Academic libraries around the world often have to justify high maintenance costs. High maintenance costs of university libraries are often justified by the belief that regular use of an academic library improves the grades of students. However, this is a difficult statement to support, therefore demonstrating the link between library use and student outcomes is critical to ensuring that library investment continues.
Questionnaires and interviews were conducted and the findings were analysed to derive users’ perceptions. The findings revealed interesting results regarding how users make use of the library and how users feel the library improves their personal performance. Overall, the perception of all three groups of the academic libraries within Kuwait is positive, however many users are dissatisfied with some academic library services. Students answered positively regarding their grades and use of the academic library. Academics and administrators were generally positive and offered an experienced insight into the quality of the library. This study offers the first perception based results in Kuwait. The inclusion of administrators’ perceptions is also novel in terms of the Gulf States. A refined model was designed based on the overall findings within the study. This model can be applied to any academic library, regardless of size or collection type.
Based on findings, the researcher recommends taking the following points into consideration in order to improve library services and facilities for all users. Improvements could be made in the structure of library training courses and academic libraries should be providing flexible spaces for individuals and group study as well as social activities.

Some classes of Internet users have specific information needs and specialized information-seeking behaviors. For example, educators who are designing a course might create a syllabus, recommend books, create lecture slides, and use tools as lecture aid. All of these resources are available online, but are scattered across a large number of websites. Collecting, linking, and presenting the disparate items related to a given course topic within a digital library will help educators in finding quality educational material.
Content quality is important for users. The results of popular search engines typically fail to reflect community input regarding quality of the content. To disseminate information related to the quality of available resources, users need a common place to meet and share their experiences. Online communities can support knowledge-sharing practices (e.g., reviews, ratings).
We focus on finding the information needs of educators and helping users to identify potentially useful resources within an educational digital library. This research builds upon the existing 5S digital library (DL) framework. We extend core DL services (e.g., index, search, browse) to include information from latent user groups. We propose a formal definition for the next generation of educational digital libraries. We extend one aspect of this definition to study methods that incorporate collective knowledge within the DL framework. We introduce the concept of deduced social network (DSN) - a network that uses navigation history to deduce connections that are prevalent in an educational digital library. Knowledge gained from the DSN can be used to tailor DL services so as to guide users through the vast information space of educational digital libraries. As our testing ground, we use the AlgoViz and Ensemble portals, both of which have large collections of educational resources and seek to support online communities. We developed two applications, ranking of search results and recommendation, that use the information derived from DSNs. The revised ranking system incorporates social trends into the system, whereas the recommendation system assigns users to a specific group for content recommendation. Both applications show enhanced performance when DSN-derived information is incorporated.<br>Ph. D.

automatically generate visual thesauri of large collections
of geo-spatial media using fuzzy, unsupervised
machine-learning techniques.

This paper examines stereographic images as scholarly resources, and begins with a brief history of the stereograph. A discussion and review of the literature related to the stereograph as well as the preservation of photographic objects follows the introduction. In addition to the literature review, collections of stereographs at four repositories were evaluated for usability: The Keystone-Mast Archive at the University of California, Riverside; The Eliot Elisofon Archive at the Smithsonian Institution; the George Eastman House; the Library of Congress. The paper ends with suggestions for future work with the stereograph, in order to facilitate access and use by researchers.

The amount of digital content produced at academic research institutions is large, and libraries and archives at these institutions have a responsibility to bring this digital material under curatorial control in order to manage and preserve it over time. But this is a daunting task with few proven models, requiring new technology, policies, procedures, core staff competencies, and cost models. The MIT Libraries are working with the DSpace(TM) open-source digital repository platform to explore the problem of capturing research and teaching material in any digital format and preserving it over time. By collaborating on this problem with other research institutions using the DSpace platform in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and other parts of the world, as well as with other important efforts in the digital preservation arena, we are beginning to see ways of managing arbitrary digital content that might make digital preservation an achievable goal.<br>Page image PDF

<p>My master’s thesis is a study of acquisition of photographies during 1958-2008. The questions I proceed from is what patterns lies behind the Royal library's acquisition of photography and how the process of acquisition looks like. The theoretical base which I lean on consists partly of a problematization of the process of cultural heritage and partly of organizational theory. The problematization of the process of cultural heritage is my foundation of this essay. My starting point is that the Royal library make a choice when they collect material to be a cultural heritage and the memories gathered for future generations. I used organizational theory to find answer to how the collection been gathered through studies of the organizations interaction with the members of the organization, the process in the organizations, like goals and policy, and the organizations interaction with other organizations. I used case-study as my method. I interviewed most of the chiefs who were in charge of the unit during the period 1958-2008 and worked through journals of acquisition, annual reports, letters of regulation, exchange of letters and other in-house material. My results are that the acquisition of photography follows the Royal library's acquisition of picture at large. The culture heritage that the library collect for future generations is based on the content rather than the form of the material. This aspect was founded early in the creation of the library and has kept its status as a guiding line ever since. The main categories of collection are based on the motif of the photography and are the following; portrait, topography and events. Events is a new category but a sequel of an old category, historical wall chart. The material that the photographies are made of has varied but the majority have been photographies on paper. Gifts and purchases have been the most common ways for the library to collect photographies. Gifts have been treated differently through the years, from the beginning all gifts were received and the library asked actively for special gifts, later the library decided whether or not they should accept a gift. The policy from both the library and from the government have been vague, but lately they have been working on a new and more detailed policy from 2008.</p>

Many libraries maintain multi-media digital collections that could be accessed on mobile devices. Mobile devices, however, offer unique display and technical challenges that need to be addressed. The benefits of mobile access to library collections include the promise of increased use and an enhanced user experience. In this article we provide a detailed discussion of the issues related to mobile delivery of digital media, including a literature review, an overview of significant technical issues, and three case studies.

The Web, containing a large amount of useful information and resources, is expanding rapidly. Collecting domain-specific documents/information from the Web is one of the most important methods to build digital libraries for the scientific community. Focused Crawlers can selectively retrieve Web documents relevant to a specific domain to build collections for domain-specific search engines or digital libraries. Traditional focused crawlers normally adopting the simple Vector Space Model and local Web search algorithms typically only find relevant Web pages with low precision. Recall also often is low, since they explore a limited sub-graph of the Web that surrounds the starting URL set, and will ignore relevant pages outside this sub-graph. In this work, we investigated how to apply an inductive machine learning algorithm and meta-search technique, to the traditional focused crawling process, to overcome the above mentioned problems and to improve performance. We proposed a novel hybrid focused crawling framework based on Genetic Programming (GP) and meta-search. We showed that our novel hybrid framework can be applied to traditional focused crawlers to accurately find more relevant Web documents for the use of digital libraries and domain-specific search engines. The framework is validated through experiments performed on test documents from the Open Directory Project. Our studies have shown that improvement can be achieved relative to the traditional focused crawler if genetic programming and meta-search methods are introduced into the focused crawling process.<br>Ph. Since 2005, convergence of museums, libraries and archives has emerged as a prominent trend in both the international and Australia collection sectors, made manifest through the development of digital platforms that allow integrated access to diverse collection databases, as well as collaborations and mergers of bricks-and-mortar cultural institutions to incorporate various types of collections and professional disciplines. The convergence phenomenon has led to significant investments in technology and infrastructure, provoking considerable scholarly and professional discourse across collecting domains. Yet, the existence of only a handful of empirical studies reflects a nascent field of study where the majority of research is characterised by inventory-style attempts to quantify and classify types of collaborative projects. This thesis extends current research by examining convergence through a dual commitment to both theory and fieldwork. Focussing on the interpretation of museum collections within converged institutions, I combine conceptual analysis of the epistemological implications of convergence with five detailed case studies of converged organisations in Australia and New Zealand. In a museological context, the research explores ways in which the integration of collecting institutions influences understandings of objects through its impact on museum practices. The findings suggest that convergence not only produces a new institutional framework for museum practice, but also that the integration of collecting institutions has the potential to reshape fundamental understandings of identity, place, heritage and culture.

This study examines the impact of the advent of e-books on collection development and acquisition in Irish university libraries. Semi-structured interviews with informants working as acquisition librarians, sub-librarians and collection management librarians were conducted to investigate their experiences and perceptions of e-book acquisition and collection management. This study provides a look at these issues from the perspective of diffusion of innovation and change management theories. The study found that librarians face challenges in setting new collection development policies, acquiring new skills and adjusting to new workflows and extra workloads. The study also revealed that the most fundamental problems librarians face in acquiring e-books are the low availability of e-textbooks, the heavy VAT on e-books as well as a lack of “one-stop-shop” opportunities. There were also worries expressed about the future of academic libraries in the e-book acquisition process. Until recent years, archivists have been reluctant to consider photographs as being archival in nature. The evidential value possessed by some photographs was ignored and archivists also failed to see where the informational value of a photographic image could be enhanced when viewed within the context in which it was created. Instead, archivists preferred to arrange and describe photographs as discrete items. For assistance in this endeavor, archivists turned to members of the library profession. Librarians, for their part, found that photographs were not amenable to standard bibliographic formats or classification schemes devised for printed monographs. The result was the creation by members of both the library and archival professions of numerous and often idiosyncratic methods for the physical and intellectual control of photographs.
The volume of photographic images acquired by libraries and archival repositories now makes it virtually impossible to continue dealing with photographs as discrete items. The research needs and methodologies of users have also changed; photographs are increasingly being sought as historical documents in their own right and not just as illustrations to accompany the written word. In response to these two factors, librarians began organizing and describing photographs as "lots" and archivists moved slowly toward the arrangement and description of photographs as archival fonds. This evolution, far from complete with regard to photographs, resembles an earlier evolution affecting the arrangement and description of textual archives, particularly manuscripts.
Today archivists in many Western countries are seeking to establish standard formats in the description of archival materials. This goal has become particularly urgent in the face of computer technology and the desire to form automated archival networks. It remains to be seen whether the final standards adopted in Canada, for instance, will encompass photographs or whether photographs will retain a "special" status. Without question, photographs have and will continue to present members of the library and archival professions with problems In arrangement and description. This is demonstrated in the body of this thesis through a survey of the professional literature and through field work undertaken in six libraries and archival repositories in the Vancouver area and in Victoria, British Columbia. This study examines the preservation practices of academic law libraries and argues that the survey results illustrate the growing gap between current preservation practices and new technology. The introduction to the study discusses challenges for libraries and cultural institutions in the digital age. In the second section, the paper analyzes U.S. copyright law and the effect of recent amendments on library preservation activities. The third section reports the results of a preservation practices survey. In the fourth section, the paper explores options for future law library preservation including institutional repositories and collaborative preservation efforts. The paper concludes that a new approach to scholarship and preservation is necessary to ensure that future generations have access to historically important legal literature.

Traditionally, collections of texts are digitally represented as a set of documents containing the text along with some kind of markup to define extra information, like metadata, annotations, etc. We propose a different approach that models the textual information in a dual way: as a sequence of characters, as well as a composition of a particular kind of entities, called textual objects. With such objects it is possible to represent portions of text organized in different, potentially overlapping, hierarchies, together with complex annotations. Manuzio is a statically typechecked language to define schemas of such textual objects and to write complex queries and applications on them through a set of powerful operators. In the thesis we describe our textual model, the main features of the language ares specified, and, finally, we introduce a sketch of a system to manage persistent collections of texts and execute programs written in Manuzio.<br>Tradizionalmente una collezione di testi è reppresentata in formato digitale da un insieme di documenti che contengono, oltre al testo stesso, qualche tipo di marcatura per veicolare informazioni extra-textuali, come metadati, annotazioni, etc. In questa tesi si propone un approccio differente, che modella l'informazione testuale in maniera duplice: sia come una sequenza di caratteri, sia come una composizione di particolari entità, chiamate oggetti testuali. Tramite questi oggetti è possibile rappresentare porzioni di testo, organizzate in gerarchie potenzialmente sovrapposte, complementate da annotazioni strutturate. Manuzio è un linguaggio di programmazione staticamente tipato che permette di deinire schemi di oggetti testuali e di scrivere interrogazioni e algoritmi di analisi testuali attraverso un insieme di operatori potenti. In questa tesi viene descritto il modello testuale, vengono specificate principali caratteristiche del linguaggio Manuzio, e viene introdotta la bozza di un sistema completo capace di archiviare collezioni di testi in maniera persistente e di eseguire programmi Manuzio.

This work examines the country house libraries of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Hitherto this is an area largely overlooked both in terms of librarianship and social history. The first part of the thesis examines the historical development of book collections within country houses. In addition to pure historical bibliography it also examines the two essentials behind their development, the people and the houses. The work goes on to focus on the current situation within the United Kingdom. By means of a near comprehensive survey of extant collections, the current picture is identified in terms of the types of material, the collectors, the condition of material, the methods of preservation and, significantly, the willingness of owners to concede access. All of these issues are fundamental components in the study and have been investigated further in order to enable the attainment of the final objective, the creation of a national heritage policy for these collections. This final element focuses particularly on methods of preservation, the potential for funding and the question of access to collections. The policy relies on evidence acquired at the earlier stages of the research as well as that acquired during a second survey dealing predominantly with preservation, access and funding. This is coupled with the identification of current best practice within the library preservation field. Extensive use has been made of contact with owners and administrators of collections by means of the surveys, interviews, observational visits and correspondence. In addition, heritage organisations and structures within the United Kingdom have been analysed, with emphasis on those with direct impact on the country house. This research is fundamentally about two things: the historical development of collections and the approaches likely to ensure their survival.

In scientific applications, physical quantities and units of measurement are used regularly. If the inherent incompatibility between these different units is not handled properly it can lead to major, and sometimes catastrophic, problems. Although the risk of a miscalculation is high and the cost equally so, almost no programming languages has support for physical quantities. Instead developers often rely on external libraries to help them spot these mistakes or prevent them all together. There are several hundred of these types of libraries, spread across multiple sites and with no simple way to get an overview. No one has summarized what has and has not been achieved so far in the area leading to many developers trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’ instead of building on what has already been done. This shows a clear need for this type of research. Employing a systematic approach to look through and analyze all available physical quantity libraries, the search results were condensed into 82 libraries which are presented in this thesis. These are the most comprehensive and well-developed, open-source libraries, chosen from approximately 3700 search results across seven repository hosting sites. In this group, 30 different programming languages are represented. The goal is for the results of this thesis to contribute to a shared foundation on which to build future libraries as well as provide an easy way of spreading knowledge about which libraries exist in the area, thus making it easier for more people to use them.

<p> Captive animals demonstrate a number of differences compared to their wild counterparts, with the suite of some of the most common, and arguably deleterious, referred to collectively as domestication syndrome. Scholars have proposed a number of different variables and mechanisms for the changes, with captive diet being one of the prominent explanations. This thesis explores the effects of captivity on the skulls and mandibles of Malagasy lemurs (predominantly ring-tailed lemurs <i>Lemur catta</i>) using relative linear measurements and selected ratios, gathered from natural history museum collections. I predicted that captive and wild individuals would show differences in cranial measurements related to mastication, which would be driven by their different diets and the exploitation of the kily fruit <i>Tamarindus indica</i> (H1<sub> A</sub>). I also predicted that wild individuals would show more overall variation due to consumption of broader, less consistent diets (H1<sub>B</sub>). Finally, I predicted that a multivariate model would be able to properly predict captivity status in <i>Lemur catta</i> using linear variables. Captive <i> Lemur catta</i> showed significantly (p = 0.0126) shorter relative post-palatal lengths than their wild counterparts, supporting H1<sub>A</sub>, and significantly (p = 0.0374) smaller variance in the inio-orbital (post-facial) region, supporting H1<sub>B</sub>. However, captive individuals showed significantly (p = 0.0390) greater variance in anterior flexion of the angular process, which refuted H1<sub>B</sub>. A step-wise discriminant function model was able to properly predict captivity status in a sample of n = 18 <i>Lemur catta</i> using four linear variables (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.9336). Descriptive statistics across sex and other lemur species revealed differences that should be noted by scholars, specifically significantly (p = 0.0250) longer alveo-orbital AO (pre-facial) regions in male <i>Lemur catta</i>. The findings of this thesis, including its critique of physical and intellectual conservation of data, should be taken into account by museum professionals, animal husbandry personnel, and morphologists alike, and all measurements and findings shall be published on open access servers.</p><p>

The purpose of this project was to investigate 8-month-old infants' representation and tracking of objects in occlusion events. Recent research has shown that young infants are able to reason about various aspects of physical objects' behavior. This project further explores this ability and delineates some limits to it. Specifically, the first set of studies (1A-1F) investigated whether infants' apply spatiotemporal continuity to collections of objects as they do to single objects. Because to adults a collection can be viewed as multiple objects as well as a non-object individual, infants' tracking of a collection may thus inform us not only about their representation of objects but also about their representation of non-object entities. The second set of studies (2A and 2B) focused on infants' detection of spatiotemporal discontinuity in object behavior in different situations: The disappearance versus appearance situation. These two sets of studies revealed two limitations in infants' application of spatiotemporal continuity: While 8-month-old infants are able to detect the discontinuous disappearance of single objects, they (a) do not readily detect the discontinuous disappearance of a collection but succeed only in certain circumstances, and (b) do not detect the discontinuous appearance of single objects. These limitations have important implications for infants' knowledge of and tracking systems for objects. Finally, some general issues arising from the current project are discussed.

E-book integration into library collections is made difficult by complicated purchasing and lending models and ever-changing technological requirements. Additionally, it is unclear what exactly library users want from their e-books. In this study, research into the obstacles facing the growth of academic library e-book collections was carried out by reviewing the literature on the topic, found in print and electronic reference works, monographs and journals, and on blogs and websites. Secondly, an investigation was conducted into patrons’ attitudes to e-books, their current use of e-books, and their expectations of e-books in their libraries, to examine the current and potential use of e-books at South African university libraries. The investigation employed both qualitative and quantitative research methods to discover library users’ attitudes towards e-books. Surveys were run on the campuses of the four universities in the Western Cape of South Africa. A sample of potential participants, totalling 1,539 staff members and 45,849 students, was invited to participate in the survey via email or a website link. Data was collected by means of a self-administered, online questionnaire distributed using SurveyMonkey software.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a secure communication protocol between a client and a server over a network. The TLS protocol provides the two endpoints with confidentiality through symmetric encryption, endpoint authentication using public-key cryptography, and data integrity using a MAC. However, studies show that security vulnerabilities within TLS connections are often caused by developers misusing TLS library APIs. We measure the usability of four TLS libraries by performing a developer user study. Participants were given code that connects to google.com through HTTP, and tasked with using a TLS library to change the code so that it connects securely to Google through HTTPS. Our results help show what makes a library usable and what problems arise for developers using these TLS libraries. We found that the main way to ensure a TLS library is usable is to focus on having clear documentation. From our results, we provide suggestions on how to create usable documentation.

In the 1990s, the MLA sector – archives, libraries, museums – was defined as a comprehensive sector. One of the reasons for this was the belief that the digitizing of institutional collections and catalogues would provide a seamless access to the cultural heritage for the general public. No one would any longer need to know in which institution a certain object was kept; everything would be available on the Internet. The questions in this dissertation depart from the expectations in the late 1900s aimed at the available systems in the MLA sector for the management and storage of information and at knowledge maintained in such systems. My point of departure is the idea that access to collections in the MLA sector – real or digital – is made possible through the catalogues. It is in the catalogues that the sector orders data and preserves knowledge collected about the objects. My most important conclusions deal with the management and production of knowledge in the sector. The data systems generally used in the MLA sector lack the indulgence needed to accommodate inherent variability of information. Systems must be based on exact sorting, uniform terminology and classification without deviations in spelling or interpretation. Furthermore, international projects and systems presuppose distinct translations between national terminologies and international classification systems to work for information retrievals. This is not the case with the museum systems here investigated, in opposition to, primarily, the libraries. The museum systems are characterised as distinctive instead of following uniformity principles and national or international taxonomies. An important conclusion about knowledge processing and knowledge production in the MLA sector is that the value of compiling digitalised data from many museums is limited. It is not possible to realize the political goal other than at a superficial level. The conclusions in a comparison between the three professional groups are that in the beginning of the 21th century an extensive part of the antiquarians confirm a thought style, according to Ludwik Fleck, which has another direction than that of archivists and librarians. Throughout the 20th century or in the last decades of the 20th century the two latter groups professionalised their roles both through changes in education and through new professional requirements which led to positions and attitudes in their work other than what happened in the museum sector. Museums are mainly research institutions with members of staff who in many respects lack a focus on increased accessibility of collections. Challenges formulated for museums of cultural history by the cultural politics of the 1970s have not been answered with great flexibility. The investigation in this dissertation demonstrates that archives, libraries and museums in many respects continue to pursue activities according to a thought style which was formed during the first half of the 20th century. Their positions in society, their administrational practice and expectations from the general public constitute stabilising and preserving factors. The MLA sector is not as comprehensive as the policy makers want to believe.

During the past thirty years Canadian literature has developed at a remarkable rate, with the result that many Canadian writers now enjoy national and international recognition. The personal papers of these writers have undergone a corresponding increase in their research and monetary value. Literary papers have therefore become highly attractive to archival repositories and libraries, many of which compete to acquire these papers through sales or donations. Open-market competition may be advantageous to authors because it allows them to sell their papers to the highest bidder, but it is harmful to archivists because it creates animosity within the archival community, inflates prices and causes collections to be split. This clash of interests between authors and archivists, and among archivists themselves, must be resolved if literary papers are to be preserved and administered properly.
A questionnaire was sent to 29 Canadian repositories to determine the ways in which archivists deal with the complex issues associated with acquiring literary papers: acquisition policies; acquisition budgets; the suitability of certain types of institutions to acquire literary papers; copyright/literary rights; tax credits; monetary appraisal; and automation. Results from this survey indicate that an increasing number of archival institutions now recognize the need for developing systematic collections policies in order to reduce competition and encourage cooperation among archivists. However, the majority of institutions in Canada still do not have any formal written policies for acquiring literary papers and have no plans to develop such policies in the near future. It will be some time, therefore, before a complete cooperative network among archivists in Canada becomes a reality.
Diverse types of institutions acquire literary papers; university archives and special collections, provincial archives, the National Archives and National Library of Canada, and smaller thematic archives are all involved in this type of acquisition. The survey sought respondents' opinions on this question: can or should the acquisition of literary papers be limited to certain types of institutions? Judging from the responses, the answer is a qualified no. Universities are a logical repository for authors' papers because literary research is largely an academic activity, but it is not possible to prevent other types of institutions from acquiring in this area through laws or regulations. Donor preferences play a critical role; ultimately it is the author or his executors who have the last word on where the author's papers are deposited.
The author-archivist relationship lies at the heart of this issue. The onus is on the archivist to educate authors on the nature and function of archives and the legal implications of acquisition. Archivists can also educate themselves regarding authors' economic concerns and the literary activities which produce their records; such understanding will help to resolve the conflicts between authors and archivists and improve acquisition negotiations. Schema mapping is a challenging problem. It has come to the fore in recent years; there are important applications like database schema integration and, more recently, digital library (DL) merging of heterogeneous data. With Schema Mapper we demonstrate a semi-automatic tool for schema integration that combines a novel visual interface with an algorithm-based recommendation engine.
We use ETANA-DL, a digital library developed to support integration of data from Near Eastern archaeology sites, as we explore integrating new collections. Schemas are visualized as hyperbolic trees, thus allowing more schema nodes to be displayed at one time. Matches to selections are recommended to the user, which makes the mapping operation easier and faster. Once the user has completed the mapping operation, a wrapper (XSLT Style Sheet) is created automatically with the mappings which can be applied to transform source XML files into target XML files.
Schema Mapper allows editing the target schema as part of the process of incremental enrichment of the target schema. This involves operations like adding a node as a child, renaming a node, and deleting a node. The changes to the target schema also can be logged to disk.
Schema Mapper has been applied to integrate the Megiddo Collection successfully into the ETANA-DL Union Catalog. It also has been applied for data-level mapping, to ensure consistency of data representation to the users who access the information through services provided by the DL. Formative evaluation and a preliminary comparison with MapForce suggest that Schema Mapper may be usefully employed for schema mapping.<br>Master of Science

ordering, cataloguing and preserving special music collections for research, the
Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS) was established in 2005 as a research
project at the University of Stellenbosch. Music research in South Africa is often
impeded by inaccessibility of materials, staff shortages at archives and libraries,
financial constraints and time-consuming ordering and cataloguing processes.
Additionally there is, locally, restricted knowledge of the existence, location and
status of relevant primary sources. Accessibility clearly depends on knowing of the
existence of materials, as well as the extent to which collections have been ordered
and catalogued.
An overview of repositories such as the Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum
and Navorsingsentrum (NALN), the now defunct National Documentation Centre for
Music and the International Library of African Music (ILAM) paints a troubling
picture of archival neglect and disintegration. Apart from ILAM, which has a very
specific collecting and research focus, this trend was one that ostensibly started in the
1980s and is still continuing. It could be ascribed to a lack of planning and forward
thinking under the previous political dispensation, aggravated by policies of
transformation and restructuring in the current one.
Existing sources supporting research on primary materials are dated and not
discipline-specific. Thus this study aims to address issues of inaccessibility of primary
music materials by creating a comprehensive and ongoing national electronic database
of special music collections in South Africa. It is hoped that this will help to alert
researchers to the existence and status of special music collections housed at various
levels of South African academic and civil society.

A multidisciplinary approach is utilized to assess the organization and use of ancient and medieval Near Eastern textual deposits. An elaborate survey of the published material in ancient Near Eastern studies and library and archival studies indicates a general and pervasive insensitivity to and misuse of key terminological constructs. The indistinct portrayal of the nature of ancient libraries and archives is identified as of particular concern; as well as a widespread disregard for the recognition of textual collections older than the famed Library of Alexandria. This dissertation endeavours to indicate the presence of distinct textual collective units in the ancient Near Eastern context on equal footing with their much later counterparts and more broadly defined than the traditional library and archive, to include entities such as the geniza, building and foundation deposits, and so forth. Furthermore, the ancient temple library, as a restricted and well-regulated collective entity, is suggested as representative of literary standardization in the Near East, and the canonization process of the Hebrew Bible, in particular. Ancient archives are attested as equally prevalent textual units, clearly distinguishable from adjunct textual deposits, often loosely, but incorrectly, termed "archives" in modern scholarly discourse. In conclusion, this dissertation reconsiders the status of the two traditionally most valued ancient textual entities, the Library of Assurbanipal and the Library of Alexandria, and concludes that these entities are atypical examples of ancient textual collections. As closest claimants to the improbable and often religiously imbued ideal of universal collection of information, these libraries erroneously became the impossible standards by which all ancient collections were measured and found wanting. This research examines the presence of and reasons for local studies resources in the libraries and learning centres of further and higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. The study’s aims were to investigate the content and scope of local collections in academic libraries, to examine the impact these collections have on teaching, learning and research within the institutions, and to compile an inventory of local resources in college and university libraries. Using an approach combining basic- and applied research, the study represents the most comprehensive investigation of local resources in academic libraries so far. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected by way of two survey questionnaires, plus observational visits to a small number of libraries, learning centres and Special Collections departments. In addition, interviews were conducted with local studies’ experts, collection managers, educators, and students. Secondary literature focusing principally on both local studies and academic libraries was also consulted. The study found that, while the literature, as well as ‘tradition’ tends to equate local studies and its resources with the public library, local material could be found in a majority of respondents’ collections. It is suggested that the relative neglect afforded local collections outside of the public sector is unwarranted, particularly when considering the potential for wider access to material that a more inclusive approach to local resources might allow for. The research also noted that the term ‘local’, as defined by the geographical scope of the material held in different collections, is open to significantly diverse interpretations, ranging from the college or university campus itself to one or more constituent countries (for instance, England and Wales). While some authors have addressed the complexity of defining ‘local’, the issue remains largely underexamined in the literature, where the term can frequently be based on little more than a tacit understanding of what ‘local’ means in any given context.

The Special Collections of the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham hold seven early Qur’ānic pieces on parchment and papyrus dating from the seventh century. Alphonse Mingana purchased them from the antiquarian dealer von Scherling in 1936. Through investigation of the private correspondence of Mingana and archival documents, this research provides new information about the origin and history of the fragments, whose reception has been influenced by the European cultural context at the beginning of the twentieth century, in contrast with the public image proposed in catalogues, official documents and previous studies. Furthermore, this research is an attempt to initiate an alternative perspective in analysing and editing the physical objects and texts of early Qur’ānic manuscripts by applying digital philology, thus using XML-encoded expressions to transcribe all of the richness of manuscripts in reconstructing the history of their transmission. This perspective interprets the process of the making of the manuscript text and the context in which the manuscript was written, thus editing its mobile and multi-layered text, differently from previous examples of the edition of early Qur’ānic manuscripts.

Throughout Victoria's reign, Lord Lindsay and his son Ludovic, respectively twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth earls of Crawford, created one of the largest private libraries ever assembled in Britain. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana included some six thousand manuscripts, which Ludovic sold to Enriqueta Rylands in 1901 for £155,000. The principal problematic that I address in this thesis is: Why did the earls of Crawford invest vast amounts of financial and cultural capital in this endeavour? In other words, what factors - both structural and specific - led to the formation of the library, what purposes did it serve, and what roles did its manuscript components in particular perform? Other questions include: How - and how successfully - did Lindsay and Ludovic maintain physical and intellectual control over the rapidly growing library? How did they position themselves within networks of connoisseurship and collecting in Victorian Britain? How was the formation of the Oriental manuscript collections connected with Lindsay's interest in racial classification and with wider racial discourses? And how did the library reflect and reinforce Lindsay's identity as a gentleman-scholar? Previous studies of this and other manuscript collections have adhered to an antiquarian, bio-bibliographical model, focusing on the detailed matter and mechanisms of collecting, rather than exploring the socio-cultural and epistemological contexts of their development. This thesis, by contrast, constitutes the first extended application of cultural theory to a manuscript collection, or indeed to any private library, in the nineteenth century. I combine close archival work with Bourdieu's concepts of field, capital and habitus to reveal the complex structuration and signification of the library, and to investigate the imbrication between the earls' personal agency and wider forces operating upon the library. My examination of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana has uncovered several key issues and themes hitherto unexplored in this or any other major private library of the nineteenth century. First, I argue that the reasons for the library's development reside principally in various forms of classification, which preoccupied Lindsay and reflected wider societal trends and taxonomies: the classification of libraries and the ramification of knowledge; Lindsay's deployment of the library to corroborate his and his family's social and cultural distinction (i.e. social classification); and an interest in racial classification, which reflected Orientalist discourses associated with imperialism. Secondly, while the dispersal of aristocratic collections in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is a familiar trope, this study is the first to contextualize the decline of a private library within the struggle between the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Finally, this is the first examination of the impact of professionalization upon private as opposed to public libraries, revealing the tensions between amateur traditions and growing professionalism and specialization in the nineteenth century. I thus 'read' through the library some of the wider socio-economic and cultural issues operating in Victorian Britain and its empire.

Há lugar à análise das cartotecas digitais em linha existentes, pertencentes a instituições portuguesas que produzem cartografia, assim como das pertencentes a bibliotecas portuguesas. Estudam-se todas as colecções digitais em linha, englobando documentos não cartográficos, pertencentes a bibliotecas portuguesas e, dentro dessas, destacam-se quais as pertencentes a bibliotecas públicas. Após esse estudo, e o confronto entre a realidade portuguesa, onde as colecções digitais nas bibliotecas públicas são quase inexistentes, e a realidade de outros países onde as colecções documentais em linha são comuns, são propostas algumas orientações para que se possam construir colecções digitais nas bibliotecas públicas portuguesas, partindo de uma investigação acção feita na Biblioteca Pública de Évora no contexto desta dissertação. Tomam-se como modelo na construção das colecções digitais, assim como das plataformas multimédia que as apresentam aos utilizadores, algumas colecções cartográficas disponíveis na Web e respectivas formas de visualização. Overview of on-line digital cartographic collections, belonging to Portuguese institutions that produce cartography, as well as on-line digital cartographic collections belonging to Portuguese libraries. Study of all digital online collections, of all sorts of documents, which belong to Portuguese libraries, focusing mainly on the ones that were made by public libraries. Afterwards, comparing the Portuguese reality, where digital on-line collections that belong to public libraries are almost inexistent, and the reality of other countries where those collections are common in public libraries, some guidelines are proposed to help Portuguese public libraries build such on-line digital collections. To make such guidelines, this investigation's starting point is an investigation-action project developed during the making of this dissertation in Évora Public Library. The role models for the construction of the digital collections are some of the cartography collections available on the Web. This work, by causing the dialogue between the private library and the
university library, to propose an acquisition and management of private
collections policy and a model contract for the donation of private collections to
the libraries of the Federal University of Santa Maria. To do so, is used the
analytical-comparative methodology to explain the concept of special
collections, exemplifying some universities that guard private collections in their
various characterizations, and types of management applied to these
collections. It discusses the importance of the development of collections in
university libraries, with emphasis on the evaluation and selection of books
received in donations. Debate the institutionalization of private bibliographic
collections in universities seeking to list the various issues that need to be
studied in order to be able to effect such a process. As a result of the analysis, it
proposes a policy of evaluation and selection of bibliographical works received
in donation, listing criteria that guide the reception and technical treatment of
the material. Also, it guides the importance of the analysis of the biography of
the donor when a whole particular collection is received. Due to the relevance of
this study and the complexity of the incorporation of private libraries in university
libraries, it was necessary to prepare a proposal of donation contract so that the
Federal University of Santa Maria can receive private collections that deals with
property and rights issues and make it public for research.<br>Este trabalho, ao provocar o diálogo entre a biblioteca particular e a biblioteca
universitária, propõe uma política de aquisição e gerenciamento de coleções
particulares. Propõe um modelo de contrato de doação de acervos particulares
às bibliotecas da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Para tanto, na
fundamentação da construção do produto, utiliza-se a metodologia analíticocomparativa
para explicar o conceito de coleções especiais, exemplificando
algumas universidades que fazem a guarda de acervos particulares em suas
várias caracterizações, e tipos de gestão aplicados a estas coleções. Discute a
importância do desenvolvimento de coleções em bibliotecas universitárias com
ênfase na avaliação e seleção de livros recebidos em doação. Debate a
institucionalização de acervos bibliográficos privados em universidades

se possa efetivar tal processo. Como resultado da análise, propõe uma política
de avaliação e seleção de obras bibliográficas recebidas em doação, listando
critérios que orientam as formas para o recebimento e o tratamento técnico do
material. Ainda, orienta sobre a importância da análise da biografia do doador
quando se tratar de uma coleção particular recebida no todo. Devido a
pertinência deste estudo e a complexidade da incorporação de bibliotecas
particulares em bibliotecas universitárias, fez-se necessário elaborar uma
proposta de contrato de doação para que a Universidade Federal de Santa
Maria possa receber acervo particular que atenda às questões de propriedade
e direitos de uso para tornar públicas as obras para a pesquisa.

The purpose of this thesis is to compare international ideal competencies for Special Collections librarianship to the possibility to acquire these competencies as a student of library education or as a professional librarian with the care of special collections in a public library in Sweden today. The questions posed are: How are international ideal competencies concerning special collections looked upon in Swedish public libraries? How can students or professional librarians today acquire competences necessary for the work at hand in special collections? Suggested in this thesis is to emphasize the importance of understanding that handling special collections demands other skills and belongs to other practices than ordinary work in a public library. The major discrepancy with international ideal competencies consists in the lack of ways for education in the field of special collections for both students and professional librarians in Sweden today.

This study evaluates monograph acquisition decisions at an academic health sciences library using circulation and acquisitions data. The goal was to provide insight regarding how to allocate library funds to support research and education in disciplines of interest to the library user base. Data analysis revealed that allocations in 13 subject areas should be reviewed as the cost of circulation was greater than the average cost of circulation of the sample and the average cost of monographs was higher in these subject areas than the average cost of monographs in the sample. In contrast, 13 subjects returned cost of circulation rates lower than the average cost of circulation of the sample. These subjects merit stable budget allocation or increased allocation depending upon collection needs. Overall, this study found that this library is allocating a majority of resources to subjects with above average rates of use.

The concepts of units and units of measurement (UoM) are used in scientific and mathematicalapplications to encode variables and their types with units. There are many UoMlibraries, as identified by previous research, that exist that can handle and prevent unit errorsand failures that can arise if units are not handled properly, otherwise, the consequences ofnot using UoM libraries may have possibly disastrous implications. Previous research hascategorised thousands of UoM libraries, an indication that the ’wheel is being reinvented’time and time again instead of building on what was already done, indicating that thereexists a lack of adoption of these UoM libraries. It is therefore important to understand thescale of the lack of adoption and why that is the case. An exploratory-DSR style researchwas employed and developers and scientists were surveyed and interviewed to inquire whythis is the case, with results ranging from unawareness of these UoM libraries, to specificperformance concerns and even tradition and sticking to what already works. Towards theend, the thesis suggests possible solutions to relieving the lack of adoption of these UoMlibraries as recommendation for further UoM solutions, with recommendations rangingfrom including UoM libraries in standard libraries of programming languages to reducingthe complexity and verbosity of UoM solutions.

A partir do pressuposto de que bibliotecas, arquivos, centros de documentação, museus e instituições afins são entidades que compartilham, dentre outros, o objetivo de acumular e/ou colecionar, documentar e preservar bens culturais, deduz-se que aproximações podem ser realizadas a partir da representação da informação. A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo geral explorar os pontos de aproximação entre as áreas da Arquivística, Biblioteconomia e Museologia a partir das metodologias para descrição de seus acervos. A conceituação teórica da pesquisa foi pautada no estudo dos conceitos de informação e documentação oriundos da Ciência da Informação e que permitiram aproximar as áreas no que diz respeito às questões relacionadas ao acesso à informação. Outro aspecto pesquisado foi a influência das novas tecnologias de comunicação e informação em cada área e seus procedimentos. Apresentam-se as origens e formação de cada instituição e seus acervos. É realizada uma análise comparativa entre campos selecionados das normas da Isad(G) para arquivos, o AACR2 para bibliotecas e as Diretrizes do CIDOC-ICOM para museus. O resultado do estudo aponta para a similaridade nas recomendações dadas pelas regras e constata-se que a representação da informação em ambiente digital propicia o deslocamento do foco do objeto informacional para a informação, o que compõe um cenário no qual as instituições coletoras de memória poderão estar aptas a elaborar instrumentos de pesquisa seguindo padrões de metadados comuns.<br>Starting from the assumption that libraries, archives, documentation centers, museums and similar institutions are entities which share, among other purposes, the common purpose of accumulating and/or collecting, documenting and preserving cultural heritage, one can infer that from the information representation it is possible to perform approximations. The general aim of the present research is exploring the approximation points among the areas of Archives, Library Science and Museology from the methodologies used to describe their collections. The research technical conceptualization was based on the study of information and documentation concepts derived from the Information Science which allowed approximating the areas concerning issues related to access to information. Another aspect object of research was the influence of new communication and information technologies on each area and their procedures. The origins of each institution and their collections are presented. A comparative analysis of the rules of Isad(G) for archives, AACR2 for libraries and the Guidelines of CIDOC-ICOM for museums among selected fields is performed. The study results points to the similarity in the recommendations given by the rules and it is noticeable that the information representation in a digital environment makes it possible the rearrangement of the information object focus towards the information, thus composing a scenario on which the collector institutions might be apt to devise research instruments following shared metadata patterns.

In 1995 a survey was made at six public libraries in the county of Ostergotland in order to examine the reference service and the use of reference collections. In this paper the methods of the survey are described and the results from two libraries in Norrkoping and Linkoping are being analysed. In the survey several methods were used. During a fortnight observations were made of the use of reference books by the visitors in the reference section. The books were listed. The librarians work at the information desk were also observed at the same time and the librarians wrote all their transactions down as well as their use of reference tools. Two questionnaires were distributed, one to the visitors at the reference section, one to the visitors at the information desk. The results in short: The collections of reference books were extensive, old and not so well used. The visitors used these collections more than the librarians (6-7% versus 1-2%). The location of the reference books means much to the use. The users of reference books are mostly students. There are many questions asked by the visitors and often queus are formed at the information desk . Most questions are simple to solve and depending on diffculties of the visitors to find the books on the right shelves. Both libraries have small assets and shortages in the collections make requested books and subjects hard to find for the visitors. At the information desk there are a lot of other transactions than reference questions like selling, reservations, Pc-help and so on. The librarians used the library catalogue in nearly half of the questions but that was the only reference tool which was used more than marginal. The visitors at the reference desk were mostly students but there were no big differences between students frequency and the general public. Finally the survey shows that the quality of the reference service can and must be improved. There are needs for organisational changes as well as further education of the staff. The libraries in the survey need to focus on the customer's quality more to improve their reference service.

RESUMO:
O novo modelo de ensino-aprendizagem introduzido por Bolonha e a implementação de tecnologias
nas bibliotecas académicas, trouxeram mudanças profundas ao modo como o conhecimento é
produzido e disseminado e conduziram à necessidade de uma reengenharia de espaços, serviços e
competências, conferindo às bibliotecas um maior dinamismo e inovação nos serviços que oferecem,
cada vez mais centrados nas necessidades reais dos seus utilizadores.
Este estudo, analisa as tendências conjeturais centradas na triologia utilizadores/ bibliotecas/
tecnologias, recorrendo à triangulação de dados, baseada na revisão de literatura, na realização de
inquéritos aos utilizadores e bibliotecas portuguesas e europeias e na observação de bibliotecas
através de visitas de estudo, análise das homepages e planos estratégicos.
Os resultados obtidos, permitiram delinear um modelo de biblioteca académica inserida numa rede de
bibliotecas, demonstrando-se que a colaboração entre instituições e a integração comum de serviços
são essenciais para o desenvolvimento futuro destas estruturas académicas, produtoras e geradoras de

Spaces, services and expertise reengineering in the university libraries of 21st century
The new teaching and learning model introduced by Bologna process and the implementation of
technologies in academic libraries, changed the way how knowledge is produced and disseminated
and have created within academic libraries, new needs of space reengeneering, new services and new
librarian skills that increased the offer of dynamic and innovating services with high level quality,
based on new technologies and user centered.
This study is focused in the library trends and based in the analysis of the triology: users / libraries /
technologies and applied as methodology, the data triangulation method, based on the literature
review, user survey / questionnaires to portuguese and european libraries and observation of libraries
in study visits and analysis of their homepages and strategic plans.
The results, brings to the light a new model for the academic library in 21st century embedded in a
network of libraries, showing us that collaboration between institutions and the integration of
services (shared services) are essential for the future development of these academic structures
responsible for producing and sharing knowledge.

This research study has several objectives. The first is to research graphic novels and comic books, their history and the issues this visual and literary medium has had with censorship, with preconceived notions that the medium is only meant for a juvenile audience, and with the development of rating standards. The second objective is to study current literature that has been written by scholars and librarians on this medium. This exploration of graphic novels and comic books and the scholarship and collection development efforts related to them provides a foundation for considering the issues and challenges which current and future librarians may have to face, in maintaining this literary form in library collections. The third objective is to conduct a focus group and to survey librarians in Tennessee from a range of backgrounds in order to consider a number of questions, including: if these librarians have encountered patrons who challenged having these books included in their institutions’ collections, what age range the surveyed librarians believe this medium is meant to appeal to, and how the librarians would rate content in comic books and graphic novels; such as, violence, language, sexual activity, etc.; including terms used by publishers in their rating standards to describe different levels of content. The results from this study showed there was quite a difference between what librarians feel is appropriate for the levels they were given and the types of content; with there being usually at least a 2 - 3 year age difference between the top two to three options chosen or there being a difference between the participants selecting an age range and selecting either “All Ages” or “None” as appropriate. The literature research and the data obtained from the survey along with the responses received from the focus group indicate that, since the majority of participants stated they “sometimes” experienced selection difficulties and problems with cataloging and shelving these books, picking an appropriate age range for a comic book or graphic novel is very subjective and librarians and publishers are still a long way away from agreeing on the appropriateness of the content.
