. 6 % (resp. 98. 5 %) on electrons in the barrel part (resp. In the endcap part) of the calorimeter. In order to optimize the discovery potential, we built a new electron charge measurement algorithm. In CMS, this measurement is affected by the large amount of material present in the inner tracker. The performance of this algorithm was measured on 2010 data, for electrons from Z boson decay passing a standard selection. The probability of charge mis-identiﬁcation is of 1. 06 % (0. 19 % with a speciﬁc selection), in agreement with the simulation. The physics analysis that was built during this PhD searches doubly charged Higgs bosons decaying into lepton pairs. For the amount of data registered in 2010, one background event is expected to pass the selection, while the amount of signal events depends on the mass hypothesis and on the model. One event was found on data, in agreement with the background expectation, hence the signal was excluded on larger mass ranges than previous experiments: a mass limit was set between 122 GeV and 176 GeV, depending on the model

Résumé :

Le LHC a commencé, dès le mois de Novembre 2009, à prendre des données. Cela initie une nouvelle ère de découverte pour la physique des particules. Le détecteur CMS est une des expériences principales de physique présente au LHC. Un des buts de cette expérience est la recherche du boson de Higgs, pouvant être à l'origine de la brisure de symétrie électrofaible. Après un replacement de la place du LHC et de CMS au sein de la physique des particules d'aujourd'hui, je présenterai alors l'ensemble de la chaîne permettant de passer de l'évènement physique aux analyses finales permettant d'extraire, des particules reconstruites, les informations permettant, à terme, la découverte de nouvelles particules telles que le boson de Higgs. Une première partie de mes travaux a porté sur la mesure et le suivi des rapports de gains de l'électronique d'acquisition, permettant de mesurer de manière précise l'énergie des photons sur toute la gamme d'énergie accessible (35 MeV  1.7 TeV). Mes travaux ont alors concernés la vérification de la validité des méthodes de calibration des cartes d'acquisition VFE au sein du détecteur. Une seconde partie de mes travaux à porté sur la manière dont doivent êtres générés les évènements de physique pour ne pas avoir de double-comptage entre les photons provenant de générateurs à éléments de matrices et ceux provenant de générateur à gerbe partonique. En collaboration avec des physiciens phénoménologues une méthode de véto anti double-comptage a été élaborée. Enfin, la dernière partie de mes résultats concerne la manière dont les désintégrations radiatives du boson de jauge électrofaible neutre Z° permettent, par la sélection d'une population de photons certifiés et isotopiques, d'extraire l'échelle d'énergie des photons au sein du calorimètre électromagnétique de CMS The LHC has started, since november 2009 taking data. This started a new era of discovery in particle physics. The CMS detector is one of the main experiment at the LHC (CERN). One goal of this experiment is the Higgs's boson discovery, that can be related to the electroweak symmetry breaking. After a contextual replacement of the LHC and CMS within the nowdays's particle physics, I will explain the whole chain allowing to go from the physical event to the nal analysis, in order to extract the reconstructed particles and the informations allowing, at the end, the discovery of new particles like the Higgs's boson. A rst part of my works was about the measurement and the study of the acquisition electronics's gains-ratios. This work aimed to have a precise measurement of the photons energy on the whole available energy band (35 MeV -> 1.7 TeV). In particular, my works were upon the validation of the dierent calibration methods for the VFE acquisition cards within the detector. A second part of my work was about the way that one have to generate the physics events avoiding double-counting between photons coming from matrix-element generators and those coming from parton-shower algorithms. In collaboration with phenomenologists physicists, an anti-double-counting veto have been created. At last, the nal part of my results was about the way the radiative decay of the Z° neutral electroweak gauge boson allow, by the selection of certied photons, the extraction of the photons energy scale inside the electromagnetical calorimeter of CMS

Questa tesi di dottorato presenta lo studio della produzione associata di un bosone di Higgs con un bosone vettore (VH) in collisioni protone-protone, utilizzando i dati raccolti ad un'energia nel centro di massa delle collisioni pari a 13 TeV con l'esperimento CMS nel 2016. Questo studio è ristretto allo stato finale dove il boson di Higgs decade in due fotoni. Dopo un'introduzione riguardante il contesto teorico e sperimentale che motiva questo studio (Capitolo 1) e una descrizione generale dell'esperimento CMS (Capitolo 2), il lavoro sperimental necessario per ottenere exxellenti performance dal calorimetro eletromagnetico di CMS sono descritti in dettaglio (Capitolo 4). This Ph.D. thesis presents a study of the associated production of the Higgs boson with a vector boson (VH) in proton-proton collisions, using data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS experiment in 2016 for an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 . The study is restricted to final states were the Higgs boson decays in two photons (H→ γγ). After an introduction on the experimental and theoretical landscape that motivates this study (Chapter 1) and an overview of the CMS experiment (Chapter 2), the exper- imental work performed to ensure the best quality of the CMS ECAL reconstruction is described in detail (Chapter 3). The analysis method and the results are then described (Chapter 4), including the discussion of optimization steps that were identified and will be relevant for future developments. In particular, the channels with the vector boson decaying into a pair of quarks and the W boson decaying into a lepton and a neutrino are described This analysis, included in a paper recently submitted for publication, represents the first result on the measurement of the VH production process in the H→ γγ final state with the LHC Run 2 data.

This thesis describes a study of the muon selection for the search of the Standard Model Higgs boson decay to two muons with the CMS detector at LHC. Data collected during the 2017 run have been analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 1/fb. Three strategies, built upon different selection criteria and muon momentum requirements, are tested. The agreement between data and Monte Carlo distributions for the most relevant kinematic variables is found to be good. The efficiency of muon identification and isolation has been measured with real data, and corrections to the Monte Carlo estimates (so-called “scale factors”) have been determined as a function of muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The statistical significance obtained by the three selections has been estimated using simulated signal and background samples, in order to establish the best compromise between efficiency and purity. The so-called \textit{medium} muon selection with loose isolation cuts and a transverse momentum cut at 10 GeV is found to achieve the best significance.

Une recherche de résonance neutre et lourde X est effectuée dans le canal X→WW→eνμν en utilisant les données en collision pp correspondant à une luminosité intégrée d'environ 36,1 fb⁻¹, prises à une énergie dans le centre-de-masse de 13 TeV par le détecteur ATLAS au LHC. La résonance peut être soit un boson de Higgs scalaire lourd soit d'autres résonances lourdes aux spins différents. Deux scénarios de largeur sont étudiés pour un boson de Higgs lourd dans les modes de fusion gluon-gluon et de fusion vecteur-boson; une largeur soit étroite soit grande. Plusieurs hypothèses sont utilisées pour rechercher d'autres résonances, comme le modèle avec deux doublets de Higgs, le modèle de Georgi-Machacek, le modèle avec un triplet vectoriel en mode d'annihilation quark-antiquark, le modèle de Randall-Sundrum avec un graviton de spin 2 correspondant à un paramètre d'échelle de courbure de 1 ou 0,5 et un signal de spin 2 dans le mode de fusion vecteur-boson. Trois catégories d'événements indépendantes sont définies dans l'analyse : une catégorie inclusive où les espaces de phase en fusion vecteur boson sont exclus et deux autres catégories qui sont optimisées pour les signaux produits en mode de fusion vecteur-boson avec un jet ou au moins deux jets. Aucun excès significatif d'événements au-delà de la prédiction du bruit de fond du Modèle Standard ne se trouve dans la gamme de masse comprise entre 200 GeV et 5 TeV. Les limites supérieures sont obtenues sur le produit de la section efficace de la production de la résonance et du rapport de branchement X→WW. Pour les signaux de bosons de Higgs lourds, les valeurs supérieures à 6,4 pb et 1,3 pb à mH = 200 GeV et supérieures à 0,008 pb et 0,005 pb à 4 TeV sont exclues à un niveau de confiance de 95% pour la fusion gluon-gluon et la fusion vecteur-boson, respectivement. Pour les signaux prédits par le modèle avec un triplet vectoriel, les valeurs de masse inférieures à 1,3 TeV sont exclues. De la même manière, pour les signaux prédits par le modèle de Randall Sundrum, les valeurs de masse inférieures à 1,1 TeV et 850 GeV sont exclues pour le paramètre d'échelle de courbure de 1 et 0.5, respectivement A search for a heavy neutral resonance X is performed in the X→WW→eνμν decay channel using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb⁻¹, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The resonance can be either a heavy scalar Higgs boson or other heavy resonances with different spins. Two scenarios are considered for the heavy Higgs boson hypotheses with different decay widths in both the gluon-gluon fusion and the vector boson fusion production modes, namely a narrow-width approximation and a large width assumption. Several hypotheses are used for the interpretation to search for other resonances, like two Higgs doublet models, Georgi-Machacek model, heavy vector triplet model in the quark-antiquark annihilation mode, a bulk Randall-Sundrum graviton model with a spin-2 Graviton with a curvature scale parameter of either 1 or 0.5 and a spin-2 signal in the vector-boson fusion mode. Three orthogonal event categories are defined in the analysis: two vector-boson fusion categories which are optimised for the signals produced in the vector-boson fusion mode with one jet or at least two jets and one quasi-inclusive gluon-gluon fusion category where the vector boson fusion phase spaces defined by the two vector-boson fusion categories are excluded. No significant excess of events beyond the Standard Model background prediction is found in the mass range between 200 GeV and up to 5 TeV. Upper limits are set on the product of the production cross section of the resonance and the X→WW branching fraction. For heavy Higgs boson signals, values above 6.4 pb and 1.3 pb at 200 GeV and above 0.008 pb and 0.005 pb at 4 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for the gluon-gluon fusion and the vector-boson fusion production modes, respectively. For signals predicted by the heavy vector triplet model, mass values below 1.3 TeV are excluded. Similarly, for signals predicted by the bulk Randall-Sundrum graviton model, mass values below 1.1 TeV and 850 GeV are excluded for the curvature scale parameter of 1 and 0.5, respectively

Malgrès le fait que toutes les observations expérimentales faites dans des collisionneurs de particules sont théoriquement expliquées par le modèle standard, celui-ci n'explique pas des phénomènes naturels tels que la gravité, la matière noire, l’énergie noire, l’asymétrie matière-antimatière, etc. La super-symmetrie est une extension du modèle standard qui peut proposer des solutions à certaines de ces lacunes. La version minimale de cette extension, appelée MSSM, est un modèle a deux doublets de Higgs, ce qui propose l'existence de cinq bosons de Higgs observables. Trois de ces bosons de Higgs sont neutre, et le boson de Higgs découvert en 2012 pourrait être un d'entre eux. Cette thèse présente l'analyse des données de collision proton-proton enregistrées par le détecteur CMS en 2017 pendant la deuxième période de prise de données du LHC au CERN, ce qui correspond a une luminosité intégrée de 41.5fb⁻¹. Cette analyse a pour but la recherche d'un boson de Higgs lourd et neutre du MSSM, qui se désintégrerai en une pair de leptons tau qui par la suite se désintégrerai eux-mêmes hadroniquement (τh). Une des difficultés de l’étude de cet état final est liée au grand nombre de jets produit par QCD dans les collisions pp, car les jets peuvent facilement être mal identifies comme des τh. Pour mitiger cet effet, une nouvelle technique d'identification de τh basée sur un réseau de neurone profond récursif est présentée. Cette technique est ensuite comparée à la méthode d'identification standard utilisée à CMS. Un boson de Higgs supplémentaire se manifesterai en tant qu’excès d'événements dans les distribution de la variable m_{T}^{tot} dans le canal τhτh. Des limites supérieurs dans l'intervalle de confiance a 95% pour le scenario m_h^{max} sont déterminées dans l'espace des paramètres m_{a}-{tan}β. De plus, des limites sur le produit du rapport d'embranchement et de la section efficace de production sont déterminés pour la production par fusion de gluons et pour la production en association avec un quark b, pour des hypothèses de masses dans l'intervalle de 110 a 2900GeV Although all collider experimental observations are theoretically explained by the standard model (SM) of particle physics, the SM does not explain many natural phenomenon, such as gravity, dark matter, dark energy, matter-antimatter asymmetry, etc. SuperSymmetry (SUSY) is an extension of the SM that can address some of the issues in SM. The minimal version of this extension, the MSSM, is a two Higgs doublet model, which leads to the existence of five observable Higgs bosons. Three of those Higgs boson are neutral, and the Higgs boson found in 2012 could be one of them. This thesis presents an analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector in 2017 during the second run of the LHC at CERN, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5fb⁻¹. The analysis is aimed at the search for a MSSM heavy neutral Higgs boson decaying to a pair of taus that subsequently decay hadronically (τh). One of the challenges of the studied final state is the copious amount of jets produced in pp collisions via QCD, since a jet can easily be misidentified as a τh. In order to mitigate this misidentification, a new τh identification technique based on a recursive deep neural network is presented. It is compared with the standard identification technique used in CMS. The extra Higgs boson would manifest itself as an excess of events in the distribution of the m_{T}^{tot} variable for the selected τhτh events. Upper limits at the 95% CL are determined in the m_{a}-{tan}β parameter space for the m_h^{max} scenario. Additionally, model-independent limits on the cross section times branching fractions for a single Higgs boson produced via either gluon-gluon fusion or in association with b-quarks are determined for mass hypotheses in the range 90 to 3200GeV

Dans cette thèse, je présente mon travail effectué au sein de l'expérience CMS, et consacré à la recherche du boson de Higgs du modèle standard dans sa voie de désintégration en une paire de leptons tau. L'objectif original et la finalité de cette recherche est une contribution à la découverte du boson de Higgs au LHC. Après un résumé du cadre théorique et expérimental de ma thése, j'expose la technique particle-fow développée pour la reconstruction des événements hors ligne enregistrés par CMS. La reconstruction et l'identification des leptons tau dans CMS sont décrites en détail dans la thèse. Une attention particulière est consacrée à la discrimination entre les électrons et les leptons taus qui se désintégrant en voie semi-leptoniques (donnant des neutrinos et des hadrons). Un élément crucial dans l'étude H -> tautau est la reconstruction de la masse invariante. Sur ce sujet, j'ai apporté des contributions originales au développement d'un Dynamical Likelihood Model, appelé SVfit, pour estimer la masse totale de la paire des taus, et qui sera utilisé pour l'analyse. Enfin, une recherche du boson de Higgs SM dans la voie H -> tautau , base sur 4.9 1/fb de collisions pp à sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, est présentée. Des événements avec une paire de taus sont sélectionnés où l'un se désintégre de façon semi-leptonique (i.e. en hadrons et neutrinos) et l'autre en façon leptonique (i.e. en muons ou électrons et en neutrinos). Aucun excès par dessus aux bruits de fond prédicts par le SM n'a été observé. L'interprétation statistique des résultats à été faite dans le cadre du SM et elle est finalement traduite en limites au 95% CL sur la section efficace du signal.

Le travail de cette thèse a été mené au sein de la collaboration CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), une des quatre experiences en cours d'installation au LHC (Large Hadron Collider) du CERN. La thèse se focalise sur le calorimètre électromagnétique de CMS: les performances du detecteur sont étudiées en détail en utilisant soit des données de tests réalisés sur faisceau d'électrons soit une simulation complète du détecteur. Une étude du bruit de fond électronique dans la chaîne de lecture a conduit à l'élaboration de deux méthodes de reconstruction de l'amplitude des signaux, l'une en cas de saturation de la chaîne et l'autre en cas de bruit de fond cohérent. La thèse presente aussi une étude des méthodes de reconstruction des électrons dans CMS, qui a conduit à la première définition dans CMS de la qualité de mesure d'un électron, à une procédure pour établir l'échelle d'énergie des électrons et à la combinaison des informations du calorimètre et du trajectomètre pour obtenir une estimation optimale de l'impulsion de l'électron au vertex. Ces resultats sont appliqués à l'analyse du potentiel de découverte de l'Higgs dans le canal de désintegration H->ZZ(*)->4e pour lequel une te! chnique standard de selections séquentielles ainsi qu'une technique optimale utilisant des reseaux de neurones sont proposées.

The Thesis investigates the possible case that the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is not due to a light, weakly interacting Higgs boson, but instead the Symmetry is broken by strongly interacting heavy resonances. In that case, the formalism of the Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian can be used as a model-independent way to construct a low-energy effective theory for the electroweak interactions and using the Pade unitarisation protocol, certain resonances can be predicted. The scattering of longitudinally polarized W bosons, one of which decays leptonically and the other hadronically, is used as a channel to probe the mechanism of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the mass range of 600 GeV up to 2.4 TeV and for different resonance scenarios, including the case that there is no resonance in the spectrum. The reconstruction of the vector bosons is described and it is demonstrated that, by exploiting key features of the hadronic environment, the contribution from the background processes can be reduced in such a way that the ATLAS detector will be able to see interesting WW scattering events within the above mass range with 30 fb x of data and it will be also possible to distinguish among the different resonance scenarios. A key study of the present research is the measurement of the WW scattering cross-section and it has been calculated that a significant measurement will be achieved, for the most pessimistic scenario, with 80 fb l of data. Regarding the performance of the ATLAS detector, the Thesis focuses on the Level-2 Trigger for selecting interesting physics events. After a short introduction to the Trigger system of the detector, the concept of the Region of Interest is explained and a method for reducing its geometrical size is presented. The method is based on the information from the Electromagnetic Calorimeter and it will be demonstrated that the reduced size can improve the performance of the Level-2 Trigger in terms of execution time (58% faster) but also for track reconstruction (6% more efficient) in the Inner Detector, especially during the high luminosity phase of the LHC.

This thesis is concerns an analysis to probe the Higgs boson in the H→WW(*)→lvlv decay mode, one of three analyses contributing to the discovery of the Higgs boson at a mass of mH = 125 GeV in July 2012. The dataset used are the proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider during 2012 at a centre of mass energy of 8 TeV, and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 13.0 fb-1. An excess of events is observed in the data over the expected number of background events. The significance of the excess is estimated to be 2.8 standard deviations and the signal strength, defined as a ratio of the observed cross-section for the signal to the cross section predicted for a Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV, is measured to be υ = 1:5 ± 0:6. At present, all results in the H→WW(*)→lvlv decay mode concerning the newly discovered particle are compatible with the expectations from the Standard Model for a Higgs boson with a mass of mH = 125 GeV. In addition, an optimisation of the thresholds used to check the stability of the electronics calibration constants in the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter is presented. The calibration constants enters the calculation of the energy of the individual cells in the calorimeter and have to be validated regularly. The study is performed on calibration data from 2010 and 2011. New thresholds, based on the statistical behavior of the calibration constants, are determined separately for the different calorimeter regions. QC 20130404

Durante il mio percorso di dottorato mi sono occupato principalmente dello sviluppo di nuovi sensori a pixel in Silicio per l’upgrade dell’esperimento CMS in vista della fase ad alta luminosità del collisionatore LHC (HL – LHC o LHC fase 2) al CERN, un’attività che avevo già intrapreso per il mio lavoro di tesi magistrale. Questi sensori devono tollerare fluenze di radiazione di alcuni 10^16 neq/cm^2 ad una distanza di circa 3 cm dal punto di interazione. Il programma di R&D portato avanti da un gruppo INFN ATLAS-CMS, in collaborazione con Fondazione Bruno Kessler, riguarda lo sviluppo di sensori planari sottili e 3D su substrati prodotti con la tecnica del Direct Wafer Bonding. L'impiego di questa tecnica permette di attuare tutti i processi di fabbricazione su una sola superficie del wafer, riducendo notevolmente i costi del processo. Lo spessore attivo dei prototipi è di 100 o 130 um per i sensori planari e 130 um per quelli 3D. I primi sensori prodotti hanno pixel delle stesse dimensioni di quelli attualmente in uso in CMS, 100 x 150 um^2. Le dimensioni sono state poi ridotte a 25 x 100 um^2 e 50 x 50 um^2 in modo da aumentare il numero di canali di lettura in vista della maggiore molteplicità di tracce attesa ad HL-LHC. Sono state effettuate numerose campagne di prova su fascio per caratterizzare i sensori planari e quelli 3D, prima e dopo l’irraggiamento a fluenze fino a 1 x 10^16 neq/cm^2. I miei contributi alla caratterizzazione dei prototipi sono riportati in questa tesi e includono anche lo sviluppo di algoritmi dedicati. Dopo circa due anni di lavoro sulla caratterizzazione dei nuovi prototipi ho sviluppato un interesse anche per l’impatto del rivelatore a pixel sul programma di fisica dell’esperimento. All’inizio del mio secondo anno di dottorato mi sono messo in cerca di un’analisi in cui le informazioni del rivelatore a pixel fossero largamente sfruttate. Ho scelto di lavorare alla ricerca della produzione di coppie di bosoni di Higgs nello stato finale con 2 b-jets e 2 leptoni tau. Ho scelto questa analisi sia perchè la ricostruzione delle particelle nello stato finale fa ampio uso delle informazioni di tracce e vertici sia perchè l’analisi trarrà grande benificio dell'incremento della statistica previsto ad HL-LHC, che potrebbe portare ad avere la prima evidenza sperimentale di produzione HH. La ricerca di coppie di bosoni di Higgs ha un ruolo fondamentale nella caratterizzazione di questa particella in quanto rappresenta il canale migliore per la misura della costante di accoppiamento trilineare. Ogni deviazione dalle previsioni teoriche del Modello Standard porterebbe a cambiamenti importanti nella cinematica e nel rateo di produzione di coppie di bosoni di Higgs, il che rende queste ricerche sensibili a effetti di nuova fisica. Lo stato finale bbtau^+tau^- rappresenta uno dei canali più interessanti in questo studio visti il branching ratio elevato e la piccola contaminazione di eventi di fondo. In questa tesi viene descritta la strategia sviluppata per l'analisi dei dati raccolti dall’esperimento CMS durante il Run 2 di LHC (2016 + 2017 + 2018), corrispondenti ad una luminosità integrata di 137 fb^-1. Viene inoltre riportata la sensitività attesa dell'analisi, che include lo studio di due meccanismi di produzione di coppie di bosoni di Higgs: Gluon-Gluon Fusion (GGF) e Vector Boson Fusion (VBF). My research activity during the PhD has focused mainly on the development of new silicon pixel sensors for the upgrade of the CMS experiment inner tracker in view of the CERN LHC High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC), an activity I started to work on during my master thesis. These sensors must be capable of surviving irradiation fluences up to a few 10^16 neq/cm^2 at ~ 3 cm from the interaction point. The R&D program carried out by an INFN ATLAS-CMS group, in collaboration with Fondazione Bruno Kessler, covers both planar and 3D pixel devices made on substrates obtained by the Direct Wafer Bonding technique. Using this technology, every fabrication process takes place on one side only of the wafer, with consequent cost savings. The active thickness of the planar sensors studied in this thesis is 100 um or 130 um, that of 3D sensors 130 um. Sensors belonging to the first batches have pixel cells with dimensions of 100 x 150 um^2, same as the sensors currently installed in CMS. These dimensions have been reduced to 25 x 100 um^2 and 50 x 50 um^2 in order to cope with the higher track multiplicity expected at HL-LHC. Prototypes of hybrid modules, bump-bonded to different readout chips, have been characterized in beam tests. Results on their performance before and after irradiation up to maximum fluence of ∼ 1 x 10^16 neq/cm^2 are reported in this thesis. After a couple of years working on the characterization of the new prototypes I became interested also on the impact of the pixel detector on the physics program of the experiment. At the beginning of my second year of PhD I started to look for a physics analysis where the information of the pixel detector is largely exploited. I chose to work on the search for double Higgs boson production in final states with 2 b-jets and 2 tau leptons since the reconstruction of the b-jets and tau leptons makes large use of vertexes and tracks information. Another reason why I chose this analysis is that it will benefit from the incremented statistics foreseen at HL-LHC, possibly leading to the first experimental evidence of HH production. Double Higgs searches play a fundamental role in the characterization of the Higgs boson as they represent the favorite channel to measure the Higgs boson trilinear self coupling. Any deviation from the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model would lead to sizable changes in both the kinematics and production rate of HH events, thus making double Higgs searches sensitive to new physics effects. The bbtau^+tau^-final state represents one of the most interesting channels to explore double Higgs production, because of the high branching ratio and the relatively small background contamination. The strategy developed to analyze data collected by the CMS experiment during the LHC Run 2 (2016 + 2017 + 2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb^-1, is described in this thesis. The expected sensitivity of the analysis, targeting both the Gluon Fusion (GGF) and Vector Boson Fusion (VBF) production channels, is also reported.

Les mesures des propriétés du boson de Higgs dans le canal en 4 leptons sont rapportées dans cette thèse. Les données prises avec le détecteur CMS dans des collisions proton-proton à 13 TeV dans le centre de masse sont utilisées. Des améliorations importantes, touchant plusieurs aspects de l'analyse, ont été apportées. Mes contributions principales portent sur deux grands axes: amélioration de la mesure d'efficacité de sélection des électrons et analyse des données 2017 en tant qu'analyseur et éditeur principal.Les résultats sont montrées pour les données du Run II, collectées en 2016 et 2017, correspondant à des luminosités intégrées de 35.9 fb-1 et 41.5 fb-1, respectivement.Les modifications de l'intensité de signal, relative aux prédictions du Modèle Standard (MS), la masse et la largeur du boson de Higgs ainsi que les sections efficaces de production inclusives et différentielles sont mesurées. Tous les résultats sont en bon accord avec les prédictions du MS pour un boson de Higgs avec une masse de 125 GeV.Finalement, une mesure des modificateurs de l'intensité du signal est effectuée en combinant les données 2016 et 2017, pour un total de 77 fb-1. Une nouvelle fois, ces mesures sont en accord avec le MS. De nouvelles frontières sont désormais atteintes, les incertitudes statistiques et systématiques sont désormais d'égale contribution à l'incertitude totale sur les mesures inclusives de section efficace de production This thesis reports on measurements of Higgs boson properties in the four-lepton channel in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector. Significant improvements in many aspects of the analysis are introduced. My contribution is twofold, improving the electron selection efficiency measurements and leading the analysis of data recorded in 2017 as the main author. Results of the analysis of Run II data are presented for two data sets recorded in 2016 and 2017, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 35.9 fb−1 and 41.5 fb−1, respectively. The signal strength modifiers relative to the standard model prediction, the mass and decay width of the boson, differential and inclusive cross sections are measured. All results are in good agreement with standard model expectations for a 125 GeV Higgs boson within the uncertainties. Finally, a measurement of the signal strength modifiers on combined 77.4 fb−1 of data collected in 2016 and 2017 is also performed and is again found to be compatible with the SM predictions. New frontiers are reached as the statistical and systematical contributions to the total uncertainty on the inclusive signal strength measurement are found to be of the similar size

In this thesis a search for supersymmetric particles in the data collected by CMS at center of mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The search is focused on the selection of events characterized by pairs of opposite sign electrons or muons. This particular exclusive signature (which we refer to as opposite sign dilepton signature) has a very good background rejection power and would permit systematic studies of the supersymmetric particles produced, once a sufficient amount of them is collected. The bulk of the analysis consists on the isolation of the events of new physics, through the performance of some selection cuts on properly chosen discriminating variables. Even if, after this step, most part of the standard model background is actually rejected, an estimate of the background events still surviving (mainly top pairs) is mandatory. The control of any residual background is here made using a particular data-driven method, involving many discriminating variables. Using this technique, we were able to set exclusion limits in the cMSSM plane at 95% of confidence level, using a Bayesian approach.

The highly celebrated discovery of a new particle with a mass of 125 GeV in proton-proton collisions by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2012 has been shown to be compatible with the Standard Model description of the Higgs boson. However, in order to fully verify the Standard Model nature of the Higgs boson, most of its properties still remain to be measured. Such measurements include differential cross section measurements, which are shown here for the H→WW decay channel and the coupling of the Higgs boson to bottom quarks, for which a study of future prospects is presented. Differential fiducial cross section measurements of the Higgs boson were performed in the H → WW*→lvlv channel at the ATLAS detector with 20 fb−1 of √s = 8 TeV collision data. For Higgs bosons produced by gluon-gluon fusion, the cross section is measured as a function of kinematic variables, including transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs boson, as well as the number of jets associated with the Higgs event. The obtained distributions are unfolded to a fiducial volume using a two-dimensional iterative Bayesian algorithm. The measured fiducial differential cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators. The total cross section measured in the fiducial volume defined by the charged lepton and neutrino kinematic properties is 36.0 ± 9.7 fb. Additionally the jet-veto efficiency in the fiducial volume is extracted from the differential cross sections. An analysis is presented of Higgs boson production and decay into bottom quarks in association with a vector boson at the ATLAS detector for the future high-luminosity LHC with proton-proton collisions at √s = 14 TeV. The vector bosons are reconstructed from Z→l+l− or W→lv final states, where l is an electron or muon. The analysis uses generator-level Monte Carlo samples to which efficiency and resolution smearing functions are applied. These reproduce the expected resolution of the upgraded ATLAS detector for the foreseen amount of pile-up due to multiple overlapping proton-proton collisions. The analysis of the ZH(→ l+l−b¯b) channel is presented and results are combined with the WH(→lvb¯b) channel from a corresponding study. For an integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 using an average pile-up of 60, the expected significance is 3.9 σ with an expected error on the signal strength of 25%. Likewise, for 3000 fb−1 using an average pileup of 140 the expected significance is 8.8 σ , and the error on the signal strength is expected to be about 15%.

The associated production of a top quark pair with a Higgs boson (ttH) is very important because, in spite of its small production cross section, it enables the direct measurement of the Yukawa coupling of the Higgs boson to the top quark. The final states of ttH events depend on the specific decay of the top quarks and of the Higgs boson, and different topologies are originated, with or without energetic leptons in the final states. The events studied in this work correspond to an all-jet topology, with some of these jets which might be subject to boost given the large transverse momentum involved. It is therefore essential to classify the final states in terms of the number of "resolved" and "boosted" jets, and for each case different triggers are required. Since the background yields (mainly from top quark-antiquark pairs and QCD multijet production) are much larger than the expected signal, special care needs to be used to reduce them. The event selection is based on multivariate analysis algorithms which can distinguish signal from background events, and boosted jets associated to top quarks, to the Higgs bosons or to generic light quarks, enabling the definition of different event categories. The statistical performance of this analysis is characterised by two essential parameters, the upper limits on the signal strength and the signal significance. The expected upper limits on the signal strength are estimated at 95% confidence level, along with the signal significance, for each category and for the combination of all categories.

Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le contexte des premières années d'exploitation du Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Cet appareil monumental a été construit dans le but d'explorer la physique de l'infiniment petit à l'échelle du TeV. Un des objectifs majeurs du LHC est la recherche du boson de Higgs. Sa découverte validerait le mécanisme de brisure de symétrie électrofaible, au travers duquel les bosons W et Z acquièrent leur masse. L'expérience Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) analyse les collisions de protons du LHC. Leur fréquence élevée (20 MHz) permet d'observer des phénomènes rares, comme la production et la désintégration d'un boson de Higgs, mais elle nécessite alors une sélection rapide des collisions intéressantes, par un système de déclenchement. Les ressources informatiques disponibles pour le stockage et l'analyse des données imposent une limite au taux de déclenchement : la bande passante, répartie entre les différents signaux physiques, doit donc être optimisée. Dans un premier temps, j'ai étudié le déclenchement sur les électrons : ils constituent une signature claire dans l'environnement hadronique intense du LHC et permettent à la fois des mesures de haute précision et la recherche de signaux rares. Ils font partie des états finaux étudiés par un grand nombre d'analyses (Higgs, électrofaible, etc.). Dès les premières collisions en 2010, la présence de signaux anormaux dans l'électronique de lecture du calorimètre électromagnétique (ECAL) constituait une source d'augmentation incontrôlée du taux de déclenchement. En effet, leur taux de production augmentait avec l'énergie et l'intensité des collisions : ils étaient susceptibles de saturer la bande passante dès 2011, affectant gravement les performances de physique de CMS. J'ai optimisé l'algorithme d'élimination de ces signaux en conservant une excellente efficacité de déclenchement sur les électrons, pour les prises de données en 2011. D'autre part, l'intensité croissante des collisions au LHC fait perdre leur transparence aux cristaux du ECAL, induisant une inefficacité de déclenchement. La mise en place de corrections hebdomadaires de l'étalonnage du système de déclenchement a permis de compenser cette inefficacité. Dans un second temps, j'ai participé à la recherche du boson de Higgs dans son mode de désintégration en deux leptons tau. Cette analyse est la seule qui puisse actuellement vérifier le couplage du boson de Higgs aux leptons. Le lepton tau se désintégrant soit en lepton plus léger (électron ou muon), soit en hadrons, six états finaux sont possibles. Je me suis concentré sur les états finaux semi-leptoniques (électron/muon et hadrons), où la signification statistique du signal est maximale. Les algorithmes de déclenchement dédiés à cette analyse sélectionnent un lepton (électron ou muon) et un " tau hadronique " d'impulsions transverses élevées. Cependant, cette sélection élimine la moitié du signal, ce qui a motivé la mise en place d'algorithmes sélectionnant des leptons de basse impulsion, incluant une coupure sur l'énergie transverse manquante. Celle-ci limite le taux de déclenchement et sélectionne des évènements contenant des neutrinos, caractéristiques des désintégrations du lepton tau. Les distributions de masse invariante des processus de bruit de fond et de signal permettent de quantifier la compatibilité entre les données et la présence ou l'absence du signal. La combinaison de l'ensemble des états finaux conduit à l'observation d'un excès d'évènements sur un large intervalle de masse. Sa signification statistique vaut 3,2 déviations standard à 125 GeV ; la masse du boson mesurée dans ce canal vaut 122 ± 7 GeV. Cette mesure constitue la toute première évidence d'un couplage entre le boson de Higgs et le lepton tau.

This thesis presents a three year work inside the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration, mainly focused on data analysis from proton-proton collisions collected by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a centre of mass energy of 8 TeV (LHC Run-I). My efforts were dedicated to searches for heavy particles decaying into di-boson pairs exploring boosted topologies, where the fragmentation products of hadronically decaying vector bosons overlap in the detector, preventing their identification as resolved jets. Several benchmark scenarios for new physics have been considered, from heavy Standard Model (SM) like Higgs boson to beyond the SM (BSM) extensions of the Higgs sector and massive gravitons predicted by Warped Extra Dimension (WED) models. In order to explore these boosted signatures, I developed specific algorithms to identify boosted vector bosons decaying hadronically (V-jets), which are also applied in other searches for new physics characterized high p_{T} jets originating from W/Z-boson, Higgs boson or top quark decays. These algorithms have been improved and new methods have been tested on detailed simulation, reproducing the conditions of the present data taking (LHC Run-II), and finally commissioned with first 13 TeV collisions. In particular, I performed a semi-leptonic WW search for heavy resonances with 8 TeV data, as well as the combination with other exclusive searches in di-boson final states. With no significant excess observed above the predicted background yield, upper limits have been produced in the context of massive gravitons predicted by Bulk and Randall-Sundrum WED models. Eventually, a model independent re-interpretation of the analysis is also performed. In addition, I developed also a search for SM-like Higgs boson at high mass, in the boosted semi-leptonic WW final state. The analysis is categorised in exclusive jet bins to disentangle the gluon fusion production from the vector boson fusion mode. The result is also interpreted in the context of a BSM heavy Higgs scenario, called electroweak singlet model, which predicts the existence of two Higgs scalars with the mass of the lighter one being around 125 GeV. Upper limits on these models are set through an unbinned fit to the di-boson invariant mass spectrum, where a deviation with a local significance of about 2.5 $\sigma$ has been observed in the VBF category. Eventually, I performed feasibility studies for the Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) in view of the CMS detector upgrade, foreseen for the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) data taking. If no evidence for new physics will be observed with Run-II collisions, this rare process would become crucial to search for BSM physics via precision electroweak measurements. Two scattering topologies have been considered: the scattering of same sign W-boson pairs and the fully leptonic WZ boson one. The ultimate goal is to assess the future CMS sensitivity to the longitudinal electroweak scattering, to partial unitarized scenarios and to new physics in the EWSB sector, which is parametrized through anomalies in the vector boson self couplings. In addition, the difference in the performance between the proposed upgraded CMS detector and the present one, which will undergo a strong degradation due to radiation damage, is investigated showing how the upgraded technology allows better performances in all the considered benchmark measurements.

Cette thèse présente une étude du secteur scalaire dans le cadre du modèle standard (MS), ainsi que la recherche d'un secteur scalaire étendu dans des théories au-delà du MS. Ces analyses ont en commun la désintégration d'au moins un des bosons scalaires en une paire de leptons tau. Les résultats sont basés sur les données collectées par le détecteur CMS pendant le Run-1 du LHC, lors de collisions proton-proton à une énergie dans le centre de masse de 7 ou 8 TeV. Le boson découvert en 2012, H, semble compatible avec un boson de Brout-Englert-Higgs (BEH) du MS, mais ce constat se base essentiellement sur l'étude des modes de désintégration bosoniques. Le mode de désintégration H->tau tau est le canal fermionique le plus sensible, et permet de tester les couplages de Yukawa du nouveau boson. Cette thèse décrit dans un premier temps la recherche d'un boson scalaire se désintégrant en leptons tau et produit en association avec un boson vecteur. Les données du Run-1 ne sont pas sensibles aux petites sections efficaces de production prédites dans le SM, mais la combinaison avec les autres modes de production montre avec évidence l'existence de désintégrations du boson H en taus. De nombreux modèles au-delà du MS, tels que l'extension supersymétrique minimale du MS (MSSM) ou les modèles avec deux doublets scalaires (2HDM), prédisent l'existence de plusieurs boson scalaires. Quatre recherches d'un secteur scalaire étendu au-delà du MS sont présentées dans cette thèse. La première analyse recherche un pseudoscalaire avec une masse entre 220 et 350 GeV, se désintégrant en un boson scalaire similaire à celui du MS et en un boson Z, dans l'état final avec deux taus et deux leptons légers. La deuxième analyse explore la possibilité d'une désintégration exotique de la nouvelle particule en deux bosons scalaires plus légers dans l'état final avec deux muons et deux leptons tau. Dans le cadre de la troisième analyse, une région en masse quasiment inexplorée auparavant au LHC est testée par la recherche d'un pseudoscalaire avec une masse entre 25 et 80 GeV, se désintégrant en leptons tau et produit en association avec deux quarks b, dans le contexte des 2HDM. La dernière analyse recherche une résonance lourde se désintégrant en une paire de leptons tau dans le contexte du MSSM. Aucun indice de nouvelle physique n'a été trouvé dans les analyses décrites ci-dessus, mais des limites strictes sur les sections efficaces des différents signaux ont été déterminées. This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as different searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the standard model (BSM). All analyses have in common the fact that at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of tau leptons. The results exploit the data collected by the CMS detector during LHC Run-1, in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.The particle discovered in 2012, H, looks compatible with a SM Brout-Englert-Higgs boson, but this statement is driven by the bosonic decay modes. The H-> tau tau decay mode is the most sensitive fermionic decay channel, and allows to test the Yukawa couplings of the new particle. The search for the SM scalar boson decaying to tau leptons, and produced in association with a massive vector boson W or Z, is described in this thesis. Even though a good background rejection can be achieved by selecting the leptons originating from the vector boson, Run-1 data are not sensitive to the small production cross sections predicted in the SM for the scalar boson. The combination with the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production searches leads to an evidence for the decay of the H boson to tau leptons.Many BSM models, such as the minimal supersymmetric SM (MSSM) or models with two scalar doublets (2HDM), predict the existence of several scalar bosons. The decays of these bosons to tau leptons can be enhanced in some scenarios depending on the model parameters, which makes the di-tau decay mode powerful to discover BSM physics. Four searches for an extended scalar sector are detailed in this thesis. The first analysis searches for a pseudoscalar boson with a mass between 220 and 350 GeV, decaying to an SM-like scalar boson and a Z boson, in the final state with two light leptons and two tau leptons. Second, a search for the exotic decay of the new particle H to a pair of light pseudoscalar bosons, which is still allowed by all measurements made up to now, in the final state with two muons and two tau leptons is performed. Third, a mass region almost never explored at the LHC is probed by the search of a light pseudoscalar, with a mass between 25 and 80 GeV, decaying to tau leptons and produced in association with b quarks. The last analysis describes the search for a heavy resonance in the MSSM, decaying to a pair of tau leptons. None of these analyses has found any hint of new physics beyond the SM, but stringent limits on the cross section of such signals could be set. Le boson de Higgs dans le mode de désintégration WW* est observé avec un excès d'événements sur le bruit de fond de 6,1 écarts-types dans l'état final avec dilepton, alors que l’importance du signal attendu pour le boson de Higgs du modèle standard est de 5,8 écarts-types. Une indication pour la production du processus en fusion de bosons vecteurs (VBF) est également obtenue avec une importance de 3,2 écarts-types. Les résultats sont obtenus à partir d'un échantillon de données en collisions proton-proton enregistrées par le détecteur ATLAS au LHC, qui correspond à une luminosité intégrée de 4,5fb-1 à √s = 7 TeV et 20,3fb-1 à √s = 8 TeV. Tous les canaux de saveur leptonique (ee/μμ et eμ/μe)) sont analysés, y compris de différentes catégories en multiplicité de jets (nj = 0, 1,≥ 2). Les canaux ayant différentes saveurs leptoniques eμ/μe ont la meilleure sensibilité au signal. Les catégories à basse multiplicité de jet sont contribuées principalement par la production du processus en fusion de gluon-gluon (ggF), tandis que la catégorie à haute multiplicité est plus sensible à la production VBF. Les bruits de fond dans différents canaux et catégories varient et leurs contributions sont obtenues dans la plupart de cas à partir des données avec des régions de contrôle ou validation. Les bruits de fond dominants sont les productions WW et le quark top. Dans les canaux ayant la même saveur leptonique, la contribution Drell-Yan est aussi une autre source importante. Pour le boson de Higgs à 125,36GeV, le rapport du signal mesuré sur celui du modèle standard est de 1,09+0,16-0,15 (stat.) +0,17-0,14 (syst.). Les rapports correspondants pour les productions ggF et VBF sont de 1,02±0, 19 (stat.) +0,22-0,18 (syst.) et 1,27+0,44-0,40 (stat.) +0,30-0,21 (syst.), respectivement. La section efficace totale mesurée à √s = 8 TeV est de σ(gg → H → WW∗) =8TeV est de σ(gg → H → WW∗) et σ(VBFH → WW∗) = 0,51+0,17−0,15 (stat.)+0,13−0,08 (syst.) pb. La section efficace fiducielle est aussi mesurée pour la production ggF dans l'était final exclusif avec zéro ou un seul jet. En plus des couplages, d'autres propriétés du boson de Higgs, notamment le nombre quantique de spin et la largeur totale de désintégration, sont également étudiées en utilisant les données de 8TeV et les canaux ayant différentes saveurs leptoniques seulement. L'étude du spin est basée sur un échantillon de données dominé par les événements sous le pic de résonance en utilisant les catégories de jet nj ≤ 1. L'hypothèse sur le spin-parité JCP = 0++ du modèle standard est comparée à d'autres hypothèses. Les données sont compatibles avec le modèle standard et les limites sont placées sur des hypothèses alternatives de spin. Les événements dans la queue hors pic de résonance à haute masse dans la catégorie inclusive de jet sont ensuite utilisés pour mesurer les couplages du boson de Higgs hors de sa couche de masse et pour imposer une contrainte sur la limite supérieure de la largeur totale du boson de Higgs, lorsque certaines hypothèses sont faites The Higgs boson decays to WW* is observed based on an excess of events over background of 6.1 standard deviations in the dilepton final state including all flavour channels (ee/μμ and eμ/μe) and jet multiplicity categories (nj = 0, 1,≥ 2), where theStandard Model expectation is 5.8 standard deviations. Evidence for thevector-boson fusion (VBF) production process is also obtained with a significance of3.2 standard deviations. The different favour channels eμ/μe have the best expected signal sensitivity. The low jet multiplicity categories are dominantly contributed by the gluon-gluon fusion (ggF) production process whereas the large jet multiplicity category has the best sensitivity to the VBF production process. The results are obtained from proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to 4.5fb-1 at √s = 7TeV and 20.3fb-1 at √s = 8TeV. The background contribution in each channel and jet multiplicity category varies and is determined mostly with data-driven techniques with dedicated control or validation regions. The dominant background processes are the continuum WW and top quark productions. In the same flavour channels (ee/μμ), the Drell-Yan process is another important background source. For a Higgs boson mass of 125.36GeV, the ratio of the measured value to the expected value of the total production cross section times branching ratio fraction is 1.09+0.16-0.15 (stat.) +0.17-0.14 (syst.). The corresponding ratios for the gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production modes are 1.02 ± 0.19 (stat.)+0.22−0.18 (syst.) and 1.27+0.44-0.40 (stat.) +0.30-0.21 (syst.), respectively. At √s = 8TeV, the total production cross section is measured to beσ(gg → H → WW∗) = 4.6±0.9 (stat.)+0.8−0.7 (syst.) pb σ(VBFH → WW∗) = 0.51+0.17−0.15 (stat.)+0.13−0.08 (syst.) pb. The fiducial cross section is determined for the gluon-fusion process in exclusive final states with zero and one associated jet. In addition to the on-shell couplings, other properties of the Higgs boson, namely the spin quantum number and the total decay width, are also studied using the 8TeV data and the different flavour channels only. The spin study is based on the on-shell dominated event sample using the nj ≤ 1 jet categories. The Standard Model spin-parity JCP = 0++ hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model and limits are placed on alternative spin hypotheses.The off-shell events in the high mass tail from the inclusive jet category are then used to measure the off-shell couplings and impose a constraint on the upper limit of the total width of the Higgs boson indirectly, when certain assumptions are made

Avec les donnees recueillies aupres des faisceaux de hadrons et d'electrons au cern, nous avons pu mesurer les principales caracteristiques des cristaux de pbwo4 : rendement lumineux, resolution en energie et en position, non uniformite et dommages par radiations. Pour suivre l'effet de ces dommages par radiation, nous avons effectue les premiers tests de suivi en lumiere. Nous avons aussi teste et caracterise differentes chaines electroniques integrees afin de mettre au point un chaine complete integree (photodetecteur, amplificateur et compresseur) susceptible d'etre utilisee dans l'experience cms.

Cette thèse présente la mise en évidence dans l'expérience CMS d'un nouveau boson dans la voie H→ZZ et la contribution à la découverte de ce nouveau boson à une masse proche de 125 GeV dans l'expérience CMS au CERN. La mesure des propriétés est passée en revue. Les résultats sont obtenus par une analyse inclusive du canal H→ZZ→ 4l , i. E. Où chacun des bosons Z se désintègre en une paire de leptons (l ), électrons ou muons. La recherche du boson de Higgs couvre toutes les hypothèses de masse dans le domaine 110 < mH < 1000 GeV. L'analyse utilise les données de collisions proton-proton enregistrées par le détecteur CMS au collisionneur LHC, correspondants à des luminosités intégrées de 5. 1 fb^−1 a sqrt(s) = 7 TeV et 12. 2 fb^−1 at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. Le nouveau boson est observé avec une signifiance statistique au-desus du bruit de fond attendu de 4. 5 écarts standards. L'intensité du signal μ, normalisé à l'attendu pour le boson de Higgs du modèle standard, est mesuré à une valeur de μ = 0. 80+0. 35-0. 28 a 126 GeV. Une mesure précise de la masse du nouveau boson a été effectué et donne 126. 2 ± 0. 6 (stat) ±0. 2 (syst) GeV. L'hypothèse d'un boson scalaire 0+ est en accord avec l'observation. Les données expérimentales défavorisent l'hypothèse pseudoscalaire 0− avec CLs de 2. 4%. Aucun autre excès significatif n'est observé, et des limites supérieures d'exclusions sont obtenues à 95% de niveau de confiance pour les domaines 113-116 GeV et 129-720 GeV, alors que la domaine d'exclusion attendue en absence du boson de Higgs est de 118-670 GeV. Pour cette thèse, une emphase particulière a été mis sur l'isolation des leptons. L'isolation des leptons fait parties des observables clefs sur le chemin de la découverte. En même temps, l'isolation est très sensible aux conditions pile-up de la machine LHC. Cette thèse établit une méthode robuste qui permet de marginaliser l'effet de pile-up sur l'isolation. La méthode est maintenant utilisée à travers les différentes analyses de CMS. Une attention particulière a également été mis sur les mesures de l'efficacité de l'identification des leptons, l'isolation et le paramètre d'impact directement à partir de données à l'aide désintégrations leptoniques de boson Z. Les mesures ont été utilisées pour les corrections finales appliquées aux leptons lors du calcul de la signifiance statistique de l'excès des événements à quatre leptons This thesis reports the discovery of the new boson recently observed at a mass near 125 GeV in the CMS experiment at CERN. The measurements of the properties of the new boson are reviewed. The results are obtained from a comprehensive search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H → ZZ decay channel, where both Z bosons decay to electron or muon lepton pairs. The search covers Higgs boson mass hypotheses in the range 110 < mH < 1000 GeV. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5. 1 fb^−1 at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and 12. 2 fb^−1 at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The new boson is observed with a local significance above the expected background of 4. 5 standard deviations. The signal strength μ, relative to the expectation for the standard model Higgs boson, is measured to be μ = 0. 80+0. 35-0. 28 at 126 GeV. A precise measurement of its mass has been performed and gives 126. 2 ± 0. 6 (stat) ±0. 2 (syst) GeV. The hypothesis 0+ of the standard model for the spin J = 0 and parity P = +1 quantum numbers is found to be consistent with the observation. The data disfavour the pseudoscalar hypothesis 0− with a CLs value of 2. 4%. No other significant excess is found, and upper limits at 95% confidence level exclude the ranges 113-116 GeV and 129-720 GeV while the expected exclusion range for the standard model Higgs boson is 118-670 GeV. A special emphases throughout the thesis has been put on lepton isolation. Lepton isolation being one of the key observables for the discovery is highly susceptible to pile-up conditions of the LHC machine. This thesis establishes a robust method to marginalize the effect of pile-up on isolation. The method is now used across different analysis in CMS. A special attention has also been put on measurements of the efficiencies of lepton identification, isolation and impact parameter requirements directly from data using leptonic decays of Z boson. The measurements were used to produce final per lepton scale factors when calculating the significance of excess of four lepton events

La recherche du boson de higgs neutre a travers sa desintegration en deux photons fournit un signal tres prometteur pour une masse comprise entre 90 et 150 gev, mais necessite un calorimetre electromagnetique de tres haute resolution. Le calorimetre electromagnetique de cms doit etre compose de plus de 80000 cristaux en tungstate de plomb, pbwo#4. Dans la partie centrale, le baril, la lecture de la lumiere de scintillation est effectuee a l'aide de photodiodes a avalanche, un photosenseur en silicium avec gain interne, relativement nouveau en physique des hautes energies. En ce qui concerne l'electronique de lecture, l'energie disponible dans le centre de masse (14 tev) ainsi que la frequence des collisions (40 mhz) du lhc imposent des contraintes en ce qui concerne le traitement du signal jusqu'a l'acquisition. La solution retenue consiste a apparier deux photodiodes a avalanche, dont il faut controler tous les parametres (gain, dependance en temperature, courant d'obscurite,) et a les associer a un preamplificateur bas bruit, a grande gamme dynamique (50 mev - 2 tev) suivi d'un compresseur lineaire a quatre pentes et d'un convertisseur analogique-numerique a echantillonnage 12 bits, 40 mhz. Ce memoire presente les differents prototypes de calorimetre electromagnetique testes en faisceau de particules de hautes energies. Une resolution en energie de 0. 6% a 100 gev a ainsi ete obtenue avec une electronique de lecture conventionnelle, alors que dans le meme temps evoluait la chaine electronique en technologie integree, resistante aux radiations.

Une particule compatible avec le boson de Higgs du modèle standard de la physique des particules a été découverte au grand collisionneur de hadrons (LHC) en juillet 2012 par les expériences Atlas et CMS. A ce jour, l'ensemble des mesures des couplages de ce boson de Higgs sont compatibles avec ceux prédits par le modèle standard. Toutefois le modèle standard possède des limitations et d'autres théories, telles la supersymétrie, ont été bâties afin de pallier à ces manques. Certaines de ces théories prédisent en particulier un secteur scalaire enrichi avec la présence de bosons de Higgs additionnels.D'un point de vue expérimental, le canal de désintégration du boson de Higgs en deux photons offre une signature claire et permet d'explorer le secteur de Higgs avec une grande précision. Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse ont été effectués dans le cadre de l'expérience CMS au LHC.La première partie est dédiée à l'étude de la reconstruction expérimentale des photons. Tout d'abord, une méthode de correction en énergie des photons est exposée. Puis des prospectives concernant l'évolution de la qualité de leur reconstruction avec le vieillissement du détecteur sont présentées.La deuxième partie fait l'objet de la recherche d'un second boson de Higgs de basse masse(en dessous de 110 GeV) dans le canal di-photon. Les résultats complets obtenus avec le jeu de données collecté en 2012, ayant fait l'objet d'une publication officielle, sont tout d'abord présentés. Les premiers résultats obtenus avec le jeu de données collecté en 2015 sont enfin introduits A particle compatible with the Standard Model Higgs boson has been discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in July 2012 by Atlas and CMS experiments. All the couplings measurements are so far compatible with those predicted by the Standard Model. However, this model is not able to address several fundamental physics issues and theories beyond the Standard Model, such as supersymmetry, have been proposed to address these questions. Some of them predict an extended Higgs sector with additional scalar or pseudoscalars at low mass.On the experimental point of view, the diphoton decay channel provides a clear signature and allows us to explore the Higgs sector with high precision.The studies presented in this thesis have been performed using the data collected by CMS at the LHC.The first part of the document is dedicated to photon reconstruction studies. First, a photon energy correction method is presented. Then, photon reconstruction performance is assessed in the context of the Phase I and Phase II detector upgrades, in high luminosity conditions.The second part of the document is dedicated to the search for an additional light Higgs boson (with a mass below 110 GeV) in the diphoton channel. First, the official results corresponding to the full 2012 dataset are exposed. Finally, results corresponding to 2015 data are presented

Dans ce document deux analyses des propriétés du boson de Higgs se désintégrant en 2 photons dans l'expérience CMS située auprès du LHC (Large Hadron Collider) sont présentées.Le document commence par une introduction théorique sur le Modèle Standard et sur la physique du boson de Higgs, suivie par une description détaillée de l'expérience CMS. En deuxième lieu, les algorithmes de réconstruction et identification des photons sont présentés, avec une attention particulière aux différences entre le premier et le deuxième run du LHC, le premier run (Run1) ayant été pris entre 2010 et 2012 avec une énergie dans le centre de masse de 7 puis 8 TeV, le deuxième (Run2) ayant commencé en 2015 avec une énergie dans le centre de masse de 13 TeV. Les performances des reconstructions du Run 1 et du Run 2 en ce qui concerne l'identification des photons sont comparées. Ensuite l'algorithme d’identification des photons pour l'analyse H->γγ et optimisé pour le Run2 est présenté. Pour ce faire une méthode d'analyse multivariée est utilisée. Les performances de l'identification des photons à 13 TeV sont enfin étudiées et une validation donnée-simulation est effectuée.Ensuite l'analyse H->γγ avec les premières données du Run2 est présentée. Les données utilisées correspondent à une luminosité intégrée de 12.9 fb⁻¹. Une catégorisation des événements est faite, afin de rendre maximale la signification statistique du signal et d’étudier les différents modes de production du boson de Higgs. La signification statistique observée pour le boson de Higgs du Modèle Standard est 1.7 sigma, pour une signification attendue de 2.7 sigma.Enfin une étude de faisabilité ayant pour but de contraindre les couplages anomaux du boson de Higgs aux bosons de jauges est présentée. Pour cette analyse les données à 8 TeV collectées pendant le Run 1 du LHC, correspondant a' une luminosité intégrée de 19.5/fb sont utilisées. Cette analyse exploite la production du boson de Higgs par fusion de bosons-vecteurs (VBF), avec le Higgs se désintégrant ensuite en 2 photons. Les distributions cinématiques des jets et des photons, qui dépendent de l'hypothèse de spin-parité, sont utilisées pour construire des discriminants capables de séparer les différentes hypothèses de spin-parité. Ces discriminants permettent de définir différentes régions de l'espace des phases enrichies en signal de différentes spin-parité. Les différents nombres d’événements de signal sont extraits dans chaque région par un ajustement de la masse invariante diphoton, permettant de déterminer les contributions respectives des différents signaux et permettant ainsi de contraindre la production de boson de Higgs pseudo-scalaire (spin-parité 0-) In this document two analyses of the properties of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel with the CMS experiment at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) are presented.The document starts with a theoretical introduction of the Standard Model and the Higgs boson physics, followed by a detailed description of the CMS detector.Then, photon reconstruction and identification algorithms are presented, with a particular focus on the differences between the first and the second run of the LHC, the first run (Run1) took place from 2010 to 2012 with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 and then 8 TeV, while the second run (Run2) started in 2015 with a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Performances of Run1 and Run2 reconstructions from the photon identification point of view are compared. Then the photon identification algorithm for the H->γγ analysis optimised for Run2 is presented. To do that a multivariate analysis method is used. Performances of the photon identification at 13 TeV are finally studied and a data-simulation validation is performed.Afterwards, the H->γγ analysis using the first Run2 data is presented. The analysis is performed with a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7/fb. An event classification is performed to maximize signal significance and to studyspecific Higgs boson production modes. The observed significance for the standard model Higgs boson is 1.7 sigma, while a significance of 2.7 sigma is expected.Finally a feasibility study, having the aim of constraining the anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to the vector bosons, is presented. This analysis is performed using the data collected at 8 TeV during Run1 at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5/fb. This analysis exploits the production of the Higgs boson through vector boson fusion (VBF), with the Higgs decaying to 2 photons. The kinematic distributions of the dijet and diphoton systems, which depend from the spin-parity hypothesis, are used to build some discriminants able to discriminate between different spin-parity hypotheses. These discriminants allow to define different regions of the phase-space enriched with a certain spin-parity process. The Higgs boson signal yield is extracted in each region from a fit to the diphoton mass, allowing to determine the contributions of the different processes and then constrain the production of a pseudo-scalar (spin-parity 0-) Higgs boson

Cette thèse présente une recherche de la production de paires de bosons de Higgs en utilisant les données des collision proton-proton à sqrt(s) = 13 TeV enregistrées avec les détecteur CMS auprès du LHC du CERN. Les évènements avec les deux boson de Higgs se désintégrant en une paire de quark b et de leptons tau (HH -> bb tau+tau-) sont utilisés pour l’exploration des mécanismes de production résonante et non-résonante.La mesure de la production de HH est expérimentalement difficile à cause de la petite section efficace prévue par le modèle standard de la physique des particules. Sa recherche est néanmoins motivée par les informations qu’elle peut révéler sur la nature de la brisure de la symétrie électrofaible. La production de HH donne accès à l’auto-couplage trilineaire du boson de Higgs et, par conséquent, à la forme du potentiel scalaire. En plus, elle est sensible à la présence de physique au-délà du modèle standard. La présence de nouvelles résonances se désintégrant en HH et de couplages anormales du boson de Higgs sont étudiées dans ce travail.Les leptons tau ont un rôle de premier plan dans cette recherche et un effort important a été consacré à l’amélioration de leur efficacité de sélection par le système de déclenchement de l’expérience CMS. En particulier, le déclenchement de premier niveau (L1) a été amélioré pour faire face aux nouvelles conditions des collisions du Run II du LHC, marqué par une augmentation de l’énergie dans le centre de masse et de la luminosité instantanée. Ce nouveau système de déclenchement permet de développer un algorithme spécifique pour la reconstruction des leptons tau se désintégrant en hadrons (tauh) et un neutrino.Cet algorithme se fonde une technique avancée de regroupement dynamique de l’énergie et utilise des critères dédiés pour la réjection du bruit de fond. Le développement, l’implementation, et la vérification de son fonctionnement pour le redémarrage du LHC sont présentés ici. La performance de l’algorithme est initialement évaluée grâce à une simulation et puis mesurée avec les données de l’expérience CMS. Son excellente performance est un element essentiel dans la recherche de la production de HH.L’investigation du processus HH -> bb tau+tau- utilise les trois canaux de désintégration du système tau+tau- avec au moins un tauh dans l’état final. La sélections et categorisation des évènements sont conçues pour optimiser la sensibilité de la recherche, et des techniques d’analyse multivariés sont mises en place pour distinguer le signal du bruit de fond.Les résultats sont présentés en utilisant une luminosité intégrée de 35.9 fb-1. Ils sont compatibles, dans les incertitudes expérimentales, avec les prédictions du modèle standard pour les bruits de fond. Des limites supérieures à la production résonante de HH sont évaluées et interprétées dans le contexte du modèle standard supersymmétrique minimal. Les limites supérieures à la production non-résonante permettent de contraindre l’espace des paramètres des couplages anormales du boson de Higgs. Les limites supérieures observées et attendues correspondent respectivement à environ 30 et 25 fois la prédiction du modèle standard. Ils représentent l’un des résultats les plus sensibles à la production de HH atteint jusqu'à présent au LHC.Les perspectives pour l‘observation de la production de HH au LHC sont enfin discutées. Les résultats précédemment obtenus sont extrapolés à une luminosité intégrée de 3000 fb-1 sous des différentes assomptions pour la performance du détecteur et de l’analyse This thesis describes a search for Higgs boson pair (HH) production using proton-proton collision data collected at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events with one Higgs boson decaying into two bottom quarks and the other decaying into two tau leptons (HH -> bb tau+tau-) are explored to investigate both resonant and nonresonant production mechanisms. The measurement of HH production is experimentally challenging because of the tiny cross section predicted by the standard model of particle physics (SM). However, this process can reveal invaluable information on the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking by giving access to the Higgs boson trilinear self-coupling and, consequently, to the shape of the scalar potential itself. Moreover, HH production is sensitive to the presence of physics beyond the SM. Both the presence of new states decaying to HH and of anomalous Higgs boson couplings are investigated in this work.Tau leptons have a key role in this search and considerable effort has been devoted to ensure a high efficiency in their selection by the trigger system of the CMS experiment. In particular, the CMS Level-1 (L1) trigger was upgraded to face the increase in the centre-of-mass energy and instantaneous luminosity conditions expected for the LHC Run II operations. The upgrade opened up the possibility to develop an efficient and dedicated algorithm to reconstruct tau leptons decaying to hadrons (tauh) and a neutrino.The tau algorithm implements a sophisticated dynamic energy clustering technique and dedicated background rejection criteria. Its development, optimisation, implementation, and commissioning for the LHC restart are presented. The algorithm performance is initially demonstrated using a simulation and subsequently measured with the data collected with the CMS experiment. The excellent performance achieved is an essential element of the search for HH production.The investigation of the HH -> bb tau+tau- process explores the three decay modes of the tau+tau- system with at least one tauh object in the final state. A dedicated event selection and categorisation is developed and optimised to enhance the sensitivity, and multivariate techniques are applied for the first time to these final states to separate the signal from the background.Results are derived using an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. They are found to be consistent, within uncertainties, with the SM background predictions. Upper limits on resonant production are set and interpreted in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Upper limits on nonresonant production constrain the parameter space for anomalous Higgs boson couplings. The observed and expected upper limit are about 30 and 25 times the SM prediction, respectively, corresponding to one of the most stringent limits set so far at the LHC.Finally, prospects for future measurements of HH production at the LHC are evaluated by extrapolating the current results to an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb-1 under different detector and analysis performance scenarios

Cette thèse présente le travail de trois ans effectué dans l'expérience CMS, dans le contexte des premières collisions du LHC. L'étude porte en particulier sur les électrons, objets essentiels pour les analyses de recherche en canaux multi-leptons, notamment l'analyse H → ZZ(∗) → 4ℓ. Durant les premiers mois de collisions, nous avons pris part à la validation des données enregistrées par le calorimètre électromagnétique. Nous avons mesuré l'efficacité du système de déclenchement de niveau 1 en électrons et photons tout au long de l'année 2010. L'efficacité sur le plateau est de 99.6 % (resp. 98.5 %) pour des électrons dans le tonneau (resp. dans les bouchons) du calorimètre. En vue d'optimiser le potentiel de découverte, nous avons mis au point un nouvel algorithme de mesure de la charge des électrons. Dans CMS, celle-ci est affectée par la grande quantité de matière présente dans le trajectographe. Les performances de cet algorithme ont été mesurées sur les données enregistrées en 2010, sur des électrons issus de désintégrations de bosons Z, passant une sélection standard. La probabilité d'erreur est de 1.06 % (0.19 % après une sélection spécifique), en accord avec la simulation. L'analyse de physique effectuée dans cette thèse porte sur la recherche de bosons de Higgs doublement chargés, dans leurs désintégrations en paires de leptons. Avec les données enregistrées en 2010, un événement de bruit de fond est attendu à la fin de la sélection, pour un nombre d'événements de signal qui dépend de l'hypothèse de masse et du modèle considéré. Un événement est observé dans les données, en accord avec le bruit de fond attendu, ce qui permet d'exclure ce signal sur des domaines de masse plus larges que précédemment : la limite varie de 122 GeV à 176 GeV en fonction du modèle.

Ce document de thèse traite de la mesure de la masse et de la largeur du nouveau boson découvert récemment au Large Hadron Collider (LHC), candidat pour être le boson de Higgs du modèle standard. L’analyse utlise les collisions protons-protons enregistrées par le détec- teur Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) au LHC, correspondant à des luminosités integrées de 5. 1 fb−1 à 7 TeV d’énergie dans le centre de masse et de 19. 7 fb−1 à 8 TeV d’énergie dans le centre de masse. Les événements selectionnant le boson de Higgs via sa désintégration en ZZ, ou les bosons Z se désintègrent en paires d’électrons ou de muons, ont été exploités pour la mesure des propriétés du boson de Higgs. Une mesure précise de la masse a été effectuée et vaut 125. 6 ± 0. 4(stat) ± 0. 2 (syst) GeV. Des contraintes sur la largeur du boson de Higgs ont été établies en utilisant sa production hors-masse et sa désintégration en une paire de bosons Z, ou un des Z se désintègre en paire d’électrons ou de muons, et l’autre en une paire d’électrons, de muons ou de neutrinos. Le résultat obtenu est une limite supérieure sur la largeur du boson de Higgs à 22 MeV à 95% de niveau de confiance, ce qui correspond à 5. 4 fois la valeur attendue pour le modèle standard à la masse mesurée. Une attention particulière a été apportée à l’estimation de l’impulsion des électrons. La combinaison de l’estimation de l’impulsion par le trajectomètre et la mesure de l’énergie déposée dans le calorimètre électromagnétique, permettant une amélioration significative de la mesure de l’impulsion des électrons de bassse impulsion transverse, a été ré-optimisée et a joué un rôle essentiel dans la découverte du boson Higgs dans le canal en quatre leptons. L’échelle d’énergie ainsi que la résolution en énergie des électrons a été mesurée avec une grande précision en utilisant les bosons de Z se désintégrant en électrons This thesis document reports measurements of the mass and width of the new boson re- cently discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), candidating to be the Standard Model Higgs boson. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5. 1 fb−1 at 7 TeV center of mass energy and 19. 7 fb−1 at 8 TeV center of mass energy. Set of events selecting Higgs boson via the H → Z Z decay channel, where both Z bosons decay to electron or muon lepton pairs, is used for the Higgs boson properties measurements. A precise measurement of its mass has been performed and gives 125. 6 ± 0. 4(stat) ± 0. 2 (syst) GeV. Constraints on the Higgs boson width were established using its off-shell production and decay to a pair of Z bosons, where one Z boson decays to an electron or muon pair, and the other to an electron, muon, or neutrino pair. The obtained result is an upper limit on the Higgs boson width of 22 MeV at a 95% confidence level, which is 5. 4 times the expected value in the standard model at the measured mass. Throughout the thesis, a particular attention has been put on the elec- tron momentum estimation. The combination of the momentum estimate with the tracker and the energy measurement with the electromagnetic calorimeter, allowing a significant improvement of the low transverse impulsion electrons measurement of the momentum, has been revisited and played an essential role in the Higgs boson discovery in the 4 leptons decay channel. The electron energy scale and resolution have been measured with very high precision using the Z boson decaying in electrons

The performance of the HH->bbZZ (l) (l = e, mu) analysis is presented considering the possible High Energy upgrade of the LHC collider, at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 27 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 15000 fb^{-1}; a comparison of the results with the same study performed in the context of the High Luminosity LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of √s =14 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb^{-1}, is also reported. The Phase-II upgraded CMS detector, expected in 2024, is assumed in both the scenarios. The analysis is fully based on Monte Carlo simulations: the parton-level generation of signal and backgrounds is performed with MADGRAPH5_AMC@NLO, while parton showering and hadronization are achieved with PYTHIA8; the detector response is then obtained in the parametric framework provided by DELPHES. A limit on the di-Higgs signal strength of r =1.45 is estimated at 95% CL in the inclusive bb4l channel, with a corresponding signal significance of 1.43 σ. A study on the prospects for the measurements of the Higgs self-coupling (λ_3) is also performed: the projected confidence interval on k_λ = λ_3/λ_3^{SM} is found to be [-0.7,7.2] at the 95% CL.

Lo studio descritto in questa tesi è volto a migliorare la selezione degli eventi per la ricerca del bosone di Higgs del Modello Standard nel canale di decadimento in due muoni con il rivelatore CMS ad LHC. Sono stati analizzati i dati raccolti durante il Run del 2017, corrispondenti ad una luminosità integrata di fb-1 . La selezione degli eventi studiata consiste in una categorizzazione del segnale basata sul meccanismo di produzione, che separi gli eventi prodotti tramite il meccanismo di Gluon Fusion (ggH) da quelli prodotti tramite il meccanismo di Vector Boson Fusion (VBF). La topologia di questi ultimi è caratterizzata dalla presenza di due jet, a grande angolo ed elevata massa invariante, prodotti insieme al bosone di Higgs. Questo consente una più efficace reiezione del fondo rispetto al caso inclusivo. A tutti gli eventi non VBF-like è stata applicata un'ulteriore categorizzazione basata sulla pseudorapidità del muone più in "avanti’’, che consente di sfruttare la diversa risoluzione del momento E' stata confrontata la significatività ottenuta combinando le quattro categorie con quella del caso inclusivo,ottenendo un guadagno di circa l'8\%.

Les contraintes expérimentales imposées par le futur collisionneur proton-proton LHC nécessitent l'emploi de détecteurs résistants aux radiations, ayant une réponse rapide ainsi qu'une fine granularité. Les MSGCs, initialement désignées pour équiper la partie externe du trajectographe de l'expérience CMS, dont la mise en service est prévue pour l'année 2005, fonctionnent dans des conditions limites rendant leur utilisation délicate. Des solutions alternatives sont donc proposées, certaines ayant pour but l'amélioration de ces conditions de fonctionnement, d'autres s'engageant dans le développement de nouvelles conceptions de chambres gazeuses. La partie expérimentale de cette thèse a porté sur la construction, le test et l'analyse d'un détecteur MICROMEGAS équipé d'une électronique rapide intégrée et de deux versions de GEM associées à différents types de substrats. Les résultats des tests témoignent des qualités intrinsèques (en termes d'efficacité, de résolution spatiale et de rapport signal sur bruit) de ces détecteurs, compatibles avec les exigences de CMS. Cependant, une étude en flux de hadrons a montré que le prototype Micromegas, malgré une très bonne robustesse, ne permet pas d'atteindre un point de fonctionnement stable dans ces conditions. La GEM couplée avec un substrat MSGC, du fait de la présence d'un étage de préamplification, laisse espérer une meilleure tenue aux hadrons. La dernière partie concerne l'analyse du potentiel de découverte du boson de Higgs dans le canal H0 → WW → qql±ν avec le détecteur CMS, pour des masses allant de 160 à 1000 GeV/c2. Il est montré que la superposition d'événements de biais minimum rend moins efficace la méthode d'étiquetage des jets à l'avant. Ce canal offre néanmoins une visibilité convenable du boson de Higgs de 180 à 700 GeV/c2, permettant ainsi une vérification complémentaire au mode de décroissance en quatre leptons.

The Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles, a model experimentally verified to an un-precedented level of accuracy, foresees the existence a scalar particle, the so-called Higgs boson, that breaks the electroweak symmetry and explains the non-null value of fermion masses. The pursue of the Higgs boson has been carried out by several experiments at the LEP II and Tevatron colliders in the past, but unsuccessfully. However, during the year 2011, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC began to observe some evidence of the elusive particle, finally confirming the discovering in 2012. Even if the Higgs boson and its observed properties represent a triumph for the Standard Model, there are many unresolved phenomena that the SM cannot explain. Several extensions have been proposed; some of the most relevant foresee several Higgs bosons instead of only one. After the commissioning of the LHC collider in 2011 and the first evidences of a light scalar boson, one of the fundamental questions to be answered was whether the new particle was the SM Higgs boson, or the lightest among the bosons foreseen by the theories extending the SM. The confirmation could come from the measurements of the Higgs couplings to the SM particles, or alternatively from the observation of new production processes and decays not predicted by the SM, or measured at a different rate. The associated production with b quarks of a Higgs boson, and its decay into pairs of b quarks, is a process with a small predicted cross section in the SM, and its observation would imply the presence of new physics. Previous searches at the Tevatron collider reported a slight excess in this channel. Afterwards the discovery of the Higgs boson in July 2012 by the CMS and ATLAS experiments, the knowledge of the properties of the Higgs boson and its mass become a valuable handle to increase the sensitivity of new physics searches. One of the most beneficial channels is the search of a heavy pseudoscalar A, and its decay into a Z boson and a light Higgs boson h, the latter assumed to be the recently-discovered 125 GeV boson. The Z boson is sought in its decay into a pair of electrons or muons, and the Higgs into a pair of b quarks. This channel, not predicted by the SM, probes a region in the parameter phase-space of beyond the SM theories which is, to some extent, complementary to the one of the multi-b search. Il modello standard (SM) delle particelle elementari, verificato sperimentalmente ad alta precisione, prevede l’esistenza di una particella scalare, il bosone di Higgs, grazie al quale avviene la rottura di simmetria elettrodebole ed è possibile spiegare le masse non nulle dei fermioni. La ricerca del bosone di Higgs è stata perseguita in passato da diversi esperimenti ai collisori LEP II e Tevatron, ma sempre con esito negativo. Solo nell’anno 2011, all’acceleratore LHC gli esperimenti ATLAS ed CMS hanno cominciato ad osservare le prime evidenze dell’elusiva particella, per poi confermane definitivamente la scoperta nel 2012. Tuttavia, pur essendo l’esistenza e le caratteristiche osservate del bosone di Higgs l’ennesima verifica sperimentale della validità del modello standard, esistono fenomeni naturali che esso non è in grado di spiegare, come ad esempio la massa dei neutrini o la materia oscura. Diverse estensioni del modello standard sono state proposte; diverse tra le più accreditate prevedono non uno, ma più bosoni. Con l’entrata a regime di LHC nel 2011 e le prime evidenze di un bosone di Higgs, una delle domande fondamentali a cui dare risposta era se il segnale che si stava osservando fosse dovuto al bosone di Higgs dello SM, oppure al più leggero dei diversi bosoni previsti dalle teorie oltre il modello standard. La risposta poteva venire sia dalla misura degli accoppiamenti dell’Higgs alle particelle dello SM, sia osservando processi e decadimenti non previsti dallo SM, o misurati con una frequenza maggiore dell’atteso. La produzione di un bosone di Higgs in associazione con quarks b, e il suo successivo decadimento in una coppia di quark b, è un processo difficilmente osservabile nel modello standard, pertanto la sua osservazione averebbe significato la presenza di nuova fisica. Precedenti ricerche a Tevatron hanno evidenziato un lieve eccesso in questo canale. In seguito alla scoperta del bosone di Higgs nel Luglio 2012 da parte degli esperimenti CMS e ATLAS, la conoscenza delle proprietà di questa particella, ivi compresa la sua massa, diventano informazioni che possono essere utilizzate per aumentare la sensibilità a ricerche di processi di nuova fisica. Uno dei canali che beneficia di questa informazione è la ricerca di un bosone pseudoscalare A, in particolare nel suo decadimento in un bosone Z e un bosone di Higgs leggero h, che si assume essere quello di massa 125 GeV recentemente scoperto. Lo stato finale consiste in una coppia di elettroni o muoni originati dal decadimento del bosone Z, e una coppia di quark b dal decadimento dell’Higgs. Questo canale, non previsto dallo SM, permette di sondare una regione dello spazio dei parametri di teorie oltre il modello standard per certi versi complementare a quella del canale con molti b nello stato finale.

Cette thèse présente une recherche du boson de Higgs du Modèle Standard (MS) et de son extension supersymétrique minimale (MSSM) dans la voie de désintégration en paires de leptons tau avec l'expérience CMS pendant les premières années d'exploitation du LHC. Après une introduction du contexte théorique pertinent pour la recherche du boson de Higgs du MS et du MSSM, les aspects phénoménologiques sont exposés. La découverte en 2012 d'un boson scalaire par les collaborations ATLAS et CMS est ensuite présentée. La description du détecteur CMS est abordée et la reconstruction des objets nécessaires a l'analyse est décrite. Une attention particulière est portée à la reconstruction des leptons tau avec notamment un algorithme d'isolation original incluant des informations sur le temps de vie. Nous avons optimisé cet outil en termes d'efficacité d'identification et de réjection de bruit de fond. Une nouvelle technique visant à supprimer des électrons reconstruits a tord comme des taus est également présentée: le développement d'un discriminateur anti-électron, basé sur une analyse multivariée réduit considérablement cette contamination tout en préservant l'efficacité d'identification. La recherche du boson de Higgs du MS et MSSM dans ses désintégrations en paires de taus est exposée. Les données utilisées correspondent à une luminosité intégrée de 4. 9 fb-1 avec une énergie dans le centre de masse sqrt{s}=7 TeV et 19. 7 fb-1 avec sqrt{s}=8 TeV collectées par CMS en 2011 et 2012 respectivement. Une attention particulière est portée aux canaux de désintégration semi-leptoniques: $$H\to\tau\tau\to l\tau_{h}$$ où $$l$$ représente un électron ou un muon et $$\tau_{h}$$ une désintégration hadronique de tau. La combinaison de tous les canaux de désintégration du Higgs du MS en paire de taus avec en particulier l'utilisation du nouveau discriminateur anti-électron conduit à un excès d'événements par rapport aux bruits de fond attendus. L'interprétation statistique correspond à 3. 2 déviations standard pour une masse de 125 GeV et la force du signal est compatible avec le boson de Higgs du Modèle Standard. Ce résultat constitue une indication directe du couplage du boson de Higgs aux leptons. Finalement, une stratégie originale de recherche de bosons de Higgs du MSSM est présentée. Elle combine d'une part la nouvelle technique d'isolation de tau et d'autre part une définition optimisée des catégories d'analyse fondées sur l'impulsion transverse des taus. La sensibilité de l'analyse est ainsi augmentée de plus de 30 % par rapport au dernier résultat public de CMS (2013) ce qui est équivalent à un accroissement de 3 à 4 fois la luminosité totale intégrée. Aucun excès d'événements n'est observé par rapport aux bruits de fonds prédits par le MS suite à l'interprétation modèle indépendante des limites supérieures sur la section efficace fois le rapport d'embranchement pour chacun des modes de production This thesis presents a search for Higgs bosons decaying into tau pairs in the context of the Standard Model (SM) and its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, using the data collected during the first years of operation at the LHC. After introducing the theoretical context relevant for the SM and MSSM Higgs bosons searches, the corresponding phenomenological aspects are discussed. The discovery of a scalar boson by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in 2012 is then presented. The design and performance of the CMS experiment are described as well as the identification and measurements of physical objects needed for the analysis. The accent is put on the tau lepton reconstruction including in particular a novel tau isolation that uses the lifetime information. We optimized this tool in terms of tau identification efficiency and fake tau rejection, particularly suited for boosted taus. A new technique for rejecting the electrons faking taus is also presented: a discriminator based on a multivariate analysis which considerably reduces the contamination from electrons faking taus while preserving the efficiency of identification is exposed. The SM and MSSM Higgs boson searches in the di-tau final state are presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4. 9 fb-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV and 19. 7 fb-1 at sqrt{s}=8 TeV recorded by CMS respectively in 2011 and 2012. The focus is put on the most sensitive semi-leptonic decay channels: $$H\to\tau\tau\to l\tau_{h}$$ where $$l$$ is either an electron or muon and $$\tau_{h}$$ stands for hadronic tau decays. After combining all the decay channels in SM Higgs boson to di-tau search and in particular using the new anti-electron discriminator, an excess of observed events with respect to the background-only hypothesis is found. The statistical significance of this excess corresponds to 3. 2 standard deviations at a mass of 125 GeV. The measured signal strength is compatible with the SM Higgs signal expectation. This result constitutes an evidence for a coupling between the scalar boson and leptons. Finally, a new strategy in the search for the MSSM Higgs bosons is presented in this thesis. It combines both the novel tau isolation technique and a new refined categorization based on the $$\tau_{h}$$ transverse momentum. With respect to the previous CMS public result (2013), the sensitivity of the analysis presented in this document is improved by more than 30%. This is equivalent to an increase of the total integrated luminosity by a factor 3 to 4. The interpretation of the model independent upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio of the production process shows no significant excess over the Standard Model backgrounds

L'obiettivo di questa tesi è studiare la fattibilità dello studio della produzione associata ttH del bosone di Higgs con due quark top nell'esperimento CMS, e valutare le funzionalità e le caratteristiche della prossima generazione di toolkit per l'analisi distribuita a CMS (CRAB versione 3) per effettuare tale analisi. Nel settore della fisica del quark top, la produzione ttH è particolarmente interessante, soprattutto perchè rappresenta l'unica opportunità di studiare direttamente il vertice t-H senza dover fare assunzioni riguardanti possibili contributi dalla fisica oltre il Modello Standard. La preparazione per questa analisi è cruciale in questo momento, prima dell'inizio del Run-2 dell'LHC nel 2015. Per essere preparati a tale studio, le implicazioni tecniche di effettuare un'analisi completa in un ambito di calcolo distribuito come la Grid non dovrebbero essere sottovalutate. Per questo motivo, vengono presentati e discussi un'analisi dello stesso strumento CRAB3 (disponibile adesso in versione di pre-produzione) e un confronto diretto di prestazioni con CRAB2. Saranno raccolti e documentati inoltre suggerimenti e consigli per un team di analisi che sarà eventualmente coinvolto in questo studio. Nel Capitolo 1 è introdotta la fisica delle alte energie a LHC nell'esperimento CMS. Il Capitolo 2 discute il modello di calcolo di CMS e il sistema di analisi distribuita della Grid. Nel Capitolo 3 viene brevemente presentata la fisica del quark top e del bosone di Higgs. Il Capitolo 4 è dedicato alla preparazione dell'analisi dal punto di vista degli strumenti della Grid (CRAB3 vs CRAB2). Nel capitolo 5 è presentato e discusso uno studio di fattibilità per un'analisi del canale ttH in termini di efficienza di selezione.

J’ai effectué ma thèse en physique des particules au laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet à l’École Polytechnique. J’ai participé à l’analyse des collisions proton-proton à 8 TeV produites par le Large Hadron Collider (LHC) et collectées par le détecteur CMS. La découverte du boson de Higgs a été un événement majeur pour la physique des hautes énergies car la masse des bosons vecteurs provient de leur interaction avec le champ de Higgs. Le couplage du boson de Higgs avec les leptons n’ayant pas encore été découvert, mon travail de thèse s’est articulé autour du canal de désintégration en pair de tau, car c’est le seul qui permet de mettre ce couplage en évidence. En effet, le boson de Higgs se désintègre beaucoup plus souvent en taus qu’en muons ou électrons. Cette analyse est difficile au niveau du déclenchement. En effet, l’important bruit de fond impose d’appliquer des seuils en énergie élevés. Un critère de déclenchement utilisant l’énergie transverse manquante pour abaisser le seuil sur les leptons a été introduit à la fin de la prise de données. Cette approche permet de récupérer 41% d’événements en plus. J’ai effectué une caractérisation exhaustive de ce déclenchement, et en particulier étudié les erreurs systématiques associées au niveau de l’analyse. Ce déclenchement a permis d’améliorer de 2% la limite d’exclusion dans le canal Higgs en tau-tau semi-leptonique. Au Run 2, l’énergie des collisions a été portée à 13 TeV et la luminosité va augmenter. Pour garantir un déclenchement efficace pour la physique, le premier niveau du système de déclenchement (L1) a été remplacé en se basant sur la technologie microTCA. Ce nouveau système permet un accès à des informations plus détaillées en provenance du détecteur. J’ai développé, pour ce nouveau système, un algorithme de sélection des taus basé sur un algorithme d’agrégation dynamique exploitant au maximum la granularité du calorimètre. J’ai mesuré ses performances en terme d’efficacité et de taux de déclenchement, et pour la première fois auprès d’un collisionneur hadronique, CMS disposera en 2016 d’un déclenchement efficace sur les taus au L1 avec un taux raisonnable. J’ai présenté ce travail sous forme de poster à la conférence ICHEP 2014. Dans la dernière partie de ma thèse, je me concentre sur la recherche du boson de Higgs se désintégrant en une paire de taus, en me concentrant sur le canal semi-leptonique et en introduisant pour la première fois la méthode des éléments de matrice (MEM) qui permet d’améliorer la sensibilité par rapport aux méthodes traditionnelles. Aucune analyse utilisant la MEM avec des taus n’a jamais été publiée. L’innovation dans ce travail consiste notamment dans le traitement de la désintégration des taus. La réponse du détecteur est quant-à-elle modélisée par des fonctions de transfert. Puis, j’ai du tenir compte des limitations numériques intervenants dans l’évaluation des intégrales multidimensionnelles à la base de cette méthode. Enfin, j’ai mesuré le gain en sensibilité apporté par la méthode sur les données à 8 TeV. Les performances dans le cadre de la recherche du boson de Higgs se désintégrant en une paire de tau de cette méthode pionnière sont très prometteuses, avec un rapport S/B amélioré d’un facteur 3, et constituent une référence pour l’analyse des futures données du Run 2 du LHC I performed my thesis work in Particle Physics at the Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet of the Ecole Polytechnique. I have participated to the analysis of the 8 TeV proton-proton collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and collected by the CMS experiment. The discovery of the Higgs boson has been a major breakthrough in particle physics as the mass of the vector bosons are explained through their interactions with the Higgs field. I worked on the newly discovered Higgs boson analysis. As its direct coupling to fermions remained to be exhibited, I focused on the search for the Higgs boson decaying in tau lepton pairs. The Higgs decay into a tau pair is the only channel allowing the couplings between the Higgs boson and the leptons to be measured. This is due to the large event rate expected in the Standard Model compared to the other leptonic decay modes. The Higgs boson decaying to tau lepton analysis is particularly challenging at the trigger level because the large background imposes high thresholds. I worked on a trigger that ran at the end of the data-taking using the missing transverse energy to lower the threshold on the single lepton. This approach allows the recovery of 41% of the signal events. Events with missing transverse momentum were selected in order to control the trigger rate. My personal contribution consisted in a thorough characterization of this trigger, including the measure of the associated uncertainty. The results of this approach led to an amelioration of 2% in the exclusion limits computed in the Higgs to taus semileptonic channel. For the Run 2, the center-of-mass energy of the LHC collisions has been increased to 13 TeV and the instantaneous luminosity will reach 2E34/cm2/s. To guarantee a successful and ambitious physics program under this intense environment, the CMS Trigger and Data acquisition system has been consolidated. In particular the Level 1 (L1, hardware based first level of the CMS trigger system) benefited from the recent microTCA technology allowing the calorimeter granularity to be better exploited with more advanced algorithms. Thanks to the enhanced granularity provided by the new system, an innovative dynamic clustering technique has been developed to obtain an optimized tau selection algorithm. I took the responsibility of developing a complete new tau trigger algorithm at L1 and measuring its performance. This original approach resulted in the first hardware tau lepton trigger efficient at a hadron collider with a sustainable rate. I had the opportunity to present a poster showing my work at the ICHEP-2014 conference, in Valencia and the proceedings were published in Nuclear Physics B afterwards. During my last year of PhD I focused on the Higgs decays into di-taus analysis, initiating the very first matrix element (ME) approach in this channel, starting with the most sensitive final state: the semileptonic decay mode. The aim is to increase the sensitivity of the analysis to the SM Higgs boson, with respect to the traditional methods. No ME-based analysis using tau leptons has ever been published. The novelty of my work is the treatment of the tau decay. In addition, I have derived a parameterization of the detector response through transfer functions. Finally, the numerical aspects related of multidimensional integrals computations have been tackled. I have fully characterized the method using simulated samples before applying it to the 8 TeV data. The performance in the context of the CMS Higgs into di-taus of this pioneering method are very promising, with a S/B ratio improved by a factor 3, and constitute a baseline for the analysis of the upcoming Run 2 data of the LHC
