Résumé :
We document the fire history and associated ecological changes of an old-growth forest stand in western Maryland, U.S.A. The study area is located on the side slopes of a ridge system (Savage Mountain). Twenty basal cross sections were obtained from old trees cut in 1986, which provided evidence of 42 fires from 1615 to 1958. Nine fires were recorded in the sample trees in the 17th century, 13 in the 18th century, 12 in the 19th century, and eight in the early to mid-20th century. However, there were no major fire years after 1930. The Weibull modal fire interval was 7.6 years. Oaks recruited

Current forests developed under conditions different from original forests, with higher deer densities, reduced fire frequency, denser canopies, and smaller canopy gaps. These alterations have led to understories dominated by species simultaneously browse tolerant, shade tolerant, and fire sensitive leading to difficulties in the regeneration of oak species (Quercus spp.) in some areas. We evaluated how three key processes — understory fire, canopy gaps, and browsing — influenced tree species in east central West Virginia. We were particularly interested in the response of oak species because

Fifty-nine mixed oak stands in the Ridge and Valley Province of central Pennsylvania were sampled to evaluate the potential for oak replacement by later successional species or oak stability across a diverse landscape. Using species importance, stands were separated into four groups along detrended correspondence analysis axes 1 and 2. Betulalenta L.–Quercusprinus L.–Quercusrubra L. and Q. prinus–Q. rubra groups occurred on sandstone-based Inceptisols and Ultisols on ridges, whereas mixed–Quercus and Quercusalba L. groups were representative of limestone-based Alfisols on valley floors. Abstract Background In eastern North American forests and woodlands, formerly dominant oaks (Quercus spp. L.) and pines (Pinus spp. L.) are experiencing widespread regeneration challenges. These challenges are due to past land use and fire exclusion facilitating positive feedbacks that reduce the effectiveness of low-severity prescribed fire. High-severity fires (wildfires and potentially prescribed burns) offer promise to overcome these feedbacks and assist in ecosystem restoration. In 2010, a 670-ha mixed-severity wildfire burned in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky, USA, providing

Abstract Background Over the last century, fire exclusion has caused dramatic structural and compositional changes to southern New England forests, highlighting the need to reintroduce fires into the historically pyrogenic landscape to study the response. We investigated the effects of a single overstory thinning and midstory removal to create an open oak-hickory woodland structure, followed by repeated prescribed burns. We hypothesized that burning would create greater floristic diversity comprising fire-tolerant woody regeneration and shade-intolerant herbaceous flora. We followed shifts in

Cabin in the Sky was one of Latouche’s first major triumphs, an all-black 1940 musical for which he wrote the lyrics: music by Vernon Duke; book by Lynn Root; choreography by George Balanchine and Katherine Dunham; and sets by Boris Aronson; Ethel Waters and Dooley Wilson starred. The show proved a critical success, applauded for the sophistication of its score and the novelty of its choreography and set design; this included kudos in the black press, even as some progressive white critics took the work to task for perpetuating stereotypes. Abstract This is the first of three chapters exploring a subcategory of musical quotation as metafilm music: the musical referencing of a style, genre, or specific filmic mode. Godard expresses in Pierrot le fou, Passion, and Histoire(s) du cinéma a career-long interest in silent-film music that assumes in the context of sound film the role of metafilm music. In other words, Godard investigates with sound-film music the dramaturgical function of silent-film music. He applies a self-reflexive, silent-film music approach with only Antoine Duhamel’s music on the soundtrack to two sequences in Pie

Abstract For almost a century Arlen’s songs have been favorites of top vocalists, many of whom had long personal and professional associations with the composer. This chapter discusses selected great recordings, extending from “Stormy Weather” by Ethel Waters in 1933 to “Ain’t It de Truth” by Audra McDonald in 2002. Some songs were written for specific singers (Judy Garland and Lena Horne) to perform in film or onstage. Before the financial crash froze the motion of money, the plan to repopulate thinned-out downtowns had become an article of faith among advocates of low-carbon urbanism. Where else could the blueprint for truly sustainable living be realized? The technical difficulty and cost of retrofitting suburbs for higher density was prohibitive, even in the postwar inner-ring subdivisions that were more compact in their land use than today’s sprawl counterparts on the urban fringe. It was in city centers that the biggest improvements in energy efficiencies and emissions could be achieved, and, since the

Abstract The coda offers a close reading of a televised duet between the African American star Lena Horne and the white dancer/dance-in/choreographer Carol Haney on a 1962 episode of the Perry Como show. Though perhaps an unlikely final scene in a history of film musical dancing, the performance is suggestive of the trajectory of a number of the book’s key figures, who found work in television when movie musicals entered a period of decline. Despite the absence of information about the conditions of production of the number, the duet is an opportunity to contemplate what dance-ins can teach us

The above quote from a recent Hollywood film presentation of Colonel Percival Fawcett’s obsessive early twentieth-century search for the remains of the Lost City of Z (Gray, 2016) highlights the effort that it has taken to convince the academic world and the public alike that large urban forms can be developed in tropical forest settings. While the film, and the book by David Grann (2009) upon which it was based, grossly overplay the exploration credentials, respect for Indigenous peoples, and scientific abilities of Colonel Fawcett (Hemming, 2017), this quote encapsulates the difficult workin
