Abstract. Reducing methane emissions is essential to tackle climate change. Here, we address the problem of detecting large methane leaks using hyperspectral data from the Sentinel-5P satellite. Our method involves three separate steps: i) background subtraction, ii) detection of local maxima in the negative logarithmic spectrum of each pixel and iii) anomaly detection in the background-free image. Abstract. Efficiently detecting large methane point sources (super-emitters) in oil and gas fields is crucial for informing stakeholder decisions about mitigation actions. Satellite measurements by multispectral instruments, such as Sentinel-2, offer global and frequent coverage. However, methane signals retrieved from satellite multispectral images are prone to surface and atmospheric artifacts that vary spatially and temporally, making it challenging to build a detection algorithm that applies everywhere. Hence, laborious manual inspection is often necessary, hindering widespread deployment

Methane is the most frequently analyzed gas with different concentrations ranging from single ppm or ppb to 100%. There are a wide range of applications for gas sensors including urban uses, industrial uses, rural measurements, and environment monitoring. The most important applications include the measurement of anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and methane leak detection. In this review, we discuss common optical methods used for detecting methane such as non-dispersive infrared (NIR) technology, direct tunable diode spectroscopy (TDLS), cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), c

We have developed an open-path hand-held gas detector incorporating a distributed feedback InGaAs laser diode at 1.65μm. Incorporated into a hand-held transceiver unit, the emitted laser beam is backscattered from nearby surfaces, collected and focussed onto an amplified InGaAs detector using a 150mm diameter plastic Presnel lens. At ranges of 4-5metres, a typical backscattered signal is tens of nanowatts of laser light. Résumé :
In June 2012, the RAM Program conducted a comprehensive field study to evaluate the performance of current off the shelf sensor technologies for detecting gas and oil leaks on pipelines. This study had three key objectives: 1. Evaluate the capabilities of current technologies that are offered commercially for methane leak detection monitoring using standard pipeline patrol aircraft 2. Provide a test location for development of emerging technologies that are not yet commercially available for pipeline leak detection 3. Assess the feasibility of using airborne sensors to detect staged liquid oil
