Participation in society requires not only literary and mathematical basic education but also basic digital literacy (COULDRY & HEPP, 2016; BMBF & KMK, 2016). Current research indicates that low literary and low digital competences are linked (Wolf & Koppel, 2017; BUDDEBERG, 2019). 6.2 million adults with low literality live in Germany (GROTLÜSCHEN et al., 2019). These people may be able to write and understand words or simple sentences when reading, but neither longer sentences nor coherent texts. However, this results in a considerable risk of exclusion from participation in various areas of life (work, finance, housing, informed decision) (BUDDEBERG, 2019). Due to technological developments, people with a low level of digital literacy are systematically (partially) excluded from participation in society in most parts of the world. This leads to the question of what it is that defines digital literacy in order not to be excluded from society because of low digital literacy. In this article we discuss what digital literacy is - including the concept of competence - and what elements basic digital literacy encompasses.

In order to access, comprehend, and use information to make decisions about their health, people must possess certain personal traits and social resources, which are referred to as health literacy. It can assist us in maintaining good health, preventing illness, and effectively managing existing illnesses. The degree to which a person can locate, comprehend, and make use of information and services to support health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others is known as personal health literacy. Low health literacy is linked to more hospitalizations, more use of emergency care, less use of preventative services, and a worsened ability to understand labels and health messages, a worsened state of health, higher mortality, and more expensive medical care.

Abstract People who plan ahead typically fare better during the response and recovery phases of a disaster. However, problems arise when the needs, wants, abilities, and resources of vulnerable people are not adequately considered. The lack of alignment between the literacy demands of existing materials and the literacy skills of many vulnerable subgroups limits their ability to understand and effectively use potentially life-saving information. Existing health literacy models that have demonstrated effectiveness in changing health behaviors and improving outcomes is a first step to reducing disaster-related morbidity and mortality in low resource and low literacy areas. This presentation will 1) describe how interdisciplinary collaborations can be used to address this public health issue, 2) explain how health literacy techniques can be applied when developing disaster materials, and 3) present research data on a social marketing campaign to improved disaster preparedness of older adults. Part of a symposium sponsored by Disasters and Older Adults Interest Group.

Background Limited cancer health literacy may be attributed to various factors. Although these factors play decisive roles in identifying individuals with limited cancer health literacy, they have not been sufficiently investigated, especially in China. There is a pressing need to ascertain the factors that effectively identify Chinese people with poor cancer health literacy. Objective This study aimed to identify the factor associated with limited cancer health literacy among Chinese people based on the 6-Item Cancer Health Literacy Test (CHLT-6). Methods We first categorized Chinese study participants according to the answers provided for cancer health literacy as follows: people who provided ≤3 correct answers were labeled as having limited cancer health literacy, whereas those who provided between 4 and 6 correct answers were labeled as having adequate cancer health literacy. We then adopted logistic regression to analyze the factors that were closely related to limited cancer health literacy among at-risk study participants. Results The logistic regression analysis identified the following factors that effectively predicted limited cancer health literacy: (1) male gender, (2) low education attainment, (3) age, (4) high levels of self-assessed general disease knowledge, (5) low levels of digital health literacy, (6) limited communicative health literacy, (7) low general health numeracy, and (8) high levels of mistrust in health authorities. Conclusions Using regression analysis, we successfully identified 8 factors that could be used as predictors of limited cancer health literacy among Chinese populations. These findings have important clinical implications for supporting Chinese people with limited cancer health literacy through the development of more targeted health educational programs and resources that better align with their actual skill levels.

ABSTRACT. Individuals with low health literacy have less knowledge of their own health condition. Carers play a key role in older people’s activities of daily living. Objective: to evaluate the performance of carers of older people using the S-TOFHLA (Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults) and to identify caregiver characteristics associated with low functional health literacy. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted. The S-TOFHLA, a sociodemographic instrument, the Mini-Mental State Exam and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 were applied to 80 carers of older patients routinely followed by doctors from the Primary Health Care Sector of the City of Botucatu, São Paulo. The multivariate analysis used an ordinal logistic regression model with test (S-TOFHLA) scores as the dependent variable. The level of statistical significance adopted was 0.05. Results: the individuals had a mean age of 54.6 (± 11.7); 27% of the carers evaluated had inadequate levels of health literacy (S-TOFHLA ≥54). A higher proportion of individuals with low education had inadequate or marginal health literacy (p<0.001). Conclusion: nearly 1/3 of the carers had marginal or inadequate levels of health literacy. These results highlight the difficulties of many carers in understanding health information.

The objective of the study was to explore the feasibility of an intervention that enhances preventive care for primary care patients with low health literacy. A mixed method study was conducted in four Sydney general practices in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage. The intervention included screening for low health literacy in patients aged 40–69 years, clinical record audits of care for prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and provider training and meetings. Surveys and interviews were conducted to identify providers’ approaches to, and delivery of, preventive care for people with low health literacy. Our study found variable response rates and prevalence of low health literacy. Of the eligible patients screened, 29% had low health literacy. Providers described three approaches to preventive care, which remained largely unchanged. However, they demonstrated recognition of the importance of better communication and referral support for patients with low health literacy. Fewer patients with low health literacy were identified than expected. Despite improved awareness of the need for better communication, there was limited evidence of change in providers’ approach to providing preventive care, suggesting a need for more attention towards providers’ attitudes to support these patients.

Low literacy and low health literacy affect people in all demographic strata and interfere with patients’ abilities to understand and act on information provided by health careproviders. Many print health education materials are written at reading levels well above those recommended. Thus, compliance to health messages is compromised, and health costs are increased. As medicine moves into new fields such as precision medicine, effective communication between patients and health care professionals becomes even more challenging and important.

Abstract Background Previous research from the USA has shown that low health literacy is associated with higher hospitalization rates and higher rates of emergency service use. However, studies in a European context using more comprehensive health literacy definitions are lacking. The aim was to study the impact of low health literacy on healthcare utilization in a Danish context. Methods In this prospective cohort study, baseline survey data from 2013 were derived from a large Danish health and morbidity survey and merged with individual-level longitudinal register data for a 4-year follow-up period. The study included people in the general population (n = 29 473) and subgroups of people with four different chronic conditions: cardiovascular disease (CVD) (n = 2389), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n = 1214), diabetes (n = 1685) and mental disorders (n = 1577). Results In the general population, low health literacy predicted slightly more visits to the general practitioner and admissions to hospital and longer hospitalization periods at 4 years of follow-up, whereas low health literacy did not predict planned outpatient visits or emergency room visits. In people with CVD, low health literacy predicted more days with emergency room visits. In people with mental disorders, difficulties in actively engaging with healthcare providers were associated with a higher number of hospital admission days. No significant association between health literacy and healthcare utilization was found for diabetes or COPD. Conclusions Even though Denmark has a universal healthcare system the level of health literacy affects healthcare use in the general population and in people with CVD and mental disorders.

Various initiatives have been taken to bridge the urban-rural digital divide in Malaysia, which has impacted the change of mindset among the rural community in terms of acceptance and assimilation of digital technologies in their daily life. This includes digital literacy-related activities for self-development, especially in cultivating reading habits. The main purpose of this study is to investigate digital reading practices among rural communities in low literacy rate areas in promoting reading culture in Malaysia under the 10-year National Reading Decade (DMK) 2021-2030 programme. A quantitative design of the study which involved 400 rural community respondents from 4 selected states in Malaysia (Kedah, Kelantan, Sarawak, and Sabah) using the multi-stage and mixed sampling method in administering the survey questionnaires. This study found that rural communities in low literacy rate areas in Malaysia did practice digital reading, primarily on smartphone. The empowerment of digital literacy in terms of digital reading practices is believed to be able to narrow down the digital divide among rural communities. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for rural development in ICT and create better understanding and awareness among policymakers to create a rural society which is learned and well-informed through a more inclusive digital reading practices.

Health literacy is understudied in the context of social networks. Our pilot study goal was to consider this research gap among vulnerable, low-income mothers of minority ethnic background in the state of Hawai‘i, USA. Recruitment followed a modified snowball sampling approach. First, we identified and interviewed seven mothers (“egos”) in a state-sponsored home visiting program. We then sought to interview individuals whom each mother said was part of her health decision-making network (“first-level alters”) and all individuals whom the first-level alters said were part of their health decision-making networks (“second-level alters”). Health literacy was self-reported using a validated item. A total of 18 people were interviewed, including all mothers (n = 7), 35% of the first-level alters (n = 7/20), and 36% of the second-level alters (n = 4/11). On average, the mothers made health decisions with 2.9 people (range: 1-6); partners/spouses and mothers/mothers-in-law were most common. One mother had low health literacy; her two first-level alters also had low health literacy. Across the full sample, the average number of people in individuals’ health decision networks was 2.5 (range: 0–7); 39% of those interviewed had low health literacy. This can inform the design of future studies and successful interventions to improve health literacy.

Financial literacy is highly heterogeneous across the population, depending on school education, family influence, gender and age. However, many tests highlight the low level of basic financial skills in the general population, particularly among young people. Yet financial knowledge and confidence in that knowledge have a direct impact on investors’ choices and ultimate wealth, particularly when concepts such as risk are poorly understood. Beyond, traditional financial literacy is not enough to guarantee a sustainable financial culture. This also requires an understanding of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and their impact on financial decisions. Attitudes towards sustainable investments are correlated with understanding of these financial products and perceptions of greenwashing. In addition, recent research shows that sustainable finance is increasingly integrated into financial assets valuation and investors behavior. We review the literature on these topics.

Abstract Objective People living with HIV (PLWH) are at higher risk for poorer neurocognitive functioning and health literacy than uninfected persons, which are associated with worse medical outcomes. Aging research suggests that the effect of neurocognitive functioning on health outcomes may be more pronounced in those with low health literacy. We aimed to determine whether low health literacy might amplify the adverse effects of neurocognitive functioning on treatment management outcomes in 171 PLWH aged 40+. Method In this cross-sectional, observational study, participants completed a well-validated battery of neurocognitive, health literacy, and treatment management measures. A binary health literacy variable (low vs. adequate) was determined via established cut points on the well-validated health literacy tests. Treatment management outcomes included biomarkers of HIV (i.e., CD4 counts and viral load), self-management of HIV disease (i.e., self-reported medication adherence and self-efficacy for HIV disease management), and performance-based health-related decision-making. Results Forty-seven percent of the sample met the criteria for low health literacy. Multivariable regressions adjusting for clinicodemographic (e.g., race, socioeconomic status) covariates revealed significant interactions for self-efficacy for HIV disease management and health-related decision-making, such that neurocognitive functioning was associated with these outcomes among those with low, but not adequate health literacy. Conclusions Findings suggest that low health literacy may increase the vulnerability of PLWH to the adverse effects of neurocognitive impairment on health outcomes, or conversely that adequate health literacy may provide a buffer against the health risks associated neurocognitive impairment. Interventions targeting health literacy in PLWH may mitigate the effects of neurocognitive impairment on health outcomes.

Résumé :

Financial literacy, in a broad sense, is the knowledge and skills that empower people to make informed decisions regarding the use of financial services and the management of one’s private and business finances. The study discusses the detailed analysis of financial literacy, financial education, and management by the people of Bongo Gewog in Bhutan. The findings suggest that the financial literacy among the people of Bongo is high; however, the literal knowledge of financial literacy is low. The research also found that education has a significant relationship with financial literacy wherein people with higher levels of qualification demonstrated a higher level of financial literacy and vice versa. This research concluded that males were more financially literate when compared to females.

In the modern world, political literacy of young people is becoming one of the most important factors determining their active participation in socio-political life. The relevance of this topic is due to the fact that young people, representing a significant part of the population, often face problems of low political awareness, which affects their activity and influence on the processes taking place in the country. The purpose of this study is to analyze the main problems that affect the formation of political literacy of young people. The main findings show that a low level of political literacy negatively affects the degree of involvement of young people in political processes, which requires the development of effective educational programs and initiatives aimed at raising their awareness. Prospects for further research include the need for a thorough study of the influence of mass media on the formation of political literacy of young people, as well as the development of new approaches to educational strategies that could contribute to more active participation of young people in political life. The authors propose various forms of work with young people to improve the level of political literacy of young people (holding debates and election simulations, involving young people in volunteer initiatives and projects aimed at solving social problems).

In the last decade, researchers have responded to a social demand for science to become more responsible and have a greater effect on society by looking for innovative ways to link science and lay people. The movement to democratize expert knowledge is growing. This movement is creating tools that are used for improving the scientific literacy of citizens. This article presents dialogues between researchers and lay people of low socioeconomic status and low educational level on the social impact of a Scientific Dialogic Gathering (SDG) as a tool for promoting scientific self-literacy that is being developed at an urban adult school in Spain. Based on a communicative and qualitative approach, an SDG encourages people of low socioeconomic status and low educational level to learn about the latest scientific breakthroughs on issues that interest them, such as health-related topics. Participants in a SDG, together with researchers and educators, discuss scientific articles in an egalitarian dialog. One of the main results of this experience is that SDGs are helping lay people to make better decisions in the face of the challenges of today’s society.

Financial literacy is very important (Chhow & Ansong, 2010) for young people. This can form a habit of saving and accumulating assets for young people. Financial literacy is also the key (Ansong & Gyensare, 2012) to reduce financial problems, especially for young adults. Financial literacy (Shaari, Hasan, Mohamed, & Sabri, 2013) can also prevent young people from overusing third party funds. This financial literacy can influence decision making regarding financial problems in young people. The literacy level assessment carried out on young people will provide insight for researchers in understanding behavior related to finance.This study uses a quantitative method approach. The data source used is Madiun City youth in the age range of 18-39 years. The data collection technique used is to use a questionnaire or questionnaire. The results show that the financial literacy of young people in Madiun City is at a low level.

In primary school Chinese education, literacy is a very important work. Literacy is an important part of primary school Chinese and also an important part of primary school Chinese. At present, literacy education is increasingly valued by teachers. However, there are still many problems to be solved in China’s literacy education. In traditional education and teaching, teachers should let students recite a large number of concepts, formulas, and rules in order to improve students’ learning effect. However, due to the lack of practical support, this has become a major obstacle in education and teaching. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to use augmented reality (AR) technology to explore the literacy teaching of junior students. From the result of the test of students’ literacy teaching, it can be seen that the number of people who scored 81–100 points in the experimental class and the control class before the experiment was 9 and 4, respectively. After the experiment, the number of people who scored 81–100 points in the experimental class and the control board was 15 and 7, respectively. Therefore, it is very necessary to use AR technology to carry out applied research on literacy teaching at the low learning stage.

Consuming halal products is increasingly important for Muslims. However, there are still many people who do not fully understand the concept of halal, so they have the potential to choose products that are not in accordance with Islamic law. This shows the need to increase halal science literacy in society. This research aims to analyze the community's halal science literacy level and identify factors that influence the community's halal science literacy. This research uses quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the research show that out of 30 respondents representing each of the Garut, Bandung and Tasikmalaya regions, it shows that the community's halal science literacy level is still relatively low, as indicated by the descriptive results, the average attitude aspect is still worth 21.20. Then the researchers also reviewed the relationship between four indicators of halal scientific literacy, namely aspects of knowledge, context, process and attitude, in the correlation statistical results showing a significance value of <0.05. Factors that influence people's halal scientific literacy include: level of education, religious knowledge and access to information obtained. Based on the research results, several strategies that can be implemented to increase public halal science literacy are increasing education and outreach about halal science to the public as well as access to information about halal science to the public. These programs need to touch on the four aspects studied, namely knowledge, context, process and attitude, in order to achieve optimal effectiveness. Increasing halal science literacy is very important to help people choose halal products intelligently and in accordance with Islamic law

It can help us stay healthy by preventing illness and effectively managing existing illnesses. People with low health literacy (LHL) may find it difficult to manage their condition and prevent illness, which may lead to increased use of healthcare services. Furthermore, LHL is associated with increased hospitalizations, increased use of emergency care, decreased use of preventative services, and a worsened ability to understand labels and health messages, a worsened state of health, higher mortality, and more expensive medical care.

Résumé :

This article draws on work with communities in the rural and remote towns of Brewarrina, Wilcannia and Enngonia, New South Wales (NSW) to explore the relationship between low adult literacy levels and the continuing alienation of Aboriginal communities from educational decision making. Building on the analysis of community-school relations conducted by scholars such as Jay Phillips, Allan Luke and Kevin Lowe, we contend that it is exceedingly difficult to address the problems which prevent more productive relationships between communities and schools in widespread and sustainable ways, without also addressing the problem of low adult literacy. Communities who have participated in the Yes, I Can! Aboriginal Adult Literacy Campaign help us to understand a number of important issues, including, the extent of disenfranchisement that is associated with inadequate adult literacy, the enormity of the challenges faced by previously low-literate and disengaged people to re-engage in community life, the additional pressures placed on literate members of the community when many people have minimal literacy, and the relationship between low rates of adult literacy and the persistence of deficit thinking on the part of schools.

Financial problems can be avoided by understanding the importance of financial literacy as a basic need. In general, vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, have a low level of financial literacy and are categorized as a low income group, so it is still difficult to gain access to financial institutions, products and services. Therefore, there is a need for on going multi-sectoral education and assistance so that business groups with disabilities are more financially literate so that they can increase their financial independence and deserve financial services. This research aims to examine the impact of Financial Literacy, Financial Inclusion and Financial Technology on the Financial Performance of DPO Restu Abadi Puworejo. Data collection techniques in this research were obtained by observation, interviews, questionnaires, documentation and literature study. The population in this study were members of the DPO Restu Abadi Purworejo. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with the criteria for members who had joined for more than 3 years, had an active business for 2 years and had consistent business income for 1 year, resulting in a total sample of 8 people. The data analysis techniques in this research are Multiple Linear Regression, Determination Test, and Hypothesis Test (T Test and F Test). Multiple regression analysis produces the equation Y=a+bX1+bX2+e. The regression results show that financial literacy, financial inclusion and financial technology have an impact on increasing the financial performance of DPO Restu Abadi Purworejo.

This chapter concerns adult literacy issues in Canada—adults being defined as people fifteen years or older and out of school—and focuses primarily on adults who are not (or are barely) literate in any language. Until the mid-1980s, educational support for adults who wished to develop or improve their literacy skills up to about the grade eight level was almost entirely a charitable endeavor. People with low literacy skills were perceived to be a marginal group consisting of elderly people who had not had the chance to go to school, people with disabilities who were considered to be untrainable, certain immigrant populations, and people who had failed in the school system through some individual weakness. In 1985, in the midst of national concerns about the productivity of the country's labor force, the government of Ontario launched a program of funding for three explicit purposes: 1) to assist literacy programs for adult learners, 2) to support literacy organizations, and 3) to fund a small amount of community based research on adult literacy. The federal government followed suit in 1986, establishing the National Literacy Secretariat in the Department of the Secretary of State for Canada.

One of the skills that is important for students to have in the 21st century is scientific literacy. However, the scientific literacy scores of Indonesian students are still far below international standard scores. This study was to determine the scientific literacy skills of class X IPA high school students in Makassar City in solving PISA questions. The method used is descriptive quantitative. The population includes all students of class X IPA in Makassar City. A sample of 254 people from SMA Negeri 6 Makassar, SMA Negeri 21 Makassar, SMA Negeri 5 Makassar, SMA Negeri 9 Makassar, SMA Negeri 16 Makassar, SMA Negeri 4 Makassar, SMA Negeri 20 Makassar, and SMA Negeri 14 Makassar. The technique of determining the sample by cluster random sampling and simple random sampling. The data collection technique is in the form of multiple-choice questions of 25 numbers. The results of the data analysis showed that the percentage of students' scientific literacy skills was in the moderate category of 50% for 127 people. Furthermore, 12.2% in the high category were 31 people, 5.91% in the very high category were 15 people, 31.89% in the low category were 81 people, and 0% in the very low category were 0 people. The highest average score of scientific literacy skills from the three aspects of scientific literacy competence is found in the item evaluating and designing scientific questions, namely 33.92 in the moderate category.

Every individual needs to survive and even succeed in their life. One of the ways to achieve such success is to be literate. Literacy makes people civilized and knows the purpose of their life. People need to build their awareness of the importance of literacy, one of which is through building reading literacy awareness. This paper aims at building literacy awareness through a community library built for the people in Regaji Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. This is a descriptive study taking the local people living in Regaji Village as the participants. Observations, interviews, and documentation were used to collect the data related to the past and current reading literacy awareness in this village. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the data analysis show that the reading literacy awareness of the local people was still relatively low. However, after the presence of the community library in this village, the literacy awareness of the local people, especially children, has grown, indicated by their increased reading habits. This current situation should be maintained and developed so that all the children in this village keep aware of the importance of reading literacy that eventually helps them get success in their future life.

This study has three objectives. First, to find out the people of Tangerang City perception aboutsharia law regarding saving in Islamic and conventional banks. Second, to find out their Islamicfinancial literacy level. And third, to determine the relationship between their perceptions and theirIslamic financial literacy level. This study uses quantitative methods with primary data collectedby integrating questionnaires in 13 sub-districts in the city of Tangerang. The method used todetermine the number of samples is the Slovin formula, while data analysis uses the Kendall’sTau correlation. This study produced several findings. First, the perception of the Tangerang citypeople about the law of saving in Islamic banks is dominated by the answer recommended, whilethe saving law in conventional banks according to the majority of the people of Tangerang City ispermissible. Second, the level of sharia financial literacy in Tangerang City is low, with the lowestindicators are their skills in using Islamic financial services. Third, there is a strong relationshipbetween the people of Tangerang City perception about sharia law saving in banks with the levelof Islamic financial literacy.

Overall literacy talents comprise an individual’s capacity to read, write and recognise written information (print literacy), articulate and interpret oral language (oral literacy) and interpret and apply for numbers in everyday activities (numeracy). Health literacy, a subset of overall literacy talents, is relatively correlated with it and has been described as the extent to which people can gain, approach, and understand introductory medical information and services required to take health decisions. Concerning HIV, people with low health literacy have less information on the illness and their medical care needs. Moreover, they show poor drug compliance, potentially leading to treatment failure and lack of achievement of the target viral load reduction. The shortfall of non-conceptual models of health literacy is an issue in the utilization of general proficiency instruments. HIV disease-specific health literacy instruments would be more useful and likely to provide more meaningful results rather than those obtained through the use of general instruments. Further exploration of HIV health literacy is demanded. Prospective studies should involve different geographical areas with different socioeconomic characteristics, societal structures and regional healthcare settings. This narrative review has limitations. The vast majority of the HIV research referenced in this study was conducted among the western and African populations with HIV. The studies generally excluded individuals over 50 years of age, restricting the applicability of the study findings.

Introduction: Being health literate is important to get sufficient health information, to navigate the health system, to access appropriate care and to be able to self-manage health. As such it is a key determinant of health. There is a need for innovative measures to improve health literacy among people living in socioeconomically vulnerable circumstances. In response to this need, a low treshold community health literacy hub was developed and implemented in a vulnerable neighbourhood in the city of Antwerp, within a broader project on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (H2020 SPICES project) The health kiosk provides information on a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention in a low-threshold manner to people and groups in a socially vulnerable situation. These are the people for whom the current preventive offer is insufficiently accessible; because it is not sufficiently attuned to diversity in language and culture, it is insufficiently accessible or available, or because people have so many other concerns on their minds that they have less mental space to actively engage with health. Who is involved? The Health Kiosk is a partnership between Logo Antwerp, University of Antwerp, Antwerp District. Another important collaboration is with the Community Health Workers. These are people from the communities involved who direct people, often non-native speakers, to care. They speak to people in their own language, thus removing an important barrier. This cooperation also allows us to make good links between the preventive offer and primary care. To further operationalise the operation of the kiosk, ELZ Oost will also be involved. The focus will also be on first-line professionals. Results: The health kiosk grew out of the need to increase health literacy among vulnerable target groups, those who live under the radar. Yet the effect of the kiosk appears to go much further. The whole community gets involved: not just residents, but also organisations from different sectors, as well as the working population. Over the past year, the kiosk has become well embedded in the neighbourhood. A broad base of support has been created. Outreach work presupposes a lifeworld perspective. You can only succeed if you really connect with the living environment of local residents. Participative work is therefore indispensable when doing outreach work. It is crucial to involve people from the community right from the start of the project. Next steps: Now we need to take a step further. Looking to the future, it is important to link up even more with first-line professionals such as GPs, pharmacists, home nursing, etc. The pressure on first-line professionals, especially GPs, is high.

The purpose of this review is to examine valid and reliable tools used to assess HL among people in LMICs.MethodsA literature search of three databases was conducted with 20 final articles.ResultsCurrent HL assessment tools used in LMICs rely on participant's literacy and focus on measuring people's functional HL rather than reflecting the evolving definitions of HL.ConclusionsMore research needs to be conducted to better understand how people with limited literacy acquire and apply HL, and HL assessment tools need to assess various aspects of HL beyond one's functional HL.

Patients' ability to engage in complex disease management and self-care is strongly related to their level of health literacy. It can help us stay healthy by preventing illness and effectively managing existing illnesses. Personal health literacy refers to a person's ability to locate, comprehend, and apply information and services to support health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. The World Health Organization recommends health literacy as a tool for achieving several key targets outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals. Low health literacy (LHL) is most commonly associated with mature patients with chronic health conditions who have limited education and are not necessarily from a lower income group. Furthermore, being literate in general does not imply being literate in health.

People are currently facing high unemployment rates, and one of the main causes is financial literacy. Financial literacy is critically important for people as it enables them to effectively manage their money and decide whether to invest or save. Furthermore, everyone must be educated from an early age about financial issues because they will be taught about how to save, invest, budget, and borrow. The purpose of this article is to investigate the scientific literature on financial education and employment. To this end, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of financial literacy and the relationship between financial literacy and employment. The research methodology included a bibliometric analysis conducted with the VOSviewer software. The results highlight low rates of financial literacy in terms of knowledge, behaviour and attitude. The main determinants of poor financial literacy include poor financial education in schools, disinterest of people in the subject, limited accessibility to financial resources, and insufficient involvement of people in financial issues. Policy makers must take into account this unfavourable situation with respect to the state of financial literacy and implement actions to address it.

IntroductionThis study explored the unknown psychiatric literacy of the public with regard to the Personality Disorders (PDs).ObjectivesTo find out -i)Whether a lay person recognises the presence of a psychological problem in a person with a PD.ii)What labels lay people give to people living with PDs.iii)How lay people rate the quality of life of people living with PDs.iv)Whether a history of psychological education or illness improves a lay person's ability to identify a PD.AimsTo assess how much work is needed to be done in order to increase public psychiatric literacy to a satisfactory level with regard to the PDs.MethodsA vignette identification methodology was employed. 223 participants responded to the questionnaire Eccentric people’. Results: Lay people recognise people with PDs as being unhappy, unsuccessful at work and as having poor personal relationships, but do not associate these problems with psychological causes. Rates of correct labelling were low; under 7% for 7/10 PDs. History of psychological education and illness were positively correlated with the correct recognition of 70% and 60% of the personality disorders respectively.ConclusionsThe psychiatric literacy of the public with regard to the PDs is low. This raises concerns about the health seeking behaviour and correct diagnosis of sufferers, as well as the stigma attached to them and their social neglect by others. Psychiatric literacy needs to be increased, psychological education achieves this. The media could be an effective tool to increase psychiatric literacy.

AbstractWe use data from the Swedish Financial Supervisory 2010 consumer survey to look at levels of financial literacy and retirement planning in the Swedish population. The results indicate that many adults have low financial literacy. In general, financial literacy levels are lower among the young, the old, women and those with low income or low educational attainment. People who report having tried to plan for retirement have higher levels of financial literacy. In particular, an understanding of risk diversification is strongly correlated with planning for retirement. We relate our findings to features of the Swedish pension system.

This study is a quantitative study that aimed to find the level of financial literacy of Papuan Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the factors that influence it. The sample consisted of 75 respondents of MSME actors in Jayapura city at Pasar Mama-Mama Papua. The data was analyzed using multiple linear regression method with SPSS version 22.0. The results showed that (1) the level of financial literacy in Jayapura city is low, (2) there is no influence of gender towards the level of financial literacy, (3) there is an influence of last educational level towards the level of financial literacy, (4) there is no influence of monthly profit towards the level of financial literacy, (5) there is an influence of investment towards the level of financial literacy, (6) there is an influence of borrowing and saving in bank towards the level of financial literacy, (7) there is an influence of insurance towards the level of financialliteracy.

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the relationship between inadequate functional health literacy and inadequate blood pressure control in older people with hypertension in Primary Health Care. Method: a cross-sectional study with sample calculated at 392. SAHLPA-18 tool was used for functional health literacy; blood pressure was measured; sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Hierarchical logistic regression was used. Results: (high) inadequate blood pressure and (low) functional inadequate health literacy were present in 41.6% and 54.6% of the people, respectively. Factors associated with inadequate blood pressure were: inadequate functional health literacy, black-brown skin color, overweight-obesity, hypertension diagnosis time, non-adherence to exercise/diet, drug treatment. Schooling had no association with inadequate blood pressure Conclusion: hypertensive elderly people with inadequate health literacy were more likely to have inadequate blood pressure. Thus, health professionals need to value functional health literacy as a possible component to control blood pressure.

Objective: Oral health promotion resources need to be simple, useful, accessible and understandable to be effective. The importance of this is magnified for population groups who are at increased risk of poor oral health, have low literacy or language barriers. Consultation with health service providers identified the need for a readability tool to assist them to assess and develop appropriate oral health promotion resources to ensure they were written using language that was easy to understand by those with high oral health needs and low literacy levels. The objective of this study was to identify and adapt existing health literacy and readability tools and pilot the tool to determine its appropriateness for use in oral health promotion targeting those with high oral health needs and low literacy levels. Design: This paper reports the development of an oral health readability tool. Methods: Existing readability tools were identified through electronic searching and reviewed for suitability. In parallel, written oral health resources used in Australia specifically targeting refugee and asylum seeker population were identified through discussions with oral health service providers and an online grey literature search. Results: No single tool was identified which could be readily used to screen and assess written oral health resources. Two existing tools, the Fry readability formula and a suitability checklist, were therefore adapted and integrated into one tool. This new readability tool was then piloted by screening 10 written oral health resources currently in use in the public oral health sector for refugee and asylum seeker populations. Of the 10 written oral health resources assessed, only 4 were of an appropriate reading level for clients with low literacy. Conclusion: This study developed and tested an oral health readability tool to assess and develop oral health promotion resources.

Abstract This article investigates American Indian literacy in the United States. Using 1900 through 1930 decennial census data, literacy levels and trends in reading and writing are documented for this period and for people born from 1820 through 1920, providing a large-scale historical picture of American Indian literacy. The pace and extent of literacy is documented from very low for those born during the early 1800s to fairly universal for those born during the early 1900s. Increases in Native literacy are demonstrated to have been closely related to birth year, with successive birth years having higher levels of literacy. Little evidence was found that increases from 1900 to 1930 happened because people increased their literacy after the school years and as they matured through adulthood. A close birth year level relationship between literacy and one year of school attainment was also found.

The paper takes a critical view on the prevalent approaches to developing financial literacy programs. It has been shown that meta-analytical and review studies indicate low efficiency of financial literacy improvement programs: their effect on financial behavior is either statistically insignificant or statistically significant, but practically negligible. Among potential reasons of financial literacy programs low efficiency the role of behavioral factors in financial decision making and the impossibility of determining “financially literate” behavior from the perspective of an outside observer are considered. It is concluded that the currently dominant criteria for assessing financially competent behavior can be characterized either as procedural, within which not the consequences of financial decisions are considered, but how consciously they are taken, or as normative, within which the government differentiates the consumers attitudes into wrong and right. Both groups of criteria are based on a non-economic understanding of rationality.

Data analysis uses descriptive statistics, then the results of the analysis will be classified using a financial literacy model initiated by Chen & Volpe (1998). The population in this study was the people of Tasikmalaya City with a sample of 180 people using random sampling techniques. The results revealed that the level of financial literacy of Leasing institutions in Tasikmalaya City was 60.04%, which was categorized into a medium level of financial literacy. In detail, the Principle Aspect has the highest score with an average score of 63% which is still classified as medium literacy. Furthermore, the Benefit Aspect and Risk Aspect which have the same value of 61% are also reflected at a medium level of literacy. Meanwhile, the Product Aspect is classified as low by having an average score of 56%.

This community service program is motivated by the low level of literacy skills of the Indonesian people. This fact proves that the literacy value of Indonesian people reading is still very low. According to TBM West Java data in 2017, the Tasikmalaya region in the districts and cities has more than ten scattered community reading parks, but most have not been maximally utilized by the surrounding community, especially for the availability of English books. Seeing the above phenomenon, it is necessary to have a solution in the community. This community service program offers a language literacy program using the Extensive Reading method as an effort to foster community literacy. The main reason for this literacy program is that literacy is the right of everyone and is the basis for learning throughout time. This program combines foreign language learning with community literacy programs. This activity involved TBM managers and children as participants in the activity. The Extensive Reading method is used in community service programs to foster community literacy. The results of these community service activities include a literacy program that introduces extensive reading methods in improving integrated and effective English language skills to help equalize education through integrated reading services in Nagarasari, Tasikmalaya city

Objective – This study aimed to investigate the level of understanding of financial knowledge and the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning of working-age people. Methodology/Technique – The participants of the study were residents of Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan, Thailand. The questionnaire is the research tool for collecting data with 1,200 adults, aged between 25-60. This study will use a descriptive statistical analysis to describe frequency, percentage, mean and mode. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method is widely used to describe the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning. Findings – The result show that the level of education has a positive relationship with financial literacy. Most of middle lower income people have a moderate to low level of the basic financial literacy and are not involved in retirement planning. The respondents of women in Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan have more understanding of retirement planning than men; this result is different to the previous research undertaken by Lusardi and Mitchell (2011), Bucher-Koenen and Lusardi (2011) Grohmann et al. (2016). Novelty – This paper will study the level of understanding of financial knowledge and the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning of working-age people. Most of the previous research concentrated on people who live in the big city; there was. little focus on people living in the countryside, especially in the Northeastern part of Thailand. Not too many papers have focused on the working-age people, who in due course will contribute to Thailand becoming an Aging Society. It could help to the government, labor union, Bureau of Financial Inclusion Policy and Development and related departments to know the level of financial knowledge and retirement planning. So, they could provide guidance of financial literacy to community. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the mean proficiency in literacy among adults in the US and Canada is at Level 2. Adults at this level cannot process dense texts, eliminate irrelevant information, perform multi-step operations, or evaluate the reliability of a source. The Reading Tutor is a website that was created to help low-literacy adults improve their English. It will be free to use the website that is personalized to the literacy level of every user. Creating a website allows people to increase their literacy levels without facing the stigma that comes with attending a class in person. Adults are inclined to improve their English because it often affects their career potential, socio-economic status, and health. The Reading Tutor has two major components: the passages and the scenarios. Passages are stories that the user can read and answer questions about. Scenarios are plots with questions that the user must answer to move on. In recent work, the information for each scenario was organized into spreadsheets to simplify the process of entering data into the code. The system architecture consists of HTML, CSS, Javascript, MySQL, Python, and Django. The newest development in this project was the improvement of the user intake experience. Before starting the passages and scenarios, the website collects information from each adult. The user "interests" pages are the latest additions to the site and these pages ask about the user’s hobbies. That data will then be used to incorporate their interests into later questions. It was important to add this feature to the website because relevance is a motivator for the user demographic. The next steps for the website are to log the user’s interests into the database. Future enhancements also include the creation of more scenarios to accommodate to the different user interests.

Financial literacy plays a crucial role in individuals’ decision-making processes. The paper aims to thoroughly identify the financial literacy needs and challenges of adults with low financial literacy living in rural areas. The paper presents the results of a focus group study conducted among a target group (35 people) and interviews with financial experts (14 people) in the first quarter of 2023. The study allows us to identify common areas of financial knowledge crucial for adults with low financial literacy living in rural areas. The study was conducted in seven European countries as part of the Erasmus+ project “Learning by Experiencing Escape Rooms: Financial Literacy for Adults (FLER)”. Key findings from the study revealed that participants exhibited low awareness of financial fraud and expressed a need to protect personal information when using digital platforms. There was a clear demand for improved knowledge in certain areas, such as budgeting, emergency funds, balancing risk and reward, and planning for retirement or long-term savings. Participants consistently viewed gamification as a valuable tool for enhancing their understanding of financial topics. The contribution of our study is that we narrow the research gap on the needs and challenges related to financial literacy among rural residents. The results will help pinpoint specific areas of financial knowledge and competencies that are particularly important for adults with low financial literacy. Moreover, these insights are crucial for developing educational content integrated into a virtual escape room to improve financial literacy through engaging, scenario-based learning.

AbstractIntroduction. The concept of health literacy is often used as “health competence”, “health ability. It involves the skills and motivation of people to obtain and understand health information. To improve health understanding and assessment of health literacy, many instruments have been developed to measure health competences in different populations. Among them there is the multidimensional, comprehensive questionnaire HLS-EU-Q16, developed by the Consortium of European Countries.Aim. Review of health literacy studies using the European Health Competence Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16) based on literature analysis.Method. Thematic review, unsystematic literature covering the years 2010-2018. The number of 17 source items was analyzed by the authors.Results. The overall level of health literacy was higher in European research than in non-European research. Low levels of health literacy were found in the elderly and chronically ill, immigrants and prisoners, as well as people with low education. The analysis of the research shows that the limited health skills of the respondents are related to the deterioration of the functional state and cognitive skills in the elderly. The decisive determinant of the low level of health literacy among immigrants and prisoners is unemployment and low level of education. Adequate health education plays a key role in improving the social level of health awareness and contributes to the long-term health of the entire population.

The concept of digital literacy has been defined in numerous ways over the last two decades to incorporate rapid technological changes, its versatility, and to bridge the global digital divide. Most approaches have been technology-centric with an inherent assumption of cultural and political neutrality of new media technologies. There are multiple hurdles in every stage of digital literacy implementation. The lack of solutions such as local language digital interfaces, locally relevant content, digital literacy training, the use of icons and audio excludes a large fraction of illiterate people. In this article, we analyse case studies targeted at under-connected people in sub-Saharan Africa and India that use digital literacy programmes to build knowledge and health literacy, solve societal problems and foster development. In India, we focus on notable initiatives undertaken in the domain of digital literacy for rural populations. In Sub-Saharan Africa, we draw from an original project in Kenya aiming at developing digital literacy for youth from low-income backgrounds. We further focus on Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Tanzania, where field studies have been conducted on the use of digital technologies by low-literacy people and on how audio and icon-based interfaces and Internet lite standard could help them overcome their limitations. The main objective of this article is to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) in the context of digital literacy skills as one of the pillars for digital inclusion. We will learn how digital literacy programmes can be used to build digital literacy and how KPIs for sustainable development can be established. In the final discussion, we offer lessons learned from the case studies and further recommendation for stakeholders and decision-makers in the field of digital health literacy.

Literature suggests that the penetration of digital technology may create a digital divide, particularly for groups that lack resources and the capacity to access technology. This study is keen to examine the poverty and digital divide, particularly in urban poor areas. There are two research objectives. Firstly, to examine the digital diffusion and digital literacy within poor urban neighborhoods in the City of Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. Secondly, to understand the variation of digital diffusion and digital literacy across areas (with different levels of poverty), age groups, genders and occupations. The data is collected from surveys focused on measuring the access to information, digital diffusion and the use of technology among the poor. This study found that there is a digital divide problem among people in urban areas, especially among people with low incomes. Moreover, the diffusion is dominated by certain groups such as younger people and females. Furthermore, digital literacy among the poor is low. The policy implication is to improve access for digital diffusion and provide assistance to improve digital literacy skills.

As people agree that socioeconomic status (SES) is one of the contributing factors that hinders one’s literacy development, there are still students who come from low socioeconomic background yet are able to acquire high English literacy despite the presence of life stressors. This study examines the challenges faced by low SES students in acquiring high English literacy and the factors that help them to overcome those challenges. Three students aged fourteen to sixteen years old were chosen as the sample for this study through purposive sampling technique. A qualitative semi-structured interview was conducted to obtain in-depth information about the topic discussed. Three themes emerged which include individual, family and school that demonstrated the challenges faced by low SES students in acquiring high English literacy and the factors that helped them to overcome those challenges. In brief, the participants agreed that their internal motivation and hard work were the most important factors that kept them positive to fight against challenges and become highly literate in the English language. Health rumors not only incite unnecessary fears and skepticism, but may also cause individuals to refuse effective remedy and thus delay their treatment. Studies have found that health literacy may help the public identify the falsity of health rumors and avoid their negative impact. However, whether other types of literacy work in helping people disbelieve health rumors is still unknown. With a national survey in China (N = 1646), our study examined the effect of science literacy on rumor belief and further analyzed the moderating role of self-efficacy of science literacy in their relationship. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that science literacy significantly decreased the likelihood of people believing in health rumors, and moderator analysis showed that self-efficacy of science literacy plays a moderating role in this relationship; such that the relationship between science literacy and health rumor belief would be weakened if one′s self-efficacy of science literacy was low. This finding reveals that during campaigns to combat health rumors, improving and enhancing the self-efficacy of people′s science literacy is an effective way to prevent them from believing in health rumors. Our study highlights the benefits of science education in public health and the improvement of public science literacy.

Indonesia is one of the countries with a fairly low literacy rate. Most Indonesian people do not realize the importance of literacy. Even some people do not understand what literacy is. Literacy is a form of reading, writing, and listening activities, which are accompanied by critical thinking so that they are accustomed to solving problems. Reading and writing both have not become a culture in Indonesia. In fact, the development of science and culture must start from both. The reading hut located at SDN 105322 Desa Mesjid has not been functioning properly. That’s why KKN 214 UINSU participants are trying to implement the reading cottage which will certainly increase interest in reading in children, especially students of SDN 105322 Desa Mesjid.
