Che, morethan anyone, including Fidel, guided the transformation of the rag-tag band that survived the Granma landing at Playa las Coloradas and the subsequent massacre at Alegría del Pío in late November 1956, into "the most accomplished guerrilla army in 20th century Latin America." It was Che who led the guerrillas' victorious two-year campaign against 40,000 U.S.-equipped troops supported by formidable air and naval power.

IntroductionFor over five years, Romanians have been using their bodies in public spaces to challenge politicians’ disregard for the average citizen. In a region low in standards of civic engagement, such as voter turnout and petition signing, Romanian people’s “citizenship of the streets” has stopped environmentally destructive mining in 2013, ousted a corrupt cabinet in 2015, and blocked legislation legalising abuse of public office in 2017 (Solnit 214). This article explores the democratic affordances of collective resistive walking, by focusing on Romania’s capital, Bucharest. I illustrate

By the time you read this, it will be wrong. Things seemed to be moving so fast in these first days after airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania earth. Each certainty is as carelessly dropped as it was once carelessly assumed. The sounds of lower Manhattan that used to serve as white noise for residents—sirens, screeches, screams—are no longer signs without a referent. Instead, they make folks stare and stop, hurry and hustle, wondering whether the noises we know so well are in fact, this time, coefficients of a new reality. At the time of writing

Abstract I n July 1863, at the Pennsylvania crossroads town of Gettysburg, the Union Army of the Potomac under George Gordon Meade won a momentous victory over Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. In three days of intense fighting, Meade’s army inflicted 28,000 Confederate losses, while suffering 23,000 killed or wounded of its own, including three of its seven corps commanders. On the fourth day of the confrontation between the two forces, the battlefield was comparatively quiet. Lee sent a seventeen-mile-long wagon train of wounded men back toward Virginia, but defiantly kept the rest

Abstract Washington’s tattered little army began to run on November 20, the day Cornwallis crossed the Hudson above Fort Lee. It did not stop running for twelve days, until it was in Pennsylvania and the Delaware River lay like a welcome rampart between it and the enemy. Two months earlier neither Washington nor Howe had thought the campaign of 1776 would boil down to this. Both commanders had believed that if the fighting moved beyond Manhattan, it would centre around a contest for control of the Hudson River, with Howe attempting to link up with the British army coming south out of Canada. George Rogers Clark was Virginia’s western military commander from 1778 until 1783. As such, it was his responsibility to remedy the ongoing Native war waged against Kentucky’s settlers, although the actions that fed this war originated as far away as North Carolina and Fort Pitt. Boone lost two sons to the violence, a peaceful village of Christian Delawares was massacred by irate Pennsylvania militiamen, and a widelyadmired frontier colonel was literally baked by revenge-minded Delawares in a horrific chain of events recorded by William Croghan at Fort Pitt. The frontier terror led Clark to m

The “golden age of piracy” in the Caribbean lasted from the end of the English Civil War to the end of the first quarter of the eighteenth century, or roughly 1650 to 1725. The lawlessness in the Caribbean corresponded with a time when Spanish power, which controlled most of the lands and trade around the sea, was fading. French, Dutch, and English pirates took advantage of the loss of Spanish control to raid settlements and seize trading ships. In 1655, at the height of the Interregnum following the English Civil War, an English fleet led by Admiral William Penn (1621–1670), father of the fou

He was at an awkward age when sons must distance themselves from their fathers as they become men. Lincoln called for Robert because his mother, Mary Todd, was gravely ill. 1 On July 2, she had had a carriage accident.
