AbstractThe impact of compensable injury on moods was investigated in 106 individuals using the Visual Analog Mood Scales. Results indicated markedly negatively skewed distributions of ratings on being Sad, Energetic, Tired, Happy, or Tense. A contrasting pattern of positive and negative mood responses was evident. There were notable differences in mood conditions between different types of injuries: (a) anger and tiredness featured in brain injury; (b) sadness and tiredness characterized psychological injuries; and (c) most moods were moderate across musculoskeletal injuries with the possible exception of being energetic. The extent of psychological problems was related to mood levels.

This investigation sought to extend the existing scientific literature regarding the role of psychological processes in athletic injury rehabilitation. Specifically, the study examined (a) psychological responses of injured athletes to season-ending injuries, and (b) long-term benefits athletes perceived they obtained from their injuries. In-depth interviews were conducted with US Ski Team athletes (N = 21) who experienced injuries during racing seasons from 1990 to 1994. The data were analyzed using the content analysis procedures described by Scanlan, Stein, and Ravizza (1989). Relative to athletes’ reactions to being injured, 136 raw data themes were extracted which coalesced into 4 general dimensions: (a) injury-relevant information processing/awareness, (b) emotional upheaval/reactive behavior, (c) positive outlook/coping attempts, and (d) other. With respect to injury benefits, 81 raw data themes emerged and formed 4 dimensions: (a) personal growth, (b) psychologically- based performance enhancements, (c) physical-technical development, and (d) none. The results are discussed in relation to existing models of injury recovery and stress.

Half of all work-related injuries in the fire service are musculoskeletal-based due to slips, trips, and overexertion. This study evaluated the effects of physical exertion on balance in firefighters. Forty-one firefighters completed a physical exertion protocol with static and dynamic balance assessments while in personal protective equipment. Following the physical exertion protocol, we identified a significant decrease in anterior reach of the right limb, and significant increases in rectangular displacement area in both double- and single-legged stances. Balance is diminished in firefighters wearing personal protective equipment after engaging in a short bout of physical activity, suggesting a potential risk factor for lower extremity injury in the fire service.

The aims of this prospective study were to analyze factors related to the occurrence of severe football injuries in players of different ages (14 to 42 years) and different skill levels (local teams to first league teams). In the Czech Republic, 398 players were followed up for 1 year, during which time they sustained 686 injuries. Of these, 113 (16.5%) were severe injuries. Ninety-seven severe injuries (86%) were able to be documented in detail. Trauma was the cause of 81.5% of the injuries and overuse was the cause of 18.5%. Joint sprains predominated (30%), followed by fractures (16%), muscle strains (15%), ligament ruptures (12%), meniscal tears and contusions (8%), and other injuries. Injuries to the knee were most prevalent (29%), followed by injuries to the ankle (19%) and spine (9%). More injuries occurred during games (59%) than in practice. Twenty-four percent of the injured players had suffered a previous injury of the same body part. Forty-six percent of injuries were caused by contact and 54% involved no body contact. Thirty-one percent of severe injuries were caused by foul play. From these results and the analysis of injuries in specific body parts, the following factors were determined to influence the occurrence of severe injuries: 1) personal factors (intrinsic): age of player, previous injuries, joint instability, abnormality of the spine, poor physical condition, poor football skills, or inadequate treatment and rehabilitation of injuries; 2) environmental factors (extrinsic): subjective exercise overload during practices and games, amount and quality of training, playing field conditions, equipment (wearing of shin guards and taping) and violations of existing rules (foul play).

Context: Part-time personnel are an integral part of the Australian Army. With operational deployments increasing, it is essential that medical teams identify the patterns of injuries sustained by part-time personnel in order to mitigate the risks of injury and optimize deployability. Objective: To compare the patterns of reported work health and safety incidents and injuries in part-time and full-time Australian Army personnel. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: The Australian Army. Patients or Other Participants: Australian Army Reserve and Australian regular Army populations, July 1, 2012, through June 30, 2014. Main Outcome Measure(s): Proportions of reported work health and safety incidents that resulted in injuries among Army Reserve and regular Army personnel and specifically the (a) body locations affected by incidents, (b) nature of resulting injuries, (c) injury mechanisms, and (d) activities being performed when the incidents occurred. Results: Over 2 years, 15 065 work health and safety incidents and 11 263 injuries were reported in Army Reserve and regular Army populations combined. In the Army Reserve population, 85% of reported incidents were classified as involving minor personal injuries; 4% involved a serious personal injury. In the regular Army population, 68% of reported incidents involved a minor personal injury; 5% involved a serious personal injury. Substantially lower proportions of Army reservist incidents involved sports, whereas substantially higher proportions were associated with combat training, manual handling, and patrolling when compared with regular Army incidents. Conclusions: Army reservists had a higher proportion of injuries from Army work-related activities than did regular Army soldiers. Proportions of incidents arising from combat tasks and manual handling were higher in the Army Reserve. Understanding the sources of injuries will allow the medical teams to implement injury-mitigation strategies.

The system involves obtaining, medical-legal evidence on the diagnosis, causation, treatment and prognosis of any injuries, physical or psychological. One key aspect of this covers the crucial issue of evidential reliability. This paper explains the key questions facing lawyers and experts alike in the UK; fundamental postulates or beliefs about evidence; ways to improve reliability; the relevance of pre-event history and improving evidential reliability via Part 35 questioning. The UK, along with the USA, has the most advanced and developed system of personal injury litigation process.

The present study aimed to determine the epidemiology of sport-related injuries in amateur and professional adolescent athletes and the incidence of different risk factors on those injuries. Four hundred ninety-eight athletes aged 14 to 21 voluntarily participated in this prospective injury surveillance, conducted from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019. The information collected included: personal data, sports aspects, characteristics of the injuries, and lifestyle. Forty point four percent of the participants suffered an injury in 2019 (39% of them in a previously injured area). The average injury rate was 2.64 per 1000 h. Soccer presented the highest rate (7.21). The most common injuries were: lumbar muscle strains (12.24%), ankle sprains (11.98%), and bone fractures (9.31%). Ankles (36.12%), knees (19.32%), and shoulders (6.47%) concentrated the highest number of injuries. Fifty-nine point twenty-eight percent of the injuries occurred during practices, and 40.72% during competition or peri-competition. Higher injury rates were associated (in this order) with the following factors: (a) Greater number of hours of practice per week. (b) Not performing warm-ups. (c) Using inadequate sports facilities. (d) Being aged 14–17. (e) Not performing physical preparation. (f) Inappropriate training load. (g) Not performing injury-preventive activities. (h) Performing sports technique without the supervision of one sports coach. (i) Inadequate sports equipment. In conclusion, since most injury risk factors are modifiable, it is imperative to implement strategies to reduce amateur and professional adolescent athletes’ injury rates.

AbstractPsychologists’ adherence with evidence-based guidelines based on the biopsychosocial premise in the management of musculoskeletal injuries is influenced by the actions by General Practitioners (GPs), insurers, and injured patients’ actions. For data collection, we interviewed GPs (n = 6), insurers (n = 6), and injured people (n = 15) from the two personal injury compensation schemes in New South Wales. Thematic analysis yielded the following: GPs were reticent to access psychological services that represented a poor fit between their practice and treatment guidelines, insurers lacked trust in the validity of “secondary psychological injury” claims’. Injured peoples’ willingness to engage with treatment was impaired by a poor fit between the treatment guidelines and their experience of insurers’ and psychologists’ practices.

Bakgrund: Det finns i tidigare studier beskrivna problem så som implementering och följsamhet när det gäller skadeförebyggande träningsprogram (SPP) för fotbollsspelare.   Syfte: Syftet med studien är att kartlägga och undersöka om kvinnliga och manliga fotbollslag i Stockholm utför ett SPP samt om det finns något samband med deras tillgång till medicinsk personal. Syftet är också att undersöka om det finns någon skillnad på tillgången till medicinsk personal och utförande av SPP mellan kvinnliga och manliga fotbollsspelare.   Metod: Enkäten skickades ut till 133 manliga och kvinnliga fotbollsspelare från samma fotbollsklubb. Enkäten innehöll 14 frågor om tillgång till medicinsk personal, information om skadeförebyggande träning samt utförande av SPP.   Resultat: Totalt 82 fotbollsspelare besvarade enkäten.  Majoriteten av deltagarna uppgav att de har tillgång till medicinsk personal. Fler manliga än kvinnliga fotbollsspelare har tillgång till medicinsk personal (P=0,018). Ingen korrelation visades mellan att ha tillgång till medicinsk personal och att ha fått information om skadeförebyggande träning (P=0,45). 66% av deltagarna angav att de utför ett SPP. Tillgång till medicinsk personal korrelerade med utförande av ett SPP (P=0,04).   Slutsats: Medicinsk personal verkar ha en betydelse när det gäller utförande av ett skadeförebyggande träningsprogram. Background: There are described problems with implementation and compliance in previous studies when it comes to Injury Prevention Programs (IPP) for soccer players.   Aim: The aim of this study was to examine if female and male soccer teams in Stockholm are performing an IPP in relation to their access to medical staff. The aim was also to examine if there are any difference between male and female soccer players in their access to medical staff and performing of an IPP.   Method: The survey was delivered to 133 male and female soccer players from the same soccer club. The survey involved 14 questions about medical staff, information about injury prevention training and performance of an IPP.   Results: Totally 82 soccer players answered the survey. The majority of the participants indicated that they have access to medical staff. More male than female soccer players indicated access to medical staff (P=0,018). No correlation was found between access to medical staff and have gotten information about injury prevention training (P=0,45). 66% of the participants indicated that they were performing an IPP. The access to medical staff correlated to the performing of an IPP (P=0,04).   Conclusion: Medical staff seems to have an impact when it comes to performing of an IPP. Further research is needed to motivate soccer teams to take advantage of medical staff with their injury prevention training.

O presente trabalho tem por finalidade apresentar algumas contribuições da Medicina Legal para a compreensão da violência doméstica contra a mulher. Para tanto, o trabalho parte de uma visão geral sobre a violência como fenômeno social para se chegar à ideia de violência de gênero, na qual a violência doméstica contra a mulher se encontra inserida. Após, são apresentados alguns documentos internacionais sobre violência contra a mulher para se chegar ao processo de formação da Lei nº 11.340/06. As inovações da Lei nº 11.340/06 quanto ao crime de lesão corporal são apresentadas a seguir, culminando com a apresentação de tópicos de relevância médico-legal pertinentes à questão da violência doméstica contra a mulher.
The present work aims to present some contributions of Forensic Medicine to understanding domestic violence against women. To this end, the work presents an overview of violence as a social phenomenon to arrive at the idea of gender violence, in which domestic violence against women is inserted. In the following, some international documents on violence against women are presented to reach at Lei nº 11.340/06s formation process. The innovations of Lei nº 11.340/06 regarding the crime of personal physical injury are presented below, culminating with the presentation of relevant topics pertaining to the medical-legal issue of domestic violence against women.

Introduction: Road traffic injuries are the ninth leading cause of death globally. Projections indicate that without new and sustained commitment globally to preventing such injuries, the situation will only worsen. Motor vehicle rescue does not lend itself to the prevention of road traffic incidents but through ensuring that all incidents are managed using sound evidence could contribute in positive outcomes for victims. It is unknown what contribution rescue education makes to the body of medical rescue knowledge in South Africa. Aims: The aim of this research was to investigate the relevance and scope of the principles of physics within medical rescue specifically in the context of motor vehicle rescue. It appears that current traditional methods of presenting rescue training, which is mainly procedural and technical, may contribute to 'segmented' learning. Research Methodology: Using an interpretive research design, multiple qualitative methodologies were employed. This methodological triangulation was intended to improve construct validity and trustworthiness of findings. A modified Delphi process through which questionnaires was repeatedly distributed to rescue experts was employed. Process tracing was used to evaluate the developed typical motor vehicle rescue case scenario narrative for underpinnings of the principles of physics. The Bachelor Emergency Medical Care Physics and Extrication subject guides was evaluated for its educational alignment during the document analysis. Legitimation Code theory as a theoretical framework was utilised to appraise the knowledge gap. Results & Discussion: Motor vehicle rescue incident may not always present in a similar manner due to various factors and influences. Development of the typical motor vehicle case narrative from which its physics principles could be identified was imperative. Most motor vehicle rescue related training occur with the vehicle in the upright orientation on all four wheels. This manner of frequent training may restrict rescue practitioners from moving beyond their 'typical' training knowledge when the situation presents a typical. The thematic document analysis of the BEMC Physics and Extrication subject guides lacked the necessary coherence which is required for a professional degree. It was deemed void of certain threshold concepts and structure which would allow the student to move between the theoretical and contextual knowledge. Motor vehicle rescue subject guides and most textbooks on the topic leaned towards a procedural and very technically detailed pedagogy, to the extent that it could contribute to segmented learning. Conclusion: Developing curricula that is underpinned by a theoretically sound evidence base would promote credibility of a qualification. Curricula by design inform the teaching, learning and the competencies which would ultimately be assessed. Professional degrees are intended to develop practitioners who would graduate with the knowledge and competencies to adapt to situations. In addition, graduate attributes of lifelong learning, reflective practice and the ability to contribute to the development of new knowledge is secondary to the goal of qualification attainment.

This chapter traces the origins of Disaster Action, which lie in the personal experiences of individuals. A number of disasters occurred between 1985 and 1989, each involving many deaths and injuries — physical and psychological — within relatively quick succession. After each major disaster of the 1980s, relatives, friends, and survivors formed support groups to help those directly affected. The questions of how and why people had died and been injured and how similar disasters might be prevented in the future drove those from different backgrounds, of all religious persuasions and none, to come together. Each group had its own focus — for Zeebrugge, ro-ro ferry safety; for Lockerbie, airline and airport security; for the Marchioness, a full inquest and riverboat safety. These groups worked tirelessly to cope with and campaign on issues relating to their own tragic circumstances, lobbying government and other interest groups. The chapter then details how the disparate individuals and groups affected by this series of preventable tragedies in the 1980s come together to form the umbrella association that was to be Disaster Action. Ultimately, Disaster Action was established out of a collective will to see a more just and safer Britain.

This chapter discusses the tort of deceit. The common-law rules concerning liability for dishonesty were synthesised to create the tort of deceit at the end of the eighteenth century in Pasley v. Freeman, and the tort takes its modern form from the decision of the House of Lords in Derry v. Peek in 1889. Most of the cases concern non-physical damage, that is to say, financial or pure economic loss, although the tort can also extend to cover personal injuries and damage to property. The requirements of liability are as follows: the defendant must make a false statement of existing fact with knowledge of its falsity and with the intention that the claimant should act on it, with the result (4) that the claimant acts on it to his detriment.

A common misconception is that health concerns in the workplace are only relevant in manual-labor fields or work zones that deal with hazardous materials or tools. In modern society, however, nearly every workplace can benefit from studying and applying techniques and understanding that regard the human body and its proper alignment or use. While damage to a secretary’s wrists from day after day of typing on a carelessly-designed keyboard might be as dramatic or immediate as a laborer’s foot being crushed by a dropped concrete slab, such subtle injuries can be just as debilitating and dangerous over time. Ergonomics, as a field, addresses the appropriate alignment and use of the body in all sorts of activities. The current school of thinking focuses on proactive human action; however, the scant notice that ergonomics has gleaned has only been brought on because of the injuries incurred when the proactive approach has been ignored. So, ironically enough, the proactive-themed field has only gained any notice or recognition due to reactive action. Due to the efforts of the US Department of Labor (or, more specifically, the Occupational Safety and Health Association [OSHA]), the field of ergonomics has received increased press and familiarity with the general public in recent years. However, this identity has still largely been focused on workplace safety in factories or manual labor, certainly not seemingly benign and harmless office environments. The general public is rarely made aware of the long-term effects of improper posture from using increasingly ubiquitous office/computer technologies because it is not associated with such heavy labor (Bright, 2006). Nagourney (2002) has done one of many studies which demonstrate that even simple corrections to posture and equipment positioning can result in improved physical health for computer users (Also see ECCE, 2006). Also of note is that numerous studies have documented that leaving small repetitive injuries uncorrected (e.g., injuries that result from improper posture while using computers and other office equipment) has been found to culminate in health problems over time (Ullrich & Ullrich Burke, 2006). Because of these findings and the direct benefits of changing position and movement, public, workplace, and formal education needs to be improved. Rather than isolated or temporary injuries, individuals in these conditions experience compounding effects of improper postures resulting in continuing, repetitive (oftentimes unnoticeable) injuries. Therefore OSHA and a broad base of professionals need to continue to educate the general public so that they understand that ergonomics is more than health and safety codes for manual labor or what may be generally perceived as physically harmful workplace situations. At the same time, both personal and public responsibility for health and safety needs to be exercised in communicating information and solutions, and then implementing them in daily practice.

The COVID-19 pandemic has vastly accelerated the adoption of telehealth and digital health apps by patients and clinicians, and the digital health field will only continue to expand as developers increasingly harness artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities, coupled with precision medicine capabilities that integrate personal health data tracking and genomics insights. Here we begin with an overview of several types of MDA, before discussing the epidemiology of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, clinical considerations in selecting a digital health solution, payor reimbursement for digital apps, and regulatory oversight of digital health apps.

A popular comorbidity of spinal cord injuries is physical deconditioning that frequently prejudice the person to increased risk for secondary non-communicable diseases, such as non-dependent insulin diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, cardiorespiratory diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis and osteoarthritis. Clinical literature has shown that spinal cord injured individuals have a poor cardiometabolic risk profile that amplifies the likelihood of secondary non-communicable diseases. Components of physical deconditioning include muscle atrophy, decreased aerobic capacity, inflexibility and diminished muscle and endurance. Another problem associated with spinal cord injuries is reliance or dependence on others. The combination of poor physical conditioning and dependence on others often adversely impacts on the individual’s quality of life, limiting their social interaction with others. The adherence to habitual physical activity and exercises has shown to increase conditioning status, improve health and wellbeing, increase independence, and improve confidence and self-image and successful re-integration in community. Therefore it is of paramount importance to increase awareness of the benefits of habitual physical activity and exercise to spinal cord injured patients, medical and clinical practitioners, family and friends. This chapter intends to highlight the health benefits of habitual physical activity in relation to selected secondary non-communicable diseases, and, the importance of interprofessional clinical and therapeutic team strategy to improve the spinal cord injured individuals’ quality of life.

Morse code has been shown to be a valuable tool in assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication, and rehabilitation for some people with various conditions such as spinal cord injuries, non-vocal quadriplegics, and visual or hearing impairments. In this article, a mobile phone human-interface system using a Morse code input device is designed and implemented for the person with disabilities to send/receive SMS (simple message service) messages or make/respond to a phone call. The proposed system is divided into three parts: input module, control module, and display module. The data format of the signal transmission between the proposed system and the communication devices is the PDU (protocol description unit) mode. Experimental results revealed that three participants with disabilities were able to operate the mobile phone through this human-interface after four weeks’ practice.

Chapter 1 lays the basis for the analyses in subsequent chapters by summarizing the protest groups and types of violence examined in this book. A first section takes a closer look at the protest groups discussed in chapters 2 to 8: the 1960s student movements in the United States and Germany, the new social movements, and the global justice movement protests. It describes involved social movement groups and discusses their claim-making, their membership composition, their stance toward violence, the frequency of such groups clashing with police, as well as police perceptions of them. A second section discusses the definition of violence used in the book. Highlighting different concepts of violence, it argues for a concise definition of physical interpersonal violence—as actions injuring or killing another person. This definition also allows examination of whether other types of actions often labeled “violence,” such as property damage, may foster interpersonal violence.

In English law where someone suffers an injury (physical or psychiatric) as a result of another person’s negligence, the injured person can bring a claim for compensation both for the injury itself and for any consequential financial loss. To prove negligence, a claimant needs to demonstrate there was a duty of care, that duty was breached, and they were injured as a consequence.

Accident reconstruction involving consumer products and industrial equipment often requires biomechanical and/or human factors analyses to help determine the root cause of an accident scenario. A systematic method has been established which incorporates numerous components of the sciences of biomechanics and human factors and uses the scientific method as the framework for evaluating competing theories. Using this method, available data are gathered pertaining to the accident or incident and organized in a modified Haddon matrix, with categories for Man [person(s) involved in the accident], Product/Machine, and Environment. Information about the person(s) is separated further into injury and human factors components. The injuries are viewed as physical evidence, where each injury occurred as a result of being exposed to a specific combination of energy, force, motion/deflection, acceleration, etc. The injuries are evaluated with known injury research and categorized with a specific type, location, mechanism, and injury threshold. This injury evidence is then reconciled with the other physical evidence developed from the accident environment and product/machine categories. Human factors evaluations of body size, posture, capabilities, sensory perception, reaction time, and movements create similar information that is also reconciled with the rest of the evidence from an accidental circumstance. At the core of this method is developing scientific data or information that can be used to support or refute accident reconstruction conclusions. An accurate and complete accident reconstruction using the available data must be consistent with the laws of physics, and the physics of interaction between the man, product/machine, and environment.

The use of advanced personal armor, especially the helmet, during combat has significantly reduced the incidence and severity of life threatening penetrating injuries from gunshot and blast shrapnel to the head and improved the overall survival rate of soldiers in combat [1]. On the other hand, the number of blast related injuries (68%) has increased to more than 4 times that of gunshot wounds (15%) and other injuries (17%), among which blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has became the signature wound of the U.S. armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan due to increased use of improvised explosive devices (IED) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) by the insurgents [2–4]. It is well known in detonation physics that the presence of a close proximity surface will increase the overpressure on the target due to blast wave reflection [5, 6]. The helmet, which has saved many lives from otherwise fatal penetration and blunt impact injuries, may unfortunately also serve as a reflecting surface and pose increased blast injury threat to the head. Consequently, the current study was designed to compare blast overpressures on the skull with and without helmet using a human head computational model.

Existing technologies using head motion or puffs of breath to control device movement promise increased mobility and the possibility of expanding recreational activities in a variety of forms to this population. Lack of access to rehabilitative services and engaging recreational activity fosters inactivity. This often creates an environment that causes individuals with physical disabilities to experience reduced function and mobility beyond the cause of their disability, and further disengages them from society 1. Public transportation provides opportunities for people to share a common platform or mode of transportation as they move from place to place, often amassing persons in large groups or quantities. Rail transportation in particular has the benefit of accommodating very large numbers of people in one movement, often upwards of 1000 persons. The benefits to society are considerable: shared resources, lower impacts on the environment, and more efficient use of time and energy. The consequence when something goes wrong, however, can also be considerable: mass casualties (fatalities and/or injuries) from a single event, disrupted supply chains, and environmental damages to name a few. Even if persons are not physically harmed, the effects of an incident can be felt by a far greater number of persons. Adequate preparation can play a key role in minimizing the effects of mass casualty events such as railway collisions or derailments. Indeed, lives can be saved or lost depending on the resources, training, and organization that are employed when responding to a mass casualty incident.

Pressure injuries (LPP) are one of the biggest adverse events foundin health services and consist of damage to the body tissues ofbedridden patients, resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin.This situation impacts on the quality of life of people who developthe condition, causing physical and emotional damage to the bedridden,in addition to increasing the time and costs of hospitalization.Based on this problem, software was developed that shows thepoints of greatest pressure between the body of a bedridden patientand the bed in which he is. This software receives information fromhardware, under development, built specifically for this project.The points of greatest pressure are made available on the screenof a monitoring application, in an organized and intuitive manner.For each person, a pressure map image is generated with the valuesread and decubitus change times are suggested through alarms. Inaddition, this image can be analyzed by a health professional whocan take steps to relieve pressure points and prevent the appearanceof LPP. As a result, in tests carried out during the research, the systembuilt showed the information successfully and the objectiveswere achieved.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is a collection of injuries that have been associated with the violent shaking of an infant or small child. These injuries can then lead to serious brain damage or even death. It is therefore important to identify the exact mechanism that leads from the shaking to the observed injuries, but little experimental work has been done in this area. The first part of this study was designed to identify if a correlation exists between the physical characteristics of a person shaking a crash test dummy (CRABI) and the resulting accelerations and jerks associated with the motion of the dummy’s head. This was done by placing a three axis accelerometer in the head and two in the body (one in the chest and one in the groin) of a median twelve month old male dummy to determine the acceleration of the head and body. In particular, the relative angular acceleration and jerk of the head relative to the body was determined, since it was felt to be a better predictor of brain damage than would be the absolute linear acceleration of the head. Similar work has been done in the past; however that study only considered the absolute acceleration of the head, and in only one direction. Since the present study allows the attitude of the head to be determined, a true relative angular acceleration of the head relative to the body was found. Consequently, it was found that no strong correlation existed between the absolute linear acceleration and any body characteristic, however a correlation (R2) of 0.6 was found to exist between the body weight of the shaker and the maximum angular jerk of the dummy’s head relative to its body, as compared to only a correlation of 0.5 when the shaker’s body weight was compared to the absolute linear acceleration of the head. A two dimensional dynamic simulation was also developed that modelled the behavior of a child crash test dummy. The model included the legs, torso, and head of the dummy, and the elastic behavior of the neck. The model was created to allow the associated accelerations and jerks to be determined for inputs of various magnitude and temporal profiles. The model was then validated by comparing the simulation results to the test results obtained from the experimental study described above.

Accident insurance, together with life insurance are two basic types of individual insurance traditionally covered by insurance law. In this kind of insurance, the insurer for a certain insurance premium, assumes the obligation to pay the insured sum to the insured individual or other beneficiary if, during the insurance contract, the insured person or other beneficiary sustains injury or even death as a result of the accident covered by the insurance contract, as well as to reimburse the costs of medical treatment and income loss as a result of temporary work disability, if foreseen by the contract. The basic rule in accident insurance is that, in case of the accident covered by the contract, the insured person will receive the insured sum agreed in the contract, and not the reimbursement of the incurred expenses or losses. Only in rare cases this type of insurance has the elements of property insurance – only in cases when the insured is entitled, in addition to the insured sum, to reimbursement of medical expenses and income loss. Today, the insurance of the individuals against accidents is widely used. It is a specific type of services offered by insurance companies. From the original accident insurance contracts signed on voluntary bases, we have come long way to have a large number of mandatory accident insurances, which is mostly the result of the growing number of occupations with the risk of accidents. It is obvious that beneficiaries of this type of insurance have realized that for a relatively small amount of premium, they will receive protection if they suffer from unexpected accidents that may result in physical injuries, even fatalities.

Reconstructing the mechanics and determining the cause of a person falling from a height in the absence of witness observations or a statement from the victim can be quite challenging. Often there is little information available beyond the final resting position of the victim and the injuries they sustained. The mechanics of a fall must follow the physics of falling bodies and this physics provides an additional source of information about how the fall occurred. Computational, physics-based simulations can be utilized to model the free-fall portion of the fall kinematics and to analyze biomechanical injury mechanisms. However, an accurate determination of the overall fall kinematics, including the initial conditions and any specific contributions of the person(s) involved, must include the correct position and posture of the individual prior to the fall. Frequently this phase of the analysis includes voluntary movement on the part of the fall victim, which cannot be modeled with simulations using anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs). One approach that has been utilized in the past to overcome this limitation is to run the simulations utilizing a number of different initial conditions for the fall victim. While fall simulations allow the initial conditions of the fall to be varied, they are unable to include the active movement of the subject, and the resulting interaction with other objects in the environment immediately prior to or during the fall. Furthermore, accurate contact interactions between the fall victim and multiple objects in their environment can be difficult to model within the simulation, as they are dependent on the knowledge of material properties of these objects and the environment such as elasticity and damping. Motion capture technology, however, allows active subject movement and behaviors to be captured in a quantitative, three-dimensional manner. This information can then be utilized within the fall simulation to more accurately model the initial fall conditions. This paper presents a methodology for reconstructing fall mechanics using a combination of motion capture, human body simulation, and injury biomechanics. This methodology uses as an example a fall situation where interaction between the fall victim and specific objects in the environment, as well as voluntary movements by the fall victim immediately prior to the accident, provided information that could not be otherwise obtained. Motion capture was first used to record the possible motions of a person in the early stages of the fall. The initial position of the fall victim within the physics based simulation of the body in free fall was determined utilizing the individual body segment and joint angles from the motion capture analysis. The methodology is applied to a real world case example and compared with the actual outcome.

Over many years, onshore plants have been deployed to liquefy the gas extracted from offshore wells and regasify the liquefied gas before sending it to the consumer grid. Currently the LNG Offshore Industry crosses a new development period since LNG Offshore Floating Units are considered as good options to improve the viability of gas supply. Nevertheless this paper will introduce the main safety challenges usually identified on LNG Offshore facilities, such as the space constraints on LNG Liquefaction Offshore Floating Units and injuries to personnel due to the cryogenic properties of the LNG. Moreover, it will be demonstrated that each hazard has a particular solution which has to be carefully assessed in order to ensure that the risks linked to an installation dealing with LNG are well understood and under control at the same time that the expectations of the project are achieved and compliance with recognized international health and safety standards is respected. Gaining knowledge about the properties of hazardous substances processed and operations performed in the installations is crucial to ensure safety in LNG Industry. Therefore this paper also aims at ensuring the awareness and understanding concerning the issues that could compromise the safety in LNG installations. As previously mentioned, a great concern in the LNG Offshore Industry is related to the space constraints in the site, once in case of a gas release followed by ignition there is the probability of escalation occurrence through the whole installation, what would affect personnel, environment and assets. Despite the space constraints found on offshore installations, it is important to consider minimum safety distances among the LNG facility systems. Thus, control of major hazards is of key importance, and prevention of escalation from an initial incident is critical. Also, it is important to understand what conditions could cause physical effects such as a pool fires, rapid phase transitions and vapour cloud explosions. Since this paper details and compares the safety challenges related to LNG processes, it will be presented some examples of accidents occurred in LNG facilities. The lessons learned from previous accidents can enable the companies to justify the investment to improve the safety in the installation and develop an effective Risk Management, which provides several benefits for the LNG operations (i.e.: the fewer accidents so lower employee absence, lessened threat of legal actions against the company, better reputation and consequently, reduced costs, increased productivity and greater profit.).
