Porphyrosiphon annulatus sp. nov. belonging to Microcoleaceae, Oscillatoriales was collected from the moist soil under the rock in the Gwanggyo Mountain of Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, Korea and cultured. Using the raw and cultured samples of the collected strains, we observed their morphological features through LM and TEM. Furthermore, their 16S rRNA gene and 16S–23S rRNA intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were determined to be used phylogenetic analyses. We affirmed that thick sheath of the cells possessed transversely annular and longitudinal lamellations. The ultrastructure o

Taxonomic characterization by a polyphasic approach was carried out on two cyanobacteria, AP17 and AP24 isolated from soil biofilms of two separate islands, Lothian and Sagar respectively, of the Indian Sundarbans. The strains were studied morphologically by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Growth responses to various salinities were recorded. Molecular data included sequencing and phylogenetic study of the 16S rRNA gene as well as analysis of the 14 regions of the 16S-23S ITS regions. Morphologically the strains were found to be non-heterocytous, having attenua

A checklist of Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae) has been made by reviewing available literature in order to contribute to the knowledge of biodiversity of algae in the Punjab state of India. The list records 317 taxa of the phylum Cyanobacteria distributed among 74 genera, 32 families, and six orders. The order Oscillatoriales has 115 taxa, followed by Nostocales (84), Synechococcales (60), Chroococcales (49), Spirulinales (8), and Pleurocapsales (1). The family Nostocaceae has the maximum number of genera followed by Microcoleaceae, Chroococcaceae, Oscillatoriaceae and other reported families

Résumé :
The proliferation of benthic cyanobacteria has been observed in Lake Baikal since 2011 and is a vivid manifestation of the ecological crisis occurring in the littoral zone. The cyanobacterium Symplocastrum sp. has formed massive fouling on all types of benthic substrates, including endemic Baikal sponges. The strain BBK-W-15 (=IPPAS B-2062T), which was isolated from sponge fouling in 2015, was used for further taxonomic determination. A polyphasic approach revealed that it is a cryptic taxon of cyanobacteria. Morphological evaluation of the strain indicated the presence of cylindrical filament

Microbial communities play a key role for central biogeochemical cycles in the subsurface. Little is known about whether short-term seasonal drought and rewetting events influence the dominant microbes involved in C- and N-cycles. Here, we applied metaproteomics at different subsurface sites in winter, summer and autumn from surface litter layer, seepage water at increasing subsoil depths and remote located groundwater from two wells within the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory, Germany. We observed changes in the dominance of microbial families at subsurface sampling sites with increasing dis

Résumé :
Cyanobacterial taxonomic studies performed by using the modern approaches always lead to creation of many new genera and species. During the field survey for cyanobacterial resources in China, a filamentous cyanobacterial strain was successfully isolated from a microbial mat attached to rock surfaces of the Ganfu Channel, Jiangxi Province, China. This strain was morphologically similar to the cyanobacterial taxa belonging to the genera Microcoleus and Phormidium. The phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that this strain formed a well-supported clade, close to the filam

Human activities more and more intensify the pollution of aquatic ecosystems. These pollutants lead to some Cyanobacteria proliferation causing “blooms” or “efflorescence” and disappearance of sensitive species. The aim of the study was to determine the composition and variation of Cyanobacteria community in some polluted wetlands of Nkwen in Bamenda. Sampling of Cyanobacteria took place from October 2022 to September 2023 by using plankton net for phytoplankton and scrubbing for periphyton. Some hydromorphological and physicochemical parameters of water were measured in situ and in the labora

The paper is devoted to the researches of species composition and taxonomic structure of algae in the saline coastal reservoirs of the Pryazov National Natural Park (PNNP). It is established that species composition of algae in the studied reservoirs under modern conditions includes 153 species. These species represented 7 divisions, 11 classes, 32 orders, 61 families, 92 genera. The highest species richness at the level of divisions showed Cyanoprokaryota (43.8% of the total number of species), Bacillariophyta (32.0%) and Chlorophyta (20.9%).
