Résumé :
Water-based lubrication provides cheap and environmentally friendly lubrication and, although hydrophilic surfaces are preferred in water-based lubrication, often lubricating surfaces do not retain water molecules during shear. We show here that hydrophilic (42° water contact angle) quartz surfaces facilitate water-based lubrication to the same extent as more hydrophobic Si crystal surfaces (61°), while lubrication by hydrophilic Ge crystal surfaces (44°) is best. Thus surface hydrophilicity is not sufficient for water-based lubrication. Surface-thermodynamic analyses demonstrated that all sur

An effective solution to this problem is the use of technical means of lubrication, which ensure a reduction in the wear rate of the crests of rolling stock wheels. Based on the survey of modern foreign and domestic lubrication devices and technologies, the main types of flange lubrication systems are identified: onboard (on rolling stock), track stationary, mobile rail-lubricators. Foil air bearings are self-acting hydrodynamic bearings which rely upon solid lubricants to reduce friction and minimize wear during sliding which occurs at start-up and shut-down when surface speeds are too low to allow the formation of a hydrodynamic air film. This solid lubrication is typically accomplished by coating the nonmoving foil surface with a thin, soft polymeric film. The following paper introduces a systems approach in which the solid lubrication is provided by a combination of self lubricating shaft coatings coupled with various wear resistant and lubricating foil coatings. Lubricating grease is commonly applied to lubricate e.g. rolling bearings, sealsand gears. Grease has some clear advantages over lubricating oil: it is a semisolidmaterial, which prevents it from flowing/ leaking out from the bearingsystem and gives it sealing properties, and it also protects the system fromcontaminants and corrosion. Due to its consistency, lubricating grease has manyadditional advantages over lubricating oil: it does not require pumps, filters andsumps. An investigation into the effect of nanofluid minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) on the temperatures in surface grinding is presented and discussed. Six types of nanoparticles, namely molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), carbon nanotube (CNT), polycrystalline diamond, aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and silica dioxide (SiO2), are considered to mix individually with a pollution-free palm oil in preparing the nanofluids. A commonly used Ni-based alloy was chosen as the workpiece material. It is shown that CNT nanofluid results in the lowest grinding temperature of 110.7°C and the associated energy proportionality coefficient of 40.1%. The relevant physical properties of the nanofluids such as the coefficient of thermal conductivity, viscosity, surface tension, and the contact state between the droplets and workpiece surface (contact angle) were discussed to shine a light on their effect on the cooling performance. A mathematical model for convective heat transfer coefficient was then developed based on the boundary layer theories.

Résumé :
Beginning with the rise of the American whale fishery in the 1750s, this chapter explores the violent accumulation and circulation of energy embodied in whales. The lives and struggles of workers across the Atlantic world were caught up in the politics and processes of producing oil lights. Enslaved Africans forced into nightwork in West Indian sugar houses, the London poor confronting new state-sponsored street lamps, cotton mill laborers, and Pacific mariners were tangled together around common threads of American whale oils. American deep-sea whaling voyages first triggered a street lighting revolution that radiated from London to Europe and America, while a New England run trade in spermaceti candles, whale oil, slaves, and sugar helped illuminate and circulate the people and goods caught up in colonial transatlantic sugar slavery. Later, American whale oils lubricated an industrial revolution in cotton manufacturing, while fugitive slaves and free blacks carved out a geography of freedom in the globe-spanning Quaker-run fishery. As these entwined revolutions in night and cotton intensified in the antebellum period, they overwhelmed the capacity of the American fishery to meet the demand for both light and lubrication, even as ship masters drove whalemen on harder and longer voyages for less pay.
