Methods used for correction and modeling of frequency response of sound devices are discussed in this paper. Besides classic methods of digital filter design, more advanced and complex numerial methods are reviewed, Prony and Steiglitz-McBride in particular. This paper focuses on structure utilizing parallel sections of second-order IIR filters. Methods for calculating coefficients of this structure are presented and later implemented. For selected method, utilizing dual frequency warping, an interative algorithm for automatic calculation of parameters necessary to filter design is implemented - so called Particle Swarm Optimization. Six ways of evaluation filter design precision are presented and the results are compared. Functions realizing filter design are implemented in C++, MATLAB and Python. A VST module simulating the filter in real time is also provided.

Already regarded as one of the top teams in Negro League baseball, the Kansas City Monarchs became known as a powerhouse unit in the 1930s and 40s. They rolled into towns with lights, amazing athletes, and competitive play. They won championship after championship during these years as Kansas City baseball fans strongly supported them. As they became an integral part of the city, the Monarchs' success, open-seating policy, and jazzy home openers fostered a large following of mixed-race fans. The local black newspaper, the Kansas City Call, held them up on a pedestal, while sportswriters for the mainstream Kansas City Star/Times downplayed the Monarchs' accomplishments and influence in the community. This thesis focuses on the relationship the Call had with the best team in black baseball through the context of its treatment of games, players, league officials, and team owners, as well as other patterns and tactics. Analysis of the Star/Times coverage is also considered to show variances in coverage between one city's race-divided newspapers. Negro League baseball and the African American newspapers that covered the teams grew out of and illustrated the segregation laws and prejudices feelings that existed in the United States during most of the twentieth century. Over time, especially when the sports world moved into the post-integration period, the Call's bolstering of the Monarchs deteriorated as the paper's promotion of democracy steered its sportswriters away from a baseball organization that symbolized segregation. The different types of coverage by the Call throughout the twenty-year study can be described as all-out promotion, balance, and abandonment. In the 1950s nostalgia and conflict existed, as the Call's sportswriters became torn on how to cover a team that was once the pride of the black community, but now represented inequality. In an attempt to remedy this torment, the Call tried to convince black baseball officials to remove the “Negro League” stigma by signing players of all races in order to mirror the more democratic Major Leagues. The white press, meanwhile, ignored the bigger issues of black baseball as one Negro League team after another died in the 1950s. The Star/Times peripheral coverage of the Monarchs provides context to the social issues and discriminatory practices at play in Missouri. As this thesis outlines the coverage of the Monarchs through the Black and White newspapers of Kansas City, previous research is substantiated and challenged to provide a fuller account of Jim Crow's effects.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>控制工程系<br>85<br>In this thesis, we present a new adaptive notch filter (ANF) toestimate frequencies of multiple narrow-band signals or sine waves in an additive broad-band noise.The new ANF model is derivedby combining the adaptive line enhancement (ALE) structurewith the Steiglitz-McBride Method (SMM) with constrained poles and zeros.When the decorrelation delay parameter ''delta''=1, the new ANFis shown to be equivalent to iterative filtering algorithm (IFA) model for''rho''=1, and is equivalent to recursive generalized least square (RGLS) model for ''rho'' < 1.If the observed measurement data is corrupted by color noise,the new ANF still can provide accurate frequency estimation if we choose appropriate value of ''delta''.When the new ANF is executed off-line, the algorithmwill converge if the noise is white. When the new ANF isexecuted on-line, we provide a sufficient conditionfor the new ANF. When the condition is met, the on-linealgorithm will converge.The tracking property of the new ANF is analyzed for white noisecase and is shown to have the same tracking performance as that of RML (Recursive Maximum Likelihood).Extensive simulations show that the convergence properties of the proposed ANF are comparable to those of RML, and the new ANF has better frequency resolution. The proposed ANF does not needthe stability monitoring if the initial guess is stable.The new ANF is computationally simple and hasfast convergent speed, and the bias of convergent point is small.It also has good frequency resolution and high frequency tracking capability. Therefore, the new ANF is suitablefor practical applications.

The aim of this thesis was to clarify the reasons of the formal diversity that can be observed in selected films by director Jim McBride. The hypothesis is based on the fact that these movies are characterized by different tendencies of independent American cinema in the 50s and 60s. The aim of the work was to prove that similar diversity of stylistic devices was accepted and even supported in the ecosystem of American underground. The starting point for historical research and analysis was a poetics of cinema approach outlined by David Bordwell in Poetics of Cinema. From this perspective, the thesis examines the immanent and distant factors that may have influenced McBride's works. After an introduction of these theoretical starting points, working hypotheses connected with individual films and with the creative ecosystem were defined. Formal heterogeneity was demonstrated on Shirley Clarke's work and in Marie Menken's film Notebook. The chapters are followed by an analysis of three McBride's movies. A closer analysis of selected categories of film form confirmed the hypothesis that the films are really distinct and that their director interacted with various traditions and norms.

From the self-narration of McBride and his white Jewish mother, Ruth, readers are led into different adventures in different social contexts. McBride and Ruth tell how they perceive racism in different ways. Their self-narrations offer the reader choices to see racism either from the black man’s point of view or the white Jewish woman’s point of view. Also, discourses from others become an important material to affect McBride’s and Ruth’s perception of racism. This thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I offer an overview of both the text and context of the novel. I put emphasis on the novel as a dialogic text and its characters’ identity as the production of linguistic construction. In the second chapter, I will apply M.M. Bakhtin’s concepts of multiple voices in my analysis of the novel. Those voices form a dialogue to highlight the concept that the identity is as fluid as water. In the third chapter, I will deal with the issue of identity and argue that identity is not born naturally but constructed with different discourses. The concluding chapter foregrounds the main issues discussed in the thesis. By exploring construction of the literary text and the identity of characters, I reaffirm my argument that both the novelistic text and the characters’ identity, constructed with different discourses, and in different contexts, are always in the process of becoming.

碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>機械工程學系所<br>106<br>In this thesis, applications of an adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with a Steiglitz-McBride (SM) type algorithm for active noise control (ANC) are explored. An adaptive IIR filter with lower-order can achieve a desired ANC performance as compared to a finite impulse response (FIR) filter with higher-order. However, the conventional FuLMS algorithm may have a problem of local minima in ANC applications. A SM type algorithm can handle this problem. Nevertheless, a problem of slow convergence still exists in the conventional SM type algorithm. In this study, a commutation error (CE) is proposed and incorporated into the SM type algorithm to develop a new algorithm for ANC applications. Results of computer simulation demonstrate that SM type algorithm with CE has a faster convergence rate of about 5 seconds but lower level of noise attenuation of about 2dB than that of the conventional SM type algorithm. An exponential decay step size (EDSS) is then proposed to replace the constant step size for simulations. Results show that the EDSS can make up for the lost level of noise attenuation. Experimental results support the simulation results and demonstrate that the SM type algorithm with CE and EDSS has a convergence rate of about 5 second faster than that of the conventional SM type algorithm at the same level of noise attenuation. Together, results of simulation and experiment support the feasibility of the proposed method for practical ANC applications.

碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>外國語文學研究所<br>107<br>In this thesis, I read the works of the Irish novelist Eimear McBride, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing (2013) and The Lesser Bohemians (2016), as failed stories of development and trauma narratives. Marked by truncated words and broken syntax, McBride&apos;&apos;s elliptical style enacts the impacts of sexual abuse on language and human psyche, and penetrates to the core of bodily experience and trauma, breaking out of the radical interiority of pain. Read together, Girl and Bohemians are two sides of the same coin, as they explore alternative models of subject formation in a hostile environment that hinders maturation. In Girl, the nameless girl&apos;&apos;s interior monologue shows that she is incapable of externalizing trauma, and her profound isolation culminates in her half-formed identity and life. By contrast, in Bohemians, the conversation between the two protagonists indicates that survival is possible through the witnessing of trauma based on the responsibility towards the other&apos;&apos;s alterity. A relational model of subjectivity, then, is needed in the face of trauma. On the other hand, the silenced mothers in the two novels suggest that the breakdown of the balance between self-assertion and mutual recognition, which leads to the polarities of effacement or unconditional elevation of the other, is the potential origin of trauma.

Jazz music is transmitted by aural and oral means. As recording and broadcast mediums became increasingly ubiquitous, starting in the mid twentieth-century, an ever greater proportion of jazz’s aural transmission would be mediated by these developing technologies. Many commentators address sound’s mediation from one state to another by identifying the resulting recording as an object. This object transcends temporal and spacial proximity, possessing inherent authority with implications for authorship, related work-concepts, and even issues of cultural assimilation. From a perspective informed by writings in musicology, philosophy, and sound studies, I examine recorded jazz music from the twentieth-century. I begin by positioning the history of jazz music in relation to the emergence of recording technologies to establish recordings as authoritative texts. I then translate (by transcription) primarily non-literate jazz recordings into the primarily literate discourse of musicology. In the course of examining music by James Moody, Eddie Jefferson, Bud Powell, Chick Corea, and others, I conclude that they all exemplify musical intertextuality. In some cases, technological mediation connects the texts. I then turn to an examination of recordings specifically. I begin by questioning musical notation as an adequate description of sound and move to developing a broader analytical framework. This thesis culminates with a comparison of Bud Powell’s 1949 recording of Bouncin’ With Bud and Chick Corea’s 1997 recording. Using the framework mentioned, disparate potentialities afforded by each recording’s mediation are connected to musical characteristics.<br>Graduate

This thesis examines Tse Keh Nay (Sekani) ethnic identity over three periods of Aboriginal-European relations: the fur trade period, the missionary period, and the treaty and reserve period. It examines the affects these three periods have had on the Tse Keh Nay as an ethnic group in four chapters, the first two dealing with the fur trade and missionary periods, and the last two with the treaty and reserve aspects of the treaty and reserve period. In it I argue that during the first two periods wider Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity was reinforced, while during the latter period local Tse Keh Nay identities were reinforced through government policies that dealt with Tse Keh Nay subgroups on a regional and localized basis. Despite this shift in emphasis, wider Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity has remained, proving that Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity is both situational and dynamic.<br>History
