Résumé :
This paper investigates a surprising interpretational asymmetry in modal-negation sequences in Norwegian: When the negation word follows the subject, the sentence is ambiguous with respect to the relative scopes of the negation and the modal. When negation precedes the subject, however, the negation unambiguously takes scope over the modal. I argue that this asymmetry can be accounted for by assuming that verb raising has semantic implications; contrary to Chomsky (2001a). Modal-negation sequences in subordinate clauses do not display the same asymmetry, which supports the hypothesis that verb

We investigate the properties of a modal algebra, more specifically, a non-distributive lattice with operators via Galois connections. Pairs of Galois are very common in mathematical environments, and, in this article, they appear as unary operators in lattices even without the distributivity. In a previous paper, Castiglioni and Ertola-Biraben studied the meet-complemented lattices with two modal operators for necessary □ and possible ◊. Morphological operators are generalized to lattices as adjunction pairs (Serra, 1984; Ronse, 1990; Heijmans and Ronse, 1990; Heijmans, 1994). In particular, morphology for set lattices is applied to analyze logics through Kripke semantics (Bloch, 2002; Fujio and Bloch, 2004; Fujio, 2006). For example, a pair of morphological operators as an adjunction gives rise to a temporalization of normal modal logic (Fujio and Bloch, 2004; Fujio, 2006). Also, constructions of models for intuitionistic logic or linear logics can be described in terms of morphological interior and/or closure operators (Fuji

If adjunctions are so important in mathematics, then perhaps they will isolate concepts of some importance in the empirical sciences. But the applications of adjunctions have been hampered by an overly restrictive formulation that avoids heteromorphisms or hets. By reformulating an adjunction using hets, it is split into two parts, a left and a right semiadjunction. Semiadjunctions (essentially a for

Résumé :
This paper provides an abstract definition of a class of logics, called diagrammatic logics, together with a definition of morphisms and 2-morphisms between them. The definition of the 2-category of diagrammatic logics relies on category theory, mainly on adjunction, categories of fractions and limit sketches. This framework is applied to the formalisation of a parameterisation process. This process, which consists of adding a formal parameter to some operations in a given specification, is presented as a morphism of logics. Then the parameter passing process for recovering a model of the give

Rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD) is a phase of bipolar disorder defined by the presence of ≥ 4 mood episodes in a year. It is a common phenomenon characterized by greater severity, a predominance of depression, higher levels of disability, and poorer overall outcomes. It is resistant to treatment by conventional pharmacotherapy. The existing literature underlines the scarcity of evidence and the gaps in knowledge about the optimal treatment strategies for RCBD. However, most reviews have considered only pharmacological treatment options for RCBD. Given the treatment-refractory nature of R

Our previous work has shown that topical thymosin beta 4 (Tβ4) as an adjunct to ciprofloxacin treatment reduces inflammatory mediators and inflammatory cell infiltrates (neutrophils/PMN and macrophages/MΦ) while enhancing bacterial killing and wound healing pathway activation in an experimental model of P. aeruginosa-induced keratitis. This study aimed to mechanistically examine how Tβ4 influences MΦ function in particular, leading to reduced inflammation and enhanced host defense following P. aeruginosa-induced infection of the cornea. Introduction: Bacterial meningitis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Adjunctive corticosteroid therapy, particularly dexamethasone, has shown promise in reducing inflammation and improving outcomes. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dexamethasone compared to placebo or other adjunctive therapies in pediatric bacterial meningitis. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted from January 2013 to October 2024. Parkinson's disease (PD), a prevalent neurological disorder, is marked by the degeneration of dopamineproducing neurons. In this study, a Wistar rat model of PD induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) was used to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of an ethanolic extract of Citrullus colocynthis. The rats were injected with 6-OHDA using a Hamilton syringe and stereotaxic equipment to mimic Parkinsonism. After a 30-day post-surgery survival period, the rats received an oral dose of 200 mg/kg of the Citrullus colocynthis extract, which was prepared using a Soxhlet device with a 70:3

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has been shown to identify positive breast cancer more accurately in women with dense breasts, but no study has estimated the cost-effectiveness of this screening mode under a notification requirement. Methods: Taking the perspective of a healthcare system, we estimated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of providing DBT as an alternative to mammography for 40-year old women. M

Despite the commonality of BV, standard-of-care antibiotics provide limited control of recurrent BV episodes and development of new biotherapies is limited by the lack of controlled models needed to evaluate new dosing and treatment regimens. ABSTRACT While a time-kill methodology noted no appreciable improvement in bactericidal activity with the addition of azithromycin (AZM) to a ceftazidime (CAZ) regimen, data from the murine pneumonia model showed that the addition of AZM significantly improved survival compared to treatment with CAZ alone. These data suggest that AZM might be a useful adjunctive therapy in the management of pneumonia resulting from mucoid isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
