Seamless location awareness is considered a cornerstone in the successful deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT). Support for IoT devices in indoor positioning platforms and, vice versa, availability of indoor positioning functions in IoT platforms, are however still in their early stages, posing a significant challenge in the study and research of the interaction of indoor positioning and IoT. This paper proposes a new indoor positioning platform, called ThingsLocate, that fills this gap by building upon the popular and flexible ThingSpeak cloud service for IoT, leveraging its data input

In large-scale context-aware applications, a central design concern is capturing, managing and acting upon location and context data. The ability to understand the collected data and define meaningful contextual events, based on one or more incoming (contextual) data streams, both for a single and multiple users, is hereby critical for applications to exhibit location- and context-aware behaviour. In this article, we describe a context-aware, data-intensive metrics platform —focusing primarily on its geospatial support—that allows exactly this: to define and execute metrics, which capture mean

Abstract The development of mobile and ubiquitous computing has recently been rapid. One of the most promising research and development fields has been location-aware services. These services are challenging as they require a lot of resources for generating maps from spatial data and for visualizing temporary data gathered from the environment. Applying location-awareness and ubiquitous computing in the industry is currently under intensive research and development activities especially because of signs of promising new business opportunities. Résumé :
The ever-increasing use of mobile devices allied to the widespread adoption of wireless network technology has greatly stimulated mobile and ubiquitous computing research. The adoption of mobile technology enables improvement to several application areas, such as education. New pedagogical opportunities can be created through the use of location systems and context-aware computing technology to track each learner's location and customize his/her learning process. In this chapter, the authors discuss a ubiquitous learning model called LOCAL (Location and Context Aware Learning). LOCAL was created to explore those aforementioned pedagogical opportunities, leveraging location technology and context management in order to support ubiquitous learning and facilitate collaboration among learners. This model was conceived for small-scale learning spaces, but can be extended in order to be applied to a large-scale environment. Initial results were obtained in a real scenario, attesting the viability of the approach.

The spread of smartphones in recent years announced an era of smarter and advanced mobile applications that not only show information but also adapt themselves to users’ surroundings. In this chapter, the authors present a context-aware mobile system in public bus transportation domain based on Windows Phone platform. The principal objective of this system is using users’ location, identity, and timeframe as context data to tailor shown information according to users’ needs. Together with users’ previous actions, the system predicts intended activity in the form of presenting users with preferred bus lines in the current context. The developed system shows how context-awareness and activity prediction can be combined to create mobile applications that do not require a lot of user interaction but still offer detailed information about specific domains.

Résumé :
With the rapid developments of mobile telecommunications technology over the last two decades, a new computing paradigm known as ‘anywhere and anytime’ or ‘ubiquitous’ computing has evolved. Consequently, attention has been given not only to extending current Web services and mobile service models and architectures, but increasingly also to make these services context-aware. Privacy represents one of the hot topics that has questioned the success of these services. In this chapter, we discuss the different requirements of privacy control in context-aware services architectures. Further, we present the different functionalities needed to facilitate this control. The main objective of this control is to help end users make consent decisions regarding their private information collection under conditions of uncertainty. The proposed functionalities have been prototyped and integrated in a UMTS location-based mobile services test bed platform on a university campus. Users have experienced the services in real time. A survey of users’ responses on the privacy functionality has been carried out and analyzed as well. Users’ collected response on the privacy functionality was positive in most cases. Additionally, results obtained reflected the feasibility and usability of this approach.
