Résumé :
Diabetes has been shown to affect the thickness of the basement membrane in various human tissues and organs. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether diabetes can cause thickening of the anterior capsule basement membrane (ACBM), and correlate the findings with the duration and the severity of diabetes. For the purpose of this study, anterior lens capsule specimens of diabetic patients (DP), and non-diabetic patients (NDP) are collected from phaco-emulsification cataract surgeries. All cases are formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded and stained with H&E and periodic acid-Schiff.

Background: Hypoglycemia is a commonly encountered metabolic state in the patient population. It can be medically defined as a blood sugar <70mg/dL in a diabetic patient or <50mg/dL in a non-diabetic patient. It is less frequently seen in non-diabetics due to the body’s ability to autoregulate insulin administration. Common symptoms are sweating, tremors, palpitations, dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion. If left untreated, these symptoms can progress to seizures, arrythmias, or other complications that ultimately lead to death. Objective: To highlight the possible causes of hypoglycemia and

This will include research directed towards the influence of specific treatments and reasons for the high incidence of diabetes and heart disease in 'at risk' populations. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is considered one of the four major non-communicable disease with the global prevalence of this disease nearly doubling over the past 40 years, making it one of the leading causes of morbidity and contributing to mortality. Diabetes is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insulin deficiency, resistance or a combination of both. The disease is associated with several complications, and some of these complications are attributed to glycation of proteins which impairs their function and stability. Hyperglycaemia is a frequent phenomenon in critically-ill patients, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Hyperglycaemia results in cellular glucose overload and toxic adverse effects of glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation, especially in tissues with insulin-independent glucose uptake, and acute hyperglycaemia can exert a variety of negative effects. It is the main side effect of intensive insulin therapy. Both severe and moderate hypoglycaemia are independent risk factors of mortality in critically-ill patients. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is responsible for up to 10% of prevalent patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Loin pain is a common symptom that may be caused by cyst growth, intracyst haemorrhage, nephrolithiasis, or infection. Gross haematuria is also a common feature, but usually settles spontaneously. Poorer renal function is associated with increasing morbidity and mortality. In the wider population this is mainly as a consequence of cardiovascular disease. Renal patients are more likely to progress to end-stage renal disease, but also have high cardiovascular risk. Aiming to reduce both progression of renal impairment and cardiovascular disease are not contradictory. Focusing on the management of high-risk patients with proteinuria and reduced glomerular filtration rates, it is recommended that blood pressure should be kept below 140/90, or 130/80 if proteinuria is > 1 g/24 h (protein:

It is recognized that the burden of CKD is not only limited to its impact on demands for renal replacement therapy but has equally major impacts on the health of the overall population. The current treatment approach to diabetic retinopathy (DR) emphasizes early detection, aggressive management of risk factors, and timely intervention to prevent vision loss. Tight glycemic control remains foundational, as it significantly reduces the onset and progression of DR by minimizing microvascular damage. Regular ophthalmic screenings, including comprehensive dilated eye examinations, are crucial for early detection of retinal changes. For non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), management focuses on optimizing systemic control of blood pressure and lipids to slow progression.
