The lute tablature CH-Bu F IX 70 was compiled by Emanuel Wurstisen (1572–1616), a Basel University student, who became a physician in Biel toward the end of his life. His biography has been supplemented here so as to include new information concerning, among other things, his collaboration with German surgeon Wilhelm Fabricius Hildanus during the first decade of the seventeenth century. When commencing his tablature, in 1591, Wurstisen planned to divide it into eight books, each devoted to works of a similar genre. Abstract The ‘Krakow lute tablature’ (c.1553–1592) is preserved among the little-explored collections of the Ivan Franco National University in Lviv, Ukraine. This article is devoted to the 21 unique hand drawings on the tablature folios. Did such illustrations have any significance for readers of tablature in the 16th century? Were the hand-signs intended to convey information about the pieces to which they were obviously assigned, or even about the manuscript as a whole? Were they of didactic importance, and do they relate to performance practice around 1550 in the Polish–Lithuanian region?

Beyond the scholarly approval still remains the question of which criteria are—or are not—specific to determine if a manuscript is—or is not—a Family 13 member. In this way, the present paper focuses on five criteria: (1) the transfer of the pericope of the adulteress to a position after Luke 21:38; (2) the transfer of the pericope of the angel and the sweat like drops of blood from Luke 22:43-44 to a position after Matt 26:39; (3) the omission of the sign of the times (Matt 16:2a-3); (

Luke 23.34a, ‘Father forgive them for they know not what they do’, has been a textual conundrum in text criticism. The weight for the external evidence points to the probability that this logion of Jesus from the cross was not in the earliest manuscript of Luke. What motivation then led to this saying being added to the text of Luke? In this article, the argument is made that a numerical motivation is at the heart of the addition. Luke 23.34a was added in order that there be seven sayings and not six that Jesus spoke from the cross. This issue arose as the four Gospels were collected together

Appealing to ancient number theories, reception history, and Luke’s manuscript tradition, this essay maintains that 70 and 72 were often, strangely, the same number in antiquity. Résumé :
AbstractThis essay discusses the text of the 3rd c. uncial 0171. The uncial consists of three fragments, two pertaining to the text of Luke, and one pertaining to the text of Matthew (10: 17-32), which is the focus of the present study. Despite its extremely fragmentary nature, certain letters are sufficiently legible to permit a faithful reconstruction of the text. Although the “Western” character of the manuscript is well-established, some of the earlier studies of the textual variants seem to have overlooked or misinterpreted a number of key elements. Through a verse by verse reassessment o

This article proposes that parallel traditions among the Dead Sea Scrolls offer a comparative data-set by which to reassess “the Synoptic problem” in the New Testament gospels. The Dead Sea materials, not only shared traditions but also differences between them, whether in the manuscripts of the same work or overlapping portions of different works, show similarities to the ways in which the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and the putative “Q” overlap and depart from one another. The multiple degrees in which some Dead Sea texts evolved underscore the plausibility that, with or without the infl

Selline lisaeitus leidub juba 1686. aastal ilmunud „Wastses Testamendis”. Uue Testamendi esimesed eestikeelsed tõlked on teinud saksa soost pastorid, kellel oli raskusi eituste edasiandmisel saksa keele omast erineva lausestruktuuriga eesti keeles. Kasutades aastatest 1680–1705 pärinevate tõlkekäsikirjade trükis avaldatud tekste, on artiklis va

The article is devoted to a new interpretation of the well-known postscript in the so-called Ostromir Gospels—the earliest Russian manuscript, written in 1056/1057. In this afterword on fols. 294r and 294v, one of scribes (deacon Gregory by name) twice asked for a blessing for Ostromir the “Posadnik,” who had paid for the creation of this outstanding manuscript. The first blessing requested is the blessing of the Holy Evangelists. Although it is perfectly appropriate for someone who ordered such an expensive Gospel book to ask for blessings from the evangelists, the names of the evangelists we
