Cell collectives, like other motile entities, generate and use forces to move forward. Here, we ask whether environmental configurations alter this proportional force-speed relationship, since aligned extracellular matrix fibers are known to cause directed migration. We show that aligned fibers serve as active conduits for spatial propagation of cellular mechanotransduction through matrix exoskeleton, leading to efficient directed collective cell migration. Epithelial (MCF10A) cell clusters adhered to soft substrates with aligned collagen fibers (AF) migrate faster with much lesser traction forces, compared to random fibers (RF). Fiber alignment causes higher motility waves and transmission of normal stresses deeper into cell monolayer while minimizing shear stresses and increased cell-division based fluidization. By contrast, fiber randomization induces cellular jamming due to breakage in motility waves, disrupted transmission of normal stresses, and heightened shear driven flow. Using a novel motor-clutch model, we explain that such ‘force-effective’ fast migration phenotype occurs due to rapid stabilization of contractile forces at the migrating front, enabled by higher frictional forces arising from simultaneous compressive loading of parallel fiber-substrate connections. We also model ‘haptotaxis’ to show that increasing ligand connectivity (but not continuity) increases migration efficiency. According to our model, increased rate of front stabilization via higher resistance to substrate deformation is sufficient to capture ‘durotaxis’. Thus, our findings reveal a new paradigm wherein the rate of leading-edge stabilization determines the efficiency of supracellular collective cell migration.

Invasive cancer cell migration is a key feature of metastatic human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated modes of cancer cell invasion using two pancreatic cancer cell lines with differential epithelial–mesenchymal status, PANC-1 and BxPC-3, under 3D culture conditions. Multicellular tumor spheroids (TSs) were grown in a collagen matrix co-cultured with pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs) using microchannel chips. PANC-1 cells showed individual migration from TSs via invadopodium formation. BxPC-3 cells showed plasticity between collective and individual migration in either mesenchymal mode, with filopodium-like protrusions, or blebby amoeboid mode. These two cell lines showed significantly different patterns of extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, with MMP-dependent degradation in a limited area of ECM around invadopodia for PANC-1 cells, or MMP-independent extensive deformation of ECM for BxPC-3 cells. Cancer cell migration out of the collagen channel significantly increased by PSCs and directional cancer cell migration was mediated by fibronectin deposited by PSCs. Our results highlight the phenotypic heterogeneity and plasticity of PDAC cell migration and ECM remodeling under 3D culture conditions. This 3D co-culture model of pancreatic cancer cells and PSCs offers a useful tool for studying cancer cell migration and ECM remodeling to identify and develop potential molecular targets and anti-cancer agents against human PDAC.

Blocking glioma cell invasion has been challenging due to cancer cells that can swiftly switch their migration mode, and agents that can block more than one migration mode are sought after. We found that small molecule 2-(1H-indole-3-carbonyl)-thiazole-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (ITE), an endogenous aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonist, can block more than one mode of glioma cell migration, based on cultured cell behavior captured by videos. Data from wound-healing assays and mouse xenograft glioma models corroborated ITE’s migration-inhibiting effects while knocking down AHR by siRNA abolished these effects. To identify genes that mediated ITE-AHR’s effect, we first collected gene expression changes upon ITE treatment by RNA-seq, then compared them against literature reported migration-related genes in glioma and that were potentially regulated by AHR. MYH9, a component of nonmuscle myosin IIA (NMIIA), was confirmed to be reduced by ITE treatment. When MYH9 was overexpressed in the glioma cells, a good correlation was observed between the expression level and the cell migration ability, determined by wound-healing assay. Correspondingly, overexpression of MYH9 abrogated ITE’s migration-inhibiting effects, indicating that ITE-AHR inhibited cell migration via inhibiting MYH9 expression. MYH9 is essential for cell migration in 3D confined space and not a discovered target of AHR; the fact that ITE affects MYH9 via AHR opens a new research and development avenue.

ABSTRACT We address the nature of the giant clumps in high-z galaxies that undergo violent disc instability, distinguishing between long-lived and short-lived clumps. We study the evolution of long-lived clumps during migration through the disc via an analytical model tested by simulations and confront theory with CANDELS-HST observations. The clump ‘bathtub’ model, which considers gas and stellar gain and loss, involves four parameters: the accretion efficiency α, the star formation rate (SFR) efficiency ϵd, and the outflow mass-loading factors for gas and stars, η and ηs. The corresponding time-scales are comparable to the migration time, two-three orbital times. The accretion-rate dependence on clump mass, gas, and stars, allows an analytical solution involving exponential growing and decaying modes. For the fiducial parameter values there is a main evolution phase where the SFR and gas mass are constant and the stellar mass is rising linearly with time. This makes the inverse specific SFR an observable proxy for clump age. When η or ϵd are high, or α is low, the decaying mode induces a decline of SFR and gas mass till the migration ends. Later, the masses and SFR approach an hypothetical exponential growth with a constant specific SFR. The model matches simulations with different, moderate feedbacks, both in isolated and cosmological settings. The observed clumps agree with our predictions, indicating that the massive clumps are long-lived and migrating. A challenge is to model feedback that is non-disruptive in massive clumps but suppresses SFR to match the galactic stellar-to-halo mass ratio.

Abstract Neutrophils represent the first line of cellular defense against invading microorganism by rapidly moving across the blood–endothelial cell (EC) barrier and exerting effector cell functions. The neutrophil recruitment cascade to inflamed tissues involves elements of neutrophil rolling, firm adhesion, and crawling onto the EC surface before extravasating by breaching the EC barrier. The interaction between neutrophils and ECs occurs via various adhesive modules and is a critical event determining the mode of neutrophil transmigration, either at the EC junction (paracellular) or directly through the EC body (transcellular). Once thought to be a homogenous entity, new evidence clearly points to the plasticity of neutrophil functions. This review will focus on recent advances in our understanding of the mechanism of the neutrophil transmigration process. It will discuss how neutrophil–EC interactions and the subsequent mode of diapedesis, junctional or nonjunctional, can be context dependent and how this plasticity may be exploited clinically.

Cancer cell migration, as the principal element of tumor invasion, involves different cellular mechanisms. Various modes of cell migration including single and collective motions contribute to the invasion patterns. The competition between adhesive cell–cell and cell–matrix forces is a key factor that determines such patterns. In this paper, we study a distinct shell-type mode of tumor invasion observed in brain and breast tumors. In this mode, cells at the outer layer of the tumor collectively move away from the core and form a shell-type shape. Both the core and the shell sustain a sharp interface between cells and the surrounding matrix. To model the preserved interface, we adopted a Cahn–Hilliard-type free energy relation with the contribution of the interfacial stress. This nonconvex form of free energy allows for cells to remain together and preserve the tumor core via adhesive cell–cell forces while separating the core from the surrounding matrix across a continuous sharp interface. In addition, the motion of the shell was modeled using the chemotactic migration of cells in response to the gradient of nutrients. The associated fluxes of cells were implemented in a general form of balance law. A non-Michaelis–Menten kinetics model was adopted for the proliferation rate of cells. The flux of nutrients was also modeled using a simple diffusion equation. The comparison between the model predictions and experimental observations indicates the ability of the model to manifest the salient features of the invasion pattern.

Suite à l'expansion rapide de l'économie touristique après 2006, de nombreux diplômés universitaires et jeunes cadres urbains chinois ont migré temporairement vers la ville pour y exploiter des kezhan—des auberges à petite échelle. Cette thèse examine ce phénomène à travers le cadre théorique de la migration par choix de vie, en mettant en lumière les motivations uniques qui sous-tendent ces migrations. En explorant l'histoire de cette communauté à Lhassa et les expériences personnelles qui la composent, la thèse soutient que la migration par choix de vie vers Lhassa constitue une réponse au « projet de soi ». Elle offre une perspective nouvelle sur la manière dont ces jeunes individus naviguent entre identité, classe, genre et réalisation de soi dans la ville extraordinaire de Lhassa, au milieu des crises de la modernitéLhasa is the provincial capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. By exploring the history of this community in Lhasa and the individual experiences of lifestyle migrants, the thesis argues that lifestyle migration to Lhasa is a response to the 'project of the self.' Cette thèse étudie l’influence de la diversité des tactiques d’histoire de vie sur la dynamique des populations de deux salmonidés à migration partielle: le saumon Atlantique, Salmo salar et la truite commune, Salmo trutta. Ces deux espèces ont de fortes valeurs écologique et économique, mais les rôles respectifs des individus résidents et migrateurs sur la dynamique et la résilience des populations à des changements environnementaux demeurent méconnus. Nous avons abordé ces questions par des approches démographiques, génétiques et de modélisation. Nous avons démontré que la détermination de la tactique d’histoire de vie est en partie plastique et permet aux individus juvéniles de migrer en réponse à un changement de l’environnement. De plus, cette thèse démontre que la diversité des tactiques permet aux populations à migration partielle de bénéficier d’un changement favorable de l’environnement et de réduire l’effet d’un changement défavorable sur la dynamique de populationCes deux processus pourraient expliquer la plus forte résilience des populations à migration partielle face aux variations environnementales par rapport aux populations strictement résidentes ou migratrices. Toutefois, étant donné les différences de stratégies chez le saumon Atlantique et la truite commune, nos résultats suggèrent que la truite a une meilleure capacité de réponse aux changements environnementaux et un niveau de résilience plus élevé que le saumon AtlantiqueThis thesis investigates the influence of the tactic diversity on population dynamics in two partially migratory salmonids: Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar and brown trout, Salmo trutta. These two species have high ecological and economic values but the role of migrant and resident individuals on population dynamics and resilience to environmental changes is currently largely unknown. I undertook a multidisciplinary approach combining demographic, genetic, and modeling tools to address these issues in populations from France. I found that tactic determination is partly plastic as juveniles can respond to environmental variations by migrating. In addition, this thesis showed that tactics diversity in partially migratory populations enables a better use of favorable environmental conditions and buffer the effects of unfavorable conditions on their dynamics.These two processes might promote a higher resilience of partially migratory populations to environmental change, including anthropogenic effects, than in solely migratory or resident populations. Nonetheless, given the different strategies in Atlantic salmon and brown trout, my results suggested that brown trout should have better abilities to response to environmental changes and a higher level of resilience than Atlantic salmon

De nombreux jeunes antillais migrent chaque année en France métropolitaine pour étudier, souvent parce que leur filière d’étude est absente aux Antilles. Cette migration de leur île natale vers ce nouveau territoire constitue pour eux un véritable déracinement sur les plans géographique, climatique, social, familial, culturel, mode et rythme de vie. L’alimentation est un volet important de ces changements. Cette étude explore de façon privilégiée, à partir du recueil de la trajectoire de ces étudiants antillais, leur alimentation avant et après la migration, dans leur contexte socioculturel, afin d’y observer les mutations. Nous identifions aussi les influences de la migration, notamment des pratiques alimentaires post-migratoires, perçues par ces étudiants sur leur santé, et les besoins d’information alimentaire. Il s’agit d’une enquête qualitative par entretiens semi-directifs, pour mieux comprendre les comportements alimentaires de ces étudiants. Ce terrain souligne l’importance de considérer les dimensions sociale et culturelle de l’alimentation pour éviter les conseils de prévention standardisés et optimiser l’éducation alimentaireEvery year many young West Indians migrate to metropolitan France to study, often because their study courses are not available in the West Indies. This study is about a qualitative survey conducted by semi-structured interviews to obtain a better understanding of these students’ eating behaviors. A partir des résultats d'une enquête biographique (données longitudinales, au niveau micro-géographique) réalisée par l'INED en 1981, nous étudions les relations entre le comportement migratoire des individus (niveau de mobilité, distances parcourues) et leur cycle de vie familial et professionnel, en tenant compte des caractéristiques géographiques et des conditions socio-économiques de leur environnement. La notion de distance est au centre de cette étude qui intègre une approche géographique et une approche démographique du phénomène migratoire. La distribution très dissymétrique des distances parcourues par les individus au cours de leurs migrations résidentielles a été mise en évidence, et la relation entre le nombre de migrants et la distance parcourue a ainsi pu être modélisée. Le comportement migratoire varie fortement avec l’âge des individus et selon le contexte historique. Ces variations selon l’âge traduisent en réalité des relations complexes entre la mobilité et le cycle de vie familial et professionnel : les évènements familiaux et professionnels influencent et sont influencés par le comportement migratoire des individus. Les niveaux de mobilité et l'ampleur des migrations varient également significativement selon l'appartenance régionale des individus et selon la taille des unités urbaines ou rurales d'origine et de destination. Nous avons pu ainsi montrer l'intérêt d'une intégration des niveaux micro-géographique (celui des individus) et macro-géographique (celui des agrégats de population), ainsi que de la jonction entre des données longitudinales et des données transversales.

Fier de sa culture " quadrimillénaire ", le peuple viet provient d'une descendance divine, enfant demi-dieu d'une Fée céleste et d'un Dragon. La parenté vietnamienne nous permet de remonter jusqu'à son origine mythique, de Dê Minh à Hung Vuong, ancêtre fondateur de la Nation Viêt [de la période mythique à la protohistoire de la culture Phung Nguyên (troisième millénaire av. J. C. ) en passant par la culture Dong Son (850±120 av. J. C. )]. Comparée terminologiquement au système chinois, la parenté vietnamienne est une sœur jumelle, considérée par l'ethnologue Alfred Louis Kroeber (1876-1960) comme le " plus parfait qui soit sorti de l'imagination humaine ". L'immigration des vietnamiens en France s'est faite en trois étapes : d'abord les déportés de la période première-seconde guerres mondiales en tant que soldats ou main-d'œuvre pour les compagnies de navigation de la métropole ; puis le phénomène du " Du hoc " (faire des études en France), les étudiants venant en France pour fuir la guerre française (1945-1956) et ensuite la guerre américaine ; enfin l'arrivée massive de réfugiés " boat people " avec leur famille après 1975. Dans le Finistère, les Bretons se mobilisent, 41 associations se constituant pour accueillir et aider les réfugiés à s'installer dans la région. Le passage de l'identité ethno-culturelle vietnamienne à l'identité culturelle française sera vécu par les " boat people ", non comme une période de transition mais comme une métamorphose de l'identité reçue vers une identité originelle élaborée, élargie et enrichie. Le mode de vie des vietnamiens du Finistère se traduit, pour la première génération par une volonté explicite de conservation de la langue, des croyances ancestrales et des doctrines religieuse (culte des ancêtres, confucianisme, taoi͏̈sme, bouddhisme, caodai͏̈sme) lors des célébrations des fêtes du Têt, mariages et décès et la tradition culinaire.

Le phytopathogène Agrobacterium tumefaciens est l'agent causal de la maladie appelée galle du collet, et est capable d'infecter plus de 90 familles de plantes dicotylédones. Cette ∝-protéobactérie appartient à la famille Rhizobiaceae. A. tumefaciens est un complexe de différentes espèces regroupées en 10 génomovars (G1 à G8 et G13). A. tumefaciens C58 appartient au groupe du G8. Son génome est constitué de 4 réplicons : 1 chromosome circulaire, 1 chromosome linéaire et des 2 plasmides dispensables : pAt (pour A.tumefaciens) et pTi (pour Tumor inducing, qui est requis pour la virulence). Pour explorer de nouveaux aspects du mode de vie d’A. tumefaciens, et en particulier l'interaction entre la bactérie et sa plante hôte, deux approches différentes ont été utilisées pour identifier, caractériser et analyser les gènes qui pourraient jouer un rôle dans l'adaptation des bactéries à la tumeur. Une expérience de l'évolution par des passages en série de trois souches différentes de l'agent pathogène sur la plante hôte Solanum lycopersicum a été effectuée afin de clarifier la dynamique évolutive du génome au cours de l'infection. Parallèlement, une étude de différents transcriptomes (in planta et in vitro) a été réalisée et étudiée pour élucider des gènes bactériens candidats impliqués dans l'interaction de la bactérie avec la plante et divers composés produits dans la tumeur. In parallel, a study of different transcriptomes (in planta and in vitro) was performed and studied to elucidate bacterial candidate genes involved in the interaction of the bacteria with the plant and various compounds produced in the tumor. Les bactéries intracellulaires Wolbachia ont développé une vaste gamme d’interactions symbiotiques, du parasitisme reproductif au mutualisme chez les arthropodes terrestres et les nématodes filaires, devenant ainsi les endosymbiotes les plus répandus sur terre. Bien qu’elles se développent lentement dans les cultures cellulaires d’insectes pour lesquelles les marqueurs sont limités et qu’elles ne sont génétiquement pas manipulables, il existe un intéret croissant de déchiffrer leur mode de vie intracellulaire pour 2 raisons. Premièrement, Wolbachia intervient dans le développement et la transmission des arbovirus et deuxièmement, les filarioses lymphatiques sont traitables grâce à la susceptibilité des Wolbachia qui infectent les nématodes filaires aux antibiotiques. Au début de ce projet, j’ai infecté 2 lignées cellulaires de Drosophila melanogaster qui sont transcriptomiquement divergentes par une même souche de Wolbachia pouvant naturellement infecter Drosophila melanogaster. J’ai utilisé ces 2 lignées cellulaires qui sont différentiellement permissive à l’infection pour explorer l’interaction de Wolbachia avec le réticulum endoplasmique. Les observations par microscopie à fluorescence en temps réel et par microscopie électronique prouvent que cet organite est une source de membranes pour Wolbachia et possiblement, une source de nutriments. Pourtant, les analyses d’expression génique et les approches d’immunofluorescence démontrent que Wolbachia n’induit ni un stress au niveau du réticulum endoplasmique ni une protéolyse via la voie de signalisation ERAD suggérant dès lors, que Wolbachia subvertissent d’autres mécanismes pour assurer leur besoin en acides aminés. Au cours de ce projet, j’ai commencé à mettre en place une technique pour transformer Wolbachia par biolistique. La validation de cette technique de transformation a ouvert la voie vers l’optimisation de la procédure de sélection des transformants pour enfin pouvoir génétiquement manipuler WolbachiaThe intracellular bacteria Wolbachia have developed a wide range of symbiotic interactions, from being opportunistic reproductive parasites to mutualists with terrestrial arthropods and filarial nematode species, making them the most common endosymbionts on earth. The discovery that they interfere with arboviruses development and transmission by mosquito vectors and that filarial diseases can be cured by targeting Wolbachia, have created a strong interest in deciphering the mechanisms underlying their intracellular lifestyle. However, being obligate intracellular endosymbionts, Wolbachia remain genetically intractable. They grow slowly in insect cell cultures, for which markers are limited. Despite these obstacles, and to limit cell line-specific phenotypes, I chose to infect 2 Drosophila melanogaster cell lines presenting different sets of expressed genes, with a unique Wolbachia strain, naturally hosted by Drosophila melanogaster. Using these 2 cell lines that are differently permissive to the infection, I explored the interaction of Wolbachia with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Through fluorescence time-lapse confocal and electron microscopy observations, I provide strong evidence that this organelle is the source of membrane for Wolbachia, and possibly a source of nutrients. However, gene expression analyses and immunofluorescence approaches demonstrate that Wolbachia do not induce ER stress nor an increased ERAD- induced proteolysis, suggesting; unlike previously reported, that Wolbachia salvage amino acids by other subversion mechanisms. Additionally, I pioneered biolistic bombardement of Wolbachia-infected cells and the validation of this transformation technique has paved the way towards optimization of transformant selection steps and ultimately to the genetic engineering of Wolbachia

Vieillir immigré est devenu une situation commune à un nombre grandissant de personnes en France. En 2015, près d’1,5 million de personnes immigrées étaient âgées de 60 ans et plus. La constante augmentation du nombre d’immigrés âgés constitue une question sociale et politique en France, ce qui a été confirmé tant par les récents travaux de l’Assemblée nationale que par l’avancée des connaissances scientifiques. Le nombre de travaux produits sur des territoires différents, là où les migrants âgés sont plus ou moins présents démographiquement reste encore aujourd’hui restreint. Face à ce constat, l’objectif de cette thèse par articles est de proposer une lecture territoriale et gérontologique de la vieillesse en migration. Deux terrains d’étude ont été retenus dans le cadre du projet doctoral (premièrement, les villes d’Angers et de Cholet en Maine-et-Loire et deuxièmement, la Ville de Montreuil en Seine-Saint-Denis). Les terrains de recherche ont été l’occasion d’analyser les conditions de vieillissement des personnes immigrées dans des contextes spatiaux différents (analyse des données territoriales et du discours des acteurs médico-sociaux, associatifs et politiques intervenants auprès des immigrés vieillissants). Dans la continuité, une analyse des récits biographiques d’un échantillon de migrants âgés résidant en Maine-et-Loire a été effectuée pou mettre en exergue les enjeux sociaux et spatiaux structurant les expériences de vieillissement des immigrés. In France, the constant increase in the number of elderly immigrants represents a social and political issue, a fact confirmed by the recent works of the national assembly as well as by the development of scientific research. Nonetheless, the diversity of studies dealing with different territories inhabited by elderly immigrants remains limited. Consequently, this thesis (structured around several scientific articles) aims at proposing a representation of the “migrating elderly”, articulating a territorial and gerontological approach. Two different territories were taken into consideration: Angers andCholet (Maine-et-Loire), and Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis).This selection provided the opportunity to analyse the aging conditions of migrating population which evolve according to different spatial contexts. In this study, we considered territorial data, medico-social accounts, as well as the work of associations and political interventions to elderly immigrants.In addition, biographical facts and stories from as ample of elderly migrants in Maine-et-Loire were analysed to highlight the political and social issues that structure the aging conditions of immigrants.The result of this work proves that it is still essentia lto take into account the heterogeneity of these populations. Face à la crise urbaine actuelle, conséquence en partie de l'indifférence manifestée par les édiles a l'égard des spécificités locales des questions spatiales, sociales, économiques et écologiques, des modèles d'appropriation de l'espace sont apparus qui doivent être remis en question dans le contexte de la problématique du logement et de l'habitat urbain. Nous avons centré notre étude sur une des modalités du mode de vie en milieu urbain de Rio, précisément celle issue des favelas cariocas, où nous avons cherché à identifier les formes de perception et de conception de ces espaces à travers les pratiques de leurs protagonistes. Notre thèse a été d'aller chercher dans la dynamique socio-spatiale de la favela, tout au long de son processus, ce qu'elle a engendre de plus légitime: cette pluralité qui répond, en la niant, à l'adoption indiscriminée des principes de la modernité. Ce travail propose, à travers une approche compréhensive du quotidien de ces espaces, que l'emploi du terme favela doive être réservé a un phénomène définitif et non provisoire, et qui correspond au lieu propre d'un besoin; des conditions favorables à la manifestation de la socialité y sont nécessaires; et surtout une façon de vivre le quotidien qui représente une production de culture ou une alternative au mode de vie en milieu urbain. Nous souhaitons introduire ici une nouvelle perspective d'analyse des dynamiques socio-spatiales, dont le but est d'intégrer celles-ci au tissu urbain sans désintégrer les principes qui les ont constituées. La présente recherche propose quelques apports théoriques qui n'épuisent certes pas la question urbaine, mais qui lui fournissent certains éléments susceptibles a notre avis de développements ultérieurs, visant d'autres constructions générales ou partielles de la dynamique socio-spatiale des fragments de la ville.

AbstractIrregular migration is a worldwide phenomenon. Each country develops its vision and its actions generally without knowing either the magnitude or the depth of irregular migrations stock and flows. Each actor tries to develop its specific contribution to picture its complexity in the Mediterranean region, the world deadliest zone for migrants. We develop a global method to measure the process of irregular maritime migration in twelve steps from North Africa to Europe. Such a vision is a missing link in the governance of irregular migrations. The first sequence (entry) has three steps. Migration begins with the intention to leave. Then the prospects legitimize the move. Finally, the departure is decided. The final sequence (exit) has three options: installation, return to the country of origin or a new departure. Between these two sequences, we design the “black box” on the sea route, with six steps.This macroscopic view is based on field studies and data produced since this millennium particularly on harga from Maghreb Countries (Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia).Each country can thus find its function in sharing information, hence contributing to the implementation of the first goal of the UN global compact for regular migration.

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the broad methodological and philosophical underpinnings of the Bayesian model-based approach to studying migration. Starting from reflections on the uncertainty and complexity in demography and, in particular, migration studies, the focus moves to the shifting role of formal modelling, from merely describing, to predicting and explaining population processes. Of particular importance are the gaps in understanding asylum migration flows, which are some of the least predictable while at the same time most consequential forms of human mobility. The well-recognised theoretical void of demography as a discipline does not help, especially given the lack of empirical micro-foundations in formal modelling. Here, we analyse possible solutions to theoretical shortcomings of demography and migration studies from the point of view of the philosophy of science, looking at the inductive, deductive and abductive approaches to scientific reasoning. In that spirit, the final section introduces and extends a research programme of model-based demography.

AbstractThe local turn in migration studies has drawn attention to the local level for understanding migration and migration-related diversities (Zapata-Barrero et al., 2017). This book contributes to this turn by revealing a plurality of urban diversities and exploring the factors that contribute to this plurality. Cities of migration come in various types, reflecting different diversity configurations, different locally situated inequalities, and different local approaches. There is no reason for trying to understand the dynamics of migration-related diversity in Paris and Plauen or in Rotterdam and Rouen in similar terms. These cities have very different diversity configurations, migration histories, opportunity structures and political institutional settings. Rather than defining these cities in terms of one urban model our effort is to grasp and understand the complexity of urban diversities. We see this as an important step towards a more differentiated view of urban diversities, and also a insight into the challenges that form in different cities and a better understanding of how and why cities choose different approaches towards governance of migration and diversity. Where Ingolstadt may need an approach very much tailored to the legacy of industrial migration and urban segregation, Hilversum may need an approach that is focused on the whole local population and on the role of diversity across policy sectors and domains.

Political dynamics in the European Union since 2015 have been strongly marked by the refugee or migrant crisis which has polarized the political arena and triggered an intense political debate which has produced various theses on the causes, nature and consequences of this crisis. In this contribution we substantiate the need for a new approach to modeling of migrations and present the state of our research and development of an international migrations flow model focused on the Balkans. The approach used represents the integration of knowledge and findings from the social sciences and natural sciences which in our view represents an optimal framework for understanding migration processes. We argue that complex social phenomena, such as migration, are in themselves interdisciplinary problems, requiring a multidisciplinary approach and the integration of all relevant influencing factors in the decisions of migrants. This approach will allow modeling of migration flows based on a realistic geopolitical model and the modeling of decisionmaking processes of individuals and groups in migration processes.

Electroplated copper thin films have started to be applied to not only interconnections in printed wiring boards, but also thin film interconnections and TSV (Through Silicon Via) in semiconductor devices because of its low electric resistivity and high thermal conductivity. Thus, the electrical reliability of the electroplated copper interconnections was investigated experimentally. Self-made electroplated copper thin film interconnections were used for the evaluation. Electroplating conditions are as follows. The thin film interconnections were made by damascene process for electromigration tests. The applied current density during the test was varied from 1 MA/cm2 to 10 MA/cm2. Abrupt fracture caused by the local fusion was often observed in the as-electroplated interconnections within a few hours during the test. Since there were a lot of porous grain boundaries in the as-electroplated thin films, the local high Joule heating should have caused the fusion at one of the porous grain boundaries. Actually, it was confirmed that the failure rate increased linearly with the square of the amplitude of the applied current density. However, the diffusion of copper atoms caused by electromigration was enhanced significantly when the film was annealed at 400°C. Many voids and hillocks were observed on their surfaces. This change of the fracture mode clearly indicates the improvement of the crystallographic quality of the annealed film. It was also observed that the stress-induced migration was activated substantially in the annealed film. Large voids and hillocks grew during the custody of the film even at room temperature without any application of current. This stress-induced migration was caused by the increase of residual tensile stress of about 200 MPa in the annealed film. It was also found that sulfur atoms segregated in the grown hillocks, though no sulfur atoms were found by EDX in the initial as-electroplated interconnections or other area in the annealed thin film interconnections. Thus, the hillock formation in the annealed interconnections was enhanced by the segregation of sulfur atoms. These sulfur atoms should have been introduced into the electroplated films during electroplating. Therefore, it is very important to control the micro texture, the residual stress and the concentration of sulfur in the electroplated copper thin film interconnections to assure the stable life, in other words, to eliminate their sudden brittle fracture and time-dependent degradation caused by the residual stress in the thin film interconnections.

Ideological changes in industrial approaches require greater ecological thinking. Regarding plastics, the integration of plastic waste into the circular economy arises from the urgent need to design and develop sustainable alternatives. The primary objective of a recycling process is to ensure that the quality of recycled plastics consistently matches that of the original product. Regional authorities and regulations require the assessment and prevention of the potential safety hazards of possible contaminants in recycling streams, recycling processes, and recycling technologies. The specific limits on migrating substances are difficult to achieve through recycling, especially in food packaging. Since food packaging accounts for the largest global share of plastic use, alternative approaches for assessing the value of recyclates as food contact materials need to be considered. One possible way to achieve this goal is barrier development via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to potentially prevent migration of contamination and barrier function as food contact materials. To efficiently evaluate migrations and barrier efficiencies, a novel contamination approach for virgin materials is introduced to simulate model recyclates. Achieving higher concentrations inside a virgin polypropylene matrix simplifies the analytical approaches. Further, an analysis chain regarding migration evaluation via gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry and barrier developments are shown.

Diversifiées, fortes et résilientes, les familles des militaires et des vétérans au Canada sont la fierté de notre pays. Les membres de ces familles assument des responsabilités importantes dans leurs milieux de travail, leurs collectivités et pour leur pays, et y entretiennent des relations enrichissantes. La « vie militaire » est souvent caractérisée par la mobilité, l’éloignement et le risque de maladie, de blessure ou de mort. La « littératie militaire » favorise la compréhension des professionnels et des intervenants relativement aux réalités uniques des membres des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC), des vétérans et de leur famille, et de ce qui caractérise leur mode de vie. Afin d’accroître notre compréhension de ces familles et de leur réalité, l’Institut Vanier de la famille met en relief de nouvelles données et des travaux de recherche1 sur les familles des militaires et des vétérans au Canada en présentant une mise à jour de 2018 du document Coup d’œil sur les familles des militaires et des vétérans au Canada.

Les granites peralumineux sont reconnus à l'échelle mondiale comme le produit magmatique final des cratons archéens. Cependant, leur durée, les conditions thermiques de leur mise en place, leur séquence de cristallisation, ainsi que les liens avec l'évolution tectonométamorphique des roches encaissantes et les systèmes minéralisés en métaux précieux, de base, et rares sont peu connus. Le Batholite de Decelles (c. 2670-2620 Ma) exposé dans le sud-est du craton du Supérieur au Québec, Canada est l'un des plus volumineux de la région, offrant une opportunité unique dmp;gt;'améliorer notre compréhension des conditions thermiques et de la mobilité des magmas et des fluides dans la croûte moyenne et supérieure. Nous présentons des nouvelles datations Lu-Hf et des cartes dmp;gt;'éléments traces sur grenat de trois échantillons de granite du Batholite de Decelles. Les nouvelles dates de 2668 ± 4 Ma, 2663 ± 5 Ma, 2656 ± 7 Ma sont indifférenciables (considérant les incertitudes) des dates Lu-Hf sur grenat et U-Pb sur monazite des unités métasédimentaires encaissantes. La cartographie des éléments traces in situ par LA-ICP-MS révèle une zonation compositionnelle systématique. Les grenats présentent un cur avec une zonation oscillatoire concentrique en Li, P, Sc, Ti, Y, Zr, REE, Hf, Th et U; et une surcroissance marquée par des concentrations relativement élevées en MREE, HREE et V, et de faibles concentrations en Li, Ti, P, Sm, Zr, Hf et U par rapport aux curs. Les résultats indiquent une origine magmatique des grenats par opposition aux grenats métamorphiques de la source avec une histoire de cristallisation complexe. Le contenu en éléments traces du grenat semble être contrôlé par des variations cinétiques de croissance et de diffusion à l'interface grenat-matrice, ainsi que par la cristallisation de phases majeures et accessoires telles que la muscovite, la monazite, l'apatite et le zircon. Dans l'ensemble, le grenat du Batholite de Decelles date le début de la cristallisation magmatique et son contenu en éléments traces enregistre son histoire complète. Les archives géochronologiques régionales indiquent une évolution commune des niveaux de croûte moyenne et supérieure avec un refroidissement progressif entre c. 2640 et c. 2620 Ma, associé à la migration et au refroidissement de fluides minéralisateurs.

Depuis plus de cinquante ans, l’Institut Vanier de la famille s’emploie à observer, à étudier et à analyser les tendances touchant les familles et la vie de famille au Canada. Dès la première heure, le constat a toujours été sans équivoque : la réalité des familles est à visages multiples, puisque leur diversité n’a d’égal que celle des gens qui les composent. Et ce fut toujours le cas, peu importe que l’on s’intéresse aux familles du point de vue de leur structure, de leur identité familiale, de leur mode de cohabitation, de leur style de vie et de leurs réalités familiales, ou encore que l’on insiste sur les caractéristiques individuelles des membres de la famille, comme leurs antécédents ethnoculturels, leur statut d’immigrant, leur orientation sexuelle ou leurs aptitudes particulières. En misant sur notre récente fiche infographique intitulée La diversité familiale au Canada (mise à jour au Recensement de 2016), notre nouvelle parution dans la série Coup d’œil sur les statistiques propose un portrait élargi et plus détaillé des familles modernes au Canada, et de certaines tendances qui contribuent à définir notre paysage familial dynamique et en constante évolution. À partir de notre analyse des données et des tendances actuelles, cet aperçu montre que la diversité demeure l’une des caractéristiques centrales de la vie familiale, qu’il s’agisse des familles d’hier et d’aujourd’hui ou de celles des générations à venir. Et cette réalité alimente le dynamisme de la société canadienne en pleine évolution.

U.S. foreign policy in the Americas has undergone many changes between the Donald J. Trump administration (2017-2021) and the Joe Biden administration (2021-2025). The election offers a chance to the winner – either Vice President Harris (a Democrat) or former President Trump (a Republican) – to update U.S. foreign policy in the region. If Harris wins, she will likely initially continue Biden’s strategy of broad engagement and multilateralism to address shared challenges, such as promoting democracy, managing migration, and advancing economic development, while adjusting it over time to more closely align with her vision and priorities. If Trump wins, he is likely to return to his past foreign policy nationalism, prioritizing bilateral relations over multilateralism, utilizing confrontation and coercion to advance his objectives, and focusing extensively on combating irregular migration and punishing the undemocratic outliers of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Yet regardless of who wins, the U.S. government should prioritize three issues: Haiti and Venezuela, enhancing hemispheric security, and pursuing a more robust trade and investment policy in the region.

La diversité fait partie intégrante de la Suisse: 26 cantons, 4 langues nationales et une multitude de cultures et de modes de vie coexistent et se côtoient. Mais à quel point l’environnement social de la population en Suisse est-il varié et panaché? Pour répondre à cette question, le Pour-cent culturel Migros a chargé l’Institut Gottlieb Duttweiler (GDI) de réaliser une étude représentative. Les caractéristiques analysées reposent sur l’article 8 de la Constitution fédérale relatif à l’égalité des droits et à la non-discrimination: l’origine, le sexe, l’âge, la langue, la situation sociale, le mode de vie, les convictions religieuses, philosophiques et politiques ainsi que les handicaps physiques, mentaux ou psychiques. Âge, formation et finances: des sujets qui divisent la population Les résultats de l’enquête dans toutes les régions du pays montrent à quel point les cercles de connaissances sont dépourvus de mixité et de diversité. Les personnes ayant des niveaux d’éducation différents ont peu de points de contact. Parmi les personnes fortunées, bien plus de la moitié n’ont pas ou peu de contacts avec des personnes modestes. Ce manque de mixité se retrouve également dans les tranches d’âge. Quant à la diversité des convictions politiques au sein du cercle de connaissances, elle est minime. De plus, la majorité des personnes vivant en Suisse n’a aucun contact avec d’autres cultures. La Suisse manque d’opportunités de rencontre La raison du manque de contact entre les groupes de population est le manque de points communs et l’absence d’opportunités de rencontre. En moyenne, 58,2 % des personnes interrogées sont d’accord pour dire que certaines activités telles que l’adhésion à une association, des cours, un engagement sociétal, des événements culturels ou des activités de loisirs ont permis de diversifier leur cercle de connaissances. La population suisse souhaite plus de diversité Les personnes qui sont plus souvent en contact avec différents groupes ont une attitude plus positive envers ces groupes. Selon l’enquête, 56% des participant-es pensent, du moins en partie, qu’une communauté peut supporter de grandes différences, par analogie avec les groupes interrogés. De plus, 69% estiment que la diversité des perspectives et des expériences de vie permet de prendre de meilleures décisions.

This report offers a systematic analysis of Slovenian political parties in online campaigning during the 2024 EP elections. It draws on a dataset of political parties and their online representations, selected from official party websites and dominant social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, in May 2024. The results show that Slovenian parties’ communication during the 2024 EP campaign was quite self-referential, accompanied by images of the candidates, indicating a high degree of personalization of politics. Moreover, the results show the “non-European orientation” of the campaign, as domestic issues dominated the parties’ social media profiles and websites. Furthermore, the content analysis of the parties’ websites revealed five issues where some cross-party differences in attitudes were observed: 1) agreement in party attitudes towards the environment; 2) on Ukraine and Palestine, parties on the right took different positions; 3) the centre-left coalition supported the government’s domestic policy the most; 4) right-wing actors tended to frame migration and minority rights in a restrictive way; actors with a left-wing orientation took a more humanitarian approach; and 5) left-wing actors were most tolerant vis-à-vis gender and reproductive rights. The results, therefore, imply a clear distinction between Slovenian parties of the left and right during the 2024 EP campaign.

Dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19, la pratique du télétravail s’est répandue partout sur la planète. Cette étude internationale sur le télétravail en contexte de pandémie, dirigée par Tania Saba, professeure titulaire à l’École de relations industrielles, Université de Montréal et Titulaire de la Chaire BMO en diversité et gouvernance, a permis d’évaluer la pratique du télétravail, ses bénéfices et inconvénients ainsi que le niveau d’adaptation des travailleurs canadiens au travail à domicile, et ce, selon plusieurs caractéristiques et en comparaison avec leurs pairs en France, en Australie et aux États-Unis. Cette étude révèle qu’au Québec l’adoption du télétravail ainsi que l’adaptation à ce nouveau mode de vie sont positivement influencées par la pratique et avec le temps. Cette étude a été réalisée par la Chaire BMO – Diversité et gouvernance avec le soutien de l’Observatoire international sur les impacts sociétaux de l’IA et du numérique (OBVIA) dans le cadre des travaux sur les effets des systèmes d’intelligence artificielle et des outils numériques déployés pour lutter contre la propagation de la COVID-19 sur les sociétés soutenues par les Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).
