Hospitalization in childhood can be characterized as a stressful and distressing event for patients and families, especially in cases of illnesses or chronic conditions that require pediatric palliative care (PPC). The hospital psychologist who works in PPC contributes, among other things, to minimize the suffering resulting from illnesses. The purpose of this article was to report the experience of participant observation, as a field activity of a Psychology guided research practice discipline, about the work in PPC of a psychologist in a public hospital in the South of Brazil. This is an observational study, of a qualitative and descriptive nature, of six episodes of participant observation recorded by a Psychology undergraduate in a field diary and analyzed through categorical content analysis. During the observations, the psychologist worked with nine companions and eleven children in hospitalized PPC. It was found that the most required activities for the psychologist were the following categories: listening and supporting family members, to express emotions and encourage self-care; mediation between family members and the healthcare team, for better communication; playful activities with children, to distract and form bonds; and doing records in medical records, to inform and guide the team. In the field of PPC, the psychologist's work must be based on a biopsychosocial perspective of individuals, with the purpose of promoting comprehensive and humanized care. However, considering the complexities present in PPC and the tensions inherent to the hospital context, the psychologist must also be aware of his self-care needs during his professional practice.

This field note outlines the reflections that arose from the use of the participant observation method as an immersive process during my doctoral research fieldwork on writing retreats. The observations made during a Thèsez-vous retreat held in January 2020 resulted in findings on the process of such a retreat and on-site interactions between participants and facilitators. This process not only highlighted the merits of this method, but also elucidated my doctoral research interests and questions. This note encourages readers to apply the participant observation method in their own research to reveal their subjectivity toward their topic of study.

Cotidiano Escolar. Psicanálise. ABSTRACT The research aimed to analyze the statements, expressions and manifestations of children about their experiences in the daily school life of early childhood education. To achieve the objectives, the researcher followed a class of Early Childhood Education, with students aged between five and seven years, in a private school in Joinville/SC, based on the assumptions of participant observation. In this sense, the construction of the data occurred through participant observation and the notes were developed in the meeting between the participants and the researcher, through the transferential route. The process of organizing the material collected in the observations was through content analysis and the theoretical framework had the psychoanalytic perspective as a guide for the discussion of the data. As a result, it can be seen that aspects related to students' preferences about the school routine were out of the way; the approximations in student relationships and some scores referring to body discoveries, which are emphasized in the relationship between peers. Thus, through observation, it can be said that it is essential to make a careful listening of children as protagonists of school daily life, reflecting on the formative relationship, where education and knowledge among the subjects approach, regardless of the place that each one occupies in the school environment. Finally, the children's expressions point to the link between education and psychoanalysis, directing as a possibility of constructions where some desires manifest themselves at the point where something possible to be enunciated escapes and precisely for this reason they announce the unconscious. Bouckaert, Mathias.

In the context of the transition of societies towards sustainable development, the role of universities is increasingly highlighted. In this respect, assessment, as a support tool for organizations whishing to improve their performance, can be of great assistance. Opportunities for the application of assessment remains however limited. The university and sustainability are normative objects and their definition is subject to considerable opposition. In addition, their reality is progressive and characterized by high levels of uncertainty and paradoxical complexity. This work aims to determine the conditions under which assessment practices can support, or otherwise hinder, the performances of universities toward sustainability. It comes in two parts. The first part focuses on the theoretical construction of an evaluation norm for the "sustainable performances of universities". It is based on a comprehensive review of the specific features of the university and sustainability, as well as on an analysis of several best practices identified internationally. The second part compares and strengthens those findings by focussing on the design of an operational assessment methodology. This research was conducted through a multi- stakeholder participatory process that led to the building of a multidimensional framework comprising more than 50 indicators. This tool aims to be a contribution to the development of assessment methods for academic actors willing to identify ways of improving their performances with respect to sustainability

This would set in turn the intellectual frameworks structuring its internal sociabilities. A "clandestine" anthropological observation of the actor's daily practices allows to outpass this utilitarian vision of professional relations. The managerial structure creates a symbolic space where singular and individual histories develop between given constraints and specific responses. From this point of view management pertains more to a specific way of thought, characterized by "totemism" and a tinkering between ends and resources. This involves a wasting of resources often unperceived by the management, which remains nonetheless socially useful to the producing structure's life

This thesis reports a study of accountants’ everyday work. Direct observation of their daily work through participant observation allows showing erratic terms understudied by accounting research. Contributions are drawn upon financial accounting and organizing as well. I propose a preliminary conceptual formalization of the preparation of accounts in organizations, combining actors, tools and contexts. By giving enough importance to preparers in the study of financial reporting, our contributions question dominant representations in financial accounting research. Our results describe how some of the qualities commonly attributed to financial statements (neutrality, loyalty ...) are of questionable importance and how reducing financial reporting to an agency conflict is difficult

Loser, Francis.

Making sense of this practice calls for multiple sources of logic. However, since the introduction of management skills and the semantics of those competences in the field of special education, the work of educators has been reduced to a singular focus on measurable acts. Therefore, in order to move away from this positivist binary thinking, we undertook a paradigm shift that opted for an aesthetic approach, one that views human action as whole rather than fragmented. This approach meshes particularly well with educators whose activities are distinguished by their intermingling of physical, emotional and reflective dimensions. We tested this hypothesis through a field survey conducted while engaged in participant observation in two educational facilities in the Geneva area. Our analysis rests on the contributions of researchers interested in the aesthetic and pragmatic dimensions of theories of action. Our observations have in large measure helped to give credibility to our hypothesis. We can, on the one hand, identify some major areas that contribute to the construction of an epistemology of educators’ actions, and, on the other hand, present some possibilities for training practitioners

As far as management control and innovation are concerned, some researchers think it is worth studying their convergence. High technology innovation has proved to be at the core of this problem. Our research project aims therefore at conducting an empirical study of the relevant methods for controlling a High Technology Innovation Project (HTIP). This research project begins with a systematic analysis of the various modes of control for these projects. It is also based on a “participant observer” approach: thanks to observations in France Telecom – a company for whom these strategic stakes are important – this method helps enriching the conceptual framework of these modes of control. The observation of various projects in time enables us to eventually propose HTIP control performance criteria, thus broadening the knowledge of innovation

This dissertation, at the crossroads of urban studies and the sociology of professional groups and expertise, explores the characteristics of a group of experts in sustainable development engaged in the processes of urban production in the 2010s. This work is based on an ethnographic study of the activity of a team of about twenty specialists working at Alpha, a multi-specialized and international urban engineering company that is part of a broader urban services business. My work shows that the existence of this group of experts, its journey, and its structuring features fundamentally reflect its members’ ability to address the ambiguities of sustainable development in order to maintain and reformulate a diversified need for expertise. Thus, they take care of a multidimensional problem within the company and conquer new markets of urban expertise. The differentiated appropriation of sustainability principles in these activities reflects the dynamics of legitimization between experts and other actors in the professional worlds of urban engineering, consulting and urban planning and design. The delimitation and extension of the experts' professional jurisdiction requires that they constantly perform a balancing act which both underscores the uniqueness of their skills and of the knowledge, and the diversity of their professional fields. These results were collected from 2013 to 2018 from the position of a practitioner researcher. This dissertation thus contributes to identifying both the processes through which of a group of actors (re)-positions themselves at the heart of the urban fabric and the ways through which the outlines of sustainable development are renewed

The auditor’s competence has been considered in the literature as an insurance of “detection capability” without taking into account the relational component. From a participant observation of a period of four years within the Audit and Co firm, we are interested in understanding the link between one of the foundations of Audit quality, namely competence and the Audit firm as a social organization. Using as a framework for analyzing social network theory in three ways: social capital, trust and reputation. The results of our research allow to go a little further than the traditional and impersonal vision which offers classical approach of the auditor’s competence. Insofar the constitution of social capital, conditioned by the combination trust-reputation, is crucial for the evolution of the auditor career. Beyond a purely “technical ” competence, to be socially integrated in a network that allows to evolve more within the firm

***/ Abstract - A hospital’s waiting room is usually a place where feelings are revealed and behaviors can be observed. That is why one can speak of a peculiar universe where people, by and large affected by disease, show different behaviors and manifestations, which we will call and study as the “Ethnography of the Waiting Room”. The purpose of this study is to portray the speeches, opinions and behaviors of the people using that particular place, as the inevitable reflex of their relation with “others” and the manifestation of their own social identity, by using the ethnographic research method of Social Sciences. This study will focus on a mixed group of users, all of them consumers of auxiliary means of diagnosis and therapeutic (radiological exams), as they wait for their turn in the waiting room of the Radiology Central Service at the S. José Hospital. We are aware of how often some patients show feelings and behaviors that can be explained, one assumes, as the result of anxiety, fear of the unknown, and the result of the diagnosis, as well as the delay in performing the exam. The way all these manifestations occur is also a primary subject of the study, its specific goal being to depict the physical environment and to submit proposals that can improve the existing conditions. The methodology used is based on the ethnographic technique of participant observation that goes on for a long period on the field, in which the main tool for collecting data is the researcher's own observation, by the use of a field diary and recording means.

This thesis is a case-suty of an adult psychotic patient with multiple disabilities and autistic symptomatology. After the “classical” study of a clinically psychiatric case, based on organized sessions of the “participatory observation” method, a computerised data analysis is developed and applied to the speech and the gestures of the patient. The observer's involvement and interaction with the patient is analysed by the same means, first clinical then computerized. The results show an enrichment of the semiology in relation to the signification of the patient's expressions and the patient's personal investments. This reinforces the various characteristics recognized in the manner of expression of autistic subjects, and attributes a therapeutic role to this type of treatment

There is a tendency affecting the whole work world since a few décades on : employers seem not just obsessed about the need of improving work times and work action, but they also seem to give more importance to the employee implication and his/her subjectivity, in order to make the worker use of his/her working time and abilities in the most efficient way from the point of view of the company. When personal subjectivity becomes a target for the company, we can suppose that also rivalry moves to the field of the subjectivity working time. This double assumption is developed and based in an immersion research fulfilled in a telephone platform, in an auto industry and in a nuclear production's tenter

Résumé :
This study aimed to investigate how Brazilian children, 7 and 8 years old, appropriate the notions of chance, the idea of random, and sample space in game situations. The participating children study at the Municipal Public Network of Uberlândia - Minas Gerais - Brazil. The research was qualitative and sought theoretical reference in statistical education, in the studies on probability and in the role of educational games. The production of the dice was carried out by means of the game "Throwing the coin," and by means of participant observation. We infer that children have acquired the skills of: presenting the possible results of a random coin experiment; realizing that the outcome of the coin toss depends on chance; and understanding that not all phenomena are deterministic.

This paper investigates the experience of the landscape in everyday life over mobility infrastructures through the case study Estrada Parque Taguatinga (EPTG), DF-085. The discussion has two components, one theoretical and another empirical. The first one will examine the role of the road infrastructure in recognition of the territory and its landscapes, the perception modes in daily commuting and the motion experience itself. Besides, the empirical component will be developed according to the case study, starting with a brief parkway historiography, its edges, uses and configurations; as well as analyzes based on interpretative anthropology, and its ethnographic description and participant observation tools, in order to identify those landscapes, constantly changing. Besides situating the citizens’ narratives in their paths, crossings and sensitive experiences which they establish with the territory and with the parkway in the everyday life.

Résumé :
Determining participant engagement is an important issue across a large number of fields, ranging from entertainment to education. Traditionally, feedback from participants is taken after the activity has been completed. Alternately, continuous observation by trained humans is needed. Thus, there is a need for an automated real time solution. In this paper, the authors propose a data mining driven approach that models a participant’s engagement, based on body language data acquired in real time using non-invasive sensors. Skeletal position data, that approximates human body motions, is acquired from participants using off the shelf, non-invasive sensors. Thereafter, machine learning techniques are employed to detect body language patterns representing emotions such as delight, interest, boredom, frustration, and confusion. The methodology proposed in this paper enables researchers to predict the participants’ engagement levels in real time with high accuracy above 98%. A case study involving human participants enacting eight body language poses, is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the methodology. Finally, this methodology highlights the potential of a real time, automated engagement detection using non-invasive sensors which can ultimately have applications in a large variety of areas such as lectures, gaming and classroom learning.

Résumé :
Oct. 07 2019 – Oct. 10, 2019 Kiel (Germany) – Kiel (Germany) MNF-Pher-110The main purpose of the ALKOR cruise AL529 was the training of students in observational techniques applied by physical oceanographers. The students who participated in the trip attend the module "Measurement Methods of Oceanography" which is offered in the Bachelor program "Physics of the Earth System" at CAU Kiel. During the AL529 the students were instructed in instrument calibration and in the interpretation of measurement data at sea. In addition, the students had the opportunity to learn about working and living at sea and to explore and study the impact of physical processes in the western Baltic Sea, the sea at their doorstep. The observations show a quasi-synoptic picture of the hydrography and currents in the western Baltic Sea. Twice-repeated hydrographic and current sections across the Fehmarn Belt show well the short time scales where significant changes occur. A zonal section along the deepest topography, from about 10°40'E to 014°21'E, shows very nicely the two-layer system of outflowing low salinity and inflowing North Sea water. A bottom shield anchorage shows the currents in the water column and the near-bottom temperature and salinity variations in the Fehmarnbelt area.

Résumé :
Background: Since continuing advances in radiotherapy technology broaden the role of radiotherapy in the treatment of gynaecologic malignancies, the use of vaginal dilators has been introduced in order to mitigate the risk of vaginal stenosis. The main aims of this study were to investigate the vaginal dilator use efficacy in the treatment of radiation-induced vaginal stenosis and the vaginal dilator effect on sexual quality of life. Methods: We studied fifty-three patients with endometrial or cervical cancer. The participants were treated with radical or adjuvant external beam radiotherapy and/or brachytherapy. They were routinely examined at four time points post-radiotherapy when also they were asked to fill in a validated sexual function-vaginal changes questionnaire. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The vaginal stenosis grading score was decreased and the size of the vaginal dilator comfortably insertable was gradually increased throughout the year of vaginal dilator use while radiation-induced vaginal and sexual symptoms were improved throughout the year of VD use. All patients with initial grade 3 showed vaginal stenosis of grade 2 after 12 months of vaginal dilator use and 65.8% of the patients with grade 2 initial vaginal stenosis demonstrated final vaginal stenosis grade 1 while 77.8% of the participants with initial 1st size of vaginal dilators reached the 3rd vaginal dilator size after 12 months. Starting time of dilator therapy &lt;= 3 months after the end of radiotherapy was associated with a significant decrease in vaginal stenosis. Additionally, there was an overall upward trend regarding patients’ satisfaction with their sexual life. Conclusion: Endometrial and cervical cancer survivors should be encouraged to use vaginal dilators for the treatment of vaginal stenosis and sexual rehabilitation after radiotherapy.

Résumé :
As part of CLARISSA’s qualitative, thematic research agenda, Geographic Information System (GIS) journey mapping and ethnographic observation was conducted to gain insights into the daily lives, experiences, journeys, and feelings of children involved in the Adult Entertainment Sector (AES). Twenty children documented their daily activities using a mobile app, with support and accompaniment from CLARISSA researchers. Subsequently, a collaborative analysis was conducted with participants and the CLARISSA research team, culminating in the formation of a number of GIS-based Action Research Groups to work on predominant issues or themes. This process generated evidence that is often deeply veiled and difficult to uncover. The formation of this ARG was prompted by recurring issues around children’s journeys to work that emerged through the research. The group was focused on the theme, ‘The journey to work and back’.
