Résumé :

O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores de alimentos do mundo. As produções agrícolas e animais estão concentradas em determinadas regiões do país. A pecuária tem sido percebida como uma ameaça constante para a quantidade e a qualidade dos recursos hídricos. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto de sistemas de produção pecuários/agrícolas na qualidade da água superficial na sub-bacia do Rio Pinhal que está localizado em Concórdia, Santa Catarina. Oito pontos de amostragem, representando diferentes usos da terra (LU1: gado leiteiro; LU2: sem animais; LU3: gado leiteiro + porcos + aves de corte + culturas; LU4: porcos + aves de corte + culturas; LU5: gado leiteiro + porcos + aves de corte + culturas + humanos; LU6: gado leiteiro + porcos + culturas; LU7 e LU8: gado leiteiro + porcos) foram avaliados. As águas foram amostradas durante o verão, outono, primavera e inverno de 2006 a 2009. LU1 apresentou a pior qualidade da água com altas concentrações de sólidos suspensos totais (SST) e demanda química de oxigênio. Neste ponto, os animais tinham acesso ao rio. A maior concentração de nitrato (NO3-N) foi encontrada na foz do rio. Houve maiores concentrações de SST, NO3-N e NO2-N na estação chuvosa. Nesta estação há intensiva aplicação de fertilizantes orgânicos para os campos de milho. Outono e inverno apresen-taram a pior qualidade da água em relação à concentração de nitrogênio. Os resultados mostraram forte relação entre as fontes de poluição e qualidade da água. O gerenciando o uso de fertilizantes orgânicos com o de fertilizantes químicos e a recuperação das áreas ripárias são ações mitigatórias importantes para proteger a qualidade da água do rio Pinhal.

Résumé :

Vibronic spectra of lutetium oxide (LuO) seeded in supersonic molecule beams are investigated with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy and second-order multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate perturbation (MCQDPT2) theory. Six states of LuO and four states of LuO+ are located by the MCQDPT2 calculations, and an a3Π(LuO+) ← C2Σ+ (LuΟ) transition is observed by the MATI measurement. The vibronic spectra show abnormal vibrational intervals for both the neural and cation excited states, and the abnormality is attributed to vibrational perturbations induced by interactions with neighboring states.

Résumé :

This paper presents the design and simulation of self-lift positive output P/O luo converter using Incremental Conductance (IncCond) algorithm for photovoltaic applications. The solar panel model is developed using the basic circuit equations of photovoltaic cell. The MPP of a solar panel varies with irradiation and temperature. The IncCond algorithm is used to track the maximum power from the solar panel. The unregulated voltage from the panel will be regulated by using the self-lift luo converter. It will reduce the voltage and current ripple. As for component stress, the self-lift luo converter has a smaller voltage and current stresses than the original luo converter. Matlab/Simulink is used for simulation studies.

In the contemporary world, the issue of childbearing is a matter of choice. A couple may decide to bear children or not. However, within the Luo community, childbearing is an obligation that must be fulfilled by every couple; when this is not met, the couple faces several challenges. This is due to the importance the Luo community have on children. Children ensure the continuity of the lineage, and they ensure the immortality of the dead parents, among others. This article examines the burden the Luo childlessness women have to bear. The findings in this article are based on a cross-sectional field study conducted among the Catholic Luo childless couples in Western Kenya. The Luo Catholic childless couples were sampled using snowball, the Catholic priests and catechists were purposively sampled, and, the Small Christian Community (SCC) leaders were systematically sampled. Data was collected through in-depth oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions. These generated qualitative data that was transcribed, coded, analyzed thematically and presented in a descriptive form and verbatim narratives as stated by the key informants. The findings of the study indicate that the Luo childless women face a number of challenges such as alienation, stigmatization, and ridicule, among others. These challenges affect their lives within the families and at the entire community. The study recommends that childless couples to undergo a medical examination to ascertain if they can be assisted.

This paper interrogates the role Ohangla performance has played in transforming the Luo community’s gender consciousness. The analytical procedure was informed by the theories of gender, advanced by the concepts of Butler’s and de Beauvoir. Their theories played a significant role in the analysis of gender related practices integrated and displayed in the Ohangla performances. Thus the study argued that since gender is performance, it should be seen as a fluid variable which shift and change in relation to the social context. Through ethnographic method of data collection, the study attempted to understand the ways in which culture, on one hand, and the performer of the Ohangla, on the other hand, adjusts to the cultural modification in informing the Luo community about the cultural changes with an aim of transforming the Luo community’s gender consciousness. The study sampled respondents among the Luo Ohangla artists and their audience drawn from Siaya County’s Bondo and Rarieda sub-counties. Two sets of data were collected for this study; they comprised some Ohangla performances and information about the artists' use of Ohangla performance as a vehicle for transforming social consciousness. Data was collected mainly using participant’s observation and in-depth interviews. Recording was done by taking field notes, making comments, and videotaping Ohangla performances. The data was analyzed qualitatively. The study offered insights on the understanding of the contemporary Luo Ohangla performances and the social transformations Ohangla performance had created overtime so as to conform to the current social demands of the Luo society.

AbstractThis essay explores the relationships between three Luo grandmothers and their grandchildren with particular attention to forms of address and of sharing as practices of amity. Classic Africanist kinship studies identified these as central to the relations between alternate generations. We argue that they are also crucial to our understanding of some aspects of the notion of ‘love’ (hera) that old and young Luo describe as constitutive both of grandmotherhood in particular and of sociality in general. We shall intertwine these concerns of the first generation of social anthropologists, in what were then imagined as pre-modern societies, with the concerns that contemporary, modern Luo grandmothers and grandchildren have with love. Love or amity, and their attendant everyday practices of sharing, retain their importance both for the grandmaternal bond and for broader Luo sociality. Rather than providing an unquestioned and unequivocal prescriptive framework, these practices of relatedness are situated within an imaginative field which is often explicitly dichotomised. Some practices stress individual selves and autonomous subjects, while others emphasise the sharedness of the self and the primacy of relations over subjects. Rather than adhering to one or the other of these poles of relatedness and personhood, modern Luo grandmothers and grandchildren create their everyday lives between them, drawing on divergent ideas and practices, while enjoying, where possible, the pleasures of'love’.

Résumé :

Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) cultivars are classified into four types depending on the nature of astringency loss of the fruit. The pollination-constant, non-astringent (PCNA) persimmons lose their astringency on the tree as the fruits develop. This PCNA trait is qualitatively inherited and recessive to the other three types, pollination-constant, astringent (PCA), pollination-variant, nonastringent (PVNA), and pollination-variant, astringent (PVA). In fact, crosses among Japanese PCNA cultivars yield only PCNA type in F1 generation as shown in recent breeding programs at the National Institute of Fruit Tree Science. Despite these previous results, we demonstrated here that non-PCNA (PVNA, PVA, and PCA) type offspring were derived at relatively high rates in the F1 generation from a cross between `Luo Tian Tian Shi', a PCNA accession from China, and the Japanese PCNA cultivar, `Taishu', despite the fact that `Luo Tian Tian Shi' was confirmed to be a true PCNA type by measuring tannin cell size, a principal morphological characteristic to distinguish PCNA cultivars from non-PCNA ones. When segregations of tannin cell size and tannin content in three progenies of the breeding populations derived from Chinese PCNA `Luo Tian Tian Shi' × Japanese PCNA `Taishu', Japanese PCNA `Shinshu' × Japanese PCNA `Taishu', and Japanese PVNA (non-PCNA) `Kurokuma' × Japanese PCNA `Taishu' were investigated, all offspring between Japanese PCNA cultivars contained only small tannin cells and were PCNA types, and those between Japanese PVNA × PCNA cultivars contained only large tannin cells and were non-PCNA types. However, hybrids between `Luo Tian Tian Shi' and `Taishu' segregated into populations of small and large tannin cells, indicating that `Luo Tian Tian Shi' is likely heterozygous for astringency. Therefore, Chinese PCNA `Luo Tian Tian Shi' should be different from Japanese PCNA cultivars in genetic makeup.

Résumé :

There is a non-astringent type of persimmon that loses its astringency naturally on trees, despite the absence of seeds. This type is called pollination-constant and non-astringent (PCNA)-type. PCNA-type was thought to have originated in Japan as a mutant that terminates tannin accumulation at an early stage of fruit development. This trait is confirmed to be recessive and the PCNA-type must be homozygous in all alleles. In fact, crossing among PCNA-type individuals yields only the PCNA-type in F1, while crossing between PCNA-type and non-PCNA-type yields only the non-PCNA-type. However, a new PCNA cultivar, `Luo Tian Tian Shi', was reported in 1982 to exist in Luo Tian County, China, and this PCNA-type seemed to have different mechanisms to be PCNA-type. Our previous report showed that a crossing between `Luo Tian Tian Shi' and Japanese PCNA `Taishu' yielded both PCNA-type and astringent-type in F1, indicating that the trait of PCNA in `Luo Tian Tian Shi' may be dominant. To confirm this hypothesis, we made crossings between `Luo Tian Tian Shi' and Japanese astringent-type `Yotsumizo' or `Iwasedo', and top-grafted these seedlings for earlier fruiting. As we had some fruits in a total of 25 F1 individuals last year, we investigated segregation of astringency among these individuals. We also confirmed the parental relationships of these progenies by analyzing several SSR markers. We confirmed the segregation of PCNA-type and astringent-type in F1. No mistake of artificial pollination was shown in all individuals by SSR markers. Thus, we concluded that the trait of astringency-loss in `Luo Tian Tian Shi' is dominant and the use of this cultivar as a parent will open a new window for breeding PCNA-type persimmon.

Résumé :

PC box-girder bridge with corrugated webs is a new kind of bridge, which named by the thin steel webs replacing thick concrete webs. It is applied abroad in China recently, which attracts attention for its shearing property. Because of lacking relative design and construction code interiorly, the related data of Mi-Luo-Jiang bridge was used in the study with the software ANSYS 10.0. The shearing property and bucking stability of Mi-Luo-Jiang bridge were studied and a theory was verified: corrugated webs do not bear moment and axial force. Besides, the result that the decisive parameter of shearing property of Mi-Luo-Jiang bridge should be allowable shear stress is obtained. The other study had been done on buckling stability of box-girder bridge with different corrugated shapes, maintaining other parameters invariant. Finally, the optimal scope of lateral plane length is [0.2,0.4], and the optimal scope of folded angle is [20º,50º]. The parameters used in Mi-Luo-Jiang bridge is verified as the best value. This study is meaningful and the results can be applied in the design and construction of the same type bridge.

Résumé :

In this paper, I construct a linguistic framework for understanding contrasting conceptions of political contest. That framework is illustrated by applying it to the particular case of Luo of Kenya in the wider context of the country’s conflictual ethno-politics.The article, which rests on a conception of political contest as a structure of competition in which individuals and ethnic communities compete for political supremacy (over others, or at the expense of others), analyses selected instances of recent texts from online blogs, music and recorded public meetings. The article shows that, just like many other language communities, Luo key concepts and understandings emanate from its social and cultural institutions. Also, as those activities serve as source domains for other areas of social existence, including politics, the article argues that the conceptual metaphors deriving from frames such as POLITICAL CONTEST IS HUNTING/WAR/ WRESTLING/A FOOTBALL MATCH or POLITICAL CONTEST IS WOOING A WIFE are still common among the Luo today, even though some issues like hunting and war are no longer matters of everyday life. As the article argues, understanding the Luo Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs) of political contest may be very useful in peace and conflict studies.

Expression patterns of the genes involved in condensed tannin (CT) biosynthesis during fruit development was investigated in a Chinese pollination-constant, nonastringent (PCNA) persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) `Luo Tian Tian Shi'. The transcript levels of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and dihydroflavonol reductase (DFR) in `Luo Tian Tian Shi' were detected at high levels throughout the fruit growth. Chalcone synthase (CHS) and flavonol 3-hydroxylase (F3H) also continued to be transcribed during fruit growth, although their levels decreased earlier than PAL and DFR. In contrast, expression levels of these genes declined into undetectable levels at an early stage of fruit development in Japanese PCNA persimmon. In addition, anthocyanidin reductase (ANR), which encodes a key enzyme of the proanthocyanidin biosynthesis, was transcribed at high levels in `Luo Tian Tian Shi' during fruit growth, but not in Japanese PCNA persimmon. By contrast, the expression of D. kaki serine carboxypeptidase-like protein 1 (DkSCPL1) that was obtained from suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) analysis between artificially astringency-removed fruit and astringent fruit in a different experiment, declined earlier than the other flavonoid biosynthesis genes in `Luo Tian Tian Shi', coincident with the termination of the tannin cell development. In the F1 progeny of the cross between `Luo Tian Tian Shi' and Japanese PCNA `Taishu', similar expression patterns were obtained among segregated PCNA and astringent offspring. These results indicate that Chinese PCNA is different from Japanese PCNA in expression of the genes involved in CT biosynthesis. In conclusion, we clarified that expression of the genes (PAL to ANR, but not SCPL) involved in flavonoid biosynthesis was continuous in the Chinese PCNA cultivar, despite the termination of tannin cell development.

Land use optimization (LUO) first considers which types of land use should exist in a certain area, and secondly, how to allocate these land use types to specific land grid units. As an intelligent global optimization search algorithm, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been widely used in this field. However, there are no comprehensive reviews concerning the development process for the application of the Genetic Algorithm in land use optimization (GA-LUO). This article used a bibliometric analysis method to explore current state and development trends for GA-LUO from 1154 relevant documents published over the past 25 years from Web of Science. We also displayed a visualization network from the aspects of core authors, research institutions, and highly cited literature. The results show the following: (1) The countries that published the most articles are the United States and China, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the research institution that publishes the most articles. (2) The top 10 cited articles focused on describing how to build GA models for multi-objective LUO. (3) According to the number of keywords that appear for the first time in each time period, we divided the process of GA-LUO into four stages: the presentation and improvement of methods stage (1995–2004), the optimization stage (2005–2008), the hybrid application of multiple models stage (2009–2016), and the introduction of the latest method stage (after 2017). Furthermore, future research trends are mainly manifested in integrating together algorithms with GA and deepening existing research results. This review could help researchers know this research domain well and provide effective solutions for land use problems to ensure the sustainable use of land resources.

As a common expression, the Luo word jaber seems to be ordinary or even casual, yet it is a capsule of profound ideas within the context of Luo aesthetics. Jaber literally means “a person of beauty”: it is often used to describe females who have exceptional physical qualities that make them outstandingly attractive and deeply pleasurable to look at. The article advances the view that the term jaber offers us a key to understanding the aesthetics of the Luo of Kenya and of Western Nilotic-speakers in general. The author drew from personal experience, informal interviews, unpublished songs and existing literature as a basis for description and analysis of jaber. The picture that emerged suggested that visual beauty is only one layer of the meaning of jaber. Exploration of other layers and meanings in a broad context revealed that the expression points to aesthetic ideals, and can therefore be regarded as artistic. Dholuo speakers use the term to express appreciation of what they see, hear and feel; but it is also an intellectual tool used to offer a critique of concrete and non-concrete objects. Pollination-constant and nonastringent (PCNA) is one of the most desirable traits in persimmons as this type of cultivar loses its astringency while still on the tree before harvest. Among Japanese PCNA cultivars, the trait is qualitatively inherited and recessive to pollination-constant, astringent (PCA), pollination-variant, nonastringent (PVNA), and pollination-variant, astringent (PVA) types. However, in a previous trial, both astringent and nonastringent types segregated in the F1 population that resulted from a cross between a Chinese PCNA `Luo Tian Tian Shi' and a Japanese PCNA cultivar. Because of the unusual segregation, in this study, we crossed another Japanese PCNA `Okugosho' with `Luo Tian Tian Shi' to confirm the segregation of astringent types by measuring the tannin cell size and tannin concentration at harvest. Previously, we found that astringent types have larger tannin cells than PCNA-type. The F1 hybrid progenies from the cross segregated into both PCNA and astringent-type individuals in approximately 1:1 ratio. Likewise, the F1 population from the astringent-type `Yotsumizo' and `Iwasedo' × `Luo Tian Tian Shi' were ascertained to contain both PCNA and astringent types, which indicates that the PCNA trait of `Luo Tian Tian Shi' was dominant. Thus, this Chinese cultivar has the potential to become an important parental material for future breeding of PCNA persimmons.

This article examines the organisation of concepts of intelligence among the Luo people in rural Kenya. In particular, it discusses what the components of these concepts are; how these components are expressed in the DhoLuo language, how they are interrelated, how they are used in judgements of other people, and how these components of Luo conceptions of intelligence are related to Western conceptions of intelligence. Peer, teacher, and adult in the community ratings of children on Luo components of intelligence are correlated with performance on conventional ability tests and with school achievement. The Luo concept of intelligence is primarily expressed in the DhoLuo vocabulary by four concepts (rieko, luoro, paro, and winjo), which appear to form two latent structures, social-emotional competence and cognitive competence. Indicators of only one of these concepts (rieko) and only one latent structure (cognitive competence) correlate with scores on conventional Western cognitive ability tests and with school achievement in English and mathematics. The article also presents a novel method for analysing data from people’s ratings of each other’s intelligence that is useful when not every one who is providing the ratings knows everyone who is to be rated, and when Likert rating scales are inapplicable.

This paper interpolates multitudinous controller for positive output elementary super lift LUO converter (POESLL). The pursuance of the converter under manifold such as variation in input, load are developed and compared for current mode controller and SMC.

Sie trat 2005 erstmals schriftstellerisch in Erscheinung und bis heute hat sie zwei Erzählbände1 sowie vier Romane2 publiziert. Für den Erzählband Du fliegst jetzt für meinen Sohn aus dem fünften Stock wurde Luo 2007 mit dem Adalbert-von-Chamisso-Förderpreis ausgezeichnet. Anecdotal evidence in several sub-Saharan African countries, including Kenya, suggests a complex relationship between ethnicity and intimate partner violence (IPV). Yet very few studies examine the relationship between these two important variables. We use a sample of 4,512 ever-married women from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) to explore the relationship between ethnicity and three dimensions of IPV (physical, sexual, and emotional) among Kenyan women. Results show significant relationships between ethnicity and physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Compared with Kikuyu women, Luo and Luhya women were significantly more likely to report having experienced all three types of violence. The addition of socioeconomic variables reduced the risks of experiencing IPV among Luo and Luhya women significantly, but not completely. These findings suggest that beyond their socioeconomic vulnerabilities, there may be some intrinsic cultural characteristics that expose Luo and Luhya women to IPV in Kenya.

Abstract Luo converter is one amid the developed DC-DC converters offering higher voltage gain. Soft-switching techniques, like zero-voltage switching (ZVS), repress switching losses, and hence the system efficiency and the life of the power semiconductor switches are improved. Incorporation of soft switching in fixed-frequency operation of the Luo converters may persuade them in the regulated power supply applications. The existing variable switching frequency solution suffers from a number of problems viz. complexity in filter designing, more electromagnetic interference (EMI), etc. This paper proposes a positive output elementary Luo converter (POELC) involving ZVS with the wherewithal of working in fixed frequency. A comprehensive discussion on the proposed circuit topology is detailed with both simulation and experimental studies. Systematic descriptions of basic POELC, variable-frequency ZVS-POELC, and fixed-frequency ZVS-POELC make an impact on the understanding of related concepts by the researchers in this field.

The Luo are a Nilotic people living in western Kenya, north-eastern Tanzania and in western Uganda. Their language, Dholuo, forms part of the Western Nilotic group of languages. This article presents the traditional kincepts (kinship terminology) of the Luo people as described by elders living in Central Sakwa location, Siaya County, western part of Kenya. The kincepts for consanguine as well as affine relatives in up to three ascending and five descending generations are described. The paper applies a combined linguistic and anthropological approach. Linguistically, the terms are analysed in relation to current Dholuo vocabulary, grammar and modes of expression. Anthropologically, the Luo kinship rules of patrilineality and virilocality are considered. The domain of kincepts is a research field bringing together linguistics, anthropology and history. It contributes to the inquiry of diachronic linguistics, which can provide insights on the development and interaction of related languages as well as population groups’ migratory patterns not least in parts of the world where written historical sources are scarce.

This paper reports an investigation of the scientific justification of room temperature and the beliefs on Luo Pan Compass; a part of Feng Shui wisdom. The compass is a rule of thumb on the placement of a particular room within a house to achieve indoor comfort and occupants’ well-being based on house orientation to the wind direction. The study was conducted in a quantitative method consists of field measurements and questionnaire survey. The result was to be consulted with indoor temperature comfort standard and to the Luo Pan Compass. Eight houses were selected in a purposive method. The investigation showed that the indoor temperature of seven out of eight studied houses were not within the standard. It was in good agreement with the respondents’ opinions. The finding of this study may be referred by building designers that Luo Pan Compass is relevant to the temperature comfort level of the indoor environment.

Résumé :

A crucial issue in applying the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator for decision making is the determination of the associated weights. This paper proposes a general least convex deviation model for OWA operators which attempts to obtain the desired OWA weight vector under a given orness level to minimize the least convex deviation after monotone convex function transformation of absolute deviation. The model includes the least square deviation (LSD) OWA operators model suggested by Wang, Luo and Liu in Computers & Industrial Engineering, 2007, as a special class. We completely prove this constrained optimization problem analytically. Using this result, we also give solution of LSD model suggested by Wang, Luo and Liu as a function of n and α completely. We reconsider two numerical examples that Wang, Luo and Liu, 2007 and Sang and Liu, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 2014, showed and consider another different type of the model to illustrate our results.
