The theme of this thesis is suicide mortality in its various aspects, seen from an international, European perspective. It questions the existence of social (structural) concomitants to suicide mortality and investigates attitudes towards and legislation concerning suicide, as well as some historical processes pertaining to their development. Paper 1 replicates an authoritative study of the "correlates of suicide" on a national level in European countries. AbstractThis chapter puts the relationship between judicial governance and democratic quality in context. Using modernization theory the chapter hypothesises that the negative correlation found earlier in this book between the existence of judicial councils and democratic quality is a result of an omitted variable bias: that omitted variable is modernization. Using robust regressions, the chapter shows that, in general, variations in the design of judicial governance have no significant effect on the quality of democracy in European countries.

The content of this article formulates questions on the wide reform processes that the Republic of Moldova has gone through in the context of its reform and modernization initiatives. The questions addressed outline some processes and reasons that reveal potential directions of analysis and propose solutions in order to maintain progress towards good governance, protection of the individual, and efficiency of law. In this context, the law is seen as an instrument capable of contributing to socio-political stability and responding to the challenges of digitization and globalization.
