Résumé :

The airline industry and Sustainable ValueThe airline industry are, by many, considered to be an industry with a high level of environmental impact, in other words an environmental destroyer. Although some argue that it still does only produces a small part of the world’s total emissions it is still an industry under high pressure from regulatory institutions and customers.

Sustainable value is a rather new concept and allows the user measure a company’s social and/or environmental performance in monetary terms, which is the main difference from many financial calculation models. The ADVANCE sustainable value method is based on theories of opportunity costs and can give indications in terms of efficiency in comparison to a chosen benchmark.Purpose With the use of this method we are interested in finding out if an airline can create a sustainable value even though they are performing an activity that, for some, is seen as destroying the environment? The sustainable value method prime users would be stakeholders such as investors and as many companies in the airline industry are non-public companies, we also aim to discuss a wider range of usage for this method such as for the management internal decision process.

MethodWe have chosen three major Swedish airlines to base our calculations on by using a nonprobability selection. We have excluded companies that are not registered in Sweden, does not provide actual passenger transport, are so called “virtual airline” and/or have not any publicly available information. A virtual airline, in this context, refers to an airline that does not own or lease any own aircrafts and instead are buying passenger chairs from another airline, called codesharing. We will benchmark our calculations towards the Swedish GDP and the Swedish Transport sector.

Theoretical frameworkThe management’s task is to, among other things, implement measures for the management accountants to use in their work. Corporate Sustainable Responsibility’s (CSR) general idea is to act responsible towards the most important questions for their stakeholders such as investors, government etc. CSR has led to that more sustainability information to stakeholders is produced, the type of information that we are using in our calculations. Our findingsBy the use of the ADVANCE method we can see that in fact airlines, despite the high preasure can create a positive Sustainable Value while comparing to the transport sector. We also argue the method can be used by the management as a complement to their other financial measures as it gives other efficiency indications than traditional methods.

This thesis expands on models that predict delays within the National Airspace System (NAS) in the United States. We propose a new method to predict the expected behavior of the NAS throughout the course of an entire day after only a few flying hours have elapsed. We do so by using k-means clustering to classify the daily NAS behavior into a small set of most commonly seen snapshots. We then use random forests to map the delay behavior experienced early in a day to the most similar NAS snapshot, from which we make our type-of-day prediction for the NAS. By noon EST, we are able to predict the NAS type-of-day with 85% accuracy. We then incorporate these NAS type-of-day predictions into previously proposed models to predict the delay on specific origin-destination (OD) pairs within the U.S. at a certain number of hours into the future. The predictions use local delay variables, such as the current delay on specific OD pairs and airports, as well network-level variables such as the NAS type-of-day. These OD pair delay prediction models use random forests to make classification and regression predictions. The effects of changes in classification threshold, prediction horizon, NAS type-of-day inclusion, and using wheel off/on, actual, and scheduled gate departure and arrival times are studied. Lastly, we explore how the delay behavior of the NAS has changed over the last ten years and how well the models perform on new data.

Résumé :
Globally, the aviation industry supports 58.1 million jobs in related industries and U.S. airlines alone generated 11.8 million jobs. Airline performance, productivity, and profitability depend on employees. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies that U.S. airline leaders use to improve employee performance. The study was grounded with the Harvard model of human resource management. A stratified purposeful sample of 14 managers and 10 frontline staff from a Florida airline participated in semistructured individual interviews and a focus group, respectively. The data from these interviews were analyzed using Moustakas's modified van Kaam method. The themes that emerged from analysis included: an emphasis on the individual interaction and verbal affirmations between managers and frontline staff, additional career development opportunities for employees, not only for performing in their role but improving performance and level of commitment to the organization. Furthermore, managers and employees arrived at the same conclusion about organization culture and commitment-individuals have to feel they are contributing to the overall mission and feel valued in doing so. For the latter to occur, leaders need to engage employees in continuous dialogue and be completely transparent, and employees need to be open to feedback and share their motivations and goals. Social change implications include improved management and labor relationships within the U.S. airline industry, which ultimately benefits the flying public through greater stability and better service.

Résumé :

The US airline industry has seen its share of woes with increased oil prices, several wars, acts of terrorism, and economic meltdowns to name a few. US Airlines have been challenged financially as evidenced by the realities of airline bankruptcies experienced by several legacy carriers that have struggled to remain financially viable. However, one major US airline and legacy carrier was for many years able to withstand the perils of bankruptcy, possible in most part due to the sacrifices made by its employees. This sacrifice was significant as the majority of an airline's total costs can be attributed to unionized labor. In what they believed to be a sacrifice that all employees would share, unionized flight attendants at Airline XYZ took a significant pay cut to help keep the airline out of bankruptcy, only to later see executives at the company receive bonuses while they continued to see cuts in labor and benefits. This study examines the sacrifices made by flight attendants at this major US airline, management, and the concept of broken agreements experienced in the aftermath of those sacrifices. It explores the concept of broken agreements and the perception of inequity as they relate to flight attendants and their decision to leave their careers at Airline XYZ.

In response to the many challenges faced by US airlines in the past decade, merger activity has increased significantly. By combining their networks, airlines commonly aim to not only realize cost synergies but also achieve revenue synergies as well through increased network coverage. In practical terms, this means that the combined airline can cut its total capacity without reducing traffic as it benefits from a larger network and more connecting options via its hubs. The objective of this thesis is to find evidence to confirm this effect based on recent merger activity by comparing both capacity and traffic data before and after the integration period. Particular emphasis is placed on the changing role of hubs to highlight capacity and traffic shifts in a combined network. Two of the most recent major mergers, Delta-Northwest and United-Continental, exhibit how the networks of previously independent carriers were consolidated to achieve the above-mentioned synergies. Delta concentrated capacity at its largest hub in Atlanta and a small number of additional hubs while other hubs experienced a significant downsizing. Additionally, the airline also eliminated a large number of point-to-point services that were bypassing the hubs in order to maximize the use of its hubs. United and Continental, on the other hand, engaged in fairly minor capacity redistribution instead of sweeping reductions. Both carriers increased the share of capacity operated by regional partners and grew capacity between most of the hubs as well. Over the same time frame, however, both of the combined airlines lost passengers compared to their pre-merger levels. While exogenous factors like the recent recession and operational issues played a role, network strategies at both airlines also affected traffic. Delta was unable to recover most of the passengers it lost on the eliminated point-to-point services. For United, the shift towards more international capacity indicates a displacement of domestic traffic by international connecting passengers. Although both carriers had not returned to their pre-merger traffic levels by the end of the integration period, Delta's 2012 performance suggests that network integration and consolidation can have positive effects in the long run.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a two-stage evaluation model for assessing the operation performance of a sample of 32 international airlines over 1998-2000 and making performance comparisons between Taiwanese airlines and other countries’ airlines, using data envelopment analysis (DEA). In the first stage, five inputs (operating expenditures, labor, number of flight, seat-kilometers available, and cargo-ton kilometers) and four outputs (number of passengers, seat-kilometers, cargo-kilometers, operation revenue) were used for overall operation performance measure. In the second stage, productive and selling efficiencies of these airlines were examined. To sharpen our analysis, we used various DEA models and regression analysis. The non-controlled (NCN) model was used to deal with the uncontrollable output of number of passengers; the assurance region (AR) model was employed to take into account of imposing weights restrictions on the inputs and outputs variable; cross efficiency measure is utilized to identify the best performance airline; Malmquist Index was employed to examine the productivity growth of these airlines; finally, regression analysis is used to investigate the impacts of business characteristics on the operation performance. The results of this study show that (1) Iran Air (1998) achieved overall efficiency under the AR model; 18 airlines were rated overall efficiency under NCN model; (2) under the AR model, in general, 4 sample airlines experienced increasing returns to scale, 1 sample airlines experienced constant returns to scale and other 68 sample airlines experienced decreasing returns to scale; (3) the airline that achieved high productive efficiency does not mean it would achieve high selling efficiency; (4) airlines perfored well in different regions are: Delta Airlines and American Airlines in America, Iran Air in Asia, Ryan air in Europe; (5) Eva was the best performance among international airlines; (6) the productivity growth of these airlines over 1998-2000 was increasing; and (7) business characteristics have low impacts on airlines operation performance.

Belay, Abeyi Abebe. « Operational performance measurement of world major airlines with a particular emphasis of Ethiopian airlines : an integrated comparative approach ». Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24946.

Résumé :
Organizations specifically the airlines industry are increasingly facing the challenges of operational efficiency measurement. During the last years enormous attention has been given to the assessment and improvement of the performance of productive systems. However, literatures show that there are limitations of the existing models to measure efficiency uniformly and exhaustively across the airlines. The problems are due to lack of the technical efficiency measuring model which unifies and integrates different measuring models into a single model. Therefore, this thesis investigates assessment of the operational performance of world major airlines by employing integrated comparative models to address the above problems. In this study, technical efficiency is addressed among many performance issues by using three types of modes of performance measurement: a non parametric one, represented by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and; a parametric one, represented by Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) and the Balance Scorecard (BSC) which is a strategic management tools. Unlike most of the previous studies, this study integrates the BSC concepts into DEA and SFA model. To evaluate technical efficiency of major international airlines, the study use panel of unbalanced data for the year 2007-2014 to make integrated comparative analysis. The research project incorporates seven leading variables and four lagging variables taken from BSC concept to implement into the DEA and SFA. All the three models of performance measurements have their own strength and limitation if they are used alone. But if the three models are integrated and combined together, they would yield better comparative and quality of efficiency assessment. Therefore, the study primarily developed a model beginning from the theoretical framework assumption into building of a unified comparative model of integrated comparative operational efficiency assessment of airlines. The research design and methodology uses secondary data collection i.e. annual reports and business reports of airlines which are collected from the airlines own website. The huge amount of financial and operational data cannot be collected by using primary data collection method as it would make it practically impossible and expensive. So by employing secondary data collection method saves time, money and a panel data can be accessed and generated easily. Hence, from 100 world major airlines population which are ranked by revenue, simple random sampling is used to select 80 samples airlines for this study. First, the BSC identifies the input and output variables. Next, the DEA model ranks the efficiency measurement, identifies the slack variables and benchmarks the airlines. Third, the SFA model identifies technical efficiency, the random error and technical inefficiency. Finally, the technical efficiency estimates obtained from the two techniques are analyzed comparatively. The research makes further analysis of particular case of the Ethiopian Airlines in relation to the most efficient and inefficient airlines and in comparison of the regional analysis. After extensive tests have been conducted, ‘Balanced Frontier Envelopment’ model is developed. According to this model, it is a paramount to measure efficiency with combining the strength of three models together and gives better results than the previous one or two combined models. The developed and integrated strategic model enhances measuring of the operating technical efficiency of airlines. This model benefit the airlines industry in many ways such as minimizing the cost and maximizing profit through managing technical efficiency which lead into the success of the airlines. From the model perspective, therefore, result of DEA model is much higher than the result of SFA model. DEA model is easier to manipulate than the SFA model because the former does not need the functional form while the later requires a functional form. Furthermore, according to the efficiency finding of the study, first, the European regional airlines are relatively more efficient than the rest of regions in the world. Second, the North America regional airlines are the second more efficient regional airlines in the world. Third, the Ethiopian airlines are the most efficient in Africa when we compare among Egyptair, Kenyan Airways and South African Airways. Fourth, high revenue does not necessarily leads to the technical efficiency of the firm.

Recently, plenty of low cost carriers (LCC), being so called budget airlines, have been sprung up as a result of the global recession, the currency of cost down tour industry supplies caused more and more self-toured or business-trip tourists’ demands uprising from all around the world, vice versa. There are several household low cost carriers (LCC) companies such as Peach Airlines, Tiger Airlines, Vanilla Airlines, Spring Airlines, Scoot Airlines, Air Asia Airlines, V Airlines, responding to this kind of new trends and consumer demands, almost every LCC companies will do their best to cut down the cost in each possible productive processes for constantly offering the cheapest flight tickets on the website in the market to draw much more clients to visit and purchase their products online. Although they all have been doing every effort to attract most of the needy and potential travelers online as a result of the macro-global economical recession, this study prefers to focus on the micro-marketing strategy and websites’ usability to analyze why LCC industry can have incredible success in Taiwan fastly. To successfully make a research on the phenomonum in Taiwan, This research would like to shed light on the micro-analyses on the websites’usability and marketing strategy as a key point to make a difference and compare vertical rising of the LCC industy here in Taiwan. Therefore this thesis manage to apply Delphi surveys and polling methods to diagnose all of the three successful Japanese LCC airlines’ websites and transform the indexes from 14 into 7 major influential factors as:information and ordering interfaces, website visual designing, ticket pricing, attraction on sale, airline route diversifying, divergent ways of paying system, and multi-packages of ticket associations factors to poll and identify the usability and marketing strategy successes from all of the three Japanese LCC airlines’ websites. Finally but not the least, this conclusion would like to propose some constructive suggestions on usability and marketing strategy oriented to the benefits of the LCC airlines companies and its industry.

The deregulation and open sky of commercial air transportation has contributed to a fierce competition and challenge in air transport business. To remain competitive, airlines must render satisfactory service quality to their passengers. Over the past several years, considerable attention has been devoted to service quality in airline industry. However, since the direct airway over the Taiwan Strait between Mainland China and Taiwan has been officially launched, the airlines industries between two sides are facing severe marketing competition. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute to in-depth understanding and comparison both in the ground service and in-flight service quality served from two major carriers. One of them is China Airlines (CI), the flag carrier in Taiwan, and the other is Air China (CA) in Mainland China respectively. The sample frame of the survey is constructed based on the study proposed by Chen and Chang (2005), which consists of 15 evaluation factors (attributes) for airline’s ground services and the other 15 evaluation factors (attributes) for airline’s in-flight services. The respondents also have been divided into two different segments, airline members and non-members, for further evaluation and comparison for their perception on above-mentioned airlines service quality. The significant difference analysis and results are also listed based on the following 4 different hypotheses, which are (1) CI and CA members’ perception on in-flight service quality, (2) CI and CA members’ perception on ground service quality, (3) CI and CA non-members’ perception on in-flight service quality, and (4) CI and CA non-members’ perception on ground service quality. Finally, suggestions on managerial implications and future studies are also discussed based on the results of this research.

Global transportation network drives economic growth. The aviation industry is facing severe competitive pressures. Surviving and developing in an unfavorable environment is an urgent business issue for aviation industry. This study adds meta-frontier dynamic data envelopment analysis method for undesirable outputs. The number of employees, the number of airports, the number of fleets are inputs, total revenue and passenger load are output, and the flight delayed rate is undesirable output. The paper uses K-W(Kruskal-wallis-Test) to analyze whether there are other factors that affect the efficiency of the airline. The results are as follows: 1.The average efficiency value of the aviation industry has decreased year by year from 2014 to 2016. 2.The number of airports and flight delayed rate may be important factors in the companys inefficiency. 3.Only Oneworld in the alliance, the technology gap ratio is increasing year by year, indicating that the efficiency value of this aviation is continuously improved and corrected to achieve better efficiency. 4.Aviation alliances will affect operational efficiency.

Résumé :
This dissertation investigates the relationship of competition and firms' price responses, by analyzing: i) whether new entry reduces price discrimination, ii) when incumbents reduce price discrimination preemptively in response to the threat of entry, and iii) how competition increases prices. The dissertation consists of three independent essays addressing each of the above questions. The first two essays present an empirical analysis of the airline industry and the third essay presents a theoretical analysis of the credit card industry. In the empirical study of the relationship between competition and firms' pricing in the airline industry, I emphasize the importance of distinguishing the equilibrium behaviors with respect to different market characteristics. Major airlines can price discriminate differently in a market where they compete with low-cost carriers comparing to in another market where they don't, and also they can respond dfferently to the threat of entry depending on whether they are certain about the rival's future entry. The study reveals that competition has a positive effect on price discrimination in the routes where major airlines compete against one anther. In these routes, competition reduces lower-end prices to a greater extent than upper-end prices. In contrast, an entry by low-cost carriers results in a significant negative relationship between competition and price discrimination. Thus, the opposite results in the literature are both evident in the airline industry, and it is very important to identify the different forces of competition on price discrimination. Firms can respond to potential competition as well as actual competition. So, I extend the study to the relationship of potential competition and price discrimination, specially in cases where major airlines compete against one another while facing Southwest's threat of entry. I also attempt to suggest major airlines' motives of reducing price discrimination preemptively. The results of the study suggest that incumbents reduce price dispersion when it is possible to deter the rival's entry and that the potential rival discourages incumbents from deterring entry by announcing before its beginning service. Finally, I examine when competition can increase prices in a market, by analyzing the issuing side of the credit card industry. This industry is characterized by a two-sided market with a platform. Under the no-surcharge rule that restricts merchants to set the same price for cash and card purchases, the equilibrium interchange fee increases with competition. This occurs because issuers can compensate losses from competing on the issuing side by collectively increasing the interchange fee. As a result, limiting competition may improve social welfare when the interchange fee is higher than the social optimal level. In contrast, in the absence of the no-surcharge rule, the analysis shows that competition always improves social welfare by lowering the price of the market.

In the beginning, airline transportation had only served the needs of the military. However, with the rapid development and innovation, air transport nowadays has been associated with the demand for conveyance of passenger and good, which makes it enhance to become a crucial industry playing important role for the world economy in general and for international trade in particular. In line with that trend, the Asian aviation industry in recent years has also made great leaps. As the Asia’s economy will continue to grow higher than any other region in the world leading more and more passengers will fly over the next 20 years, the competition among airline enterprises are also increasingly harsh. As a result, those companies must continually improve their service quality and performance efficiency if they do not want to be eliminated. Motivated by that reason, the researcher conducted this study to evaluate the performance of 16 major airline carriers in the region, thus providing a more comprehensive picture of Asian aviation industry for the time being. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Grey model GM(1,1) were employed in this research. Through DEA Window model analysis, it is found that Emirates, Cebu Pacific and SriLankan Airlines are those carriers which have had outstanding performances while Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Japan Airlines are slowly lagging behind and losing their leading positions in the industry. The buoyant emergence of Chinese airline corporations has also contributed to the new face of this service business. Nevertheless, with Grey GM(1,1) model and Malmquist results, it is apparent that the productivity of 16 aviation companies will improve with optimistic signals in the future.

This study aims to examine how fuel prices changes, exchange rate, and the national savings rate changes are correlated with Earnings Per Share (EPS) of airline companies. By using descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and multicollinearity, I analyzed how EPS for the three airline prices reacted to exchange rates, the savings rate of reaction, and proposed an idea of industrial policy. According to the research, we found that, whether short-term or long-term, these three airlines are subjected to the price of West Texas of fuel (WTI), and are all negative-related. The main reason is that the cost of fuel accounts for a large proportion in airline operating costs. The rising of fuel prices caused airlines EPS to decrease. TransAsia airline was affected less because the cross-strait policies and trade relations .The influences of oil price fluctuation on EVA air and China airlines are relatively obvious. The main reason is that the freight market was affected by the slow global economic recovery. Exchange rate and EPS for the three airlines are significantly negative-related. In other words, the decline of exchange rate for New Taiwan dollar against US Dollar ( the appreciation of the NT) has a significant impact on China airlines EPS. As expected, national savings rate of three airlines and EPS are positive-related. When the savings rate increases, business and family have more money to consume , such as travel abroad, cross-border business activities. This study applies the DHS (Daniel, Hirshleifer and Subrahmanyam, 1998) and event study methodologies to examine the effects of market disclosed information on investors’ investment behavior and analyze factors affecting abnormal return of individual companies. Recent major events-911 terrorist attack in the U.S. for 2001, shut down of West Cost Harbor in the U.S. for 2002, and U.S.-Iraq War in 2003 in global and local transportation logistics are affecting stock prices and operation performance of U.S. and Taiwan air and marine carriers largely leading to irrational investment behavior. Study period is from 1998 to 2005. Results show the tendency of irrational investment behavior and abnormal return in Taiwan more than the U.S. Negative abnormal returns are statistically correlated to events including 911 terrorist attack, U.S.-Iraq war 2003, and U.S. West Coast Harbor shut down.

Taiwan suffered from the serious natural disasters, the 718 floods in 2008, the 88 floods in 2009, and the Tainan earthquake in 2016, respectively. And Japan suffered from the 311 earthquake in 2011 and Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, respectively. For the airline industry, the reduction in flights and ticket demand resulted in price of tickets to drop. If the natural disasters led to a long-term shutdown to the semiconductor industry, the whole industry will be affected. This paper examined the impact of five major natural disaster events, as mentioned above, against Taiwan and Japan on Taiwan’s Semiconductor and Airline Stocks and obtained the following results: 1. There are abnormal returns on stock market because of natural disaster event. 2. There are different abnormal returns between the airline and the semiconductor stocks. 3. There are different abnormal returns due to different financial factors of companies.
