This article presents a novel and original formula for the higher-order time derivatives, and also for the partial derivatives of screws, which are successively computed in terms of Lie products, thus leading to the automation of the differentiation process. Through the process and, due to the pure geometric nature of the derivation approach, an enlightening physical interpretation of several screw derivatives is accomplished. Important applications for the proposed formula include higher-order kinematic analysis of open and closed kinematic chains and also the kinematic synthesis of serial an

AbstractIn this paper, we present some basic properties concerning the derivation algebra Der (T), the quasiderivation algebra QDer (T) and the generalized derivation algebra GDer (T) of a Lie triple system T, with the relationship Der (T) ⊆ QDer (T) ⊆ GDer (T) ⊆ End (T). Furthermore, we completely determine those Lie triple systems T with condition QDer (T) = End (T). We also show that the quasiderivations of T can be embedded as derivations in a larger Lie triple system.

In this work, we adopt a new approach to the construction of a global theory of algebras of generalized functions on manifolds based on the concept of smoothing operators. This produces a generalization of previous theories in a form which is suitable for applications to differential geometry. The generalized Lie derivative is introduced and shown to extend the Lie derivative of Schwartz distributions. A new feature of this theory is the ability to define a covariant derivative of generalized scalar fields which extends the covariant derivative of distributions at the level of association. We

We will construct these geometric integrators using discrete variational calculus on Lie groups, deriving a discrete version of the second-order Euler–Lagrange equations. Interesting applications as, for instance, a discrete derivation of the Euler–Poincaré equations for second-order Lagrangians and its application to optimal control of a rigid body, and of a Cosserat rod are shown at the end of the paper.

This chapter investigates differential graded algebras. Throughout the chapter, G will be a Lie group with Lie algebra g. On a manifold M, the de Rham complex is a differential graded algebra, a graded algebra that is also a differential complex. If the Lie group G acts smoothly on M, then the de Rham complex Ω‎(M) is more than a differential graded algebra. It has in addition two actions of the Lie algebra: interior multiplication and the Lie derivative. A differential graded algebra Ω‎ with an interior multiplication and a Lie derivative satisfying Cartan's homotopy formula is called a g-differential graded algebra. To construct an algebraic model for equivariant cohomology, the chapter first constructs an algebraic model for the total space EG of the universal G-bundle. It is a g-differential graded algebra called the Weil algebra.

The last section of this chapter marks the end of one form of Jewish life and the beginning of another for the Jews of the Iberian peninsula. The chapter discusses the deportation of the Jews from their ancient homeland and how they produced the first diaspora in history, although the term was not applied to Jewish settlements outside the Land of Israel until Hellenistic time. Jewish life unfolded between exile and return. Some Jewish diasporas were ephemeral, others more enduring. Some diasporas were exceptionally creative, others merely derivative. Ultimately, the chapter illustrates how the Jewish communities tended to relate to each other through shared memories and common traditions and laws, regardless of the cultural level.

Knowledge management in general, and Internet-based knowledge management in particular, is one of the foremost strategic directions being investigated and adopted by corporations today. The promises of better decision making, faster turnaround times, improved organizational communication, and higher levels of cooperation and interaction among personnel, have all combined to create a holy grail kind of aura. Yet, like the grail the goals here are elusive, and the road to reaching them is long and fraught with pitfalls. Each of us, as individuals, performs a variety of functions that can be termed knowledge management. We remember things: names, numbers, experiences, and procedures. We know how to do things such as ride a bike; bake a cake; calculate a derivative; fix a flat tire. We know where to find information that we don’t remember on our own: we write things down; file them; enter them in a PDA. Some of us do it better, some of us are chronically disorganized, but at the end of the day each of us is performing his or her own knowledge management function.

Great hope is being pinned on FMIs. They lie at the heart of the financial system and enable the post-trading business by successfully completing trades and concentrating as well as mitigating risks. This end of the payment and securities settlement business does not usually attract much attention: It is expected to be there and function. In this respect, it is comparable to oxygen in the air – most people do not think about it, however, if something is wrong with it, things can turn bad extremely quickly. Such was the case with the Lehman crisis of 2008, playing a major role in the unfolding of the global crisis of the late 2000s. It became apparent just how vital these FMIs were in enabling the continuation of the globe's securities & derivatives exchanges. In particular, CCPs played a major role in keeping transaction processing ticking over. It became evident which knock on effects the downturn of one institution can have on the global financial landscape. As such, we all depend on those markets and on the performance of what can only be described as ‘knights in shining armour'.

Résumé :
Radiative heating calculations in the atmosphere involve four distinguishable scales of frequency. First, there is the comparatively slow variation with frequency of the Planck function and its derivative with respect to temperature. About one-half of the radiation from a black body at terrestrial temperatures lies in a wave number range of 500 cm-1. The second scale is that of the unresolved contour of a band. For atmospheric molecules other than water vapor, the Planck function is effectively constant over a single band; water vapor bands must be divided into sections of the order of 50 cm-1 wide before this is so. For a rotating molecule, the next relevant scale of frequency is that of the spacing between rotation lines, approximately 1-5 cm-1. Finally, there is the monochromatic scale on which the absorption coefficient may be treated as a constant, and for which Lambert’s absorption law is obeyed: of the order of one-fifth of a line width ≃ 2 x 10-2 cm-1 for a gas at atmospheric pressure, down to 2 x 10-4cm-1 for a Doppler line in the middle atmosphere. This step takes us to a division of the frequency scale that, when taken together with other features of the calculation, presents a formidable computation task. Calculations can, of course, be made and are made at this limiting spectral resolution (line-by-line calculations) but, despite the fact that they are technically feasible with modern computers, such calculations are rare and are usually performed to provide a few reference cases. The great majority of investigations make use of averages over many lines, embracing spectral ranges that are small compared to a band contour (narrow-band models), or over complete bands (wide-band models), or over the entire thermal spectrum (emissivity models.) There are a number of reasons for working with spectral averages. Practical considerations are that important classes of laboratory measurements, and most atmospheric observations (e.g., satellite radiometry) are made with some spectral averaging, often comparable to that of narrow-band models.

Résumé :
The distribution of positive and negative charge in a crystal fully defines physical properties like the electrostatic potential and its derivatives, the electric field, and the gradient of the electric field. The electrostatic potential at a point in space, defined as the energy required to bring a positive unit of charge from infinite distance to that point, is an important function in the study of chemical reactivity. As electrostatic forces are relatively long-range forces, they determine the path along which an approaching reactant will travel towards a molecule. A nucleophilic reagent will first be attracted to the regions where the potential is positive, while an electrophilic reagent will approach the negative regions of the molecule. As the electrostatic potential is of importance in the study of intermolecular interactions, it has received considerable attention during the past two decades (see, e.g., articles on the molecular potential of biomolecules in Politzer and Truhlar 1981). It plays a key role in the process of molecular recognition, including drug-receptor interactions, and is an important function in the evaluation of the lattice energy, not only of ionic crystals. This chapter deals with the evaluation of the electrostatic potential and its derivatives by X-ray diffraction. This may be achieved either directly from the structure factors, or indirectly from the experimental electron density as described by the multipole formalism. The former method evaluates the properties in the crystal as a whole, while the latter gives the values for a molecule or fragment “lifted” out of the crystal. Like other properties derived from the charge distribution, the experimental electrostatic potential will be affected by the finite resolution of the experimental data set. But as the contribution of a structure factor F(H) to the potential is proportional to H−2, as shown below, convergence is readily achieved. A summary of the dependence of electrostatic properties of the magnitude of the scattering vector H is given in Table 8.1, which shows that the electrostatic potential is among the most accessible of the properties listed.

This chapter introduces most of the important mathematics that will be used repeatedly throughout this book. Whilst scalars like the electric potential Ф and the vector fields E and B are familiar quantities in electricity and magnetism, it is not always known that they are examples of a mathematical form termed a tensor. More sophisticated tensors are required in some descriptions and theories in electrodynamics. As tensor notation is compact and usually allows for a simple derivation of a result, the chapter begins with a series of questions involving Cartesian tensors. The results obtained here will facilitate the solution of many questions in subsequent chapters. Readers who are not familiar with tensors are advised to consult Appendix A before proceeding. Towards the end of this Appendix a ‘checklist for detecting errors when using tensor notation’ is given, which will hopefully provide some help for the uninitiated.

This chapter is dedicated to a perplexing set of philosophical fragments today known as “De summa rerum”. Written by the young Leibniz in 1675–6, toward the end of his formative years in Paris, they deal with fundamental topics of philosophy including the first principles of philosophy, the nature of mind and perception, the nature and existence of God, the derivation of particular things from God, and modal philosophy. The “De summa rerum” fragments do not represent a unified philosophical attempt. Written at a time when Leibniz’s intellectual mindset had been both upset and profoundly stimulated by his encounter with the Parisian intellectual scene and his discovery of mathematics, they rather read like a set of philosophical test balloons flying in a great many directions. This chapter focuses on one particularly important strand of these reflections, informed by Spinoza and Spinozism via Leibniz’s exchanges with Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus.

Résumé :
With the increased need for remanufacturing of end-of-life products, achieving economic efficiency in remanufacturing is urgently needed. The purpose of this study was to devise a cost-minimization plan for disassembly and remanufacturing of end-of-life products returned by consumers. A returned end-of-life product is disassembled into remanufacturable parts, which are supposed to be used for new products after being remanufactured. Each end-of-life product is disassembled into parts at variable levels as needed, taking into account not only disassembly but also manufacturing, remanufacturing,

To detect errors or find potential for improvement during the CAD-supported development of a complex technical system like modern industrial machines, the system’s virtual prototype can be examined in virtual reality (VR) in the context of virtual design reviews. Besides exploring the static shape of the examined system, observing the machines’ mechanics (e.g., motor-driven mechanisms) and transport routes for the material transport (e.g., via conveyor belts or chains, or rail-based transport systems) can play an equally important role in such a review. In practice it is often the case, that t

Abstract Rigid bodies are an essential part of multibody systems. As there are six degrees of freedom in rigid bodies, it is natural but also precarious to use three parameters for the displacement and three parameters for the rotation parameters — since there is no singularity-free description of spatial rotations based on three rotation parameters. Standard formulations based on three rotation parameters avoid singularities, e.g. by applying reparameterization strategies during the time integration of the rotational kinematic equations. Alternatively, Euler parameters are commonly used to av

It is difficult for crane operators to lift and maneuver payloads without causing significant, uncontrolled motion. Consequently, research in the area of crane operation has focused on designing controllers to minimize payload swing. However, lifting long and slender payloads (e.g., steel I-beams) from a non-level surface (e.g., like many outdoor construction sites) has not been addressed in much detail. This paper evaluates the amplitude of residual swing and robustness of two different control methodologies while hoisting a slender payload up into the air from an inclined surface. A semi-aut

Résumé :
Siemens Energy has a large fleet of aero derivative gas turbines installed in oil & gas and power generation applications globally. Over the past several years, several incidents of disk corrosion damage have been observed during the power turbine overhauls especially for the units fielded in marine environment. Most of the corrosion attack has been observed at disk firtree (blade attachment features), gas washed disk faces and torque transmission features. In all of these cases the mechanism for corrosion has been identified as Low Temperature Hot Corrosion (LTHC) also known as Type-II su
