Texte intégral"Pizza - an oral history. Tales and experiences from the Swedish pizza business." In this essay, I take a closer look at the Swedish pizza business and try to figure out the roots of some the peculiarities you can encounter at a pizzeria in Sweden. How can it be that almost everywhere you go, you’re able to find an Italian themed pizzeria, run by an immigrant from the middle east, where you can buy a pizza with kebab meat and Béarnaise sauce surrounded by pictures of Marlon Brando and workers in New York? The purpose of the essay is to put this phenomenon within a larger Swedish social and cultural historical context. Through interviews with three different immigrant entrepreneurs in the pizza business in Sweden, I get to share their stories and experiences of how they first got into the business as well as how the see the business from within. They all have in common that their different social networks have played a big role regarding their entry in the business. They also describe a business that sometimes can be really tough with lots of stress and tight financial margins. Even though their respective entrances into the business as well as their experiences from the business differ from each other we can see a pattern where alternative career opportunities have been scarce which was a contributing factor to them ending up in the pizza business. Other experiences similar to theirs can also be found when looking at the earlier research, which in combination with the interviews in this essay, gives a better understanding of why so many immigrants work in the pizza business. Regarding the question why the Swedish pizza business has some of its distinguished features. The results combined with prior research hint at an explanation in two parts. First there are specific historical circumstances such as Italian labor immigration to Sweden in the 40s and 50s as well as low unemployment, initially opening up opportunities for the business to grow and shaping its organizational structure. However, the changing situation in the labor market during the 90s with higher unemployment made it harder, especially for immigrants, to find other kinds of work. As a result, new groups of immigrants, most notably from the middle east, ended up in the business, shaping it into what it is today.

Texte intégralStudents’ empathic comprehension and ability to act against oppression and racism are intimately related to the insight which can be acquired from watching the testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The lesson that can be learned from the Holocaust gives a solid support in the shaping of a cultural norm for educational and pedagogical purpose, this norm is based on the fundamental moral values of society: democracy, human rights, tolerance, patience and resistance towards racism and totalitarian ideologies. This study has a theoretically based perspective and result in a concrete suggestion of how one might carry on the subject matter of the testimonies from Holocaust survivors into the future. The base of the theoretical discussion employs a hermeneutical perspective to examine the usefulness, trustworthiness and significance of oral history as a source. This hermeneutical perspective is also utilized in analyzing how the testimonies can be used to develop an empathic understanding out of a theoretical model. The essay discusses the hardship of testifying and the difficulties that surface in the communication between speaker and interlocutor. Ultimately the essay theorizes concerning the use of testimonies conveyed through motion pictures and how these should be analyzed to achieve empathic comprehension.

Texte intégralThe purpose of this essay is to examine how the changes in the Swedish gymnasium since the the beginning of the 1970-thies have affected the professional life of one common teacher. The questions at issue are; Which changes have occured in the Swedish gymnaisum since the beginning of the 1970-thies? How has these changes affected the professional life of one common teacher? I have used both an oral source and and written sources in order to attain my pourpouse and answer my questions. The chapter concerning theories regarding the subject of this essay contains an investigation performed by the Arbetslivsinstitut, Nära gränssen, and concepts such as oral history and life history. The Changes in the Swedish gymnasium serves as background material. The chapter named Conclusions contains a discussion concerning what makes and influences the work of a teacher. It is obvious that the interaction between the authorothies and theachers and between teacher and students is of great significance.

Texte intégralThis study deals with football hooliganism in Sweden from a historical perspective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of football hooliganism change and development in Sweden between the 1990s and 2012 and to compare my informers’ tales with previous research on the subject. In the survey, I want to explain what lies behind hooliganism development and how it has influenced the Swedish football culture. In the study i have used a qualitative approach trough interviews to collect empirical data to study and to answer my questions. I have implemented and set out evidence from four different interviews. To get interesting responses to the survey, I wanted to interview people who moved in hooligan circles as seen hooliganism developments closely and with own eyes. The choice of informants fell on two ordinary football fans, a football hooligan and a supporter police. By this selection I got responses from three different perspectives, a hooligan, a supporter police and two supporters. In the survey I also used the Robert Connells hegemonic masculinity theory. The theory has helped me to understand and connect many of the elements in the core of hooliganism emergence. The survey shows that there has been a very big change on the Swedish football hooliganism. Above all the emergence of football firms, which is the biggest change, large parts of hooliganism has also become more organized. My study also highlights that hooliganism has become increasingly visible in recent years. Hooliganism is often found in the stadiums in the form of pyrotechnics, vandalism, fights and riots, which gives a negative impact on football culture. But the development and creation of football firms has also meant that large parts of hooliganism has moved outside the stadiums and often take place far away from the public. In this way football hooliganism therefore also become a major social problem that is causing personal and property damage for large sums of money.

Texte intégralIn the late 19th century, many western European countries formed tuberculosis programs consisting of special care and preventive measures. I have examined an orphanage that in 1930 started to receive children of the urban poor, in order to isolate them from their contagious parents. In the 1950s the admission became broader as the tuberculosis decreased. However, the institution’s care ideology - open air activities and nutritional treatments in a home-like and healthy environment - was sustained. My understanding of everyday life at this institution has been altered by the use of oral history. The nine informants told me about punishments and other characteristics of total institutions, but also how they resisted this. To regard the orphanage only as a means of social control became impossible when listening to memories of fellowship and strong traditions. Encountering former residents of the orpanage also made me experiment with academic writing; this thesis is formulated as a letter.

Texte intégralIn Unpropertied Stories: The Social Production of History in the Landless’ Movement (MST) I explore stories about the past with origin in the brazilian social movement o movimento dos trabalhadores rurais sem terra (the landless rural workers’ movement). The purpose of the thesis is to enhance the understanding for how narratives about the past can be used in social change. The starting point for the thesis is a question about how the past becomes a resource for the ongoing struggle and organisation that the MST performs. This question is elaborated with perspectives from oral history and narrative analysis. Material is collected from the movie Raiz forte (in english “Strong Roots”), A história da luta pela terra e o MST which is common and well spread among the participants of the movement, and personal narratives from three of the movement’s participants. The result of the thesis is that narratives about the past becomes resourceful for social change because they are told with a narrative structure that is inclusive, activating, and that invites the landless to become story tellers of their own making. Further important is the way in which the stories are being told and lis- tened to, that is in the movement’s base which is a context dominated by oral exchange and participatory democracy.

Texte intégralThe purpose of this essay has been to explore Alexander the Great from two different perspectives in Greece. The village Proti Serron represents the local area and the national area named Macedonia represents the second perspective. Oral history has been used as a method in addition to literature and trips to museums and archaeological places.
As a guideline for the essay and its contents a stereotyped schedule has been created. This schedule is presented below, and it is also possible to read it backwards.
The villagers who identify themselves with Alexander the Great from their local area Proti Serron which is a part of the national area named Macedonia.
This study proves that the villagers who has been interviewed, identify themselves with the place they live in as well as its history and that they feel that it is their duty to pass this knowledge forward. Alexander the Great is described as intelligent, humble, a man of strength and courage as well as a strategist and sovereign. This picture of the former king is also valid in the national area of Macedonia.

Texte intégralAbstract
How do we remember? What do we remember? How does the memory change over time? These are the main questions in this essay.
Five persons, who have lived or are still living in the old parish Rystad, situated seven kilometers from the town Linkoping south of Lake Roxen, have participated in interviews. They have been given the possibility to present their oral history which has been recorded and later transmitted to texture. The participants represent different social backgrounds and professions and they were born between the years 1920 – 1936. They describe their childhood and youth in bright colors though there were hardships and war during the period in Europe. During 1920 – 1945 there were lots of people on the farms because the degree of mechanization was low.
The research about Rystad has shown that the informers tend to look back on their childhood and youth in a positive way despite lack of money and poor living conditions of that time. Looking back, solidarity in the parish is emphasized as an appreciated value that nowadays is lost. During the period the situation for male and female farm workers changed towards independence. This also raised demands on the individual, a fact with both positive and negative consequences.
The study also presents a significant memory from the Second World War. The informers recalled that families in the little parish Rystad took care of children that had to escape from the warzones in Finland and Estonia and some of them stayed and were later adopted by their new families.
The people in the country seldom had much money but they had cattle and some land of their own and therefore they managed through hard times. Their individual history will hopefully give a better understanding how life in this little parish developed during the years 1930-1970.
This type of interviews is of great historic importance considering that human life is short and when it comes to an end our personal and unique history fades away.
